Individual adult females of the cyclopoid copepod Oithona plumiferawere continuously observed for up to 60 min to evaluate theirmotion and feeding behaviour. These females move only aboutfive times per minute, each time with a brief relocation jump.They sink rather slowly while mainly in a horizontal position,which enhances the probability of encountering suitable foodparticles. They perceive food particles hydrodynamically viathe setae on their first antennae, their prosome appendagesand their abdomen. They appear to be able to obtain sufficientfood even at tropical open ocean food abundances. A comparisonwith the calanoid Clausocalanus furcatus reveals notable differencesin behaviour between these two species, which dominate the copepodassemblages in oligotrophic environments.  相似文献

2000年7月至2001年7月的周年调查结果表明,粤东柘林湾浮游桡足类29属57种,其中,强额拟哲水蚤Paracalanus crassirostris和短角长腹剑水蚤Oithona brevicornis为优势种,合计占浮游桡足类总个体数的66.7%.柘林湾是一个浮游桡足类相对丰富的海湾,年均总个体数达5.4×103ind.·m-3.浮游桡足类的种类数和总个体数均表现为湾外大于湾内的平面分布格局,周年变化基本上为单峰型,高峰期位于5~10月,最低谷位于冬季1月。  相似文献

Planktonic copepods display a large repertoire of motion behaviors in a three-dimensional environment. Two-dimensional video observations demonstrated that the small copepod Clausocalanus furcatus, one the most widely distributed calanoids at low to medium latitudes, presented a unique swimming behavior that was continuous and fast and followed notably convoluted trajectories. Furthermore, previous observations indicated that the motion of C. furcatus resembled a random process. We characterized the swimming behavior of this species in three-dimensional space using a video system equipped with telecentric lenses, which allow tracking of zooplankton without the distortion errors inherent in common lenses. Our observations revealed unexpected regularities in the behavior of C. furcatus that appear primarily in the horizontal plane and could not have been identified in previous observations based on lateral views. Our results indicate that the swimming behavior of C. furcatus is based on a limited repertoire of basic kinematic modules but exhibits greater plasticity than previously thought.  相似文献

We analyse the influence of the Kuroshio Current on copepod assemblages in the northern South China Sea. The assumption was tested whether predominant current regimes bring marine zooplankton and Copepoda from subtropical and tropical waters to the south of Taiwan. A total of 101 copepod species were identified from 26 families and 48 genera that include Calanoida, Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida and Poecilostomatoida. High copepod abundances in the study area are shown to be caused by both, a year-round Kuroshio Current intrusion and the SW monsoon, prevailing in the South China Sea during summer. Calanus sinicus did not appear in the samples, indicating that there was no cold water mass intrusion in the area during sampling. Both, the intrusion of the Kuroshio Branch Current to the Luzon Strait and the South China Sea circulation may play a more important role in shaping copepod assemblages in the region than hitherto expected. The abundance of copepods was higher above the 50 m isoline than at deeper strata. Species number and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index were higher with increasing depth. Copepod assemblage structure changed with different sampling depth and different sampling areas. Copepod abundance and species richness were higher in the northern South China Sea than in the Kuroshio Current area, and higher at lower latitudes than at higher latitudes. Some indicator species are characteristic for the Kuroshio Current and indicate with others that the study area accomodated water masses from the northern South China Sea as well as from the Kuroshio Current.  相似文献

海南岛西北沿岸海域浮游桡足类的分布及群落特征   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
为了解昌江沿岸海域生态系统的现状, 探讨海域环境因素对浮游动物的生存环境造成的影响。本文根据2008年11月至2009年7月在海南西部昌江沿岸水域21个测站、4个季度月调查所获的浮游桡足类样品数据, 对该海域浮游桡足类群落结构、分布、季节变化及影响因素进行了分析。本调查共鉴定出桡足类44种, 隶属4目17科24属, 其中秋季25种, 冬季23种, 春季22种, 夏季23种。本次调查共发现优势种6种, 分别是微刺哲水蚤(Canthocalanus pauper)、亚强次真哲水蚤(Subeucalanus subcrassus)、锥形宽水蚤(Temora turbinata)、刺尾纺锤水蚤(Acartia spinicauda)、椭形长足水蚤(Calanopia elliptica)和精致真刺水蚤(Euchaeta concinna), 优势种以近岸暖水种居多。浮游桡足类丰度季节变化明显: 冬季最高, 达409 ind./m3; 秋季次之, 为144 ind./m3, 春季为55 ind./m3, 夏季最低仅为17 ind./m3。其丰度的平面分布显示: 秋、冬季节分别在海区中部和南部形成明显密集区, 春、夏季节则大致呈现由外海向近岸逐渐递减的趋势。浮游桡足类的多样性指数(H')表现为夏季>春季>秋季>冬季, 春、夏季的均匀度指数(J')明显高于秋、冬季。本调查反映出该海区的桡足类群落具有热带—亚热带区系特征, 种类组成季节更替明显, 桡足类种群受海域水温和硅藻的影响明显, 受盐度影响不明显。  相似文献

