Four Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) have been designated in the Republic of Ireland for Twaite shad, Alosa fallax (Lacépède), based on recent historical information on spawning activity—the estuarine reaches of the Rivers Munster Blackwater, Suir, Barrow–Nore and Slaney. The spawning status of some of these populations is considered to have declined substantially in recent years, and no known spawning areas of Allis shad, Alosa alosa (L.), are known for Ireland. Data are presented confirming the presence of both Allis shad and Twaite shad in all four SACs. The majority of the material has come as by-catch from estuarine commercial salmon netsmen. Angling is the principal source of material from the R. Barrow. Examination of scale and gonad material of Allis shad indicates some degree of readiness for spawning as well as spawning having taken place. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) data from the R. Barrow for Twaite shad in the May spawning period (2000–2002) had mean GSIs of 13.7–15% with maxima in the range of 21–28%. GSI values of 18% and 22% have been recorded in the July period for individual Allis shad from the upper estuaries of the R. Slaney and R. Suir, respectively, with both fish displaying gonad maturity stage V or VI (after Pina, 2000). Low GSI values have been recorded from other Allis shad in the June–July period displaying gonad condition varying from stage III (immature) to stage VIII (spent). These findings point to a possibility that Allis shad do engage in spawning activity, whether mono-specifically or with Twaite shad. The possibility of the latter is supported by gill raker count data presented. These show clearly defined value ranges for Twaite and for Allis as well as a series of fish with intermediate counts. The apparently low population levels of Twaite shad within the SACs identify a need to examine what measures might be undertaken to ensure the favourable conservation status of this species. The status of twaite shad was investigated within the Southern Baltic Sea (ICES subdivision 22–27) and transitional area between the Baltic and North Seas (division IIIa). The following sources of data were analysed: (i) commercial catch statistics and relevant publications, (ii) records from ichthyological museum collections, (iii) records from recent commercial and recreational fisheries, (iv) research fisheries with trawls. A total of 476 records of twaite shad including more than 16 million individuals were obtained for the time between the years 1836 and 2005. About 72.9% of all records originated from commercial catch statistics and publications, whereas 18.9% were received from ichthyological collections. Research fisheries provided 6.3%, and 1.9% of the records were obtained from recent commercial and recreational fisheries. Most records of twaite shad were estimated for subdivisions 24 (45.2%) and 26 (35.5%). From 1836 to 1959, 29.6% of the records date from the period until 1899. 70.4% of the records of twaite shad originate from the twentieth century until 1959. The mean annual catch of twaite shad between 1891 and 1959 amounted to 86,674 kg within subdivisions 24–26 of the Southern Baltic Sea. Catch data show an approximately 20-year-cyclicity of maximum yields and minimum catches, respectively. The maximum annual yield of twaite shad in subdivisions 24–26 (474,700 kg) was registered in 1940, the minimum annual yield was estimated in 1958 (10 kg). In the 1950s, the annual catches of twaite shad declined sharply. Until 1960 twaite shad catches and records originated mainly from the Pommeranian Bay/Pommeranian Coast and adjacent waters including the Szczecin Lagoon (subdivision 24), the Bay of Gdańsk, Vistula Lagoon and Vistula Spit (subdivision 26) and from the Curonian Lagoon and Curonian Spit (subdivision 26). The highest catches of twaite shad originated from the area of Curonian Lagoon/Curonian Spit from 1941 to 1960. Seasonal catches of twaite shad showed maximum values from May to July. From 1960 to 1989, only four records of A. fallax were registered in the Southern Baltic Sea which originated from German coastal waters in subdivisions 22 and 24. A total of 107 records of twaite shad was obtained in subdivisions 20–27 from 1990 to 2005. Most of these recent records originate from a twaite-shad stock in subdivisions 24, 25 and 26. There are indications which suggest a separate stock of twaite shad in subdivisions 20 and 21. Disappearance and recovery of twaite shad stocks were probably caused by the following factors: construction of barriers in rivers with spawning sites of twaite shad; habitat destruction in those rivers as consequence of gravel extraction and reengineering scheme to improve navigation and for flood defence purposes, water pollution in the lagoons of the Southern Baltic and in their tributaries, commercial fishery in the Southern Baltic and climatic variation in the Baltic Sea basin south of the latitude of 60° N. Mercury concentration [Hg] was assessed in 20 adult Allis shad Alosa alosa (54–59 cm) and 20 adult Twaite shad Alosa fallax (36–44 cm) collected during their spawning migration in the Dordogne and the Garonne rivers (France). [Hg] was measured in the gills, dorsal muscle, liver and kidney. Twaite shad exhibited higher [Hg] than Allis shad. Median [Hg] values were [Hg]Gills = 0.33 μg g−1 (dw), [Hg]Muscle = 1.22 μg g−1, [Hg]Liver = 1.99 μg g−1, [Hg]Kidney = 1.93 μg g−1 for Twaite shad and [Hg]Gills = 0.06 μg g−1, [Hg]Muscle = 0.20 μg g−1, [Hg]Liver = 1.18 μg g−1, [Hg]Kidney = 1.08 μg g−1 for Allis shad. In order to understand such differences, we investigated some life history traits of the two species: migratory history, age (3–6 years), size at age (an expression of growth) and the number of spawning events (0–2 events). The difference in estuarine residence time between the juveniles of both species, which was assumed to influence [Hg], was investigated using otolith Sr:Ca ratio. The microchemical analysis revealed a significant difference in the residence time of juveniles in the estuary (medians are 21 d and 10 d for Twaite shad and Allis shad, respectively) but this residence time seems too short to influence [Hg] (Allis shad: r spearman < 0.128; Twaite shad: r spearman < −0.340). As both species show the same age structure, the influence of age on [Hg] was negligible. The literature shows that the differences in growth and in the number of spawning events reported in our study are in favour of a higher [Hg] for Twaite shad than for Allis shad. Although trophic status was not investigated here, the literature reveals that it is another factor that could produce higher [Hg] in Twaite shad, since its diet includes higher trophic levels than Allis shad. Worldwide, river fragmentation is primarily responsible for the decline of populations of migrating fish. In particular, anadromous fish species, which necessarily migrate to fresh water to reproduce, are endangered since many are no longer able to reach their natural spawning sites. In addition, pollution of rivers effectively prevents upstream or downstream movements and blocks access to spawning grounds. This article investigates how poor water quality interferes with the life history cycle of twaite shad Alosa fallax fallax (Lacépède, 1803), an anadromous clupeid fish, in the watershed of River Scheldt, a heavily impacted environment in West Europe. We used two models based on known ecological and environmental information to explain past and present twaite shad distribution within the watershed and to make inferences about a future population recovery and juvenile habitat value. We demonstrated that historical spawning areas satisfy water quality conditions necessary to support spawning and successful development of early life history stages of the twaite shad. However, poor water quality conditions just upstream the freshwater–saltwater boundary still act as an effective migration barrier for upstream movement. As a consequence, spawning grounds are inaccessible and the population is dominated by seasonal adults occurring in the lower estuarine part of the watershed. This article provides testable and diagnostic information to the watershed management in that it identifies habitat and water quality requirements needed to support the expected recovery of an endangered anadromous fish population. Living gars are a small clade of seven species that occupy an important position on the actinopterygian phylogenetic tree as members of Holostei, sister-group to teleosts, and exhibit many plesiomorphic traits used to interpret and reconstruct early osteichthyan feeding mechanisms. Previous studies of gar feeding kinematics have focused on the ram-based, lateral-snapping mode of prey capture found in the narrow-snouted Lepisosteus genus, whereas this study focuses on a member of the broad-snouted Atractosteus sister-genus, the alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula, Lacépède, 1803). High-speed videography reveals that the feeding system of alligator gars is capable of rapid expansion from anterior to posterior, timed in a way to generate suction, counteract the effects of a bow-wave during ram-feeding, and direct a unidirectional flow of water through the feeding system. Reconstructed contrast-enhanced μCT-based cranial anatomy and three-dimensional modeling of linkage mechanics show that a lateral-sliding palatoquadrate, flexible intrasuspensorial joint, pivoting interhyal, and retractable pectoral girdle increase the range of motion and expansive capabilities of the alligator gar feeding mechanism. Reconstructions of muscular anatomy, inferences from in vivo kinematics, and in situ manipulations show that input from the hyoid constrictors and hypaxials play an important role in decoupling and modulating the dual roles of the sternohyoideus during feeding: hyoid retraction (jaw opening) and hyoid rotation (pharyngeal expansion). The alligator gar possesses an intricate feeding mechanism, capable of precise control with plesiomorphic muscles that represent one of the many ways the ancestral osteichthyan feeding mechanism has been modified for prey capture.  相似文献

