In the presence of ethylene, which enhances carnation flower senescence, carbohydrates contribute to ovary growth not only from the stem and calyx but also from the petals. With silver thiosulphate and ethanol treatments which delay flower senescence, the petals remain the active sink and ovary development is suppressed. Ethylene stimulated chloroplast development in the ovary wall. However, the calyx plus stem of all treatments showed the greater photosynthetic ability and transported a major portion of the synthesised products to the ovary.  相似文献

Although the physiological and molecular mechanisms of flower development and senescence have been extensively investigated, a whole-flower partitioning study of mineral concentrations has not been carried out. In this work, the distribution of sucrose, total reducing sugars, dry and fresh weight and macro and micronutrients were analysed in Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. petals, stylestigma including stamens and ovary at different developmental stages (bud, open and senescent flowers). Total reducing sugars showed the highest value in petals of bud flowers, then fell during the later stages of flower development whereas sucrose showed the highest value in petals of senescent flowers. In petals, nitrogen and phosphorus content increased during flower opening, then nitrogen level decreased in senescent flowers. The calcium, phosphorus and boron concentrations were highest in ovary tissues whatever the developmental stage. Overall, the data presented suggests that the high level of total reducing sugars prior the onset of flower opening contributes to support petal cells expansion, while the high amount of sucrose at the time of petal wilting may be viewed as a result of senescence. Furthermore, this study discusses how the accumulation of particular mineral nutrients can be considered in a tissue specific manner for the activation of processes directly connected with reproduction.  相似文献

In olive (Olea europaea L.), the formation of functionally staminate flowers rather than fully functional hermaphrodites is one of the major factors limiting fruit set, as flowers with aborted pistils are incapable of producing fruit. Studies conducted on various angiosperm species have shown a correlation between flower abortion and starch content. Thus, it is important to know if starch content plays a role in regulating pistil development in olive and if so, what mechanism regulates starch distribution. Cyto-histological observations of staminate and hermaphrodite olive flowers show that pistil development in staminate flowers is interrupted after the differentiation of the megaspore mother cell. At that stage, starch grains were only detected in the ovary, style and stigma of the hermaphrodite flowers. No starch was observed in the pistils of the staminate flowers. This finding suggests a tight correlation between starch content and pistil development. The secondary origin of starch within the flower is indicated by low chlorophyll content in the gynoecium, undetectable Rubisco activity in the pistils of these two kinds of flowers and by the ultrastructure of the plastids observed by transmission electron microscope analysis. The plastids have few thylakoid membranes and grana and in the staminate flowers appeared very similar to proplastids. Considering differences in starch content between staminate and hermaphrodite flowers and the secondary origin of the starch, differences in pistil development in the staminate and hermaphrodite flowers could be related to differences in the sink strength of these two types of flowers.  相似文献

Aims Viola philippica is a species with a typical chasmogamous-cleistogamous (CH-CL) mixed breeding system. It provides a flower model system to investigate floral organs development under different photoperiods. Morphological changes of intermediate cleistogamous (inCL) flowers have been observed, the trends in variation of changes from CH flowers to CL flowers or from CL flowers to CH flowers have been analyzed, the localized effects of poorly developed stamens and petals in CL and inCL flowers have been identified. This research provided morphology and structural changes with implication for the evolutionary significance of the dimorphic flower formation for further study in dimorphic flower development. Methods We used methods of anatomy and structural analysis to observe the morphological structures of flowers under different photoperiods.Important findings Photoperiod played an important role in the development of CH and CL flowers in V. philippica. Under short-day light and intermediate-day light, both CH and inCL flowers developed simultaneously. Most of the floral buds were CH flowers under a photoperiod of short-day light, but most of the floral buds were inCL flowers under mid-day light. Complete CL flowers formed under long-day lights. However, there were a series of transitional types in the number and morphology of stamens and petals among inCL flowers, including five stamens with three petals related to CH flowers and two stamens with one petal related to CL flowers. The former type was dominant under short-day light conditions, and the latter type was dominant under mid-day light. Further more, there were localized effects in stamen and petal development for CL and inCL flowers. The development of ventral lower petal (corresponding to the lower petal with spur of CH flower) and the adjacent two stamens in inCL flowers were best, and the back petal was similar to that of CL flowers, an organ primordium structure. The adjacent stamens with the back petals tended to be poorly developed. In extreme cases, these stamens in inCL flowers had no pollen sac, only a membranous appendage or even a primordium structure. When the plants with CL or CH flowers were placed under short-day light or long-day light, the newly induced flowers all showed a series of inCL flower types, finally the CL flowers transformed into CH flowers, and the CH flowers transformed into CL flowers. This result indicates the gradual effects of different photoperiods on dimorphic flowers development of V. philippica. A long photoperiod could inhibit the development of partial stamens and petals, and a short photoperiod could prevent the suppression of long-day light and promote the development of stamens and petals.  相似文献

