The measure of order and disorder in the distribution of species in fragmented habitats proposed by Atmar and Patterson (Oecologia, 96 (1993) 373-82) was applied to investigate nested patterns of Dactylogyrus species parasitising the gills of roach. Organisation in dactylogyrid assemblages was investigated at three levels: (1) host populations between localities; (2) local host populations over seasons; and (3) individual hosts over one season within a local host population. Dactylogyrid assemblages showed nested patterns when analyses were conducted at the level of localities (among host populations) and at the level of seasons (among host populations within localities). The analysis at the level of hosts (infracommunities of parasites) revealed that nested pattern is not common. We suggest that nestedness may have a variety of causes and does not necessarily imply competition.  相似文献

Thirty-six enclosures, surface area 4 m2, were placed in Little Mere, a shallow fertile lake in Cheshire, U.K. The effects of different fish species (common carp, common bream, tench and roach) of zooplanktivorous size, and their biomass (0, 200 and 700 kg ha–1) on water chemistry, zooplankton and phytoplankton communities were investigated. Fish biomass had a strong effect on mean zooplankton size and abundance. When fish biomass rose, larger zooplankters were replaced by more numerous smaller zooplankters. Consequently phytoplankton abundance rose in the presence of higher densities of zooplanktivorous fish, as zooplankton grazing was reduced. Fish species were also significant in determining zooplankton community size structure. In enclosures with bream there were significantly greater densities of small zooplankters than in enclosures stocked with either carp, tench and, in part, roach. When carp or roach were present, the phytoplankton had a greater abundance of Cyanophyta than when bream or tench were present. Whilst top-down effects of fish predation controlled the size partitioning of the zooplankton community, this, in turn apparently controlled the bottom-up regeneration of nutrients for the phytoplankton community. At the zooplankton–phytoplankton interface, both top-down and bottom-up processes were entwined in a reciprocal feedback mechanism with the extent and direction of that relationship altered by changes in fish species. This has consequences for the way that top-down and bottom-up processes are generalised.  相似文献

Synopsis Most of the lakes in The Netherlands are turbid and without vegetation. This is regarded as the result of increasing eutrophication within the last decades. Under these conditions common bream, roach, and white bream are the most common cyprinids. In six shallow (1–3 m), wind exposed lakes the abundance of common bream and roach was linked to the abundance of pikeperch; bream dominated when pikeperch was abundant, but when the latter species was rare, roach was dominant and the biomass of bream was reduced. The biomass of white bream was always relatively low. In lake Tjeukemeer the distribution of roach < 20 cm fork length (FL) and bream was also related to the distribution of pikeperch. Only roach > 20 cm FL managed to coexist with pikeperch in the open water area, whereas roach < 20 cm was confined to the littoral zone where pikeperch was nearly absent. Bream occurred mainly in the open water and avoided the littoral zone where it competed with roach. White bream occupied an intermediate position, occurring in relatively low density both in the littoral zone and in open water. The importance of predation and competition in determining the distribution and abundance of roach and common bream in the eutrophic lakes of The Netherlands is discussed.  相似文献

Niche differentiation has been proposed as an explanation for rarity in species assemblages. To test this hypothesis requires quantifying the ecological similarity of species. This similarity can potentially be estimated by using phylogenetic relatedness. In this study, we predicted that if niche differentiation does explain the co-occurrence of rare and common species, then rare species should contribute greatly to the overall community phylogenetic diversity (PD), abundance will have phylogenetic signal, and common and rare species will be phylogenetically dissimilar. We tested these predictions by developing a novel method that integrates species rank abundance distributions with phylogenetic trees and trend analyses, to examine the relative contribution of individual species to the overall community PD. We then supplement this approach with analyses of phylogenetic signal in abundances and measures of phylogenetic similarity within and between rare and common species groups. We applied this analytical approach to 15 long-term temperate and tropical forest dynamics plots from around the world. We show that the niche differentiation hypothesis is supported in six of the nine gap-dominated forests but is rejected in the six disturbance-dominated and three gap-dominated forests. We also show that the three metrics utilized in this study each provide unique but corroborating information regarding the phylogenetic distribution of rarity in communities.  相似文献

