The roles of ABA in plant–pathogen interactions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Defence against abiotic and biotic stresses is crucial for the fitness and survival of plants under adverse or suboptimal growth conditions. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is not only important for mediating abiotic stress responses, but also plays a multifaceted and pivotal role in plant immunity. This review presents examples demonstrating the importance of crosstalk between ABA and the key biotic stress phytohormone salicylic acid in determining the outcome of plant–pathogen interactions. We then provide an overview of how ABA influences plant defence responses against various phytopathogens with particular emphasis on the Arabidopsis–Pseudomonas syringae model pathosystem. Lastly, we discuss future directions for studies of ABA in plant immunity with emphasis on, its role in the crosstalk between biotic and abiotic stress responses, the importance of distinguishing direct and indirect effects of ABA, as well as the prospect of utilizing the recently elucidated core ABA signaling network to gain further insights into the roles of ABA in plant immunity.  相似文献

Plant growth and development are controlled by the concerted action of many signaling pathways that integrate information from environmental signals with that from developmental and metabolic cues. Physiological studies have demonstrated that abscisic acid and sugars have both similar and antagonistic effects on diverse processes, including seed development, germination, and seedling growth. Recent genetic studies have identified several loci that are involved in both sugar and hormonal responses. It is rarely clear whether these apparent linkages reflect direct or indirect interactions between sugar and hormone signaling pathways, but the identification of gene products that are encoded at these loci is allowing these possibilities to be tested.  相似文献

There is a severe shortage of trained microbiologists in Brazil which is hampering the development and expansion of microbiology/biotechnology research, the development of the biotechnology industries and environmental control agencies. Even some medical areas are affected. The reason for this situation lies in the deficient teaching of microbiology, where undergraduate courses in the biological sciences contain little or no microbiology, and in the low number of professionals that are produced. There are a few post-graduates courses in microbiology but these have high costs and little capacity for expansion. There is a need for incentives for the establishment of more undergraduate university courses, more practical training in specific areas, courses for retraining or updating of professionals already at work and specific programmes by the funding agencies.The objective of this article is to encourage discussion about the present state and the future of the teaching of Microbiology in Brazil. Amazonia is an environmentally heterogeneous and biologically megadiverse region, and its biodiversity varies considerably over space. However, existing knowledge on Amazonian biodiversity and its environmental determinants stems almost exclusively from studies of macroscopic above‐ground organisms, notably vertebrates and trees. In contrast, diversity patterns of most other organisms remain elusive, although some of them, for instance microorganisms, constitute the overwhelming majority of taxa in any given location, both in terms of diversity and abundance. Here, we use DNA metabarcoding to estimate prokaryote and eukaryote diversity in environmental soil and litter samples from 39 survey plots in a longitudinal transect across Brazilian Amazonia using 16S and 18S gene sequences, respectively. We characterize richness and community composition based on operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and test their correlation with longitude and habitat. We find that prokaryote and eukaryote OTU richness and community composition differ significantly among localities and habitats, and that prokaryotes are more strongly structured by locality and habitat type than eukaryotes. Our results 1) provide a first large‐scale mapping of Amazonian soil biodiversity, suggesting that OTU richness patterns might follow substantially different patterns from those observed for macro‐organisms; and 2) indicate that locality and habitat factors interact in determining OTU richness patterns and community composition. This study shows the potential of DNA metabarcoding in unveiling Amazonia's outstanding diversity, despite the lack of complete reference sequence databases for the organisms sequenced.  相似文献

