Examining all of the claim forms for night visits submitted to the Nottingham Family Practitioner Committee over a three month period allowed us to calculate the night visit rate for all 184 practices in Nottinghamshire. To take all of the practices together the mean night visit rate (covering all visits requested and made between 11 00 pm and 7 00 am) was 15.5 visits per 1000 patients a year, range 1.2 to 46.1. Whether or not a deputising service is used accounted for 12% of the total variance detected, while the other factors studied, such as area of practice, patient list size, and number of partners, accounted for approximately 1% each. The local deputising service responds to 97% of night calls with a visit to the patient, whereas the patient''s own doctor is more likely to provide advice over the telephone. The ability to provide telephone advice, however, will vary according to the breakdown of the practice by age and social class.  相似文献

Measuring pollinator performance has become increasingly important with emerging needs for risk assessment in conservation and sustainable agriculture that require multi‐year and multi‐site comparisons across studies. However, comparing pollinator performance across studies is difficult because of the diversity of concepts and disparate methods in use. Our review of the literature shows many unresolved ambiguities. Two different assessment concepts predominate: the first estimates stigmatic pollen deposition and the underlying pollinator behaviour parameters, while the second estimates the pollinator's contribution to plant reproductive success, for example in terms of seed set. Both concepts include a number of parameters combined in diverse ways and named under a diversity of synonyms and homonyms. However, these concepts are overlapping because pollen deposition success is the most frequently used proxy for assessing the pollinator's contribution to plant reproductive success. We analyse the diverse concepts and methods in the context of a new proposed conceptual framework with a modular approach based on pollen deposition, visit frequency, and contribution to seed set relative to the plant's maximum female reproductive potential. A system of equations is proposed to optimize the balance between idealised theoretical concepts and practical operational methods. Our framework permits comparisons over a range of floral phenotypes, and spatial and temporal scales, because scaling up is based on the same fundamental unit of analysis, the single visit.  相似文献

Background:

The risk of infection following a visit to the emergency department is unknown. We explored this risk among elderly residents of long-term care facilities.

Methods:

We compared the rates of new respiratory and gastrointestinal infections among elderly residents aged 65 years and older of 22 long-term care facilities. We used standardized surveillance definitions. For each resident who visited the emergency department during the study period, we randomly selected two residents who did not visit the emergency department and matched them by facility unit, age and sex. We calculated the rates and proportions of new infections, and we used conditional logistic regression to adjust for potential confounding variables.

Results:

In total, we included 1269 residents of long-term care facilities, including 424 who visited the emergency department during the study. The baseline characteristics of residents who did or did not visit the emergency department were similar, except for underlying health status (visited the emergency department: mean Charlson Comorbidity Index 6.1, standard deviation [SD] 2.5; did not visit the emergency department: mean Charlson Comorbidity index 5.5, SD 2.7; p < 0.001) and the proportion who had visitors (visited the emergency department: 46.9%; did not visit the emergency department: 39.2%; p = 0.01). Overall, 21 (5.0%) residents who visited the emergency department and 17 (2.0%) who did not visit the emergency department acquired new infections. The incidence of new infections was 8.3/1000 patient-days among those who visited the emergency department and 3.4/1000 patient-days among those who did not visit the emergency department. The adjusted odds ratio for the risk of infection following a visit to the emergency department was 3.9 (95% confidence interval 1.4–10.8).

Interpretation:

