The zooplankton community in Lake Charles East, Indiana, was sampled from June, 1974 through September, 1977 as part of a lake restoration study. About 1.8 × 104 kg of lime and 1.8 × 106 kg of ponded fly ash were added to the lake during May through August, 1975 to precipitate phosphate and seal the sediments. Annual mean species number (5.2–11.3) and annual mean species diversity (H′, 0.9–1.3) were highest in 1976, the first year after treatment. By the second post-treatment year these variables had returned to pretreatment levels. Prior to treatment Cladocera were dominant during fall and early winter (Sept.–Dec. 1974), with Copepoda dominant in late winter and spring (Jan.–May 1975). After treatment Cladocera were dominant throughout the fall and winter (Nov. 1957–May 1976). Copepoda were again dominant in August 1976. The short term effect of the treatment appeared to be termination of the latter part of the copepod annual cycle through elimination of aestivating copepodites in the summer and increased abundance of Cladocera during the winter and spring immediately following treatment. Community composition one year after treatment was similar to that observed prior to treatment.  相似文献

Growth energy build-up and partitioning by immature bluegill sunfish were studied over the summer months from May to September 1984. Fish sampled in May showed low condition and low lipid reserves. Condition was restored to summer levels within the following month. Fat reserves were built up from 7% to 14% of body weight over the entire summer. Most (80%) of the annual length increase occurred from 1 June to 15 August. Over the winter period (October-April) condition dropped and lipids were depleted. Calculations showed that energy liberated through lipid depletion over this period could supply the energy requirements of inactive wintering fish. It is concluded that the sequencing of growth energy diversion into changes in body length, condition, and lipid build-up enhances mid-summer growth and overwinter survival.  相似文献

Controlled feeding experiments can provide valuable insights into food selection of herbivores. We conducted cafeteria trials on captive yearling white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during 2 years to determine feeding preferences in relation to plant chemical constituents, i.e., nitrogen and fibers. We simultaneously offered 8 species of cultivated and wild plants in monthly foraging trials conducted from June to October. We predicted that species preferences would be positively related to protein content from June to August and to digestible energy in September and October. As predicted, crude protein (CP) was positively related to feeding preferences, particularly as summer progressed. Feeding preferences were also negatively related to fiber content, especially in early summer. Our results indicate high protein needs over the complete growing season for yearling deer but a decrease in overall plant selectivity as summer progresses. Our results also suggest that deer browsing on cultivated plants might be due to higher CP content of cultivated plants than wild plants. To prevent deer impact on crops, managers should favor regeneration of plants rich in CP content in forests. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

During a fortnight's saturation mission with the Underwater Laboratory (UWL) Helgoland in May and June 1975, samples of the macrobenthic fauna of rocks and boulders at 15 m depth in the Lübeck Bay were collected from the same area as in October 1974, using a diver-operated suction sampler. Salinity varied from 11.1 to 15.0 S and water temperature from 7.5° C to 11.5° C. Visibility was usually about 3 to 4 m. On average, 10.449 individuals/m2 were recorded in 1975 compared to 30.474 individuals/m2 in 1974. Two species, the ascidianDendrodoa grossularia and the polychaetePolydora ciliata account for 90.8% of the total number of individuals sampled. Five species (Dendrodoa grossularia, Nereimyra punctata, Neoamphitrite figulus, Asterias rubens, Facelina drummondi) were significantly less abundant than in 1974, while two species and one group of species (Anaitides maculata, Corophium bonelli, Nemertini indet.) were more abundant in 1975. As in 1974, the angle of inclination of the substrate showed no relationship with species composition. In 1974, four motile benthic invertebrates,Nereimyra punctata, Idothea baltica, Diastylis rathkei, andFacelina drummondi were observed swarming. In 1975, onlyI. baltica was observed swarming and the individuals seemed to be less active than in 1974, perhaps related to the lower water temperatures recorded in May and June 1975 compared to those in October 1974.  相似文献

