Seagrass beds in South-east Asia sometimes consist of a mosaic of different species in monospecific patches. We examined whether the magnitude of within-patch variation in the seagrass Halophila ovalis is affected by the presence or absence of surrounding vegetation consisting of another seagrass species Thalassia hemprichii in an intertidal flat in Thailand waters. We measured biomass and growth rates of H. ovalis at the edges and centers of two different types of patches: (i) H. ovalis patches adjoining T. hemprichii vegetation (HT patches), and (ii) H. ovalis patches adjoining unvegetated sand flats (HS patches). Furthermore, we examined the possible effects of interspecific interactions on the growth of H. ovalis by experimentally removing adjoining T. hemprichii at the edges of HT patches. The biomass of H. ovalis was greater at the patch centre than the patch edge in both types of patches. For the growth rate of H. ovalis, significant interactions were detected between patch types and positions in patches. The difference in growth was significant and more than 4-fold between edges and centers of the HS patches, whereas the growth was not significantly different between edges and centers of the HT patches. The removal of T. hemprichii did not significantly affect the growth rate of H. ovalis at the edge of the HT patches. These findings demonstrate that the magnitude of within-patch variation in H. ovalis growth is affected by the conditions of adjoining habitats. However, any effects of local competition with T. hemprichii on H. ovalis growth were not evident in this short-term manipulative experiment. 相似文献

Taxonomic and ecological studies of freshwater harpacticoid copepods are limited globally by the ability to easily and accurately identify specimens. Here, we test the use of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene locus as a tool for assessing the diversity of freshwater Harpacticoida. We obtained sequences from New Zealand harpacticoid copepods, representing two families, five genera and nine species, including the non-indigenous Elaphoidella sewelli. All species were delineated by the COI gene. However, high intraspecific diversity was evident among populations of Elaphoidella bidens (>12%), and between North and South Island populations of Bryocamptus pygmaeus (>18%), potentially indicating the presence of morphologically cryptic taxa. We suggest that mitochondrial DNA (COI) sequences can provide a useful tool for the routine identification of freshwater harpacticoid copepods. Applications of these data will include assessing species diversity and biogeography as well as assisting with the detection of non-indigenous species. 相似文献

Halophila ovalis on the intertidal flat of SW Thailand maintains its presence under heavy grazing by dugongs; nevertheless, the site provides
lower availability of nutrients in the water column to the seagrasses due to emersion during ebb tide. To examine the seasonality
of the nutrient status of fast-growing H. ovalis in the intertidal flat, and to assess whether emersion at low tide affects the availability of nutrients and inorganic carbon,
monthly changes in carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) concentrations of H. ovalis were determined. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios were also determined to examine the carbon and nitrogen sources.
CNP concentrations of the leaves and petioles of H. ovalis at the intertidal flat were considerably lower than those of the same species previously reported from a subtidal environment
throughout the observation period of 8 months. The δ13C of the above-ground parts of H. ovalis was lower than in previous reports, suggesting that CO2 was sufficient for its growth. The CNP concentrations of H. ovalis on the intertidal flat increased after a decrease in grazing pressure by dugongs. It is suggested that H. ovalis sustained rapid growth on the intertidal flat by lowering its nutrient concentrations under heavy grazing by dugongs to maintain
its presence.

