Traditional behaviours involve the non-genetic transmission of social information across age classes or generations. French grunts ( Haemulon flavolineatum) exhibit social traditions of daytime schooling sites and twilight migration routes. Individuals transplanted to new schooling sites and allowed to follow residents at the new sites used the new migration routes and returned to the new sites in the absence of resident fish. Control fish with no opportunity to learn showed no such directionality or return. This is the first demonstration of apparent pre-cultural behaviour in free-living fish. Our observations suggest additional classes of behaviour and taxonomic groups in which pre-cultural activities are likely to have evolved. 相似文献

The possibility of reducing the stress associated with artificial rearing through a gradual transition from maternal to reconstituted milk was assessed in thirty Comisana lambs. Animals were assigned to a control dam-suckled group (Suckled) and two test groups. Eighteen to twenty-four hours after parturition, test lambs were separated from their dams: 10 subjects were offered a commercial milk substitute (Sub), whereas the other ten (Mix) were subjected to a gradual transition from maternal to reconstituted milk over ten days. Test-lambs had free access to milk 3 h a day. In vivo cell-mediated immune response of lambs to phytohemagglutinin percutaneous injection was evaluated at 5, 15 and 25 days of age. At 10 and 20 days of age, all lambs were subjected to 15 min isolation tests, during which latency time to move, duration of movement and number of bleats were recorded. Blood samples were collected immediately before the test, 15 and 60 min after in order to assess the effect of differential rearing on cortisol response of animals at different ages. In addition, weight gains of all lambs and milk intakes of test lambs were recorded during the first 35 days of age at weekly intervals. Sub showed a lower immune response ( P<0.01) and, at 10 days of age, increased levels of plasma cortisol ( P<0.001) as well as a reduced duration of movement ( P<0.001) and a longer latency time to move ( P<0.001) compared to Suckled and Mix. There were no significant differences between Suckled and Mix for both immune, cortisol and behavioural responses. Mix lambs consumed more milk ( P<0.006) and had higher weight gains ( P<0.001) compared to Sub lambs. However, Mix lambs gained less weight on average ( P<0.05) than Suckled lambs. Our results suggest that a gradual transition from maternal to reconstituted milk is effective in stimulating milk consumption and minimising the detrimental effects of artificial rearing on behavioural, endocrine and immune responses of lambs. 相似文献

Plasma free-corticosteroid concentrations, aggressive behaviour and levels of motivation to socially interact and explore a novel arena were observed in an experiment to examine whether differences previously observed between pigs in neck-tethers and groups are shown by pigs of different genotypes. Thirty-two pregnant gilts of 2 genotypes were housed in either tether stalls or groups. The 2 genotypes were mainly Large White×Landrace stock, but one had been intensively selected on the basis of growth performance. Genotypic differences had previously been observed in protein and energy metabolism, and the present experiment also showed differences in their behaviour (increased activity and a decreased motivation to socially interact in the intensively selected genotype) and free-corticosteroid concentrations (40% lower in the intensively selected genotype). In spite of these differences, the behavioural and physiological responses to housing treatments were similar. In tether stalls, pigs of both genotypes had a higher frequency of retaliation and a lower frequency of withdrawal in response to aggressive interactions than group-housed pigs. There were 50 and 56% increases in free-corticosteroid concentrations in response to tether housing in the 2 genotypes, providing evidence of a chronic stress response of a magnitude sufficient to suggest a risk to welfare in the design of tether stall used in this experiment. 相似文献

