Variation in seed traits is a well‐known phenomenon affecting plant ecology and evolution. Here we describe, for the first time, a bimodal colour pattern of individual seeds, proposing an adaptive explanation, using Pinus halepensis as a model. Pinus halepensis disperses its seeds either by wind on hot dry days, from regular cones, or after fires, mainly from serotinous cones. Post‐dispersal seeds are exposed to strong predation by passerine birds, making crypsis important for seed survival. Individual seeds from non‐serotinous cones have a bimodal colour pattern: one side is light brown and the other black, exposing only one colour when lying on the ground. Serotinous cones from most trees have seeds with similar bimodal colour patterns, whereas seeds from serotinous cones of some trees are light brown on both sides. The dark side provides the seed with better crypsis on dark soils, whereas the light‐brown side is better adapted to light‐coloured soils, and mainly to light‐grey ash‐covered soil, which is the natural post‐fire regeneration niche of P. halepensis. The relative reflection curves of the black and brown seed colours differ, and their calculated relative chromatic distance is 5: meaning that seed‐predating passerine birds see them differently, and probably prefer seeds that present a higher contrast against the soil background. We propose that such a bimodal colour pattern of individual seeds is probably an overlooked general phenomenon mainly linked to seed dispersal in post‐fire and other heterogeneous environments. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 109 , 271–278.  相似文献

The colour of seawater is a topic of daily discussion among diver fishermen in the Dominican Republic, who navigate shifting ocean environments alongside conservation politics. While conservation policies often target fishing as the main cause of declines in the health of marine ecologies, fishermen use colour to create alternative narratives about changing climates. Describing the sea as blue, black, brown, green, whitewash, purple, and chocolate, divers point to the broader causes of shifting seascapes while chronicling their affective and embodied consequences. Based on ethnographic fieldwork among Dominican diver fishermen, this article explores the colour of seawater as a lens for understanding the physical, affective, social, and political consequences of changing climates for communities who are deeply entangled in shifting sea ecologies. For diver fishermen, whose engagements with the sea depend on visibility, colours provide ways of interpreting fishing possibilities, navigating ocean spaces, and measuring the effects of changing environments. Given the centrality of colour perception in fishermen's lives, this article argues that colours provide an alternative narrative about changing climates, linking shifting marine conditions to global systemic problems, rather than blaming changes in environmental conditions on supposedly irresponsible practices of local people.  相似文献

The marine snail, Littoraria filosa, is polymorphic for shell colour, with yellow, brown, and pink morphs that correspond in both appearance and frequency to the predominant background colours of its habitat. Previous research on this polymorphism has found indirect evidence of apostatic selection and selection for crypsis by unknown agents, probably crabs, and direct evidence of selection for crypsis by the parasitoid fly Sarcophaga megafilosia. In the present study, we report on field experiments to investigate whether S. megafilosia and shell‐crushing predators exert apostatic selection on L. filosa. For S. megafilosia, seven experimental treatments containing yellow and brown snails in the proportions of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, and 0.9 of each colour were established on mangrove trees and used to separately quantify the proportions of each colour attacked on grey/brown trunks and yellow/green leaves. The results obtained confirmed an earlier finding of selection for crypsis, but only showed slight, but significant, anti‐apostatic selection by S. megafilosia. For shell‐crushing predators, seven experimental treatments containing yellow and brown snails in the proportions of 0.08, 0.17, 0.33, 0.50, 0.66, 0.83, and 0.92 were established on two types of trees that differed in their background proportions of brown and green: (1) trees which had been pruned of approximately 90% of their foliage and (2) unpruned trees. The results obtained showed both selection for crypsis and apostatic selection. Furthermore, a selectively neutral frequency for yellow L. filosa was found for each background, and was less on pruned trees than unpruned ones (and vice versa for brown L. filosa), which can therefore account for the maintenance of a colour polymorphism where the proportions of each morph tend to resemble and correspond in frequency to the colours of the background. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 62–71.  相似文献