The algicidal and growth-inhibiting bacteria associated with seagrasses and macroalgae were characterized during the summer of 2012 and 2013 throughout Puget Sound, WA, USA. In 2012, Heterosigma akashiwo-killing bacteria were observed in concentrations of 2.8 × 106 CFU g−1 wet in the outer organic layer (biofilm) on the common eelgrass (Zostera marina) in north Padilla Bay. Bacteria that inhibited the growth of Alexandrium tamarense were detected within the biofilm formed on the eelgrass canopy at Dumas Bay and North Bay at densities of ∼108 CFU g−1 wet weight. Additionally, up to 4100 CFU mL−1 of algicidal and growth-inhibiting bacteria affecting both A. tamarense and H. akashiwo were detected in seawater adjacent to seven different eelgrass beds. In 2013, H. akashiwo-killing bacteria were found on Z. marina and Ulva lactuca with the highest densities of ∼108 CFU g−1 wet weight at Shallow Bay, Sucia Island. Bacteria that inhibited the growth of H. akashiwo and A. tamarense were also detected on Z. marina and Z. japonica at central Padilla Bay. Heterosigma akashiwo cysts were detected at a concentration of 3400 cysts g−1 wet weight in the sediment from Westcott Bay (northern San Juan Island), a location where eelgrass disappeared in 2002. These findings provide new insights on the ecology of algicidal and growth-inhibiting bacteria, and suggest that seagrass and macroalgae provide an environment that may influence the abundance of harmful algae in this region. This work highlights the importance of protection and restoration of native seagrasses and macroalgae in nearshore environments, in particular those regions where shellfish restoration initiatives are in place to satisfy a growing demand for seafood. 相似文献

Detritus-based marine ecosystems such as mangrove and seagrass are of immense ecological importance. Major seagrass meadows from three coral atolls of the Lakshadweep group (Arabian Sea) were studied for their floral components. Seagrass beds were heterogeneous, comprising mainly of Thalassia hemprichii and Cymodocea rotundata, in Agatti and Kavaratti and it was observed to be monospecific (T. hemprichii) in the Kalpeni lagoon. Maximum (0.34 km2) and minimum (0.005 km2) extent of seagrass beds were observed in Kavaratti and Agatti lagoons, respectively. Seagrass weight (dry) of 43.97, 30.88 and 0.74 t were estimated from Kavaratti, Kalpeni, and Agatti, respectively. Maximum biomass occurred from 0–2 m depth, mainly contributed by the aboveground shoots, and was found to be negatively correlated with depth (r=0.71, p<0.05). Sediments were devoid of seed reserves indicating seagrass growth mainly by vegetative propagation. Epiphytes, on an average, contributed 7.5% of the seagrass biomass and were dominated by algae such as Melobesia spp., Microcoleus lyngbyaceus and Ceramium spp. Epiphytic biomass, too, decreased with increasing depth. A central problem in relating disturbance to community structure lies in determining how community structure is affected by the size of disturbance events. In soft-bottom habitats, recovery rate and patterns of macrobenthic community are usually affected by the spatial scale of disturbance. Thus far, no studies have explicitly addressed these issues for meiobenthic copepods. To test the effects of the size of hypoxia/anoxia disturbance on the recovery of meiobenthic copepod communities in a vegetated (Ruppia cirrhosa) sediment, a field experiment was set up in Valle Smarlacca, a brackish lagoon on the northern Adriatic coast of Italy. Plots of three different sizes—small (40×40 cm), medium (80×80 cm) and large (160×160 cm)—were exposed to experimentally induced hypoxia/anoxia for 5 days. Control plots of 40×40 cm were added, for comparison with ambient abundance. Recolonisation and community recovery were then observed for 12 days, with samplings on days 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12. Sampling was designed to focus on the distance from source pools of colonists. The induced anoxia had a severe impact on the copepods, but the impact of the disturbance was independent of plot size. Copepod abundance increased linearly over time, and no differences in recolonisation rate among the differently sized plots were observed. Recolonisation comprised two phases: until day 3, abundances were low and very similar in all plot sizes; from day 5 onwards, abundances of the dominant species (which were the same in control and disturbed plots) increased, and a more diversified pattern among disturbance sizes was observed. Multivariate analyses showed a gradual response of community structure to disturbance size: copepod assemblages in small plots attained the same structure of the control plots at day 5, while for larger-sized plots this occurred later and was observed on the following sampling date. However, clear differences among the three disturbance sizes were never detected. Variability in community structure seemed to respond more to the overall impact of disturbance than to the size of the disturbed area. In the seagrass meadows of the Valle Smarlacca, several factors seem to influence the structural organisation of meiobenthic copepod communities during recolonisation processes. Among others, the recovery of the vegetated habitat to suitable conditions seems to play a much more relevant role than the size of the disturbed patches. 相似文献