Water contents of suspended matter, algal pigments, particulate organic carbon and particulate phosphorus were measured in the rivers Garonne (2 sites) and Ariège (1 site) throughout an annual cycle. The general trend of the parameters was similar at the three sites. Depending on the sites, the period of algal growth (chlorophyll a + phaeopigments > 25 µg l–1), lasted from two to six weeks in August–September. The algal peaks reached 50 to 90 µg 1–1 of total pigments. High contents of particulate organic carbon (> 2 mg 1–1) occurred at the end of summer (coinciding with algal growth), and during the November and May floods. In summer 50–75 % of the suspended matter was organic, in spring this was 10 times less. The high linear correlation between particulate organic carbon and pigment contents (r = 0.87; P = 0.0001) suggested an algal origin of at least part of the particulate carbon. Algal carbon was minor in the annual fluxes of particulate carbon (25 to 39% depending on the sites), but relatively high in comparison with other rivers. The mean particulate phosphorus content calculated over the year was 24 µg l–1 ; it varied from 15 µg l–1 during the high water period to 28 µg 1–1 during the low water period. Likewise the percentage of particulate phosphorus in the suspended matter varied from 0.17 to 0.40. A negative linear correlation existed between particulate phosphorus content and specific discharge (r = – 0.46; P = 0.0001).The very marked seasonal trend of the parameters and the interactions led us to differentiate two modes of the rivers' functioning: a hydrologic phase and a biological phase. The hydrologic phase (high water) was dominated by the processes of erosion and transfer over the whole catchment area and the flood plain, while the biological phase was characterized by a high primary production in the river bed.  相似文献

