The vegetation portion of the Florida Wetland Condition Index (FWCI), an index of biological integrity, provided consistent and repeatable measures of condition at eighteen wetlands sampled in two consecutive growing seasons. The sample wetlands reflected a gradient of adjacent land use from non-impacted reference areas to wetlands imbedded within silviculture, cattle pasture and residential areas. Wetlands were described as herbaceous depression (n = 6), forested depression (n = 5) and forested strand or floodplain wetlands (n = 7), and represented different states of succession. Even though the wetlands were unique from one another and occurred across a large geographic area in Florida, the FWCI results calculated for all the wetlands were representative of adjacent land use impacts and not sensitive to natural variation. During the duration of this study, changes in weather from drought to tropical storm conditions, as well as management activities such as fire and herbivory, impacted wetlands. These effects were apparent in the change of species composition between sampling periods; 23–56% of species were different when resampled. Even though composition changed, the proportion of indicators remained consistent. The resulting condition scores suggested a one-to-one relationship between sampling periods.  相似文献

This study is the first to report on the relationships between immature mosquitoes (larvae and pupae) and landscape and environmental habitat characteristics in wetlands associated with row crop agriculture. Indicator species analysis (ISA) was used to test for associations among mosquito species and groups of wetland sites with similar Landscape Development Intensity (LDI) values. Results indicated that Anopheles quadrimaculatus, Culex erraticus, and Psorophora columbiae were associated with agricultural wetlands (LDI > 2.0), whereas Anopheles crucians and Culex territans were associated with forested reference wetlands (LDI < 2.0) in both wet and dry years. The species fidelity to wetland type, regardless of the hydrologic regime, demonstrates these species are robust indicators of wetland condition. Data on immature mosquito assemblages were compared to selected landscape and environmental habitat variables using Akaike's Information Criterion (AICc) model selection. LDI indices, dissolved oxygen concentration, the proportion of emergent vegetation, and the proportion of bare ground in wetlands were important factors associated with the selected mosquito species. These results indicate that LDI indices are useful in predicting the distributions of disease vectors or other nuisance mosquito species across broad geographic areas. Additionally, these results suggest mosquitoes are valuable bioindicators of wetland condition that reflect land use and hydrologic variability.  相似文献

BackgroundAcute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) has a high survival rate, but cancer-related late effects in the early post-treatment years need documentation. Hospitalizations are an indicator of the burden of late effects. We identify rates and risk factors for hospitalization from five to ten years after diagnosis for childhood and adolescent ALL survivors compared to siblings and a matched population sample.Methods176 ALL survivors were diagnosed at ≤22 years between 1998 and 2008 and treated at an Intermountain Healthcare facility. The Utah Population Database identified siblings, an age- and sex-matched sample of the Utah population, and statewide inpatient hospital discharges. Sex- and birth year-adjusted Poisson models with Generalized Estimating Equations and robust standard errors calculated rates and rate ratios. Cox proportional hazards models identified demographic and clinical risk factors for hospitalizations among survivors.ResultsHospitalization rates for survivors (Rate:3.76, 95% CI = 2.22–6.36) were higher than siblings (Rate:2.69, 95% CI = 1.01–7.18) and the population sample (Rate:1.87, 95% CI = 1.13–3.09). Compared to siblings and population comparisons, rate ratios (RR) were significantly higher for survivors diagnosed between age 6 and 22 years (RR:2.87, 95% CI = 1.03–7.97 vs siblings; RR:2.66, 95% CI = 1.17–6.04 vs population comparisons). Rate ratios for diagnosis between 2004 and 2008 were significantly higher compared to the population sample (RR:4.29, 95% CI = 1.49, 12.32), but not siblings (RR:2.73, 95% CI = 0.54, 13.68). Survivors originally diagnosed with high-risk ALL did not have a significantly higher risk than siblings or population comparators. However, high-risk ALL survivors (Hazard ratio [HR]:3.36, 95% CI = 1.33–8.45) and survivors diagnosed from 2004 to 2008 (HR:9.48, 95% CI = 1.93–46.59) had the highest risk compared to their survivor counterparts.ConclusionsFive to ten years after diagnosis is a sensitive time period for hospitalizations in the ALL population. Survivors of childhood ALL require better long-term surveillance.  相似文献

