A system of ordinary differential equations is used to model the interactions of n competing predators on a single prey population in a chemostat environment with a periodic nutrient input. In the case of one or no predators, criteria for the existence of periodic solutions are given. The effect of time delay in specific growth rate () on the periodic operation of bioreactors with input multiplicities is theoretically analyzed for productivity improvement. A periodic rectangular pulse is applied either in feed substrate concentration (Sf) or in dilution rate (D). Periodic operation under feed substrate concentration cycling gives improvement in productivity at lower value of ¯Sf of the two steady-state multiplicities of Sf only when the time delay in is larger. Whereas the larger value of ¯Sf gives improvement in average productivity for all values of time delay. Dilution rate (D) cycling gives an improvement in average productivity particularly for larger time delay in . 以长江一级支流小江上游的汉丰湖为研究对象,设置了4个采样点(影响组:A, B;对照组:C, D),应用碳、氮稳定性同位素探讨人类生活污水和农业面源污染对汉丰湖水生生态系统中不同营养级水平生物类群的影响。结果表明:影响组POM(颗粒有机物)和螺类碳、氮稳定性同位素比值范围分别为-25.93‰--24.63‰、4.12‰-9.86‰,-14.28‰--21.60‰、7.97‰-19.99‰;对照组POM(颗粒有机物)和螺类碳、氮稳定性同位素比值范围分别为-25.62‰--22.51‰、0.01‰-6.56‰,-22.96‰--19.21‰、6.75‰-8.89‰;不同组间POM和初级消费者螺类碳同位素比值无明显空间变化(P>0.05), 而氮稳定性同位素比值空间变化显著(P<0.05)。因此,在汉丰湖食物网中,氮稳定性同位素特征更好地反应了营养物质(人为输入)吸收和富集的信息。与固着藻类、鱼类等相比,POM和软体动物螺类更适合作为环境评价的指示物。影响组A、B样点的部分生物类群已经受到了人为营养物质输入的影响,影响强度B样点区域>A样点区域。结果建议加强汉丰湖水环境保护,控制污水排放量及提高污水处理水平,对于保护小江和三峡库区水质具有十分重要的意义。  相似文献

The impact of food web complexity in open and closed food webs was explored experimentally under controlled laboratory conditions. We used an aquatic model community consisting of two forms of primary producers, phytoplankton ( Scenedesmus obtusiuscusculus ) and periphyton ( Nitzschia perminuta ) and two types of consumers, Daphnia pulex feeding on phytoplankton and Chydorous sphaericus feeding on both periphyton and phytoplankton. Three different food webs all having the phytoplankton and periphyton, but having either one of the consumers or both were set up. These food webs were studied in an open and closed treatment. In the open treatment, phytoplankton was continuously flowing through the aquaria whereas in the closed system all the phytoplankton was delivered at the start of the experiment.
D. pulex had a positive effect on the density of C. sphaericus in both the open and closed treatments. In the open treatment C. sphaericus increased to very high numbers and was able to depress phytoplankton and thereby negatively affect D. pulex . Our study shows that the explicit handling of the population dynamics of both grazers allowed us to show how a compensatory increase in one primary producer due to increased grazing on another primary producer creates a negative feedback between consumers: C. sphaericus increased and negatively affected D. pulex .  相似文献

Sphingomyelin (SM) is a main component of lipid rafts and characteristic of abundance of long and saturated acyl chains. Recently, we reported that fluorescence-labeled lipids including C16:0 and C18:0SMs retained membrane behaviors of inherent lipids. Here, we newly prepared fluorescent SMs with longer acyl chains, C22:0 and C24:1, for observing their partition and diffusion in SM/cholesterol (chol)/dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) bilayers. Although fluorescent C24:1SM underwent a uniform distribution between ordered (Lo) and disordered (Ld) phases, other fluorescent SMs with saturated acyl chains were preferentially distributed in the Lo phase. Interestingly, when the acyl chains of fluorescent and membrane SMs are different, distribution of fluorescent SM to the Lo phase was reduced compared to when the acyl chains are the same. This tendency was also observed for C16:0SM/C22:0SM/chol/DOPC quaternary bilayers, where the minor SM was more excluded out of the Lo phase than the major SM. We also found that the coexistence of SMs induces SM efflux out of the Lo phase and simultaneous DOPC influx to the Lo phase, consequently reducing the difference in fluidity between the two phases. These results suggest that physicochemical properties of lipid rafts are regulated by the acyl chain heterogeneity of SMs.  相似文献

