Dietary proteins are considered crucial for growth and maintenance in mammals, but many fruit‐eating mammals feed largely on a protein‐poor diet. In the Chiroptera, frugivory has evolved twice, in the Old World Pteropodidae and in the New World Phyllostomidae, especially the Stenodermatinae. Recent studies based on the analysis of nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) suggest that phyllostomids feed to varying degrees on arthropods to meet their nitrogen (N) requirements. Arthropod feeding has rarely been observed in Pteropodidae. Thus, we asked whether pteropodids meet their N requirements by feeding exclusively on plant matter. We predicted that tissue from pteropodid wing membranes should be depleted in 15N relative to those of obligate insectivorous rhinolophoid, vespertilionid or emballonurid bats, if pteropodids acquire proteins exclusively from fruits, leaves or nectar. We found that δ15N in pteropodids were significantly lower than in obligate insectivorous bats. In addition, mean δ15N of Old World pteropodids was similar to that of obligate frugivorous stenodermatines of the New World tropics. We infer from these data that pteropodids are predominantly phytophagous bats. From a nutritional perspective, pteropodids and stenodermatines are very similar, suggesting that they share convergent physiological adaptations to compensate for the lack of dietary nitrogen.  相似文献

We measured stable-nitrogen (δ15N) and stable-carbon (δ13C) isotope ratios in muscle and hair from 7 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) from the Pribilof Islands, Alaska, and 27 Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), and 14 harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) from the Gulf of Alaska and coast of Washington State, in order to contrast dietary information derived from isotopic vs. available conventional dietary studies. Stable-nitrogen-isotope analysis of muscle revealed that harbor seals were enriched over sea lions (mean δ15N = 18.6‰vs. 17.5‰) which were in turn enriched over northern fur seals (mean δ15N = 16.6‰). Trophic segregation among these species likely results primarily from differential reliance on herring (Clupea harengus), Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus monopterygius), and large vs. small walleye pollock (Theregra chalcogramma). According to their δ15N values, adult male Steller sea lions showed a higher trophic position than adult females (mean δ15N: 18.0‰vs. 17.2‰), whereas adult female northern fur seals were trophically higher than juvenile male fur seals (mean δ15N: 16.5‰vs. 15.0‰). Each of these observed differences likely resulted from differential reliance on squid or differences in the size range of pollock consumed. Three northern fur seal pups showed higher δ15N enrichment over adults (mean 17.7‰vs. 15.8‰) due to their reliance on their mother's milk. Stable-carbon isotope measurements of hair revealed a cline toward more negative values with latitude. Segregation in hair δ13C between Steller sea lions and harbor seals off the coast of Washington (mean δ13C: ?13.6‰vs.?15.0‰) reflected the greater association of harbor seals with freshwater input from the Columbia River. Our study demonstrates the utility of the stable isotope approach to augment conventional dietary analyses of pinnipeds and other marine mammals.  相似文献

Nitrogen stable isotope analysis studies have become a useful tool in dietary studies to quantify differences in diet composition among species or individuals. However, laboratory studies have revealed several factors that influence the nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) in animal tissues (e.g. habitat, amount of ingested food, and metabolic rate). The influence of these factors has not been validated for free-ranging bat species, which is important for interpreting nitrogen isotope data in field studies. In this study, we measured δ15N from wing membranes (δ15Nw) and habitat samples (δ15Nh; soil and leaf, or sediment) to test for effects of diet, age, and individual energy demand in three free-living bat species (Myotis daubentonii, Nyctalus noctula and Nyctalus leisleri). We hypothesised that based on differences in diet composition δ15Nw values should increase in the sequence M. daubentonii, N. leisleri, and highest N. noctula. Furthermore, juveniles should have significantly lower δ15Nw compared to their mothers. Thirdly, the δ15Nw values of reproductively active individuals should be significantly higher than those of non-reproductive individuals. Values of δ15Nw were significantly influenced by differences in feeding ecology among species and individual reproductive status, but not by animal age. Our results show that species feeding on primary consumers have lower δ15Nw values than species feeding on secondary and tertiary consumers. Further, independent young did not differ in their δ15Nw values from adults suggesting that their tissues already reflect the insect diet. The effect of reproductive status varied among species which might reflect intra-specific differences in foraging behaviour of generalist vs. specialist species. In this study, we demonstrated that δ15N can provide information on the dietary range of bats, but researchers should account for variation owing to reproductive status, habitat, and species.  相似文献

