The main objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the influence of water currents on the suspension feeding rate of cockles (Cerastoderma edule); 2) to quantify the interaction between cockle feeding and flow on algal cell depletion in the overlying water column, and 3) to measure the effect of flow on resuspension of their pseudofaeces and faeces. Flume experiments demonstrated that suspension feeding rate (i.e. clearance rate) of C. edule was not significantly affected by increasing current speed, at least between 5 and 35 cm s− 1. Measurement of vertical profiles in algal cell concentrations within the water column showed a marked depletion above the bed, and the size of this was inversely related to currents' speeds below 5 cm s− 1. At 2 cm s− 1 the algal cell depletion was maximum immediately above the bed. However, below currents of 1 cm s− 1 the maximum depletion was at 10 cm above the bed. This was a result of the exhalent jet of the cockle pumping filtered water (i.e. algal free) vertically into the water column and above the intake level of the inhalant siphon. Such stratification of the water column would appear to be beneficial to the cockle because it reduces the degree of re-filtration of algal cell depleted water at times of low flow, when there is poor mixing and thus poor replenishment of phytoplankton to the boundary layer. Critical erosion thresholds for cockle biodeposits, produced from a diet of silt and unicellular algae, were recorded at current velocities of 15 and 25 cm s− 1, or shear velocities of 0.6 and 1.0 cm s− 1, for pseudofaeces and faeces respectively.  相似文献

Population dynamics of marine invertebrates is controlled by a variety of abiotic and biotic factors. Among these, some have received lesser attention from marine ecologists because of their ‘discrete’ nature. This is the case of parasitism and bacterial load. In the present study, we focused on the role that both digenean trematodes and heterotrophic aerobic bacteria might play in the mortality and burying behaviour of cockles, Cerastoderma edule. The bivalves were sampled monthly during 1 year from two sites in Arcachon Bay (French Atlantic coast). Mortality rates were assessed after transferring in the laboratory normally buried and unburied (i.e. found lying at the sediment surface at low tide) cockles. Their digenean and bacterial loads were determined for both positions (normally buried and unburied). Mortality rate was significantly higher for cockles found out of the sediment at low tide, suggesting that this abnormal position was a prelude to cockles' death. Comparison of digenean load of cockles showed no significant difference between buried and unburied bivalves. In contrast, bacterial load was significantly higher in unburied cockles than in normally buried animals. The effect of high concentration of a marine bacterial strain (Pseudomonas fluorescens) on cockles' burying behaviour and mortality was tested in the laboratory. Results showed that these bacteria could trigger the emergence of animals from the sediment but did not cause cockles' death. These field observations and laboratory experiments suggest that bacteria, rather than digenean trematodes, could play a role in the emergence of cockles and, hence, affect their survival in the wild.  相似文献

Dynamic energy budget models for growth of individual cockles (Cerastoderma edule) and mussels (Mytilus edulis) are adjusted and calibrated to the Oosterschelde by formulating and parametrizing their functional responses using an extensive set of field observations. The resulting model predictions fit the observations satisfactorily. Results indicate that food quality and the importance of detritus as a food source are site-specific as well as species-specific. Despite these differences in their calibrated parameter values, both species show a very similar functional response. Compared with other systems, however, the functional responses of mussels in the present study are clearly higher than those of mussels in other systems. This may be explained by the absence of intra-specific competition in the measurement set-up that was used, and therefore supports the idea that the generally small functional response of M. edulis is caused by intra-specific competition.  相似文献

Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) are the main bivalves cultured in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Thermaikos gulf North of Greece. Global warming might affect these cultures since increases in the sea temperatures especially during summertime and may cause mass mortalities. Thus projections of the effects of global warming and the knowledge of the mechanisms of thermal limitation and adaptation are considered important in this context. In the present work we studied the seasonal expression of Hsp70 and Hsp90 of aquacultured mussels in nature in an effort to examine whether mussels are seasonally thermally stressed. Moreover we determined the activity of the key glycolytic enzyme PK in order to examine seasonal changes in the metabolic profile. The present data showed a biphasic seasonal pattern in the expression of Hsps in the mantle and PAM of M. galloprovincialis. The expression of inducible Hsp72 and Hsp90 increased between February and mid April, and remained constant or decreased slightly by the end of May. Hsps expression started again in early June leading to a gradual increase by mid July and remained by the end of August. The pattern of the HSR indicates increased protein turnover or protein damage in the tissues of aquacultured M. galloprovincialis between winter and summer seasons. The induction temperature is probably limited, and beyond some upper limits there is no further change in the HSR induction temperatures and the HSR sets in. PK activity in the mantle was significantly higher in winter than in spring. Early May saw a reactivation of PK to higher than spring values. Similar to mantle PK, PK activity in PAM was significantly higher in winter than in spring. A slight reactivation was observed by the end of August.  相似文献

Disseminated neoplasia (DN) was one of the most important pathological conditions found in cultured flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) from different geographical origins grow in Galicia (NW Spain), during a two years selective breeding programme to produce oysters less susceptible to bonamiosis. Histological characteristics observed in oysters affected by DN included intense infiltration of connective tissue of various organs (gills, stomach, digestive gland and gonad) by large undifferentiated cells, with a large nucleus and a high nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio. The main ultrastructural features were predominance of euchromatin over heterochromatin that was arrayed in small clumps in the nucleus, prominent granular nucleolus, swollen mitochondria with few cristae and high number of free ribosomes in the cytoplasm. A seasonal pattern of DN prevalence was detected, with higher values in spring-summer, but there were no significant differences between geographic origins or families within these origins. However, the intensity of the disease was significantly different between origins; oysters originating outside of Galicia (particularly those originating from Ireland) were more susceptible to develop advanced DN. DN (8%) and bonamiosis (4.9%) were found concurrently in oysters. The nature and significance of this association warrants more investigation to determine its importance, if any.  相似文献

Seasonal variation in thermal preference of Arctic charr from a North Norwegian population (70°N) was studied in an electronic shuttlebox, which allowed the fish to control the water temperature by moving between two chambers. The fish were acclimated to 12 °C and a natural photoperiod before measurements. Fish were tested in autumn (September–October), winter (January–February), spring (April–May) and summer (June–August).  相似文献

The resting metabolic rate (RMR) of seasonally-acclimated Mabuya brevicollis of various body masses was determined at 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 °C, using open-flow respirometry. RMR (ml g−1 h−1) decreased with increasing mass at each temperature. RMRs increaProd. Type: FTPsed as temperature increased. The highest and lowest Q10 values were obtained for the temperature ranges 20–25 °C and 30–35 °C for the summer-acclimated lizards. The exponent of mass “b” in the metabolism-body mass relation ranged from 0.41 to 0.61. b values were lower in the autumn and winter-acclimated lizards than in spring and summer-acclimated lizards. Seasonal acclimation effects were evident at all temperatures (20–40 °C) for M. brevicollis. Winter-acclimated skinks had the lowest metabolic rates at different temperatures. The pattern of acclimation exhibited by M. brevicollis may represent a useful adaptation for lizards inhabiting subtropical deserts to promote activity during their active seasons.  相似文献

Endopolyploidy is frequently observed during development in plant species. Patterns of endopolyploidy are diverse in the various organs of different plant species. However, little is known about the role of endopolyploidization and its significance in orchids. This study was undertaken to determine the extent of endopolyploidy in different tissues of the diploid and tetraploid genotypes of Phalaenopsis aphrodite subsp. formosana and to examine the factors that contribute to increased ploidy levels. Endopolyploidy occurs in various tissues of diploid and tetraploid orchids, at different developmental stages and under different culture conditions, as determined by flow cytometry. In this study, different patterns of endopolyploidy were observed in parts of the protocorms, leaves, roots and flowers. Endopolyploidy was found in all tissues studied except the pollinia and the tetraploid ovaries. A higher degree of endopolyploidy was observed in mature tissues compared to young tissues, greenhouse-grown plants compared to in vitro plants and diploid plants compared to tetraploid plants. We discuss the relationships between endopolyploidization and several factors related to plant growth, as well as some practical considerations of these findings.  相似文献