A mathematical neuron model defined by a difference equation was investigated when it was exposed to an environment of a periodic input stimulus. It is shown that pulse sequences constructed in advance by a particular method are actually realizable as the output of the system and the condition for the output sequence is also obtained with respect to the magnitude of the input. Based on a review and our own data, we present an overview of the ecological impacts on the trophic web of Mediterranean wetlands by an introduced Decapod Crustacean, the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). P. clarkii lacks efficient dispersal mechanisms but is very well adapted to the ecological conditions of Mediterranean wetlands (fluctuating hydroperiods with regular intervals of drought). As an opportunistic, omnivorous species, which adapts its ecology and life history characteristics, such as timing and size at reproduction to changing environmental conditions, it became readily established in most of the Mediterranean wetland environments. High reproductive output, short development time and a flexible feeding strategy are responsible for its success as an invader. Like most crayfish, it occupies a keystone position in the trophic web of the invaded system and interacts strongly with various trophic levels. It efficiently grazes on macrophytes and is one of the main factors, besides the impact of flamingos, cattle and introduced fish, of the change of many water bodies from a macrophyte dominated, clear water equilibrium to a phytoplankton driven turbid water balance. Juveniles feed on protein rich animal food with the corresponding impact on the macroinvertebrate community in competition with other crayfish or fish species. At the same time, it serves as a prey for mammals, birds and fish. Due to its predatory and grazing activity, it efficiently canalises energy pathways reducing food web complexity and structure. Feeding also on detritus it opens, especially in marshlands, the detritic food chain to higher trophic levels which results in an increase of crayfish predators. As a vector of diseases, it has a severe impact on the preservation and reintroduction of native crayfish. P. clarkii accumulates heavy metals and other pollutants in its organs and body tissues and transmits them to higher trophic levels. Due to the long history of its presence, the complex interactions it established within the invaded ecosystems and the socio-economic benefits it provides to humans, prevention and control seem the most promising management measures to reduce the negative impact of this crayfish species. Twenty-one species of macroalgae (four Chlorophyta, eight Rhodophyta, and nine Phaeophyta) from the Kongsfjord (Norwegian Arctic) were examined for their response to nutrient enrichment (nitrate and phosphate) in the summer period. The enzymatic activities related to nutrient assimilation, external carbonic anhydrase (CAext, EC 4.2.1.1), nitrate reductase (NR, EC 1.6.6.1), and alkaline phosphatase (AP, EC 3.1.3.1), as well as the biochemical composition (total C and N, soluble carbohydrates, soluble proteins, and pigments) were measured. CAext activity was present in all species, and showed a general decrease after nutrient enrichment. Inversely, NR activity increased in most of the species examined. Changes in pigment ratios pointed to the implication of light harvesting system in the acclimation strategy. Despite enzymatic and pigmentary response, the Arctic seaweeds can be regarded as not being N-limited even in summer, as shown by the slight effect of nutrient enrichment on biochemical composition. The exception being the nitrophilic species Monostroma arcticum and, to a lesser extent, Acrosiphonia sp. For the rest of the species studied, changes in total internal C and N, soluble proteins, soluble carbohydrates, pigment content, and the internal pool of inorganic N were recorded only for particular species and no general pattern was shown. Acclimation to unexpected nutrient input seemed to ensure the maintenance of a stable biomass composition, rather than an optimized use of the newly available resource (except for the nitrophilic species). This indicates a high degree of resilience of the algal community to a disruption in the natural nutrient availability pattern.  相似文献