Empathy is a longstanding issue in economics, especially for welfare economics, but one which has faded from the scene in recent years. However, with the rise of neuroeconomics, there is now a renewed interest in this subject. Some economists have even gone so far as to suggest that neuroscientific experiments reveal heterogeneous empathy levels across individuals. If this were the case, this would be in line with economists'' usual assumption of stable and given preferences and would greatly facilitate the study of prosocial behaviour with which empathy is often associated. After reviewing some neuroscientific psychological and neuroeconomic evidence on empathy, we will, however, criticize the notion of a given empathy distribution in the population by referring to recent experiments on a public goods game that suggest that, on the contrary, the degree of empathy that individuals exhibit is very much dependent on context and social interaction.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plantswere grown in large volumes of soil and leaf growth rate wasmonitored on a daily basis. Half the plants were given a soildrying treatment and when they showed a significant restrictionof growth rate (compared to both their daily growth rate beforedrying and the average growth rate of well-watered plants onthe same day), leaf water relations were measured and xylemsap was extracted using several techniques. There was a significant negative log-linear relationship betweenthe rate of leaf growth and the concentration of ABA in thexylem for both species. There was no clear relationship betweenleaf growth rate and leaf water potential or turgor for eitherspecies. Assessment of different methods for sampling xylemsap suggests that exudates collected from stem stumps or samplescollected by pressurizing the whole root system are suitablefor estimating ABA concentration in xylem, at least with largeplants of maize or sunflower, provided the first few hundredcubic millimetres of collected sap are used for the assay. Centrifugationof sections of stems resulted in dilution of ABA in the xylemsap with sap squeezed from parenchyma tissue. This is because,at least in plants subjected to mild soil drying, the concentrationof the ABA in the xylem is far higher than that in the cellsap of stem tissue. Results support the proposal that ABA plays a major role asa chemical signal involved in the root-to-shoot communicationof the effects of soil drying. The non-hydraulic restrictionof leaf growth by a chemical signal can be explained by theextra root-sourced ABA in the xylem and may be an importantcomponent of the modification of growth and development whichresults from prolonged soil drought. We experimentally investigated the attraction of adult butterflies to moist soil and dirt places (a behavior termed `mud-puddling') in two species-rich tropical communities on the island of Borneo. At a rain forest site, 227 individuals (46 species) were attracted to the baits, compared to 534 individuals (54 species) at a farmland site. With one single exception, all attracted butterflies were males. Of various salt and amino acid solutions, only sodium was accepted, but overall, albumin solutions turned out to be the most attractive puddling resource. Butterfly families differed consistently in their resource preferences. Representatives of the families Papilionidae and Pieridae more often visited NaCl solutions, but still accepted albumin, whereas representatives of the Nymphalidae, Hesperiidae and, in particular, Lycaenidae preferred the protein resource. In experiments using decoys prepared from pinned butterfly specimens, representatives of the Papilionidae and Pieridae were more strongly attracted to baits provided with decoys made from conspicuous, medium-sized yellow Eurema species (Pieridae), whereas dummies made from small, cryptically colored lycaenids (Prosotas and Caleta species) were ineffective. Decoys did not influence the attraction of lycaenid butterflies towards baits. Hence, visual cues play an important role in locating puddling resources for papilionids and pierids, while for lycaenid butterflies searching for nitrogen sources, olfactory cues emitted by decaying organic matter are more likely to be important. The strong attraction of male butterflies to nitrogen-rich resources suggests that, as in the case of sodium, these nutrients may increase reproductive success. Carbamylation is widely quoted as being a problem in 2-D gel analysis and the associated sample preparation steps. This modification occurs when iso-cyanate, a urea break-down product, covalently modifies lysine residues, thus inducing a change in isoelectric point. Urea is used at up to 9 M concentrations in sample preparation and 2-D gels because of its ability to disrupt protein structure and effect denaturation without the need for ionic surfactants such as SDS. We have studied carbamylation using 7 M urea and 2 M thiourea, under a range of experimental temperatures to establish when, and if, it occurs and what can be done to minimize the modification. The actual time required for protein extraction from a tissue is usually short compared to the time required for procedures such as reduction and alkylation and IPG rehydration and focusing. Therefore, it is the temperature during these post-extraction procedures that is the most critical factor. Our experiments have shown that carbamylation does not occur during electrophoresis in the presence of urea, even with prolonged run-times. However, under poorly controlled sample preparation and storage conditions, it can become a major event.  相似文献

When pea plants (Pisum sativum L.) were subjected to flooding,abscisic acid (ABA) content in shoots and roots increased upto 8-fold in the following days and stomatal conductance significantlydecreased. Although young leaves of flooded plants had a slightlyhigher water potential than those of the unflooded plants, oldleaves had lower water potential and lost turgor at the timewhen a substantial ABA increase was detected. In plants wherethe old leaves were clipped off, flooding did not cause anyABA increase during 7 d of the experimental period, except underconditions of higher transpiration demand, when the increasein ABA content was both delayed and small in scale (only I-fold).When intact plants were flooded and ABA was assayed separatelyin both old and young leaves, the ABA increase in old leavespreceded that in young leaves. Evidence here suggests that theflooding-induced ABA increase mainly results from the wiltingof old leaves. This suggests that young leaves may be protectedfrom wilting by ABA originating in old leaves under unfavourableenvironmental conditions. Extracts of various flower tissues of tobacco with 70% methanol inhibited tobacco seed germination differently. Among them, extracts of stigma and anther were very inhibitory. When the extracts were partitioned between ethyl acetate and water, the activity of the ethyl acetate layer was stronger than that of the water layer. Stigmas and anthers had more abscisic acid (ABA) than the other floral tissues, which matched the results of the germination tests well. Guided by a bioassay using the inhibitory effects on tobacco seed germination, MeABA, ABA, and ABA-γ-d-glucopyranoside were isolated and identified from stigmas. All of the MeABA isolated did not seem to be an artefact produced by esterification with the solvent, for MeABA was detected even when stigmas were extracted with other solvents than methanol. MeABA and ABA did not inhibit tobacco pollen germination and elongation in vitro.  相似文献