Summary Intervarietal crosses in watermelon, Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Mansf., involving six parents with black (J18-1 and J 75), brown (J56-1 and N.H. Midget), red (Bykovski-199) or light cream (Red Nectar) seed-coat colour were made. Parents, F1, F2 and backcross populations were evaluated for their phenotypic expressions with regard to the seed-coat colours involved. Black colour was monogenically dominant over brown light cream and red colour of seed-coat separately or independently. Red colour was dominant over light cream colour of seed-coat by a single pair of genes. The light cream colour was recessive to the brown seed-coat colour of watermelon where a single pair of genes was involved.  相似文献

The global prevalence of red and black fruits has still not been explained. Hypotheses based on innate consumer preferences have been tested and rejected. Though colour itself plays an important role in animal foraging, it is only one component of signals. Another major component are colour contrasts against background achieving the conspicuousness of signals. In order to evaluate which signal component determines consumers behaviour, we measured fruit colour and colour contrasts of 43 species against their natural background under ambient light conditions. Red and black fruits exhibit stronger contrasts and are therefore more conspicuous to consumers than fruits of other colours. Subsequently, trials were carried out to determine whether colour or conspicuousness influences avian food choice. Four bird species strongly preferred contrasting red–green or black–green over uni-coloured red, green, or black fruit displays, while no preference for particular hues was found. We therefore hypothesize that conspicuousness determines avian food selection and define the contrast hypothesis: Diurnal dispersers select fruit colours based on their conspicuousness and not their colour itself.
Because colour vision is an ancient trait, the entire heterogeneous group of frugivorous birds most likely perceives conspicuousness uniformly over evolutionary time spans. Conspicuousness has thus the potential to explain the global prevalence of red and black fruits.  相似文献

Elaborate ornamental traits are commonly assumed to be honest signals of individual quality, owing to the presumed costs involved in their production and/or maintenance. Such traits are often highly variable, possibly because of condition-dependence and/or high underlying genetic variation, and it has been suggested that their expression should be more sensitive to condition and/or more heritable than non-ornamental traits. Many bird species display colourful plumage with multiple distinct patches of different developmental origins, forming complex colour phenotypes. Despite this complexity, colourful ornaments are often studied in isolation, without comparison to suitable non-ornamental controls. Based on plumage reflectance data collected over 8 years, we assessed the signalling potential of the multidimensional male colour phenotype in a tropical bird: the purple-crowned fairy-wren Malurus coronatus. Specifically, we tested the predictions that the expression of putative ornamental colours (purple and black – the breeding colours – and blue) is (1) more variable, (2) more heritable and (3) more condition-dependent compared to year-round non-ornamental colours (buff-white and brown). Our results show that ornamental colours exhibit greater levels of variability, and some chromatic components of purple and blue colouration appear slightly heritable (h² = 0.19–0.30). However, contrary to predictions of heightened condition-dependence in ornaments, only brightness of the buff-white and brown colouration increased with male body condition, although brightness of the purple colouration was related to male age as expected. Population differences in visual environment can lead to divergence in multiple components of animal coloration including signalling traits and colour patterns important for camouflage. Divergence may reflect selection imposed by different receivers (conspecifics, predators), which depends in turn on the location of the colour patch. We tested for local adaptation of two genetically and phenotypically divergent lineages of a rock‐inhabiting lizard, Ctenophorus decresii, by comparing the visual contrast of colour patches to different receivers in native and non‐native environments. The lineages differ most notably in male throat coloration, which is polymorphic in the northern lineage and monomorphic in the southern lineage, but also differ in dorsal and lateral coloration, which is visible to both conspecifics and potential predators. Using models of animal colour vision, we assessed whether lineage‐specific throat, dorsal and lateral coloration enhanced conspicuousness to conspecifics, increased crypsis to birds or both, respectively, when viewed against the predominant backgrounds from each lineage. Throat colours were no more conspicuous against native than non‐native rock but contrasted more strongly with native lichen, which occurs patchily on rocks inhabited by C. decresii. Conversely, neck coloration (lateral) more closely matched native lichen. Furthermore, although dorsal coloration of southern males was consistently more conspicuous to birds than that of northern males, both lineages had similar absolute conspicuousness against their native backgrounds. Combined, our results are consistent with local adaptation of multiple colour traits in relation to multiple receivers, suggesting that geographic variation in background colour has influenced the evolution of lineage‐specific coloration in C. decresii.  相似文献