Lake Sainte-Croix is a hydro-electric reservoir on the river Verdon that came into operation about 16 years ago. The area of the lake is about 22 km2 and the volume about 767 Mm3. The water level drops by as much as 16 m in winter. Sainte-Croix is a warm monomictic oligotrophic lake. The indigenous fish fauna of the Verdon originally included 8 species. Successive stocking has raised this number to 17. In catches made in 1976–1977 with 27 mm mesh nets, 80 to 90% of the fish with a body size of between 15 and 25 cm were of the four main species indigenous to the river before the dam was built: Leuciscus cephalus, Barbus fluviatilis, Chondrostoma toxostoma, Salmo trutta. Catches made at same period with 14 mm mesh nets gave only Chondrostoma toxostoma and Leuciscus cephalus.Changes in the fish fauna were apparent from catches made in 1984 and 1987 with nets of the same mesh size. There was a marked demographic increase of roach, and more recently of bleak and gudgeon, all three species introduced after the construction of the dam. At the same time, there was a decrease in catch frequency of Ch. toxostoma, L. cephalus and B. fluviatilis in the downstream area of the lake. Stomach content analysis carried out in different seasons on the six most abundant species of the lake (roach, toxostome, chub, bleak, perch and gudgeon) provided evidence on the trophic organisation of the fish fauna. We have measured niche breadth for each species by the Simpson diversity index and niche overlap by the Pianka index. Bleak is the only species to feed on zooplankton in open water. Roach is a particularly opportunistic feeder, sometimes taking plankton, but at Sainte-Croix it is exclusively herbivorous and benthophagous. Niche overlap between these two species is slight or null, depending on the season. On the other hand, there is a high degree of overlap between roach and chub and between roach and toxostome. The decrease in toxostome and chub frequency in the downstream area of the lake, where roach is most abundant, would appear to be a competitive exclusion phenomenon. There is high niche overlap between bleak and young perch, which partly explains the low abundance of the latter species; other contributory factors are the scarcity of zooplankton inshore, and the scarcity of zoobenthos resulting from the drop in the water level in winter.  相似文献

Parasite communities are the product of acquisitions and losses of parasite species during the evolutionary history of their host. When comparing the parasite communities of different host species to assess the role of ecological variables as determinants of parasite species richness, a correction must be made for the possible phylogenetic inheritance of parasites from ancestral hosts independent of host ecology. We performed a comparative analysis of the metazoan ectoparasite communities on the heads and gills of 111 species of marine fish. The influences of host body size, host schooling behaviour and water temperature were tested after controlling for both sampling and phylogenetic effects. Overall, water temperature correlated positively with both parasite species richness and abundance, whereas fish size only correlated with parasite abundance. The correlation across all fish species between water temperature and parasite species richness was dependent on an outlier point. The results, however, generally held when fish from different biogeographical areas (Pacific and Atlantic) were analysed separately. In all analyses, parasite species richness always correlated strongly with parasite abundance. There was no evidence that schooling fish taxa harboured richer or more abundant ectoparasite communities than their non-schooling sister taxa, possibly because of the small number of contrasts available for that test. Overall, whereas both water temperature and host size affect the number of parasite individuals that can be harboured by a fish, only temperature appears important as a determinant of ectoparasite community richness. The species composition and year-month frequency together with the abundance of the four periphytic communities of Plover Cove Reservoir (the epiphyton, epilithon, epipelon and epipsammon) were compared both in terms of all species present and in terms of major (dominant/frequent) species using the ‘circle’ method. All four communities were similar in terms of overall species composition but the richest variety of species occurred in the epiphyton. The diatom floras on wood and rock surfaces closely resembled each other as did the two sand grain floras. The former floras were, however, much more diversified than the latter floras and stood distinctly apart from them. In terms of their dominant/frequent species, the epipelic/epipsammic communities and the epiphytic/epilithic communities had the same number of common taxa (three), a further indication of the closeness between the two communities in each combination. On the other hand, the fact that the three common taxa were different for each combination again reveals the distinct differences between the two combinations. Investigations concerning the effect of the nature of the substrate on diatom growth revealed that it had little effect in qualitative terms. Quantitatively there would appear to be some effect, since differences in abundance and frequency and thus in the seasonal cycle of diatoms growing on different substrates were observed. The conditions in the microhabitats of each substrate undoubtedly determined the dominance and abundance of the flora. However, the effect of the nature of the various substrates on diatom growth varied from species to species and in general, the substrates showed little qualitative selectivity. Thus, no truly differential species were found to any great extent on any of the four substrates. The relationships between the growth of these four periphytic diatom communities and the physical and chemical conditions have also been investigated in terms of cell number and chlorophyll content. Both graphical and statistical analyses of the results are discussed, and it is suggested that fluctuations in water level, temperature and nutrients (especially silica, nitrate and phosphate) are the major factors governing the seasonal patterns of variation in periphyton standing crop. Thus, diatom growth is maximum when nutrient concentrations and water level are high and when water temperature is low, and as temperature increases and nutrients decrease so diatom growth falls. It is probable that an interplay of these factors, together with the detrimental effects of heavy rainfall and typhoons during summer, is responsible for the seasonal changes in periphyton in Plover Cove Reservoir exhibiting a winter peak as opposed to the commonly occurring spring and autumn growth peaks.  相似文献

