Boron (B) affects plant growth in soil at B doses (mg added B kg-1 soil) that appear in the range of natural background B concentrations. A study was set up to determine B bioavailability by testing B toxicity to plant as affected by soil properties and ageing after soil dosing. Nineteen soils (pH 4.4?C7.8) and 3 synthetic soils (sand-peat mixtures) were amended with 7 doses of H3BO3. Barley root elongation was determined immediately after B amendment and after 1 and 5 months ageing. Soil solution B concentrations increased linearly with added B concentrations with almost no detectable adsorption. In contrast, the ratio of aqua regia soluble B/soil solution B in unamended soils (no B added) was 10?C25 times higher than in B amended soils at similar aqua regia soluble B concentrations illustrating a much lower B availability in unamended soils. Soil solution B concentrations did not decrease by ageing. The toxic B doses or soil B concentrations that decreased barley root growth by 10% (EC10 values) varied about tenfold (respectively 3?C27 mg added B kg-1 and 5?C52 mg B kg-1) among soils. Corresponding thresholds in soil solution varied less than fourfold (16?C59 mg B l-1). Soil ageing for 5 months did not significantly change EC10 and EC50 values, expressed either as total soil B or as soil solution B, unless in 1 soil. Variability in EC10 and EC50 values was explained by various soil properties (soil moisture content, background B, %clay, cation exchange capacity), but covariance of these properties with the soil moisture content suggest that B dilution is the critical factor explaining B toxicity. It is concluded that effects of B amendments do not decrease by ageing and that soil solution B or B doses corrected for soil moisture content may be used as an index for B toxicity across different soils.  相似文献

Cadmium (Cd) exerts a detrimental effect on the metabolism of plants, whereas selenium (Se) may protect them against various stressors through its antioxidative activity. In this in vitro study we investigated the impact of Se (2 µM Na2SeO4) on the growth, nutrient (P, S, K, Ca, Mg, B, Mn, Fe and Zn) concentrations and cell integrity of rape (Brassica napus oleifera) and two wheat (Triticum aestivum) genotypes subjected to Cd stress (600 µM CdCl2). Rape accumulated both Cd and Se more than did wheat. In all plants, Cd markedly reduced the biomass, enhanced lipid peroxidation and diminished plasmalemma fluidity. A drop in the K uptake and the reduced plasmalemma permeability diminished the K efflux from the leaf cells. In contrast, Cd elevated S concomitantly with Zn, indicating an activity of detoxifying SH groups and SOD isoenzymes. When added alone, Se promoted the growth of all plants, it enhanced the accumulation of S, but the impact on other nutrients remained minor. In Cd-stressed plants, Se tended to counterbalance the Cd-induced changes in nutrients, it also reduced the lipid peroxidation and exerted positive effects on the cell membrane stability. The Cd stress and the protective role of Se were most evident in rape. The Finnish wheat genotype was less tolerant to Cd than the Polish one.  相似文献

The functional implications of root cortical senescence (RCS) are poorly understood. We tested the hypotheses that RCS in barley (1) reduces the respiration and nutrient content of root tissue; (2) decreases radial water and nutrient transport; and (3) is accompanied by increased suberization to protect the stele. Genetic variation for RCS exists between modern germplasm and landraces. Nitrogen and phosphorus deficiency increased the rate of RCS. Maximal RCS, defined as the disappearance of the entire root cortex, reduced root nitrogen content by 66%, phosphorus content by 63% and respiration by 87% compared with root segments with no RCS. Roots with maximal RCS had 90, 92 and 84% less radial water, nitrate and phosphorus transport, respectively, compared with segments with no RCS. The onset of RCS coincided with 30% greater aliphatic suberin in the endodermis. These results support the hypothesis that RCS reduces root carbon and nutrient costs and may therefore have adaptive significance for soil resource acquisition. By reducing root respiration and nutrient content, RCS could permit greater root growth, soil resource acquisition and resource allocation to other plant processes. RCS merits investigation as a trait for improving the performance of barley, wheat, triticale and rye under edaphic stress.  相似文献

