Fecundity of four species of catfishes, namely, Mystus seenghala (Sykes), Mystus cavasius (Ham), Wallagonia attu (Bloch) and Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch), was studied. The fecundity of Mystus seenghala and Mystus cavasius varied between 20064 to 46443 and 3314 to 63135 respectively. In Wallagonia attu and Heteropneustes fossilis it varied between 66070 to 453148 and 1375 to 46737 respectively. In all the four species fecundity has a linear relationship with body weight and gonad weight, and a parabolic relationship with length in all the fishes excepting Mystus seenghala, where it is linear. By subjecting the data to multiple regression analysis, it is observed that the fecundity of each species can be most accurately determined by taking two variables together. In all the fishes studied the relative fecundity (Egg/body wt.) does not change significantly either with length or body weight.  相似文献

The effects of carbyl and 1-naphthol on hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing enzyme systems were investigated. The agents were fed at a level of 25 mmol/kg of feed to groups of young male Swiss-Webster mice for 14-day periods. Body weight was depressed by carbaryl, but not by 1-naphthol. The rates of in vitro metabolism of aniline and benzphetamine were greater than control rates in livers of mice fed carbaryl, but the rate of in vivo hydrolysis of the carbamate insecticide Zectran was decreased by carbaryl feeding. Administration of 1-naphthol did not change the rates of in vitro metabolism of either aniline or benzphetamine. Hepatic microsomal concentrations of cytochromes P-450 and b5 were increased by carbaryl, but feeding of 1-naphthol did not affect levels of either cytochrome. Radiolabeled pentobarbital disappeared from the blood of carbaryl-fed mice more rapidly than from the blood of control animals, and carbaryl-fed mice slept a shorter period of time than controls following pentobarbital administration. The LD50 of an acute oral dose of carbaryl was increased two-fold by feeding carbaryl for 14 days. It was concluded that carbaryl is a weak inducer of hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing activity, and that the effects observed are not likely due to 1-naphthol.  相似文献

A bacterium capable of utilizing carbaryl as sole source of carbon was isolated from garden soil and identified as a Micrococcus species. The organism also utilized carbofuran, naphthalene, 1-naphthol, and several other aromatic compounds as growth substrates. The organism degraded carbaryl by hydrolysis to yield 1-naphthol and methylamine. 1-Naphthol was further metabolized via salicylate by a gentisate pathway, as evidenced by oxygen uptake and enzymatic studies. Abstract Three bacterial isolates which appeared to use the insecticide, carbaryl (1-naphthyl, N -methyl-carbamate) as their sole carbon and nitrogen sources were originally selected from garden soil. Only one isolate, Pseudomonas sp. (NCIB 12043) could metabolise carbaryl rapidly to 1-naphthol and methylamine. The other two isolates, Pseudomonas sp. (NCIB 12042) and Rhodococcus sp. (NCIB 12038) relied on slow chemical hydrolysis of carbaryl to 1-naphthol and methylamine. All three isolates used 1-naphthol as their sole carbon source; however, their ability to use naphthalene and a range of mono- and dihydroxy-substituted naphthalene compounds varied. NCIB 12038 and NCIB 12043 showed little or no growth on naphthalene, 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene or 1,3-dihydroxynaphthalene as sole carbon sources and their 1-naphthol oxygenases had little activity with these substrates. In contrast, NCIB 12042 could use these compounds as sole carbon sources and its 1-naphthol oxygenase also showed activity with them. We conclude that 1-naphthol oxygenase from NCIB 12042 is a relatively non-specific dioxygenase, whereas the 1-naphthol oxygenases from NCIB 12038 and NCIB 12043 are relatively specific monooxygenases requiring hydroxylated naphthalene compounds as substrates.  相似文献

The major hydrolysis product of the pesticide carbaryl, 1-naphthol, enhanced the replication of goldfish virus type 2 in piscine cell culture at concentrations below any detectable cytotoxicity. Enhancement indices of 2.3, 3.7, and 7.1 were observed at 1, 5, and 10 ppm (μl/liter), respectively. Replication at 0.5 ppm was equivalent to that of controls.  相似文献

