Twenty days after hatching, a single stock of Atlantic herring ( Clupea harengus L.) larvae, cultured in the presence of rotifers and Artemia nauplii but showing little or no active feeding behaviour, displayed clear signs of starvation. Three groups of fish were distinguished: group I was generally pinhead-shaped, tended to swim with a spinning motion and floated vertically; group 2 lay moribund on the bottom of the tank; group 3 showed normal, active swimming behaviour. Fatty acids of total lipid extracted from groups 1 and 2 differed from group 3 in having markedly reduced percentages of 20:5n-3, 22:6n-3, 20:1 and 22:1. We conclude that individuals within a single stock of cultured herring larvae respond differently to starvation and that this generates well defined behavioural differences which correlate with levels of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in body lipid. The timing of the development of schooling behaviour in Atlantic herring Clupea harengus and the quantitative and qualitative evolution of such behaviour in the larval and post-metamorphic stages were investigated with a simulation model and experimental observations of laboratory-reared fish. Herring larvae started to develop schooling behaviour between the lengths of 35 and 40 mm. This coincided with the beginning of metamorphosis, characterized by ontogenetic changes which require a switch to a different antipredator strategy from that employed by early larvae, while providing the sensory and anatomical mechanisms necessary for the formation of schools. Schooling behaviour was established at the end of metamorphosis (50–55 mm) and its characteristics continued to evolve throughout the early juvenile stage. A critical period in terms of vulnerability to predation is expected between the end of the larval and beginning of the juvenile stages, before schooling behaviour is fully developed. The implications of some of the results for the methodology of future studies are also discussed. 相似文献

Laboratory experiments investigated changes in the vulnerability of herring to predation by whiting during growth from <34 to >80mm in length, Premetamorphic herring (<50mm) failed to react to c . 50% of attacks by the predator, but this was reduced to c . 20% in postmetamorphic fish. Premetamorphic herring failing to react had c. 30% probability of survival due to unforced errors by the predator (unsuccessful attacks that did not elicit a reaction by the prey), but these errors did not occur after herring metamorphosis. The loss of the advantage of lower conspicuousness following metamorphosis was counterbalanced by increased reactivity. Antipredator benefits should increase with schooling behaviour (first evident in experiments at c . 50 mm), so predation mortality should decrease in postmetamorphic herring in the sea. Metamorphosis itself would be associated with high predation risk since conspicuousness is enhanced but reactivity and schooling behaviour are still not fully developed. 相似文献

Stomach contents from lesser sandeel Ammodytes marinus and herring Clupea harengus caught at one and three stations, respectively, were analysed to investigate predation intensity on capelin Mallotus villosus larvae. Most capelin larvae were found in the anterior sections of the stomachs close to the oesophagus, indicating that rapid digestion rates of larvae reduced the abundance in the posterior sections. The anterior sections of the stomachs had alternating layers of either copepods or capelin larvae and krill. This shows that the individual predators switched between feeding on either copepods or on krill and capelin larvae. A total of 549 capelin larvae was found in 440 fish stomachs. Capelin larvae were found in 20% of the sandeel stomachs, and 24, 34 and 62% of the stomachs from the three herring stations, respectively. Many of the predator stomachs contained more than five larvae, and up to 28 larvae were found in one herring stomach. The herring appeared to prey selectively on the largest capelin larvae, and the number of larvae per stomach was much higher in stomachs where krill had recently been eaten than where copepods were dominant. The predation intensity measured in this study is much higher than reported in earlier studies, and it is suggested that the predators were feeding using a searching image, and that the concentrations of alternative prey (copepods and krill) varied around a switching threshold. 相似文献

The sex determination system of Atlantic herring Clupea harengus L., a commercially important fish, was investigated. Low coverage whole-genome sequencing of 48 females and 55 males and a genome-wide association study revealed two regions on chromosomes 8 and 21 associated with sex. The genotyping data of the single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with sex showed that 99.4% of the available female genotypes were homozygous, whereas 68.6% of the available male genotypes were heterozygous. This is close to the theoretical expectation of homo/heterozygous distribution at low sequencing coverage when the males are factually heterozygous. This suggested a male heterogametic sex determination system in C. harengus, consistent with other species within the Clupeiformes group. There were 76 protein coding genes on the sex regions but none of these genes were previously reported master sex regulation genes, or obviously related to sex determination. However, many of these genes are expressed in testis or ovary in other species, but the exact genes controlling sex determination in C. harengus could not be identified. 相似文献

