Juvenile or adult Artemia sp. are often used as live prey for the rearing of early life stages of some crustacean, fish and cephalopod species. The improvements of both Artemia growth and its biochemical composition are key issues for the suitable use of Artemia biomass in these rearing processes. In this study we evaluated the growth and survival rates of Artemia fed with the cryptophyte Rhodomonas lens in comparison with different microalgal species commonly used in aquaculture: the prasinophyte Tetraselmis suecica, the prymnesiophyte Isochrysis galbana Parke, and the eustigmatophyte Nannochloropsis gaditana. Microalgae were cultured semi-continuously in nutrient saturated conditions and with a daily renewal rate of 30% of the volume of cultures, to obtain biomass of controlled and optimized composition. Considerable differences in Artemia growth were observed, as well as in the survival rate. At day 8 of rearing, Artemia fed R. lens had the highest length (4.9 ±0.6 mm, P < 0.001), followed by individuals fed T. suecica (4.2 ± 0.7 mm), I. galbana (3.6 ± 0.7 mm) and finally those fed N. gaditana (1.5 ± 0.2 mm). The survival rate of Artemia fed N. gaditana (18 ± 3%) was much lower (P < 0.001) than values found for the remaining groups (69 to 88%). The growth rate of Artemia obtained with R. lens was in general much higher than with other microalgal diets previously reported in the literature. The higher protein content of R. lens could explain the higher growth obtained with this species, but differences of Artemia growth with the different diets could not be explained solely on the basis of the gross composition of microalgae. Factors such as cell size and digestibility all seem to contribute to the results observed. Another trial was carried out to investigate differences in Artemia growth and on its biochemical composition when fed the best two diets: R. lens or T. suecica. The fatty acid (FA) and total amino acid (AA) composition of both microalgal species and the composition of Artemia were assessed as well. As found in the first experiment individuals fed R. lens (group ARHO) grew faster than those fed T. suecica (group ATET), attaining 3.6 ± 0.3 mm and 3.2 ± 0.4 mm (P < 0.001), respectively, after 5 days of rearing. The much higher AA content obtained in R. lens may be on the basis of the higher growth obtained with this species. Protein and carbohydrate levels in Artemia juveniles were very similar in both groups (64-68% of dry weight, and 8-10%, respectively). Lipid was slightly lower in ARHO (12%) than in ATET (15%, P < 0.01). Regarding the FA composition, juveniles from group ARHO contained higher levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 6.2%) than juveniles from ATET (4.1%, P < 0.01), whereas docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was only found in juveniles from ARHO (1.1%). Taking into account that the daily productivity of R. lens culture was higher than, or at least equal, the remaining microalgal species this cryptophyte is confirmed as an excellent diet to optimize the growth of Artemia, as well as to improve its biochemical composition.  相似文献

Although otolith Strontium (Sr)/calcium (Ca) ratios have been widely used to reconstruct the past salinity environmental history of anguillid eels, factors affecting the Sr/Ca ratios in otoliths are incompletely understood. Japanese Eel (Anguilla japonica) elvers (mean length 54.7 ± 2.1 mm) were collected in the estuary during their upstream migration and reared at 5 different salinities (0, 5, 15, 25, and 35 psu) and 3 types of feeding conditions (formulated feed, tubifex, and starvation) for 30 days to evaluate the effects of salinity and diets on otolith Sr/Ca ratios. Ca and Sr concentrations in the ambient water significantly increased with salinity (SAL) as [Ca] water = 15.50SAL − 5.56, and [Sr] water = 0.21SAL + 0.03, respectively. Sr/Ca ratios in otoliths increased with salinity (SAL) of the rearing water as [(Sr/Ca) × 1000] otolith = 0.091SAL + 3.790. In diets, Sr/Ca ratios were 4 times higher in tubifex than in formulated feed. However, in otoliths, ANOVA indicated that Sr/Ca ratios did not differ significantly between groups fed on tubifex or formulated feed (p = 0.118). Otolith Sr/Ca ratios were negatively correlated with fish growth rates while the growth rates differed significantly among rearing conditions with different salinities and diets. Partition coefficients of the Sr/Ca ratios from ambient water to fish tissues and otoliths significantly increased with salinity. The Sr/Ca ratios of Japanese Eel otoliths thus were positively correlated with the ambient salinity and decreased with increasing fish growth rate, but was not affected by fish diet.  相似文献

