Synopsis A total of 314 white suckers (Catostomus commersoni) taken monthly during May to December 1975 and in April and May 1976 from southern Lake Huron, Ontario, Canada, were examined forCapillaria catostomi.Prevalence determined from fresh white suckers (66%) was significantly lower than from frozen white suckers (81%). However, there was no significant difference in prevalence ofC. catostomi in samples taken at monthly intervals; in male and female white suckers; or in the age categories.Mean intensity of infection was not significantly different in fresh (9.6 [± 13.41]) or frozen (10.4 [± 13.11]) white suckers. There was no significant difference in intensities between monthly samples in male and female white suckers or in the age categories. Suckers were infected with 1–172 worms. The percentage of male, female and immature worms did not change with sex or age of host or by month. The frequency distribution showed the parasites were overdispersed.A possible life cycle forC. catostomi involving an oligochaete intermediate host is discussed and an attempt made to explain the almost constant levels of prevalence and intensity. 相似文献

Synopsis Reznick and Endler investigated natural variation in life-history traits of populations of Trinidad guppies exposed to one of three intensities of predation: (i) high predation directed primarily at adults, (ii) moderate predation directed primarily at juveniles, and (iii) low predation. They were able to document significant interpopulational differences in life-history traits associated with this differential predation on a trait-by-trait basis. However, the present extended multivariate analysis indicates that (1) life-history traits do not differ significantly between populations exposed to moderate versus low predation, although both differ greatly from high-predation populations; (2) life-history variation is strongly unifactorial; and (3) despite the importance of predation effects, approximately 17% of the variation in life-history variables cannot be accounted for by predation intensity. Residual variation has no obvious geographical patterns, but instead seems to reflect local environmental variability. Life-history differences between predation regimes are consistent with residual patterns of variation within regimes, suggesting that local variation provides the raw material for extrapolation in response to predation, but also that it influences the direction of correlated change in life-history traits. 相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that acuity of behavioral responses to food odor in three commercially important species of marine fish would increase as juvenile length increased. Swimming activity among two size groups of fish was measured in the presence of a series of squid extract dilutions. Increased swimming activity in juvenile Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepis Schmidt, walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma Pallas, and sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria Pallas was stimulated above threshold concentrations of squid extract, expressed as dilution from full strength. Maximum chemosensory acuity was observed in smaller (8-14 cm total length, TL) Pacific halibut and walleye pollock, while larger sablefish (15-23 cm TL) continued to develop acuity. Response thresholds were highest (10− 3 dilution) in Pacific halibut, at intermediate levels (10− 4-10− 6 dilution) in walleye pollock and smaller sablefish and reached the lowest levels (10− 13 dilution) in larger sablefish. The widely held view that dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) are the primary chemosensory stimulants for fish food searching may not be valid for sablefish, as they detected squid extract at dilutions containing DFAA that appeared to be far below ambient sea water DFAA concentrations. 相似文献

A new species, Acaenodera spinosior, is described based on specimens collected from the intestine of Conger orbignyanus Valenciennes (Pisces: Congridae) caught in waters off Mar del Plata (38°08′S, 57°32′W), Argentina. Five of 36 congers examined were parasitized (prevalence: 13.9%, mean intensity: 2.6 ± 1.52, range: 1–5). The new species is distinguished from its only congener, Acaenodera placophora Manter and Pritchard, 1960, a parasite of congers off Hawaii, by its larger size, lacking eyespots, and exhibiting a greater number of circumoral, mid-ventral and lateral spines. This is the first record of Acaenodera Manter and Pritchard, 1960 in Atlantic waters. 相似文献

