Juvenile polar cod (Boreogadus saida) are often found in close association with sea ice and represent an important trophic link in the Arctic food web. However, the proportional contribution of sea ice algal production via the sympagic food web to the diet of polar cod is unknown. To estimate the proportional contribution of fatty acids (FAs) from sea ice-derived particulate organic matter (i-POM) to the diet of juvenile polar cod, we used FA profiling and compound-specific stable carbon isotope analysis of individual FAs from juvenile polar cod collected from three regions in the Beaufort Sea. The δ13C values of the FAs 14:0, 16:4n-1, 18:0, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 in the polar cod were found to most strongly resemble pelagic POM rather than i-POM. Results from isotope-mixing models using diatom FA markers indicated that the proportional contribution of FAs from i-POM to juvenile polar cod was ≤2 %, which suggests that juvenile polar cod had not sourced their FAs from i-POM. Thus, changes in sea ice coverage due to environmental change may not affect juvenile polar cod in regard to nutrients such as FAs but may still affect their populations by reducing critical shelter from predators.  相似文献

The Okavango River, in semi-arid northwestern Botswana, flows for over 400 km in a pristine wetland developed on a large (>22,000 km2) alluvial fan (Okavango Delta). An annual flood pulse inundates the floodplains of the wetlands and travels across the Delta in 4–6 months. In this study, we assess the effects of long hydraulic residence time, variable hydrologic interaction between river–floodplain–wetland and evapotranspiration on carbon cycling. We measured dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations and stable carbon isotopes of DIC (δ13CDIC) from river water when the Delta was not flooded (low water) and during flooding (high water). During low water, the average DIC concentration was 31 % higher and the δ13CDIC 2.1 ‰ more enriched compared to high water. In the lower Delta with seasonally flooded wetlands, the average DIC concentration increased by 70 % during low water and by 331 % during high water compared to the Panhandle with permanently flooded wetlands. The increasing DIC concentration downriver is mostly due to evapoconcentration from transpiration and evaporation with increased transit time. The average δ13CDIC between low and high water decreased by 3.7 ‰ in the permanently flooded reaches compared to an increase of 1.6 ‰ in the seasonally flooded reaches. The lower δ13CDIC during high water in the permanently flooded reaches suggest that DIC influx from the floodplain-wetland affects river’s DIC cycling. In contrast, higher river channel elevations relative to the wetlands along seasonal flooded reaches limit hydrologic interaction and DIC cycling occurs mostly by water column processes and river-atmospheric exchange. We conclude that river-wetlands interaction and evapoconcentration are important factors controlling carbon cycling in the Okavango Delta.  相似文献

Biogeochemical dynamics under seasonal ice cover were investigated in the shallow (<10 m) water column of highly productive Georgetown Lake, western Montana, USA. This high altitude (1,800 m) reservoir is well-mixed in summer, but becomes strongly stratified under ice cover (mid-November–mid-May). A rapid drop in dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and rise in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration was observed after the onset of ice, with a corresponding increase in δ18O-DO and decrease in δ13C-DIC, likely caused by respiration (R) of organic carbon. Photosynthesis/respiration ratios (P/R) estimated from simultaneous measurement of DO and δ18O-DO were near unity prior to ice formation but then systematically decreased with time and depth in the lake under ice cover. P/R in the water column was higher at a shallower monitoring site compared to a deeper site near the dam outlet, which may have been important for over-winter survival of salmonids. By March, the bottom 3 m of the water column at both sites was anoxic, with the bottom 1 m being euxinic. Elevated concentrations of dissolved sulfide, ammonium, phosphate, Fe2+, and Mn2+ in deep water suggest coupling of organic carbon degradation with reduction of a number of electron acceptors (e.g., Fe3+, \({\text{NO}}_{3}^{ - } ,\;{\text{SO}}_{4}^{2 - }\) ). The concentrations and δ34S values of H2S in the deep water and \({\text{SO}}_{4}^{2 - }\) in the shallow water were similar, indicating near-complete reduction of sulfate in the euxinic zone. Late in the winter, an influx of isotopically heavy DIC was noted in the deep water coincident with a buildup of dissolved CH4 to concentrations >1 mM. These trends are attributed to acetoclastic methanogenesis in the benthic sediments. This pool of dissolved CH4 was likely released from the lake to the atmosphere during spring ice-off and lake turnover.  相似文献