Trypanosoma cruzi is the ethiological agent for Chagas disease in Latin America. This study aimed to test the trypanocidal effect of licarin A and burchellin isolated from plants in northeastern Brazil. These neolignans were tested on T. cruzi and on peritoneal macrophages, to evaluate drug toxicity. Epimastigote growth was inhibited in 45% with licarin A and 20% with burchellin with an IC50/96 h of 462.7 μM and 756 μM, respectively. Epimastigotes treated with licarin A presented swollen mitochondria and disorganized mitochondrial cristae, kDNA and Golgi complex. When treated with burchellin, they presented enormous autophagosomes and chromatin disorganization. Licarin A and burchellin were able to induce trypomastigote death with IC50/24 h of 960 μM and 520 μM, respectively. Although licarin A presented an IC50 for trypomastigotes higher than for epimastigotes, both substances acted as therapeutic trypanocidal agents, because they were able to kill parasites without affecting macrophages. Due to our results, burchellin and licarin A need to be further analysed to observe if they may be used as alternative blood additive prophylaxis against Chagas disease, since it has been established that blood transfusion is an important mechanism in the transmission process.  相似文献

This paper reports the parasites found in three commercially exploited bivalve molluscs (Mytella guyanensis, Anomalocardia brasiliana and Iphigenia brasiliana) of an estuarine region of Ilhéus, south of Bahia, Brazil (14°48′23′′S; 39°02′47′′W). Samples of 20 individuals of each species were collected fortnightly from August 2005 to August 2006. A total of 1480 individuals was collected and processed by standard histologic techniques; the histologic sections were stained with Harris haematoxylin and eosin and examined with light microscope. The water temperature in the study area varied from 24 to 30.5 °C and the salinity from 0 to 23 ppt. Remarkable differences were found in the parasitic community between the three mollusc species involved in the study, which occupied different habitats in the estuarine region of the Cachoeira river. The following parasites were found: intracellular rickettsia-like colonies in digestive epithelia; intracellular gregarine Nematopsis sp. in gills, mantle, gonad, digestive gland and foot muscle; sporocysts of a Bucephalidae trematode in gonads, mantle, gills, digestive gland and foot; unidentified digenetic metacercariae in digestive gland and gonad; metacestodes of Tylocephalum sp. in connective tissue in the digestive gland and in gonad; and an unidentified metazoan in mantle and intestinal lumen. No significant temporal variation in the prevalence of any parasite was detected, which could be due to the narrow temperature range of the region and the absence of patterns of salinity and rainfall variation through the year. The infestation by sporocyst was the only pathological threat detected for the studied populations because of its potential for host castration. The low infection intensity and/or prevalence of the other parasites and the lack of obvious lesions suggest that there is no other serious pathological risk for the studied mollusc populations.  相似文献

Octopus vulgaris is a cephalopod species in several oceans and commonly caught by artisanal and industrial fisheries. In Brazil, O. vulgaris populations are mainly distributed along the southern coast and have been subjected to intensive fishing during recent years. Despite the importance of this marine resource, no genetic study has been carried out to examine genetic differences among populations along the coast of Brazil. In this study, 343 individuals collected by commercial vessels were genotyped at six microsatellite loci to investigate the genetic differences in O. vulgaris populations along the southern coast of Brazil. Genetic structure and levels of differentiation among sampling sites were estimated via a genotype assignment test and F-statistics. Our results indicate that the O. vulgaris stock consists of four genetic populations with an overall significant analogous FSTCT = 0.10710, P < 0.05) value. The genetic diversity was high with an observed heterozygosity of Ho = 0.987. The negative values of FIS found for most of the loci examined suggested a possible bottleneck process. These findings are important for further steps toward more sustainable octopus fisheries, so that this marine resource can be preserved for long-term utilization.  相似文献

