The geographical distribution of the limpet family Patellidae is essentially antitropical, with 18 species in southern Africa, 10 in the northeastern Atlantic, and only 11 species elsewhere (although 4 of these do occur in the tropics). One possible explanation for this distribution is the suggestion of a recent, perhaps Early Pliocene, migration from southern Africa northward. We tested this hypothesis by constructing a molecular phylogeny, derived from partial sequences of the 12S and 16S mitochondrial genes, obtained from 34 of the 38 patellid species. Five species of Nacellidae and 3 of Lottiidae were included as potential outgroups. Analysis revealed that two patellid clades are represented in the northeastern Atlantic. The typical European patellids (Patella sensu stricto) form a single clade within which there is little molecular divergence, but are distant from all other patellids, thus refuting the idea of recent southern ancestry. From the limited fossil record and estimated rates of molecular divergence, we suggest that Patella s.s. may have originated at least as early as the Upper Cretaceous and that its northern distribution may have been achieved at the same time. The second patellid clade present in the northeastern Atlantic is the genus Cymbula, of which the single species Cymbula safiana extends from West Africa to the Mediterranean. In contrast to Patella s.s., C. safiana is indeed a member of an otherwise southern African clade and may have attained its present distribution more recently, during the Miocene. The geographical origin of the family remains unclear, but a Mesozoic radiation in southern Gondwana is possible. By optimizing morphological characters on our molecular tree, we consider the evolution of shell mineralogy and sperm ultrastructure. We also discuss the phylogenetic classification of the patellids and present some evidence that the family may not be monophyletic.  相似文献

Structure of the species--energy relationship   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The relationship between energy availability and species richness (the species-energy relationship) is one of the best documented macroecological phenomena. However, the structure of species distribution along the gradient, the proximate driver of the relationship, is poorly known. Here, using data on the distribution of birds in southern Africa, for which species richness increases linearly with energy availability, we provide an explicit determination of this structure. We show that most species exhibit increasing occupancy towards more productive regions (occurring in more grid cells within a productivity class). However, average reporting rates per species within occupied grid cells, a correlate of local density, do not show a similar increase. The mean range of used energy levels and the mean geographical range size of species in southern Africa decreases along the energy gradient, as most species are present at high productivity levels but only some can extend their ranges towards lower levels. Species turnover among grid cells consequently decreases towards high energy levels. In summary, these patterns support the hypothesis that higher productivity leads to more species by increasing the probability of occurrence of resources that enable the persistence of viable populations, without necessarily affecting local population densities.  相似文献

Background and Aims The largest subfamily of orchids, Epidendroideae, represents one of the most significant diversifications among flowering plants in terms of pollination strategy, vegetative adaptation and number of species. Although many groups in the subfamily have been resolved, significant relationships in the tree remain unclear, limiting conclusions about diversification and creating uncertainty in the classification. This study brings together DNA sequences from nuclear, plastid and mitochrondrial genomes in order to clarify relationships, to test associations of key characters with diversification and to improve the classification. Methods Sequences from seven loci were concatenated in a supermatrix analysis for 312 genera representing most of epidendroid diversity. Maximum-likelihood and parsimony analyses were performed on this matrix and on subsets of the data to generate trees and to investigate the effect of missing values. Statistical character-associated diversification analyses were performed.Key Results Likelihood and parsimony analyses yielded highly resolved trees that are in strong agreement and show significant support for many key clades. Many previously proposed relationships among tribes and subtribes are supported, and some new relationships are revealed. Analyses of subsets of the data suggest that the relatively high number of missing data for the full analysis is not problematic. Diversification analyses show that epiphytism is most strongly associated with diversification among epidendroids, followed by expansion into the New World and anther characters that are involved with pollinator specificity, namely early anther inflexion, cellular pollinium stalks and the superposed pollinium arrangement. Conclusions All tested characters show significant association with speciation in Epidendroideae, suggesting that no single character accounts for the success of this group. Rather, it appears that a succession of key features appeared that have contributed to diversification, sometimes in parallel.  相似文献

A classification of the genus Nothofagus (Fagaceae)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
PHILIPSON, W. R. & PHILIPSON, M. N., 1988. A classification of the genus Nothofagus (Fagaceae). The genus Nothofagus is subdivided into two subgenera, two sections and three subsections, employing characters of the pollen, cupule and vernation, together with the incidence of leaf-fall. The subdivision into subgenera also agrees with present geographical distribution and with characters of the secondary xylem. One subgeneric and one subsectional name are new. Reasons are given for departures from previous classifications.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation among nine populations of the endemic lizard Lacerta dugesii Milne-Edwards 1829 (Lacertidae) from four groups of islands constituting the Archipelago of Madeira, was investigated by protein electrophoresis at 23 enzyme loci. Among twenty polymorphic loci, the total genetic diversity was due primarily to intra-population variation. The allele and genotypic frequencies among populations showed some heterogeneity, allowing the species to present a structuring pattern compatible with their geographical clustering. Some evidence suggests that selection acting on some loci in different ecological conditions may be responsible for the clustering of the populations studied. There was no apparent isolation effect expected under an "island" model of population divergence, and no correlation was found between genetic and geographic distances among populations. Morphological variation of the proposed three L. dugesii subspecies is not congruent with the allozyme analysis. This most probably suggests a rapid colonization of the islands followed by a strong effect of selection operating over the morphological characters used to define the subspecies.  相似文献