Experiments were done to investigate the arousal and cardiopulmonary responses to hyperoxic hypercapnia in 8 lambs. Each lamb was anaesthetized and instrumented for recordings of electrocorticogram, electro-oculogram, nuchal and diaphragm electromyograms and measurements of arterial blood pressure and haemoglobin oxygen saturation. No sooner than 3 days after surgery, measurements were made in quiet sleep and active sleep during control periods when the animal was breathing 21% oxygen and during experimental periods of hyperoxic hypercapnia when the animal was breathing 10% carbon dioxide and 30% oxygen. Hyperoxic hypercapnia was terminated during each epoch by returning the inspired gas mixture to 21% oxygen once the animal aroused from sleep. Arousal occurred from both sleep states during hyperoxic hypercapnia but was delayed in active sleep compared to quiet sleep (active sleep 58 +/- 17 s; quiet sleep 21 +/- 10 s; mean +/- 1SD). There were no significant changes in heart rate or blood pressure during hyperoxic hypercapnia before arousal. However, respiratory rate and diaphragm electrical activity did increase during hyperoxic hypercapnia before arousal. Thus, our data provide evidence that hypercapnia can initiate arousal from sleep in young lambs. The mechanisms responsible for this response are yet to be determined. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. A circular humidity gradient apparatus with a porous cellulose substrate was used to compare the humidity responses of pseudoworkers (immature wood-feeding forms) of five species of dry-wood termites. Four of these species are widely distributed pests of buildings: Cryptotermes brevis (Walker), C. cynocephalus Light, C. dudleyi Banks and C. havilandi (Sjöstedt). The fifth species, C. naudei Coaton, has not been recorded from buildings. C. havilandi, C. cynocephalus and C. naudei were found to tend to group and feed at humidites above 90% r.h., while C. dudleyi pseudoworkers avoided humidities above 90% r.h. and below 70% r.h. These results accord with the results of studies on the effects of relative humidity on feeding and reproduction of these species. The behaviour of the most widespread species, C. brevis , seems to be closely associated with its ability to undergo acclimatization and to feed efficiently at either medium ( c. 60%) or high ( c. 90%) relative humidity. C. brevis kept at 89% r.h. showed an increased tendency to group at humidities above 90%, with a lower temperature preference, changes in faecal pellet formation and, for one population at least, an increased tolerance of exposure to saturated air. The humidity preferences at constant temperature were compared with the temperature preferences of the same individuals examined in uniform humidity. The value of behavioural responses as indicators of physiological differences between species and populations is considered. 相似文献

The relative importance of chylomicrons (Sf greater than 400) and very low density lipoproteins (Sf 20--400) in transporting lipids in lymph was investigated in surgically prepared adult sheep and pre-ruminant lambs fed low fat diets or infused intraduodenally with corn oil. The concentration of triacylglycerol in the intestinal lymph of sheep and lambs was increased from 520 and 925 mg/100 ml to 2326 and 2367 mg/100 ml respectively when corn oil was infused into the duodenum and the ratio of triacylglycerol to phospholipid changed from 3.7 and 5.5 to 9.5 and 9.7 respectively. The flow of lymph also increased. Electron microscopy and analytical and preparative ultracentrifugation showed that lymph lipoproteins from sheep and lambs fed low fat diets consisted mainly of lipoproteins 50 nm in diameter and that very low density lipoproteins (Sf 20--400) contirbuted up to 75% of the Sf greater than 20 lipoproteins. There were no lipoproteins with diameters above 150 nm. Infusion of corn oil into the duodenum of sheep and lambs increased the diameters of lymph lipoproteins. Most were 80--100 nm in diameter but substantial numbers above 150 and up to 400 mn were observed. The maximum contribution of very low density lipoproteins (Sf 20--400) to lipoproteins of Sf greater than 20 was 27--30%. The above findings demonstrate that the size of intestinal lymph lipoprotein particles increases with the amount of lipid absorbed from the small intestines and that the transport of lymph lipids, in ruminants, is similar to that previously found in rats, rabbits and man. 相似文献

It has been suggested that intensive grazing management, aimed at maintaining plant diversity, might not be the optimal choice to preserve diversity of insects in semi-natural pastures. In the present study the behaviour of flower visiting insects was studied in two semi-natural pastures in central Sweden. Two grazing treatments were established with one grazed from mid-May, “continuous”, and one grazed from mid-July, “late”. Flower visitors were followed for 9 weeks in summer 2003 in 7 pairs of 5 × 5 m plots on two sides of a fence dividing the two grazing treatments. Visitor behaviour was studied on three decision levels between: (1) habitats, (2) flowers and (3) activities on flowers. The pattern varied between decision levels: More species and individual visitors chose to forage in the late grazing treatment. Visitation rate and flower constancy did not differ between treatments and was related, to a large extent, to plant species richness. In relation to flowers, insects utilized a broader diversity of activities in the late grazing treatment. All patterns were consistent across sites and during the whole study period. The differences in pollinator abundance and activities on flowers were best explained by the higher abundance of flowers. It is suggested that studies of insect behaviour may be a useful tool when deciding on management recommendations. Late grazing is recommended as a useful management regime and might potentially function as a substitute for mowing in the future. 相似文献