Recruitment success of roach varied dramatically between 1978 and 1985 in Alderfen Broad, a small lake in eastern England. All size classes of roach feed to a significant extent upon zooplankton, but the underyearling fish have the greatest effects upon the abundance, species composition and mean size of zooplankton. During years of good recruitment (1979, 1981, 1983 and 1985) when the 0 + age group was abundant, they showed poor growth as a result of the depression of their prey populations. Older fish also tended to grow poorly in these years and may have been less fecund the following year. In years of poor recruitment (1980, 1982 and 1984), with the release of the depressive effect upon the zooplankton exerted by underyearling fish, the older size classes tended to grow well with higher fecundity the following season, giving rise to good recruitment of underyearling fish, even when the number of spawners was low. The evidence indicates that there is a 2-year cycle of roach recruitment in Alderfen and this will be described.  相似文献

From the years 1997 to 2000, fish assemblages from 15 groyne fields and training walls (a current guiding dyke, protecting the groyne field) of the Middle Elbe River (Germany) were examined by electrofishing. The aim of the study was to detect abiotic environmental key variables which determine preadult and adult fish assemblage in typical riverbank structures using multivariate ordination techniques (canonical correspondence analysis) and univariate methods (logistic regression analysis). Habitat preferences of preadult and adult stages of selected fish species were also estimated. Fish sampling was carried out at 190 river stretches; a further 1615 samples were taken by the point‐abundance sampling method. In total, 21 732 preadult and adult individuals belonging to 30 fish species were caught; perch, eel, ide, roach, chub, gudgeon, bleak and white bream were the most frequent. Eurytopic species clearly dominated the fish assemblage with 72% total abundance, followed by rheophilic species (26%). Limnophilic fish species (rudd, crucian carp, stickleback and tench) were relatively rare (2% of total abundance), with frequencies of occurrence between 1 and 10%. The highest species diversities were estimated in structurally diverse training walls and groyne fields with defective groynes, whereas low species diversity was found to occur in poorly structured, strongly silted groyne fields with intact groynes. Additionally, typical seasonal and annual changes of the fish assemblage were observed. From the mesoscalic point of view, the structure of the preadult and adult fish assemblage was affected by both spatial (type of groyne field, river stretch) and temporal factors (year, season). Regarding the microhabitat, hydromorphological parameters (slope, current velocity, water level, predominant and secondary substrate) followed by physicochemical water values [dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature and pH‐value] are of significance for the structure of the fish community. Furthermore, hiding places (shelter) are of subordinate but significant importance for the fish assemblage in the poorly structured main channel of the Elbe River. Importance of hydromorphological factors on the microhabitat scale was confirmed by multiple logistic regression in 12 of 14 preference models, conducted for different ontogenetic stages of roach, bream, white bream, bleak, ide, chub, gudgeon, asp, perch and eel. Habitat preferences of adult bleak and preadult roach were first determined by physicochemical water values and seasonal influences. Univariate models were generated to describe specific habitat preferences of different species and age‐stages regarding the most important environmental variables (depth, velocity, predominant substrate, slope and shelter). Intraspecific differences were noticed between preadult and adult chub regarding preferences for water velocity, or between preadult and adult perch concerning slope of shore. Interspecific differences were observed, e.g. between adult roach and white bream, with regard to the use of shelters.  相似文献