Toxicity of four insecticides commonly used in rice pest management, chlorpyrifos, dimethoate, carbaryl and carbosulfan, to the fry of common carp was assessed through median lethal concentrations (LC50) and in vivo inhibition of the brain acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme at sublethal concentrations. The 96‐h LC50 values for these four insecticides were determined to be 0.008, 26.11, 7.85 and 0.60 mg L?1 respectively. Exposure of fish to a series of sublethal concentrations (0.5–5% LC50) of each insecticide for 14 days resulted in concentration‐dependent inhibition in AChE activity in comparison with the controls. AChE activity was greatly inhibited in the fish exposed to sublethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos. Upon transfer to insecticide‐free water, AChE activities in fry exposed to 0.5 and 1% LC50 concentrations of carbaryl and carbosulfan were restored to the control level within 7–21 days whereas the fish exposed to chlorpyrifos or dimethoate did not fully recover from the insecticide‐induced anticholinesterase action. Of the four insecticides tested, chlorpyrifos was the most toxic for the fry of common carp. Although dimethoate was least toxic for the fish under acute exposure, the restoration level of normal AChE activity was slower under chronic exposure in comparison with carbaryl and carbosulfan. Hence, the use of carbamates, especially carbaryl, to control insect pests of rice in rice‐cum‐carp culture systems is recommended when considering survival, restoration of the normal AChE activity and stamina of the cultured fish.  相似文献

The effects of individual chemical fertilizers (urea, superphosphate and potash) on the toxicity of two carbamate insecticides (carbaryl and carbofuran) to the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC 7120, were studied in vitro at partial lethal levels of each insecticide. Urea at 10 and 50 ppm levels reduced the toxicity due to carbaryl at 50 ppm partial lethal dose and due to carbofuran at 100 and 250 ppm partial lethal doses. Urea at 100 ppm enchanced the toxicity of both insecticides. Superphosphate at 10 ppm reduced the toxicity of carbaryl at 50 ppm and carbofuran at 100 and 250 ppm, but it enhanced the toxicity due to both insecticides at 50 ppm superphosphate. The toxicity due to carbaryl at 40 and 60 ppm were reduced by 100 and 200 ppm potash, but higher potash levels caused enhancement of toxicity. Carbofuran toxicity at 100 ppm was reduced but at 250 ppm the toxicity was enhanced with 100 ppm potash. Urea, superphosphate and potash caused no significant change in number of vegetative cells between the successive heterocysts at 10 and 50 ppm of urea and superphosphate, respectively, and 100 ppm of potash.  相似文献

Toxicity studies of two commercial carbamate insecticides, carbaryl and carbofuran with the nitrogen-fixing filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC 7120, are described. Under nitrogen-fixing conditions and with calcium nitrate supplementation, 100 and 120 ppm carbaryl were the respective lethal concentrations (LC100), while 20 to 80 ppm (nitrogen-fixing conditions) and 20 to 100 ppm (with nitrate supplementation) were the partial lethal doses (相似文献

Pseudomonas sp. strains C4, C5, and C6 utilize carbaryl as the sole source of carbon and energy. Identification of 1-naphthol, salicylate, and gentisate in the spent media; whole-cell O2 uptake on 1-naphthol, 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene, salicylaldehyde, salicylate, and gentisate; and detection of key enzymes, viz, carbaryl hydrolase, 1-naphthol hydroxylase, 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene dioxygenase, and gentisate dioxygenase, in the cell extract suggest that carbaryl is metabolized via 1-naphthol, 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene, and gentisate. Here, we demonstrate 1-naphthol hydroxylase and 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene dioxygenase activities in the cell extracts of carbaryl-grown cells. 1-Naphthol hydroxylase is present in the membrane-free cytosolic fraction, requires NAD(P)H and flavin adenine dinucleotide, and has optimum activity in the pH range 7.5 to 8.0. Carbaryl-degrading enzymes are inducible, and maximum induction was observed with carbaryl. Based on these results, the proposed metabolic pathway is carbaryl → 1-naphthol → 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene → salicylaldehyde → salicylate → gentisate → maleylpyruvate.  相似文献