Some regions of the Chukchi Sea shelf are characterized by an unusually high abundance of the benthos. The carbon and nitrogen isotope composition (δ13C and δ15N) of two crab species, Chionoecetes opilio and Hyas coarctatus, which occupy the upper trophic levels in bottom communities in the southern regions influenced by the Anadyr Water (AW) and in the regions exposed to the influence of the Siberian Coastal Current (SCC), was analyzed in order to compare between the trophic characteristics of their benthic communities. It has been found that these two species have similar spatial trends of stable isotope signature variations. As the effect of the productive AW on bottom communities decreases, a substantial depletion of δ13C with a simultaneous growth of δ15N values are observed in crab tissues. The trophic niches of C. opilio and H. coarctatus, which are represented by “isotope” niches as standard ellipse areas in the δ13C/δ15N biplot, significantly overlap in communities of the southern part of the shelf and become completely separated in those of the regions influenced by the SCC. The separation of the isotope niches of C. opilio and H. coarctatus and the simultaneous increase in δ15N values in both species by more than 3‰ indicate partitioning of the trophic resources between them and elongation of the food chains of both these carnivorous generalists by almost one trophic level in the communities that exist under the influence of less productive waters.  相似文献

Flying foxes (Pteropodidae) are key seed dispersers on the African continent, yet their migratory behavior is largely unknown. Here, we studied the movement ecology of the straw-colored fruit bat, Eidolon helvum, and other fruit bats by analyzing stable isotope ratios in fur collected from museum specimens. In a triple-isotope approach based on samples of two ecologically similar non-migratory pteropodids, we first confirmed that a stable isotope approach is capable of delineating between geographically distinct locations in Sub-Saharan Africa. A discriminant function analysis assigned 84% of individuals correctly to their capture site. Further, we assessed how well hydrogen stable isotope ratios (δ2H) of fur keratin collected from non-migratory species (n = 191 individuals) records variation in δ2H of precipitation water in sub-Saharan Africa. Overall, we found positive, negative and no correlations within the six studied species. We then developed a reduced major axis regression equation based on individual data of non-migratory species to predict where potentially migratory E. helvum (n = 88) would come from based on their keratin δ2H. Across non-migratory species, δ2H of keratin and local water correlated positively. Based on the isoscape origin model, 22% of E. helvum were migratory, i.e. individuals had migrated over at least 250 km prior to their capture. Migratory individuals came from locations at a median distance of about 860 km from the collection site, four even from distances of at least 2,000 km. Ground-truthing of our isoscape origin model based on keratin δ2H of extant E. helvum (n = 76) supported a high predictive power of assigning the provenance of African flying foxes. Our study highlights that stable isotope ratios can be used to explain the migratory behavior of flying foxes, even on the isotopically relatively homogenous African continent, and with material collected by museums many decades or more than a century ago.  相似文献

