Summary The opercular epithelium of the teleost,Fundulus heteroclitus, is unique with respect to other Cl secreting epithelia in that the rate of Cl transport is antagonistically regulated by catecholamines. Activation of the -adrenergic receptors by arterenol inhibits the transport rate, while activation of the -adrenergic receptors by isoproterenol stimulates the transport rate (Degnan and Zadunaisky, 1979). In the present study, specific adrenergic agonists and antagonists were employed to further characterize the nature of the receptors involved in these control mechanisms, 1-agonists had no effect on the transport rate, while 2-agonists produced an inhibition indistinguishable from that of arterenol. Furthermore, this inhibition was unaffected by 1-agonists and blocked by 2-agonists. None of the specific 1- or 2-agonists produced a significant stimulation of the transport rate when compared to isoproterenol. However, the stimulatory effect of isoproterenol was unaffected by 2-antagonists, and blocked by 1-antagonists. These findings demonstrate that the inhibitory effect of catecholamines on Cl transport in the opercular epithelium is mediated solely by the 2-adrenergic receptors, while the stimulatory effect is mediated solely by the 1-adrenergic receptors.  相似文献

A contextualizing image (CI) is a powerful central image of a dream which appears to contextualize (provide a picture-context for) the dreamer's emotion. For instance, dreamers who have experienced any serious traumatic event sometimes dream, I was overwhelmed by a tidal wave. This appears to picture their feeling of terror and/or vulnerability.A scoring system for CIs is examined here and is applied to dreams and daydreams supplied by 40 students. Two raters scoring dreams on a blind basis showed good inter-rater reliability. Recent dreams were shown to have more as well as more intense CIs than recent daydreams; likewise, dreams that stand out had more intense CIs than daydreams that stand out. Students with thin boundaries had more and more intense CIs than students with thick boundaries in their recent dreams and nightmare, but not so clearly in dreams and nightmares that stand out. The emotions judged as contextualized by the powerful images tended towards fear/terror and helplessness/vulnerability in dreams (especially in dreams that stand out) whereas emotions contextualized by images in daydreams showed a wide range with no clusters.  相似文献

Studies on the osmotic optima for growth of some Aspergilli isolated from Indian Usar (alkaline) soils have revealed the occurrence of four osmophilic and twenty-five other species which can be categorised as facultative tolerant on the basis of their osmotic concentration optima. In addition, the Usar soil strains possess a comparatively greater osmotic tolerance than their fertile soil counterparts which may be attributed to the relatively hypertonic conditions prevailing in Usar soils.  相似文献

Primary structure of -chain of pigeon is presented. It was determined by amino acid sequence analysis of intact -chain and its peptides obtained by the enzymatic and chemical cleavage. Comparison of amino acid sequence of the chain with other available data shows 14 Ile, 61 Lys, and 113 Ile as residues specific to pigeon. The trisaccharide Gal13Gal14GlcNAc1O-(CH2)8COOCH3 was enzymatically synthesized, within situ UDP-Gal regeneration. By combination in one pot of only four enzymes, namely, sucrose synthase, UDP-Glc 4-epimerase, UDP-Gal:GlcNAc 4-galactosyltransferase and UDP-Gal:Gal14GlcNAc 3-galactosyltransferase, Gal13Gal14GlcNAc1O-(CH2)8COOCH3 was formed in a 2.2 µmol ml–1 yield starting from the acceptor GlcNAc1O-(CH2)8COOCH3. This is an efficient and convenient method for the synthesis of the Gal13Gal14GlcNAc epitope which plays an important role in various biological and immunological processes.  相似文献

Primary structure analysis of the four river buffalo -globin chains showed that haplotypes A and B differ from each other by a substitution at codon 64 that may encode Ala or Asn. The A haplotype encodes two -globin chains, I1 and II3, which differ at positions 129 and 131: I1 has 64 Ala, 129 Phe, 131 Asn; II3 has 64 Ala, 129 Leu, 131 Ser. The B haplotype encodes two -globin chains, I2 and II4, which differ at positions 10 and 11: I2 has 10 Ile, 11 Gln, 64 Asn; II4 has 10 Val, 11 Lys, 64 Asn. Apart from the Ala/Asn polymorphism at position 64, amino acid substitutions in allelic and nonallelic -globin chains seem to have arisen by single point mutations. Detection of electrophoretically silent mutations due to neutral amino acid substitutions and their influence on the isoelectric point are discussed. Furthermore, primary structures of river buffalo -globin chains are compared to other species of the Bovidae family to suggest evolutionary events that have characterized the amino acid substitutions of river buffalo hemoglobin.  相似文献

Biofilms were allowed to develop on wooden slides of the River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh., Myrtaceae) submerged in two billabongs of south-eastern Australia. The slides were placed in the photic zone and the aphotic zone, and the biofilms sampled after eight week's growth over the summer of 1989–1990 and winter of 1990. Bacterial numbers, estimated with epifluorescence microscopy, ranged from 4–78 × 106 cells cm–2. Bacteria were more abundant in the photic zone than the aphotic zone, and more abundant in summer than winter. Fewer than 0.5% of the bacteria could be cultivated on nutrient agar plates. Concentrations of phospholipids ranged from 8–79 ng cm–2, which corresponded to bacterial abundances of 2–17 × 106 cells cm–2. Fifty five phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) were identified, of which 16:0 (13–29% of total PFLA) was the most common. Other abundant PFLA included 16:17c (6–28%), 18:26 (3–16%), 18:33 (4–12%), 18:19c (3–5%), 18:l7c (5–11%) and 18:0 (2–8%). Minor PLFA included 14:0, i and a 15:0, 15:0, 16:l5c, 16:113c, 18:36, 18:43, 20:46 and 20:53. The PLFA profiles of the biofilms were quite different from those of the sediments and plankton. There was a clear distinction between the PLFA profiles of summer and winter biofilms, but less evidence for unequivocal site or light-regime effects.  相似文献

Summary The frequency of +-thalassmia has been determined in African populations carrying s-chromosomes of different origins. All these + thalassemias result from a right-ward deletion. Restriction mapping of the -3·7/haplotype with the enzyme ApI only showed the presence of a type I crossover. RsaI polymorphism at the 5 end of Z2 is largely represented in the normal population (gene frequency 23%) but, in our series, never associated with the -3·7/haplotype.  相似文献

Summary Three different conformations of proline rings in a protein in solution, Up, Down and Twist, have been distinguished, and stereospecific assignments of the pyrrolidine -, - and -hydrogens have been made on the basis of 1H-1H vicinal coupling constant patterns and intraresidue NOEs. For all three conformations, interhydrogen distances in the pairs -3, 3-3, 2-2, 2-2, and 3-3 (2.3 Å) are shorter than those in the pairs -2, 2-3, 3-2, 2-3, and 3-2 (2.7–3.0 Å), resulting in stronger NOESY cross peaks. For the Up conformation, the 3-2 and 2-3 spin-spin coupling constants are small (<3 Hz), and weak cross peaks are obtained in a short-mixing-time (10 ms) TOCSY spectrum; all other vicinal coupling constants are in the range 5–12 Hz, and result in medium to strong TOCSY cross peaks. For the Down form, the -2, 2-3, and 3-2 vicinal coupling constants are small, leading to weak TOCSY cross peaks; all other couplings again are in the range 5–12 Hz, and result in medium to strong TOCSY cross peaks. In the case of a Twist conformation, dynamically averaged coupling constants are anticipated. The procedure has been applied to bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor and Cucurbita maxima trypsin inhibitor-V, and ring conformations of all prolines in the two proteins have been determined.  相似文献
