A new species of Blastobotrys Klopotek (1, 2, 4, 5) has been recovered from white pepper. It appears to be sufficiently distinct from B. nivea v. Klopotek. (5), B. proliferas Marvanová, and B. aristata Marvanová (2), to be described as a new species under the name of Blastobotrys navarrensis. Both morphological as well as physiological characteristics were taken in account to differentiate the new species from Blastobotrys species known up to date.

Myoretronectes paranaensis, gen. et sp. n., from lotic sandy bottoms of the Paraná river, Argentina, is described. The establishment of the new genus is based on the presence of a non-ciliated pharynx, a discrete oesophagus, and a strong muscle system surrounding the distal pharynx. A new emended diagnosis of the family Retronectidae is presented. Myoretronectes paranaensis apparently cohabits with the oligochaete Narapa bonettoi Righi & Varela, 1983 and the copepod Parastenocaris sp.

Summary A new species of the soil nematode genus Cervidellus Thorne, 1937 sensu Andrássy, 1984, C. spitzbergensis sp. nov. is described from light and scanning electron microscope studies. The new species differs from all other known species of Cervidellus by the shape of the labial probolae (doubly bifurcate and outwardly projecting basal tines), the coarsely annulated cuticle (annules 2–3 m wide), and the prominent lateral field that expands around the phasmid and extends almost to tail terminus. The diagnostic value of longitudinal striations in the cuticle of cephalobids and the status of the genera Cervidellus and Stegelletina Andrássy, 1984 are discussed.

Three new oxyuroid nematode species of the family Pharyngodonidae are described from the intestine of freshwater catfishes in Brazil (River Paraná), two of them being representatives of new monotypic genera: Ichthyouris brasiliensis n. sp. from Pterygoplichthys aculeatus, Brasilnema pimelodellae n. g., n. sp. from Pimelodella gracilis, and Parasynodontisia petterae n. g., n. sp. from Rhinelepis aspera. I. brasiliensis n. sp. differs from the only other congeneric species, I. ro, mainly in the absence of a pair of plate-like structures in the male caudal region, shorter caudal alae, the presence of a pair of conspicuous lateral spines at the level of the anal opening in the female and by other features. Brasilnema n. g. is characterised mainly by a hexagonal oral opening, a broad buccal capsule containing three teeth, a simple spicule and an amphidelphic uterus, whereas Parasynodontisia n. g. is characterised by a triangular oral opening and an amphidelphic uterus in the female; both genera possess six small, triangular, circumoral lamellae slightly raised above the apical surface. The paper includes a key to the pharyngodonid genera whose species are parasitic in fishes.

Summary Elytrosporangium (Greek Elytron, pod), a new genus of Actinomycetales from soil, placed in the family ActinoplanaceaeCouch, and its type species,E. brasiliense, are described. The main characteristic of the new genus is the production, in the substratal mycelium, of pod-shaped sporangia (merosporangia) with non-motile, globose, subglobose, to more or less cylindrical sporangiospores in chains. In addition, aerial mycelium with spores in chains, as inStreptomyces, is produced.

Therodamas tamarae n.sp. is described based on females removed from branchial filaments of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Teleostei, Sciaenidae) caught in a lake near the Araguaia River, State of Goiás, Brazil. The new species shares with Therodamas elongatus (Thatcher, 1986) the same host, a similar reaction from the host to the presence of the parasites, and the same general shape of body; in addition, the two species are from the Amazon basin. On the other hand, it resembles T. fluviatilis Paggi, 1976 in the structure of legs 1 to 4. An identification key for Therodamas species, as well as comments on the distribution of the species, are included.