A visit to the emergency department was associated with more than a threefold increased risk of acute infection among elderly people. Additional precautions should be considered for residents following a visit to the emergency department.Infections associated with health care are an important health risk. A recent survey by the World Health Organization reported that 8.7% of patients in hospital developed such infections.1,2 The third leading cause of death in the United States is health care–associated deaths, with over 100 000 people dying from infections associated with health care each year.3 In Canada, a point-prevalence survey found that 11.6% of adults in hospital experience a health care–associated infection.4Little attention has been paid to infections acquired in other health care settings. Visiting an emergency department has been identified as a risk for disease during outbreaks of measles5,6 and SARS,7,8 but little is known about the potential risk of endemic infection from exposure in this setting. A visit to the emergency department differs from a stay in hospital: exposure and duration of contact with other patients is shorter, but the number and density of patients with acute illness with whom there could be contact is higher.Elderly residents of long-term care facilities are likely to be at the greatest risk of morbidity and mortality from communicable diseases acquired in the emergency department. When residents are transferred to the emergency department for assessment, they are likely to have longer stays and to be cared for in multibed observation areas and corridors.9 If they acquire an infection while in the emergency department, these residents may be the source of an outbreak upon return to their facility; this can lead to increases in workload and costs. A Canadian study estimated the cost of an influenza outbreak to be over $6000 per 30-day period, with an estimated incidence of death of 0.75/100 residents during the same period.10 In this study, we explored the risk of acute respiratory and gastrointestinal infection associated with a visit to the emergency department among elderly residents of long-term care facilities.  相似文献

Nest visit synchrony, whereby adults coordinate their visits to the nest, has been documented in several species of cooperative breeders. Visit synchrony may reduce nest predation rate or sibling competition, or instead follow from synchronisation of other behaviours, such as foraging. However, nest visit synchrony has rarely been considered in species with bi‐parental care, even though it could conceivably bring similar fitness benefits to that seen in cooperative breeders. In addition, in species with bi‐parental care, we might expect nest visit synchrony to reflect the quality of the pair or the overall coordination of breeding activity between partners. Here, we tested whether nest visit synchrony occurs in a classic avian model for the study of bi‐parental care, the zebra finch Taeniopygia guttata. We found that in the wild, both zebra finch parents visited the nest very infrequently during nestling provisioning, with only one visit per hour, and that nest visits were highly synchronised with parents visiting the nest together on 78% of the visits. In addition, we found that nest visit synchrony was correlated with hatching rate, brood size at hatching and the number of offspring in the nest a few days prior to fledging. Our results suggest that, while more work is required to understand the benefits of nest visit synchrony in this species, considering behavioural synchrony and cooperation between mated partners may offer new insight into the study of parental investment, including in species with bi‐parental care.  相似文献

As the human population has increased, so too has the demand for biotically pollinated crops. Bees (Apoidea) are essential for pollen transfer and fruit production in many crops, and their visit patterns can be influenced by floral morphology. Here, we considered the role of floral morphology on visit rates and behaviour of managed honey bees (Apis mellifera) and wild bumble bees (genus Bombus), for four highbush blueberry cultivars (Vaccinium corymbosum L.). We measured five floral traits for each cultivar, finding significant variation among cultivars. Corolla throat diameter may be the main morphological determinant of visit rates of honey bees, which is significantly higher on the wider flowers of cv. ‘Duke’ than on ‘Bluecrop’ or ‘Draper’. Honey bees also visited cv. ‘Duke’ legitimately but were frequent nectar robbers on the long, narrow flowers of cv. ‘Bluecrop’. Bumble bees were infrequent (and absent on cv. ‘Draper’) but all observed visits were legitimate. Crop yield was highest for the cultivar with the highest combined (honey bee + bumble bee) visit rate, suggesting that aspects of floral morphology that affect pollinator visit patterns should be considered in crop breeding initiatives.  相似文献

Interval-censored failure-time data arise when subjects miss prescheduled visits at which the failure is to be assessed. The resulting intervals in which the failure is known to have occurred are overlapping. Most approaches to the analysis of these data assume that the visit-compliance process is ignorable with respect to likelihood analysis of the failure-time distribution. While this assumption offers considerable simplification, it is not always plausible. Here we test for dependence between the failure- and visit-compliance processes, applicable to studies in which data collection continues after the occurrence of the failure. We do not make any of the assumptions made by previous authors about the joint distribution of the visit-compliance process, a covariate process, and the failure time. Instead, we consider conditional models of the true failure history given the current visit compliance at each visit time, allowing for correlation across visit times. Because failure status is not known at some visit times due to missed visits, only models of the observed failure history given current visit compliance are estimable. We describe how the parameters from these models can be used to test for a negative association and how bounds on unestimable parameters provided by the observed data are needed additionally to infer a positive association. We illustrate the method with data from an AIDS study and we investigate the power of the test through a simulation study.  相似文献