The nematodes Parasitylenchus diplogenus and Howardula aoronymphium (Allantonematidae) are parasites of drosophilids (Diptera). Nematodes were found in 3/14 drosophilid species sampled in Danish woodlands: Drosophila phalerata Meigen (3.5% parasitism) was parasitized by H. aoronymphium and D. obscura Fallén (0.5%) and D. subobscura Collin (2.1%) by P. diplogenus. Parasitism was generally rare, and few drosophilid species parasitized, compared to elsewhere in Europe. Parasitism was positively correlated with relative host abundance both within Denmark and across communities, suggesting that species diversity is promoted by a disproportionately high parasitism of more common host species. The prevalence of H. aoronymphium, but not P. diplogenus, parasitism is positively related to temperature across communities.  相似文献

Abundance data from pitfall traps are widely used to estimate the relationship between beetle body size and abundance. Such data probably overestimate densities of large bodied species and may overestimate slopes of size‐abundance relationships. Here, we test this idea by comparing size‐abundance patterns found using data from pitfall trapping with those found with data from a quantitative method of estimating abundance, quadrat sampling. We use data from a total of 47 communities. As expected, slopes of size‐abundance relationships are significantly more positive when estimated using data from pitfall traps compared to when using quadrat sampling data. This was seen when looking across different communities, within communities sampled by both methods and when focusing on the set of species found by both methods within a community. These results were also generally found regardless of method of analysis, which were done using regression with species values as independent data points and using the independent contrast method, and with slopes estimated using ordinary least square regression or the structural relation. Most important, slopes of size‐abundance relationships based on data from pitfall traps were on average significantly more positive than ?0.75 on log–log scales, and thus inconsistent with the energetic equivalence rule. Slopes based on quadrat sampling, on the other hand, were on average not significantly different from ?0.75. The rejection of the energetic equivalence rule based on data from pitfall traps here is therefore a sampling artefact. Similar problems may apply to abundance data from virtually all insect trapping methods, and should make us consider re‐examining many of the size‐abundance patterns documented so far. As a large proportion of all animal species are insects, and traps are widely used to estimate abundance, this is a potentially important problem for our general understanding of the relationship between species body size and abundance.  相似文献

Co-existence among potentially competing species can be favoured by niche specialisation and/or by reducing the overall intensity of competition via aggregated utilisation of fragmented resources. We investigated the respective roles of niche specialisation and aggregation in the case of nine congeneric monogenean parasites on the gills of Roach (Rutilus rutilus L.) belonging to the genus Dactylogyrus. The position of each individual parasite of the nine Dactylogyrus species was recorded. Niche breadth and niche overlap of parasite species were estimated. Comparative methods, which take into account phylogenetic information of the analysed species, were used. We reconstructed a phylogeny of the nine Dactylogyrus species based on morphological characters. We used the 'aggregation model of co-existence' in the model to test if species co-existence is facilitated when intraspecific aggregation exceeds interspecific aggregation. We observed a lack of negative correlation in abundance between pairs of parasites, and a negative correlation between niche size and parasite aggregation, for both intraspecific and interspecific aggregation. Our comparative analysis showed that parasite abundance is positively correlated with niche breadth. Then parasite abundance, and not interactions between Dactylogyrus species, seems to be the most important factor determining niche size This result gives some support to niche segregation by specialisation. Niche size was negatively correlated with both intraspecific and interspecific aggregation. No relationship was found between an increase of interspecific aggregation with an increase of niche overlapping, which suggests that competition may play little role. A lack of competition could be also confirmed by the lack of negative correlation in abundance between species pairs. A parsimony analysis of the evolution of gill distribution indicates a change in one parameter of the niche (arch, segment and/or area) at each branching event.  相似文献