Benthic, epiphytic, and phytoplanktonic diatoms, as well as soil and water physical–chemical parameters, were sampled from 70 small (average 0.86 ha) isolated depressional herbaceous wetlands located along a gradient of human disturbance in peninsular Florida to (1) compare diatom assemblage structure between algal types; (2) develop biological indicators of wetland condition; (3) examine synecological relationships between diatom structure and environmental variables, with the ultimate goal of developing an index of biological integrity using a single assemblage. Collected diatom samples were enumerated to 250 valves and identified to species or subspecies. An assessment of wetland condition was made using a landscape-scale human disturbance score (Landscape Development Intensity index, LDI), calculated for each site using land use maps and GIS.Assemblages from both impaired and reference sites were compared using blocked multi-response permutation procedures, the percent similarity index, and visually examined using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). No ecologically significant compositional differences were found within sites. Mantel's test (Mantel's r = 0.29, p < 0.0001) and NMDS (stress: 14.52, variance: 78.5%) identified epiphytic diatoms as the most responsive to human disturbance. Strong significant correlations (|rs| > 0.50, p < 0.05) were found between epiphytic NMDS site scores and soil pH, specific conductivity, water total phosphorous, and LDI, while soil pH, water color, soil TP, and turbidity were also significantly correlated (p < 0.05).Metrics to assess wetland condition were developed using epiphytic abundance data. Epiphytic taxa sensitive or tolerant to human landscape modification were identified using Indicator Species Analysis, and autecological indices relating diatom sensitivity to nutrients, pH, dissolved oxygen levels, saprobity, salinity, and trophic status were calculated. Fourteen final metrics were identified, scored on an ordinal scale, and combined into the Diatom Index of Wetland Condition (DIWC). The DIWC was highly correlated with the disturbance score (Spearman's rs = −0.71, p < 0.0001), although the results need to be validated.  相似文献

There is a major need to understand the historical condition and chemical/biological functions of the ecosystems following a conversion of wetlands to agricultural functions. To better understand the dynamics of soil total organic carbon (TOC) and phosphorus (P) during beef cattle pastures to wetland reconversion, soil core samples were collected from the beef cattle pasture and from the natural wetland at Plant City, FL, during five summer seasons (2002–2007). The levels of TOC and soil P were significantly affected by changing land use and hydrology. Draining natural wetlands to grazed pastures resulted in very pronounced reduction of TOC from 180.1 to 5.4 g g?1. Cumulative concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) in soils (1134 mg kg?1) under drained condition are two to three times lower than those in soils (2752 mg kg?1) under flooded condition over the periods of land use reconversion. There was a declining trend (r = 0.82**; p  0.01) in total soil P from natural wetland (763 mg kg?1) to altered pastures (340 mg kg?1), largely as organic-bound P (natural wetland, 48%; grazed pastures, 44%; altered pastures, 29%). These results are important in establishing baseline information on soil properties in pasture and wetland prior to restoring and reconverting pasture back to wetland conditions. The results further suggest that changes in soil properties due to changing land use and hydrologic conditions (drying and re-wetting) could be long lasting.  相似文献