Birds'' eggshells are renowned for their striking colours and varied patterns. Although often considered exceptionally diverse, we report that avian eggshell coloration, sampled here across the full phylogenetic diversity of birds, occupies only 0.08–0.10% of the avian perceivable colour space. The concentrations of the two known tetrapyrrole eggshell pigments (protoporphyrin and biliverdin) are generally poor predictors of colour, both intra- and interspecifically. Here, we show that the constrained diversity of eggshell coloration can be accurately predicted by colour mixing models based on the relative contribution of both pigments and we demonstrate that the models'' predictions can be improved by accounting for the reflectance of the eggshell''s calcium carbonate matrix. The establishment of these proximate links between pigmentation and colour will enable future tests of hypotheses on the functions of perceived avian eggshell colours that depend on eggshell chemistry. More generally, colour mixing models are not limited to avian eggshell colours but apply to any natural colour. Our approach illustrates how modelling can aid the understanding of constraints on phenotypic diversity.  相似文献

Colour preferences from sexual or social contexts are assumed to have arisen owing to preferences for specific kinds of food, representing a sensory bias, but once colour preferences have evolved in a sexual context, they may also be expressed during foraging. We tested whether preferences for specific body colours (i.e. plumage and soft parts) were related to colour preferences for grit ingested by birds. Birds eat grit to facilitate break down of food by the gizzard, and this function is independent of the colour of grit, but depends on the physical properties of stones. Bird species were significantly consistent in colour of grit, and grit of different colours varied in prevalence among species, even when analyses were restricted to a sample from a single locality. There were positive correlations between presence of lilac and red grit in the gizzard and presence of sexually dichromatic lilac and red colour on the body. There was a positive correlation between red grit colour and red sexually monochromatic body colour. Bird species with many different sexual colours, but not sexually monochromatic colours on their body had many different colours of grit. Males had more lilac and red grit than females, with this effect differing among species, whereas that was not the case for grit of other colours. These findings are consistent with the sensory bias hypothesis that birds express preferences for grit of specific colours and a high diversity of colours related to sexual colouration of the body, even when the colour of such grit is only visible to the individual at the moment of ingestion.  相似文献

Predators often avoid aposematic prey as a result of aversions to particular prey signals (e.g., bright colours and noxious odours). These aversions may be flexible, that is, they can be reinforced or extinguished with experience. As such, we might expect populations to differ in their biases against certain prey characteristics (e.g., colour or pattern) depending on the prey available in the community. Here, we tested whether the jumping spider, Habronattus brunneus(Salticidae), exhibits colour biases against red prey using choice tests with novel (artificially coloured) prey, and then went on to examine how these biases differ across four geographically distinct focal populations. We then conducted preliminary field surveys at each of these four sites to explore differences in habitat type and prey availability. Overall, we found that field‐caught Hbrunneusexhibited a bias against the colour red (compared with black) when tested with artificially coloured prey in the laboratory. However, the degree of colour bias varied among our four focal populations (with two populations exhibiting strong biases against red and two showing no colour biases). Preliminary habitat and prey surveys suggest that these populations also differed in both habitat structure (percentage of grass, leaf litter and bare ground) and prey availability across many taxa, suggesting that the spiders from each population may have been exposed to, and had experiences with, different potential prey. We discuss how prey availability may influence colour biases in predators, as well as how predator experience may shape the evolution of prey colour signals.  相似文献