A bioenergetics-based model was used to investigate the effects of temperature, growth and dietary exposure on methylmercury dynamics in walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from two lakes sampled in northwestern Ontario. Orange Lake was smaller, warmer, had slower fish growth and higher mercury concentrations in yearling yellow perch and walleye (three fold difference in 40 cm walleye) than Trout Lake. The model was applied to test the hypothesis that higher water temperatures in Orange Lake increased metabolic needs, food consumption and mercury uptake in fish. The effects of different growths rates in the lakes were also considered. Temperature/metabolic effects and growth effects on internal methylmercury dynamics in walleye and perch were predicted to occur but be of secondary importance. Different dietary exposure to methylmercury was likely the dominant source of variation in fish mercury concentrations between the two lakes.  相似文献

In August, growth rate of young–of–the–year (YOY) Perch In lake enclosures could be explained by both YOY density and mean cladoceran biomass, suggesting that in a lake where YOY perch are dominant, growth may be density dependent in late summer and mediated through top–down control on daphnid biomass. In June, growth rate of YOY perch could not be fully explained by YOY density or by mean cladoceran biomass, suggesting that growth and survival during the first part of the summer is negatively affected by a diet of Bosmina and cyclopoid copepods only. The experiments also suggest why YOY perch have a slow growth and a low abundance in eutrophic lakes where small zooplankton dominate. The June experiment also indicated that growth of late larval or early juvenile perch improved when a larger cladoceran became available and was included in the diet.  相似文献

Growth efficiencies, ingestions rates and activity levels of walleye Sander vitreus were compared in lakes with and without lake herring Coregonus artedi . Yellow perch Perca flavescens were the main prey in lakes without lake herring. Walleye were sampled in September and October from 38 lakes in Ontario in 1998 and 1999, using multimesh monofilament gillnets. Ingestion rates were estimated from annual increments in somatic mercury and body mass, and the mercury content of yellow perch and lake herring. Walleye had higher growth efficiencies, and lower ingestion and activity rates in lakes with lake herring. Lake herring grow larger than yellow perch and therefore could provide more profitable prey for larger walleye. The results are consistent with optimal foraging theory that predicts that walleye feeding on optimal prey sizes should grow more efficiently, if the ratio of feeding benefit (energy) to cost (search and seizure) is a function of the ratio of predator and prey size.  相似文献

Trout‐perch are abundant in many North American aquatic systems, but the ecological roles of trout‐perch as predators, competitors and prey remain relatively understudied. To elucidate the ecological role of trout‐perch in Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron, North America), the spatial and temporal diet composition was quantified and the frequency of occurrence of trout‐perch in diets of piscivorous walleye and yellow perch was evaluated. From May through November 2009–2010, trout‐perch and their potential predators and prey were collected monthly from five sites in Saginaw Bay using bottom‐trawls. Trout‐perch were abundant components of the Saginaw Bay fish community, and in 2009, represented 13.5% of fish collected in trawls, with only yellow perch (38%) and rainbow smelt (19.1%) being more common. Trout‐perch primarily consumed Chironomidae (84.0% of diet biomass) and exhibited strong, positive selection for Chironomidae and Amphipoda, suggesting that their diet preferences overlap with the economically important yellow perch and juvenile walleye. Energy content of trout‐perch averaged 4795 J g?1 wet and was similar to yellow perch (4662 J g?1 wet) and round goby (3740 J g?1 wet). Thus, they may provide a comparable food source for larger piscivorous fish. However, despite their high energy density, abundance, and spatial overlap with other fish prey species, trout‐perch were very rare in diets of piscivorous walleye and yellow perch in Saginaw Bay, indicating that trout‐perch are a weak conduit of energy transfer to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the biochemical composition of Rapana venosa in relation to reproductive cycle and environment on the northern coast of China were investigated from March 2012 to February 2013. The results indicated that R. venosa has an annual reproductive cycle with synchronized gonad development in both females and males. Gametogenesis was initiated in September and gametes developed slowly during the winter, followed by rapid gonad development during spring and summer. Most individuals from this study were sexually mature between May and June, and gamete release occurred mainly between May and August. The peak of spawning was found in July and the recovery of the gonad was observed between August and November. The key biochemical components including glycogen, protein and lipid were analysed in four tissues, specifically the gonad, digestive gland, mantle and foot. The declining glycogen content in the gonad, digestive gland and mantle during maturation suggested that glycogen was consumed during the development of the gonad. Lipids and protein can be stored in the digestive gland and used during the winter in a period of food shortage. The protein and lipid contents in the ovaries increased during gonad development, which suggested that the protein and lipid had been accumulated as vitellin in oocytes.  相似文献