Using data collected for the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2011 National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA), we developed separate multimetric indices (MMIs) for vegetation, soil, algae taxa, and water to assess condition of freshwater wetlands in the northeastern US. This study represents the first attempt at developing multiple biotic and abiotic MMIs of wetland condition over this large of an area, and is only possible because of the high quality data collected by the NWCA. We chose metrics that distinguished between reference and most disturbed sites, had a signal:noise ratio > 2, and were not strongly correlated with other metrics, latitude, or longitude. The vegetation and soil MMIs were the best performing indices, with good separation between reference and most disturbed sites, and included commonly used condition metrics (e.g., pH and P concentration for soil, and percent cover of exotic species for vegetation). The algae MMI was the weakest index, with considerable overlap between reference and most disturbed sites. For areas smaller than our study, algae taxa may be suitable for wetland MMIs. However, in our study area, many algae taxa followed strong latitudinal or longitudinal gradients, and could not be considered for the algae MMI. Small sample size and several metrics with a high signal:noise ratio were the major limitations of the water MMI. We also examined how well landscape (level 1) and rapid assessment (level 2) metrics predicted MMIs using random forest regression. Agricultural land use surrounding wetlands was an important predictor for all four MMIs, although the soil, algae and water MMI models performed best when intensive (level 3) vegetation metrics were also included in the random forest regression models. Based on these results, we recommend wetland assessment programs employ a combination of landscape and rapid assessment monitoring at many sites, along with level 3 monitoring at a subset of sites. We developed these MMIs to evaluate freshwater wetland condition for a long-term monitoring program in Acadia National Park. These MMIs are also applicable to a range of wetland types covering 11 states in the northeastern United States and can be calculated using a downloadable spreadsheet that calculates and rates each MMI using raw metric values.  相似文献

Nitrate-nitrogen retention as a result of river water diversions is compared in experimental wetland basins in Ohio for 18 wetland-years (9 years × 2 wetland basins) and a large wetland complex in Louisiana (1 wetland basin × 4 years). The Ohio wetlands had an average nitrate-nitrogen retention of 39 g-N m−2 year−1, while the Louisiana wetland had a slightly higher retention of 46 g-N m−2 year−1 for a similar loading rate area. When annual nitrate retention data from these sites are combined with 26 additional wetland-years of data from other wetland sites in the Basin Mississippi River (Ohio, Illinois, and Louisiana), a robust regression model of nitrate retention versus nitrate loading is developed. The model provides an estimate of 22,000 km2 of wetland creation and restoration needed in the Mississippi River Basin to remove 40% of the nitrogen estimated to discharge into the Gulf of Mexico from the river basin. This estimated wetland restoration is 65 times the published net gain of wetlands in the entire USA over the past 10 years as enforced by the Clean Water Act and is four times the cumulative total of the USDA Wetland Reserve Program wetland protection and restoration activity for the entire USA.  相似文献

Blastocystis sp. is a common gut-dwelling protist of both humans and animals. A cross-sectional survey among humans and their dogs was conducted to determine the prevalence of Blastocystis infection and to characterize the subtype (ST) distribution in an urban community in the Philippines. Fecal specimens from 1,271 humans and 145 dogs were collected and inoculated in diphasic culture medium. Prevalence of Blastocystis by culture was 13.0% (95% CI = 11.2–15.0) and 14.5% (95% CI = 9.6–21.2) for humans and dogs, respectively. A total of 168 culture isolates were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with seven pairs of ST-specific sequence-tagged-site (STS) primers. In humans, the ST present in this study were ST1 with 22.6% (95% CI = 17.2–29.0), ST2 with 3.1% (95% CI = 1.3–6.7), ST3 with 41.4% (95% CI = 34.9–48.6), ST4 with 14.8% (95% CI = 10.5–20.6), ST5 with 4.1% (95% CI = 2.0–8.0), and unknown ST with 13.9% (95% CI = 9.6–19.4). In dogs, the ST present in this study were ST1 with 4.3% (95% CI = 0.0–29.0), ST2 with 8.7% (95% CI = 1.3–28.0), ST3 with 17.4% (95% CI = 6.4–37.7), ST4 with 13.0% (95% CI = 3.7–33.0), ST5 with 13.0% (95% CI = 3.7–33.0), and unknown ST with 47.8% (95% CI = 29.2–67.0). This is the first study that reported Blastocystis ST4 in human and canine hosts in the Philippines.  相似文献