Initial field observations revealed a shallow corn (Zea mays L.) root system on a Zimmerman fine sand in a corn/soybean (Glycine max L.) rotation. Since root distribution influences crop water and nutrient absorption, it is essential to identify factors limiting root growth. The objective of this study was to determine the factor(s) limiting corn rooting depth on an irrigated fine sand soil. Bulk density, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and soil water retention were measured on undisturbed soil cores. Corn root distribution assessed at tasseling over a 3-yr period showed an average of 94% of total root length within the upper 0.60 m of soil with 85% in the upper 0.30 m of soil. Mechanical impedance was estimated with a cone penetrometer on two dates with differing water contents. Cone penetrometer measurements greater than 3 MPa indicated mechanical impedance in soil layers extending from 0.15 to 0.35 m deep. Penetration resistance decreased as soil water content increased. However, soil water contents greater than field capacity were required to decrease penetration resistance below the 3 MPa threshold. Such water saturated conditions only occurred for short periods immediately after precipitation or irrigation events, thus roots usually encountered restrictive soil strengths. The soil layer from 0.15 to 0.60 m had high bulk density, 1.57 Mg m-3. This compacted soil layer, with slower saturated hydraulic conductivities (121 to 138 mm hr-1), held more water than the soil above or below it and reduced water movement through the soil profile. Crop water use occurred to a depth of approximately 0.75 m. In conclusion, a compacted soil layer confined roots almost entirely to the top 0.60 m of soil because it had high soil strength and bulk density. The compacted layer, in turn, retained more water for crop use.  相似文献

To assess the extent of variation in phosphorus acquisition efficiency of some winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), winter and spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes, depletion of inorganic phosphorus (P) extractable with 0.5 M NaHCO3 (NaHCO3-Pi) from the rhizosphere soil was studied. Nutrients supply, rhizosphere soil pH and soil water content was kept equal for all the genotypes with the aim to reduce the confounding variation due to these factors. The experimental set up implied that no difference in the relative growth rates, nitrogen, potassium and calcium content of shoot dry matter occurred among the genotypes. The winter wheat, winter barley and spring barley genotypes differed significantly (p>0.05) in their efficiency to acquire NaHCO3-Pi from the rhizosphere soil. The efficiency of the winter wheat genotypes to acquire NaHCO3-Pi from rhizosphere soil ranked Kraka > Gawain > Foreman > Sleipner = Obelisk > Kosack > Pepital > Arum. Winter wheat genotypes differed in extent of P depletion profiles in the rhizosphere, indicating variation in root hair length. The winter barley and spring barley genotypes also showed significant differences in their P depletion profiles near roots. The efficiency of the winter barley genotypes to acquire soil P in the rhizosphere ranked Hamu > Frost > Marinka > Astrid > Clarine = Angora. The efficiency of spring barley genotypes to acquire NaHCO3-Pi in the rhizosphere ranked Canut > Etna Riga > Digger > Peel > Semal > Alexis. The rhizosphere pH remained unchanged, suggesting that additional mechanisms such as root hair formation and root exudates play a significant role in causing variation in P acquisition among the genotypes.  相似文献

Phytomonitoring techniques for irrigation of avocado orchards indicate that plants respond very rapidly to fluctuations in soil water content. Root to leaf abscicic acid transport cannot fully explain the almost immediate response of stomata to either irrigation and/or sudden changes in climatic conditions. Therefore, we studied the existence of a fast conducting signal between roots and leaves, and the possible involvement of such a signal in the regulation of stomatal behavior. Two-year-old avocado trees were subjected to drying and re-watering cycles or changes in incident radiation (light or darkness). The difference in extracellular electrical potential between the leaf petiole and the base of stem (DeltaV(L-S)) was continuously recorded. Stomatal conductance (gs) was also recorded for the same leaves that were used for voltage difference measurements. A sudden change in soil water content induced by root drying and re-watering was accompanied by a slow, significant change in the recorded DeltaV(L-S) signal, which was fully developed at 52 and 32min for root drying and re-watering, respectively. We found an inverse correlation (r=-0.56) between the change of DeltaV(L-S) and the gs difference measured before and after each soil-drying treatment. Plants that were girdled to disrupt the phloem and then irrigated tended to have lower DeltaV(L-S) differences over time than non-girdled irrigated plants, suggesting that the electrical signal was transmitted in the phloem. The existence of a fast signal transmitted from the root to the leaf that can be measured and correlated with stomatal control opens the possibility of developing a new phytomonitoring technique and/or artificially modifying plant responses by imposing agronomic management strategies aimed at rapid stomatal adaptation to changes in soil water content.  相似文献