This study contrasted the influence of tertiary treated municipal wastewater effluent (MWWE) exposure on the abundance, food selection (stomach contents), and carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope signatures of Rainbow Darter (Etheostoma caeruleum) and Greenside Darter (Etheostoma blennioides) in a small receiving stream in southern Ontario, Canada. Despite tertiary treatment resulting in relatively high effluent quality, there is continued concern for environmental degradation downstream of the effluent outfall because of the relatively small size of the receiving environment and recent studies that have indicated changes occurring in relative fish abundance and stable isotope signatures. In July and August of 2009 fish and benthic invertebrate communities were examined along with analysis of δ13C and δ15N of the most common species to determine the effects of effluent exposure on the food web. Rainbow Darter increased in abundance and their δ15N values were enriched immediately downstream of the effluent outfall throughout the summer (July and August). In contrast, while δ15N of Greenside Darter followed a similar pattern in July, they were not enriched in August. The benthic community was changed immediately downstream of the outfall and the δ15N of invertebrates was enriched, similar to that observed in Rainbow Darter. Stomach contents of the two darter species diverged the most in the summer possibly explaining some of the changes in δ13C and δ15N among sites. It is possible that Greenside Darter fed on less enriched food downstream of the outfall, or fed outside of the effluent plume during the summer. Rainbow Darter may be able to exploit the changes in habitat and prey composition, resulting in differences in relative abundance of darters immediately downstream of the effluent outfall.  相似文献

Stable nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) isotope ratios from muscle, liver and yolk were analysed from the mother and embryos of an ovoviviparous shark, Hexanchus griseus. Embryonic liver and muscle had similar δ15N and δ13C ratios or were depleted in heavy isotopes, compared to the same maternal somatic and reproductive yolk tissues, but no relationship existed between δ15N or δ13C and embryo length, as expected, because a switch to placental nourishment is lacking in this species. This study expands the understanding of maternal nourishment and embryonic stable isotope differences in ovoviviparous sharks.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of macroinvertebrates inhabiting littoral zones of lakes can serve as useful indicators of material loading from the watershed. We collected snails (Semisulcospira spp.) and bivalves (Unio douglasiae biwae Kobelt) from 29 littoral sites in Lake Biwa near the mouths of river tributaries with various human population density (HPD) and land-use patterns. The δ13C and δ15N signatures were determined for three potential food sources: particulate organic matter in the pelagic zone (PPOM), riverine particulate organic matter from tributaries (RPOM) and epilithic organic matter in the littoral zone (EOM). The stable isotope mixing model revealed that snails relied mainly on EOM, and bivalves on PPOM and RPOM. Multiple regression analysis showed that intersite variation in δ15N for snails was best explained by HPD, while variation in δ15N of EOM and nitrate was explained to a lesser extent by HPD. Comparison with isotope signatures of their food sources and riverine nutrients revealed that snails assimilated anthropogenic nitrogen from wastewater in the watershed. Our results also showed that the δ13C value of bivalves was marginally related to the fraction of paddy fields in the watersheds. In conclusion, the isotope signatures of macroinvertebrates inhabiting the littoral zone can be useful indicators of anthropogenic impacts from the watershed.  相似文献

River discharge supplies nearshore communities with a terrestrial carbon source that is often reflected in invertebrate and fish consumers. Recent studies in the Beaufort Sea have documented widespread terrestrial carbon use among invertebrates, but only limited use among nearshore fish consumers. Here, we examine the carbon source and diet of rapidly growing young-of-year Arctic cisco (Coregonus autumnalis) using stable isotope values (δ13C and δ15N) from muscle and diet analysis (stomach contents) during a critical and previously unsampled life stage. Stable isotope values (δ15N and δ13C) may differentiate between terrestrial and marine sources and integrate over longer time frames (weeks). Diet analysis provides species-specific information, but only from recent foraging (days). Average δ13C for all individuals was ?25.7 ‰, with the smallest individuals possessing significantly depleted δ13C values indicative of a stronger reliance of terrestrial carbon sources as compared to larger individuals. Average δ15N for all individuals was 10.4 ‰, with little variation among individuals. As fish length increased, the proportion of offshore Calanus prey and neritic Mysis prey increased. Rapid young-of-year growth in Arctic cisco appears to use terrestrial carbon sources obtained by consuming a mixture of neritic and offshore zooplankton. Shifts in the magnitude or phenology of river discharge and the delivery of terrestrial carbon may alter the ecology of nearshore fish consumers.  相似文献