The development of bioindicators for wetlands, especially ephemerally hydrated depressional and isolated wetlands, can be problematic because of seasonal changes in hydrology and target indicator organism biology. To determine if benthic diatoms could be used as a multi-season biological indicator of wetland condition in isolated forested wetlands of Florida, USA, 11 wetlands were sampled twice during a 5-month period, once when dry, then again when hydrated. Sites sampled when dry had significantly higher diatom taxa richness at genus and species levels. Non-metric multidimensional scaling and multiple response permutation process analyses resulted in no obvious or significant wet/dry grouping of species or genus level abundance data. Five of seven diatom metrics of the Florida Wetland Condition Index (FWCI) for depressional forested wetlands were significantly linearly correlated (p < 0.05), while only one of seven metrics (a dissolved oxygen indicator) had a significantly different mean in paired t-test analyses. The final FWCI was significantly correlated (Pearson's = 0.85, p < 0.001) between wet and dry sites, and no difference was found in mean FWCI score between wet and dry sites (t = −1.98, p = 0.076), suggesting that with additional research, benthic diatoms may be used to monitor and assess wetland condition regardless of season or site hydrologic conditions.  相似文献

BackgroundMeasurement of the biomarker copeptin may help identify disease severity and risk of mortality for a various diseases. This study sought to determine the relationship between copeptin and all-cause mortality of patients with cardio-cerebrovascular disease.MethodsDatabase of Medline and Web of Science were searched for studies with data involving the baseline copeptin levels and subsequent all-cause mortality outcomes. The pooled HRs of all-cause mortality were calculated and presented with 95%CIs. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were conducted to explore the possible sources of heterogeneity.ResultsData from 14,395 participants were derived from 28 prospective studies. Higher copeptin significantly increased the risk of all-cause mortality (per unit copeptin: HR = 1.020, 95%CI = 1.004–1.036; log unit copeptin: HR = 2.884, 95%CI = 1.844–4.512; categorical copeptin: HR = 3.371, 95%CI = 2.077–5.472). Subgroup analysis indicated that the risk of all-cause death was higher in cerebrovascular patients (per unit copeptin: HR = 2.537, 95%CI = 0.956–6.731; log unit copeptin: HR = 3.419, 95%CI = 2.391–4.888) than cardiovascular patients (per unit copeptin: HR = 1.011, 95%CI = 1.002–1.020; log unit copeptin: HR = 2.009, 95%CI = 1.119–3.608).ConclusionCopeptin is associated with all-cause mortality of patients with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Our study suggests that copeptin seems to be a promising novel biomarker for prediction of mortality in cardio-cerebrovascular patients, especially for cerebrovascular patients.  相似文献

This review critically evaluates indicators of tidal wetland condition based on 36 indicator development studies and indicators developed as part of U.S. state tidal wetland monitoring programs. Individual metrics were evaluated based on relative scores on two sets of evaluation factors. A rigor score evaluated metric development based on conceptual relevance, indicator development method, degree of independent validation, and temporal and spatial extent tested. An applicability score evaluated metrics based on cost of data collection, probable spatial extent of applicability, technical complexity, and indicator responsiveness. The majority of indicators could be classified as biotic condition indicators (81%), with vegetation (37%) and macroinvertebrate (28%) metrics composing the largest proportion. Most metrics provided a conceptual model or scientific justification (97%), were developed by correlation to environmental gradients (46%), were tested over multiple seasons or years (49%) and at multiple sites (88%). Few were independently validated (18%). Average rigor score was 10 (on a scale of 0–25) and ranged between 1 and 21. Highest rigor scores were for trematode community metrics (community similarity index, species richness) and metrics of grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio) individuals (gene expression, relative fecundity, embryo hatching success, larval survival). Most metrics had a high cost of data collection (63%), required field and laboratory processing (84%), would be applicable across the U.S. (72%), and were responsive to the variable of interest (44%). Mean applicability score was 4.9 (range: 2–8). Highest scores were found for metrics that only required field collection of data using simple or no instrumentation. Lowest scoring metrics required expensive equipment, specialized taxonomic knowledge, complex laboratory analysis, and/or culturing of organisms. Scores for individual metrics were grouped by indicator, then averaged and rescaled between 0 and 100 to provide a composite evaluation of the indicator they measured. Among major indicator types, biotic indicators had the highest rigor scores (mean = 44, range 20–79), followed by indicators of chemical/physical characteristics (mean = 36, range 16–56), landscape condition (mean = 31, range 24–37), and hydrology/geomorphology indicators (mean = 21, range 4–52). In contrast, biotic indicators scored lowest for applicability (mean = 58, range 25–100) and indicators of landscape condition scored highest. The results of this review suggest that the development and selection of tidal wetland indicators could be vastly improved by employing a standardized development methodology that provides uniform information about each indicator. In addition, tidal wetland indicator research should focus on the development of indicators of ecological processes and disturbance regimes.  相似文献