The phytoplankton species composition and community structure were studied at two stations in the Vellar estuary from January to December, 1983. A total of 117 species of phytoplankton belonging to various groups, namely diatoms (90), dinoflagellates (21), Chlorophyceae (3), Cyanophyceae (2) and silicoflagellates (1) were observed during the study. The species diversity, richness and evenness values varied from 0.7 to 4.2 units/individual, 0.9 to 5.7 and 0.19 to 0.75 respectively. Within the scope of a seagrass monitoring program in the Novigrad Sea, Central Croatian Adriatic, we predicted that the annual variability in coverage of seagrasses (Zostera marina, Zostera noltii, and Cymodocea nodosa) can be partially explained by the annual variability in sediment translocation. From 23 fixed DGPS-referenced monitoring video transects followed over three years (June 2007-2009), we calculated annual (i) changes in interior bed seagrass coverage, (ii) gain in seagrass at the lower edge of the bed and seagrass bed expansion, and (iii) accumulation of sediment, its depth dependence, and the associated changes in transect slope. We found that in 2007 to 2008, the year with net sediment accumulation, seagrass coverage increased and the bed expanded. In both years seagrass cover within the seagrass bed increased with increasing sediment accumulation, while seagrass bed expansion was highest under intermediate sedimentation rates. Boat-based videographic monitoring can document both natural sediment movement along the depth gradient, and species-specific responses necessary for informed management of submerged aquatic vegetation in the Adriatic Sea. 相似文献

The effects of opening the Suez Canal as a connection between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea were reported for a number of marine species. However, the evolutionary origin of the seagrasses in the Red Sea and the linking population genetics of seagrasses between the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea have not yet been investigated in detail. The invasion of Halophila stipulacea Asch. from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean Sea after the opening of the Suez Canal was already recorded. We hypothesize that Halophila ovalis populations in the Red Sea developed through long-term historical processes such as vicariant evolutionary diversification. Seagrass samples were collected along the Egyptian coastline of the Red Sea and analysed by the molecular marker ITS. The sequences were compared with published ITS sequences from seagrasses collected in the whole area of interest. In this study, we reveal the linking population genetics, phylogeography and phylogenetics of two dominant seagrass species, Halophila stipulacea and Halophila ovalis, among species collected in the Red Sea and worldwide. The results indicate that the Red Sea Halophila ovalis populations do not group to Halophila ovalis worldwide, and Halophila major, Halophila ovalis collected worldwide and Halophila ovalis collected at the Red Sea are sister clades. Hence, vicariant evolutionary diversification for Halophila ovalis may occur in the Red Sea. 相似文献

Variation in the species of freshwater harpacticoid copepods in Japan. II. Attheyella nakaii (Brehm)
Morphological variation in Attheyella nakaii, a dominant species of the genus in the mountain waters of Japan, is presented. The greatest proportion of male type furcal rami in the females of local populations is seen at the northern border of the range, where this species shows a sympatric distribution with A. yesoensis. Diminution of the inner lateral setae of endopodites on legs 2–4 occur in Kyushu and the Ryukyu Islands. The body size and relative length of the leg 5 exopodite show a latitudinal cline. The population of the type locality of this species exhibits a truncated form of furcal rami. 相似文献