Tooth enamel apatite carbonate carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of modern kangaroos (Macropus spp.) collected on a 900-km latitudinal transect spanning a C3–C4 transition zone were analysed to create a reference set for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction in southern Australia. The carbon isotope composition of enamel carbonate reflects the proportional intake of C3 and C4 vegetation, and its oxygen isotope composition reflects that of ingested water. Tooth enamel forms incrementally, recording dietary and environmental changes during mineralisation. Analyses show only weak correlations between climate records and latitudinal changes in δ13C and δ18O. No species achieved the δ13C values (~?1.0 ‰) expected for 100 % C4 grazing diets; kangaroos at low latitudes that are classified as feeding primarily on C4 grasses (grazers) have δ13C of up to ?3.5 ‰. In these areas, δ13C below ?12 ‰ suggests a 100 % C3 grass and/or leafy plant (browse) diet while animals from higher latitude have lower δ13C. Animals from semi-arid areas have δ18O of 34–40 ‰, while grazers from temperate areas have lower values (~28–30 ‰). Three patterns with implications for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction emerge: (1) all species in semi-arid areas regularly browse to supplement limited grass resources; (2) all species within an environmental zone have similar carbon and oxygen isotope compositions, meaning data from different kangaroo species can be pooled for palaeoenvironmental investigations; (3) relatively small regional environmental differences can be distinguished when δ13C and δ18O data are used together. These data demonstrate that diet–isotope and climate–isotope relationships should be evaluated in modern ecosystems before application to the regional fossil record.  相似文献

Photosynthetic activity in carbonate‐rich benthic microbial mats located in saline, alkaline lakes on the Cariboo Plateau, B.C. resulted in pCO2 below equilibrium and δ13CDIC values up to +6.0‰ above predicted carbon dioxide (CO2) equilibrium values, representing a biosignature of photosynthesis. Mat‐associated δ13Ccarb values ranged from ~4 to 8‰ within any individual lake, with observations of both enrichments (up to 3.8‰) and depletions (up to 11.6‰) relative to the concurrent dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Seasonal and annual variations in δ13C values reflected the balance between photosynthetic 13C‐enrichment and heterotrophic inputs of 13C‐depleted DIC. Mat microelectrode profiles identified oxic zones where δ13Ccarb was within 0.2‰ of surface DIC overlying anoxic zones associated with sulphate reduction where δ13Ccarb was depleted by up to 5‰ relative to surface DIC reflecting inputs of 13C‐depleted DIC. δ13C values of sulphate reducing bacteria biomarker phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) were depleted relative to the bulk organic matter by ~4‰, consistent with heterotrophic synthesis, while the majority of PLFA had larger offsets consistent with autotrophy. Mean δ13Corg values ranged from ?18.7 ± 0.1 to ?25.3 ± 1.0‰ with mean Δ13Cinorg‐org values ranging from 21.1 to 24.2‰, consistent with non‐CO2‐limited photosynthesis, suggesting that Precambrian δ13Corg values of ~?26‰ do not necessitate higher atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Rather, it is likely that the high DIC and carbonate content of these systems provide a non‐limiting carbon source allowing for expression of large photosynthetic offsets, in contrast to the smaller offsets observed in saline, organic‐rich and hot spring microbial mats.  相似文献

Knowledge on the relative effects of biological activity and precipitation/dissolution of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in influencing the air-ice CO2 exchange in sea-ice-covered season is currently lacking. Furthermore, the spatial and temporal occurrence of CaCO3 and other biogeochemical parameters in sea ice are still not well described. Here we investigated autotrophic and heterotrophic activity as well as the precipitation/dissolution of CaCO3 in subarctic sea ice in South West Greenland. Integrated over the entire ice season (71 days), the sea ice was net autotrophic with a net carbon fixation of 56 mg C m?2, derived from a sea-ice-related gross primary production of 153 mg C m?2 and a bacterial carbon demand of 97 mg C m?2. Primary production contributed only marginally to the TCO2 depletion of the sea ice (7–25 %), which was mainly controlled by physical export by brine drainage and CaCO3 precipitation. The net biological production could only explain 4 % of this sea-ice-driven CO2 uptake. Abiotic processes contributed to an air-sea CO2 uptake of 1.5 mmol m?2 sea ice day?1, and dissolution of CaCO3 increased the air-sea CO2 uptake by 36 % compared to a theoretical estimate of melting CaCO3-free sea ice. There was a considerable spatial and temporal variability of CaCO3 and the other biogeochemical parameters measured (dissolved organic and inorganic nutrients).  相似文献