The larval development of Pachypops fourcroi from the lower Amazon River was described through morphological, meristic and morphometric features. Sixty-five larvae were examined and present a moderate body, slightly elliptical eyes and head ranging from moderate to large. The mouth is initially terminal and becomes subterminal throughout development with three barbels in the mentonian region. The larvae of P. fourcroi can be differentiated from other Sciaenidae in the Amazon basin by the pigmentation pattern, the presence of barbels, head depth, body depth and diameter, and shape of the eye.  相似文献

We studied the diet of Elachistocleis bicolor captured in pine, eucalypt, and unmodified environments in Uruguay. Comparisons between seasons (active, inactive) and among three environments (pine, eucalypt, unmodified), were made using rarefaction analyses, importance indices, and non-parametric tests. Elachistocleis bicolor has a specialized diet composed mainly of Pheidole and Solenopsis ants and termites. The diet of E. bicolor includes a high number of prey per individual, suggesting active search as a foraging strategy. The consumption of myrmicine ants (i.e., Solenopsis) represents a source for potential toxic skin secretions that in E. bicolor may be used to avoid being attacked in the ant nests used for shelter during aestivation, as occurs in the microhylid Phrynomantis microps. Diets in forested environments were richer in both periods, which may reflect the colonization of opportunistic ant species in these environments. Ants were more important in the eucalyptus plantations, particularly in the inactive period, whereas termites were more important in the pine plantations mainly in the inactive period. These environmental and seasonal differences in diet are consistent with the temperature and humidity tolerances of ants and termites, which are the main prey of E. bicolor.  相似文献

