The phytoplankton community structure, in terms of species composition, total standing crop,and abundance of the dominant algal species, at four stations in Donghu Lake, Wuhan, China, was investigated monthly from January 1994 to December 1996. A total of 260 taxa was observed, of which Chlorophyta (106 taxa) contributed the highest portion of the total number of taxa, followed by Bacillariophyta (82 taxa) and Cyanophyta (32 taxa). The total standing crop measured by means of chlorophyll a content, cell density,and cell biovolume, as well as the abundance of the dominant species, declined in the order of Station I to Station IV. Seasonal changes of the standing crop varied greatly among the four stations. Although the cell density at the four stations showed a single peak within a year, the peak density varied from July to November, dependent on the sampling year and the station. For chlorophyll a content and cell biovolume,multiple peaks were observed at Stations I and II, but a single peak was found at Stations III and IV. The phytoplankton community structure indicated that the trophic status was the highest at Station I (most eutrophic), followed by Station II; Stations III and IV were the least trophic areas. The long-term changes in phytoplankton community structure further suggested that changes in phytoplankton community structure were correlated with water quality, and eutrophication of Donghu Lake had been aggravated since the 1950s.  相似文献

In contrast to the relatively well documented impact of particulate-feedingfish on zooplankton communities, little attention has been devotedto the impact of filter-feeding fish. Filter-feeding silverand bighead carp are the most intensively cultured fish speciesin Asia and comprise much of the production of Chinese aquaculture.However, little information is known about the impact of eitherfish on the zooplankton community. Long-term changes in theCopepoda community (1957–1996) were studied at two samplingstations of a subtropical Chinese lake (Lake Donghu) dominatedby silver and bighead carp. For both calanoids and cyclopoids,the littoral station (I) was much more resource profitable thanthe pelagic station (II). There has been a tremendous increasein the annual fish catch over the past 30 years due to the increasedstocking with fingerlings of the two carp species. There wasa notably higher fish density at Station I than at Station II.Cyclopoid abundance was notably higher at Station I than atStation II during the 1950s to the 1980s, while the reversebecame true in the 1990s. This is probably because when fishabundance increased to an extremely high level, the impact offish predation on the cyclopoids became more important thanthat of food resources at the littoral station. At both stations,cyclopoid abundance was relatively low in spite of the presenceof abundant prey. Similarly, calanoid density did not differsignificantly between the two stations in the 1950s and 1960s,but was significantly lower at Station I than at Station IIduring the 1980s and 1990s. Such changes are attributed to thegradient of fish predation between the stations and an increasingpredation pressure by the fish. The increased fish predationalso correlated with a shift in summer-dominant calanoids fromlarger species to smaller ones. In conclusion, the predaceouscyclopoids are affected by fish predation to a much lesser extentthan the herbivorous calanoids, and therefore increased predationby filter-feeding fish results in a definite increase in thecyclopoid/calanoid ratio. Predation by filter-feeding fish hasbeen a driving force in shaping the copepod community structureof Lake Donghu during the past decades.  相似文献