A microcosm experiment was used to examine the effects of co-contamination with environmentally realistic but relatively low concentrations (expected to cause occasional to frequent adverse effects) of diesel fuel and metals (Cu, Cd, Hg, Cr, and Pb) on a saltmarsh benthic invertebrate community. After 30 days, exposure to metals did not influence abundances of major meiofaunal taxa (nematodes, ostracods, total copepods, nauplii, or chironomid larvae) or individual copepod species. Diesel exposure did not influence nematode or total copepod abundances, but significantly decreased abundances of ostracods, nauplii, and chironomids. For all taxa except copepods, the metals+diesel treatment yielded results similar to the effects of diesel alone. Although total copepod abundances were not significantly influenced by metals- or diesel-only treatments, abundances were significantly reduced in the metals+diesel treatment, a response that appeared consistent with a non-additive toxicological synergism between metals and diesel. Responses of copepod species to the diesel-only treatment were varied; species could be categorized as ‘diesel-sensitive’ (declined in abundance, presumably due to direct (toxic) effects), or ‘diesel-resistant’ (abundance either unchanged, or increased due to indirect (ecological) effects). In the metals+diesel treatment, the effects on ‘diesel-sensitive’ species were similar to those observed in the diesel-only treatment. However, abundances of ‘diesel-resistant’ species declined in the metals+diesel treatment, suggesting that metals interfere with the indirect effects that lead to enhanced abundances of some species and/or that metal+diesel combinations are uniquely toxic. Collectively, however, responses of most individual copepod species to metals+diesel suggested an additive toxicological action, and thus differed from the apparent synergism observed for total copepod abundance. The presence of diesel enhanced the retention of metals in sediments, which may have important toxicological implications. We conclude that, at relatively low concentrations of metal and diesel fuel co-contamination, both direct (toxic) and indirect effects influence faunal abundance; thus, reductions in abundance of major taxa may give the appearance of toxicological synergisms that are not manifested at the species level.  相似文献

The infection by Opecoeloides furcatus and Poracanthium furcatum (Opecoeliidae) was studied in 121 Mullus barbatus and 113 M. surmuletus collected from the Spanish south-eastern Mediterranean. The prevalence of infection was most frequent in M. surmuletus with values of 81.42% for O. furcatus and 38.05% for P. furcatum. In M. barbatus the prevalences of O. furcatus and P. furcatum were 54.54% and 14.88% respectively. Statistically significant differences were found between the infection of the two hosts with P. furcatum. No significant differences in worm burdens could be attributable to host size or to seasonal changes, although a lower infection of M. barbatus by O. furcatus occurred in the autumn. Furthermore, the electrophoretic mobility of the enzyme malic dehydrogenase (MDH) was also studied and both digeneans presented different patterns, corresponding in both cases to homozygotic genotypes.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of subtropical epiplanktonic copepods   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The goal of our project is to increase our knowledge about theco-existence of the numerous small copepod species in the subtropicaland tropical open oceans by combining experimental and fieldstudies. In this paper we present the vertical distributionof the copepod assemblages collected in the upper 100 m of thewater column during a diel cycle at an oceanic site off Bermudain summer 2000. Our quantitative analysis ranged from the grossfeatures of the community to order, genus, species and sex,ending with the population structure for one representativecalanoid (Mecynocera clausii). Total abundance of copepods sampledwith both 63 and 200 µm meshes increased from near thesurface to 100 m depth. Of the four orders, the Calanoida andCyclopoida increased slightly with depth, whereas the Poecilostomatoidahardly occurred in the upper 30 m and then increased by morethan one order of magnitude towards 100 m depth. Harpacticoidashowed even abundance through the vertical column during thenight. Some abundant genera/species displayed hardly any orsmall differences in abundance over the upper 100 m (e.g. Calocalanus,Oithona); that distribution also showed that genera with entirelydifferent motion and feeding behaviour can occupy the same verticalenvironment. A second group appeared to avoid the upper mixedlayer and upper thermocline almost completely (e.g. Oncaea,Mecynocera clausii, Clausocalanus pergens, Eucalanus hyalinus,Haloptilus longicornis). A third limited group seemed to preferthe upper mixed layer (e.g. Clausocalanus furcatus). Some generawere characterized by a paucity of males whereas others hadas many males as females. Our results showed that quantifyingthe distribution and abundance of genera, species and theircopepodid stages seems to be the preferable approach, leadingtowards an understanding of the functioning of the epipelagialcopepod community. We hypothesize that a combination of variables,including feeding behaviour, temperature preference and alsopredation, could determine the ranges of vertical distribution,which would be flexible because of the effect of each of thevariables. It is reasoned that predation was of minor impactin these oligotrophic waters because of the very low abundanceof carnivorous species.  相似文献