Despite being an essential part of the marine food web during periods of ice cover, sea ice algae have not been studied in any detail in the Bering Sea. In this study, we investigated the diversity, abundance and ultimate fate of ice algae in the Bering Sea using sea ice, water and sub-ice sediment trap samples collected during two spring periods in 2008 and 2009: ice growth (March–mid-April) and ice melt (mid-April–May). The total ice algal species inventory included 68 species, dominated by typical Arctic ice algal diatom taxa. Only three species were determined from the water samples; we interpret the strong overlap in species as seeding of algal cells from the sea ice. Algal abundances in the ice exceeded 107 cells l?1 in the bottom 2-cm layer and were on average three orders of magnitude higher than in the water column. The vertical flux of algal cells beneath the ice during the period of ice melt (>108 cells m?2 day?1) exceeded export during the ice growth period by one order of magnitude; the vertical flux during both periods can only be sustained by the release of algae from the ice. Differences in the relative species proportions of algae among sample types indicated that the fate of the released ice algae was species specific, with some taxa contributing to seeding in the water column, while other taxa were preferentially exported.  相似文献

Marine sediments of the Ross Sea, Antarctica, harbor microbial communities that play a significant role in the decomposition, mineralization, and recycling of organic carbon (OC). In this study, the cell densities within a 153‐cm sediment core from the Ross Sea were estimated based on microbial phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) concentrations and acridine orange direct cell counts. The resulting densities were as high as 1.7 × 107 cells mL?1 in the top ten centimeters of sediments. These densities are lower than those calculated for most near‐shore sites but consistent with deep‐sea locations with comparable sedimentation rates. The δ13C measurements of PLFAs and sedimentary and dissolved carbon sources, in combination with ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene pyrosequencing, were used to infer microbial metabolic pathways. The δ13C values of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in porewaters ranged downcore from ?2.5‰ to ?3.7‰, while δ13C values for the corresponding sedimentary particulate OC (POC) varied from ?26.2‰ to ?23.1‰. The δ13C values of PLFAs ranged between ?29‰ and ?35‰ throughout the sediment core, consistent with a microbial community dominated by heterotrophs. The SSU rRNA gene pyrosequencing revealed that members of this microbial community were dominated by β‐, δ‐, and γ‐Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes. Among the sequenced organisms, many appear to be related to known heterotrophs that utilize OC sources such as amino acids, oligosaccharides, and lactose, consistent with our interpretation from δ13CPLFA analysis. Integrating phospholipids analyses with porewater chemistry, δ13CDIC and δ13CPOC values and SSU rRNA gene sequences provides a more comprehensive understanding of microbial communities and carbon cycling in marine sediments, including those of this unique ice shelf environment.  相似文献

Most studies on Arctic food webs have neglected microphytobenthos as a potential food source because we currently lack robust measurements of δ13C values for microphytobenthos from this environment. As a result, the role of microphytobenthos in high latitude marine food webs is not well understood. We combined field measurements of the concentration of aqueous carbon dioxide and the stable carbon isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) from bottom water in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas with a set of stable carbon isotopic fractionation factors reflecting differences in algal taxonomy and physiology to estimate the stable carbon isotope composition of microphytobenthos-derived total organic carbon (δ13Cp). The δ13Cp for Phaeodactylum tricornutum, a pennate diatom likely to be a dominant microphytobenthos taxon, was estimated to be ?23.9 ± 0.4 ‰ as compared to a centric diatom (Porosira glacialis, δ13Cp = ?20.0 ± 1.6 ‰) and a marine haptophyte (Emiliana huxleyi, δ13Cp = ?22.7 ± 0.5 ‰) at a growth rate (µ) of 0.1 divisions per day (d?1). δ13Cp values increased by ~2.5 ‰ when µ increased from 0.1 to a maximum growth rate of 1.4 d?1. We compared our estimates of δ13Cp values for microphytobenthos with published measurements for other carbon sources in the Arctic and sub-Arctic. We found that microphytobenthos values overlapped with pelagic sources, yet differed from riverine and ice-derived carbon sources. These model results provide valuable insight into the range of possible isotopic values for microphytobenthos from this region, but we remain cautious in regard to the conclusiveness of these findings given the paucity of field measurements currently available for model validation.  相似文献