The survival of aphids exposed to low temperatures is strongly influenced by their ability to move within and between plants and to survive exposure to potentially lethal low temperatures. Little is known about the physiological and behavioural limitations on aphid movement at low temperatures or how they may relate to lethal temperature thresholds. These questions are addressed here through an analysis of the thermal ecology of three closely related aphid species: Myzus persicae, a ubiquitous temperate zone pest, Myzus polaris, an arctic species, and Myzus ornatus, a sub-tropical species. Lower lethal temperatures (LLT50) of aphids reared at 15 °C were similar for M. persicae and M. polaris (range: −12.7 to −13.9 °C), but significantly higher for M. ornatus (−6.6 °C). The temperature thresholds for activity and chill coma increased with rearing temperature (10, 15, 20, and 25 °C) for all clones. For M. polaris and M. ornatus the slopes of these relationships were approximately parallel; by contrast, for M. persicae the difference in slopes meant that the difference between the temperatures at which aphids cease walking and enter coma increased by approximately 0.5 °C per 1 °C increase in rearing temperature. The data suggest that all three species have the potential to increase population sizes and expand their ranges if low temperature limitation is relaxed.  相似文献

Aspisoma lineatum (Gyllenhal) is a common firefly in the Southeastern region of Brazil. Adults and larvae were collected in the municipality of Campinas, state of S?o Paulo, Brazil, and the immature stages were described and reared in the laboratory. Four generations were reproduced in the laboratory, and a method for its rearing was established. The life cycle usually lasts 6?months, but under optimal laboratory conditions, it lasted from 2 to 4?months. Larvae were fed with Bradybaena similaris and Bulimulus tenuissimus snails since the beginning of the larval stage. This species was found to be easily adapted to environments under anthropic influence, such as urban areas and farms.  相似文献

Non-adapted plants growing in high altitude such as bracken fern Pteridium arachnoideum are exposed to environmental extremes that may induce a chemical adaptive response. Here we show that there is a non-uniform distribution of low (LMP) and high molecular weight (HMP) phenolics in the frond parts of P. arachnoideum growing at high elevation. LMP–HMP levels were measured in sun-exposed (E) and self shaded (SS) pinnae between 2100 and 3190 m in the tropical Andes, during dry and rainy seasons. While there was no difference in E vs. SS contents of LMP at 2100 m, E accumulated greater LMP–HMP concentrations relative to SS as altitude increased. This difference was increased during the dry season. Linear correlations between the position of each pinnae relative to the ground level and LMP–HMP occurred along a 2570–3190 m transect. Water restriction in the dry season also caused increase of LMP and HMP. We conclude that excess UV-B radiation and water availability are important modelers of the non-adapted plant acclimation response to stress in tropical high mountain habitats.  相似文献

Knowledge of the social structure of a population is important for a range of fundamental and applied purposes. Group characteristics and population structure of chital (Axis axis) and sambar (Rusa unicolor) were studied in a deciduous habitat of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Western Ghats, India, during 2008-2009. Vehicle transects were monitored monthly to gather information on group-size and age-sex composition of chital and sambar. The average mean group size and crowding for chital and sambar was 13.1 ± 0.5 (n = 1020), 3.6 ± 0.2 (n = 377) and 33.3, 11.0 respectively. The average adult male:adult female:fawn ratio was 63.4:100:22.3 (n = 9391) and 43.9:100:23.7 (n = 1023) in chital and sambar respectively. The mean group size of chital and sambar varied significantly between seasons (Kruskal-Wallis test, p = <0.001). Peak fawning season was observed from February to May for chital and May to August for sambar. Group's sex-age composition influenced group formation in both species between seasons at different level. Adult male and fawn were the important predicting variables of change in group size. Skewed female sex ratio was probably due to selective male predation by large predators. Although fawning occurred throughout the year, both species showed seasonality in fawning. The above mentioned patterns differed between species depending upon their ecological adaptation in foraging strategies and habitat preference.  相似文献