The study of hybrid courtship songs and the behavioral responses of hybrids and parental individuals to hybrid songs can be useful in understanding the origin of reproductive isolation among species that differ mainly in their courtship songs. Here we test the hypotheses (a) that hybrid lacewings prefer hybrid songs to either of the parental songs from a cross betweenChrysoperla plorabunda andC. johnsoni, and (b) that parental individuals prefer their own song over those of hybrids. Analysis of songs showed that most features of hybrid songs are intermediate between the two parents. Hybrids organize their songs with a series of simple volleys like those ofC. plorabunda. Female hybrids from two reciprocal crosses and females and males of the parental species were presented with choices of hybrid and parental songs. Hybrids responded more to recordings of hybrid songs than to recordings ofC. plorabunda but did not differ in the responses given toC. johnsoni and hybrid songs. In contrast, males and females of both parental lines preferred to duet with recordings of their own song types and did not respond to hybrid songs. Our results demonstrate that hybrids would be at a disadvantage in nature, because neitherC. plorabunda norC. johnsoni will respond to their songs. 相似文献

Mesocoelium lanfrediaesp. nov. (Digenea: Mesocoeliidae) inhabits the small intestine of Rhinella marina (Amphibia: Bufonidae) and is described here, with illustrations provided by light, scanning electron microscopy and molecular approachs. M. lanfrediae sp. nov. presents the typical characteristics of the genus, but is morphometrically and morphologically different from the species described previously. The main diagnostic characteristics of M. lanfrediae sp. nov. are (i) seven pairs of regularly-distributed spherical papillae on the oral sucker, (ii) ventral sucker outlined by four pairs of papillae distributed in a uniform pattern and interspersed with numerous spines, which are larger at the posterior margin and (iii) small, rounded tegumentary papillae around the opening of the oral sucker, which are morphologically different from those of the oral sucker itself, some of which are randomly disposed in the ventrolateral tegumentary region of the anterior third of the body. Addionally, based on SSU rDNA, a phylogenetic analysis including Brachycoeliidae and Mesocoeliidae taxa available on GenBank established the close relationship between M. lanfrediae sp. nov. and Mesocoelium sp. 相似文献

The impact of parasitism on population dynamics and community structure of marine animals is an area of growing interest in marine ecology. The effect of a microphallid trematode, Maritrema novaezelandensis on the survival of its amphipod host, Paracalliope novizealandiae, was investigated by a laboratory study combined with data from field collections. In the laboratory, the effect of infection level on host mortality was investigated. Four groups of individuals were exposed to 0 (control), 5 (low), 25 (moderate) and 125 (high) cercariae, respectively, and their survival was monitored during a 10-day period. The distribution and migration of unencysted cercariae within the host were examined during dissections 6 and 48 h post infection. Parasite-induced mortality under field conditions was investigated by quantifying the relationship between parasite load and host body size. In the laboratory experiment, a highly significant decrease in host survival was observed for amphipods in the moderate and high infection groups relative to that of control amphipods. Parasite-induced mortality was most pronounced in the first two days post infection suggesting that the increased mortality is due to penetration of host cuticula and migration of cercariae within the host. Field data showed a monotonic increase in the mean parasite load with the body size of the amphipods, indicating that M. novaezelandensis does not severely affect P. novizealandiae-populations under normal field conditions. However, a decrease in the variance-to-mean ratio for the largest size-classes indicates that heavily infected individuals are removed from the population as predicted by the experimental infections. The results from the laboratory study in conjunction with our knowledge of the transmission strategy of the parasite emphasize the potential effect of M. novaezelandensis on its amphipod host population during episodes of high temperature causing the rapid and massive release of cercariae from snail intermediate hosts. 相似文献