Higher‐level phylogenetics of Pycnogonida has been discussed for many decades but scarcely studied from a cladistic perspective. Traditional taxonomic classifications are yet to be tested and affinities among families and genera are not well understood. Pycnogonida includes more than 1300 species described, but no systematic revisions at any level are available. Previous attempts to propose a phylogeny of the sea spiders were limited in characters and taxon sampling, therefore not allowing a robust test of relationships among lineages. Herein, we present the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the Pycnogonida based on a total evidence approach and Direct Optimization. Sixty‐three pycnogonid species representing all families including fossil taxa were included. For most of the extant taxa more than 6 kb of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA and 78 morphological characters were scored. The most parsimonious hypotheses obtained in equally weighted total evidence analyses show the two most diverse families Ammotheidae and Callipallenidae to be non‐monophyletic. Austrodecidae + Colossendeidae + Pycnogonidae are in the basal most clade, these are morphologically diverse groups of species mostly found in cold waters. The raising of the family Pallenopsidae is supported, while Eurycyde and Ascorhynchus are definitely separated from Ammotheidae. The four fossil taxa are grouped within living Pycnogonida, instead of being an early derived clade. This phylogeny represents a solid framework to work towards the understanding of pycnogonid systematics, providing a data set and a testable hypothesis that indicate those clades that need severe testing, especially some of the deep nodes of the pycnogonid tree and the relationships of ammotheid and callipallenid forms. The inclusion of more rare taxa and additional sources of evidence are necessary for a phylogenetic classification of the Pycnogonida. © The Willi Hennig Society 2006.  相似文献

We investigated the evolution of fruit characters, animals versus abiotic dispersal modes, life forms and geographical distribution, in the large, mostly tropical, family Rubiaceae. As a basis for our analysis we used a phylogenetic tree derived from chloroplast DNA variation. Fleshy fruits have evolved independently at least 12 times in the family. Most of these originations appear to have occurred during Eocene to Oligocene, i.e. the radiation period for some animal taxa (bird families, mammal orders) comprising most extant dispersers of Rubiaceae fruits. Changes of dispersal modes may be of more recent origin in a few cases, e.g. evolution of drupes in some lineages, and shifts from drupes to nuts. The distribution of fruit characters suggested that in several lineages animal-dispersed fruits, such as berries and drupes have remained largely unaltered since the time of origination. This is in contrast to the occurrence of winged seeds in capsules, and pterophylls, i.e. enlarged calyx lobes promoting wind dispersal of fruits, which apparently have shifted more frequently during evolution, indicating a difference in 'phylogenetic plasticity' between modes of animal and wind dispersal.
Animal dispersal was over-represented among genera dominated by shrubs, whereas abiotic dispersal was most prevalent among herbaceous genera. Drupes were over-represented in groups with transoceanic distributions, and on islands, indicating dispersal over long distances, probably by birds. In contrast, no evidence was found to support the view that animal dispersal in general enhances long distance dispersal. We also analysed geographical patterns on the tribal level but these were too complex to yield any resolved area cladograms due to the occurrence of many widespread taxa and area redundancy.  相似文献

The subsection Neriiflora Sleumer is one of the largest subsections of Rhododendron subgenus Hymenanthes, containing 27 species, 8 subspecies and 24 varieties. All the species are divided into four groups according to morphological characters, relationships among the species and their geographical distribution. The evolution and relationships of the group are discussed. The Group D is of highly specialized morphological characters. The subsection has its modern distribution center in the Hengduan Mountains in south-westernChina.  相似文献