Previous studies have demonstrated that macroalgae from Brittany (France) contain products with antifouling activity against marine bacteria, fungi, diatoms, seaweeds and mussels. Little is known regarding the ecological function of these compounds and insufficient attention has been paid to evaluating the possible temporal variation in antifouling activity. Studies of chemical defenses in both terrestrial and marine organisms suggest that organisms vary widely in the production of chemical defenses associated with physical (temperature, light) and biological (e.g. grazing pressure) factors, season and geographical location. The present study aimed to investigate the antifouling activity of crude extracts of monthly collections of the brown alga, Bifurcaria bifurcata, against two marine bacteria, Cobetia marina and Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis, and cypris larvae of the barnacle, Balanus amphitrite. The toxicity of the extracts was determined with a B. amphitrite nauplius assay. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was found to be subject to seasonal variation, with the highest level of activity recorded from samples collected between April and September. Results of the anti-settlement experiments showed that the extracts of B. bifurcata (when tested from 0 to 100 μg/ml) can be divided into three groups on the basis of their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs): (1) extracts from plants collected from September to March reduced settlement at nontoxic concentrations (50-100 μg/ml); (2) extracts from plants collected from April to July (which were the most active extracts) reduced settlement significantly when tested at >5 μg/ml, but were toxic at 100 μg/ml; (3) the extract prepared from plants harvested in August was inhibitory at >25 μg/ml, but was toxic at 100 μg/ml. Toxicity tests on nauplii showed that LC50 values of samples from the September to March collections were >100 μg/ml, demonstrating that they were nontoxic to nauplii. In contrast, samples obtained from the April to August collections were toxic to nauplii; the most toxic ones being from algae collected in May (LC50=55.6 μg/ml) and in June (LC50=38.3 μg/ml).The antifouling activity of extracts thus reached a peak in summer corresponding to maximal values for water temperature, light intensity and fouling pressure. It remains to be investigated whether this activity has an ecological role in the alga.  相似文献

Microscopic observations of R. bicolor ovules showed that tetrasporic embryo sacs of Fritillaria type are formed. In the mature female gametophytes modifications in antipodal cell formation and egg apparatus organization were observed, e.g. morphological resemblance was evident of antipode or synergid to the egg cell. In the central cell cytoplasm of the mature gametophytes the presence of small bodies was a characteristic feature. Development of both embryo and endosperm was observed in ∼73% of ovules at the embryo stage, while retarded or arrested development of the endosperm was found in ∼26% of them. Occasionally, two embryos occurred in the embryo sac. This is the first record of polyembryony in this species. Although hemigamy has been previously described in Rudbeckia bicolor Nutt., in the present investigations mosaic structure of embryos was not detected. Measurements of the C-DNA amount (flow cytometry) revealed embryo nuclei with 2C DNA content only, and endosperm nuclei with 5C DNA content in the mature seeds. No peak corresponding to 1C nuclei was detected in the histograms obtained from the nuclear preparation of seeds or seedling parts. These results suggest that hemigamy is not an obligatory phenomenon in R. bicolor. The mean 2C DNA value was determined as 14.51 pg (the first estimation for this species).  相似文献

Isoenzyme electrophoresis was employed to examine the relationships of 21 individuals representing four populations of Astragalus gossypinus complex as well as 20 individuals representing five populations of Astragalus persicus complex. A total of 27 bands from three enzyme systems (superoxide dismutase, esterase, and peroxidase) were obtained. UPGMA clustering method resulted in two distinct clusters for different populations corresponding to the two species complexes analysed. In both species, populations distributed on Alborz mountain range in northern Iran form separated clusters from those distributed on Zagros mountain range in the West. The results also show that both species complexes exhibit a high diversity based on Shannon–Weaver diversity index (H′) compared with other species of Astragalus reported previously. The mean number of bands per each presumed isoenzyme ranges from 2.14 to 3.57. The value of Euclidean distance ranges from 1.251 to 3.152. Our data suggest that both species should be circumscribed wider than that treated by most taxonomists, and several taxonomic names should be reduced under synonymy of the corresponding species.  相似文献

