I assessed the impact of both vertebrate and invertebrate predators on a lotic benthic community in a 1-month-long experiment, using enclosures containing cobble/gravel bottoms, with large-mesh netting that allowed invertebrates to drift freely. Brown trout (Salmo trutta) and leeches (Erpobdella octoculata) were used as predators and four treatments were tested: a predator-free control, leeches only, trout only, and leeches and trout together. A density of 26.7 leeches/m2 (20 leeches/enclosure) and 1.3 trout/m2 (one trout per enclosure) was stocked into the enclosures. The total biomass of invertebrate prey was significantly lower in the trout and trout plus leech treatments than in the leech and control treatments, which were due to strong negative effects of trout on Gammarus. On the individual prey taxon level, both trout and leeches affected the abundance of Asellus , Baetis and Ephemerella, whereas the abundance of Gammarus was only affected by trout, and the abundance of Orthocladiinae and Limnephilidae was only affected by leeches. In the treatment with trout and leeches together, the abundance of Ephemerella and Baetis was higher than when trout or leeches were alone, which was probably due to predator interactions. Leeches and trout had no effects on prey immigration but did affect per capita emigration rates. Both trout and leeches indirectly increased periphyton biomass in enclosures, probably due to their strong effects on grazers. Both trout and leeches were size-selective predators, with trout selecting large prey, and leeches selecting small prey. Size-selective predation by trout and leeches affected the size structure of five commonly consumed prey taxa. Trout produced prey populations of small sizes owing to consumption of large prey as well as increased emigration out of enclosures by these large prey. Leech predation produced prey assemblages of larger size owing to consumption and increased emigration of small prey. These results suggest that in lotic habits, predatory invertebrates can be as strong interactors as vertebrate predators. Received: 23 June 1997 / Accepted: 4 May 1998  相似文献

Predators affect prey populations not only by prey consumption but also in nonconsumptive ways including modifying prey behavior. I tested the effects of fire salamander larvae (Salamandra infraimmaculata) on populations of co-occurring crustacean species in artificial outdoor pools. I also tested whether these effects were due entirely to prey consumption by Salamandra larvae or alternatively to some nonconsumptive effect. The soil (containing crustacean eggs) added to the artificial pools was collected from a dried-out temporary pool that is inhabited by Salamandra during the early part of the hydroperiod. I randomly assigned the pools to one of three treatments: control, free Salamandra, or caged Salamandra. Free salamander larvae could roam the entire pool and prey upon crustaceans. Caged salamander larvae were placed within a cage with having 250-μm mesh windows. They could not prey upon the crustaceans but could, for example, influence them by chemical cues. Densities of the three dominant crustacean species (Arctodiaptomus similis, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula and Cyzicus sp.) were drastically reduced in both salamander treatments compared to the control. Crustacean densities, however, were not significantly different between the two salamander treatments. One plausible explanation is that crustacean eggs can detect the presence of this predator via chemical cues and delay hatching. Received: 4 March 1996 / Accepted, 23 October 1996  相似文献

Many studies have experimentally addressed the effects of a particular predator species on prey behavior. In nature, however, prey frequently face multiple species of predators that often vary in their predatory mode and in their level of predation risk. Relatively few studies have considered prey responses under these complex conditions. In Kentucky, the stream-dwelling water strider (Aquariusremigis) coexists with many potentially dangerous predators, two of which are the green sunfish (Lepomiscyanellus) and the fishing spider (Dolomedesvittatus). Green sunfish occupy stream pools and attack water striders from below. In contrast, fishing spiders hunt along stream shorelines where they perch on overhanging vegetation or rocks and attack water striders near shore. We compared how A. remigis individuals respond to these two very different predators in pools with one or both predators. The presence of sunfish in pools had strong effects on male water strider behavior, including increased use of three types of refuge from sunfish (riffles, climbing out of the water, sitting on the water but at the edges of pools), decreased activity and a decreased number of aggressive males on the water. Spiders also influenced water strider behavior; male water striders avoided spiders by shifting away from the edges of pools. Comparisons of the effects of the two predator species showed that in general, antipredator responses by male water striders were stronger in pools with fish alone than