A new species of pandeid anthomedusa, Amphinema modernisme, is described from a single and complete specimen collected by a mid-water sediment trap placed at 500 m depth in open waters, over a 1066-m bottom in the Drake Passage near the South Shetland Islands. This new Amphinema is characterized by an egg-shaped apical chamber, partitioned by four narrow sacciform centrifugal prolongations of the radial canals, perradial gonads and cellular strands linking the radial canals to the exumbrella. Its morphological features are compared with those of the eight other species of the genus Amphinema and a new diagnosis for this genus is presented. Accepted: 19 July 1999  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To compare night visit rates in different electoral wards of one general practice with the Jarman and Townsend deprivation scores and unemployment rates. DESIGN--Analysis of computerised workload data. SETTING--General practice in centre of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. OUTCOME MEASURE--Visits made in 588 nights to the 11,998 patients on the practice list. RESULTS--Night visit rates in 15 electoral wards varied from 19.6 to 55.3 visits per 1000 patients per year. The rates showed a significant association with the Townsend score (p = 0.004) and the unemployment rate (p = 0.03) but not with the Jarman score (p = 0.3). The Townsend score explained 49% of the variability; unemployment explained 31% and the Jarman score explained 9%. CONCLUSIONS--Even in a general practice not eligible for deprivation payments there was a 2.8-fold variation in night visit rates between wards. In this practice the Townsend score was significantly better at predicting night visit rates than the Jarman score. This method of looking at internal variation in workloads in computerised practices could give more direct data on the relation between deprivation and general practice workload than has previously been available.  相似文献

Organic solar cells are promising in terms of full‐solution‐processing which enables low‐cost and large‐scale fabrication. While single‐junction solar cells have seen a boost in power conversion efficiency (PCE), multi‐junction solar cells are promising to further enhance the PCE. In all‐solution‐processed multi‐junction solar cells, interfacial losses are often encountered between hole‐transporting layer (HTL) and the active layers and therefore greatly limit the application of newly developed high‐performance donor and acceptor materials in multi‐junction solar cells. Here, the authors report on a systematic study of interface losses in both single‐junction and multi‐junction solar cells based on representative polymer donors and HTLs using electron spectroscopy and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. It is found that a facile mixed HTL containing poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and MoO x nanoparticles successfully overcomes the interfacial losses in both single‐ and multi‐junction solar cells based on various active layers by reducing interface protonation, promoting better energy‐level alignment, and forming a dense and smooth layer. Solution‐processed single‐junction solar cells are demonstrated to reach the same performance as with evaporated MoO x (over 7%). Multi‐junction solar cells with polymers containing nitrogen atoms as the first layer and the mixed PEDOT:PSS and MoO x nanoparticles as hole extraction layer reach fill factor (FF) of over 60%, and PCE of over 8%, while the identical stack with pristine PEDOT:PSS or MoO x nanoparticles show FF smaller than 50% and PCE less than 5%.  相似文献