Background: Studies investigating the association between genetic polymorphism of glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1) and risk of colorectal cancer have reported conflicting results. In order to clarify the effect of GSTT1 polymorphism on the risk of developing colorectal cancer, we carried out a meta-analysis using published data to obtain more precise estimates of risk. Methods: Electronic searches of PubMed and EMBASE were conducted to select studies for this meta-analysis. Papers were included if they were observational studies investigating the association between GSTT1 polymorphism and colorectal cancer risk. The principal outcome measure was the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for the risk of colorectal cancer associated with GSTT1 null genotype. Results: We identified 30 eligible studies, which included 7635 cases and 12,911 controls. The combined results based on all studies showed that there was a statistically significant link between GSTT1 null genotype and colorectal cancer risk (OR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.03–1.40). In the analysis of ethnic groups, we observed distinct differences associated with GSTT1 null genotype, the pooled odds ratios for the GSTT1 polymorphism were 1.32 in Caucasians (95% CI = 1.09–1.58) and 1.03 in Asians (95% CI = 0.81–1.32). As far as concerned the interaction between GSTT1 genotype and colorectal cancer risk in relation to smoking history, there was no increase in risk for smokers or nonsmokers with the GSTT1 null genotype (smokers: OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 0.80–1.60, nonsmokers: OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.71–1.38). When stratifying by the location of colorectal cancer, we found that there was a statistically significant link in rectal cancer (OR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.09–2.07), but not in colon cancer (OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 0.94–1.88). No associations could be detected between null GSTT1 polymorphism and age, sex, tumor stage and differentiation. Conclusion: Our current study demonstrates that GSTT1 null genotype is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer, specifically, among Caucasians.  相似文献

Wetlands provide a large pool of organic matter and nutrients, and are important for maintaining material cycle balances in terrestrial ecosystems, and also help retard climate change. Land use changes in wetlands have greatly disturbed the natural evolution of wetland ecosystems. Wetland drainage and reclamation alters the physical, chemical and biological conditions of the wetland, thus significantly disturbing the material cycles, leading to significant changes in the biogeochemical processes of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the wetland. The wetlands in the Sanjiang Plain are the largest area of fresh wetlands in China. However, the area has experienced major land uses changes since the 1950s; areas of the wetland have been drained and converted to arable land. Some studies have been conducted into the effects of land use change on material cycles in the Sanjiang Plain wetlands but few reports have discussed the C/N and C/P ratios and pH values as indicators of wetland degradation due to land use changes. We selected eight land uses: humus marsh (HM), marshy meadow (MM), drained humus marsh (DHM), drained marshy meadow (DMM), tillage land (TL), abandoned land (AL), natural secondary forest (NSF) and artificial forest (AF), in the Honghe area of the Sanjiang Plain. We studied changes in the total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), C/N and C/P ratios and pH values in topsoil (0–20 cm) of these eight different land uses. The possible mechanisms underlying the changes, and the significance of the C/N and C/P ratios as indicators of soil quality were also discussed. In the natural wetland, the TOC, TN and TP concentrations in the soil were high, with values of 203.5 g/kg, 20.2 g/kg and 1.44 g/kg, respectively, in HM; and 59.2 g/kg, 5.28 g/kg and 0.83 g/kg, respectively, in MM. Drainage of the HM has led to decreases in the TOC, TN and TP concentrations of about 50%. Significant decreases were also observed in TOC, TN and TP for NSF and AF compared to HM. Drained MM led to decreases in the TOC and TN of about 45%, but had little effect on TP. Marshy meadow that had been drained for more than 10 years experienced an exponential decline in TOC, TN and TP, with decreases of more than 60% for TOC and TN, and 20% for TP. However, after being abandoned for a short time (5 years), the TOC, TN and TP concentrations in soil experienced little change because poor water conditions combined with low productivity led to a large loss of soil organic matter. Land use change in the marsh areas has led to a decrease in C/N and C/P ratios of the soil, which are positively related to TOC and TN with different land uses (P < 0.05). Marsh reclamation has led to decreasing C/N and C/P ratios in soil and increasing pH values, which are negatively related to TOC, TN and TP (P < 0.05). Changes in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in soil with different land uses were mainly regulated by water-heat conditions and microbial activity, while the C/N and C/P ratios were mainly regulated by substrate availability. Our results suggest that C/N and C/P ratios and the pH value could be used as indicators to evaluate the quality and nutrient status of wetland soil under different land uses.  相似文献