Assays of elemental and stable‐isotope ratios across growth increments of scales have the potential to provide a non‐lethal alternative to otolith chemistry for identifying migration and ontogenetic trophic shifts. A central assumption when employing scales as otolith analogues is that any scale from an individual will provide equivalent information about the chemical history of that fish. This assumption was investigated with multiple scales from wild and captive euryhaline Atlantic tarpon Megalops atlanticus from the north‐west Gulf of Mexico. Elemental (Sr:Ca) and isotope‐ratio (δ13C and δ15N) life‐history profiles were compared among multiple scales from each fish. All three chemical proxies showed highly consistent patterns among non‐regenerated scales, while patterns in regenerated scales diverged, indicating rapid regrowth of interior scale material at the onset of regeneration. Patterns of Sr:Ca and δ13C covaried, supporting their use as salinity proxies, while δ15N patterns were consistent with ontogenetic diet shifts. Water samples taken from aquaria holding captive fish were used to calculate partition coefficients for a suite of elements in M. atlanticus scales for future quantification of migratory movements in the region. Together, these results support the assumption that non‐regenerated scales from individual M. atlanticus provide equivalent chemical histories, further validating their use as a viable non‐lethal alternative to otoliths.  相似文献

Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope variations in baleen plates of sei whales (Balaenoptera borealis) stranded after a mass mortality event in Chilean Patagonia were investigated to assess potential dietary and migratory patterns. Carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of seven baleens from six individuals were analyzed. The δ13C values ranged from ? 19.1 to ? 15.9‰ and the δ15N values from 8.7 to 15.4‰. Variations of up to 2.9‰ for δ13C and 5.3‰ for δ15N were observed within one baleen. Carbon and nitrogen isotope records of each baleen were significantly correlated and showed recurring oscillations confirmed by wavelet analyses. Oscillations slightly differed in periodicity indicating variable baleen growth rates between 10.0 and 16.5 cm/year. Food sources of the whales are discussed in terms of available isotope data for potential prey taxa and potential migratory behavior on the basis of latitudinal isotope gradients of particulate organic matter. Cyclicity could be explained by regular migrations of the sei whales from subtropical calving areas to high‐latitude foraging grounds. δ15N records of baleens differed between individuals eventually pointing to diverse feeding and migratory preferences among sei whale individuals.  相似文献

Much of the primatology literature on stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) has focused on African and New World species, with comparatively little research published on Asian primates. Here we present hair δ13C and δ15N isotope values for a sample of 33 long-tailed macaques from Singapore. We evaluate the suggestion by a previous researcher that forest degradation and biodiversity loss in Singapore have led to a decline in macaque trophic level. The results of our analysis indicated significant spatial variability in δ13C but not δ15N. The range of variation in δ13C was consistent with a diet based on C3 resources, with one group exhibiting low values consistent with a closed canopy environment. Relative to other macaque species from Europe and Asia, the macaques from Singapore exhibited a low mean δ13C value but mid-range mean δ15N value. Previous research suggesting a decline in macaque trophic level is not supported by the results of our study.  相似文献

We estimated the relative contribution of fruits and insects as sources of dietary protein in two species of Neotropical frugivorous bats (Artibeus jamaicensis and Sturnira lilium) using stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses. An insectivorous species (Pteronotus parnellii) was also included for comparison. We found constant patterns in stable carbon and nitrogen isotope composition in blood that separated the two species of frugivorous bats from the insectivorous bat. When we used these isotopic values (combined with those of dietary fruits and insects) to estimate the percent contribution of fruits and insects to the diet of the bats, we obtained different results, depending on assumptions and model adopted. We tested models using both 8“N and 8′3C results simultaneously and separately and further used diet‐tissue fractionation factors of 3%o for nitrogen and 1 and 3.5%o for carbon. We found that a carbon‐based model with a diet‐blood enrichment factor of 3.5%o produced the most parsimonious results. The model estimated that A. jamaicensis and S. lilium obtained most of their protein requirements from fruits, whereas P. parnellii fed mostly on insects. No sexual or seasonal variations in the diet of the two frugivorous species were detected. We found no evidence that the diet of sexually active females differed from that of nonsexually active females in the two species of frugivorous bats. We suggest that future studies better define isotopic fractionation between diet and tissues of bats using captive rearing and controlled diets.  相似文献