in those with spiders alone. In the presence of both predators, male water strider behavior (microhabitat use and activity) was generally similar to behavior in the presence of fish alone. In contrast, female water striders showed no significant response to the presence of sunfish, and little response to the presence of spiders. This lack of response could be because females spent much of their time in refuges even in the absence of predators (apparently hiding from harassment by males). Both spiders and fish caused decreases in water strider mating activity. The presence of fish reduced both the number of matings per pool (mating frequency), and mean mating durations. Spiders induced a decrease in mean mating duration, but not in mating frequency. The largest reductions in mating activity occurred in pools with both predators present. Pools with either spiders or fish alone suffered 15–20% water strider mortality during our experiment (versus no mortality in predator-free pools). Extant theory suggests that when prey face conflicting microhabitat responses to two predators (as in this study), the predators should have facilitative effects on predation rates (i.e., prey that avoid one predator are often killed by the other and vice versa). Mortality rates in pools with both predators present, however, were not significantly different from that predicted by a null model of multiple predator effects. The lack of predator facilitation can be explained by the compensatory reductions in water strider activity and mating activity in the presence of both predators. Carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) were studied in evergreen and deciduous forest ecosystems in semi-arid Utah (Pinus contorta, Populus tremuloides, Acer negundo and Acer grandidentatum). Measurements were taken in four to five stands of each forest ecosystem differing in overstory leaf area index (LAI) during two consecutive growing seasons. The δ13Cleaf (and carbon isotope discrimination) of understory vegetation in the evergreen stands (LAI 1.5–2.2) did not differ among canopies with increasing LAI, whereas understory in the deciduous stands (LAI 1.5–4.5) exhibited strongly decreasing δ13Cleaf values (increasing carbon isotope discrimination) with increasing LAI. The δ13C values of needles and leaves at the top of the canopy were relatively constant over the entire LAI range, indicating no change in intrinsic water-use efficiency with overstory LAI. In all canopies, δ13Cleaf decreased with decreasing height above the forest floor, primarily due to physiological changes affecting c i/c a (> 60%) and to a minor extent due to δ13C of canopy air (< 40%). This intra-canopy depletion of δ13Cleaf was lowest in the open stand (1‰) and greatest in the denser stands (4.5‰). Although overstory δ13Cleaf did not change with canopy LAI, δ13C of soil organic carbon increased with increasing LAI in Pinus contorta and Populus tremuloides ecosystems. In addition, δ13C of decomposing organic carbon became increasingly enriched over time (by 1.7–2.9‰) for all deciduous and evergreen dry temperate forests. The δ13Ccanopy of CO2 in canopy air varied temporally and spatially in all forest stands. Vertical canopy gradients of δ13Ccanopy, and [CO2]canopy were larger in the deciduous Populus tremuloides than in the evergreen Pinu contorta stands of similar LAI. In a very wet and cool year, ecosystem discrimination (Δe) was similar for both deciduous Populus tremulodies (18.0 ± 0.7‰) and evergreen Pinus contorta (18.3 ± 0.9‰) stands. Gradients of δ13Ccanopy and [CO2]canopy were larger in denser Acer spp. stands than those in the open stand. However, 13C enrichment above and photosynthetic draw-down of [CO2]canopy below tropospheric baseline values were larger in the open than in the dense stands, due to the presence of a vigorous understory vegetation. Seasonal patterns of the relationship δ13Ccanopy versus 1/[CO2]canopy were strongly influenced by precipitation and air temperature during the growing season. Estimates of Δe for Acer spp. did not show a significant effect of stand structure, and averaged 16.8 ± 0.5‰ in 1933 and 17.4 ± 0.7‰ in 1994. However, Δe varied seasonally with small fluctuations for the open stand (2‰), but more pronounced changes for the dense stand (5‰). Received: 15 April 1996 / Accepted: 19 October 1996  相似文献

This study investigates how visual and tactile sensory information, as well as biomechanical effects due to differences in physical characteristics of the prey, influence feeding behavior in the frog Cyclorana novaehollandiae. Video motion analysis was used to quantify movement patterns produced when feeding on five prey types (termites, waxworms, crickets, mice and earthworms). Twelve kinematic variables differed significantly among prey types, and twelve variables were correlated with prey characteristics (including mass, length, height and velocity of movement). Results indicate that C.␣novaehollandiae uses a different strategy to capture each prey type. Visual assessment of prey characteristics appeared to be more important in modulating feeding behavior than tactile cues or biomechanical effects. We propose a hierarchical hypothesis of behavioral choice, in which decisions are based primarily on visual analysis of prey characteristics. In this model, the frogs first choose between jaw prehension and tongue prehension based on prey size. If they have chosen jaw prehension, they next choose between upward or downward head rotation based on length and height of the prey. If they have chosen tongue prehension, they next choose between behavior for fast and slow prey. Final decisions may be the result of behavioral fine tuning based on tactile feedback. Spongivory on Caribbean reefs releases corals from competition with sponges   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