Members of Poeciliidae are used as model organisms for experimental studies on natural and sexual selection, and comparative studies of life-history evolution. The latter have demonstrated multiple origins of both superfetation and placentotrophy within Poeciliidae. Most recently, placentotrophy has been described in five species of Poecilia (Pamphorichthys), but only one of these (P.hasemani) shows evidence of superfetation. Here, we use a molecular phylogeny based on concatenated nuclear and mitochondrial gene sequences to test hypotheses of correlated evolution between superfetation and placentotrophy in Poecilia. Taxon sampling included all species in the subgenera Micropoecilia and Pamphorichthys for which the presence or absence of placentotrophy and superfetation have been determined, as well as representatives of all other Poecilia subgenera (Acanthophacelus, Limia, Mollienesia, Poecilia, Pseudolimia). Phylogenetic analyses were performed with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods; ancestral states for life-history characters were reconstructed with parsimony and SIMMAP; correlation analyses were performed with SIMMAP; and divergence times were estimated using a relaxed molecular clock. All subgenera in Poecilia were recovered as monophyletic. The basal split in Poecilia is between P. (Acanthophacelus)+P. (Micropoecilia) and the other five subgenera. In the latter clade, P. (Poecilia) is the sister-group to the remaining four subgenera. Within P. (Pamphorichthys), all analyses with the combined data set recovered P. (Pamphorichthys) araguaiensis as the sister taxon to P. (Pamphorichthys) hollandi, and P. (Pamphorichthys) scalpridens as the sister taxon to P. (Pamphorichthys) minor. P. (Pamphorichthys) hasemani was either the sister taxon to P. (Pamphorichthys) hollandi+P. (Pamphorichthys) minor (maximum likelihood, Bayesian) or the sister taxon to all other Pamphorichthys species (maximum parsimony). Ancestral state reconstructions suggest that placentotrophy and superfetation evolved on the same branch in P. (Micropoecilia), whereas placentotrophy evolved before superfetation in P. (Pamphorichthys). SIMMAP analyses indicate a statistically significant association between placentotrophy and superfetation. Within P. (Micropoecilia) both placentotrophy and superfetation evolved in ≤4 million years. Within P. (Pamphorichthys), superfetation evolved in ≤9 million years on the P. (Pamphorichthys) hasemani branch, and placentotrophy evolved in ≤10 million years in the common ancestor of this subgenus. 相似文献

Synopsis Ultrasonic telemetry was used to study the movement and behavior of nine adult muskellunge, 69 to 101 cm in total length. Intensive fish tracking conducted from June to August 1978 produced 1178 contacts, the basis for summer home range determinations. Eight fish established summer home ranges by the time surface water temperatures rose above 17°C in mid-June, and by early July all fish exhibited home range behavior. Individual summer home ranges were 39 to 443 ha (mean = 146 ha) in area as determined by the minimum convex polygon method, and 27 to 73 ha (mean = 63 ha) as estimated by the grid-square method. Six fish had home ranges comprised of two distinct activity centers, 2.0 to 3.5 km apart. Some home ranges spatially overlapped, but occurrences of two fish at a common location were rare. In autumn, six of eight surviving fish remained within or near their summer home ranges. Early ontogeny of Adinia xenica (Pisces,Cyprinodontiformes): 1. The development of embryos in hiding
Synopsis Examination of living and stained preserved embryos of the fundulid Adinia xenica from the intertidal salt marshes of the northern Gulf of Mexico, revealed a saltatory pattern of development. Embryonic structures indicate an ability to tolerate low oxygen conditions, primarily by extensive vascularization of the large yolksac and pericardial headfold, and capillaries covering the entire body. Adhesive fibres of the chorion hold the egg to the chosen substrate, away from anoxic sediments. Prior to hatching most embryos enter a resting interval of up to four weeks, with a mean duration of 8 days (in the laboratory). Growth ceases, development is limited to some skeletal calcification, and metabolic rate, as indicated by bradycardia and yolk resorption, is greatly reduced. This step distributes hatching and recruitment over time in a variety of environmental conditions. Hatching is considered to result from a variable summation of internal and external factors; ease of its induction increases during the resting interval. Upon hatching most embryos are well developed and ready to feed exogenously, there being essentially no free-embryo phase. The considerable individual variation in timing and relative order of some ontogenic events may provide opportunities for environmentally induced heterochronies and thus assist A. xenica to develop in a range of habitats and conditions. Reproductive style includes hiding the eggs in protected locations, and a fractional spawning pattern. Consideration of this plus morphological adaptations, egg size and adhesivity places A. xenica in the reproductive guild of brood-hiding cavity spawners. 相似文献