Soil cores were taken to estimate root length prior to transplanting and after 60 days growth of a dry season sorghum crop in an agroforestry experiment in a semi-arid region of north-east Nigeria. The experiment compared sorghum grown alone and with two tree species (Acacia nilotica subsp adstringens and Prosopis juliflora) and one management treatment (pruning of tree crowns). Data on soil water content were collected from 6 days before and 20, 60 and 110 days after sorghum transplanting. The main findings were: (i) Per unit root length, A. nilotica had a more negative effect on sorghum above and below ground than P. juliflora. This appeared to be correlated with greater rates of water extraction from layers of soil shared with crop roots; (ii) Crown pruning substantially reduced the competitive effect of P. juliflora on crop yield but did not affect the impact of A. nilotica on intercropped sorghum. Since the impact of pruning on tree-crop competition varies with species, tree species selection and management will be a key factor in determining the feasibility of dryland agroforestry systems.  相似文献

Analyses of low angle x-ray scattering from chromatin, isolated by identical procedures but from different species, indicate that fiber diameter and number of nucleosomes per unit length increase with the amount of nucleosome linker DNA. Experiments were conducted at physiological ionic strength to obtain parameters reflecting the structure most likely present in living cells. Guinier analyses were performed on scattering from solutions of soluble chromatin from Necturus maculosus erythrocytes (linker length 48 bp), chicken erythrocytes (linker length 64 bp), and Thyone briareus sperm (linker length 87 bp). The results were extrapolated to infinite dilution to eliminate interparticle contributions to the scattering. Cross-sectional radii of gyration were found to be 10.9 +/- 0.5, 12.1 +/- 0.4, and 15.9 +/- 0.5 nm for Necturus, chicken, and Thyone chromatin, respectively, which are consistent with fiber diameters of 30.8, 34.2, and 45.0 nm. Mass per unit lengths were found to be 6.9 +/- 0.5, 8.3 +/- 0.6, and 11.8 +/- 1.4 nucleosomes per 10 nm for Necturus, chicken, and Thyone chromatin, respectively. The geometrical consequences of the experimental mass per unit lengths and radii of gyration are consistent with a conserved interaction among nucleosomes. Cross-linking agents were found to have little effect on fiber external geometry, but significant effect on internal structure. The absolute values of fiber diameter and mass per unit length, and their dependencies upon linker length agree with the predictions of the double-helical crossed-linker model. A compilation of all published x-ray scattering data from the last decade indicates that the relationship between chromatin structure and linker length is consistent with data obtained by other investigators.  相似文献