Distance analysis and factor analysis, based on Q-mode correlation coefficients, were applied to 23 craniofacial measurements in 1,802 recent and prehistoric crania from major geographical areas of the Old World. The major findings are as follows: 1) Australians show closer similarities to African populations than to Melanesians. 2) Recent Europeans align with East Asians, and early West Asians resemble Africans. 3) The Asian population complex with regional difference between northern and southern members is manifest. 4) Clinal variations of craniofacial features can be detected in the Afro-European region on the one hand, and Australasian and East Asian region on the other hand. 5) The craniofacial variations of major geographical groups are not necessarily consistent with their geographical distribution pattern. This may be a sign that the evolutionary divergence in craniofacial shape among recent populations of different geographical areas is of a highly limited degree. Taking all of these into account, a single origin for anatomically modern humans is the most parsimonious interpretation of the craniofacial variations presented in this study. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism(SD) and geographic variation(GV) are widespread in snakes. Protobothrops mucrosquamatus(Cantor 1839) is one of the most common Asian venomous snakes with a wide geographical distribution. We examined SD and GV patterns for this species by using multivariate statistical analyses of external morphological characters scored from specimens from the Mainland China. The result displayed that SD was significant in several external characters in P. mucrosquamatus, and the male P. mucrosquamatus formed two distinct clusters(Hainan Island and mainland China), but the females did not. Based on our present work and the other data, we concluded that no significantly intraspecific differentiation is present within this species.  相似文献

In the present thesis, a detailed review of the literature was given on the Betulaceae. Some new data was provided based on the author’s studies in order to analyze various characters, such as inflorescence, flower, pollen and leaf epidermis, among the genera treated. The polarity of the characters was determined according to the criteria of outgroup comparison and compatibility analysis. A cladistic analysis was made using the methods of Maximal Same Steps and Minimal Parallel Evolution developed by Xu (1993). The generic distributions in both modern and fossil times were outlined, and their distribution center, place and time of origin and the way of dispersal were discussed. An attempt was made to discuss early differentiation, geographical radiation and morphological evolution of the family on the background of paleogeography and paleoclimatology, tracing back as far as the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary. Finally, supraspecific taxa, from section to tribe, were systematically arranged.  相似文献

A group of small and transparent Asian noodlefishes (Osmeriformes: Salangidae) are commercially important fishery species, however, interrelationships among these fishes remain unresolved in previous studies using mitochondrial markers. We re-examine phylogenetic relationships of Salangidae by including complete taxon sampling, based on seven nuclear loci and one mitochondrial gene using a multilocus coalescence-based species-tree method. Our results show a well-resolved phylogeny of Salangidae that does not agree with previous hypotheses. The topology test suggests that our hypothesis represents the most likely phylogeny. Using the inferred species-tree as criterion, we recombine the rank of subfamilies and genera in the Salangidae, and erect a new genus Neosalangichthys. Our revised classification of Salangidae is well supported by reinterpreting previously proposed diagnostic characters. Finally, re-defined synapomorphic characters are used to erect a key to the genera of Salangidae.  相似文献

Twenty one Trypanosoma cruzi stocks from humans, domiciliary triatomines and one sylvatic animal of different areas of Paraguay were subjected to isoenzyme analysis. Thirteen enzyme systems (15 loci in total) were studied. MN cl2 (clonets 39) and SO34 cl4 (clonets 20) were used as references. Relationships between stocks were depicted by an UPGMA dendrogram constructed using the Jaccard's distances matrix. Among the Paraguayan stocks 14 zymodemes were identified (Par1 to Par14), Par 5 being the most frequent. Polymorphism rate and clonal diversity were 0.73 and 0.93, respectively. Average number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 2.5 (range 2-4). These measurements show a high diversity, which is confirmed by the dendrogram topology. All stocks belong to the same lineage, as MN cl2 reference strain (T. cruzi II). Moreover three distinct subgroups were identified and two of them correspond to Brazilian and Bolivian zymodemes, respectively. The third subgroup, the most common in Paraguay, is related to Tulahuen stock. The large geographical distribution of some zymodemes agrees with the hypothesis of clonality for T. cruzi populations. However sample size was not adequate to detect genetic recombination in any single locality.  相似文献

This is the most comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the Characidae to date and the first large-scale hypothesis of the family, combining myriad morphological data with molecular information. A total of 520 morphological characters were analysed herein, of which 98 are newly defined. Among the analysed taxa, 259 species were coded by examining specimens, three fossil species were coded from the literature, one species was coded almost completely from published figures, 122 were partially coded from the literature, and 88 were analysed exclusively from molecular data. The total number of species in the analysed dataset is 473. Analyses were made by parsimony under equal and extended implied weighting with a broad range of parameters. The final hypothesis was selected using a stability criterion that chooses among the most parsimonious trees of all searches. It was found by weighting molecular characters with the average homoplasy of entire partitions (markers). The resulting hypothesis is congruent with previous molecular-based phylogenies of the family. The Characidae are monophyletic, with four main clades: the Spintherobolinae new subfamily; an expanded Stethaprioninae including the Grundulini, Gymnocharacini, Rhoadsiini and Stethaprionini; the Stevardiinae; and a clade composed of the Aphyocharacinae, Characinae, Cheirodontinae, Exodontinae and Tetragonopterinae. Also, a stem Characidae was found, as formed by the Eocene–Oligocene genera †Bryconetes and †Paleotetra as successive sister groups of extant members of the family. A subfamilial classification is proposed, but deep changes in the systematics that are beyond the scope of this study are still needed to classify the Characidae into monophyletic genera.  相似文献