The morphology and development of the multiple lateral line canals (canals 1–5 in dorsal to ventral sequence) on the trunk of two representative hexagrammids, Hexagrammos decagrammus and H. stelleri, were studied using histological and cleared and stained material. The morphology of the lateral line scales of which the lateral line canals are composed and the distribution of canal neuromasts within them were described quantitatively. We hypothesized that 1) one neuromast is contained in each lateral line scale and all five canals contain neuromasts, 2) all five canals develop similarly, and 3) the multiple trunk canals are an adaptation for the alteration of lateral line function. Lateral line scale morphology was found to be similar among the five canals in Hexagrammos decagrammus and H. stelleri. However, canal 3 is significantly wider than the other four canals. It is the only one of the five canals connected to the canals on the head, and more significantly, it is the only one of the five canals that contains neuromasts. The lateral line scales that comprise all five lateral line canals show the same pattern of development whether or not they contain neuromasts. The five canals develop asynchronously, and each of the canals develops either rostro-caudally or caudo-rostrally. Canal 3 is the homologue of a single trunk canal in other teleosts; canals 1, 2, 4, and 5 are apomorphic features of the two species of Hexagrammos. Canals 1, 2, 4, and 5 cannot be functional components of the lateral line system because they do not contain neuromasts and thus cannot be adaptations for the alteration of lateral line function. The occurrence of lateral line canals lacking neuromasts demands a direct assessment of neuromast distributions in the lateral line canals among fishes. Finally, our data suggest that the putative role of neuromasts in the morphogenesis of lateral line canals and the nature of neuromast-bone relationships need to be critically reevaluated. J. The internal radius (r) and radius of curvature (R) of the single semicircular canals of Myxine glutinosa have unusual dimensions. In mammals and fish the increase in dimension of r and R with respect to body weight is small; in fish r is larger than in mammals of equivalent weight in order to increase the sensitivity of the canals to angular rotation and R increases correspondingly (Jones & Spells, 1963). In Myxine r is larger than in fish or mammals yet R is smaller. It is argued that the large internal radius is the result of the need to increase the sensitivity of a single canal which has to signal rotation in three planes while the small radius of curvature follows from the absence of a cupula. In order to verify that the cristae of the canals do respond to rotational velocity, recordings were obtained from the nerves serving the canals during rotation in the horizontal plane. The frequency response of several afferents recorded simultaneously at sinusoidal rotations between 0.25 and 2.0 Hz was in the form of a sine wave 90 in advance of head position, as would be expected of a velocity transducer. The gain of single afferents was an order of magnitude less than those reported for other vertebrates.  相似文献

Examining variation in pollinator effectiveness and seed production resulting from single pollinator visits can provide a deeper understanding of how pollinators may influence reproduction in plant populations. When comparing populations, differences in the number of seeds produced from single pollinator visits to flowers may not always be attributable to differences in pollen deposition, but rather to differences in plant fecundity or resource availability. Pollinator effectiveness and seed production were studied for two populations over a 4-year period and were measured using single bee visit manipulations of flowers. No significant difference in pollinator effectiveness (pollen deposited on stigmas) was observed between the two populations. However, a significant difference between the two populations was observed in the number of seeds produced per flower. The Wellhouse population produced approximately three times as many seeds/flower from a single pollinator visit as did the Firefly Meadow population. Within each population, pollinators (Bombus pennsylvanicus and Apis mellifera) did not differ in the number of pollen grains deposited on stigmas or seeds produced per flower from single visit experiments. Differences in plant density, pollen viability, and ovules per flower also could not account for a significant amount of the variation. A resource augmentation experiment (water and fertilizer application) resulted in a decrease in seeds per flower per bee visit for the water treatment at the Wellhouse population only. For both populations, pollen deposition, pollen viability, and ovules per flower were unaffected by the resource augmentation. Alternative possibilities for the observed differences in seeds per flower per bee visit are discussed.  相似文献

We investigated the filter properties of the highly branched trunk lateral lines of the stichaeid Xiphister atropurpureus and compared them to the filter properties of simple lateral line canals. For this purpose artificial canals were constructed, some of which were fitted with artificial neuromasts. In still water, the response of a simple canal versus two types of Xiphister-like canals to a vibrating sphere stimulus were similar, as was the decrease in the responses as a function of sphere distance. Also comparable was the mechanical coupling between neighboring parts of the main canal. However, compared to the simple canal, the Xiphister-like canals showed a lower spatial resolution. Equipping artificial lateral line canals with artificial neuromasts revealed that Xiphister-like canals, i.e., lateral lines canals with tubuli that contained widely spaced pores, improve the signal-to-noise ratio in a highly turbulent environment. Even though a reduced spatial resolution is the price for this improvement, Xiphister may compensate for this compromise by having four instead of the usual single trunk lateral line canal. We suggest that lateral line canals with tubuli that contain widely spaced pores and multiple lateral line canals on each body side are an adaptation to a highly turbulent aquatic environment.  相似文献