The calanoid copepod Clausocalanus furcatus is widely distributedin tropical and subtropical oceans, yet knowledge of its reproductionand development remains limited. We estimated egg productionrates and stage-specific development times from laboratory incubationsand field samples collected at a petroleum platform in the northernGulf of Mexico. Egg production experiments were performed in2002 and 2003 at a laboratory on the platform using freshlycollected female copepods. Median stage development durationswere also measured during the incubations. Logistic regressionmodels were used to estimate median stage durations. The mediandevelopment times of Clausocalanus furcatus from hatching toadulthood ranged from 13 to 20 days. Field samples were collectedfrom waters beneath the platform at 12-h intervals using a 30-LNiskin water bottle during March–April and May–June2003, and the Edmonson egg ratio method was used to estimatethe mean in situ egg production rate. This field-derived meanegg production rate was significantly lower than the 12.08 eggsfemale–1 day–1 measured from incubation experiments,and this difference may reflect high in situ egg mortality.In situ egg production rates also showed high variability andwere almost five times higher during March–April comparedto May–June.  相似文献

The population size of the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, was monitored annually in the summers of 1991–1997 by examining six species of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) caught by surface long-lines in oceanic offshore waters of the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. The annual copepod population size on all salmonids caught was estimated by combining the calculated number of copepods carrying on each salmonid species. The copepod population fluctuated markedly from year to year, which resulted largely from marked annual changes in abundance of pink salmon (O. gorbuscha). Since pink salmon were most frequently and heavily infected and since their abundance changed every year, the copepod population was high in the years when this salmonid species was abundant, but low when it was rare. On the contrary, chum salmon (O. keta) did not show high prevalence and intensity of infection, but the annual abundance of this host species was consistently high, i.e. chum salmon carried many copepods every year. Copepods on other salmonid species (sockeye salmon O. nerka, coho salmon O. kisutch, chinook salmon O. tshawytscha, and steelhead trout O. mykiss) constantly formed a small percentage of the total copepod population. Both chum and pink salmon are the most important hosts in terms of their substantial contribution to support the copepod population, but the importance as hosts of each species is definitely different between the species. Chum salmon is a stable important host supporting the copepod population at a relatively high level every year, while the number of copepods on pink salmon annually exhibits marked fluctuations, and this salmonid species is regarded as an unstable important host.  相似文献

The estuarine copepod Acartia tonsa naturally carried diverse strains of bacteria on its body. The bacterial community composition (BCC) remained very conservative even when the copepod was fed different axenic algal species, indicating that the food per se did not much affect BCC associated with the copepod. In xenic algal treatments, however, copepod-associated BCC differed with each alga fed, even though the same bacterial source was used to inoculate the algae. In addition, starved copepods taken at the same location but at different times significantly differed in their BCC. Algal species composition and copepod life history therefore serve to regulate BCC associated with copepods, and spatial and temporal variations in algal species composition and copepod origin would alter bacteria–copepod interactions.  相似文献

Copepods are considered to be the main component of the Arctic marine zooplankton. We examined the copepod distribution and diversity off Franz Josef Land (northern Barents Sea) in August 2006 and 2007. A total of 18 and 14 copepod taxa were identified from the sampling layers (100–0 m or bottom–0 m) in 2006 and in 2007, respectively. There were no significant differences in the total copepod abundance between the years (means ± SE: 118,503 ± 24,115 individuals m−2 in 2006 vs. 113,932 ± 28,564 individuals m−2 in 2007). However, the copepod biomass in 2006 (4,518 ± 1,091 mg C m−2) exceeded clearly the value in 2007 (1,253 ± 217 mg C m−2). The copepod community showed low species richness and diversity in both years (Simpson index D: 0.34 and 0.38, respectively). Biomass of the large and small copepod species strongly decreased from 2006 to 2007. The total abundance of copepods was negatively correlated with water temperature in 2006 and positively correlated with salinity in 2007. The patchiness in copepod distribution was associated with local hydrography and temperature conditions.  相似文献