A survey of Indo-Pacific lutjanids of the subfamily Caesioninae revealed the presence of Siphodera gurukun Machida, 1910 and two new cryptogonimid taxa from off Heron and Lizard Islands on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia and Rasdhoo Atoll, Maldives. A combined morphological and genetic characterisation of these species shows that they form a clade distinct from the type-species of Siphodera Linton, 1910, S. vinaledwardsii (Linton, 1901), and warrants the proposal of a new genus. Here we propose Siphomutabilus n. g. and transfer Siphodera gurukun Machida, 1986 as the type-species, Siphomutabilus gurukun (Machida, 1986) n. comb. Siphodera aegyptensis Hassanine & Gibson, 2005 is transferred to Siphomutabilus as S. aegyptensis (Hassanine & Gibson, 2005) n. comb. based on morphological and ecological similarities. Siphomutabilus raritas n. sp. is described from Caesio cuning (Bloch) off Lizard Island and S. bitesticulatus n. sp. is described from Pterocaesio marri Schultz off Heron Island. The two new species are unique in that they have two testes, making their morphology broadly consistent with that of Metadena Linton, 1910, yet the molecular analyses conducted here indicates that they are unequivocally united with Siphomutabilus gurukun (which has multiple testes) to the exclusion of Metadena lutiani (Yamaguti, 1942), which was sequenced here. The dramatic phenotypic plasticity observed among such closely related species of Siphomutabilus suggests a secondary modification of what is generally considered a robust generic diagnostic character within this and other digenean families, highlighting the need for a combined morphological and molecular diagnostic approach when characterising these taxa. Siphodera Linton, 1910 is amended to include just two species, the type-species S. vinaledwardsii (Linton, 1901) Linton, 1910 and S. cirrhiti Yamaguti, 1970, which are distinguished by their lack of oral spines and multiple testes that are primarily extracaecal. Siphodera ghanensis Fischthal & Thomas, 1968 is considered a species incertae sedis here based on significant morphological and ecological differences compared with species of Siphodera and Siphomutabilus n. g. 相似文献

Behavioral and adrenocortical responses to environmental changes in leopard cats (Felis bengalensis)
Indicators of environmental adequacy relevant to the well-being of small felids are developed by examining, in 4 captive leopard cats, interrelationships between behavioral and adrenocortical responses to changes in housing conditions. Singly housed cats were moved from their barren home cage (Cage 1, baseline) sequentially to 2 new, barren housing situations (Cages 2 and 3; ≈ 10 weeks/cage). Urinary cortisol concentrations, stereotypic pacing, and hiding frequencies were transiently increased for 1 week after translocation to Cage 2. After translocation to Cage 3, cortisol concentrations and hiding also were increased for the first week. However, conditions in Cage 3 were determined to be aversive to the cats, as evidenced by cortisol concentrations that remained chronically elevated for the entire 10-week period. Exploratory behavior was suppressed during this period. When Cage 3 was enriched with a complex of branches and hiding places, urinary cortisol concentrations and stereotypic pacing decreased, and exploration increased. Concealment locations that camouflage were more often used for lying down when urinary cortisol was elevated. These results suggest that reduced exploratory behavior is an indicator of chronic exposure to aversive environmental conditions. Stereotypic pacing may not necessarily increase when adrenocortical activity increases. The results also suggest that enrichment facilitates coping with aversive stimulation by providing behavioral options to confined felids. To promote the welfare of small felids, appropriate camouflaged hiding places should be provided and enrichment programs developed to stimulate exploratory behavior. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