Malcolm S. Hill 《Oecologia》1998,117(1-2):143-150
Competition for space is an important process on tropical coral reefs. Few studies have examined the role sponges play in community structure despite the fact that many sponges are competitively superior to reef-building corals in space acquisition. Surveys conducted throughout the Florida Keys indicated that Chondrilla nucula was involved in about 30% of all coral-sponge interactions; this sponge has also been observed in 40–50% of coral-sponge interactions on other Caribbean reefs. C. nucula is also the top prey item of the Hawksbill turtle, and among the preferred prey of several spongivorous fish. I examined how predation influenced sponge competitive abilities (particularly those of C. nucula), and whether this type of indirect effect had important consequences for community dynamics in the Florida Keys. Exclusion of sponge predators (primarily angelfish) resulted in increased sponge overgrowth, with a subsequent greater loss of coral cover, compared to uncaged pairwise interactions. When caged, the corals Dichocoenia stokesii and Siderastrea sideraea lost significantly greater surface area and number of polyps to the sponge C. nucula compared to uncaged interactions. For caged interactions involving the sponge Ectyoplasia ferox, there was a trend for greater loss of  S. sideraea surface area and polyps compared to uncaged interactions. Predation had a greater affect on C. nucula than on any of the other sponges examined. Predator exclusion experiments performed with naturally occurring coral-sponge interactions demonstrated a significant decrease in total coral cover compared to uncaged controls. It is proposed that indirect effects arising from spongivory (especially consumption of  C. nucula) may have large community consequences. Species diversity on Caribbean reefs may be maintained, at least in part, by spongivores. Received: 28 January 1998 / Accepted: 22 June 1998  相似文献

Sexual reproduction of Daphnia pulex in a temporary habitat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
David J. Innes 《Oecologia》1997,111(1):53-60
Species of Daphnia (Crustacea: Cladocera) typically reproduce by cyclical parthenogenesis, in which a period of all-female parthenogenetic reproduction is followed by sexual reproduction. Sex in Daphnia is determined by the environment, with factors such as temperature, photoperiod and crowding stimulating the production of males and sexual females. Previous studies on Daphnia pulex from temporary pond habitats demonstrated the coexistence of male-producing and non-male-producing (NMP) females, as determined under crowding in the laboratory. A strong genetic component to this sex allocation variation suggested that sex expression in D. pulex is better described as a result of genotype-environment interaction. The present study examined the switch from parthenogenetic to sexual reproduction in two temporary-pond populations of D. pulex. Both populations showed a very early investment in sexual reproduction, independent of population density, by producing males very soon after the populations were reestablished from resting eggs in the early spring. Approximately 40% of the initial broods were male. Additional evidence for gender specialization was obtained by observing the sex of two or three successive broods for 85 individual females. Fifty-eight females produced successive broods of females, 13 females produced successive broods of males and 14 females produced successive broods which included both male and female broods. Females that produced successive female broods under natural conditions included a higher frequency of NMP females compared to a random sample of females, confirming the existence of NMP females. Sexual females were observed in both populations after the first appearence of males, suggesting that the presence of males may stimulate the production of sexual females. For D. pulex populations in a temporary environment, there appears to be an increased emphasis on sexual reproduction and a decreased influence of the environment on sex determination, compared to Daphnia populations in more permanent habitats. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a thiamin derivative, thiamin tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide (TTFD), on oxygen uptake (˙VO2), lactate accumulation and cycling performance during exercise to exhaustion. Using a randomized, double-blind, cross-over design with a 10-day washout between trials, 14 subjects ingested either 1 g · day−1 of TTFD or a placebo (PL) for 4 days. On day 3, subjects performed a progressive exercise test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer for the determination of ˙VO2submax, ˙VO2peak, lactate concentration ([La ]), lactate threshold (ThLa) and heart rate ( f c). On day 4, subjects performed a maximal 2000-m time trial on a cycle ergometer. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures was used to determine significant differences between trials. There were no significant differences detected between trials for serial measures of ˙VO2submax, [La] or f c. Likewise, ˙VO2peak [PL 4.06 (0.19) TTFD 4.12 (0.19) l · min−1, P = 0.83], ThLa [PL 2.47 (0.17), TTFD 2.43 (0.16) l · min−1, P = 0.86] and 2000-m performance time [PL 204.5 (5.5), TTFD 200.9 (4.3) s, P = 0.61] were not significantly different between trials. The results of this study suggest that thiamin derivative supplementation does not influence high-intensity exercise performance. Accepted: 19 December 1996  相似文献

The genome of the fungal chickpea pathogen Ascochyta rabiei was screened for polymorphisms by microsatellite-primed PCR. While ethidium-bromide staining of electrophoretically separated amplification products showed only limited polymorphism among 24 Tunisian A. rabiei isolates, Southern hybridization of purified PCR fragments to restriction digests of fungal DNA revealed polymorphic DNA fingerprints. One particular probe that gave rise to a hypervariable single-locus hybridization signal was cloned from the Syrian isolate AA6 and sequenced. It contained a large compound microsatellite harbouring the penta- and decameric repeat units (CATTT)n, (CATTA)n, (CATATCATTT)n and (TATTT)n. We call this locus ArMS1 (Ascochyta rabiei microsatellite 1). Unique flanking sequences were used to design primer pairs for locus- specific microsatellite amplification and direct sequencing of additional ArMS1 alleles from Tunisian and Pakistani isolates. A high level of sequence variation was observed, suggesting that multiple mutational mechanisms have contributed to polymorphism. Hybridization and PCR analyses were performed on the parents and 62 monoascosporic F1 progeny derived from a cross between two different mating types of the fungus. Progeny alleles could be traced back to the parents, with one notable exception, where a longer than expected fragment was observed. Direct sequencing of this new length allele revealed an alteration in the copy number of the TATTT repeat [(TATTT)53 to (TATTT)65], while the remainder of the sequence was unchanged. Spiders can use air particle movements to localize moving prey. We studied the responses of 32 wind-sensitive interneurones in the hunting spider Cupiennius salei to prey stimuli. Stimulation with a tethered flying fly or with artificial air pulses activated plurisegmental interneurones that responded to changes in air movement velocity and were thus well suited to represent the highly fluctuating air stream typical of prey stimuli. In most interneurones (n = 18) the responses to the stimulation of different legs were not significantly different from each other. Different interneurones had different response characteristics and their latencies largely overlapped suggesting that there is parallel processing of the signals by populations of interneurones with different response characteristics. In two interneurones the number of spikes and the spiking pattern elicited by stimulation of each of the eight legs markedly differed depending on the leg stimulated. These neurones may play an important role in directional information processing. Stimulation of the adjacent legs from front to back or from back to front revealed two interneurones sensitive to the direction of successive stimulation of the legs. These neurones may be able to detect the motion of an air movement source in a preferred direction and thus act as nearfield motion detectors to localize a moving prey item. The heart of Drosophila melanogaster is a simple muscular tube with a posterior pulsatile portion and a thoracic-cranial vessel. The pacemaker, located caudally, is myogenic. Its rate of firing is modulated by neurotransmitters. Serotonin, octopamine, norepineph-rine, dopamine, and acetylcholine accelerate the heart, in that order of potency. Dihydroxyphenylalanine, γ-aminobutyric acid, glutamate, and glycine have no effect. Generally, the regularity of the heartbeat is not adversely affected by treatment with any of these neurotransmitters. We show here that amnesiac, a neurological mutation, and Dihydroxyphenylalanine decarboxylase temperature sensitive, a mutation that interferes with synthesis of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, result in slower heart rate and reduced regularity across a normal range of temperatures for these flies. Dopamine-N-acetyltransferase, which is on the catabolic route to dopamine, serotonin, and octopamine, has no effect. hypoactiveC reduces the rate of the heart, but its mechanism of action is unknown. Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-MRS) was used to investigate the influence of maximal aerobic power (˙VO 2max) on the recovery of human calf muscle from high-intensity exercise. The (˙VOO2max) of 21 males was measured during treadmill exercise and subjects were assigned to either a low-aerobic-power (LAP) group (n = 10) or a high-aerobic-power (HAP) group (n = 11). Mean (SE) ˙VO 2max of the groups were 46.6 (1.1) and 64.4 (1.4) ml · kg−1 · min−1, respectively. A calf ergometry work capacity test was used to assign the same relative exercise intensity to each subject for the MRS protocol. At least 48 h later, subjects performed the rest (4 min), exercise (2 min) and recovery (10 min) protocol in a 1.5 T MRS scanner. The relative concentration of phosphocreatine (PCr) was measured throughout the protocol and intracellular pH (pHi) was determined from the chemical shift between inorganic phospate (Pi) and PCr. End-exercise PCr levels were 27 (3.4) and 25 (3.5)% of resting levels for LAP and HAP respectively. Mean resting pHi was 7.07 for both groups, and following exercise it fell to 6.45 (0.04) for HAP and 6.38 (0.04) for LAP. Analysis of data using non-linear regression models showed no differences in the rate of either PCr or pHi recovery. The results suggest that ˙VO2max is a poor predictor of metabolic recovery rate from high-intensity exercise. Differences in recovery rate observed between individuals with similar ˙VO2max imply that other factors influence recovery. Accepted: 17 December 1996  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that elevated CO2 would stimulate proportionally higher photosynthesis in the lower crown of Populus trees due to less N retranslocation, compared to tree crowns in ambient CO2. Such a response could increase belowground C allocation, particularly in trees with an indeterminate growth pattern such as Populus tremuloides. Rooted cuttings of P. tremuloides were grown in ambient and twice ambient (elevated) CO2 and in low and high soil N availability (89 ± 7 and 333 ± 16 ng N g−1 day−1 net mineralization, respectively) for 95 days using open-top chambers and open-bottom root boxes. Elevated CO2 resulted in significantly higher maximum leaf photosynthesis (A max) at both soil N levels. A max was higher at high N than at low N soil in elevated, but not ambient CO2. Photosynthetic N use efficiency was higher at elevated than ambient CO2 in both soil types. Elevated CO2 resulted in proportionally higher whole leaf A in the lower three-quarters to one-half of the crown for both soil types. At elevated CO2 and high N availability, lower crown leaves had significantly lower ratios of carboxylation capacity to electron transport capacity (V cmax/J max) than at ambient CO2 and/or low N availability. From the top to the bottom of the tree crowns, V cmax/J max increased in ambient CO2, but it decreased in elevated CO2 indicating a greater relative investment of N into light harvesting for the lower crown. Only the mid-crown leaves at both N levels exhibited photosynthetic down regulation to elevated CO2. Stem biomass segments (consisting of three nodes and internodes) were compared to the total A leaf for each segment. This analysis indicated that increased A leaf at elevated CO2 did not result in a proportional increase in local stem segment mass, suggesting that C allocation to sinks other than the local stem segment increased disproportionally. Since C allocated to roots in young Populus trees is primarily assimilated by leaves in the lower crown, the results of this study suggest a mechanism by which C allocation to roots in young trees may increase in elevated CO2. The kinetics of the torque-velocity (T-ω) relationship after aerobic exercise was studied to assess the effect of fatigue on the contractile properties of muscle. A group of 13 subjects exercised until fatigued on a cycle ergometer, at an intensity which corresponded to 60% of their maximal aerobic power for 50 min (MAP60%); ten subjects exercised until fatigued at 80% of their maximal aerobic power for 15 min (MAP80%). Of the subjects 7 exercised at both intensities with at least a 1-week interval between sessions. Pedalling rate was set at 60 rpm. The T-ω relationship was determined from the velocity data collected during all-out sprints against a 19 N · m braking torque on the same ergometer, according to a method proposed previously. Maximal theoretical velocity (ω0) and maximal theoretical torque (T 0) were estimated by extrapolation of the linear T-ω relationship. Maximal power (P max) was calculated from the values of T 0 and ω0 (P max = 0.25 ω0T 0). The T-ω relationships were determined before, immediately after and 5 and 10 min after the aerobic exercise. The kinetics of ω0, T 0 and P max was assumed to express the effects of fatigue on the muscle contractile properties (maximal shortening velocity, maximal muscle strength and maximal power). Immediately after exercise at MAP60% a 7.8% decrease in T 0 and 8.8% decrease in P max was seen while the decrease in ω0 was nonsignificant, which suggested that P max decreased in the main because of a loss in maximal muscle strength. In contrast, MAP80% induced a 8.1% decrease in ω0 and 12.8% decrease in P max while the decrease in T 0 was nonsignificant, which suggested that the main cause of the decrease in P max was probably a slowing of maximal shortening velocity. The short recovery time of the T-ω relationship suggests that the causes of the decrease of torque and velocity are processes which recover rapidly. Accepted: 25 November 1996  相似文献