Zooplankton communities from 499 lakes were examined for calanoid copepod species. Limnocalanus macrurus and Senecella calaloides are confined to Lakes Michigan, Superior and one inland lake each. Eurytemora affinis has recently become established in the coastal waters of Lakes Michigan and Superior. Epischura lacustris is present in the summer plankton of a wide variety of lake types. Aglaodiaptomus leptopus is sensitive to fish predation and confined to small lakes without fish. Leptodiaptomus ashlandi is restricted to Lakes Michigan and Superior, but L. sicilis is also found in some inland lakes. Leptodiaptomus minutus is a boreal species found mostly in lakes of the far north. Skistodiaptomus oregonensis is the most commonly occurring calanoid and seems well adapted to lakes of the meso-to low eutrophic types. Skistodiaptomus pallidus is also generally distributed throughout the state, but less common than oregonensis and adapted to more eutrophic lakes. Leptodiaptomus siciloides and A. clavipes are western species, adapted to eutrophic lakes, which are expanding their ranges eastward, aided by cultural eutrophication. 相似文献

The distribution and abundance of subtidal meiofauna in Mandovi estuary of Goa were studied from June 1983 to June 1984. Monthly faunal abundance ranged from 491 to 2791/10 cm2 and dry weight biomass from 0.16 to 2.80 mg 10 cm2. Free living nematodes were the dominant group contributing over 75% of the total density and 30 to 42% of the total biomass. Among nematodes the deposit feeders were more abundant in fine muddy substratum while epigrowth feeders dominated in sandy substratum.Harpacticoids were next, comprising 6.9 to 8.7% of the total meiofauna number, followed by turbellaria (3.8–4.5%), polychaeta (2.8–3.2%) and ostracods (1.6–4.5%) The contribution of other groups to faunal density was 4.5–6.2%. In the biomass the ostracods contributed most (29.8–54.7%), followed by nematodes (23.8–34.6%). Over 60% of the fauna occurred in the top 2 cm of the sediment and the faunal density reduced significantly with increasing depth in the sediment. The vertical distribution of meiofauna was positively correlated to the vertical distribution of Eh, chlorophyll a and interstitial water. Seasonality was greatly influenced by the south-west monsoon and the fauna quickly repopulated after the monsoon. Salinity, temperature and food influenced the faunal abundance. 相似文献

A new species of gobiid fish Glossogobius minutus collected from the south-west coast of India is described. The morphological, morphometric and meristic characters were studied with special emphasis on osteology. The various characters are compared with those of G. giuris (Harn.) and G. biocellatus (Val.), the only other species of the genus reported from this region. During the analysis of phytal meiobenthic samples collected from a rocky-sandy beach in the state of Nayarit, in the Mexican Pacific, several specimens of harpacticoid copepods were obtained and taxonomically examined. These specimens were found to represent an undescribed species of the peltidiid genus Peltidium Philippi, 1839. The new species, Peltidium nayarit
sp. n. is described herein. It resembles Peltidium nichollsi Geddes and Peltidium lerneri Geddes from Bahamas but also the widespread Peltidium speciosum Thompson & Scott and Peltidium purpureum Philippi. The new species from the Mexican Pacific differs from its known congeners by its possession of a unique combination of characters, including a modified pectinate seta on the antennary exopod, three terminal setae on the second endopodal segment of leg 1, third exopodal segment of leg 1 with three elements, inner terminal claw twice as long as outer claw, female fifth leg with 5 exopodal setae, exopodal setae I-III stout, spinulose and seta IV being as long as seta V. This is the second species of the family known to be distributed in the Eastern Tropical Pacific and in Mexico. Pending additional data, the distribution of this species appears to be restricted to this area of the Mexican Pacific. 相似文献