When subjected to molecular study, species of digeneans believed to be cosmopolitan are usually found to consist of complexes of species with narrower distributions. We present molecular and morphological evidence of transcontinental distributions in two species of Apharyngostrigea Ciurea, 1924, based on samples from Africa and the Americas. Sequences of cytochrome c oxidase I and, in some samples, internal transcribed spacer, revealed Apharyngostrigea pipientis (Faust, 1918) in Tanzania (first known African record), Argentina, Brazil, USA and Canada. Sequences from A. pipientis also match previously published sequences identified as Apharyngostrigea cornu (Zeder, 1800) originating in Mexico. Hosts of A. pipientis surveyed include definitive hosts from the Afrotropic, Neotropic and Nearctic, as well as first and second intermediate hosts from the Americas, including the type host and type region. In addition, metacercariae of A. pipientis were obtained from experimentally infected Poecilia reticulata, the first known record of this parasite in a non-amphibian second intermediate host. Variation in cytochrome c oxidase I haplotypes in A. pipientis is consistent with a long established, wide-ranging species with moderate genetic structure among Nearctic, Neotropic and Afrotropic regions. We attribute this to natural dispersal by birds and find no evidence of anthropogenic introductions of exotic host species. Sequences of CO1 and ITS from adult Apharyngostrigea simplex (Johnston, 1904) from Egretta thula in Argentina matched published data from cercariae from Biomphalaria straminea from Brazil and metacercariae from Cnesterodon decemmaculatus in Argentina, consistent with previous morphological and life-cycle studies reporting this parasite—originally described in Australia—in South America. Analyses of the mitochondrial genome and rDNA operon from A. pipientis support prior phylogenies based on shorter markers showing the Strigeidae Railliet, 1919 to be polyphyletic. 相似文献

Laboratory-reared Lymnaea catascopium snails (1–269 days old) were exposed individually to different numbers of Schistosomatium douthitti miracidia. Increasing the exposure dosage from 3 to 10 miracidia generally increased infection rates, in some age classes up to 100%. Successful re-exposure of snails not infected after a primary exposure was possible. Neonatal snails were least likely to become infected, primarily because miracidia were not attracted to them. Snails 12–55 days old were most susceptible to infection. Miracidia were readily attracted to these snails, and many were ingested and subsequently penetrated the host esophageal wall. Miracidial penetration of external snail surfaces was rare. Susceptibility of older snails (65–269 days) progressively declined with age. Many miracidia were entangled and immobilized in mucus produced by these snails, and fewer were ingested. No conspicuous host cellular responses to mother sporocysts were observed in any of the snails sectioned. A comparison of susceptibility of deliberately stunted snails and comparably aged controls of normal size indicated that the former were more susceptible. 相似文献

The zebrafish chemosensory systems of olfaction, taste and solitary chemosensory cells (SCCs) are established during the first week after fertilization (a.f.). These systems presumably support the early development of feeding behaviors required as yolk supplies diminish over the same period. Yet there is no previous data reporting early chemosensory responses in zebrafish. We therefore assayed the chemosensory behavior of newly hatched zebrafish on days 3, 4 and 5 a.f. Responses were compared between fish exposed to water alone versus water containing a mixture of 12 amino acids (100 microM each) flowing through a 50 ml test chamber at 4 ml/min; computer-assisted motion analysis was used to quantify responses. Behavioral responses were first observed at day 4 a.f.; the number of fish swimming, their swimming speeds, and their net-to-gross displacement (NGDR) all increased significantly in response to amino acid stimulation. Because taste buds first appear 4-5 days a.f. and the SCCs may not respond to amino acids, these initial chemosensory responses of day 4 fish may be mediated by already established olfactory neurons. The onset of chemosensitivity in day 4 fish corresponded with an easily recognizable developmental phenotype of inactive floating; day 3 fish were inactive and resting on the bottom while day 5 fish were active and moving through the water column. The ease of identifying responsive day 4 fish suggests these animals may be useful for characterizing odorant sensitivity or developmental plasticity or for screening for chemosensory mutations. 相似文献