The behavioral studies of Part I have shown in common toads that after systemic administration of the dopamine agonist apomorphine the prey-directed orienting turning movements are suppressed while prey snapping is facilitated. Part II focusses on retinal and tectal single cell responses to moving objects. (1) After systemic administration of apomorphine, the discharge rates of retinal class R2 and R3 ganglion cell fibres – recorded from the retino-tectal projection – speeded up in response to visual objects traversing their excitatory receptive fields. This enhancing effect was independent of the recording site in the retino-tectal map. (2) The diameters of the excitatory receptive fields of R2 and R3 neurons doubled their sizes. Probably, apomorphine enhances the center-dominated excitatory responses at the expense of the strength of the inhibitory surround. (3) The apomorphine-induced effects were fully developed 20–35 min after drug administration. (4) At the same time the discharge rates of T5.1 and T5.2 tectal neurons were reduced under apomorphine. The effect was independent of the recording site in the retino-tectal map. The diameters of the excitatory receptive fields of these tectal neurons were not influenced. (5) To changes in configurational stimulus features, the basic pattern of discrimination was maintained. (6) It is suggested that tectal output to the turn-generating motor network – mediated by T5.1 and T5.2 neurons – is modulated by a pretecto-tectal pathway which involves dopaminergic pretectal cells. (7) The enhanced snapping can be interpreted in terms of a modulation of reticular/hypoglossal structures by dopaminergic preoptic/hypothalamic/solitary systems.  相似文献

The capability of Phascolosoma arcuatum to detoxify sulfide in anaerobic conditions was examined. Sulfane sulfur, which underwent cold cyanolysis, was the major excretory end product of sulfide detoxification during anoxia. Thiosulfate was not excreted into the external medium. Instead, it was absorbed by P. arcuatum and its absorption was stimulated by the presence of sodium sulfide (Na2S) in the incubation medium. The effective formation and excretion of sulfane sulfur by P.␣arcuatum required the presence of both Na2S and sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3). Results obtained indicate that rhodanese might be involved in sulfide detoxification in this sipunculid. Rhodanese could act as a catalyst in the transfer of sulfur atoms from thiosulfate to HS. The body wall and the introvert were the main sites of sulfide detoxification. However, it is unlikely that epibiotic bacteria associated with the outside surface of the worm were involved in the detoxification process. A time-course study on the contents of thiosulfate and sulfane sulfur in the body wall of P. arcuatum incubated anaerobically in the presence of Na2S + Na2S2O3 verified that thiosulfate absorbed was utilized to detoxify sulfide to sulfane sulfur. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of exercise induced hyperventilation and hypocapnia on airway resistance (R aw), and to try to answer the question whether a reduction of R aw is a mechanism contributing to the increase of endurance time associated with a reduction of exercise induced hyperventilation as for example has been observed after respiratory training. Eight healthy volunteers of both sexes participated in the study. Cycling endurance tests (CET) at 223 (SD 47) W, i.e. at 74 (SD 5)% of the subject's peak exercise intensity, breathing endurance tests and body plethysmograph measurements of pre- and postexercise R aw were carried out before and after a 4-week period of respiratory training. In one of the two CET before the respiratory training CO2 was added to the inspired air to keep its end-tidal concentration at 5.4% to avoid hyperventilatory hypocapnia (CO2-test); the other test was the control. The pre-exercise values of specific expiratory R aw were 8.1 (SD 2.8), 6.8 (SD 2.6) and 8.0 (SD 2.1) cm H2O · s and the postexercise values were 8.5 (SD 2.6), 7.4 (SD 1.9) and 8.0 (SD 2.7) cm H2O · s for control CET, CO2-CET and CET after respiratory training, respectively, all differences between these tests being nonsignificant. The respiratory training significantly increased the respiratory endurance time during breathing of 70% of maximal voluntary ventilation from 5.8 (SD 2.9) min to 26.7 (SD 12.5) min. Mean values of the cycling endurance time (t cend) were 22.7 (SD 6.5) min in the control, 19.4 (SD 5.4) min in the CO2-test and 18.4 (SD 6.0) min after respiratory training. Mean values of ventilation ( E) during the last 