Conspicuousness is an important feature of warning coloration. One hypothesis for its function is that it increases signal efficacy by facilitating avoidance learning. An alternative, based on the handicap hypothesis, suggests that the degree of conspicuousness holds information directly about the quality of the prey, and that predators associate and learn about the conspicuousness of the coloration, and not the actual colour pattern. We studied the relative importance of signal contrast and the colours of signals for predator attention during discrimination. We used young chicks, Gallus gallus domesticus, as predators and small blue or red paper cones on either matching or contrasting paper backgrounds as stimuli associated with palatable or unpalatable chick crumbs. In four treatment groups, birds could use either cone and/or background colour, cone colour only, background colour only or cone-to-background contrast as cues for discrimination. Only birds in the contrast treatment failed to learn their discrimination task. Birds that had a choice between cone and background colour as cues used the cone colour and they learned the task faster than did birds that had to use background colour as a cue. The results suggest that birds primarily attend to the colours of signals and disregard contrast in discrimination tasks; they thus fail to support a handicap function of conspicuous aposematic coloration. Examining differences in colour plasticity between closely‐related species in relation to the heterogeneity of background colours found in their respective habitats may offer important insight into how cryptic colour change evolves in natural populations. In the present study, we examined whether nonbreeding dorsal body coloration has diverged between sympatric species of stickleback along with changes in habitat‐specific background colours. The small, limnetic species primarily occupies the pelagic zone and the large, benthic species inhabits the littoral zone. We placed benthic and limnetic sticklebacks against extremes of habitat background colours and measured their degree of background matching and colour plasticity. Benthics matched the littoral background colour more closely than did the limnetics, although there was no difference between species in their resemblance to the pelagic background colour. Benthics were able to resemble both background colours by exhibiting greater directional colour plasticity in their dorsal body coloration than limnetics, which may be an adaptive response to the greater spectral heterogeneity of the littoral zone. An apparent predominance of plant taxa with pale flowers in the alpine floras of Australia and New Zealand may be due to the prevalence of insects, such as flies, that prefer pale colours and the absence of other types of potential pollinators that are attracted to bright colours such as social bees and birds. In this study, the diversity of flower colours, and the preference of insects for different colours were examined for the largest contiguous alpine area in Australia, around Mt Kosciuszko. Out of an alpine flora of 204 taxa, 127 species were found to have large showy flowers. The most common flower colour among these taxa was white (53.5%), then yellow (21.3%), followed by pink (6.3%), and cream (6.3%). Only a handful of taxa had red, blue, brown, green, orange or purple flowers. When the colour preference of insects was tested using five different coloured traps (white, yellow, orange, red and purple), the most successful traps were white then yellow, with these two colours accounting for 66% of all individual insects collected. Diptera were the most common insects caught (576 insects greater than 4 mm in length, 31 morphotaxa) showing an apparent preference for white and yellow coloured traps over others. Therefore, the results add some support to the proposition that the 'white' flora of the Australian Alps may be associated with the colour preference of flies, which have previously been found to be the most common type of pollinators in the Kosciuszko alpine zone.  相似文献

Developmental constraints and trade-offs can limit diversity, but organisms have repeatedly evolved morphological innovations that overcome these limits by expanding the range and functionality of traits. Iridescent colours in birds are commonly produced by melanin-containing organelles (melanosomes) organized into nanostructured arrays within feather barbules. Variation in array type (e.g. multilayers and photonic crystals, PCs) is known to have remarkable effects on plumage colour, but the optical consequences of variation in melanosome shape remain poorly understood. Here, we used a combination of spectrophotometric, experimental and theoretical methods to test how melanosome hollowness—a morphological innovation largely restricted to birds—affects feather colour. Optical analyses of hexagonal close-packed arrays of hollow melanosomes in two species, wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) and violet-backed starlings (Cinnyricinclus leucogaster), indicated that they function as two-dimensional PCs. Incorporation of a larger dataset and optical modelling showed that, compared with solid melanosomes, hollow melanosomes allow birds to produce distinct colours with the same energetically favourable, close-packed configurations. These data suggest that a morphological novelty has, at least in part, allowed birds to achieve their vast morphological and colour diversity.  相似文献

Abstract The presence of aedine mosquito eggshells in soil has recently been used to delineate oviposition patterns in coastal wetlands. However, the colour of eggshells may reveal information about the oviposition activity of mosquitoes that is not evident from the density and distribution of eggshells alone. This study describes the rate of colour change of newly hatched eggshells of Ochlerotatus (Ochlerotatus) vigilax , the common saltmarsh mosquito. In March 1996, eggshells were buried in soil of five mosquito-breeding sites on Kooragang Island, NSW. Eggshells were graded by colour using Munsell® soil-colour charts. Seventy-five percent of newly hatched eggshells were black and 25% were dark brown in colour. Black eggshells faded quickly to lighter shades of brown, so that none were recovered 20 months after commencement of the study. Eggshells faded to a median of dark brown after 13 months and medium brown after 2 years. In another study, significant differences in colour frequency between existing saltmarsh and two recently created oviposition sites were found; the latter site being characterised by numerous black and dark-brown eggshells and very few light-brown eggshells. The results suggest that active and inactive oviposition sites may be identified using the frequency distribution of eggshell colours based on large numbers of eggshells, whereas the colour of individual eggshells only coarsely reflects age since eclosion.  相似文献