Bythotrephes longimanus, an invasive zooplankter from Eurasia, has caused severe declines in native zooplankton communities in Rainy and Kabetogama lakes in northern Minnesota. Both lakes have experienced a 40–60% decrease in peak summer zooplankton biomass following B. longimanus establishment around 2006–2007. In these lakes, yellow perch (Perca flavescens) are a key fishery species, and young-of-the-year (YOY) yellow perch are mainly planktivorous during their first summer. This led to concern that their growth could be detrimentally affected by the depletion of zooplankton forage. We used seining data to compare growth rates of YOY yellow perch before (2001–2005) and after (2008–2012) B. longimanus establishment in Rainy and Kabetogama lakes. Nearby Lake Vermilion, assumed to have been unaffected by B. longimanus during this time period, was used as a reference for natural variation in YOY growth in the region. YOY yellow perch length was modeled as a linear function of cumulative growing degree days (GDD) throughout the summer, and the slope of the relationship was compared between pre- and post-B. longimanus time periods for the three study lakes. The two lakes with B. longimanus showed similar decreases in YOY yellow perch growth rate relative to GDD, whereas Lake Vermilion showed no evidence of a decline in growth rates during this period. The reduction in growth rates resulted in an approximate 10% decrease in mean length of YOY yellow perch at the end of the summer after B. longimanus establishment, which could lead to further effects of this invasive zooplankter at higher trophic levels.  相似文献

In the autumn (October–December), Finnish Landrace ewes aged 1 year (yearling), 4–5 years (mature) and 7–8 years (older) were fed forages with no supplemented (control) or supplemented daily with 150 g (diet 150) or 300 g (diet 300) of concentrates per ewe in order to determine the effect of energy supply to initiate flushing on ewe productivity. Concurrently, in the summer (August–September), yearling and mature ewes were fed 0, 300 or 450 g of concentrates daily for 17 or 34 days. Concentrate supplement prior to and during mating had little effect on the live weight, however mature ewes gained weight in the summer. In the autumn, increasing proportion of concentrate in the diet reduced the length of the mating period in the yearling ewes (P=0.03) however, diet combination had no significant effect of age on conception. In August and early September, flushing did not hasten the onset of estrus and only 25% of the young ewes and 83% of the adult ewes were mated successfully. The flushing diet had no effect on the prolificacy in yearling and older ewes. In contrast, prolificacy and number of lambs weaned increased (P<0.05) for mature ewes on diet 150. In the autumn, there was a significant influence of flushing on the litter weight at birth and live weight gain from birth to weaning for older ewes however, diet 300 and the control were similar. Although litter weight at birth and weaning tended to be higher in the summer for ewes supplemented with concentrate for 34 days, the number of ewes required for a significant influence due to diet and length of flushing combination were not adequate. It was concluded that little is to be gained in lamb production by flushing ewes of the Finnish Landrace breed.  相似文献