Gliridae is a small family of rodents including three subfamilies: the Eurasian Glirinae (with three genera) and Leithiinae (with four genera) and the African Graphiurinae (with a single genus). Phylogenetic relationships among these eight genera are not fully resolved based on morphological characters. Moreover, the genus Graphiurus is characterized by numerous peculiar features (morphological characters and geographical distribution), raising the question of its relationships to the family Gliridae. The phylogenetic position of Graphiurus and the intra-Gliridae relationships are here addressed by a molecular analysis of 12S RNA and cytochrome b mitochondrial gene sequences for six glirid genera. Phylogenetic analyses are performed with three construction methods (neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood) and tests of alternative topologies with respect to the most likely. Our analyses reveal that Graphiurus is clearly a member of the Gliridae, refuting the hypothesis that the family could be paraphyletic. Among Gliridae, phylogenetic relationships are poorly resolved: the Leithiinae could be monophyletic, there is no support for the subfamily Glirinae, and the closest relative of Graphiurus is not identified. The inclusion of Graphiurus among Gliridae allows us to postulate that its hystricomorphous condition has been achieved convergently with other hystricomorphous rodents.  相似文献

Comparisons were made between populations of Agrostemma githagogrowing amongst a variety of crops and collected in differentparts of Europe to examine the effects of geographical locationand crop plant associations on selective adaptation of the species. Populations varied from one another in their responses to photoperiod, their season of maturity, the partitioning of resources betweenleaves, stems, and flowers, and in characters such as floriferousness, mean seed weight, and seed production per plant. Analogies drawnbetween these characters and horticultural qualities of cropplants such as earliness, leafiness, or seed production suggestthat it is possible that variations differentiating strainsof crop plants may be present prior to their introduction todeliberate cultivation as a result of their occurrence in differentlocations. This implies that early cultivators of secondarycrop plants in particular might have been able to take advantageof pre-existing diversity to extend cropping seasons, or tomake use of special characters without need for deliberate selectionor forethought.  相似文献

Thirty-seven characters were measured on greenhouse grown progenies of twenty-three populations representing, for Collomia linearis, a broad geographical and ecological distribution in western North America. Twelve vegetative and seventeen floral characters showed significant among-population/within-population variance ratios (F-statistics). Overall, floral characters showed higher F-statistics than did vegetative characters. The F-statistics and character means were used to construct phenograms based on weighted similarity measures and single-linkage clustering. With the exception of a homogeneous cluster comprising northern Rocky Mountain OTUs, relationships based on floral characters were geographically random. No clearly defined morphological trends toward increased autogamy were observed in association with geographical or ecological distribution. Several clustering relationships, based on vegetative characters, were interpreted as representing geographically unrelated genotypes convergent with respect to ecotypic differentiation. The most distinctive clusters of OTUs in the vegetative phenogram were associated with subalpine and wet meadow sites, habitats considered as ecologically marginal for the species. Comparison of the two phenograms revealed considerable disparity between relationships based on floral characters and those based on vegetative characters. This disparity lends support to the hypothesis that floral and vegetative character combinations are subject to independent selective processes. The absence of polyploidy or mitotically detectable chromosomal rearrangements indicates that the observed variation among widely separated populations represents either divergence or convergence via genetic differentiation at the diploid level.  相似文献

The grasshopper family Catantopidae is a well-known group, whose members include some of the most notorious agricultural pests. The existing classifications of the family are mostly utilitarian rather than being based on phylogenetic analysis and therefore unable to provide the stability desired for such an economically important group. In the present study, we present the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of the family based on morphology. By extensively sampling from the Chinese fauna, we included in the present analysis multiple representatives of each of the previously recognized tribes in the family. In total, we examined 94 genera represented by 240 species and evaluated 116 characters, including 84 for external morphology and 32 for male genitalia. The final matrix consists of 86 ingroup taxa and 88 characters. Our phylogenetic analyses resulted in a high resolution of the basal relationships of the family while showed considerable uncertainty about the relationships among some crown taxa. We further evaluated the usefulness of morphological characters in phylogeny reconstruction of the catantopids by examining character fit to the shortest trees found, and contrary to previous suggestions, our results suggest that genitalia characters are not as informative as external morphology in inferring higher-level relationship. We further suggest that earlier classification systems of grasshoppers in general and Catantopidae in particular most probably consist of many groups that are not natural due the heavy reliance on genitalia features and need to be revised in the light of future phylogenetic studies. Finally, we outlined a tentative classification scheme based on the results of our phylogenetic analysis.  相似文献