To investigate why the preferred means to produce bovine embryos in Brazil has changed from in vivo to in vitro, we compared these two approaches in the same Nelore cows (n = 30) and assessed total embryo production and pregnancy rates. Without a specific schedule, all cows were subjected to ultrasound-guided ovum pick up (OPU)/in vitro production (IVP) and MOET, with intervals ranging from 15 to 45 d between procedures, respectively. To produce in vivo embryos, cows were superovulated and embryos were recovered nonsurgically from 1 to 3 times (1.4 ± 0.6), whereas OPU/IVP was repeated from 1 to 5 times (3.2 ± 1.2) in each donor cow during a 12-mo interval. Embryos obtained from both methods were transferred to crossbred heifers. On average, 25.6 ± 15.3 immature oocytes were collected per OPU attempt. The average number of embryos produced by OPU/IVP (9.4 ± 5.3) was higher (P < 0.05) than the MOET method (6.7 ± 3.7). However, pregnancy rates were lower (P < 0.05) following transfer of IVP (33.5%) versus in vivo-derived embryos (41.5%) embryos. Embryonic losses between Days 30 and 60 and fetal sex ratio were similar (P > 0.05) between in vivo and in vitro-derived embryos. We concluded that in Nelore cows, with an interval of 15 d between OPU procedures, it was possible to produce more embryos and pregnancies compared to conventional MOET.  相似文献

The present study was conduced at two sites (Tembien and Wukro) in the semi-arid region of Tigray in northern Ethiopia to investigate the seasonal dynamics in the chemical composition and dry matter digestibility of grass and browse species of exclosures. The browse species studied in Tembien and Wukro had a mean crude protein (CP) value of 166 and 117 g/kg dry matter (DM), respectively. The mean in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) coefficient and predicted metabolizable energy (ME) density of the browse species were 0.72 and 9.83 MJ/kg DM, respectively at Tembien, 0.62 and 8.38 MJ/kg DM, respectively, at Wukro. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) values of the browse species varied from 192 to 437 and 127 to 391 g/kg DM, respectively. Acid detergent lignin (ADL) values ranged from 36 to 190 g/kg DM. The mean CP of the grass species in Tembien and Wukro during the long rainy season was 76 and 73 g/kg DM, respectively and values declined below a critical maintenance level during the dry and short rain seasons. Mean IVDMD and ME values for the two sites were 0.41 and 0.47, and 5.38 and 6.11 MJ/kg DM, respectively. The NDF, ADF, and lignin values of the grass species were generally above 700, 400, and 70 g/kg DM, respectively. The CP, IVDMD and ME values of the mixed grass samples differed (P<0.05) among harvesting months and values ranged from 20 to 103 g/kg DM, 0.47 to 0.72 MJ/kg DM, and 6.16 to 9.91 MJ/kg DM, respectively. The browse species could be used as useful dry season protein supplements to the N deficient native grass species. Especial emphasis should be given to propagate Maerua angolensis and Cadaba farinosa at community nursery sites. Harvesting in September, rather than the current extended harvest period that took place in October and November, can considerably improve the feeding value of native grass hay for smallholder ruminant production systems.  相似文献