The development of neuromasts was studied in two species of teleosts, Cirrhina mrigala Ham. Buch. and Ophicephalus punctatus Bloch, and the findings are presented and discussed. It has been discovered, in the course of this investigation, that a neuromast arises by a process of invagination — a fact hitherto not reported. The occurrence of the dorsal lateral line and the accessory lateral line of the trunk, in addition to the main lateral line, has also been reported for the first time for teleosts, although known for other bony fishes.  相似文献

Phagocytic activity of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) and blood cholinesterase activity were determined in male rats after veinous administrations of carbaryl and 1-naphthol, a carbaryl metabolite. The various parameters were measured 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours after administration of the following four doses per 100 g body weight : 1.875, 3.75, 7.5 and 15 mumol. 1. Results showed an inhibition of the RES phagocytic activity (clearance of colloidal carbon) after carbaryl administration; although 1.875 mumol/100 g had no effect, the other doses inhibited RES activity, blockade time being a function of the dose given. The phagocytic function had returned to normal 72 hr after carbaryl administration. 2. Reductions in spleen weight and protein content were observed together with the RES blockade. 3. At all four doses, the anticholinesterase effect was already apparent one hour after carbaryl administration. 4. 1-naphthol, one of carbaryl's chief metabolites, had no effect either on the RES or on the different parameters studied. These results show a relationship between the phagocytic inhibition of the reticuloendothelial system and the anticholinesterasic effect by carbaryl. They suggest an inhibition of some esterases of macrophages interfering with the phagocytosis.  相似文献

Food intake, growth, conversion efficiency and body composition of the non-air breathing catfish Mystus vittatus (Bloch) were studied in relation to different feeding levels. Fish weighing 817.9 ± 104.00 mg was found to consume a maximum of 156.0 mg live Tubifex worm/g day-1. Geometrically derived feeding rates of 6.75, 23.00 and 26.00 mg dry food/g live fish day-1 represent the maintenance, optimum and maximum levels respectively. The SDA increased from 6.75 mg/g day-1 at maintenance to 13.50 mg/g day-1 at maximum feeding rate. Starvation brougt about increase in body water content, while there was concomitant decrease in fat and crude protein.  相似文献

The cladoceran Daphnia ambigua was exposed to both the insecticide carbaryl and the kairomone released from the predator Chaoborus simultaneously, and its morphological changes were analyzed. Daphnia developed helmets in response to the kairomone, but not in response to carbaryl at low (sublethal) concentrations (1–3 µg 1–1). However, the carbaryl enhanced the development of high helmets and prolonged the maintenance period of the helmets over instars in the presence of the kairomone. These results suggest that sublethal concentrations of the insecticide alter predator-prey interactions by inducing helmet formation in Daphnia, which may reduce vulnerability of the Daphnia to predation.  相似文献

Pseudomonas sp. strains C4, C5 and C6 degrade carbaryl (1-naphthyl N-methylcarbamate) via 1-naphthol, 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene, salicylate and gentisate. Carbon source-dependent metabolic studies suggest that enzymes responsible for carbaryl degradation are probably organized into ‘upper’ (carbaryl to salicylate), ‘middle’ (salicylate to gentisate) and ‘lower’ (gentisate to TCA cycle) pathway. Carbaryl and 1-naphthol were found to induce all carbaryl pathway enzymes, while salicylate and gentisate induce middle and lower pathway enzymes. The strains were found to harbor plasmid(s), and carbaryl degradation property was found to be stable. Genes encoding enzymes of the degradative pathway such as 1-naphthol 2-hydroxylase, salicylaldehyde dehydrogenase, salicylate 5-hydroxylase and gentisate 1,2-dioxygenase were amplified from chromosomal DNA of these strains. The gene-specific PCR products were sequenced from strain C6, and phylogenetic tree was constructed. Southern hybridization and PCR analysis using gel eluted DNA as template supported the presence of pathway genes onto the chromosome and not on the plasmid(s).  相似文献