Longitudinal changes in composition, abundance, and distribution of copepods were studied at the transition zone of Paranapanema River-Jurumirim Reservoir (SP, Brazil). The interchange of biotic material between marginal lakes and the river system was also examined. Water samples were obtained from 6 stations along a stretch of 13 km of the Paranapanema River, from an upstream reach with high water velocity up to the river mouth into Jurumirim Reservoir. Two other sites in lateral lakes were also sampled. Nine copepod taxa were identified: 3 calanoids (Argyrodiaptomus furcatus Sars, Notodiaptomus iheringi Wright, and N. conifer Sars) and 6 cyclopoids (Eucyclops Claus, Microcyclops Claus, Mesocyclops longisetus Thiébaud, Thermocyclops decipiens Fischer, T. minutus Lowndes, and Paracyclops Claus). Harpacticoids were also collected. Calanoid and cyclopoid nauplii and copepodids, and harpacticoids were the most abundant organisms. In general, there was a longitudinal decrease in copepod abundance, whereas an increase was detected near the lakes. The abundance of most copepods was inversely correlated with current velocity and suspended solids. Higher abundance was observed in the river main course during the rainy season, during which there is a higher connectivity between the lakes and the main river. This promotes exportation of biologic material from marginal lakes to the river system, a biotic exchange reflecting the importance of marginal lakes to the river community structure.  相似文献

This study investigated copepod assemblages in the regime around Turtle Island off northern Taiwan to trace South China Sea water (SCSW) flowing northward with the Kuroshio Current. Seasonal variations of copepod assemblages demonstrated a dynamic succession of changes in copepod populations; the average abundance for total copepods ranged from 102.58 ± 53.38 in December to 1669.89 ± 1866.17 in March (individuals m?3). A total of 87 copepod species representing 36 genera and 21 families were identified. Among all samples, Temora turbinata dominated the copepods by a relative abundance (RA) of 26.89 %, followed by Paracalanus parvus (RA: 22.34 %) and Corycaeus (Ditrichocorycaeus) affinis (RA: 12.77 %). Only the Acrocalanus gracilis species was recorded in all samples. Results of one-way ANOVA revealed that the number of copepod species, indices of richness, evenness, and Shannon–Wiener diversity differed significantly in five different cruises. The density of five copepod species (Gaetanus minor, Calanus sinicus, Eucalanus elongates, Rhincalanus nasutus, and Rhincalanus rostrifrons) exhibited a significant negative correlation with seawater temperature. In contrast, the density of Canthocalanus pauper and Undinula vulgaris was significantly positively correlated with seawater temperature. The cold-water indicator species, C. sinicus, recorded in samples of March and May indicated the effect of China Coast Water (CCW) on copepod communities in the study area. Furthermore, the presence of Calanoides philippinensis in May samples strongly indicated that the SCSW may reach the Turtle Island area. Consequently, C. philippinensis and C. sinicus can be used to trace SCSW and CCW, respectively, in the study area.  相似文献

Even though calanoid copepods produce diapausing eggs that stay alive in lake sediments, these eggs have rarely been used paleolimnologically, as they lack diagnostic morphological features. In this study, we developed a method to identify copepod diapausing eggs in Japan as a clue toward reconstructing past plankton populations. We first determined a 28S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) (i.e., nc28S) regional sequence library (240 bp) of various calanoid copepod species using ethanol-fixed plankton samples collected from across the Japanese archipelago. Then we applied the UltraSHOT method to extract DNA from an individual diapausing egg. Finally, the nc28S region of diapausing eggs collected from various lakes was sequenced and compared with the regional library for species identification. In total, 21 haplotypes of the nc28S region were recovered from planktonic samples of 11 Japanese freshwater calanoid copepod species. Despite the short length of this region, no identical haplotypes were shared among the species analyzed, including the Acanthodiaptomus pacificus complex treated as a species. Even different lineages of A. pacificus could be separated. These results indicate that the nc28S region can be used as a barcode in Japan. A total of 112 diapausing eggs collected from various lakes and ponds was processed, and the nc28S region of each was successfully sequenced. All of these egg sequences matched one or the other of the nc28S haplotypes in the regional library mentioned above. The set of protocols we applied (i.e., preparing a comprehensive regional sequence library and sequencing egg DNA) is thus useful for involving copepod diapausing eggs in paleolimnological studies in lakes. The nc28S region treated in this study has a strong potential to uncover the paleodiversity of copepods, at least in Japan.  相似文献

