Summary The town of Belluno has a high number of wild and cultivated plants whose pollen has various degrees of importance from an allergological point of view.In this preliminary study we have taken into consideration the distribution and the flowering period of these species, correlating them with the data on the quantity and type of pollen collected by a sampler placed on the roof of the City Hospital, and also with the results of the allergometric tests (Prick Tests) carried out in the Broncho-Pneumological Department during the first 9 months of 1990.The wild specis of spring-flowering trees which can be found in the woods surrounding the city (Fagaceae, Betulaceae, Corylaceae) and along the gravel banks of the Piave river (Salicaceae) as well as the Graminaceae which are widespread both in the urban area and in the fields outside the city and some cultivated species (Robinia, Tilia, Acer) which flower a little later, are the species which produce most pollen and which are held responsible for allergies. However, only the pollen of the Graminaceae gave rise to cases of mono-sensitivity (16%) (apart from one case of Betulaceae and Corylaceae and one case ofArtemisia as well asDermatophagoides) (9.7%). For the other species, the positive reactions were associated with the positive reactions to the pollen of other species belonging to different families and/or to other factors.  相似文献

Summary Gramineae pollination from a pollen monitoring station located in the eastern suburb of Perugia and meteorological correlations are reported. The data refers to the year 1989. Grass pollen peak pollination was from May to July; in this period the influence of relative humidity and of temperature on pollen concentration was very high. Phenological observations, to identify the time of maximum stamen extension in the most common genera in the area, are also reported. During the period of investigation the counts of pollen grains over four-hour periods showed a regular diurnal rhythm with peaks of concentration in the four-hour period 16.00–20.00. Aerosporological data and meteorological data related to four-hour periods were correlated following different criteria.  相似文献

The white smut fungus (Entyloma ageratinae) and the gall fly (Procecidochares alani) were released in New Zealand in 1998 and 2001 respectively to suppress mist flower (Ageratina riparia). The fungus established and spread rapidly, crossing 80 km of sea to Great Barrier Island within 2 years. The mean number of P. alani galls increased exponentially to 1.96/stem at release sites, but dispersal was slow. The impact of the biocontrol agents was monitored once annually from 1998/99 to 2003/04, at up to 51 sites in the North Island. The mean percentage of live leaves infected with fungus rapidly reached nearly 60%. Maximum plant height declined significantly. In heavy infestations, mean percentage cover of mist flower declined from 81 to 1.5%. Galls were only recorded towards the end of the impact study, and at low mean numbers. As mist flower declined, the species richness and mean percentage cover of native plants increased. In contrast, the species richness and mean percentage cover of exotic plants (excluding mist flower) did not change significantly. Many plant species colonizing the plots were important native mid- or late-successional shrubs or trees. With few exceptions, the exotic plant species common in the plots were not weeds that appeared to threaten native forest habitats. There was only a weak “replacement weed effect” from the potentially serious invader African club moss (Selaginella kraussiana). These data, together with reports of reduced threats to rare endemic plants from mist flower, suggest this rapid, well-monitored weed biocontrol program was very successful.  相似文献

Allelopathy of filamentous green algae (FGA) has been less studied than that of macrophytes. Little Budworth Pool, Cheshire, UK is a small, shallow, clear-water lake with high TP concentrations, very high NO3-N concentrations, only moderate phytoplankton density, high FGA growth (mainly Spirogyra sp.) and no submerged plants. Experiments were carried out to test the possible allelopathic effects of Spirogyra on the phytoplankton of this lake and on a submerged plant Elodea nuttallii. Changes in phytoplankton growth, phytoplankton species dynamics and species composition were apparently not influenced by allelopathy of live or decaying Spirogyra. A shift from diatom (Cyclotella sp) – cryptomonad (Chroomonas acuta and Cryptomonas erosa) dominance to Chlorococcales (Micractinium pusillum, Monoraphidium contortum and Scenedesmus opoliensis) – Volvocales (Chlorogonium elongatum and Pandorina morum) dominance was recorded in both control and FGA treatments, suggesting an effect of nutrient enrichment. Nutrient concentrations and differences in competitiveness among phytoplankton species can also explain differences in their growth rates in Spirogyra filtrate. Spirogyra also did not influence apex number per plant, shoot length or growth rate of E. nuttallii. This FGA species probably cannot control phytoplankton or E. nuttallii growth in nutrient rich conditions through allelopathy.  相似文献