Electrical stimulation of the lumbar cord at distinct frequency ranges has been shown to evoke either rhythmical, step-like movements (25–50 Hz) or a sustained extension (5–15 Hz) of the paralysed lower limbs in complete spinal cord injured subjects. Frequency-dependent activation of previously silent spinal pathways was suggested to contribute to the differential responsiveness to distinct neuronal codes and the modifications in the electromyographic recordings during the actual implementation of the evoked motor tasks. In the present study we examine this suggestion by means of a simplified biology-based neuronal network. Involving two basic mechanisms, temporal summation of synaptic input and presynaptic inhibition, the model exhibits several patterns of mono- and/or oligo-synaptic motor output in response to different interstimulus intervals. It thus reproduces fundamental input–output features of the lumbar cord isolated from the brain. The results confirm frequency-dependent spinal pathway selection as a simple mechanism which enables the cord to respond to distinct neuronal codes with different motor behaviours and to control the actual performance of the latter.  相似文献

1. Waterbirds are considered to import large quantities of nutrients to freshwater bodies but quantification of these loadings remains problematic. We developed two general models to calculate such allochthonous nutrient inputs considering food intake, foraging behaviour and digestive performance of waterbirds feeding in terrestrial habitats: an intake model (IM), mainly based on an allometric relationship for energy requirements and a dropping model (DM), based on allometric relationships for defaecation. 2. Reviewed data of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content of herbivorous food varied according to diet type (foliage, seeds and roots), season and fertilization. For model parameterization average foliage diet contained 38.20 mg N g?1 and 3.21 mg P g?1 (dry weight), whereas mean faeces composition was 45.02 mg N g?1 and 6.18 mg P g?1. 3. Daily allochthonous nutrient input increased with body mass ranging from 0.29 g N and 0.03 g P in teals Anas crecca to 5.69 g N and 0.57 g P in mute swans Cygnus olor. Results from IM differed from those of DM from ducks to swans by 63–108% for N and by ?4 to 23% for P. Model uncertainty was lowest for the IM and mainly caused by variation in estimates of food retention time (RT). In DM food RT and dropping mass determined model uncertainty in similar extent. 4. Exemplarily applying the models to Dutch wetlands resulted in mean annual contribution of herbivorous waterbirds to allochthonous nutrient loading of 382.8 ± 167.1 tonnes N a?1and 34.7 ± 2.3 tonnes P a?1, respectively, which corresponds to annual surface‐water loadings of 1.07 kg N ha?1 and 0.10 kg P ha?1. 5. There was a distinct seasonal pattern with peak loadings in January, when bird abundances were highest. Lowest inputs were in August, when bird abundance and nutrient content in food was low and birds foraged less in terrestrial habitats. Three‐quarters of all nutrient input was contributed by greater white‐fronted goose Anser albifrons, greylag goose Anser anser, wigeon Anas penelope and barnacle goose Branta leucopsis alone. 6. We provide general, easy to use calculation methods for the estimation of allochthonous nutrient inputs by waterbirds, which are applicable to a range of waterbird species, a variety of potential diets and feeding behaviours, and across spatial scales. Such tools may greatly assist in the planning and execution of management actions for wetland nutrient budgets.  相似文献

Questions: What effect does sheep grazing have on the nutrient budgets of heathlands? Can grazing compensate for atmospheric nutrient loads in heathland ecosystems? What are the conclusions for heathland management? Location: Lüneburg Heath, NW Germany. Methods: During a one-year grazing experiment (stocking rate 1.1 sheep/ha) nutrient balances for N, Ca, K, Mg and P were calculated by quantifying input rates (atmospheric deposition, sheep excrement) and output rates (biomass removal, leaching). Results: Atmospheric nutrient deposition amounted to 22.8 kg.ha−1.a−1 for N and < 0.2 kg.ha−1.a−1 for P. Sheep excrement increased the inputs for N and P by ca. 3.5 and 0.2 kg.ha−1.a−1, respectively. Grazing reduced N- and P-stores in the above-ground biomass by 25.6 and 1.9 kg.ha−1.a−1, respectively. N-and P-losses via leaching amounted to 2.2 and < 0.2 kg.ha−1.a−1. Output:input ratios for P were high, indicating that grazing severely affected P-budgets of heaths. Conclusions: Our results suggest that sheep grazing has the potential to compensate for atmospheric nutrient loads (particularly for current N deposition rates). However, in the long term the combination of elevated N-deposition and P-loss due to grazing may cause a shift from N-(co-) limited to more P-(co-) limited plant growth. To counteract an aggravation of P-deficiency in the long term, grazing may be combined with management measures that affect P-budgets to a lesser extent (e.g. prescribed burning).  相似文献