Many European migratory bat species hibernate in large hollow trees, a decreasing resource in present day silviculture. Here, we report on the importance of man-made hibernacula to support trans-boundary populations of noctule bats (Nyctalus noctula), a species that performs seasonal long distance movements throughout Europe. In winter, we surveyed nine bat roosts (eight artificial and one natural) in Germany and collected small tufts of fur from a total of 608 individuals. We then measured the stable isotope ratios of the non-exchangeable hydrogen in fur keratin and estimated the origin of migrants using a refined isoscape origin model that included information on expected flight distances and migration directions. According to the stable isotope signature, 78 % of hibernating bats originated from local populations. The remaining 22 % of hibernacula occupants originated from distant populations, mostly from places in northern or eastern countries such as Sweden, Poland and Baltic countries. Our results confirm that many noctule bats cross one or several political borders during migration. Data on the breeding origin of hibernating noctule bats also suggest that artificial roosts may not only be important for local but also for distant populations. Protection of natural and artificial hibernacula in managed forests may support the trans-boundary populations of migratory bats when hollow trees are scarce in managed forests.  相似文献

This study used stable‐isotope analysis to define the nearshore regional residency and movements of the small‐bodied Australian sharpnose shark Rhizoprionodon taylori. Plasma and muscle δ13C and δ15N of R. taylori were collected from across five embayments and compared with values of seagrass and plankton from each bay. Linear distances between adjacent bays ranged from 30 to 150 km. There was a positive geographic correlation between R. taylori tissue and environmental δ13C values. Populations with the highest tissue δ15N were collected from bays that had the highest environmental δ15N values. These results suggest that R. taylori did not forage more than 100 km away from their capture location within 6 months to 1 year. The successful application of isotope analysis to define R. taylori movement demonstrates that this technique may be used in addition to traditional methods to study the movement of sharks, even within similar habitats across regionally small spatial scales (<100 km).  相似文献

Migratory behavior in bats is poorly described, particularly in the Neotropics. Stable-hydrogen isotope (δD) analysis may allow tracking of altitudinal movements of bats but has not been explored. δD values in rainwater (δDp) deplete linearly with altitude and are reflected in the keratinous tissues of animals through diet. A mismatch between keratin δD (δDk) and that expected at the capture site based on δDp can indicate prior migration. We collected rainwater, claws and hair from eight bat species at two lower-montane forest sites in Nicaragua. Claw δD for Carollia brevicauda and hair and claws for Desmodus rotundus (known to be non-migratory) fell within the predicted range based on rainwater (−17 to −60‰) suggesting these tissues were synthesized at the study site. δD tissue values for Artibeus toltecus, Sturnira lilium, Glossophaga soricina, Anoura geoffroyi, and hair for C. brevicauda were more negative than predicted for the capture site (−60‰) suggesting tissue synthesis at higher elevation and migration downslope to the capture site. However, our study area represents the highest elevation in the region; the nearest appropriate higher elevations are 350–500 km away and seasonal migration is expected to be<200 km. Thus we consider that seasonal shifts in δDp (9 to −45‰) may result in differences in species which molt at different times, and that diet may have driven differences in δD. Our results suggest that the effects of molt timing and diet may first need to be understood before δD may be successfully used to track bat movements.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were used to track major dietary variations in arthropods found in a cave located in a neotropical savanna in Central Brazil. We determined the δ13C and δ15N for cave crickets, cockroaches, spiders, guano of a hematophagous bat, and leaf litter found on the ground near the cave entrance. The δ13C and δ15N for the cricket and cockroaches showed that bat guano was not the only food item for these arthropods. They had intermediate δ13C and δ15N between bat guano and leaf litter, which means that they consumed additional food resources other than guano in their diet, independent of distribution of guano deposits in the cave. The spiders, predators with great mobility, seemed to not have a preferential diet item since their isotope signals indicated they hunt both crickets and cockroaches. The δ13C of the bat guano (?15.4‰) indicated that the diet of these hematophagous bats relied on animals fed with C4 plants. The conversion of native savanna vegetation of which the debris is mostly from C3 plants, to pasture, based on C4 African grass, a remarkably common land use transformation in the region, is indirectly influencing the diet of hematophagous bats, which basically relied on exotic fauna. The C and N stable isotope ratios showed that the arthropods inside the cave do not rely solely on bat guano for their diet, but interact directly with the external environment, through litter debris, indicating a significant exchange of energy and matter between the cave environment and the surrounding area.  相似文献