The present contribution encompasses the first case study on the aquatic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators for assessing the health of Asan wetland (area 3.2 km2), located in the foothills of Central Himalayas, India. Monthly sampling from all the sampling sites in five replicates was made for a period of 12 months (July 2002–June 2003) at 9:00–11:00 h. A total of 32 species of macroinvertebrates were found with the Ephemeroptera and Gastropoda being the most abundant component of invertebrates communities. The Shannon–Wiener diversity index calculated for macroinvertebrates ranged from 3.50 to 4.61. Seasonal fluctuations in the density of macroinvertebrates revealed maximum density (451–503 ind m?2) during winter and minimum (126–143 ind m?2) during monsoon season. The density of macroinvertebrates was influenced by the anthropogenic disturbances and water level fluctuations causing disturbance in the littoral zone of the wetland. The statistical relationships between turbidity, transparency, dissolved oxygen and water temperature and macroinvertebrates of Asan wetland were also computed for assessing the impact of anthropogenic disturbances on macroinvertebrates.  相似文献

BackgroundPopulation-based studies of breast cancer often aggregate all Asians into a single category termed Asian/Pacific Islander (API).Purpose(1) Describe the demographic and clinicopathologic features of early breast cancer utilizing all eight ER/PR/HER2 subtypes among white, black, Hispanic, American Indian, seven Asian ethnicities, and the aggregate API category; (2) ascertain the risk of the ER+/PR+/HER2+, ER−/PR−/HER2−, and ER−/PR−/HER2+ subtypes when compared with the ER+/PR+/HER2− subtype, among seven Asian ethnicities versus non-Hispanic white women and (3) contrast the results with the risk of these same subtypes when using the aggregate API category.MethodsUsing the California Cancer Registry, we identified 225,441 cases of stages 1–4 first primary female invasive breast cancer. Logistic regression was used to assess the association of race with the ER+/PR+/HER2+, ER−/PR−/HER2− (triple-negative), and the ER−/PR−/HER2+ subtypes versus the ER+/PR+/HER2− when adjusted for stage, age, tumor grade, and socioeconomic status. Models were fit separately for each subtype. Odds ratios for the seven Asian ethnicities and the aggregate API category using non-Hispanic white women as the reference category were computed.ResultsThere was an increased risk of the ER+/PR+/HER2+ subtype for the combined API category (OR = 1.16; 95% CI = 1.09–1.23). But only Southeast Asians (OR = 1.17; 95% CI = 1.04–1.31), Filipino (OR = 1.23; 95% CI = 1.12–1.36), and Korean (OR = 1.63; 95% CI = 1.38–1.99) women had an increased risk of this subtype. The reduced risk of the triple-negative subtype seen in APIs (OR = 0.84; 95% CI = 0.79–0.90) was only noted in Chinese (OR = 0.80; 95% CI = 0.70–0.91) and Filipino (OR = 0.65; 95% CI = 0.58–0.73) women whereas Indian Continent (OR = 1.25; 95% CI = 1.01–1.53) women had an increased risk of the triple-negative subtype.The race × stage interaction was statistically significant for the ER−/PR−/HER2+ subtype (p < 0.05). When stratified by stage, there was no statistically significant association of race with subtype in stages 3 and 4. APIs had an increased risk of the ER−/PR−/HER2+ subtype in stage 1 (OR = 1.59; 95% CI = 1.37–1.75) and stage 2 (OR = 1.42; 95% CI = 1.28–1.58) but this risk was not seen in Pacific Islander, Indian Continent, and Japanese women for either stage.ConclusionsAmong the Asian ethnicities, there is marked variability in the demographic and clinicopathologic features of breast cancer. Use of the ER/PR/HER2 subtypes reveals that the risk of the ER−/PR−/HER2−, ER+/PR+/HER2+, and ER−/PR−/HER2+ subtypes varies among the Asian population. BackgroundEpidemiological studies on anthropometric features and cutaneous melanoma risk in women yielded inconsistent results, with few analyses involving prospective cohort data. Our objective was to explore several anthropometric characteristics in relation to the risk of melanoma in women.MethodsWe prospectively analysed data from E3N, a French cohort involving 98,995 women born in 1925–1950. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires sent biennially over 1990–2008. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed using Cox proportional hazards regression models, adjusted for age, number of naevi, freckling, skin and hair colour, skin sensitivity to sun exposure, residential sun exposure, and physical activity.ResultsHeight was positively associated with melanoma in age-adjusted models only (RR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.05–1.55 for ≥164 cm vs. <160 cm; P for trend = 0.02). After full adjustment, there was a significantly positive relationship between sitting-to-standing height ratio and melanoma risk (RR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.06–1.86 for ≥0.533 vs. <0.518; P for trend = 0.02). A large body shape at menarche was inversely associated with the risk of melanoma (RR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.62–0.98; compared with lean). However, weight, body mass index, body surface area, waist or hip circumference, sitting height or leg length were not significantly associated with risk.ConclusionThese results suggest that height, sitting-to-standing height ratio and body shape at menarche may be associated with melanoma risk. Further research is required to confirm these relationships and better understand the underlying mechanisms.  相似文献

Biotic indices are widely applied for conservation and management of aquatic resources since they allow water resources monitoring agencies to get insight in complex biological data and yield policy relevant information. Despite the worldwide popularity of biotic indices, little information on their use and applicability in Eastern Africa is available. Here, we develop a multimetric index based on macroinvertebrates to assess the ecological condition of natural wetlands in Southwest Ethiopia. Index development was based on a dataset of 222 samples collected during two consecutive years from 63 sites located at eight different wetlands. We used physico-chemical and hydro-morphological variables (land use pattern, habitat alteration, hydrological modification and chemical water quality) to classify sites as reference or degraded. We tested a total of 58 potential metrics representing various aspects of macroinvertebrate assemblages including family richness, composition, tolerance measures and presence and abundance of functional feeding groups. Metrics were selected for the development of a final index based on their sensitivity in discriminating reference from impaired sites, strength of correlation with the anthropogenic disturbance gradient, chemical measurements, and the degree of redundancy. Metrics retained for the final index were:overall family richness, family richness of Ephemeroptera, Odonata and Trichoptera (EOT), and percentage of filterer–collectors. The final index, derived from the sum of three metric scores, was divided into five water quality classes (very bad, bad, moderate, good and very good). Our final multimetric macroinvertebrate index (MMI) distinguished well between reference and impaired wetland sites and showed a significant negative response to a gradient of disturbances (R2 = 0.86, p < 0.05). Moreover, it classified a validation dataset accurately with a correctly classified instances of 80% and a Cohen's Kappa value of 0.6. This MMI can be considered as a robust and sensitive tool that can be applied to evaluate the ecological condition of natural wetlands in Ethiopia, where wetland resources are under high pressure as a result of agricultural activities such as grazing and urbanization.  相似文献