Root effects on soil water and hydraulic properties   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Plants can affect soil moisture and the soil hydraulic properties both directly by root water uptake and indirectly by modifying the soil structure. Furthermore, water in plant roots is mostly neglected when studying soil hydraulic properties. In this contribution, we analyze effects of the moisture content inside roots as compared to bulk soil moisture contents and speculate on implications of non-capillary-bound root water for determination of soil moisture and calibration of soil hydraulic properties. In a field crop of maize (Zea mays) of 75 cm row spacing, we sampled the total soil volumes of 0.7 m × 0.4 m and 0.3 m deep plots at the time of tasseling. For each of the 84 soil cubes of 10 cm edge length, root mass and length as well as moisture content and soil bulk density were determined. Roots were separated in 3 size classes for which a mean root porosity of 0.82 was obtained from the relation between root dry mass density and root bulk density using pycnometers. The spatially distributed fractions of root water contents were compared with those of the water in capillary pores of the soil matrix. Water inside roots was mostly below 2–5% of total soil water content; however, locally near the plant rows it was up to 20%. The results suggest that soil moisture in roots should be separately considered. Upon drying, the relation between the soil and root water may change towards water remaining in roots. Relations depend especially on soil water retention properties, growth stages, and root distributions. Gravimetric soil water content measurement could be misleading and TDR probes providing an integrated signal are difficult to interpret. Root effects should be more intensively studied for improved field soil water balance calculations. Four classes of models have been proposed for the internal structure of eukaryotic chromosome fibers--the solenoid, twisted-ribbon, crossed-linker, and superbead models. We have collected electron image and x-ray scattering data from nuclei, and isolated chromatin fibers of seven different tissues to distinguish between these models. The fiber diameters are related to the linker lengths by the equation: D(N) = 19.3 + 0.23 N, where D(N) is the external diameter (nm) and N is the linker length (base pairs). The number of nucleosomes per unit length of the fibers is also related to linker length. Detailed studies were done on the highly regular chromatin from erythrocytes of Necturus (mud puppy) and sperm of Thyone (sea cucumber). Necturus chromatin fibers (N = 48 bp) have diameters of 31 nm and have 7.5 +/- 1 nucleosomes per 10 nm along the axis. Thyone chromatin fibers (N = 87 bp) have diameters of 39 nm and have 12 +/- 2 nucleosomes per 10 nm along the axis. Fourier transforms of electron micrographs of Necturus fibers showed left-handed helical symmetry with a pitch of 25.8 +/- 0.8 nm and pitch angle of 32 +/- 3 degrees, consistent with a double helix. Comparable conclusions were drawn from the Thyone data. The data do not support the solenoid, twisted-ribbon, or supranucleosomal particle models. The data do support two crossed-linker models having left-handed double-helical symmetry and conserved nucleosome interactions.  相似文献

The main components of drought tolerance of six maize genotypes were studied to evaluate crop performance in water limiting environments: (1) the postponement of dehydration by reduced transpiration rate (TR) and an increased efficiency of water acquisition from soil; (2) the tolerance of dehydration by effective physiological water use. The aim was to describe the genotype dependent response to drought in leaf and root traits and water relations using data from controlled environment and field experiments, and using dynamic simulation by the Swedish Coup model. High genetic variation was detected in the root density, acquisition efficiency and water use among the genotypes. The female parent lines had the greatest TR with the smallest dry matter accumulation in water deficiency, whereas hybrids could acquire more water from dryer soil while maintaining a lower TR. Hybrid Mv 444 increased water potential more strongly in leaves than hybrid Norma. The postponement of dehydration was observed for Norma, while more tolerance to dehydration characterized Mv 444. Simulation was an effective tool for testing hypotheses considering water acquisition efficiency and for summarizing the results of the measurements in a formalized structure; it helped to quantify the dynamics of water availability and the impact of drought on the growth of the maize genotypes.  相似文献

This paper gives the first reports on aphid effects on rhizosphere organisms as influenced by soil nutrient status and plant development. Barley plants grown in pots fertilized with N but without P (N), with N and P (NP), or not fertilized (0) were sampled in the early growth phase (day 25), 1 week before and 1 week after spike emergence. Aphids were added 16 days before sampling was carried out. In a separate experiment belowground respiration was measured on N and NP fertilized plant–soil systems with aphid treatments comparable to the first experiment. Aphids reduced numbers of rhizosphere bacteria and fungal feeding nematodes 1 week before spike emergence. Before spike emergence, aphids reduced belowground respiration in NP treatments. These findings strongly indicate that aphids reduced allocation of photoassimilates to roots and deposition of root exudates in the growth phase of the plant. Contrary to this, 1 week after spike emergence numbers of bacteria, fungal feeding nematodes and Protozoa were higher in rhizospheres of plants subjected to aphids probably because aphids enhanced root mortality and root decomposition. Protozoa and bacterial feeding nematodes were stimulated at different experimental conditions with nematodes being the dominant bacterial grazers at N fertilization and Protozoa in the NP treatment before spike emergence.  相似文献