To reconstruct the vegetation and fire history of the Upper Engadine, two continuous sediment cores from Lej da Champfèr and Lej da San Murezzan (Upper Engadine Valley, southeastern Switzerland) were analysed for pollen, plant macrofossils, charcoal and kerogen. The chronologies of the cores are based on 38 radiocarbon dates. Pollen and macrofossil data suggest a rapid afforestation with Betula, Pinus sylvestris, Pinus cembra, and Larix decidua after the retreat of the glaciers from the lake catchments 11,000 cal years ago. This vegetation type persisted until ca. 7300 cal b.p. (5350 b.c.) when Picea replaced Pinus cembra. Pollen indicative of human impact suggests that in this high-mountain region of the central Alps strong anthropogenic activities began during the Early Bronze Age (3900 cal b.p., 1950 b.c.). Local human settlements led to vegetational changes, promoting the expansion of Larix decidua and Alnus viridis. In the case of Larix, continuing land use and especially grazing after fire led to the formation of Larix meadows. The expansion of Alnus viridis was directly induced by fire, as evidenced by time-series analysis. Subsequently, the process of forest conversion into open landscapes continued for millennia and reached its maximum at the end of the Middle Ages at around 500 cal b.p. (a.d. 1450).  相似文献

Indirect immunofluorescence assays were conducted on cryotome sections of four terrestrial slug species from three distinct phylogenetic groups, Arion ater (L.), Arion hortensis (Férussac), Tandonia (Milax) budapestensis (Hazay), and Deroceras reticulatum (Müller) using monoclonal antibodies for two glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), heparan sulphate, and chondroitin sulphate. Specific staining for a heparan sulphate-like component was demonstrated in the foot and tail regions of each species and was particularly intense in A. ater and A. hortensis, notably in the epidermis and associated mucus-like material, and in mucus-like material from the pedal gland region of the latter species. Subsequent studies with A. ater confirmed the presence of heparan-sulphate–like activity in the caudal gland duct region. No evidence of specific staining for chondroitin sulphate-like activity was found in any of the slug species. This work suggests that a specific GAG, or a group of closely related GAGs, is a common component of mucus in a range of slug species and of different types of mucus, including trail (pedal) mucus and the more viscous mucus produced by the caudal gland.  相似文献

The occurrence of Alexandrium taylori and Alexandrium peruvianum is reported for the first time in Malaysia waters. The Malaysian A. taylori isolates were pyriform in shape with a transdiameter range of 36–40 μm and a cell length range of 33–37 μm. The first apical plate (1′) was pentagonal with two distinctive anterior margins. No direct connection between 1′ and the apical pore complex was observed. The posterior sulcal plate (S.p.) was large, elongated and oblique to the right with anterior projections. The ventral pore (vp) was relatively large and situated at a confluence point of 1′, the second apical (2′) and the fourth apical (4′) plates. Cells of A. peruvianum were slightly anteriorly and posteriorly compressed. S.p. had an irregular pentagonal shape, with the anterior margin divided into 2 portions. 1′ was boomerang-shaped with a large and truncated ventral pore in the middle right margin. The anterior right margin of 1′ was straight. The sixth precingular plate (6″) was wider than long. The anterior sulcal plate (S.a.) was triangular and lacked a left portion extension. In laboratory cultures, both A. taylori and A. peruvianum produced paralytic shellfish toxins, with GTX4 and GTX6 as the predominant toxin, respectively. This is the first report of PSP toxins production for both species as well as the occurrences in Malaysia waters.  相似文献

Summary Korthalsella (Viscaceae) is a dwarf mistletoe attached to its host branch by a single haustorium. Plants are leafless with flattened or cylindrical stems that function in photosynthesis. When a fresh haustorium is cut the sucker within the host appears bright green. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that this greening is due to chloroplasts, but that their organization differs from those of the aerial stem. The three representatives of Korthalsella endemic to New Zealand were the main species investigated. In the stem, chloroplasts have short stacks of cylindrical grana interconnected by stroma thylakoids typical of normal chloroplasts. Sucker chloroplasts have a more variable organization, with most containing extensive granal stacks and poorly differentiated stroma thylakoids. These granal thylakoids exhibit extensive partitions formed by appression of adjacent membranes. Some sucker plastids also approach etioplasts in having a prominent prolamellar body from which radiate thylakoids with short partitions. Sucker chloroplasts usually contain a few large starch grains, plastoglobuli, and sometimes also a stroma centre. The extensive granal thylakoids in sucker chloroplasts of Korthalsella resemble that found in certain shade plants and tissue grown under low light conditions. Sucker chloroplasts probably have a low level of photosynthesis. This activity might provide a local source of osmotically active material used to assist transport between host and parasite.  相似文献