The effects of four housing treatments (neck-tethers, stalls, a group indoors and a group in a paddock), imposed at 3–5 weeks after mating, were determined on the behaviour and physiology of 24 pigs. Behaviour observations were made 2–3 days after the treatments began and 4 and 9 weeks later, and physiological measurements were made 18 and 46 days after the treatments began. Pigs in tethers spent less time in active behaviours than all other treatments, and the pigs housed in stalls showed increased amounts of oral—Nasal behaviours such as manipulation of drinkers and licking/biting pen components (7% of observations) compared to all other treatments (3.1–4.8% of observations). The pigs in tethers had highest free corticosteroid levels “at rest” (2.2 ng ml ?1 compared to an average of 1.4 ng ml ?1 for the other treatments), a disrupted rhythm of corticosteroid levels and, at the second sampling period (9–12 weeks of pregnancy), a lower response to transport; these responses in the tethered pigs were associated with an increase in plasma glucose and a decrease in plasma urea levels. These physiological data indicate a chronic stress response and a significant metabolic cost resulting from housing pigs in tethers. The implications of the results to the welfare of pregnant pigs are discussed. 相似文献

Ovaries were obtained from 78 new-born lambs (12 singletons, 25 twins, 28 triplets, 10 quadruplets and 3 quintuplets) from flocks selected for (T902, T903 and Booroola) or against (O) multiple births. Sections of the ovaries were examined with a projection microscope and the numbers of all types of follicles were estimated. There were no differences between genetic lines in the number of primordial follicles, after adjustment for litter size and sire; however, there were significantly more of these follicles in single-born lambs than in lambs born in litters of two or more within genetic lines. Some physiological and behavioural responses were observed in German Brown, Holstein-Friesian and White Fulani heifers during four different quarters of the year in an attempt to assess their adaptability to the seasonal equatorial climate of Southern Nigeria. Rectal temperatures under shade conditions showed slight but significant (P<0.05) fluctuations. Holstein heifers experienced hyperthermia and panted in the sun, unlike the Brown and Fulani cattle. Breathing rate showed a highly significant (P<0.01) seasonal variation. The heifers were generally most comfortable during the wettest periods of the year. The Holstein and Fulani showed the highest and lowest responses respectively. The Fulani did not seek shade; the Holstein sought shade more frequently than the Brown heifers. The Brown are more adaptable than the Holstein to the hot humid environment in which the Fulani cattle are relatively comfortable. 相似文献

Based on energy deposition and energy intake the utilization of energy for fat and protein deposition and the mean energy utilization for growth as well as the energy requirement for maintenance were estimated in this study. Fifty-four male and 54 female lambs were fed at three feeding levels and slaughtered at various body weights (BW): 18, 30, 45, and 55 kg. Based on the method of the comparative slaughter technique the total body of each animal was analysed. From the data of empty-body gain, fat, protein and energy deposition in the different fattening periods was calculated. The utilization of metabolizable energy for growth and maintenance was estimated by a multiple linear regression model. In this regression model, a utilization of energy for fat deposition of 71% and for protein deposition of 30% was determined (R2 = 0.869). The requirement for maintenance was 520 kJ x kg BW(-0.75) x d(-1). A slightly higher requirement for maintenance was determined for female lambs. The study indicated that the used regression model can be recommended to estimate the utilization of energy and the requirement for maintenance in growing lambs. 相似文献