This study provides a comparative account of the effects of cadmium, temperature, ultraviolet-B and sodium chloride on the growth, photosynthesis, nutrient uptake and enzyme activities of untreated control and copper-acclimated Anabaena doliolum. Reduction in all the studied parameters, except carotenoids, was maximum for sodium chloride followed by ultraviolet-B, temperature and cadmium treatments, the reduction being greater in control than acclimated A. doliolum. Among the various parameters, photosystem II was most sensitive for all the stresses in both control and acclimated A. doliolum. Likewise, O2 evolution was more susceptible to various stressors than 14C uptake. Ammonium uptake and glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2) were the least affected parameters. As compared to control, acclimated Anabaena exhibited higher ATP content under normal conditions. These results attest our hypotheses that acclimated Anabaena was physiologically more robust than control and that salinity was more injurious to the test organism than other abiotic stresses investigated.  相似文献

Based on routine monitoring data in Xiangxi River and its main tributary Gaolan River from September 2000 to June 2005, this paper estimates the contribution of riverine nutrients, and analyzes the monthly dynamics of concentrations and fluxes of nutrients. The results show that Xiangxi Bay annually receives 1623.49 tons of total nitrogen (TN) and 331.85 tons of total phosphorus; Xiangxi River alone accounts for 68.50% of the total nitrogen fluxes and 91.74% of the total phosphorus fluxes. In these two rivers, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) is the dominating form of nitrogen; fluxes of DIN and TN are high during summer (July), mid-spring and autumn, and relatively low in winter; non-point source pollutants that flow into rivers are the most important pathway of nitrogen. Orthophosphate is the dominating form of phosphorus in Xiangxi River, relatively low in Gaolan River; fluxes of phosphorus are high during summer and late spring, relatively low during winter and late autumn in Gaolan River, but fluctuate irregularly in Xiangxi River; phosphorus in Gaolan River is mainly caused by non-point source pollutants, while point source pollutants of phosphorus play an important role in Xiangxi River. Soil erosion probably represents the major way of non-point source pollutants, while the drainages of phosphorus diggings and factory discharges play the most important role in the point source pollutants of phosphorus. Background

Visual processing network is one of the functional networks which have been reliably identified to consistently exist in human resting brains. In our work, we focused on this network and investigated the intrinsic properties of low frequency (0.01–0.08 Hz) fluctuations (LFFs) during changes of visual stimuli. There were two main questions to be discussed in this study: intrinsic properties of LFFs regarding (1) interactions between visual stimuli and resting-state; (2) impact of repetition rate of visual stimuli.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We analyzed scanning sessions that contained rest and visual stimuli in various repetition rates with a novel method. The method included three numerical approaches involving ICA (Independent Component Analyses), fALFF (fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuation), and Coherence, to respectively investigate the modulations of visual network pattern, low frequency fluctuation power, and interregional functional connectivity during changes of visual stimuli. We discovered when resting-state was replaced by visual stimuli, more areas were involved in visual processing, and both stronger low frequency fluctuations and higher interregional functional connectivity occurred in visual network. With changes of visual repetition rate, the number of areas which were involved in visual processing, low frequency fluctuation power, and interregional functional connectivity in this network were also modulated.

Conclusions/Significance

To combine the results of prior literatures and our discoveries, intrinsic properties of LFFs in visual network are altered not only by modulations of endogenous factors (eye-open or eye-closed condition; alcohol administration) and disordered behaviors (early blind), but also exogenous sensory stimuli (visual stimuli with various repetition rates). It demonstrates that the intrinsic properties of LFFs are valuable to represent physiological states of human brains.  相似文献
