Rearing and release procedures forCotesia melanoscela (Ratzeburg) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), an early-season parasitoid ofLymantria dispar (L.), were evaluated in 1995 and 1996 at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, Maryland, USA. Mass rearing procedures were developed during the winter/spring of 1995/1996 to produce diapausingC. melanoscela cocoons for experimentation. Program efficiency as measured by percent adult emergence was estimated to be 84% with a measured sex ratio of 48:52 M:F, at an estimated cost per 1 000 cocoons of U.S. $5.26 for materials and a labor requirement of approximately 6 hours. A host larvae:female parasitoid ratio of 100:1 was found to be most efficient in terms of number of parasitoid cocoons produced per female parasitoid, but a ratio of 100:2 was most efficient in terms of number of cocoons per rearing cup. OverwinteringC. melanoscela cocoons under natural conditions for 25 weeks (November placements) before expectedL. dispar egg hatch (mid-April) resulted in excellent synchrony with host egg hatch. Alternatively, holdingC. melanoscela cocoons in cold storage for 23 or more weeks at 5°C resulted in adult parasitoid emergence beginning 10 days after removal from cold storage, and proper timing of removal would result in similar synchrony of adult emergence with host egg hatch. These alternative release strategies give managers increased program flexibility.  相似文献

Abstract The sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is a global pest on numerous crops, including vegetables. Weekly inundative releases of a coccinellid predator (Coccinella undecimpunctata L. [Coleoptera: Coccinellidae]), a common green lacewing predator (Chrysoperla carnea Stephen [Neuroptera: Chrysopidae]), and a mirid predator (Macrolophus caliginosus[Wagner][Hemiptera: Miridae]) were independently made in three vegetable crops (cabbage [Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.], cucumber [Cucumis sativus L.], and squash [Cucurbita pepo L.]) for the management of the sweetpotato whitefly. Approximately 1 million to 2.5 million larvae or nymphs of each predator were released in the vegetable crops during 20 weeks. Whitefly populations were reduced by ≈ 25%–45% during most of the season in each crop where each predator was released. The effect of each predator was similar on whitefly population reduction. Late in the season (October) when whitefly populations were low, generally no benefit was obtained from releasing the predators. Numbers of predators recovered during sampling in all crops were greatest for C. carnea, but this corresponded with the fact that more individuals of this predator were released than any other predator in the experiment. These results help define the utility of these natural enemies for managing B. tabaci in vegetable crops.  相似文献

During this study the frequency of occurrence and dominance of phytophagous and predatory mites harboring seven vegetable crops in Egypt, namely common bean, cowpea, eggplant, okra, squash, sweet pepper and sweet potato during 2017–2018 were investigated to identify predatory mites that might be useful for the biological control of the phytophagous mites. Three phytophagous and nine predatory mite species were surveyed. The two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch of the family Tetranychidae was the dominant pest on these vegetables, while phytoseiids Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias- Henriot), Typhlodromips swirskii (Athias- Henriot) and Euseius scutalis Chant were the dominant predators. The population of the native or indigenous phytoseiid mite fauna in Egypt such as Phytoseiulus persimilis could be considered as a good biocontrol agent and a part of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program in the future. Mite fauna of Egypt especially local populations of Phytoseiulus persimilis can be considered for implementation in future Integrated Pest Management (IPM).  相似文献

The toxicity of bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, λ-cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, esfenvalerate, fluvalinate, phosalon and pirimicarb have been assessed in laboratory on the parasitic hymenoptera Aphidius rhopalosiphi. A strong toxic effect was found with every tested product when adult parasitoids were exposed to freshly applied residues on both glass plates and maize leaves for 24 hours. Only two products, fluvalinate and esfenvalerate, did not kill all the insects. No differences were observed between mortalities on glass plates and leaves. Applied on aphids mummies, cyfluthrin and deltamethrin slightly reduced the emergence of young parasitoids, but not their reproductive performance. The other tested products had no effects on adult emergence. On basis of these results, the insecticides are of comparable toxicity to A. rhopalosiphi in laboratory.  相似文献

Laboratory trials designed to investigate the biology of the gregarious endoparasitoidPsychophagus omnivorus (Hym.:Pteromolidae) on pupae of the pest speciesChrysodeixis chalcites, Spodoptera exigua orLacanobia oleracea (Lep.:Noctuidae) reveal that each of these candidate hosts can be used as oviposition sites. In all cases, wasp fecundity is high and generation is rapid. A minimum of 10 daughters is produced by eachP. omnivorus female every 3.5 weeks. Patterns of host attack and the distribution of wasp brood size vary according to the identity of the available host.Chrysodeixis chalcites andL. oleracea pupae are attacked at a moderate rate, but individual hosts support large broods. By contrast, individualS. exigua hosts sustain smaller broods, but these hosts are parasitised at a higher rate. WhenP. omnivorus encountersC. chalcites orL. oleracea, most host-attacks occur within the first 10 days of her adult lifespan. However, whenP. omnivorus is presented withS. exigua the oviposition period is prolonged until the fifth week of host-exposure. These differences between the oviposition strategies adopted byP. omnivorus against each host type have implications for its use as a biocontrol agent.  相似文献