Habrobracon hebetor Say is one of the most important ectoparasitoids of the larval stage of many invasive agricultural pests such as noctuid and pyralid moths. Lethal and sublethal effects of carbaryl and abamectin were assessed on the ectoparasitoid H. hebetor in laboratory conditions. Dose–response bioassays were carried out on immature and adult stages by using dipping and contact residue methods, respectively. LC50 (lethal concentration for 50%) values of carbaryl and abamectin were 31.19 and 4.16 mg a.i. l−1 on larval stage and 12.6 and 4.42 mg a.i. l−1 on adults, respectively. In order to assess the sublethal effects, adult wasps were exposed to an LC30 of each insecticide and then the demographic parameters of live wasps were studied. The results showed that the intrinsic rate of increase (r m ), finite rate of increase (λ), net reproductive rate (R0) and gross reproductive rate (GRR) were significantly affected by the insecticides. The highest and the lowest r m values were 0.23 and 0.17 in control and carbaryl-treated insects, respectively. The sex ratio of H. hebetor offspring was not significantly affected by either insecticide. The results showed that carbaryl had more adverse effects on population parameters of the parasitoid compared to abamectin. Field studies are needed to determine the total effects of the pesticides on H. hebetor.  相似文献

1. The combined effect of the insecticide carbaryl and the predator (Leptodora kindtii) kairomone was assessed on the development of protuberant morphology in the small cladoceran Bosmina fatalis, a feature which evolved originally as a response to the kairomone. The experiment showed that Bosmina changed its morphology in response to the kairomone, but development was inhibited by carbaryl at a sub‐lethal concentration even in the presence of the kairomone. At the same time, reduction of fecundity was observed in animals exposed to carbaryl. 2. A short‐term feeding experiment (B. fatalis versus Leptodora) indicated that such low concentrations of the insecticide had no impact on predation by Leptodora. Thus, it is suggested that the inhibition of development of anti‐predatory defences in Bosmina can increase its vulnerability to predation. 3. Such disturbance of chemical communication by the insecticide reduces the individual survival rate of prey Bosmina in the environment with high predator density. On the other hand, reduction of fecundity may result in decreased population growth rate of animals. 4. The impact of the insecticide on the anti‐predator morphology in Bosmina (inhibition) was opposite to that in Daphnia (enhancement). This suggests that biochemical induction processes in the development of anti‐predatory morphology are evolutionally different between Daphnia and Bosmina.  相似文献

In Lymnea stagnalis (F1 generation) carbaryl induces a decrease of fecundity for a given age, correlated with the concentration; this decrease is due to a delay in growth. With ppm of lindane a diminution of fecundity is observed which is more prominent with 2 ppm. The number of egg capsules and the number of eggs per capsule are decreased. In F1 intoxicated snails, the degree of the intoxication of their parents seems to play an important part. When the intoxication is stopped, the reversible character is demonstrated. All these chronic intoxication experiments show that lindane is more injurious than carbaryl for the freshwater snails studied.  相似文献

Carbaryl is currently one of the most commonly used insecticides for the control of the pineapple fruit borer, Strymon megarus (Godart), in commercial pineapple production. To evaluate more sustainable biological alternatives to conventional insecticides, three microbial and one botanical insecticide were studied. Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) and a plant extract from Quassia amara were compared with carbaryl in replicated field trials in Costa Rica during 2005 and 2006. In both years of testing, the untreated control received over 50% fruit damage from S. megarus. Bt and carbaryl provided the highest level of control and the lowest level of fruit damage compared to all other treatments. Based on the results of this study, Bt appears to be an acceptable biological alternative to the conventional insecticide (carbaryl) for control of S. megarus on pineapple. In addition, Bt was the least expensive treatment used in this study.  相似文献