We examined the ionoregulatory physiology and biochemistry of the teleost sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna), an inhabitant of salt marshes along the gulf coast, during exposure to hyper-saline waters (salinity range 35-95 ppt). Mollies were able to tightly control plasma Na(+) and Cl(-) concentrations and tissue water levels up to 65 ppt, but at higher salinities plasma ion levels began to rise and muscle water content dropped. Still, even at the highest salinity (90 ppt) plasma Na(+) and Cl(-) levels were only 32% and 39%, respectively, above levels at 35 ppt. Drinking rates at 60 ppt climbed 35%, while gut Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase (NAK) activity rose 70% and branchial NAK activity jumped 200%. The relatively small rise in drinking rate, in the face of a more than doubling of the osmotic gradient, suggests that a reduction in branchial water permeability significantly limited water loss and associated salt load. At 80 ppt, a salinity where plasma ion levels just begin to rise, drinking rate rose more rapidly, but gut and gill NAK activity did not, suggesting that mollies employed other pathways (perhaps renal) of salt excretion. At higher salinities, plasma ion levels continued to rise and muscle water content fell slightly indicating the beginnings of internal osmotic disturbances. To evaluate the energetic costs of hyper-salinity on mollies we measured the rate of O(2) consumption and found it rose with salinity, in sharp contrast to virtually all species previously examined. Synopsis Larval development commences with first exogenous feeding, and ends with final remodelling of caenogenetic structures into the definitive organs of juvenile and adult. For the intertidal cyprinodontid Adinia xenica this generally corresponds to the interval between hatching and completion of scalation. The final step of the embryo period is a resting interval of variable duration. Embryos were induced to hatch after 2 and 10 days of this near arrest. Although the general pattern of larval development was the same for both groups, differences were observed in the rates and order of calcification of skeletal elements, fin differentiation and growth, and scalation. For example, embryos hatching 8 days later in the resting interval were already pattially calcified, but completed calcification at a slower rate than the group hatching after 2 days. These differences may be due to effects of the duration of the resting interval itself; or they may reflect genetic variation of which age at hatching is only one manifestation. 相似文献

Diaeretiella rapae (M'Intosh) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) parasitizes many aphid species, including cabbage aphids on cruciferous crops and Russian wheat aphids on cereal crops. We investigated the olfactory perception of D. rapae to semiochemicals that may be encountered in these two environments while searching for hosts or for mates. We conducted electroantennogram and flight-tunnel experiments on male and female D. rapae and found marked differences between sexes. Cruciferous volatiles elicited physiological and behavioral responses by females but not by males. Males and females responded similarly to (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol, a component of green-leaf volatiles, in both electroantennogram and flight-tunnel assays. Female wasps responded similarly regardless of prior oviposition experience or population origin. Likewise, mating history and aphid presence did not increase responsiveness toward these semiochemicals. 相似文献

Stictodora lari Yamaguti, 1939 (Digenea: Heterophyidae) was originally reported as an avian intestinal parasite and is here reported in humans. The patients were adults, aged 46-69 (2 men and 4 women), who resided in coastal villages in Sachon-gun, Kyongsangnam-do, or Shinan-gun, Chollanam-do. in the Republic of Korea. The worms were recovered after praziquantel treatment and purgation with magnesium salts. A total of 15 S. lari specimens (1-10 per individual) was collected, together with 5 other species of intestinal flukes. The flukes were morphologically characterized by a small body size (0.70-0.86 mm long and 0.27-0.36 mm wide), a ventrogenital sac, and a gonotyl armed with 70-80 spines in the form of a comma or reversed comma lying along their lateral margin. The patients had eaten the raw flesh of mullets and gobies that had been caught in an estuary near their villages.