The genetic variability of four pre-determined morphotypes of Salicornia (S. patula, S. emerici, S. veneta and the “saline type”) from 10 locations on the Gulf of Trieste coast were studied by means of ploidy level estimation using flow cytometry and by molecular DNA analysis of ITS regions of nrDNA and cpDNA. Two groups, the diploids and tetraploids, with matching nrDNA sequences, were recognized. Two types of cpDNA emerged among the diploids; one the same as in tetraploids. This incongruence between nrDNA and cpDNA sequences indicates a hybridization with tetraploid maternal progenitors and demonstrates the evidence for reticulate evolution. The morphometry, based on generative morphological traits, did not clearly separate the four morphotypes. However, the most important characters—length of the middle fertile segment, length of the lateral flower, width of the scarious margin of the fertile segment in the floral region, conform to two genetically recognized types: diploid S. patula and the widely distributed tetraploid S. emerici, also comprising the “saline type” and morphotype, known as a charismatic endemic S. veneta, a flagship species for nature conservation. Other discriminative traits for diploid and tetraploid morphotypes are parameters of the flowers (comparison of length of the central vs. lateral flower) and stomatal index. The determination key is also given. The tetraploid S. emerici is by far the most common species of annual glassworts in the area, occupying more extreme habitats than a diploid S. patula, which mostly forms monodominate stands.  相似文献

The seasonal and tidal variability of inorganic C acquisition mechanisms, photosynthesis, internal composition and growth were studied in two co-occurring macroalgae in Los Toruños salt marsh (Cádiz Bay), Gracilariopsis longissima and Enteromorpha intestinalis. This variability was monitored together with physico-chemical variables affecting carbon availability, photosynthesis, and growth. The environmental variables, such as light, temperature, pH, salinity, oxygen, alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and CO2, displayed not only an expected seasonal cycle but also a daily (tidal) variability, with abrupt and rapid changes influenced by biological activities, physical variables, tidal state and tidal timing. In contrast to environmental variables, photosynthesis, pigments and C:N composition were affected by seasonal changes but not by tidal regimes, as organisms integrated these short-term fluctuations in physico-chemical variables. Photosynthesis, pigments and internal N composition were maximal in autumn and minimal in summer for both species. Growth showed a seasonal trend, displaying a summer drop with negative values. This response can be the result of extreme values of environmental variables (temperature, light, pH, nutrients, and the shortage of DIC) in summer, in comparison with higher growth rates in September onwards. The use of inhibitors of carbon acquisition in situ at normal DIC concentrations (2.2. mM) revealed species-dependent differences. While the external carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity showed a constitutive character in G. longissima, it showed little effect in E. intestinalis, which relies on internal CA activity. The 4, 4′-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2′-disulfonate (DIDS)-sensitive bicarbonate transport in G. longissima was effective in winter. In contrast, DIDS stimulated photosynthesis in summer, and relieved AZ inhibition. This response could suggest a stimulation of a H+ extrusion mediated-CO2 transport in periods of low CO2 availability.  相似文献

To establish if nutrients limit the growth of bivalves requires information not only on the quality of food available, but also the animals' feeding behaviour and endogenous metabolic demands. We hypothesized that growth of the Sydney rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) would vary in response to seasonal changes in food quality rather than quantity. We also predicted that the oysters would show feeding preferences for nitrogen over carbon, and this behaviour would result in carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios for ingested and absorbed matter that would be lower than the C/N of both the seston and the oysters' estimated metabolic maintenance requirements. The experiments were done in two phases under natural conditions. In phase 1, feeding behaviour was assessed on a single occasion and the results used to pose hypotheses for testing in phase 2, which included measurements made on three occasions encompassing autumn, winter and spring conditions. Growth rates varied with changes in ambient food quality and not with the concentration of total suspended matter. Feeding behaviour responded to food quality and, in most cases, resulted in nitrogen enrichment. For example, when nitrogen was potentially limiting to growth and/or maintenance, due to high food C/N (July) or high nitrogen demand (March), pre-ingestive selection ensured nitrogen enrichment of ingested matter and C/N ratios of ingested matter which were below the maintenance requirement. However, in November, when endogenous demands indicated an increased requirement for carbon, feeding behaviour resulted in carbon enrichment, an increase in carbon conversion efficiency, and ingested C/N ratios greater than the maintenance requirement. The results support the assertion of variable feeding physiology in oysters, responsive to both exogenous (seasonal differences in carbon and nitrogen availability) and endogenous (cycles of reproduction and growth) factors.  相似文献