Summary The competitive interactions between roach (Rutilus rutilus) and rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) were investigated in two habitats, the open water and the waterlily zone. The growth rates of both species in enclosures were lower when confined together than when alone, demonstrating interspecific competition. Allopatric roach had the highest growth rate in both habitats although the open water was preferred. The diets of both species were dominated by zooplankton in both the open water and waterlily zones. In laboratory experiments, roach had significantly higher feeding rates than rudd when fed D. magna and Cyclops sp. The impact of roach on the mean sizes and densities of zooplankton in the enclosures, together with the results from the laboratory study, indicate that roach were competitively superior in the open water. Because of high mortality in the sympatric waterlily enclosure, no conclusions about interspecific competition in this habitat could be drawn. The observed habitat segregation between roach and rudd was at least partly interactive.  相似文献

Factors that determine the relative abundance of bumblebee species remain poorly understood, rendering management of rare and declining species difficult. Studies of bumblebee communities in the Americas suggest that there are strong competitive interactions between species with similar length tongues, and that this competition determines the relative abundance of species. In contrast, in Europe it is common to observe several short-tongued species coexisting with little or no evidence for competition shaping community structure. In this study we examine patterns of abundance and distribution in one of the most diverse bumblebee communities in Europe, found in the mountains of southern Poland. We quantify forage use when collecting nectar and pollen for 23 bumblebee species, and examine patterns of co-occurrence and niche overlap to determine whether there is evidence for inter-specific competition. We also test whether rarity can be explained by diet breadth. Up to 16 species were found coexisting within single sites, with species richness peaking in mountain pasture at ~1,000 m altitude. Results concur with previous studies indicating that the majority of pollen collected by bumblebees is from Fabaceae, but that some bee species (e.g. B. ruderatus) are much more heavily dependent on Fabaceae than others (e.g. B. lucorum). Those species that forage primarily on Fabaceae tended to have long tongues. In common with studies in the UK, diet breadth was correlated with abundance: rarer species tended to visit fewer flower species, after correcting for differences in sample size. No evidence was found for similarity in tongue length or dietary overlap influencing the likelihood of co-occurrence of species. However, the most abundant species (which co-occurred at most sites) occupied distinct dietary niche space. While species with tongues of similar length tended, overall, to have higher dietary niche overlap, among the group of abundant short-tongued species that commonly co-occurred there was marked dietary differentiation which may explain their coexistence.  相似文献

Invasive plants have been shown to negatively affect the diversity of plant communities. However, little is known about the effect of invasive plants on the diversity at other trophic levels. In this study, we examine the per capita effects of two invasive plants, purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) and reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea), on moth diversity in wetland communities at 20 sites in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Prior studies document that increasing abundance of these two plant species decreases the diversity of plant communities. We predicted that this reduction in plant diversity would result in reduced herbivore diversity. Four measurements were used to quantify diversity: species richness (S), community evenness (J), Brillouin's index (H) and Simpson's index (D). We identified 162 plant species and 156 moth species across the 20 wetland sites. The number of moth species was positively correlated with the number of plant species. In addition, invasive plant abundance was negatively correlated with species richness of the moth community (linear relationship), and the effect was similar for both invasive plant species. However, no relationship was found between invasive plant abundance and the three other measures of moth diversity (J, H, D) which included moth abundance in their calculation. We conclude that species richness within, and among, trophic levels is adversely affected by these two invasive wetland plant species.  相似文献