We describe the first juvenile specimen of an eolacertid lizard. The material comes from one of the most important Eocene localities, the Messel Pit in Germany. The new specimen provides unique information on the early ontogeny of Eolacerta, the largest known lizard from Messel, with a maximum snout-vent length greater than 30 cm and a mass approaching 1 kg. The specimen described here, with a SVL of 11.3 cm and an estimated mass of 21 g, can be allocated more precisely to Eolacerta robusta based on the co-occurrence and the combination of following features: (1) the nasal process of premaxilla is long; (2) position of lacrimal (being more anteriorly located in Stefanikia siderea); (3) the postorbital process of jugal is broad; (4) the ratio of the anterior and posterior region of the frontal between the sulcus interfacialis; (5) a mid-parietal constriction of the parietal table is present; (6) the interparietal shield broadens anteriorly; (7) the transverse sulcus is straight anteriorly. The incipient character of the parietal constriction and the slightly lower number of maxillary teeth (28 vs. 30–32 in adults) are consistent with a juvenile animal. Very important is evidence for the presence of pterygoid dentition (pointed teeth arranged in a single line) and the absence of palatine dentition. Ceratobranchial I is observed for the first time for this species, and its shape and length are very similar to those of Lacertidae. There are 27 presacral vertebrae in the juvenile, as in adults. In the juvenile specimen, ventral keel on the centrum is present in all vertebrae. The ventromedial portion of the ischium is well preserved here and gives information on the exact shape of this portion, at least in juvenile form. The scalation, as far as it is preserved, is similar to that of Stefanikia, except that the rectangular subdigital scales are longer in comparison with their width, and therefore have a broader appearance.  相似文献

Since the latter half of the nineteenth century, marine biologists have recognized that many molluscs living in the Gulf of Gabès, on the southern coast of Tunisia, exhibit a number of morphological characters that set them apart from the ‘typical form or variety’ that occurs in the rest of their Mediterranean distribution area. In the family Nassariidae, local forms (varieties or subspecies) were recognized as early as 1882, but none of these is currently recognized as having taxonomical significance. We have revisited the species-level systematics of the family using an integrative approach, based on morphological, geographic and molecular evidence (COI and 28S). Besides Tritia gibbosula (not sampled by us), we delimitated seven species, three with a broad range: Tritia neritea (probably introduced), T. mutabilis (but with considerable genetic structure between localities), and T. corniculum; and four not previously recognized as valid, and which may be considered Gulf of Gabès endemics: T. lanceolata, T. tenuicosta, T. pallaryana sp. nov. and T. djerbaensis sp. nov. Also, Tritia elongata is recognized as a valid species in the T. corniculum complex, with a distribution outside the Gulf of Gabès. It is remarkable that all have paucispiral protoconchs indicating non-planktotrophic larval development.

The pit vipers of the genus Trimeresurus Lacépède, 1804 is one of the largest groups of Asian snakes, distributed from India to China and Indonesia. Recent surveys in Jiangcheng and Simao, Yunnan Province, China resulted in a new species previously allocated to T. albolabris. Combining morphological and molecular data, we describe it as Trimeresurus guoi sp. nov. The new species morphologically differs from T. albolabris in the yellow green ventral color; an indistinct ventrolateral line; the a bsence of a postocular stripe; the firebrickred iris; a dark red stripe on dorsal tail; hemipenes with relatively weak sparse papillae, reaching 23 rd subcaudal when unextruded. Molecularly, the new species forms a clearly divergent lineage(BPP 1.00/UFB 100). Uncorrected pairwise distances of mitochondrial gene Cyt b between the new species and other known species of the subgenus Trimeresurus range from 0.052(T. albolabris) to 0.071(T. insularis).  相似文献