Around the 1930s, the zooplankton (and benthos) of the Nile delta lakes, and Lake Borullus in particular, had a mixed, eutrophic facies, with marine and mesohaline elements dominant for about eight months per year, and freshwater species taking over during the four months of the Nile flood. After the Aswan dam became operational, this regime changed: a steady supply of agricultural drainage water of Nilotic origin consistently freshened the delta. Thus, except in the immediate vicinity of their outlet to the sea, the lakes became almost fresh. Only during the rare and short‐lived (one‐three weeks) occasions when Aswan closes in winter, marine water is sucked in, and along with it, a saline fauna temporarily becomes re‐established in the east and centre of lake Borullus, and presumably of the other delta lakes as well. This marine fauna remained the same over 70+ years of observations. The freshwater component, in contrast, partly nilotic, partly mediterranean, changed deeply over time. First, the fraction of species from temporary waters disappeared, as well as (among copepods and cladocerans) all large‐bodied species. Several cladocerans and copepods with a euro‐mediterranean range appeared and diluted the pre‐existing Afrotropical fauna. The abundance of small cladocerans and, especially, rotifers increased by a factor ten or more. This latter change is believed to reflect two pressures. In a first phase, a re‐arrangement of the lake's fish fauna (a top down force) occurred. Freshwater fish replaced marine diadromic species, and their predation pressure on the zooplankton preferentially removed large‐bodied prey. In a second phase, increased agricultural drainage caused eutrophication (a bottom‐up force) and larger filtrators (cladocerans, some copepods) began to be replaced by small filtrators (rotifers). 1. Small cladocerans, copepod nauplii and rotifers often dominate the zooplankton community in tropical and subtropical lakes. This is probably because of high predation pressure by small omnivorous–planktivorous fish, but experimental evidence is scarce.
2. This study used two approaches to test the effect of the small omnivorous–planktivorous fish species Jenynsia multidentata , which is frequently abundant in (sub)tropical eutrophic lakes in South America, on the size distribution of zooplankton. In Lake Blanca (Uruguay), which lacks any piscivores, we sampled seasonally for both fish and zooplankton. We also conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment with treatments containing or lacking J. multidentata .
3. Together, the empirical and experimental data suggest that J. multidentata predation plays an important role in modulating the size structure of the zooplankton community in subtropical lakes. In the absence of J. multidentata , stocked large-sized zooplankters like Daphnia obtusa were abundant in the experiments, while small-sized zooplankton dominated in the presence of fish, as they did in the lake itself from spring to the end of the season.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Even at high population densities (300–2000 ind. 1−1), only one of five small cladoceran species (adult body length <1 mm) significantly suppressed population growth of the rotifer Keratella cochlearis through interference (encounter) competition. At 500 ind. H, adults of D. ambigua (0.96 mm body length) imposed an instantaneous per capita death rate of 0.21 day−1 on this rotifer. These short-term experiments may have underestimated cladoceran interference because newborn rotifers were rarely present.
2. Newborn rotifers (<12 h old) were much more susceptible than adult rotifers (> 24 h old) to interference from Ceriodaphnia dubia. All of the small cladoceran species tested were very much less likely than large Daphnia (body lengths >1.2 mm) to interfere with K. cochlearis , but perhaps at high population densities they could suppress population growth of susceptible rotifer species by damaging, and possibly eating, relatively small and soft-bodied newborn individuals.
3. K. cochlearis of the tecta form, without a posterior spine, produced offspring of the typica form, with a posterior spine, in the presence of C. dubia. This developmental response is stimulated by at least several, and possibly all, cladocerans and probably reduces the susceptibility of the rotifer to cladoceran interference.  相似文献

From surveys made in 1962–1963, 1973–1974, 1979–1996 at two Stations in Lake Donghu, a shallow eutrophic water body near Wuhan, P. R. China, the authors, derive long-term changes in species composition, standing crop and body-size of planktonic crustaceans. The species number decreased from the 1960s to the 1990s. The cladocerans dropped from 46 (1960s) to 26 (1980s) to 13 (1990s); the copepods decreased from 14 (1960s) to 10 (1980s) to 7 (1990s). From the mid-1980s on, the dominant crustaceans also changed: Daphnia hyalina and D. carinata ssp. were replaced by Moina micrura and Diaphanosoma brachyurum at Stations 1 and 2, respectively; Cyclops vicinus replaced Mesocyclops leuckarti.Densities and biomass of Cladocera decreased markedly after 1987. Annual average densities and biomass of cladocerans were statistically differences between 1962–1986 and 1987–1996 (P > 0.01). Annual average densities of Daphnia (Station 1 + Station 2) were negatively correlated with fish yield .Since the 1980s, annual average body length of Cladocera and Calanoida decreased, while annual average body length of Cyclopoida increased. In the same years, average body length of copepods was lower during May–October than during January–April and November–December.A 12-yr data analysis showed annual average concentration of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) to be negatively correlated with annual average density of Daphnia, whilst lake transparency was positively correlated with annual average densities of Daphnia. The results imply that, since Daphnia feeds efficiently on phytoplankton, it could decrease concentration of Chl-a, and enhance water transparency.  相似文献