Bemisia tabaci‐transmitted geminiviruses are one of the major threats on cassava and vegetable crops in Africa. However, to date, few studies are available on the diversity of B. tabaci and their associated endosymbionts in Africa. More than 28 species have been described in the complex of B. tabaci cryptic species; among them, 2 are invasive pests worldwide: MED and MEAM1. In order to assess the species diversity of B. tabaci in vegetable crops in Senegal, several samplings in different localities, hosts and seasons were collected and analyzed with nuclear (microsatellite) and mitochondrial (COI) markers. The bacterial endosymbiont community was also studied for each sample. Two species were detected: MED Q1 and MEAM1 B. Patterns of MED Q1 (dominance on most of the samples and sites, highest nuclear and mitochondrial diversity and broader secondary endosymbiont community: Hamiltonella, Cardinium, Wolbachia and Rickettsia), point toward a predominant resident begomovirus vector group for MED Q1 on market gardening crops. Furthermore, the lower prevalence of the second species MEAM1 B, its lower nuclear and mitochondrial diversity and a narrower secondary endosymbiont community (Hamiltonella/Rickettsia), indicate that this genetic group is exotic and results from a recent invasion in this area.  相似文献

Cohorts ofCotesia melanoscela (Ratzeburg) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) cocoons were exposed in the field at three Maryland locations to attack by natural enemies for two week periods, then were held in an outdoor insectary untilC. melanoscela adult or hyperparasitoid emergence. The timing of placement of theC. melanoscela cocoons in the field had a profound effect on the number ofC. melanoscela that survived and emerged as adults in synchrony with the field occurence of susceptible early-instarLymantria dispar (L.) larvae. The proportion of emerged adults available during susceptible host stages ranged from 1–92%, depending on dates of release. November or December placements ofC. melanoscela cocoons were most effective with 74–92 % emergence of adults during peak periods of susceptible host stages. Spring placements were least effective. The causes of ineffective placement, which varied with location and with date, were program (handling) loss, non-emergence, attack by hyperparasitoids, predation, andC. melanoscela adult emergence at times when appropriateL. dispar life stages would not be present. We concluded that November/December releases avoided natural enemies and promoted appropriate diapause and post-diapause development that enhanced survival and synchrony of adult emergence with host stage susceptibility.  相似文献

The parasitoids ofAonidiella aurantii (Maskell),Lepidosaphes beckii (Newman) andParlatoria pergandii Comstock were studied in a Navel orange grove in Valencia, Spain during three years. Four species ofAphytis were identified on yellow sticky traps,Aphytis chrysomphali (Mercet),Aphytis melinus Debach,Aphytis lepidosaphes Compere andAphytis hispanicus (Mercet). No consistent annual pattern was observed in the flight of adults.A. melinus, introduced some years earlier in the grove, was found in very low numbers and showed no signs of increasing and displacingA. chrysomphali as a parasitoid ofA. aurantii. On female scales of the three species sampled at regular intervals from leaves, twigs and fruit, the mean annual rate of active parasitism was similar and ranged from 3.5% to 8%.P. pergandii males were not parasitized, inL. beckii parasitism was usually much lower in male than in female scales, and inA. aurantii it was higher in the males. Scales of the three species were less parasitized on twigs than on leaves, and so wereL. beckii on fruit. The annual trend of parasitism byAphytis on scales fluctuated without a definite pattern. Parasitism byEncarsia inquirenda (Silvestri), an endoparasitoid ofP. pergandii, was more stable throughout the year and increased steadily from year to year.  相似文献

From 1971 to 1979 counts were made of the numbers of Opomyza florum adults found in vacuum net samples taken from cereal and grass fields on a 62-km2 study area in West Sussex. In 2 years, 1974 and 1975, counts were made of the numbers of adults found in similar samples taken from hedgerow grasses. In all years, numbers of adults were highest in winter wheat crops; relatively few were found in other autumn- or spring-sown cereals or in grass fields. Mean numbers (/m2) in winter wheat in June varied from 33.0 in 1974 to only 0.9 in 1977. In most years, the first adults were found in June in winter wheat; numbers reached a peak in July and then declined rapidly. More adults were usually found in winter wheat crops that followed winter wheat in the rotation than in those following grass. Adults were also more abundant in June in winter wheat crops sown relatively early than in those sown late. The current tendencies towards earlier drilling of winter wheat and to the growth of successive wheat crops could increase the pest status of O. florum.  相似文献