New remains of felid jaws and teeth are described from several localities of the local stratigraphic series of Abocador de Can Mata (ca. 11.9 to 11.6 Ma, Middle Miocene; Vallès-Penedès Basin, Catalonia, Spain). Three different taxa are identified: Styriofelis turnauensis, Pseudaelurus romieviensis and Pseudaelurus quadridentatus. The described remains of P. romieviensis enable extending considerably the chronological range of this species in the Iberian Peninsula, in agreement with its record in the rest of Europe. Moreover, it is shown for the first time that P. romieviensis may possess a p2. The presence of this tooth therefore does not constitue a valid diagnostic feature to distinguish P. romieviensis from P. quadridentatus.  相似文献

In larval spot, Leiostomus xanthurus Lacépède, 14C labeled food was rapidly digested and assimilated with up to 20% respired as 14CO2 within 10 h from ingestion. Two indices of carbon assimilation, total carbon utilization (range 9.4 to 64.7%) and total carbon absorption (range 67.2 to 99.2%) were calculated from the amount of 14C ingested, retained, and defecated. Carbon utilization and absorption were not significantly (P > 0.10) related to development as measured by age (7 to 47 days from hatching), length (1.8 to 11.4 mm), or dry weight (0.022 to 4.425 mg).  相似文献

Three scientific societies devoted to the study of reproduction were established in Britain, France and USA in the middle of the twentieth century by clinical, veterinary and agricultural scientists. The principal motivation for their establishment had been the study of sterility and fertility of people and livestock. There was also a wider perspective embracing other biologists interested in reproduction more generally. Knowledge disseminated through the societies' scientific meetings and publications would bear upon human and animal population problems as well as basic reproductive physiology and its applications. New journals dealing with reproductive physiology, having worldwide appeal, were established in Britain and USA. The financial resources of at least one of the societies and its journal are directed towards charitable functions, including financial support for travel to scientific meetings, for visits to particular laboratories, and for research in the short term, including that of undergraduates. Perhaps the example of the British society has given rise to others having a more specialised focus, as well as to the formation of the European Society for the Study of Human Reproduction and Embryology.  相似文献

Synopsis Ages determined by counts of apparent annuli on scales, sagittae, vertebrae, pectoral fin ray and dorsal fin spine cross sections of largemouth bass from northern populations, which are older and slower growing fish than in the southern parts of its native range, were compared to establish the accuracy of each method. Linear regression techniques indicated strong agreement (r> 0.9) among ages assigned from the examination of scales, sagittae, and vertebrae. The pattern of growth zones on pectoral fin ray and dorsal fm spine cross sections proved too variable for accurate age determination. Limited data suggest that ages greater than 7+ assigned from scales were more likely to underestimate true ages than the other body parts used, although none of these methods gave satisfactory results. Examination of scales from recovered tagged fish, and the similarity between back-calculated lengths of fish through age 7+ to annulus I and observed lengths of juvenile largemouth bass near the end of their first growing season, support the validity of ages determined from scales. Despite a very limited amount of habitat suitable for largemouth bass and severe climatic conditions, growth of this species in Tadenac Lake was similar to growth in other waters north of the Great Lakes. Differences in physical characteristics among these waters does not appear to influence growth rates of largemouth bass, but probably affects production and biomass.  相似文献

The land mammal record of the Vallès-Penedès Basin (Catalonia, NE Spain) ranges from the early Miocene (Ramblian) to the late Miocene (Turolian), that is from about 20 to 7 Ma. Here we present an updated review of the mammal succession focusing on biochronology as well as on environmental and faunal changes. Based on faunal similarities with central Europe, we interpret this basin as a transitional zone between the forested environments of northern regions and the more arid landscapes of the inner Iberian Peninsula. The quality of the Vallès-Penedès record and its chronostratigraphic control is clearly better for the late Aragonian and the Vallesian (between 12.6–9.0 Ma), especially for small mammals. Therefore, we analyze small mammal diversity dynamics during this interval. Contrary to previous analyses, which found an abrupt extinction event coinciding with the early/late Vallesian boundary (the Vallesian Crisis), our results show that this pattern is due to uneven sampling. Instead, taxonomic richness slowly decreased since the late Vallesian as a result of a series of extinctions that mostly affected forest-dwelling taxa.  相似文献