The water mass below 3.5 m in Spruce Knob Lake was artificially aerated with a modified full lift aerator during two consecutive summers (1974 and 1975) of an investigation that began in July of 1973 and ended in September, 1975. Artificial aeration increased water temperature below 3.5 m without causing destratification. Several chemical parameters were significantly affected by artificial aeration, especially from July to autumnal overturn in 1974 and 1975. Below 3.5 m, total inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, nitrite, soluble reactive phosphorus, and total phosphorus, were lower during aeration than in the summer of no aeration (1973). Although artificial aeration lowered soluble reactive and total phosphorus, there was no significant impact on the phosphorus budget of the impoundment. In 1975, continuous aeration from vernal overturn to autumnal overturn resulted in higher nitrate concentrations below 3.5 m than in the preceeding summers. Lower pH values encountered through the whole water column in 1975 followed a brief isothermal interruption of summer stratification in early June. There was no direct effect of artificial aeration on either temperature or water chemistry parameters in the epilimnion. Significantly lower chlorophyll concentrations observed in 1975 were related to destratification in June. Primary production was unaffected by aeration.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Opercular bones from 323 perch from the River Stour were used for age and back-calculated growth determinations. Annuli were formed during May at the beginning of the growth period. Growth was minimal from October to April. Female perch grew faster than males, and the growth rates of both sexes were higher than those observed in most other European waters. Spawning occurred during late April and early May; male gonads began development in August and had attained their maximum weight in September, but the ovaries developed gradually from August until April. Immature perch had an annual cycle of condition with a maximum in June-July and a minimum in December-January. The condition of mature males and females was affected by the gonad cycle. The fecundity of Stour perch is expressed by the formula: log egg number = 2.40 log length (mm) - 1.34.
Approximately 25% of males were mature at age I and all were mature at age II, whereas most females did not spawn until age III. Ephemeroptera nymphs and minnow fry constituted the bulk of the diet of 0-group perch; Ephemeroptera nymphs, minnow fry and Corixidae were the most numerous items in I group perch, whereas older perch contained Corixidae and a wider range of fish prey species, although minnows were the most numerous of these.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The food of 0+ perch, Perca fluviatilis L. has been investigated in Windermere, the largest lake in the English Lake District. Whole guts and stomachs from 800 fish were investigated during four 24-h periods between June and September in 1975 and in 1976. Ciliates, algae, rotifers and cyclopoid nauplii constituted the first food of larval perch in Windermere. Vertical samples were taken from the zooplankton, at the same time and in the same location where the fish were sampled, and the concentration of the different food organisms studied. Electivity of the different food organisms was studied from lvlev's index, which showed positive electivity, or selection for some organisms, e.g. Bosmina obtusirostris (Sars.) and copepods (both cyclopoid and calanoid), and negative for others such as Daphnia hyalina var. galeata (Sars.), Leptodora kindti (Focke) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Leydig). In studying predatorprey relationships, Daphnia hyalina was chosen as the 'standard prey', being the most abundant of all food organisms in the diet of young perch, also because its maximum body-depth (carapace width (mm)) was among the largest of the cladocera and copepods in Windermere. Comparison of the maximum carapace width of Daphnia eaten with that of the plankton revealed that smaller specimens were taken by juvenile perch in July, but they tended to select larger organisms during August and September.  相似文献

Quantitative zooplankton samples were obtained monthly or bi-monthly 15 times from June 1974 to May 1975 at three stations in lower Delaware Bay. Two 12-hour cruises were also conducted at one of the stations.Arthropods dominated the samples in terms of number of species and number of individuals. The number of zooplankton from surface samples ranged from 58/m3 in August to 21,092/ m3 in June, while bottom samples varied from 259/m3 in August to 30,395/ m3 in October. In general, larger concentrations of individuals were found in bottom samples.Only on three occasions did meroplankton exceed the holoplankton, and these occurred at the shallow water stations. Meroplankton comprised a larger percentage of the bottom samples than surface samples. Zoeae of Neopanope sayi and Uca sp. contributed mainly to the large proportion of meroplankton in July 1974, veligers of Mytilus edulis in January 1975, and nauplii of Balanus sp. in May 1975.Copepods were the largest component of the population throughout most of the year. At all stations and depths, Arctica tonsa dominated most of the summer samples. In the spring of 1975, A. tonsa was replaced by Centropages hamatus, Temora longicornis, and Pseudocalanus minutus.During the 12-hour cruises there were higher numbers of individuals in the bottom waters in the day with migration to surface waters in the afternoon and evening. Based on cluster analysis, five time-related assemblages were discerned: June, July–August, September–November, December, January–May. Comparison of Delaware Bay zooplankton with other estuarine systems indicated that the densities obtained locally were most similar to those reported in the York River, Virginia.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Perch were sampled for their stomach contents at regular intervals throughout 24 h from June until October in 1973 and from February 1975 until January 1976. They were found to feed on benthic organisms from November until April, on benthos and plankton during May and June and on perch fry and zooplankton from July until October. Perch over a wide size range feed on similar prey. Fish showed great variability in the weight of their stomach contents. A method based on a points system was developed to estimate the weight of food in the stomach for a given weight of fish at a known time. A diel feeding pattern which varied with the season was apparent from these data. Rates of gastric evacuation were assumed to be exponential and were calculated from the drop in night-time stomach content weights when food intake was assumed to be zero. The rates ranged from 0.18 mg h−1 at a mean water temperature of 11°C in May to 0.35 mg h−1 at a mean water temperature of 17°C in July. Assuming that food consumption followed a linear rate of intake, the standard Bajkov method was considered an adequate model to calculate daily food consumption. Daily food consumption (mg dry weight) was calculated for 150 g perch for all months of the year (November to April and September and October being combined). A second series of values was calculated making corrections for the time spent in the fishing gears when food intake was zero but gastric evacuation continued. Daily food consumption figures for 150g male perch based on Winberg's hypotheses (1956) and growth data showed no significant differences from this second series of values, when both were expressed in energy terms. When certain assumptions have been tested, growth data and Winberg's equations together may be a suitable method for calculating an energy budget for the Windermere perch population.  相似文献