Denitrification activity and oxygen dynamics in Arctic sea ice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Denitrification and oxygen dynamics were investigated in the sea ice of Franklin Bay (70°N), Canada. These investigations were complemented with measurements of denitrification rates in sea ice from different parts of the Arctic (69°N–85°N). Potential for bacterial denitrification activity (5–194 μmol N m−2 day−1) and anammox activity (3–5 μmol N m−2 day−1) in melt water from both first-year and multi-year sea ice was found. These values correspond to 27 and 7%, respectively, of the benthic denitrification and anammox activities in Arctic sediments. Although we report only potential denitrification and anammox rates, we present several indications that active denitrification in sea ice may occur in Franklin Bay (and elsewhere): (1) despite sea ice-algal primary production in the lower sea ice layers, heterotrophic activity resulted in net oxygen consumption in the sea ice of 1–3 μmol l−1 sea ice per day at in situ light conditions, suggesting that O2 depletion may occur prior to the spring bloom. (2) The ample organic carbon (DOC) and NO3 present in sea ice may support an active denitrification population. (3) Measurements of O2 conditions in melted sea ice cores showed very low bulk concentrations, and in some cases anoxic conditions prevailed. (4) Laboratory studies using planar optodes for measuring the high-resolution two-dimensional O2 distributions in sea ice confirmed the very dynamic and heterogeneous O2 distribution in sea ice, displaying a mosaic of microsites of high and low O2 concentrations. Brine enclosures and channels were strongly O2 depleted in actively melting sea ice, and anoxic conditions in parts of the brine system would favour anaerobic processes.  相似文献

We report silicon isotopic composition (δ30Si vs. NBS28) in Arctic sea ice, based on sampling of silicic acid from both brine and seawater in a small Greenlandic bay in March 2010. Our measurements show that just before the productive period, δ30Si of sea-ice brine similar to δ30Si of the underlying seawater. Hence, there is no Si isotopic fractionation during sea-ice growth by physical processes such as brine convection. This finding brings credit and support to the conclusions of previous work on the impact of biogenic processes on sea ice δ30Si: any δ30Si change results from a combination of biogenic silica production and dissolution. We use this insight to interpret data from an earlier study of sea-ice δ30Si in Antarctic pack ice that show a large accumulation of biogenic silica. Based on these data, we estimate a significant contribution of biogenic silica dissolution (D) to production (P), with a D:P ratio between 0.4 and 0.9. This finding has significant implications for the understanding and parameterization of the sea ice Si-biogeochemical cycle, i.e. previous studies assumed little or no biogenic silica dissolution in sea ice.  相似文献