Summary The influence of different depths of submergence (6±1 and 3±1 cm) and moisture tensions (0, 20, 60, 350, 500 and 1000 millibar) of lateritic sandy loam soil on root porosity and growth parameters of rice, variety IR8 was studied at two different growth phases under controlled greenhouse conditions. Best rice growth occurred at 3±1 cm submergence and it significantly reduced with the increase of soil moisture tension. Unlike other growth parameters, root length increased as the soil moisture tension was raised. The development of pore spaces in rice roots decreased significantly with the increase in soil moisture tension. However, higher root porosity was observed under greater depths of submergence. Irrespective of soil water condition, the number and dry weight of the root system showed significant positive correlation with root porosity. Oxygen diffusion rate in soil, which increased with the increasing moisture tension, was significantly and inversely related with the porosity of rice root. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L., cv. Hemus) plants were grown in nutrient solution with or without 54 μM Cd2+ for 12 d. A treatment with Cd2+ inhibited the growth of young barley plants. The main factor limiting plant growth was net assimilation rate, due to decreased photosynthetic rate and accelerated dark respiration rate. One of the reasons for the reduced photosynthetic rate was the lower chlorophyll and carotenoid content. Cd2+ decreased water potential and transpiration rate, but relative water content in leaves of the treated plants was not significantly changed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Aims

Phosphorus (P) limits crop yield and P-fertilisers are frequently applied to agricultural soils. However, supplies of quality rock phosphate are diminishing. Plants have evolved mechanisms to improve P-acquisition and understanding these could improve the long-term sustainability of agriculture. Here we examined interactions between root hairs and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonisation in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.).

Methods

Barley mutants exhibiting different root hair phenotypes, wild type barley and narrowleaf plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) were grown in the glasshouse in P-sufficient and P-deficient treatments and allowed to develop AM colonization from the natural soil community. Plants were harvested after 6 weeks growth and root hair length, AM-fungal colonisation, shoot biomass and P-accumulation measured.

Results

Under P-deficient conditions, root hair length and AM colonisation were negatively related suggesting that resources are allocated to root hairs rather than to AM fungi in response to P-deficiency. There was evidence that barley and narrowleaf plantain employed different strategies to increase P-acquisition under identical conditions, but root hairs were more effective.

Conclusions

This research suggests future barley breeding programmes should focus on maintaining or improving root hair phenotypes and that pursuing enhancements to AM associations under the prevalent agricultural conditions tested here would be ineffectual.  相似文献

Little information is available on the variability of the dynamics of the actual and observed root respiration rate in relation to abiotic factors. In this study, we describe I) interactions between soil CO2 concentration, temperature, soil water content and root respiration, and II) the effect of short-term fluctuations of these three environmental factors on the relation between actual and observed root respiration rates. We designed an automated, open, gas-exchange system that allows continuous measurements on 12 chambers with intact roots in soil. By using three distinct chamber designs with each a different path for the air flow, we were able to measure root respiration over a 50-fold range of soil CO2 concentrations (400 to 25000 ppm) and to separate the effect of irrigation on observed vs. actual root respiration rate. All respiration measurements were made on one-year-old citrus seedlings in sterilized sandy soil with minimal organic material.Root respiration was strongly affected by diurnal fluctuations in temperature (Q10 = 2), which agrees well with the literature. In contrast to earlier findings for Douglas-fir (Qi et al., 1994), root respiration rates of citrus were not affected by soil CO2 concentrations (400 to 25000 ppm CO2; pH around 6). Soil CO2 was strongly affected by soil water content but not by respiration measurements, unless the air flow for root respiration measurements was directed through the soil. The latter method of measuring root respiration reduced soil CO2 concentration to that of incoming air. Irrigation caused a temporary reduction in CO2 diffusion, decreasing the observed respiration rates obtained by techniques that depended on diffusion. This apparent drop in respiration rate did not occur if the air flow was directed through the soil. Our dynamic data are used to indicate the optimal method of measuring root respiration in soil, in relation to the objectives and limitations of the experimental conditions.  相似文献