In the temperate region temperature is the main factor influencing the germination period of plant species. The purpose of this study was to examine effects of constant and fluctuating temperatures on dormancy and germination under laboratory and field conditions in the three wetland species Lycopus europaeus, Mentha aquatica and Stachys palustris. The results should give indications if the temperature-dependent regulation of dormancy and germination is phylogenetically constrained. Tests for germination requirements showed a minimum temperature for germination of 9 °C in Mentha and 12 °C in Lycopus and Stachys, and a maximum temperature of 33 °C for Lycopus and 36 °C for Mentha and Stachys. Fluctuating temperatures promoted germination in all three species but the amplitude required for high germination (>50%) differed: it was 8 °C in Mentha, 10 °C in Stachys and 14 °C in Lycopus (mean temperature 22 °C). The effect of temperatures on the level of dormancy was examined in the laboratory by imbibing seeds at temperatures between 3 °C and 18 °C for periods between 2 and 28 weeks, as well as by a 30-month burial period, followed by germination tests at various temperatures, in light and darkness. In the laboratory only low temperatures (≤12 °C) relieved primary dormancy in seeds of Lycopus, while in Mentha and Stachys also higher temperatures lead to an increase of germination. Dormancy was only induced in Lycopus seeds after prolonged imbibition at 12 °C in the laboratory. Buried seeds of all species exhibited annual dormancy cycles with lower germination in summer and higher germination from autumn to spring. Exhumed seeds, however, showed considerable differences in periods of germination success. Dormancy was relieved when ambient temperatures were below 12 °C. Ambient temperatures that caused an induction of dormancy varied depending on species and test condition, but even low temperatures (8 °C) were effective. At high test temperatures (25 °C) in light, exhumed seeds of all three species showed high germination throughout the year. The three species showed various differences in the effects of temperatures on dormancy and germination. Similarities in dormancy and germination found among the species are in common with other spring-germinating species occurring in wetlands, so it seems that the temperature dependent regulation of dormancy and germination are related to habitat and not to phylogenetic relatedness.  相似文献

Biological control of the intermediate hosts of schistosomiasis by means of the introduction oa a competitor snail Helisoma duryi has been suggested. The effect of conditioning by Biomphalaria camerunensis and H. duryi respectively on growth and egg laying capacity of B. camerunensis and on the hatchability of B. camerunensis egg masses was compared. No differences were found besides an indication of a growth promoting effect of B. camerunensis conditioning.B. camerunensis egg masses were found to be much more sensitive to mechanical interference from snails than were H. duryi egg masses. Both juvenile and adult H. duryi caused a great reduction in the number of B. camerunensis egg masses and adult B. camerunensis showed a great tendency to destroy its own egg masses. Newly hatched B. camerunensis appeared to be destroyed to a greater extent by adult H. duryi than by adult B. camerunensis.  相似文献

Zygaena viciae, the New Forest burnet moth, has only one population in Britain, in western Scotland. Here it was discovered in1963 and its population sustained itself, before declining seriously from 1980 to 1990. A survey in 1990 discovered at most 20 adult moths and it was clear that the site had become seriously over-grazed. A fence was erected to exclude sheep, with variable success until 1996, since when it has remained effective. Vegetation speedily changed from 1990 onwards, including re-establishment and spread of the main larval foodplant, Lathyrus pratensis. The moth population remained low until 1997, since which time it has dramatically increased, reaching an estimated 8500–10,200 in 2003. However, with only one site the moth remains threatened and establishment on new sites is now a priority.  相似文献

The influence of management and nutrient availability on the vegetation dynamics of heathlands characterised by Calluna vulgaris and Erica tetralix were studied in three mountain sites in Northern Spain. A total of 90 plots (1 m2 each) received different combinations of cutting and twice the estimated background atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (56 kg ha−1 yr−1). One of the two dominant ericaceous species was selectively cut by hand at ground level and their regeneration compared in the presence or absence of the other. The results after 2 years showed significant effects of the fertiliser on the vegetation cover, mainly by favouring perennial herbaceous species. There were less noteworthy effects on the number of flowers and on the annual growth of the ericaceous species. It is concluded that, in the short term, increased nutrients alone, at twice the estimated current atmospheric deposition for the area, will not alter significantly the composition of the mountain heathlands. However, once the stands reach the mature phase, the capacity of the community to regenerate after a severe disturbance diminishes. A drastic impact, such as cutting may not result in re-growth of the same shrub species but in replacement by herbaceous species, which will also benefit from the increased nutrients.  相似文献