Among the mechanisms that allow competing species to coexist are resource partitioning and dietary segregation. The current study uses multiple stable isotopes, carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N) and sulphur (δ34S), to test the hypothesis that dietary segregation in cohabiting invasive mysids (Limnomysis benedeni and Katamysis warpachowskyi) and gammarids (Dikerogammarus villosus and Gammarus roeselii) will be reflected by differences in isotope values. Furthermore, IsoError mixing models were used to estimate the relative contributions of periphyton and seston to the invaders’ diets. Whole tissue δ13C, δ15N and δ34S analysis in L. benedeni and K. warpachowskyi imply that these sympatric, non-native mysids maintain differentiated feeding niches or resource partitioning by feeding on distinct components of the available food resources (predominantly seston by L. benedeni and periphyton by K. warpachowskyi). By contrast, the gammarids D. villosus (‘killer shrimp’) and G. roeselii exhibited no significant difference in δ13C and δ15N, indicating a considerable overlap between the dietary sources of these sympatric invaders. Feeding niche differentiation, irrespective of season or the nature of habitat invaded (lake or river), might facilitate the coexistence of invasive mysids in their ‘new’ environment by minimizing direct resource competition. The mutual interaction by the invasive gammarids, coupled with voracious behavior, could assist their success at co-invasion with serious implications for local biodiversity including the potential extinction of native species.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) in three sympatric species of larval chironomids were analyzed in a temperate eutrophic shallow lake in Japan. Markedly lower δ13C values were reported in Chironomus plumosus (?51.2 ‰) and Tanypus sp. (?43.5 ‰) than those in photoautotrophic carbon sources [particulate organic matter (POM) and sediment]. There were positive correlations between δ13C and δ15N in the two chironomid species. These results indicated that they assimilated carbon derived from biogenic methane by exploiting methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB). In contrast, Propsilocerus akamusi exhibited similar δ13C values to those of POM or sediment. A δ13C-based isotope mixing model was used to estimate the dietary contributions of MOB to each chironomid species. The mean contributions ranged from 11 to 15 % in C. plumosus, 13 to 19 % in Tanypus sp., but only up to 5 % in P. akamusi. In an aquarium, we observed that individuals of C. plumosus and Tanypus sp., which exhibited low δ13C values, built U-shaped larval tubes in the sediment, and an oxidized layer developed around these tubes. Propsilocerus akamusi did not exhibit this behavior. These results suggest that tube building may provide larval chironomids with greater access to methane-derived carbon through increased opportunities to feed on MOB.  相似文献

Stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) of plants increase linearly from ground to canopy. Accordingly, I used δ13C for estimating strata use of fig-eating bats. Data suggest that, overall, bats commuted at lower but fed at higher forest strata, and that small bats foraged at lower forest strata than large bats.  相似文献