Plankton and littoral samples were obtained from several ponds and lagoons of different environments in the Mexican state of Tabasco. These systems are located in the Grijalva-Villahermosa or the Usumacinta basins. Twenty-two copepod species were recorded, most of them cyclopoids with neotropical and Caribbean affinities. Physical and chemical data associated with the species, as well as morphometric parameters of the surveyed systems were measured and analyzed. A correlation was found between diversity and parameters related to the productivity and the shoreline development (D L) of the systems; therefore the littoral heterogeneity could be used to predict the species number in shallow tropical systems. At a regional level, the Tabasco copepod fauna is similar to that known from the Yucatan Peninsula, but different from the faunal associations of central Mexico. Distributional patterns differed slightly between both basins and appear to be correlated with climatic variations. This first survey of the freshwater copepod fauna in the state of Tabasco shows it to be constituted mainly by neotropical forms.  相似文献

The East China Sea is characterized by a complex hydrographic regime and high biological productivity and diversity. This environmental setting in particular challenged a case study on the use of mesozooplankton community parameters as indicators of water masses. In order to reveal spatial patterns of zooplankton communities during summer, a large scale oceanic transect study was conducted. Two transects were taken in the southwest East China Sea region, covering for the first time the China shelf, slope, and the estuaries of the Yangtze river and of the Minjiang river, the northern Taiwan Strait, and the Kuroshio Current region. A total of 77 copepod species were quantified. Copepod abundance was significantly higher in the estuary of the Yangtze River runoff mixture waters and lowest at the Kuroshio Current Region. The calanoid Parvocalanus crassirostris was the most frequently occurring and abundant species retrieved from 27 samples of a total of 39 samples. The use of multivariate cluster analysis separated the Mainland China Shelf from the northern Taiwan Strait and the Kuroshio Current Region at the first hierarchical level. The use of an indicator value method (IndVal) associated with each cluster of stations revealed characteristic species assemblages. Two hierarchical levels defined 4 assemblages within geographical sectors representing copepod assemblages of the Kuroshio Current Region, of the northern Taiwan Strait and the southern China Shelf near the estuary of the Minjiang River and northern stations near the estuary of the Yangtze River. Overall, there was a strong correspondence between the distribution of certain copepod species and water masses. Differences between the Mainland China shelf, the northern Taiwan Strait and the Kuroshio Current Region were characterized by differences in species composition and abundance. Water mass boundaries in the study area were exclusively indicated by distinct differences in species composition, emphasizing a correlation between copepod communities and water masses of the southwest East China Sea in summer.  相似文献

Danshuei River in the northwestern tip of Taiwan dischargesinto the boundary coastal waters between the East China Seaand the Taiwan Strait. We conducted a 5-year study between October1998 and September 2003 to assess the influence of the northeast(NE) and the southwest (SW) monsoons on copepod assemblagesin the area. A total of 110 copepod species were identified.Temora turbinata, Paracalanus aculeatus, Acrocalanus gibber,Parvocalanus crassirostris and Oithona rigida comprised 80%of the copepod assemblages that consisted of coastal speciesfrom the East China Sea and species associated with the KuroshioBranch Current. The effect of the NE monsoon was observed duringa short period of each winter when species such as Calanus sinicuswere transported into the study area by the China Coastal Current.In summer, species such as A. gibber, Acrocalanus gracilis andCanthocalanus pauper may be transported into the study areafrom Southern Taiwan by the combined effect of the SW monsoonand the Kuroshio Current. Influence of the NE monsoon on thecopepod assemblages in terms of introduction of species fromthe Yellow Sea and the East China Sea during winter was observedevery year but was unlikely to represent an important carbonsource into the region due to its short-term nature. Local speciessuch as T. turbinata, P. crassirostris and O. rigida form amajor component of the copepod assemblage. The high copepoddiversity in the area was caused by the year-round presenceof many local species and the aggregation of different speciesfrom subtropical, tropical, and temperate water masses. Monsoon-drivenwater currents and the Kuroshio Branch Current appeared to maskthe effect of river discharge in the region.  相似文献