Summary The effects of inflorescence pubescence on floral temperatures and fecundity were examined in four species of Puya in the Ecuadorian Andes. These species span an elevational range from 1,980–4,000 m and comparisons among these species showed that pubescence production increases significantly with elevation. Flower temperatures of glabrous or slightly pubescent species of Puya from lower elevations closely tracked air temperature, while those of the pubescent páramo species did not. Pubescence removal experiments on Puya hamata, a páramo species, demonstrated that pubescence is an effective insulator, maintaining elevated flower temperatures. In Puya clava-herculis (also a páramo species) elevated flower temperatures were associated with higher seed set. Thus, the greater production of inflorescence pubescence in páramo species of Puya may be an important factor contributing to reproductive success in these higher elevation species.

Six species of the genus Eumonhystera, one of which is new to science, are described from bottom samples of Lake Tana and two associated rivers, River Abbay and R. Gelda, Ethiopia. E. geraerti n.sp. can be identified by being the only species in the genus that combines very posteriorly positioned vulva [V% = 68.2 ± 0.7 (67.3–69.3)] with very anteriorly positioned amphids (Amph-ABE/LRW = 0.8). The other five species encountered, E. dispar (Bastian, 1865) Andrássy, 1981, E. filiformis (Bastian, 1865) Andrássy, 1981, E. pseudobulbosa (von Daday, 1896) Andrássy, 1981, E. mwerazii (Meyl, 1957) Andrássy, 1981, and E. vulgaris (de Man, 1880), Andrássy, 1981, are described in detail. The identities of some of the already described populations of E. dispar, E. filiformis and E. vulgaris are questioned and clearer and better ways of defining each of these three species are suggested. A peritrophic-like membrane on the outer side of the brush-border of the intestine of E. mwerazii, a species reported here for the first time out of its type locality, is reported. Also, scanning electronmicrographs of sectioned and entire specimens of E. mwerazii are presented. All species are reported from Ethiopia for the first time.

Cephalocereus columna-trajani is a giant columnar cactus endemic of the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley in Central Mexico. Stem tilting and northward pseudocephalium azimuth in C.␣columna-trajani have functional advantages in terms of interception of direct solar radiation at the northernmost portions of its range. Since the success of both characters strongly depends on the apparent position of the sun during the growing season, in this paper we test the hypothesis that the occurrence of such columnar morphology is restricted geographically and imposes mechanical restrictions that limit column height. Following a latitudinal gradient along the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, we selected five populations, recorded tilting angle and pseudocephalium azimuth, and carried out allometric and biomechanical analyses of height–diameter relationships. Northern populations showed higher tilting angles. Pseudocephalium azimuth significantly differed among populations, and pseudocephalium orientation was consistently North-Northwestern. Stem allometry showed that the stems of the southern populations increased in height at a far greater rate with respect to diameter than the northern populations. The southernmost population showed the lowest safety factor. These results support the hypothesis that stem tilting in C.␣columna-trajani is functionally advantageous in a restricted geographical range, and imposes mechanical restrictions to column height.

During the parasitological examination of sterlets, Acipenser ruthenus L., caught for breeding, the developmental stages of two new coelozoic species of Myxosporea were demonstrated in the urinary passages. Chloromyxum inexpectatum n. sp. occurs attached to the epithelial cells of the ureters and urinary bladder. Sphaerospora colomani n. sp. forms bisporoblastic pseudoplasmodia in the lumen of the renal tubules. A further myxosporean species, Zschokkella sturionis Tripathi, 1948, was found in the biliary ducts. The occurrence of this parasite in sterlet has not been reported so far. Examination of blood smears revealed Cryptobia acipenseris and Haemogregarina acipenseris infection. Developmental stages of the coccidia Goussia acipenseris Molnár, 1986 and Goussia vargai Molnár, 1986 were frequently seen in the intestine of the dissected fish.

A comparative study is made in order to establish relationships between floristic and bioclimatic gradient. An east-west strip of about 200 Km in the inner area of the Basque Country has been chosen.Quercus faginea andQuercus pubescens forests have been studied. The climatic parameters of eight meteorological stations located within the area have also been analysed. The results obtained show the existence of four different forest types, which can be easily distinguished among themselves. They extend following the geographical longitude. The eastern ones can be related to a more continental character, the western ones to a more mediterranean one.