Abscission of pepper flowers is enhanced under conditions oflow light and high temperature. Our study shows that pepperflowers accumulate assimilates, particularly in the ovary, duringthe day time, and accumulate starch, which is then metabolizedin the subsequent dark period. With the exception of the petals, the ovary contains the highest total amounts of sugars and starch, compared with other flower parts and contains the highest totalactivity, as well as activity calculated on fresh mass basis,of sucrose synthase, in accordance with the role of this enzymein starch biosynthesis. Low light intensity or leaf removaldecreased sugar accumulation in the flower and subsequentlycaused flower abscission. The threshold of light intensity fordaily sugar accumulation in the sink leaves was much lower thanin flowers, resulting in higher daytime accumulation of sugarsin the sink leaves than in the adjacent flower buds under anylight intensity, suggesting a competition for assimilates betweenthese organs. Flowers of bell pepper cv. ‘Maor’and ‘899’ (sensitive to abscission) accumulatedless soluble sugars and starch under shade than the flowersof bell pepper cv. ‘Mazurka’ and of paprika cv.‘Lehava’ (less sensitive). The results suggest thatthe flower capacity to accumulate sugars and starch during theday is an important factor in determining flower retention andfruit set. The effects of postharvest pretreatments on vase life, keeping quality and carbohydrate concentrations in cut sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus L.) flowers were investigated. Compared to the control, all treatments promoted floret quality and extended longevity. The cut flowers held in the solution containing sucrose + 8-hydroxyquinoline (Suc+HQS) was more effective in promoting absorption rate, achieved greater maximum fresh mass, had better water balance for a longer period, extended the vase life (up to 17 d), and delayed degradation of chlorophylls. The same treatment also enhanced the concentration of soluble carbohydrates in the petals and stems and leaf chlorophyll (Chl) content, whereas it was lowest in silver thiosulphate (STS) treatment. However, concentrations of anthocyanin in the petals were higher for treatment with sucrose or STS plus sucrose than in control or STS alone treatments. Our results suggest that pulse treatment with HQS plus sucrose for 12 h is the most effective for improving pigmentation and use as a commercial cut flower preservative solution to delay flower senescence, enhance quality, and prolong the vase life of sweet pea. The results also showed that soluble carbohydrate concentration in petals and stems is an important factor in determining the vase life of sweet pea flowers.  相似文献

Twenty plants with various phenotypic abnormalities to the flowerswere selected from very large populations of Thryptomene calycinain the Grampian and Black Ranges. Most of these had impairedreproductive function. Normal flowers were epigynous with fivesepals, five petals, five anthers, a single style and two anatropousovules. The mutants were two partially male sterile, tetraploidplants with large flowers, one of which occasionally producedadditional flowers from the leaf axils with peduncles as wellas pedicels; one plant which produced a proportion of hexapetaloidflowers with six stamens; three gross mutants with fleshy, bracteoidpointed petals and sepals, no stamens, vestigial styles andstigmas, exposed ovules and no inferior ovary; one plant withfleshly, bracteoid pointed sepals, vestigial style and stigmabut with exposed ovular structures replaced by four to fivesterile ovules generally inside an abnormal ovary; two plantswith reduced ovary diameter and sterile ovules, shortened style, five reduced sepals and petals and five to eight anthers; threeanthocyanin-free plants; three plants with pink sepals; twoplants with half-sized flowers which produced a proportion offasciated stems; one plant which occasionally produced flowerswithout pedicels which virtually resulted in organs which wereleaf-flower composites; two plants which produced sepals andpetals which contained chlorophyll and prematurely senesced, and had partial substitution of petals by anthers.Copyright1993, 1999 Academic Press Thryptomene calycina, Myrtaceae, Victorian lace flower, floral mutations, mutants, homeotic, meristic, tetraploid, fasciation, male sterility, cut flowers  相似文献