The ecology of the aquatic gastropods Bithynia tentaculata, Gyraulus albus, Planorbis planorbis and Lymnaea peregra in North West England was investigated over 13 months at sites chosen for their wide range of water chemistry. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the significance to the mollusc distributions of a variety of physico-chemical factors. Biotic factors were not considered. The species had similar life cycles, with little difference between populations within a species. B. tentaculata could live for over a year, and the major water chemistry variable was potassium (+), where the sign is that of the regression coefficient. G. albus could also survive into a second year and the major variable was mud substratum type (+). Rock substratum type (-) was the most important factor for P. planorbis. There was a slight difference in the life cycles of L. peregra in hard and medium compared with soft waters and the major water chemistry variable was magnesium (-).  相似文献

Since the massive bloom in 1988 in the North Sea, the prymnesiophyte flagellate Chrysochromulina polylepis Manton et Parke has been known for its ichtyotoxicity. Laboratory experiments using two different clones of C. polylepis were conducted in a comparative approach. Both clones were nearly similar in size and shape, but differed in their toxicity, as demonstrated by the Artemia bioassay. In order to study the effects of toxic C. polylepis on protozooplankton grazers, grazing experiments were performed with the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina Dujardin as grazer. A first experiment was carried out in order to follow batch culture growth and initial grazing of O. marina when fed toxic or non-toxic clones of C. polylepis. Ingestion of the toxic clone was 27% of ingestion when fed with the non-toxic clone. When O. marina was fed with the toxic clone, vacuoles within O. marina contained fewer food particles per cell and the cells attained slower division rate (58% of the division rate estimated for the non-toxic clone). A second experiment was conducted to determine the grazing and growth response of O. marina as a function of algal food concentration. Profound differences in ingestion, clearance, division and gross growth efficiency of O. marina when fed the two clones of C. polylepis again were apparent. However, even at algal concentrations of 400×103 ml−1, O. marina is not killed by the presence or by the ingestion of toxic C. polylepis, indicating that the toxin deters grazers. In addition to grazing experiments, lipid classes and fatty acids of both algal clones were analysed and compared in order to follow the hypothesis that toxicity of C. polylepis is caused by liposaccharides, lipids, or fatty acids. However, the chemical composition with respect to lipid classes and fatty acids of both clones were quite similar, making an involvement of these substances in the toxicity towards Artemia and O. marina unlikely.  相似文献

The germination of dinoflagellate cysts isolated from the surface sediment from Peter the Great Bay (Sea of Japan) provided motile cells of Gyrodinium instriatum. This is the first report on this species for the seas of Russia. The morphology of both collected and germinated cysts and motile cells is described, and data on the ecology and distribution of the species are provided.  相似文献

The guava weevil, Conotrachelus psidii, is a major pest of guava in Brazil and causes severe reduction in fruit quality. This weevil is difficult to control with insecticides because adults emerge over a long period, and larvae develop to the fourth-instar inside the fruit and move to the soil for pupation. We assessed the virulence of entomopathogenic nematodes to fourth-instar larvae in soil by comparing their susceptibility to nine species or strains: Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88, H. baujardi LPP7, and LPP1, H. indica Hom1, Steinernema carpocapsae All and Mexican, S. feltiae SN, S. glaseri NC, and S. riobrave 355. In petri dish assays with sterile sand at a concentration of 100 infective juveniles (IJs) of a given nematode species/strain, larval mortality ranged from 33.5 to 84.5%, with the heterorhabditids being the most virulent. In sand column assays with H. baujardi LPP7, H. indica Hom1, or S. riobrave 355 at concentrations of 100, 200, and 500 IJs, mortality was greater than the control only for H. baujardi (62.7%) and H. indica (68.3%) at the highest concentration. For H. baujardi LPP7 in a petri dish assay, the time required to kill 50 and 90% of the larvae (LT50 and LT90) for 100 IJs was 6.3 and 9.9 days, whereas the lethal concentration required to kill 50 and 90% of the larvae (LC50 and LC90) over 7 days was 52 and 122.2 IJs. In a greenhouse study with guava trees in 20-L pots, 10 weevil larvae per pot, and concentrations of 500, 1000 or 2000 IJs, H. baujardi LPP7 caused 30 and 58% mortality at the two highest concentrations. These results show that H. baujardi is virulent to fourth-instar larvae and has potential as a biological control agent in IPM programs.  相似文献