How the abundant pelagic life of the Southern Ocean survives winter darkness, when the sea is covered by pack ice and phytoplankton production is nearly zero, is poorly understood. Ice‐associated (“sympagic”) microalgae could serve as a high‐quality carbon source during winter, but their significance in the food web is so far unquantified. To better understand the importance of ice algae‐produced carbon for the overwintering of Antarctic organisms, we investigated fatty acid (FA) and stable isotope compositions of 10 zooplankton species, and their potential sympagic and pelagic carbon sources. FA‐specific carbon stable isotope compositions were used in stable isotope mixing models to quantify the contribution of ice algae‐produced carbon (αIce) to the body carbon of each species. Mean αIce estimates ranged from 4% to 67%, with large variations between species and depending on the FA used for the modelling. Integrating the αIce estimates from all models, the sympagic amphipod Eusirus laticarpus was the most dependent on ice algal carbon (αIce: 54%–67%), and the salp Salpa thompsoni showed the least dependency on ice algal carbon (αIce: 8%–40%). Differences in αIce estimates between FAs associated with short‐term vs. long‐term lipid pools suggested an increasing importance of ice algal carbon for many species as the winter season progressed. In the abundant winter‐active copepod Calanus propinquus, mean αIce reached more than 50% in late winter. The trophic carbon flux from ice algae into this copepod was between 3 and 5 mg C m?2 day?1. This indicates that copepods and other ice‐dependent zooplankton species transfer significant amounts of carbon from ice algae into the pelagic system, where it fuels the food web, the biological carbon pump and elemental cycling. Understanding the role of ice algae‐produced carbon in these processes will be the key to predictions of the impact of future sea ice decline on Antarctic ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Climate-mediated changes in the phenology of Arctic sea ice and primary production may alter benthic food webs that sustain populations of Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) and bearded seals (Erignathus barbatus). Interspecific resource competition could place an additional strain on ice-associated marine mammals already facing loss of sea ice habitat. Using fatty acid (FA) profiles, FA trophic markers, and FA stable carbon isotope analyses, we found that walruses and bearded seals partitioned food resources in 2009–2011. Interspecific differences in FA profiles were largely driven by variation in non-methylene FAs, which are markers of benthic invertebrate prey taxa, indicating varying consumption of specific benthic prey. We used Bayesian multi-source FA stable isotope mixing models to estimate the proportional contributions of particulate organic matter (POM) from sympagic (ice algal), pelagic, and benthic sources to these apex predators. Proportional contributions of FAs to walruses and bearded seals from benthic POM sources were high [44 (17–67)% and 62 (38–83)%, respectively] relative to other sources of POM. Walruses also obtained considerable contributions of FAs from pelagic POM sources [51 (32–73)%]. Comparison of δ13C values of algal FAs from walruses and bearded seals to those from benthic prey from different feeding groups from the Chukchi and Bering seas revealed that different trophic pathways sustained walruses and bearded seals. Our findings suggest that (1) resource partitioning may mitigate interspecific competition, and (2) climate change impacts on Arctic food webs may elicit species-specific responses in these high trophic level consumers.  相似文献

The Ludfordian (Upper Silurian) succession in Podolia, western Ukraine, represents a Silurian carbonate platform developed in an epicontinental sea on the shelf of the paleocontinent of Baltica. Coeval deposits throughout this basin record a positive stable carbon isotope excursion known as the Lau excursion. The record of this excursion in Podolia exhibits an unusual amplitude from highly positive (+6.9 ‰) to highly negative (?5.0 ‰) δ13Ccarb values. In order to link δ13Ccarb development with facies, five sections in the Zbruch River Valley were examined, providing microfacies characterization and revised definitions of the Isakivtsy, Prygorodok, and Varnytsya Formations. The Isakivtsy Fm. is developed as dolosparite replacing originally bioclastic limestone. The Prygorodok Fm., recording strongly depleted (down to ?10.53 ‰) to near zero (0.12 ‰) δ13Ccarb values is developed as laminated, organic-rich dolomicrite with metabentonite and quartz siltstone beds. The Varnytsya Fm. is characterized by peritidal deposition with consistent, slightly negative δ13Ccarb values (?0.57 to ?3.20 ‰). It is proposed that dolomitization of the Isakivtsy Fm. is associated with a sequence boundary and erosional surface. The overlying Prygorodok Fm. represents the proximal part of a TST deposited in restricted and laterally extremely variable environments dominated by microbial carbonate production. The transition to the overlying Varnytsya Fm. facies is marked by a maximum flooding surface. The SB and MFS are potentially correlative within the basin and support a global rapid sea-level fall previously proposed for this interval. The interpretation of the Prygorodok Fm. as coastal lake deposits may explain the unusual δ13Ccarb values and constitute one of the few records of this type of environment identified in the early Paleozoic.  相似文献