Most of the results from past experiments with wild birds and green and brown pastry 'baits' have suggested that disproportionately more of the rare forms are eaten when bait density is high (i.e. selection is anti-apostatic). In two separate series of experiments we presented birds with dishes containing 270 baits of one colour and 30 of another. In series I, five different pairs of colours were presented simultaneously to wild birds at two sites. One colour of each pair was common at one site and the same colour was rare at the other site. After 35 days the ratios of the colours were reversed and the dishes were presented for another 35 days. There was a statistically significant tendency for the colours to be at a higher risk when rare. In series II, three caged blackbirds were offered green and brown baits in two dishes simultaneously; in one dish green was rare and in the other brown was rare. Selection over 6 days was anti-apostatic for all three birds combined but the data proved heterogeneous both between and within individuals. At any one time, each bird tended to concentrate on one colour, irrespective of whether that colour was rare or common. We believe that this behaviour leads to anti-apostatic selection, as has been observed in these and other experiments with pastry prey.  相似文献

In the reproductive season, mature females of the fiddler crab Uca perplexa leave their burrows and wander about their habitat for mating. To clarify whether the fiddler crabs respond to colour or luminosity, I examined the behavioural responses of the males to the wandering females before and after the females were painted white, red, black or blue. The behaviours of the males were categorized into three types: lateral–circular wave and lateral–straight wave for courting, and repelling. Before painting, almost all of the males courted the females. After painting, significantly fewer males courted the red-, black- and blue-painted females than courted the white-painted females. These results mean that the fiddler crabs can discriminate colours or luminosity. The role of body colour as a visual signal in crab society is discussed.  相似文献

Insectivorous birds may adjust their foraging strategies to exploit changes in resource distributions. Arthropod prey strongly influence habitat‐specific persistence of long‐distance migrant passerines in their wintering areas, and arthropods are strongly affected by rainfall. However, the effect of drought on the dynamics of avian foraging ecology as resources shift is not well understood. We captured female American Redstarts (Setophaga ruticilla) and studied their foraging behavior in high‐quality (evergreen black mangrove) and low‐quality (deciduous scrub) habitat in Jamaica during the winter of 1995–1996. As is typical in southwestern Jamaica, conditions became drier as spring approached and many trees in scrub lost most of their leaves; mangrove trees maintained most of their leaf cover. Birds in scrub lost more mass than those in mangrove, and scrub birds shifted to using more aerial (and fewer near‐perch) maneuvers. In scrub, but not in mangrove, the proportion of wing‐powered movements and aerial foraging maneuvers was positively correlated with mass corrected by body size. In both habitats, attack rate was negatively correlated with body condition. Therefore, redstarts in scrub that maintained body condition were likely better able to use energetically expensive aerial maneuvers and wing‐powered search movements to exploit large, calorie‐rich flying arthropods. As the scrub dried over the course of the winter, the shift in foraging tactic may have allowed some birds to forage more efficiently (i.e., lower attack rate), likely facilitating maintenance of good body condition.  相似文献

Shell colour polymorphism was examined in a population of the polyplacophoran Ischnochiton striolatus (Gray, 1828) living on intertidal rocks in Búzios, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Nine shell colours were identified: green (most common), grey, pink, cream, brown, orange, white, black and purple. The species habitat was also examined using three rock characteristics: volume; turnover frequency, caused by hydrodynamic disturbance; and chromatic composition. Chitons were most frequently encountered on the undersides of rocks of intermediate volume which experienced medium-intensity hydrodynamic disturbance, and which harboured a chromatically rich biotic community. These findings were in agreement with the Intermediate Disturbance Hypothesis. As chitons depend on the biotic community on rocks for food and shelter, a greater variety of colours could increase the chances of camouflage of the morphs against the background, favouring crypsis. It is likely that the frequency at which intermediate-volume rocks are overturned − thus exposing the chitons on them to light − would be sufficient for visual predators to act as selective agents.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 85 , 543–548.  相似文献