Predation encounters were staged in the laboratory between yearling herring, Clupea harengus L., 66 to 104 mm t.l. , and herring larvae, 8 to 30 mm t.l. ., at 8,11 and 14 o C. Video records were used to quantify prey behaviour. Prey responsiveness, reactive distance, response latency, and apparent looming threshold were not affected by temperature. Response speeds increased with temperature. Predator error rate and capture success showed no consistent thermal effects. Although the experiments could not fully evaluate the influence of temperature on the predators, results suggest that the predator's performance largely governs the outcome of an attack on a larva and that higher temperatures favour the predator by increasing the frequency of its encounter with prey. 相似文献

The efficiencies of water absorption from the guts of the larvae of herring ( Clupea harengus L.) and turbot ( Scophthalmus maximus L.) were estimated by two methods, The first method was based on the differences in the rates of accumulation, by drinking, and clearance from the gut of radiolabelled inert markers. The second method used the equilibrium level of radioactivity in the larvae to measure the concentration of the markers in the gut above background as water is absorbed from the gut. Water absorption efficiencies for herring larvae drinking sea water were estimated to be 77% using both methods. When external salinity was reduced to 50% sea water, drinking rates and water absorption efficiency in herring larvae fell substantially.

Although temperature had a marked effect on both the rate of drinking and water absorption, there was no significant thermal effect on the efficiency of absorption from the guts of turbot larvae. Variation in the survival of herring between the egg stage and the age of recruitment to the spawning population has been examined for seven Atlantic herring populations in northern European waters. The sources of the variation have been partitioned between density-dependent and density-independent factors. The magnitude of the density-independent component was found to be related to the scale of the processes controlling the dispersion and distribution of larvae from the various populations. We conclude that the spawning strategies of some populations are adapted to oceanographic conditions to maximize the probability of a particular larval transport pattern, although no single model could account for all spawning strategies. 相似文献

Utilization of storage lipids and storage proteins by non-feeding north-west Atlantic herring was assessed under conditions of: (1) concurrent gonad maturation and overwintering periods with differing rates of gonad development for males and females (spring-spawncrs); (2) overwintering, reproductively dormant and spent males and females (autumn-spawners); and (3) approximately equivalent rates of gonad development during late summer for males and females (autumn-spawners). Storage lipids were depleted by all non-feeding fish but storage proteins were depleted only by herring with measurable gonad development during the observation period independently of season (female spring-spawners, maturing male and female autumn-spawners). The analyses indicate that storage lipids sustain routine and active metabolism while storage proteins are utilized to develop gonad. Therefore, the relative investment into reproduction versus routine and active metabolism can be evaluated separately for non-feeding herring using readily obtainable tissue proximate composition data. 相似文献

为了提高养殖卤虫的饵料营养价值,了解其不同生长阶段营养成分变化情况,采用单因子试验研究了8种饵料(三角褐指藻、小球藻、微绿球藻、酵母液、三角褐指藻+小球藻+微绿球藻、三角褐指藻+酵母液、小球藻+酵母液和微绿球藻+酵母液)对卤虫生长、总脂含量及脂肪酸组成的影响,结果表明:不同饵料种类对卤虫生长、总脂含量及脂肪酸组成的影响显著(P<0.05),增长率,以三角褐指藻+酵母液最优;总脂含量、以三角褐指藻最优(19.67%),除酵母液外,与其它饵料相差不显著(P>0.05);脂肪酸组成效果,以微绿球藻组最优(EPA:18.01%,DNA:0.55%,(n-3)HUFA:19.08%),与三角褐指藻组相差不大(P>0.05),显著高于其它各组(P>0.05).同时以三角褐指藻为饵料,研究了卤虫不同生长阶段(体长2、4、6、8、10 mm)总脂含量、脂肪酸组成变化,结果表明:卤虫体长2~10 mm总脂含量为14.27%~20.93%,随体长的增长降低;EPA、DHA及(n-3)HUFA的含量,均随体长的增长降低,EPA含量为:10.47%~20.77%,DNA含量为:0~0.70%,(n-3)HUFA含量为:10.85%~22.01%.结论认为,卤虫以三角褐指藻或三角褐指藻+酵母液为饵料培养营养价值最佳,其体长小于6 mm营养价值较佳. 相似文献