Seasonal dynamics of concentrations of reserve carbohydrates (starch, sucrose, glucose, fructose and their sum denoted as total non-structural carbohydrates, TNC) were followed in five reed stands of Kis-Balaton wetland area in Hungary. The stands included three stands of tall and robust reed, situated in the Ingói area, and two stands of short and subtle reed situated in the downstream part. While both the seasonal pattern and the proportions of single carbohydrate species corresponded to findings for other sites, the absolute concentrations were markedly lower as compared to other European reed stands except lake Fertö in Hungary. The seasonal minimum values ranged from 54 to 87 mg g−1 dry weight. During the seasonal minimum, glucose reached the lowest concentrations (down to 0.01 mg g−1 dry weight) of all carbohydrates measured. The seasonal maximum concentrations of TNC reached 160–270 mg g−1 dry weight. Maximum TNC standing stock ranged from 240 to 520 g m−2, and was depleted by 60–80% during the period of spring shoot growth. It is proposed that the remaining TNC pool may not suffice to support complete recovery after a subsequent catastrophic event.  相似文献

Several ecological indices have been developed to evaluate the wetland quality in the Laurentian Great Lakes. One index, the water quality index (WQI) can be widely applied to wetlands and produces accurate measurements of wetland condition. The WQI measures the degree of water quality degradation as a result of nutrient enrichment and road runoff. The wetland fish index (WFI), wetland zooplankton index (WZI), and the wetland macrophyte index (WMI), are all derived from the statistical relationships of biotic communities along a gradient of deteriorating water quality. Compared to the WQI, these indices are less labor-intensive, cost less, and have the potential to produce immediate results. We tested the relative sensitivity of each biotic index for 32 Great Lakes wetlands relative to the WQI and to each other. The WMI (r2 = 0.84) and WFI (r2 = 0.75) had significant positive relationships (P < 0.0001) with the WQI in a linear and polynomial fashion. Slopes of the WMI and WFI were similar when comparing the polynomial regressions (ANCOVA; P = 0.117) but intercepts were significantly different (P = 0.004). The WZI had a positive relationship with the WQI in degraded wetlands and a negative relationship in minimally impacted wetlands. The strengths and weaknesses of each index can be explained by the interactions among fish, zooplankton, aquatic plants and water chemistry. The distribution of different species indicative of low and high quality in each index provides insight into the relative wetland community composition in different parts of the Great Lakes and helps to explain the differences in index scores when different organisms are used. Our findings suggest that the WMI and WFI produce comparable results but the WZI should not be used in the minimally impacted wetlands without further study.  相似文献

Stress system activity in early life can have long-term effects on neurodevelopment. The main aim of this study was to assess the association of child evening salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase basal levels at 14 months of age with longer-term neuropsychological development at 4 years in a low-risk population-based birth cohort derived from the INMA (Environment and Childhood) project in Spain. We included 186 parent-children pairs with information on both stress system activity and neurodevelopment. Both stress markers at 14 months of age showed an association with neuropsychological development at 4 years. Salivary cortisol showed a sex-specific pattern of association. In girls, cortisol levels at 14 months were negatively associated with cognitive development [long-term declarative memory (β =  17.8, p = 0.028; 95% CI =  33.2 to − 2.5); executive function (β =  9.8, p = 0.08; 95% CI =  21 to 1)] and gross motor development (β =  13; p = 0.022; 95% CI =  24 to − 2), whereas in boys cortisol levels were negatively associated with socioemotional development [autistic-like behaviours: Incidence Rate Ratio (IRR) = 1.6, p = 0.039; 95% CI = 1.01 to 2.41]. Salivary alpha-amylase was positively associated with socioemotional development in boys only [social competence (β = 2.11, p = 0.013; 95% CI = 0.47 to 3.72), autistic-like behaviours (IRR = 0.93, p = 0.042; 95% CI = 0.87 to 0.99) and hyperactivity symptoms (IRR = 0.81, p = 0.021; 95% CI = 0.69 to 0.97)]. These results suggest that stress system activity in early life is associated with longer-term neurodevelopment and that sex is an important factor in this relationship.  相似文献