The role of ethylene in the control of senescence of both petals and unpollinated carpels of pea was investigated. An increase in ethylene production accompanied senescence, and the inhibitors of ethylene action were effective in delaying senescence symptoms in different flower verticils. Pollination did not seem to trigger the senescence syndrome in the corolla as deduced from the observation that petals from pollinated and unpollinated flowers and from flowers whose carpels had been removed senesced at the same time. A cDNA clone encoding a putative ethylene-response sensor (psERS) was isolated from pea flowers, and the pattern of expression of its mRNA was studied during development and senescence of different flower tissues. The levels of psERS mRNA paralleled ethylene production (and also levels of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO) mRNA) in both petals and styles. Silver thiosulfate treatments were efficient at preventing ACO and psERS mRNA induction in petals. However, the same inhibitor showed no ability to modify expression patterns in pea carpels around the anthesis stage, suggesting different controls for ethylene synthesis and sensitivity in different flower organs. Ovary starch reserves and flower development in apricot (Prunus armeniaca)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In histerant species where flowering takes place prior to leaf emergence, a flower lifespan occurs in the absence of new photoassimilates and at the expense of pre-stored reserves either in the plant as a whole or in the flower itself. In the present study, the role that the photoassimilates stored in the flowers might play in flower development from anthesis to fertilization in Prunus armeniaca L. (apricot), a histerant species, was explored. Starch content in individual flowers was measured with the help of an image analysis system. Starch content decreased from its highest value at anthesis and disappeared from the ovary 9 days later. This decrease was inversely related to an increase in ovary size and in cell number in the pericarp, suggesting an intraflower, self-supported development. This process is conserved in both pollinated and nonpollinated flowers and therefore seems to be inherent to the flower at anthesis. The onset of fruiting is preceded by the establishment of large differences among ovaries; while some experience continuous growth, others stop growing and eventually drop. Interestingly, large differences in starch content are found among flowers at anthesis. These results are discussed in terms of the possible implications of pre-stored starch in the flower supporting initial flower development.  相似文献

Methyl glucoside andmyo-inositol are present in all organs ofrose (Rosa hybridaL.). To investigate the possible role of thesecarbohydrates in the opening of cut roses, flowers with a 10,20 or 40-cm-long stem and a single flower bud (about 1.5 cmin diameter) were placed in water and flower opening and changesin sugar content in flowers and stems examined for 7 d. Thelonger the stem of the cut flower, the larger was the flowerdiameter. In stems, the concentration of carbohydrates, includingmethyl glucoside andmyo-inositol markedly decreased before floweropening. In petals, contents of glucose, methyl glucoside andmyo-inositolalso decreased before flower opening, but those of fructose, sucrose and xylose did not. When glucose and methyl glucosidewere added to the vase water (4%) flower opening was clearlypromoted; this was accompanied by an increase in methyl glucosideand fructose concentrations in petals. On the contrary,myo-inositolinhibited flower opening, and this was accompanied by an increaseinmyo-inositol and xylose concentrations in petals. These resultssuggest that methyl glucoside and/or its metabolites are transportedinto the petal cells, thereby lowering the osmotic water potentialand promoting flower opening.Myo-inositol is not readily metabolized, and exogenousmyo-inositol given at a high concentration mayact as an extracellular osmolyte, which inhibits water uptakeand flower opening.Copyright 1999 Annals of Botany Company Cut flowers, methyl glucoside,myo-inositol,Rosa hybrida, soluble carbohydrate.  相似文献