Zebrafish are a widely utilised animal model in developmental genetics, and owing to recent advances in our understanding of zebrafish behaviour, their utility as a comparative model in behavioural neuroscience is beginning to be realised. One widely reported behavioural measure is the novel tank-diving assay, which has been often cited as a test of anxiety and stress reactivity. Despite its wide utilisation, and various validations against anxiolytic drugs, reporting of pre-test housing has been sparse in the literature. As zebrafish are a shoaling species, we predicted that housing environment would affect their stress reactivity and, as such, their response in the tank-diving procedure. In our first experiment, we tested various aspects of housing (large groups, large groups with no contact, paired, visual contact only, olfactory contact only) and found that the tank diving response was mediated by visual contact with conspecifics. We also tested the basal cortisol levels of group and individually housed fish, and found that individually housed individuals have lower basal cortisol levels. In our second experiment we found ethanol appeared to have an anxiolytic effect with individually housed fish but not those that were group housed. In our final experiment, we examined the effects of changing the fishes' water prior to tank diving as an additional acclimation procedure. We found that this had no effect on individually housed fish, but appeared to affect the typical tank diving responses of the group housed individuals. In conclusion, we demonstrate that housing represents an important factor in obtaining reliable data from this methodology, and should be considered by researchers interested in comparative models of anxiety in zebrafish in order to refine their approach and to increase the power in their experiments. 相似文献

Recent measurements of remarkable dive performances in oceanic seabirds and marine mammals suggest the use of a range of physiological and behavioural adaptations for the parsimonious use of oxygen. Access to food at different depths may be directly related to the duration of the breath-hold, and several physiological strategies may be used to extend dive duration. Entire and castrate male lambs, which were cranial cervical ganglionectomized (GX) or untreated, were utilized in a study of responses to intravenous GnRH; 24 animals were treated at both 101 and 277 days of age. GX caused a reduction in basal LH concentrations of both wethers and rams at the first sampling, but increased pre-injection levels of this hormone in 277 day old wethers. Basal LH levels of castrates were substantially higher than those of entires, but GX had no significant influence on pretreatment testosterone secretion in rams. GnRH treatment elevated plasma LH levels in all animals, while in entires increases in testosterone concentrations also occurred. Castration significantly increased peak LH levels together with total LH output. At neither age were the LH or testosterone reponses influenced significantly by GX, nor was the interaction of castration and GX significant for LH response data. The major effect of age at GnRH treatment was that markedly higher testosterone responses were recorded from the older rams. 相似文献

Stability of ‘state’ has been suggested as an underlying factor explaining behavioural stability and animal personality (i.e. variation among, and consistency within individuals in behavioural responses), but the possibility that stable social relationships represent such states remains unexplored. Here, we investigated the influence of social status on the expression and consistency of behaviours by experimentally changing social status between repeated personality assays. We used male domestic fowl ( Gallus gallus domesticus), a social species that forms relatively stable dominance hierarchies, and showed that behavioural responses were strongly affected by social status, but also by individual characteristics. The level of vigilance, activity and exploration changed with social status, whereas boldness appeared as a stable individual property, independent of status. Furthermore, variation in vocalization predicted future social status, indicating that individual behaviours can both be a predictor and a consequence of social status, depending on the aspect in focus. Our results illustrate that social states contribute to both variation and stability in behavioural responses, and should therefore be taken into account when investigating and interpreting variation in personality. 相似文献

In two trials, lambs were trickle infected with 400 or 1000 infective larvae of Haemonchus contortus (HcL(3)), twice weekly for 4 weeks from the day of birth. Following anthelminthic treatment at 6 weeks (Trial 1) or 7 weeks of age (Trial 2), lambs were challenged 1 week later with a trickle infection totalling 5000 (Trial 1) or 10000 HcL(3) (Trial 2). In both cases, significant protection (P<0.05) ranging from 42 to 79% was achieved against egg and worm counts. Serum antibody responses as well as abomasal lymph node cell proliferation and production of interferon-gamma or interleukin (IL)-5 did not differ significantly between immunised and control lambs. The results are consistent with earlier findings that neonatal lambs can generate protective immunity against Trichostrongylus colubriformis, but the underlying mechanism(s) remain to be determined. 相似文献