We conducted a comparative analysis of the fatty acid (FA) composition and the ratios of stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) in soft tissues of ten species of bivalve mollusks collected simultaneously on adjacent biotopes in shallow Vostok Bay (the Sea of Japan). Comparison of the FA composition of the lipids of digestive gland and all soft tissues showed that the percentages of C16 and C18 marker FAs were greater in the digestive gland and the levels of marker C20 and C22 FAs were, in most cases, higher in soft tissues. According to the results of cluster analysis and principal component analysis, four groups of samples were identified with a similarity of the FA composition of more than 80% within groups. The carbon stableisotope ratios varied within very wide limits in the studied species of bivalves; the range of δ13C variations was 8.1‰. The range of δ15N variations was much smaller, 2.5‰. Two pairs of species of mollusks (Saxidomus purpurataProtothaca euglypta and P. jedoensisDiplodonta semiasperoides) did not differ in the values of both δ15N and δ13C, the remaining species differed in at least one of these parameters. The greatest similarity of the FA composition and stable-isotope ratios was found in species that inhabit similar substrates, except Macoma irus and D. semiasperoides. Particularly marked differences in the FA composition and stable-isotope ratios were found between a filter-/surface deposit-feeder M. irus and filter-feeders Arca boucardi and Mytilus coruscus that live next to this species.  相似文献

The Arctic is undergoing unprecedented environmental change. Rapid warming, decline in sea ice extent, increase in riverine input, ocean acidification and changes in primary productivity are creating a crucible for multiple concurrent environmental stressors, with unknown consequences for the entire arctic ecosystem. Here, we synthesized 30 years of data on the stable carbon isotope (δ13C) signatures in dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13C‐DIC; 1977–2014), marine and riverine particulate organic carbon (δ13C‐POC; 1986–2013) and tissues of marine mammals in the Arctic. δ13C values in consumers can change as a result of environmentally driven variation in the δ13C values at the base of the food web or alteration in the trophic structure, thus providing a method to assess the sensitivity of food webs to environmental change. Our synthesis reveals a spatially heterogeneous and temporally evolving δ13C baseline, with spatial gradients in the δ13C‐POC values between arctic shelves and arctic basins likely driven by differences in productivity and riverine and coastal influence. We report a decline in δ13C‐DIC values (?0.011‰ per year) in the Arctic, reflecting increasing anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Arctic Ocean (i.e. Suess effect), which is larger than predicted. The larger decline in δ13C‐POC values and δ13C in arctic marine mammals reflects the anthropogenic CO2 signal as well as the influence of a changing arctic environment. Combining the influence of changing sea ice conditions and isotopic fractionation by phytoplankton, we explain the decadal decline in δ13C‐POC values in the Arctic Ocean and partially explain the δ13C values in marine mammals with consideration of time‐varying integration of δ13C values. The response of the arctic ecosystem to ongoing environmental change is stronger than we would predict theoretically, which has tremendous implications for the study of food webs in the rapidly changing Arctic Ocean.  相似文献

Organic matter produced by the sea ice microbial community (SIMCo) is an important link between sea ice dynamics and secondary production in near‐shore food webs of Antarctica. Sea ice conditions in McMurdo Sound were quantified from time series of MODIS satellite images for Sept. 1 through Feb. 28 of 2007–2015. A predictable sea ice persistence gradient along the length of the Sound and evidence for a distinct change in sea ice dynamics in 2011 were observed. We used stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) of SIMCo, suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) and shallow water (10–20 m) macroinvertebrates to reveal patterns in trophic structure of, and incorporation of organic matter from SIMCo into, benthic communities at eight sites distributed along the sea ice persistence gradient. Mass‐balance analysis revealed distinct trophic architecture among communities and large fluxes of SIMCo into the near‐shore food web, with the estimates ranging from 2 to 84% of organic matter derived from SIMCo for individual species. Analysis of patterns in density, and biomass of macroinvertebrate communities among sites allowed us to model net incorporation of organic matter from SIMCo, in terms of biomass per unit area (g/m2), into benthic communities. Here, organic matter derived from SIMCo supported 39 to 71 per cent of total biomass. Furthermore, for six species, we observed declines in contribution of SIMCo between years with persistent sea ice (2008–2009) and years with extensive sea ice breakout (2012–2015). Our data demonstrate the vital role of SIMCo in ecosystem function in Antarctica and strong linkages between sea ice dynamics and near‐shore secondary productivity. These results have important implications for our understanding of how benthic communities will respond to changes in sea ice dynamics associated with climate change and highlight the important role of shallow water macroinvertebrate communities as sentinels of change for the Antarctic marine ecosystem.  相似文献