Body temperatures of 13 Paleosuchus palpebrosus, 7 males and 6 females, were monitored by radio-telemetry during cold periods (dry season) and warm periods (wet and dry seasons) in a stream draining into the Brazilian Pantanal. The mass of the caimans varied from 2.5 to 20.0 kg, and snout–vent length from 47.5 to 95.0 cm. Mean monthly body temperature was 21.6 °C, and varied from 20.1 to 25.6 °C throughout the year. Body temperature was correlated with air and water temperature but did not differ between males and females. Unlike all other crocodilians investigated in detail to date, the caimans did not show evidence of attempts to obtain higher body temperatures when ambient temperatures were low, and had low and generally constant temperatures in relation to the surrounding air and water throughout the year. The caimans remained in burrows during cold periods in the dry season, which may explain why they did not seek higher temperatures. Tolerance of relatively low and constant body temperatures may be a key adaptation of species of Paleosuchus, allowing them to occupy environments inhospitable to other crocodilians.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of different feeding regimes from 11 weeks of age to first parturition on feed intake, leptin, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and total protein serum levels, as well as productive performance in young rabbit does. In addition, body composition was estimated by bioimpedance analysis. Thirty-six 11-week-old does were randomly distributed in three groups. The AL-C group was fed ad libitum a control diet containing 350 g neutral detergent fibre (aNDFom)/kg, 11.6 MJ digestible energy (DE)/kg and 173 g crude protein (CP)/kg, and the does were inseminated at 16 weeks of age. The R-C group was fed 150 g/d of the same diet until 16 weeks of age, one week before artificial insemination (AI) at 17 weeks of age, and then fed ad libitum. The AL-F group was fed a diet containing 475 g aNDFom/kg, 9.4 MJ DE/kg and 174 g CP/kg ad libitum, and was inseminated at 17 weeks of age. During rearing (11-16 weeks), does in the R-C group had the lowest DE (1.54 MJ/d; P<0.003) and digestible protein (DP, 17.9 g/d; P<0.001) intake, as well as the lowest protein (172 g/kg; P<0.05) and energy (5.9 MJ/kg) body contents, leptin concentration at 16 weeks of age (2.48 ng/ml; P<0.001) and fertility (P<0.02) at first AI. Daily feed intake during pregnancy and lactation, as well as prolificacy and litter weight, were similar among groups. The highest percentage of body fat was observed for all the does when were inseminated for the first time (135 g/kg; P<0.001), consistent with the highest leptin (4.48 ng/ml; P<0.001) and total protein serum levels (6.87 g/dl; P<0.001) at this time. Serum NEFA level around parturition was higher (P<0.05) in groups AL-C and R-C (1.11 and 0.85 mmol/l) than in group AL-F (0.71 mmol/l), suggesting a lower lipid mobilization that tended to improve fertility rate for AL-F does on day 11 post-parturition (P<0.09). In conclusion, feed restriction during the rearing period delays reproductive development in young rabbits. In nulliparous does, ad libitum feeding during rearing with a high-fibre diet allows a similar productive performance to that of feeding with a less fibrous diet. Nevertheless, the use of high fibre diets during rearing does not affect feed intake throughout the first pregnancy and lactation.  相似文献

Fifteen dry adult canine diets (i.e., dinners, extrudates, pellets) were collected from retailers in Wageningen, The Netherlands, and chemically and physically characterized. Quality measurements were lysine O-methylisourea (OMIU) reactivity and starch gelatinization degree (SGD). In general, extruded diets had a higher crude fat and starch content than pellets. Mean values for starch gelatinization were higher in pellets and ranged between 0.78 and 0.91. The mean reactive/total lysine ratio in extrudate samples was about 5–10% higher than in pellet samples, suggesting the presence in commercial diets of about 200 g bound lysine/kg in pellets and 120 g/kg in extrudates with bound lysine levels of canine dinners about 170 g/kg. Variation of analysed nutrients in pellets was larger than in extrudates. Inclusion of animal or vegetable ingredients, and the process variables during extrusion or pelleting, are the likely causative factors for the variation in lysine reactivity and starch gelatinization.  相似文献

The tapeworm Moniezia expansa and naturally infected sheep were investigated with respect to their cadmium accumulation. Cadmium chloride (CdCl2, 0.2 g) was added to 10 ml of distilled water and administered orally to the sheep every day for a period of 1 week. The cadmium content of M. expansa was lower than that in the liver tissues of sheep, although this difference was not significant. The highest mean cadmium concentrations were found in the liver of sheep infected with M. expansa (24.5 ± 11.5 mg kg−1 dry weight). The mean cadmium concentration measured in M. expansa was 21.5 ± 19.2 mg kg−1 dry weight, which was 31 and 1.5 times higher than levels determined in the muscle and kidney of the host, respectively, but 0.9 times lower than levels determined in the liver of host. Sheeps with M. expansa infection always had higher cadmium concentrations in the tissues (with the exception of the blood) than their uninfected conspecifics.  相似文献