Genes directing flower development in Arabidopsis.   总被引:62,自引:30,他引:32       下载免费PDF全文
We describe the effects of four recessive homeotic mutations that specifically disrupt the development of flowers in Arabidopsis thaliana. Each of the recessive mutations affects the outcome of organ development, but not the location of organ primordia. Homeotic transformations observed are as follows. In agamous-1, stamens to petals; in apetala2-1, sepals to leaves and petals to staminoid petals; in apetala3-1, petals to sepals and stamens to carpels; in pistillata-1, petals to sepals. In addition, two of these mutations (ap2-1 and pi-1) result in loss of organs, and ag-1 causes the cells that would ordinarily form the gynoecium to differentiate as a flower. Two of the mutations are temperature-sensitive. Temperature shift experiments indicate that the wild-type AP2 gene product acts at the time of primordium initiation; the AP3 product is active later. It seems that the wild-type alleles of these four genes allow cells to determine their place in the developing flower and thus to differentiate appropriately. We propose that these genes may be involved in setting up or responding to concentric, overlapping fields within the flower primordium.  相似文献

In Cymbidium flowers emasculation by removal of the anther capand the pollinia, led to rapid colouration of the lip and advancedwilting of the petals and sepals. The ethylene production ofwhole flowers showed an emasculation-induced early peak in ethyleneevolution followed some days later by a second increase concomitantwith the wilting of the flower. In non-emasculated flowers theethylene production increased later and simultaneously withcolouration of the lip and wilting of the petals and sepals. At all stages of senescence, the contribution of the lip, petals, and sepals to the total amount of ethylene produced was negligible. Parallel to the increase in ethylene production of whole flowers,an increase in 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid (ACC) andmalonyl-ACC (MACC) in the central column and, to a lesser extent,in the ovary was observed. Also an increase in internal ethyleneconcentration was demonstrated and this, in contrast, was apparentin all the different flower parts. The activity of the ethylene-formingenzyme in lips, petals, and sepals showed an increase afteremasculation and such an effect could also be induced by treatmentof isolated lips with low concentrations of ethylene. The data indicate that senescence in Cymbidium flowers is regulatedby the central column and perhaps the ovary and that both ACCand ethylene may play a signalling role in inter-organ communication. Production of endogenous ethylene from the styles, ovary and petals of pollinated and unpollinated flowers of Dianthus caryophyllus L. was measured. The rate of ethylene production of cut, unpollinated flowers aged in water at 18°C was low until the onset of petal wilting, when a rapid surge of ethylene occurred in all tissues. The flower ethylene production was evolved mostly from the styles and petals. The bases of petals from unpollinated, senescing flowers evolved ethylene faster and sometimes earlier than the upper parts. Treatment of cut flowers with propylene, an ethylene analogue, accelerated wilting of flower petals and promoted endogenous ethylene production in all flower tissues. Pollination of intact flowers also promoted endogenous ethylene production and caused accelerated petal wilting within 2–3 days from pollination. Although the data are consistent with the hypothesis that ethylene forms a link between pollination of the style and petal wilting, in the unpollinated flower the style and petals can evolve a surge of ethylene independently of each other, about the time when the petals irreversibly wilt. The results are discussed in relation to the role of ethylene in flower senescence.  相似文献

Estimating the cost of flowering in a grapefruit tree   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of the present study is to evaluate a Citrus tree's investment in the flowering process in relation to its photoassimilate resources, as a part of its annual reproductive effort. The overall requirement for carbohydrate of a single flower of grapefruit ( Citrus paradisi Macf. cv. 'Marsh seedless') is evaluated as 8·33 × 10–3 mol C over 3 weeks. The direct cost of production of a single flower is estimated to be 5·75 × 10–3 mol C, most of which is allocated to the petals, anthers and style — organs designated to abscise. About 2·58 × 10–3 mol C is consumed by respiration not associated with growth processes. Growth respiration ( R g) occurs mostly during early stages of flower growth and development. However, the total respiration rate increases sharply during anthesis, when growth processes have almost ceased. Ethylene evolution also reaches remarkably high rates during anthesis. High temperatures increase the rate of flower respiration ( Q 10 = 2·12) but shorten the duration of flowering. A grapefruit tree may bear each year 20 000–50 000 flowers, only 0·5–2·5% of which develop into mature fruit. The amount of carbohydrate invested each year in bloom at the whole-tree level is 166–400 mol C per tree (depending on the number of flowers), amounting to 10–20% of the carbohydrate consumed for fruit growth. The overall daily demand for carbohydrate by the flowers of a grapefruit tree during anthesis may exceed the daily carbohydrate production by the leaves. High temperatures lead to a further increase in the daily demand for carbohydrate. In such cases, the management of flowering must rely on carbohydrate reserves recruited from other tree organs. The ecophysiological and evolutionary aspects of Citrus flowering are discussed.  相似文献