1. The effect of macrophytes on the spatial distribution of littoral rotifers was examined in Lake Rotomanuka, New Zealand (37°55'S, 175°19'E). Total rotifer abundances and those of abundant species, were compared between three macrophyte species, Myriophyllum propinquum , Eleocharis sphacelata and Egeria densa , and spatially across a littoral transect in relation to these species.
2. The abundances of many species, for example Euchlanis dilatata, Lecane closterocerca and L. lunaris, differed significantly between macrophyte species. More planktonic forms, Ascomorpha saltans , Keratella cochlearis and Synchaeta oblonga, however, showed no significant preference for macrophyte species.
3. Differences in rotifer abundances were evident even when different species of macrophyte grew in close proximity to one another, indicating that variations in physical and chemical conditions, which occur in the littoral of Lake Rotomanuka, could be largely discounted for much of the variation between macrophyte species.
4. Variation in rotifers between macrophytes was probably the result of a number of factors, including differences in macrophyte morphology, macrophyte age, epiphytic algal growths and the differential effects of predation by invertebrates and fish between macrophytes.
5. Variability of rotifer abundances spatially across the ecotone was less marked than between macrophyte species. The species of macrophyte occurring, and therefore the community composition and distribution of macrophyte species in the littoral, appears to be a major influence in the spatial structuring of rotifer communities in the littoral region of lakes.  相似文献

1. The calanoid copepods, Boeckella triarticulata Sars and Boeckella hamata Brehm, are major components of the freshwater zooplankton of New Zealand. It was not known whether these copepods ingest rotifers, nor whether the inclusion of rotifers in their diets might improve their fitness. The present study aimed to identify rotifer taxa which are eaten by each copepod species, and to examine the fitness consequences of the inclusion of one species of rotifer in the diet of B. triarticulata .
2. In feeding experiments using natural rotifer assemblages, both species of copepod ingested the rotifer Anuraeopsis fissa (0.4–4% of daily carbon intake), and B. triarticulata also ingested Polyarthra dolichoptera (6–30% of daily carbon intake) and Keratella cochlearis tecta (1% of daily carbon intake).
3. The contribution of rotifers to the fitness of adult female B. triarticulata was assessed by comparing survival and reproduction among five diets that contained varying densities of algae ( Cryptomonas sp.) and/or Polyarthra dolichoptera (4 μg C L−1). Boeckella triarticulata produced fewer clutches on a rotifer-only diet than on a solely algal diet, and addition of rotifers to a threshold algal diet did not affect copepod fitness relative to the solely algal diets. The present results suggest that Polyarthra at 4 μg C L−1 is not a high-quality food for B. triarticulata .  相似文献

Community level effects of predation by two invertebrate predators, the opossum shrimp (Neomysis intermedia), and the larva of the phantom midge (Chaoborus flavicans) were studied and compared. N. intermedia appeared abundantly in the shallow eutrophic Lake Kasumigaura and had a significant impact on the zooplankton community. The predation pressure by Neomysis was highest on cladocerans, followed by rotifers, and finally copepods. At high densities (maximum nearly 20 000 individuals m–2), Neomysis excluded almost all cladocerans, rotifers and copepods from the lake.Zooplankton communities were established in experimental ponds, into which C. flavicans was introduced. The predator's density was around 1 individual l–1, and was probably controled by cannibalism. Although Chaoborus larvae feed on various zooplankton species, their predation impact on zooplankton populations was markedly selective. They eliminated medium- and small-sized cladocerans and calanoid copepods from the ponds, but rotifers increased.Although the feeding selectivities of Neomysis and Chaoborus individuals were similar, the predation effects on zooplankton communities by the two predators were different.  相似文献

Large bag-type (75 m3) and tube-type (105 m3) enclosures were set up in the shallow eutrophic Lake Suwa and were each stocked with exotic planktivorous whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus maraena). The release of whitefish caused the increase in nutrient concentration in the tube-type enclosure whereas no such increase was observed in the bag-type enclosure. Bottom sediment seemed to be an important source of chironomid food for whitefish. The proportion of phytoplankton measuring<10μm and 20–40μm, which respectively corresponded toOchromonas spp. andCryptomonas sp., were lower in the fish enclosures than in the control, which might have been caused by high grazing pressure by rotifers. The predation by whitefish might have affected the species composition of phytoplankton through reducing copepod predation on rotifers, not through reducing the densities of cladocerans which directly feed on phytoplankton as many investigators have reported. The phytoplankton biomass was not affected much by the release of fish. Possible reasons are that the increase in density of rotifers reduced the biomass of available phytoplankton and also that inedible Cyanophyceae were in the decreasing phase of their seasonal succession and could not increase successfully in spite of elevated nutrient levels.  相似文献