The digestion, absorption and post absorptive metabolism of a radiolabelled triacylglycerol (TAG; triolein) and a free fatty acid (FFA; oleic acid), delivered by tube feeding, was studied in herring Clupea harengus larvae, using metabolic chambers and video analysis. In general, a large amount of the delivered lipid was evacuated. Most of the evacuation occurred between 2 and 6 h after tube feeding although a group of larvae responded by rapidly evacuating the lipid (>50% before 2 h). The volume of the tube‐fed lipid affected its utilization. A small volume of triolein (9·2 nl, representing c . 6% of gut filling capacity) resulted in a lower proportion of fast evacuating larvae and improved utilization (lower evacuation and higher absorption: body incorporation and catabolism) compared with 50·6 nl ( c . 17% of gut filling capacity). Increases in the volume of tube fed triolein enhanced only marginally label absorption and led to a steep rise in evacuation. At a comparable high volume (50·6 nl), oleic acid, which does not require digestion, was better absorbed and less evacuated than triolein. The video observation of the lipid digestive process revealed a considerable gut contractile activity that appeared effective in processing the tube fed lipid. Also, the gut wall seemed very sensitive to physical pressure. Signs of chemical degradation during lipid digestion were also noted. The metabolic studies, together with video image analysis, suggested that the limiting step for the utilization of high dietary lipid levels may have been the lipid absorption into the enterocytes and transport into the body, rather than lipid digestion. The results support the notion that the rate of lipid digestion and absorption in fishes is slower than that of mammals. 相似文献

The lipid composition of two species of Serrasalmid fish with different natural feeding habits were compared in relation to the polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) supplied in their diets. Mylossoma aureum , a herbivorous piranha, was maintained on oatmeal flakes in which : 2(n-6) and : 3(n-3) were the only PUFA and accounted for 40–8 and 1.2%, respectively of dietary fatty acids. Serrasalmus nattereri , the carnivorous red piranha, was fed mosquito larvae containing .0-33.4% of their total fatty acids as : 2(n-6)+18 : 3(n-3) and 4.9-8.5% as 20 : 4(n-6)+20 : 5(n-3). The two species had similar lipid class compositions in liver, brain, viscera and carcass, except that lipids from M. aureum were generally richer in triacylglycerols. In both species, visceral and carcass lipid contained high levels of triacylglycerols whose principal PUFA was : 2(n-6). In M. aureum the major PUFA in liver total lipid and triacylglycerols was : 2(n-6) whilst the major PUFA in liver phospholipids were : 4(n-6) and : 5(n-6), with : 6(n-3) being a minor component. The level of : 6(n-3) in ethanolamine glycerophospholipids was significantly greater in brain than liver of M. aureum. Although absent from dietary lipid, : 6(n-3) was the major PUFA in phosphatidylcholine and ethanolamine glycerophospholipids from both the liver and brain of S, nattereri . In both species, the ratio of (n-6)/(n-3)PUFA was consistently lower in tissue lipids than in dietary lipids. The results are consistent with (i) the herbivorous M. aureum converting dietary C18 PUFA to their C20 and C22 homologues, (ii) the carnivorous S, nattereri forming : 6(n-3) from either 18:3(n-3) or 20: 5(n-3) and (iii) both species selectively desaturating and elongating (n-3) rather than (n-6) PUFA. 相似文献