Anthropogenic alterations of natural hydrology are common in wetlands and often increase water permanence, converting ephemeral habitats into permanent ones. Since aquatic organisms segregate strongly along hydroperiod gradients, added water permanence caused by canals can dramatically change the structure of aquatic communities. We examined the impact of canals on the abundance and structure of wetland communities in South Florida, USA. We sampled fishes and macroinvertebrates from marsh transects originating at canals in the central and southern Everglades. Density of all aquatic organisms sampled increased in the immediate proximity of canals, but was accompanied by few compositional changes based on analysis of relative abundance. Large fish ( >8 cm), small fish ( <8 cm) and macroinvertebrates ( >5 mm) increased in density within 5 m of canals. This pattern was most pronounced in the dry season, suggesting that canals may serve as dry-down refugia. Increases in aquatic animal density closely matched gradients of phosphorus enrichment that decreased with distance from canals. Thus, the most apparent impact of canals on adjacent marsh communities was as conduits for nutrients that stimulated local productivity; any impact of their role as sources of increased sources of predators was not apparent. The effect of predation close to canals was overcompensated by increased secondary productivity and/or immigration toward areas adjacent to canals in the dry season. Alternatively, the consumptive effect of predatory fishes using canals as dry-season refuges is very small or spread over the expanse of marshes with open access to canals. The year 2010 marks the 175th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s visit to the Galapagos Islands. A recent paper by J. C. Briggs, ‘Darwin’s biogeography’ (Journal of Biogeography, 2009, 36 , 1011–1017), summarizes Darwin’s contributions to the field of biogeography, stressing the importance of his natural history specimens. Here, we illustrate how a plant collected by Darwin during his visit to Floreana and not collected since can provide insights into dispersal to oceanic islands as well as extinction of island plants, based on ancient DNA from Darwin’s herbarium specimen.  相似文献

Genetically modified plants containing selectable markers offer a unique opportunity for pollination biologists to investigate some of the major, but intractable questions about paternity distributions and their causes. Here, a method is reported that uses transgenic plants to enable the quantification of the outcrossed fertilizations that result from a single pollinator visit. Gene flow mediated by worker bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) was studied among plants of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Westar) where transgenic paternity in seeds of a non-transgenic plant was manifested as herbicide resistance. Overall, 91% of the resistant seeds resulted from the first four flowers that were visited after the bumblebee left the transgenic plant, and none was found beyond the 14th successively visited flower. The possibilities for developing the method to address various questions in pollination biology are discussed.  相似文献

Spatial similarity of urban bird communities: a multiscale approach   总被引:14,自引:0,他引:14  
Aim Human land use, especially urbanization, might homogenize the world's biota. The objective of this study is to find out if urbanization homogenizes wintering bird communities, and if habitat type affects the spatial variation of urban bird communities across spatial scales. Location We compared the quantitative similarity of winter bird communities between town centres, apartment block areas and single‐family house areas across regional and local scales in five towns in northern Finland. Methods The wintering birds were surveyed using a single‐visit study plot (30 ha) method in January and February 2001. The validity of single‐visit and single‐year data was confirmed by using data from several‐visit surveys and multi‐year data set. The level of urbanization was measured according to the number of inhabitants and general structure of the habitat. Results Temporal variability in species richness and total number of individuals was low, both between winters and within winter. Bird community similarity between different habitat types within a single town was about the same as that in similar habitats in different towns. At the regional scale, bird community similarity between town centres (30%) was lower than between areas of apartment blocks (54%) or between areas of single‐family houses (54%). We detected a threshold point between towns of 35,000 and 105,000 inhabitants and between town sizes of 5.0–8.5 km in diameter where human impact causes marked changes in bird community structure. At the local scale, bird community similarity level between apartment block areas (49%) and single‐family house areas (62%) were about the same. Passer domesticus, Parus major and Pica pica dominated the bird communities in residential areas. Different habitat factors affected bird species abundances on the local and regional scales. Conclusions Urbanization cannot be seen as a process that monotonically increases the similarity of bird communities. Our results indicate that the similarity between urban bird communities is dependent on the size of the town, location of the study site within the town and especially the local habitat structure. Because different habitat factors affected bird species abundances, it is difficult to extrapolate bird–habitat relationships derived from one scale to other scales. In wintertime, single‐family house areas are important biodiversity hotspots in cities. Therefore, it is especially important to understand the factors affecting the occurrence of birds in the single‐family house area in order to maintain or even increase diversity on winter birds in other urban habitats.  相似文献