Intact phytoplankton and microzooplankton communities from eutrophicStar Lake were incubated for 4 days with and without Daphniapulex, Daphnia galeaia mendotae, or a natural assemblage ofDaphnia species. They were sampled at the onset and terminationof the experiment for bacterial, phytoplankton, ciliate, rotifer,copepod and cladoceran densities. The cladocerans had variedeffects on the rotifers, ranging from significant suppressionof most rotifer species (Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra remata,Keratella crassa) in the D.pulex jars, to the suppression ofone (K.crassa) or no species in the D.galeata mendotae and StarLake Daphnia assemblage jars, respectively. Small ciliates (<30µm, longest dimension), such as Strobilidium sp. and Pseudo-cyclidiumsp., were adversely affected by most of the cladoceran treatments,while several larger ciliates (>81 µm) were unaffectedin all such treatments. Plankton data from 1997 to 2005 were used to examine impacts of a managed draw-down, subsequent drought and resulting historic low water levels (during 2000 and 2001) on the zooplankton of Lake Okeechobee, Florida. Prior to the drought the lake supported less than 150 ha of submerged vegetation. Following the drought, over 15,000 ha of submerged vegetation developed around the lake shore and conditions favored greater survival of age 0 fish. The zooplankton changed significantly from the pre- to post-drought period, including: (a) a near-complete loss of all dominant species of cladocerans and rotifers; and (b) an abrupt transition to a community with over 80% of total biomass comprised of Arctodiaptomus dorsalis, a calanoid copepod previously described as being resistant to fish predation. These changes persisted over a 5 year post-drought sampling period. In contrast, there were no systematic changes in biomass of bacteria, phytoplankton, inedible cyanobacteria, algal cell size, suspended solids, or any other physical or chemical attributes known to affect zooplankton in shallow lakes. Evidence points towards increased predation by fish, and perhaps invertebrates, as factors responsible for loss of cladocerans and rotifers following the drought, and indicates a need for future research to link changes in water level to shifts in predation pressure in this and other shallow lakes. We analysed the spatio-temporal distribution of zooplankton along a profile of 10 stations from the shore to the pelagic zone from April to September 1988, the period when the larvae and juveniles Rutilus rutilus, the most abundant species in the Lake, are in the littoral zone. The digestive tracts of the young roach were analysed. They fed essentially on rotifers and on cladocerans. For comparison, zooplankton was also analysed at one littoral area without fish fry. There was an increase of cladoceran density from the vegetated nearshore zone to the offshore zone. Considering the density of Bosmina longirostris, Daphnia longispina, Chydorus sphaericus and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, we observed a different distribution pattern in the course of the year. In the nearshore zone, the relative abundance of small species, Bosmina and Chydorus, was much higher than that of the larger Daphnia. From April to September, predation pressure mainly affected the smallest species: in contrast to the inshore station without fish fry, the density of Bosmina decreased in May in the littoral with fish. Chydorus was concentrated in the littoral between February and April, then grew into the pelagic zone, where predation pressure obviously was low during the warm season. The number of Daphnia, which was eaten by the fish fry at any time, remained low in the nearshore zone, which suggests that the presence of fish may cause Daphnia to avoid this zone. Ceriodaphnia which was not affected by this predation, was scarce in the nearshore zone during mid-summer. The low density of the cladocerans in the nearshore zone is likely associated with vertebrate predation by roach fry and juveniles, the result of such a process being either a depletion in density of the prey, or an avoidance behaviour.  相似文献

During the 20th century Lake Ringsjön has developed from a mesotrophic to a eutrophic lake, and the phytoplankton community has changed from a rather diverse community to a monoculture of blue-green algae. The eutrophication process has accelerated during the last decade. The most important external nutrient loading of today comes from agriculture.Although phosphorus has been shown to be the primary nutrient leading to excessive algal growth in fresh water, several biotic factors — such as interactions between nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton and planktivorous fish — may play a decisive role in the occurrence and maintenance of large algal blooms.The aim of this investigation was to study the changes in the fish community of Lake Ringsjön, especially the most dominant planktivores, and the state of the zooplankton community during the seventies. The fish fauna is dominated by cyprinids, especially roach, and there are relatively few predatory fish. During the seventies the mean size of roach decreased, and measurements of the zooplankton community indicated that the predation pressure on zooplankton had increased. The mean sizes of cladocerans such as Daphnia and Bosmina, which were selected for by the planktivorous fish, decreased; the size of the calanoid Diaptomus, which was not preyed upon by the dominating fish species, did not change. The growth of zooplankton-feeding stages of several fish species was retarded, which meant that the growth of young perch decreased, while older roach were mainly affected. In the prevailing situation, planktivorous roach can maintain a numerous population of small individuals, whereas the predatory perch is at a disadvantage, and predation on zooplankton is intense.  相似文献