Studies on the insect pollinators diversity and their relative abundance in Eruca sativa Mill. (Arugula) and Brassica rapa L. (field mustard) was carried out during spring season from February to April consecutively during all the three years of 2016–18. Insect pollinators observed belonged to four orders i.e. Hymenoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera, and Coleoptera. A total of 20 major species of insect pollinators were recorded. The highest abundance of pollinator species belonged to Hymenoptera. The most prominent insect pollinator species were Apis mellifera followed by other three honey bee species of A. cerana, A. florea, and A. dorsata respectively. Some species of solitary bees were also recorded. From Diptera, four species of syrphid fly and one species from Muscidae family were also recorded. Insect pollinators recorded from order Lepidoptera were Pieris brassicae, Vanessa cardui, and Papilio demoleus. Lady bird beetle Coccinella septempunctata was recorded from Coleoptera order as occasional visitor. It was noticed that E. sativa attracted more insect pollinators than B. rapa which may be attributed to different amount and chemical properties of nectar, with number of pollen grains, and flower canopy of both crops. Further studies are needed to confirm the reasons for higher pollinator visitation to E. sativa than B. rapa through chemical analysis of nectar, amount of pollens, flower physiology and phenology of both crops.  相似文献

Previous field investigations and a pot-culture experiment treated with 0, 5, 10, and 20 mg kg?1 of reactive X-3B red dye (RRD), combined with chemical and statistical analyses, indicated that the amount of iron accumulated in seeds of soybean (Glycine max) and rice (Oryza sativa) and edible parts of watermelon (Citrullus Vulgaris Schrad) decreased with the increase in the amount of RRD added to various soils including burozem, aquorizem and krasnozem. There were significant negative relationships between the uptake of iron by the crops and the concentration of RRD added to the soils. Thus, chemical pollution of some organic dyes in agricultural soils may result in the deficiency of iron in crops. According to the extraction with 1.0 M NH4OAc solution and the determination of enzyme activity, the adverse effect inhibiting the uptake of iron in crops was chemical chelation and immobilization of iron with RRD. The activity of iron reductase was also greatly affected.  相似文献

The western spotted cucumber beetle, Diabrotica undecimpunctata undecimpunctata Mannerheim, is an important pest of melons (Cucurmis melo L.) in northern California. Recent observations indicate that adults are using alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) as a feeding host and larvae may be developing on the roots. Greenhouse studies were conducted during the winters of 2009 and 2010 in which larval development was compared on the roots of six field and vegetable crops commonly grown in the southern Sacramento Valley. The growth parameters used to evaluate the hosts were larval and pupal head capsule width, body width, and body length as well as total survival percentage and survival percentage to the third instar. According to larval growth and survivorship in 2009, maize (Zea mays L.) was the best host, followed by alfalfa and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) that were roughly equivalent to one another. Melon was a slightly weaker host than alfalfa and tomato; sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) was a completely incompatible host and thus dropped from the 2010 study. In 2010, melon was the weakest host for larval development. Maize was the superior host again followed closely by alfalfa that performed slightly better than tomato and lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.). Data suggest that larval western spotted cucumber beetles may primarily develop outside of melon fields and the adults emigrate to melons.  相似文献

Abstract .The pine sawfly, Diprion pini L, like almost all Diprionidae, has complex diapause phenomena which affect the prepupal stages (eonymph and pronymph) in the cocoon. Experiments using 20-hydroxyecdysone to break diapause of different populations of D. pini , were conducted. Doses of 2 and 10 μg/g of the hormone were injected into the insects in diapause, previously removed from their cocoons and placed in transparent capsules to observe their development. The experiments showed that 20-hydroxyecdysone may cause D. pini to resume development and may even totally break the diapause. However, this reactivation seemed to require large doses of 20-hydroxyecdysone. Moreover, the effects of applying this hormone varied according to the insect's origin, duration of the diapause maintenance and conditions of photoperiod and temperature present before and after the treatment. According to the cases, this resumption of development can affect a variable fraction of individuals and be more or less complete. It is suggested that the reaction to 20-hydroxyecdysone in standard conditions could be used to measure the intensity of the diapause of natural D. pini populations.

The biology of the arrhenotokous autoparasitoid,Encarsia pergandiella Howard, was studied in the laboratory on the silverleaf whitefly,Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring. Egg to adult development of parasitoid females averaged ca. 14 days at about 25.3+0.2?C regardless of whether the whitefly host was reared on tomato, eggplant or squash. While all instars ofB. argentifolii were accepted for primary parasitization, a greater percentage of third and fourth instars were parasitized. Mortality of whitefly nymphs in the absence of parasitization did not differ among instars and averaged about 35%. Second instar to pupal parasitoid females were accepted for secondary parasitization although a greater percent of pupal females were parasitized. About 40% of immatureE. pergandiella females more than 4 days old died in the absence of secondary parasitization when exposed to adultE. pergandiella females.  相似文献