The PUFAs include many bioactive lipids. The microbial metabolism of C18 PUFAs is known to produce their bioactive isomers, such as conjugated FAs and hydroxy FAs, but there is little information on that of C20 PUFAs. In this study, we aimed to obtain anaerobic bacteria with the ability to produce novel PUFAs from C20 PUFAs. Through the screening of ∼100 strains of anaerobic bacteria, Clostridium bifermentans JCM 1386 was selected as a strain with the ability to saturate PUFAs during anaerobic cultivation. This strain converted arachidonic acid (cis-5,cis-8,cis-11,cis-14-eicosatetraenoic acid) and EPA (cis-5,cis-8,cis-11,cis-14,cis-17-EPA) into cis-5,cis-8,trans-13-eicosatrienoic acid and cis-5,cis-8,trans-13,cis-17-eicosatetraenoic acid, giving yields of 57% and 67% against the added PUFAs, respectively. This is the first report of the isolation of a bacterium transforming C20 PUFAs into corresponding non-methylene-interrupted FAs. We further investigated the substrate specificity of the biohydrogenation by this strain and revealed that it can convert two cis double bonds at the ω6 and ω9 positions in various C18 and C20 PUFAs into a trans double bond at the ω7 position. This study should serve to open up the development of novel potentially bioactive PUFAs. 相似文献

In two experiments, a batch of 38 herring from Shetland was gutted immediately on capture (0 h) and further batches were gutted 14 and 37 h after capture and storage on ice. The numbers of Anisakis larvae in the body-cavity and in the flesh (detected by pepsin-HCl digest) were then counted. The proportion of fish with worms in the flesh was higher at 14 and 37 h than at 0 h. The percentage of the total worm burden in the flesh increased between cash each time interval, which suggests that a large-scale migration of larvae into the flesh occurs in ungutted fish. There was a positive association between the numbers of larvae in the viscera and the numbers in the flesh. Most larvae occurred in the hypaxial muscles. The results are discussed in relation to the observations of earlier workers. 相似文献

The aerobic intestinal microflora of 2-week-old herring (Clupea harengus) larvae was characterized by using conventional microbiological methods and electron microscopy. Larvae were hatched and kept in filtered seawater or in seawater with penicillin and streptomycin. The gastrointestinal tract of herring larvae is essentially a straight tube divided into two compartments. Light microscopy revealed bacteria present in a progressively increasing amount throughout the length of the gastrointestinal tract from esophagus to anus. The posterior region of the intestinal lumen appeared completely occluded with bacteria. The intestinal microflora consisted mainly of members of the genera Pseudomonas and Alteromonas in the larvae incubated in filtered seawater, whereas Flavobacterium spp. dominated in larvae exposed to antibiotics. The intestinal microflora of untreated fish larvae was sensitive to all tested antibiotics, whereas multiple resistance was found in the intestinal microflora of the group given antibiotics. Thus, a dramatic change in the microflora resulted from incubation with antibiotics. Nonpigmented yeasts were detected in both larval groups. Ciliated epithelial cells were observed in the midgut, probably propeling bacteria towards the hindgut, where endocytosis of bacteria has been demonstrated. These findings suggest that transport and sequestering mechanisms resembling those of invertebrates may be found in the gut of fish larvae. Neural and alimentary cholecystokinin (CCK) levels in Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus, were analyzed from hatching to 40days after hatching (DAH). The head compartment representing the neural pool was quantitatively dominant (>80% of the total CCK content) while the digestive tract pool represented 6-10%. During ontogeny the CCK level in whole larvae increased almost 15-fold from 0 to 40 DAH, being particularly marked from 14 to 20 DAH. Larvae of 24 to 26 DAH were examined for potential occurrence of a circadian rhythm and to analyze the effects of feeding. Fed and fasted larvae were significantly different, where fed larvae showed higher CCK levels. There were large fluctuations in CCK levels analyzed at 3h intervals without an apparent diurnal pattern. Shorter sampling intervals of 1h in the morning when lights were switched gradually on and food was offered to the larvae demonstrated a marked drop in the relative gut CCK levels and a concurrent increase in the CCK carcass to gut ratio, 1h after introduction of food followed by a return to prefeeding levels after 2h. This response probably results from a release and re-synthesis of CCK in the gut after initiation of feeding. Taken together, these results support earlier reports that CCK participates in the regulation of digestive processes in herring larvae, but CCK does not seem to have a circadian rhythm independent of feeding. 相似文献