The effects of planktivorous and benthivorous fish on benthic fauna, zooplankton, phytoplankton and water chemistry were studied experimentally in two eutrophic Swedish lakes using cylindrical enclosures. In enclosures in both lakes, dense fish populations resulted in low numbers of benthic fauna and planktonic cladocerans, high concentration of chlorophyll, blooms of blue-green, algae, high pH and low transparency. In the soft-water Lake Trummen, total phosporus increased in the enclosure with fish, but in the hard-water Lake Bysjön total phosphorus decreased simultaneously with precipitation of calcium carbonate. Enclosures without fish had a higher abundance of benthic fauna and large planktonic cladocerans, lower phytoplankton biomass, lower pH and higher transparency.The changes in enclosures with fish can be described as eutrophication, and those in enclosures without fish as oligotrophication. Our observations indicate the vertical distribution of zooplankton and its seasonal changes in Dubník II reservoir (Slovakia) are determined mainly by the thermal regime of the reservoir, by transparency, and by fish and invertebrate predation. During periods of circulation, zooplankton vertical distribution in the whole water column was more homogeneous, whilst during summer temperature stratification zooplankton concentrated in the epilimnion — rotifers in higher layers than crustaceans. During summer stagnation a steep thermal gradient occurred at the boundary of the epi-and hypolimnion and low temperature and low dissolved oxygen in hypolimnion offered a refuge for Chaoborus flavicans larvae against fish, enabling coexistence of vertebrate and invertebrate predation. This evidence supports our previous findings concerning dominance of rotifers in zooplankton and representation of crustaceans by small-bodied species in the study reservoir. Steep thermal gradient and the presence of Chaoborus larvae caused very low zooplankton abundance in the lower part of the water column and a reduction of cladocerans refuges against fish to layers of thermocline or closely under thermocline where Daphnia cucullata and Daphnia parvula were found. Our previous assumptions about the high density of zooplanktivorous fish in Dubník II reservoir are supported by the fact that these small cladocerans are represented by smaller individuals in the upper layers and bigger individuals in deeper layers.  相似文献

1. A year-round study was conducted in a mesotrophic reservoir to determine the dynamics of zooplankton populations as a function of food availability (edible phytoplankton), nutrient concentration, temperature and hydraulic regime.
2. Rotifer biomass was correlated with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) concentration. The abundance of the rotifers Keratella cochlearis and Anuraeopsis fissa were not correlated with food availability (measured by chlorophyll and cell counts) but showed a strong dependence on P availability. Another rotifer, Synchaeta oblonga , and crustacean species were not related to nutrient availability but seemed to be dependent on food concentrations, especially of some phytoplankton taxa.
3. In this field study, rotifers seemed more susceptible than Daphnia or copepods to P-limitation. Among rotifer species, Keratella seemed to be more susceptible than Anuraeopsis to P limitation. Different susceptibilities of zooplankton species to nutrient limitation may be important in explaining the dynamics of these organisms in natural situations. Further analyses are warranted to clarify the interactions between nutrient limitation and energy limitation among zooplankton.  相似文献

作者于1981年3月至1982年4月对武汉东湖Ⅱ站的原生动物进行了定量采集,采集结果与1962年该站的原生动物的种群数量变动作了比较。二十年内Ⅱ站的原生动物年平均量增加了2.3倍,平均每年增长294个/升。原生动物的数量增长与湖水中饵料生物(如藻类、细菌)和营养物质(如氮、磷)数量的增加是密切相关的。年数量变动的春季高峰期比过去提早出现,秋季高峰期则比过去延续的时间长,高峰期的原生动物的数量都比过去高。种类组成、特别是优势种发生了演替。通过对Ⅱ站原生动物多样性指数的改变、种量季节变动特征的分析,作者认为东湖的中心区在加速富营养化的进程,并且正向受到有机质严重污染的水果湖区(Ⅰ(Ⅳ))站过渡。    相似文献