We investigated climate–growth relationships (in terms of tree-ring width, basal area increment (BAI), and tree-ring δ13C signatures) of Quercus petraea in Central Europe (Luxembourg). Tree responses were assessed for 160 years and compared for sites with contrasting water supply (i.e. Cambisols vs. Regosols with 175 and 42 mm available water capacity, respectively). Oak trees displayed very low climate sensitivity, and climatic variables explained only 24 and 21 % of variance in tree-ring width (TRW) (Cambisol and Regosol sites, respectively). Contrary to our expectations, site-related differences in growth responses (i.e. BAI, δ13C signatures) to climate shifts were not significant. This finding suggests a high plasticity of oak trees in the study area. Despite a distinct growth depression found for all trees in the decade 1988–1997 (attributable to increasing annual mean temperatures by 1.1 °C), oak trees completely recovered in subsequent years. This indicates a high resilience of sessile oak to climate change. Shifts in δ13Ccorr signatures were mainly affected by temperature, and peaks in δ13Ccorr values (corrected for the anthropogenic increase in atmospheric CO2) coincided with decadal maximum temperatures. Correlations between δ13C signatures and TRW (mainly affected by precipitation) were not significant. This finding suggests that wood growth often was disconnected from carbon assimilation (e.g. due to carbon storage in the trunk or allocation to seeds). Since the selection of drought-resistant tree species gains importance within the context of adaptive forest management strategies, Q. petraea proves to be an adaptive tree species in Central Europe’s forests under shifting climatic conditions.  相似文献

Bacterial carbon demand, an important component of ecosystem dynamics in polar waters and sea ice, is a function of both bacterial production (BP) and respiration (BR). BP has been found to be generally higher in sea ice than underlying waters, but rates of BR and bacterial growth efficiency (BGE) are poorly characterized in sea ice. Using melted ice core incubations, community respiration (CR), BP, and bacterial abundance (BA) were studied in sea ice and at the ice–water interface (IWI) in the Western Canadian Arctic during the spring and summer 2008. CR was converted to BR empirically. BP increased over the season and was on average 22 times higher in sea ice as compared with the IWI. Rates in ice samples were highly variable ranging from 0.2 to 18.3 μg C l−1 d−1. BR was also higher in ice and on average ~10 times higher than BP but was less variable ranging from 2.39 to 22.5 μg C l−1 d−1. Given the high variability in BP and the relatively more stable rates of BR, BP was the main driver of estimated BGE (r = 0.97, < 0.0001). We conclude that microbial respiration can consume a significant proportion of primary production in sea ice and may play an important role in biogenic CO2 fluxes between the sea ice and atmosphere.  相似文献

In this study, components of the food-web in Macao wetlands were quantified using stable isotope ratio techniques based on carbon and nitrogen values. The δ13C and δ15N values of particulate organic matter (δ13CPOM and δ15NPOM, respectively) ranged from ?30.64 ± 1.0 to ?28.1 ± 0.7 ‰, and from ?1.11 ± 0.8 to 3.98 ± 0.7 ‰, respectively. The δ13C values of consumer species ranged from ?33.94 to ?16.92 ‰, showing a wide range from lower values in a freshwater lake and inner bay to higher values in a mangrove forest. The distinct dietary habits of consumer species and the location-specific food source composition were the main factors affecting the δ13C values. The consumer 15N-isotope enrichment values suggested that there were three trophic levels; primary, secondary, and tertiary. The primary consumer trophic level was represented by freshwater herbivorous gastropods, filter-feeding bivalves, and plankton-feeding fish, with a mean δ15N value of 5.052 ‰. The secondary consumer level included four deposit-feeding fish species distributed in Fai Chi Kei Bay and deposit-feeding gastropods in the Lotus Flower Bridge flat, with a mean δ15N value of 6.794 ‰. The tertiary consumers group consisted of four crab species, one shrimp species, and four fish species in the Lotus Flower Bridge Flat, with a mean δ15N value of 13.473 ‰. Their diet mainly comprised organic debris, bottom fauna, and rotten animal tissues. This study confirms the applicability of the isotopic approach in food web studies.  相似文献