Eutrophication in the northern Baltic Sea promotes growth of annual filamentous algae. The algae detach, gather at the bottom and give rise to algal mats of varying size, density, composition and condition. Dense mats of filamentous algae induce anoxia, which in turn leads to faunal mortality. By a set of field experiments, we have studied the fate of the abundant Cladophora glomerata after detaching from the rocky substrate, and the effect of water depth and sediment on its decay. Further, we have studied the importance of common mesograzers (Gammarus and Idotea) on the rate of degradation of C. glomerata and Pilayella littoralis. Our results show that loose algae at shallow sites (8 m) decompose faster than algae in deeper (18 m) areas. Drifting C. glomerata on the sediment is more rapidly broken down and dissolved than algae floating in the water column, which depends on higher microbiological activity. Dominant amphipods (Gammarus spp) colonise near-shore drift algae quickly, and juvenile bivalves (Cerastoderma glaucum) utilise algae in the water column for settling. Moderate natural densities of grazers (Gammarus spp and Idotea baltica) in the drifting algae did not increase the degradation rates of C. glomerata and P. littoralis. C. glomerata was completely decomposed in 4 months. Our experiments demonstrate the effects of position (depth, water/sediment) and grazing on the degradation of drifting filamentous algae. Mass developments of opportunistic algae occur annually in the study area, and information on the destiny of detached drift algae may help us to predict their longevity and the damage they cause, and hence, to decide on long-term measures needed to improve environmental conditions.  相似文献

A seasonal morphological variability is observed in Emiliania huxleyi var. huxleyi specimens, collected from discrete water samples in the Aegean Sea. Biometric analyses reveal a consistent pattern of increase in the size of coccoliths and coccospheres, including the thickness of the inner tube elements (INT), in winter/spring time low sea surface temperature and moderate productivity samples when compared with summer time high temperature-low productivity samples. The small range of salinity change in the Aegean Sea and the absence of seasonal pattern in nutrient content do not support any association with the observed increase in E. huxleyi coccolith size. A relatively increased [HCO3-] content is observed during spring-time interval related with the increase in the coccolith size, however it remains unclear which parameter of the carbonate system causes the observed effects.  相似文献

Torrubiella is a genus of arthropod-pathogenic fungi that primarily attacks spiders and scale insects. Based on the morphology of the perithecia, asci, and ascospores, it is classified in Clavicipitaceae s. lat. (Hypocreales), and is considered a close relative of Cordyceps s. 1., which was recently reclassified into three families (Clavicipitaceae s. str., Cordycipitaceae, Ophiocordycipitaceae) and four genera (Cordyceps s. str, Elaphocordyceps, Metacordyceps, and Ophiocordyceps). Torrubiella is distinguished morphologically from Cordyceps s. lat. mainly by the production of superficial perithecia and the absence of a well-developed stipitate stroma. To test and refine evolutionary hypotheses regarding the placement of Torrubiella and its relationship to Cordyceps s. lat., a multi-gene phylogeny was constructed by conducting ML and Bayesian analyses. The monophyly of Torrubiella was rejected by these analyses with species of the genus present in Clavicipitaceae, Cordycipitaceae, and Ophiocordycipitaceae, and often intermixed among species of Cordyceps s. lat. The morphological characters traditionally used to define the genus are, therefore, not phylogenetically informative, with the stipitate stromata being gained and/or lost several times among clavicipitaceous fungi. Two new genera (Conoideocrella, Orbiocrella) are proposed to accommodate two separate lineages of torrubielloid fungi in the Clavicipitaceae s. str. In addition, one species is reclassified in Cordyceps s. str. and three are reclassified in Ophiocordyceps. The phylogenetic importance of anamorphic genera, host affiliation, and stipitate stromata is discussed.  相似文献