3␣min of CET were 123 (SD 35.8) l · min−1 in the control, 133.5 (SD 35.1) l · min−1 in the CO2-test and 130.9 (SD 29.1) l · min−1 after respiratory training. In fact, six subjects ventilated more and cycled for a shorter time, whereas two subjects ventilated less and cycled for a longer time after the respiratory training than in the control CET. In general, the subjects cycled longer the lower the E, if all three CET are compared. It is concluded that R aw measured immediately after exercise is independent of exercise-induced hyperventilation and hypocapnia and is probably not involved in limiting t cend, and that t cend at a given exercise intensity is shorter when E is higher, no matter whether the higher E occurs before or after respiratory training or after CO2 inhalation. The physiological responses to forced exercise were studied in yellowbelly and marbled rockcod (Notothenia coriiceps and N. rossii), and the haemoglobinless icefish (Chaenocephalus aceratus), from blood samples obtained via indwelling catheters. The maximal exertion tolerable by N. coriiceps was 3–5 min, although N. rossii was not fully exhausted by this effort, and it proved difficult to elicit sustained maximal activity in C. aceratus. Arterial O2 tension reflected the relative degree of exhaustion, showing a significant fall in the case of N. coriiceps, little change in N. rossii, and even a rise in C. aceratus as a result of hyperventilation. Such changes in the red-blooded species were not caused by altered O2 carrying capacity, as there was no change in haematocrit. In Notothenia spp. the decrease in arterial pH was better correlated with a rise in arterial CO2 tension than with blood lactate concentration, which is reflected in a modest net metabolic acid load. In contrast, the icefish showed an attenuated hypercapnia and a more pronounced lactacidosis, but an insignificant net metabolic acid load. Disturbance in ionoregulation following exercise was limited to an elevated [Cl] in Notothenia, while circulating catecholamine levels remained unusually low in all specimens. The response to stress appears to reflect lifestyle and/or endemic speciation, rather than specific adaptations to the stenothermal environment. Accepted: 9 August 1996  相似文献

Body temperature (T b) of seven European hamsters maintained at constant ambient temperature (T a = 8 °C) and constant photoperiod (LD 8:16) was recorded throughout the hibernating season using intraperitoneal temperature-sensitive HF transmitters. The animals spent about 30% of the hibernation season in hypothermia and 70% in inter-bout normothermy. Three types of hypothermia, namely deep hibernation bouts (DHBs), short hibernation bouts (SHBs), and short and shallow hibernation bouts (SSHBs), were distinguished by differences in bout duration and minimal body temperature (T m). A gradual development of SSHBs from the diel minimum of T b during normothermy could be seen in individual hamsters, suggesting a stepwise decrease of the homeostatic setpoint of T b regulation during the early hibernation season. Entry into hibernation followed a 24-h rhythm occurring at preferred times of the day in all three types of hypothermia. DHBs and SHBs were initiated approximately 4 h before SSHBs, indicating a general difference in the physiological initiation of SSHBs on the one hand and DHBs and SHBs on the other. Arousals from SHBs and SSHBs also followed a 24-h rhythm, whereas spontaneous arousals from DHBs were widely scattered across day and night. Statistical analyses of bout length and the interval between arousals revealed evidence for a free-running circadian rhythm underlying the timing of arousals. The results clearly demonstrate that entries into hypothermia are linked to the light/dark-cycle. However, the role of the circadian system in the timing of arousals from DHBs remains unclear. The heat increment of feeding (HIF), a transient postprandial increase in metabolic rate, is the energy cost of processing a meal. We measured HIF in house wren chicks (Troglodytes aedon) ranging in mass from 1.6 to 10.3 g. This mass range (age 2–10 days) spanned a transition from blind, naked, ectothermic chicks through alert, endothermic birds with nearly complete feathering. We fed chicks crickets (2.7–10% of chick body mass) and determined HIF from continuous measurements of oxygen consumption rate (O2) before and after meals. At warm ambient temperatures (T a) of 33–36 °C, the magnitude of HIF (in ml O2 or joules) was linearly related to meal mass and was not affected by chick mass. HIF accounted for 6.3% of ingested energy, which is within the range of results for other carnivorous vertebrates. The duration of HIF was inversely related to chick mass; 10-g chicks processed a standard meal approximately twice as fast as 2-g chicks. HIF duration increased with increasing meal mass. The peak O2 during HIF, expressed as the factorial increase above resting metabolism, was independent of body mass and meal mass. In large, endothermic chicks ( > 8 g), HIF substituted for thermoregulatory heat production at low T a. Accepted: 11 December 1996  相似文献