Populations of a rheophilic cyprinid Barbus barbus have declined in last decades, which created a need of conservation aquaculture. Production of stocking material in controlled conditions calls for optimization of the two major factors, temperature and diet. Condition, growth and food conversion ratio in fish fed a formulated diet Aller Futura were compared with those on natural food—frozen Chironomidae larvae at 17, 21 and 25 °C. Groups of 60 early juveniles (0.6–3.7 g) were reared in each of 18 aquaria in which six experimental groups were run in triplicate. Daily food ratios were adjusted according to fish biomass, differences in hydration between the two diets and rearing temperature. No mortality occurred during the experiment. Condition coefficient K was significantly higher in fish fed Aller Futura compared to those fed Chironomidae irrespective of temperature tested; body deformities were not recorded. Relative growth rate at the same temperature was always higher in fish on the formulated diet than in those fed Chironomidae, and food conversion ratio was always suppressed, both suggesting an efficient utilization of Aller Futura for growth in B. barbus early juveniles. On both diets the coefficient K was depressed at 21 °C. Relative growth rate (RGR) was accelerated with temperature according the Krogh’s “normal curve” within the range 21–25 °C, while at lower temperatures (17–21 °C) the observed values of temperature coefficient Q10 were much higher than the theoretical Q10 values based on Krogh’s “normal curve”. Food conversion ratios (FCR) were reduced on both diets at 21 and 25 °C. Theoretical optimum temperatures for food conversion were 22.0 and 23.6 °C. Summing up, responses of three independent indices: condition, growth and food utilization locate the optimum temperature for B. barbus between 21 and 25 °C. No evidence was found that the effect of temperature on these indices was substantially modified by the diet.  相似文献

Evaporative water loss (EWL) and energy metabolism were measured at different temperatures in Eothenomys miletus and Apodemus chevrieri in dry air. The thermal neutral zone (TNZ) of E. miletus was 22.5–30 °C and that of A. chevrieri was 20–27.5 °C. Mean body temperatures of the two species were 35.75±0.5 and 36.54±0.61 °C. Basal metabolic rates (BMR) were 1.92±0.17 and 2.7±0.5 ml O2/g h, respectively. Average minimum thermal conductance (Cm) were 0.23±0.08 and 0.25±0.06 ml O2/g h °C. EWL in E. miletus and A. chevrieri increased with the increase in temperature; the maximal EWL at 35 °C was 4.78±0.6 mg H2O/g h in E. miletus, and 5.92±0.43 mg H2O/g h in A. chevrieri. Percentage of evaporative heat loss to total heat production (EHL/HP) increased with the increase in temperature; the maximal EHL/HP was 22.45% at 30 °C in E. miletus, and in A. chevrieri it was 19.96% at 27.5 °C. The results may reflect features of small rodents in the Hengduan mountains region: both E. miletus and A. chevrieri have high levels of BMR and high levels of total thermal conductance, compared with the predicted values based on their body masses, while their body temperatures are relatively low. EWL plays an important role in temperature regulation.  相似文献

Rectal temperature (Tr) was measured in captive African giant rats (Cricetomys gambianus, Waterhouse), live-trapped in the Savannah during the harmattan, hot-dry and rainy seasons with the aim of determining diurnal, seasonal and sex patterns.
(2)
Mean (±SEM) Tr in the morning (37.16±0.04 °C) was lower (P<0.001) than the afternoon (37.49±0.03 °C) and evening (37.66±0.03 °C). There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between afternoon and evening Tr during the harmattan and rainy seasons, but the difference was significant (P<0.001) during the hot-dry season. Overall Tr was higher (P<0.001) during the hot-dry (38.03±0.03 °C) than harmattan (37.17±0.03 °C) and rainy (37.21±0.03 °C) seasons. Tr of bucks was lower than that of does (P<0.0001) during the harmattan and rainy seasons, but sex difference during the hot-dry season was not significant (P>0.05).

Base-line Tr values for the African giant rats are shown for the first time. Season, time of day and sex influence fluctuations in Trs of African giant rats, and should be considered during diagnostic and clinical evaluations.

We explored the adaptive significance of developmental plasticity in the tropical butterfly Bicyclus anynana using two experiments including temperature changes during ontogeny. In contrast to previous findings on adult acclimation, we could not find any evidence in support of adaptive developmental plasticity, as survival until adulthood was not enhanced when larval rearing temperatures matched the temperatures experienced during prepupal or pupal development. Extreme temperatures substantially reduced survival, supporting the ‘optimal developmental temperature’ hypothesis. Metamorphosis was more efficient at the higher rearing temperature of 27 °C, where egg hatching success was also higher, indicating that the lower temperature of 20 °C is already slightly stressful for this tropical butterfly.  相似文献