In a concurrent schedule, responding at each alternative is controlled by a pair of schedules that arrange reinforcers for staying at that alternative and reinforcers for switching to the other alternative. Each pair of schedules operates only while at the associated alternative. When only one pair of stay and switch schedules is presented, the rates of earning reinforcers for staying divided by the rates of earning reinforcers for switching controls the mean number responses in a visit and the mean duration of visits. The purpose of the present experiment was to see whether the sum of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers changed the way that run length and visit duration were affected by the ratio of the rates of stay to switch reinforcers. Rats were exposed to pairs of stay and switch schedules that varied both the ratio of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers and the sum of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers. Run lengths and visit durations were joint functions of the ratio of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers and the sum of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers. These results shows that the effect of the ratio of the sum of the rates of earning stay and switch reinforcers results from processes operating at the alternative, rather than from processes operating at both alternatives.  相似文献

Videotaping is currently recognized as the most reliable method of predator identification at active bird nests but it is relatively expensive and labour intensive. While the number of published studies has increased over the past 10 years, the mean sample size is not increasing. Thirty‐one case studies (n>5 events) reported 6–70 (median=22) predation events by 2–14 (6) species of predators. The number of predator species increased with a 0.50±0.09 (SE) power of sample size across studies (0.54±0.06 with the present study included). This relationship was consistent across single‐ and multi‐species studies and corresponded well with that found within the present 5‐year study (176 events, 20 species) where neither the annual nor the pooled‐sample species accumulation curve reached an obvious asymptote. The species accumulation curve was smooth and fell within the confidence limits of the rarefaction curve over the entire range of sample sizes, suggesting homogeneous sampling. In 31 case studies the dominant predator accounted for 21–96% (38%) of total predation and this proportion did not correlate with the sample size across studies. In this study the observed proportion fluctuated widely until the cumulative sample size reached about 50 records and stabilized thereafter at the final value of 37%. Because the regional pool of potential nest predators is usually high, a complete enumeration of the local predator community is difficult with an acceptable nest monitoring effort. Correct identification of the dominant predators is likely even with small samples, but quantification of their share is uncertain when based on <50 records. Researchers are encouraged to increase their sampling effort above the current level and to consider contingency of results upon sample size.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Capsule: We developed a protocol for efficient monitoring of potential Common Swift Apus apus nest sites which considers variation in nest visit frequency across the breeding season and in relation to time of day and weather.

Aims: To investigate patterns of nest visit frequency in Common Swifts in order to improve the efficiency and reliability of the monitoring of nest sites threatened by building renovations.

Methods: We derived information on nest attendance from light data recorded by geolocators from ten adult Common Swifts during three breeding seasons (n?=?686 individual sampling days) and analysed how nest visit frequency varied across the breeding season and in relation to time of day and weather.

Results: The mean nest visit frequency was 5.63 visits per bird per day (0.32 visits per hour of daylight). The daily number of visits was highest at the beginning of July during chick-rearing. Moreover, it was positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with rainfall and wind speed. Nest visit frequency showed a distinct peak around sunset, while also being relatively high in the morning and around noon.

Conclusion: We recommend monitoring potential Common Swift nest sites in Central Europe between the end of June and mid-July during good weather between 0.50 and 7.75?h after sunrise or between 3.00?h before sunset and sunset, when observation bouts of 0.5–2.0?h provide an encounter probability greater than 90%. Our study shows that repurposing geolocator light data – usually used to study bird migration – for investigating nest attendance in cavity-breeding birds can provide important information for bird conservation.  相似文献