The application of 10–4 M GA3 to preclimacteric carnation flowers delayed senescence, climateric ethylene production reduced the rate of loss in fresh weight of intact flowers and the decrease in moisture content of the petals. The loss in flower fresh weight commenced prior to the ethylene climacteric. The increased membrane permeability which was observed when intact, control flowers were half opened, was delayed by GA3 application. This effect was only significant when GA3 was applied to young flowers. In addition to slowing down the loss in fresh mass, GA3 inhibited ethylene production by the style and stigma. The increase in ovary dry weight and chlorophyll content and the associated decrease in petal dry weight was slowed down by GA3 but not arrested, this despite reduced ethylene production by the ovary. It is proposed that a decline in endogenous gibberellin may be a correlative event associated with the onset of the senescence process in carnation flowers.

Nicotiana glauca is a tobacco species that forms flowers with carotenoid-pigmented petals, sepals, pistil, ovary and nectary tissue. The carotenoids produced are lutein, ss-carotene as well as some violaxanthin and antheraxanthin. This tobacco species was genetically modified for ketocarotenoid biosynthesis by transformation with a cyanobacterial crtO ketolase gene under the 35S CaMV promoter. In the transformants, ketocarotenoids were detected in both leaves and flowers. Although astaxanthin was not detected other ketocarotenoids such as 4'-ketolutein, echinenone, 3'-hydroxyechinenone and 4-ketozeaxanthin were present. Accumulation of ketocarotenoids in leaves decreased their photosynthetic efficiency moderately. Under the green house conditions used no impairment of growth and development compared to the wild type was observed. In the crtO-transformants, an unexpected up-regulation of total carotenoid biosynthesis in leaves and especially in flower petals was observed. This led to a total ketocarotenoid concentration in leaves of 136.6 (young) or 156.1 (older) mug/g dry weight and in petals of 165 mug/g dry weight. In our engineered plants, the ketocarotenoid pathway is one step short of astaxanthin. Strategies are discussed to improve N. glauca flowers as a biological system for astaxanthin.  相似文献

2-C-methyl-D-erythritol, a soluble carbohydrate that is not ubiquitously found in higher plants, was detected in the ethanol extract from Phlox subulata petals and isolated using HPLC. The isolated compound was identified by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and Cl-MS spectra. 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol was a major soluble carbohydrate in petals, leaves and stems. In petals, the concentration of 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol markedly increased during flower development and opening and was similar in concentration to glucose, a ubiquitous metabolic sugar. This suggests that 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol may contribute to flower opening in association with glucose in the P. subulata.  相似文献

A common observation in different plant species is a massive abscission of flowers and fruitlets even after adequate pollination, but little is known as to the reason for this drop. Previous research has shown the importance of nutritive reserves accumulated in the flower on fertilization success and initial fruit development but direct evidence has been elusive. Avocado (Persea americana) is an extreme case of a species with a very low fruit to flower ratio. In this work, the implications of starch content in the avocado flower on the subsequent fruit set are explored. Firstly, starch content in individual ovaries was analysed from two populations of flowers with a different fruit set capacity showing that the flowers from the population that resulted in a higher percentage of fruit set contained significantly more starch. Secondly, in a different set of flowers, the style of each flower was excised one day after pollination, once the pollen tubes had reached the base of the style, and individually fixed for starch content analysis under the microscope once the fate of its corresponding ovary (that remained in the tree) was known. A high variability in starch content in the style was found among flowers, with some flowers having starch content up to 1,000 times higher than others, and the flowers that successfully developed into fruits presented significantly higher starch content in the style at anthesis than those that abscised. The relationship between starch content in the ovary and the capacity of set of the flower together with the correlation found between the starch content in the style and the fate of the ovary support the hypothesis that the carbohydrate reserves accumulated in the flower at anthesis are related to subsequent abscission or retention of the developing fruit.  相似文献