1. Micro-crustacea of the genus Daphnia and Eudiaptomus have evolved different physiological mechanisms for coping with life in a rapidly changing environment. In this paper, we analyse some of the physical and biological factors influencing the winter abundance of the two species in a small lake (Esthwaite Water in Cumbria).
2. The results demonstrate that much of the year-to-year variation in their relative abundance can be related to long-term changes in the weather. The highest numbers of Daphnia were typically found in cold, calm winters when small flagellates were relatively abundant. In contrast, the highest numbers of Eudiaptomus were found in mild, windy winters when the phytoplankton community was dominated by colonial diatoms.
3. Year-to-year variations in the winter abundance of Eudiaptomus had no effect on their subsequent development but the numbers of overwintering Daphnia had a significant effect on the size of their first spring 'cohort'. The most important factor influencing the overwintering performance of the two species was the water temperature.
4. Winter air temperatures over much of Europe are influenced by the atmospheric pressure variation known as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Winter water temperatures in Esthwaite Water were strongly correlated with this empirical index and there was a significant positive correlation between the NAO and the number of overwintering Eudiaptomus.  相似文献

Synopsis Variations in abundance and survival of larvae of the major fish species, bream, roach, pikeperch, perch and smelt were studied in shallow eutrophic lake Tjeukemeer (1986–1988). Except for smelt, the size of the spawning stock and the abundance of larvae were not related. Both the timing of appearance of larvae and their growth rate were determined by water temperature as was shown by a growth model developed earlier for Tjeukemeer fishes. In cyprinids and percids the survival of the larvae was hypothesized to be negatively related to the duration of the earliest stages. Except in cyprinids, the abundance of 0+ juvenile fish could be explained by the number of larvae. In cyprinids 0+ juvenile abundance at the end of the year was not related to the number of larvae in May and June. The cyprinid juvenile survival rates are hypothesized to be related to the size of the main cyprinid predator, 0+ pikeperch.

Ecologists have long investigated why communities are composed of a few common species and many rare species. Most studies relate rarity to either niche differentiation among species or spatial processes. There is a parallel between these processes and the processes proposed to explain the structure of metacommunities. Based on a metacommunity perspective and on data on stream macroinvertebrates from different regions of Brazil, we answer two questions. 1) Are sets of common and rare species affected by similar niche and spatial processes? 2) How does the community composition of common and of rare species differ? The main hypothesis we test is that common species are mainly affected by environmental factors, whereas rare species are mostly influenced by dispersal limitation. We used variation partitioning to determine the proportion of variation explained by the environment and space in common and rare species matrices. Contrary to our expectations, evidence supported the idea that both common and rare species are affected mainly by environmental factors, even after controlling for the differing information content between common and rare species matrices. Moreover, the abundance of some common species is also a good predictor of variation in rare species matrices. Niche differences are unlikely to be the sole cause of patterns of rarity in these metacommunities. We suggest that sets of common and rare species react to similar major environmental gradients and that rare species also respond to processes that operate at a more fine‐grained spatial scale, particularly biotic interactions. We extend the view that species sorting is the dominant process structuring metacommunities and argue that future studies focusing on rarity would benefit from a metacommunity perspective.  相似文献

Wetland restoration is increasingly important to reverse habitat degradation, recover ecosystem services, and maintain biodiversity. To aid project design, more information is required on the influence of wetland size, depth of water, and isolation on the waterbird communities that become established. During a restoration project in Doñana, one of the Europe's most important wetland complexes, an experimental network of 96 temporary ponds with standard shape but variable size, water depth, and isolation was created. We surveyed the waterbird community in spring from 2006 to 2008 and related species abundance and richness to abiotic pond characteristics. We also performed analyses pooling species by foraging guilds or body size. Waterbird abundance and species richness were highest in 2007, the wettest year when the ponds had longer hydroperiods. Larger ponds had consistently higher abundance and species richness for the entire community and for different guilds and body sizes. Moreover, the density of birds per hectare was higher in large ponds than in the smaller ones. Pond isolation and excavated depth did not affect overall abundance and richness, although opposing effects of depth were observed on some size classes, and ducks and large birds preferred isolated ponds. Some bird groups preferred ponds at a particular location. This is the first waterbird study to address the importance of pond size, depth, and isolation independently of confounding variables such as pond shape. It illustrates the varied responses from different bird groups and demonstrates the importance of varying depth, location, and isolation to enhance community abundance and diversity .  相似文献