Shallow-water vegetated estuarine habitats, notably seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh, are known to be important habitats for
many species of small or juvenile fish in temperate Australia. However, the movement of fish between these habitats is poorly
understood, and yet critical to the management of the estuarine fisheries resource. We installed a series of buoyant pop nets
in adjacent stands of seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh in order to determine how relative abundance of fishes varied through
lunar cycles. Nets were released in all habitats at the peak of the monthly spring tide for 12 months, and in the seagrass
habitat at the peak of the neap tide also. The assemblage of fish in each habitat differed during the spring tides. The seagrass
assemblage differed between spring and neap tide, with the neap tide assemblage showing greater abundances of fish, particularly
those species which visited the adjacent habitats when inundated during spring tides. The result supports the hypothesis that
fish move from the seagrass to the adjacent mangrove and saltmarsh during spring tides, taking advantage of high abundances
of zooplankton, and use seagrass as a refuge during lower tides. The restoration and preservation of mangrove and saltmarsh
utility as fish habitat may in some situations be linked to the proximity of available seagrass. 相似文献

The vertical distribution of meiobenthic copepods was investigated within muddy sediments of a eutrophic lagoon (fish ponds of Arcachon Bay, France). The aim of the study was to determine if in muddy sediments, as previously established in sandy sediments, meiobenthic copepods migrate vertically according to the seasons or diel periods. Two experimental approaches were used, viz: a three-season comparison was made of the diel vertical distribution of the harpacticoid Canuella perplexa T. & A. Scott (1893) and secondly the depth distribution of a meiobenthic copepod assemblage was followed for a 24 h period, in shallow water subtidal locations. The harpacticoid C. perplexa vertically migrated through the top three centimeters of the sediment, showing diel and seasonal variations in depth distribution. The differential vertical distributions shown by the dominant meiobenthic populations suggest that emergence into the water column may mainly concern surface dwelling copepods. The physical and biological factors affecting seasonal and diel changes in the copepod assemblage of the fish ponds are discussed. 相似文献

Aims: Evaluation of protein profiling for typing Vibrio parahaemolyticus using 71 strains isolated from different seafood and comparison with other molecular typing techniques such as random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (RAPD) and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence (ERIC)‐PCR. Methods and Results: Three molecular typing methods were used for the typing of 71 V. parahaemolyticus isolates from seafood. RAPD had a discriminatory index (DI) of 0·95, while ERIC‐PCR showed a DI of 0·94. Though protein profiling had less discriminatory power, use of this method can be helpful in identifying new proteins which might have a role in establishment in the host or virulence of the organism. Conclusions: The use of protein profiling in combination with other established typing methods such as RAPD and ERIC‐PCR generates useful information in the case of V. parahaemolyticus associated with seafood. Significance and Impact of the Study: The study demonstrates the usefulness of nucleic acid and protein‐based studies in understanding the relationship between various isolates from seafood. 相似文献

The long-standing paradigm establishing that global production of Omega-3 (n–3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) derived almost exclusively from marine single-cell organisms, was recently challenged by the discovery that multiple invertebrates possess methyl-end (or ωx) desaturases, critical enzymes enabling the biosynthesis of n–3 LC-PUFA. However, the question of whether animals with ωx desaturases have complete n–3 LC-PUFA biosynthetic pathways and hence can contribute to the production of these compounds in marine ecosystems remained unanswered. In the present study, we investigated the complete enzymatic complement involved in the n–3 LC-PUFA biosynthesis in Tigriopus californicus, an intertidal harpacticoid copepod. A total of two ωx desaturases, five front-end desaturases and six fatty acyl elongases were successfully isolated and functionally characterized. The T. californicus ωx desaturases enable the de novo biosynthesis of C18 PUFA such as linoleic and α-linolenic acids, as well as several n–3 LC-PUFA from n–6 substrates. Functions demonstrated in front-end desaturases and fatty acyl elongases unveiled various routes through which T. californicus can biosynthesize the physiologically important arachidonic and eicosapentaenoic acids. Moreover, T. californicus possess a Δ4 desaturase, enabling the biosynthesis of docosahexaenoic acid via the ‘Δ4 pathway’. In conclusion, harpacticoid copepods such as T. californicus have complete n–3 LC-PUFA biosynthetic pathways and such capacity illustrates major roles of these invertebrates in the provision of essential fatty acids to upper trophic levels. 相似文献