We studied the life cycle of the riffle beetle Leptelmis gracilis Sharp, 1888 from a population located in a river stream with lotic environments. Samples were collected monthly, between September 2018 and August 2019, from a tributary of the Hiikawa River in Izumo city, Shimane Prefecture, Honshu, Japan. Larvae were separated into five distinct groups based on size. The first and last instar larval sizes were identified through rearing methods. From these results, we determined that the larval stage of this species consists of five instars. From the monthly evaluations, the number of individuals corresponding to each instar period suggested that last-instar larvae were dominant in May and that new adults emerged from July to August. Landing and pupation were estimated to occur from May to June. Monthly observations revealed that mature eggs were present in the female abdomen from April to June, as well as from August to September. It is, therefore, predicted that overwintering adults mainly oviposit from spring to early summer, while new adults oviposit from late summer to early autumn.  相似文献

Effects of sodium fertiliser on growth, water status and yield of sugar beet crops were measured in 1974 and 1975. Sodium increased leaf area index early in the growing period, the water content of the leaves and the final yields of root dry matter and sugar in both years. In 1974, it increased leaf relative water content and diffusive conductance under conditions of moderate soil moisture deficit in August but had no effect in June or September when soil moisture deficits were low. There was also no effect in June 1975 but later, when there was a severe drought, sodium decreased leaf water potential. Further evidence of an interaction between sodium and soil moisture on leaf water status was obtained from a reappraisal of results of field experiments made between 1965 and 1976. Sodium increased sugar yield through at least two different physiological mechanisms; it improved interception of radiation by the crop by increasing leaf area early in the season and it improved the efficiency of leaves under conditions of moderate water stress.  相似文献

We used data from parasites and stable isotopes of yellow perch, Perca flavescens, to determine trophic status in four small Canadian Shield lakes as parasites allow the identification of both prey and non-prey dietary components in the host's community. Stable C isotope ratios for all perch ranged from –34 to –19 while stable N isotope ratios ranged from 4.5 to 12.5. These ranges are larger than those observed in many other fish species. Perch age was the most significant predictor of stable C isotope ratio and perch parasite fauna was the most significant predictor of stable N ratios. In particular, parasite fauna indicative of zooplanktivorous or piscivorous perch were most accurate for predicting fish trophic position and thus stable isotope ratio. Fish length and age showed fewer significant relationships with isotope ratios than parasite infracommunity or diet and suggests that trophic category for perch cannot always be predicted based on size.  相似文献

The behaviour of bathypelagic perch fry (BPF) was monitored during 21 May, 24 June, 8 August and 5 September 1996 along the longitudinal profile of Římov reservoir (Czech Republic), using acoustic methods (SIMRAD EY 500 echosounder, elliptical split-beam transducer, Sonar5 postprocessing software). In May, the BPF layer comprised a mass of solitary perch larvae at an abundance of over 31,000 ind. ha−1. In contrast, in June, the BPF layer consisted almost exclusively of shoaling individuals. The abundance of BPF increased up to 166,000 ind. ha−1. Similary, in August, fish in shoals prevailed in the BPF layer but the abundance dropped to less than 3,000 ind. ha−1. In September, the BPF layer consisted of both individuals and small groups of fish. At this time the abundance of BPF slightly increased to almost 5,000 ind. ha−1. Individual parameters describing the BPF layer, depth of the main layer, abundance of BPF in the main layer and thickness of the whole layer, differed significantly among months. The negligible abundance of potential predators below the thermocline, both in June and in August (exclusively adult perch), suggests that the BPF shoals were more likely to be created as a result of a social need rather than as a defense against predators. During similar surveys carried out prior to (25 April, 5 May, 7 May, 12 May, 15 May) and after this period (3 October, 7 November, 2 December), the BPF layer was not recorded.  相似文献