Exposing plants to low VPD reduces leaf capacity to maintain adequate water status thereafter. To find the impact of VPD on functioning of stomata, stomatal morphology and leaf anatomy, fava bean plants were grown at low (L, 0.23 kPa) or moderate (M, 1.17 kPa) VPDs and some plants that developed their leaves at moderate VPD were then transferred for 4 days to low VPD (M→L). Part of the M→L‐plants were sprayed with ABA (abscisic acid) during exposure to L. L‐plants showed bigger stomata, larger pore area, thinner leaves and less spongy cells compared with M‐plants. Stomatal morphology (except aperture) and leaf anatomy of the M→L‐plants were almost similar to the M‐plants, while their transpiration rate and stomatal conductance were identical to that of L‐plants. The stomatal response to ABA was lost in L‐plants, but also after 1‐day exposure of M‐plants to low VPD. The level of foliar ABA sharply decreased within 1‐day exposure to L, while the level of ABA‐GE (ABA‐glucose ester) was not affected. Spraying ABA during the exposure to L prevented loss of stomatal closing response thereafter. The effect of low VPD was largely depending on exposure time: the stomatal responsiveness to ABA was lost after 1‐day exposure to low VPD, while the responsiveness to desiccation was gradually lost during 4‐day exposure to low VPD. Leaf anatomical and stomatal morphological alterations due to low VPD were not the main cause of loss of stomatal closure response to closing stimuli.  相似文献

Few mammalian orders carry their infants clinging to the mother's fur. I investigated the evolution of carrying behavior in primates and the life-history and ecological correlates of infant care patterns. Primates are ideal for the study as there is variation in infant care patterns. Primate infants are left hidden in nests or parked in trees, both of which strategies I term parking, and are carried orally or ride clinging to the mother's fur: riding. Infant carrying has evolved several times in the Primates and, once evolved, it has been conserved. Significant energetic costs of riding are indicated as riding species maintain smaller home ranges than those of non-riders of the same body size. With body size and phylogenetic influences taken into account, riders appear to incur a reproductive cost by weaning and breeding later than parkers. Although riders do not have lower birth rates than those of parkers, their later age at first reproduction leads to their having a lower reproductive rate, measured by the intrinsic rate of population increase. Precociality of infants is not correlated with either riding or nesting behavior. Although non-nesting species have larger litter sizes, their infants are not significantly smaller, nor are their neonatal brains relatively smaller. Although riding may have some energetic and reproductive costs, its repeated evolution in the Primates suggests that it also has some benefits, the most likely being a reduced mortality risk for carried infants.  相似文献

Stomatal conductance (g(s)) of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants decreased during the second photoperiod (day 2) after withholding nitrate (N). Stomatal closure of N-deprived plants was not associated with a decreased shoot water potential (Psi(shoot)); conversely Psi(shoot) was lower in N-supplied plants. N deprivation transiently (days 2 and 3) alkalized (0.2-0.3 pH units) xylem sap exuded from de-topped root systems under root pressure, and xylem sap expressed from excised shoots by pressurization. The ABA concentration of expressed sap increased 3-4-fold when measured on days 2 and 4. On day 2, leaves detached from N-deprived and N-supplied plants showed decreased transpiration rates when fed an alkaline (pH 7) artificial xylem (AX) solution, independent of the ABA concentration (10-100 nM) supplied. Thus changes in xylem sap composition following N deprivation can potentially close stomata. However, the lower transpiration rate of detached N-deprived leaves relative to N-supplied leaves shows that factors residing within N-deprived leaves also mediate stomatal closure, and that these factors assume greater importance as the duration of N deprivation increases.  相似文献

Corridors are currently a major buzzword in conservation biology and landscape ecology. These linear landscape features may perform numerous functions, but it is their role in facilitating movement of fauna that has attracted much recent debate. The database supporting the idea of corridors acting as faunal conduits is remarkably small, and few studies have actually demonstrated that movement along corridors is important for any given species. Such data are very difficult to obtain, and conservation biologists are thus faced with the problem of whether to recommend the allocation of resources to corridors on the assumption that they may be important.  相似文献

Residual samples are an important source of tissue for biobanks. They refer to leftover tissue that is obtained in the course of clinical care. Residual samples can be included through an opt-in method-that is, a person explicitly expresses consent to include residual tissue-or an opt-out method-that is, the tissue is stored unless a person explicitly refuses. At the moment there is a renewed interest in the appropriate method for the inclusion of residual samples in biobanks. The expansion of biobanks and rapid developments in biomedical research underscore the need to evaluate the proper procedure. In this article we revisit the arguments in favor and against opt-in and opt-out methods for residual tissue research. We conclude firstly that an opt-out method is only justifiable when certain conditions are met: (1) awareness has to be raised, (2) sufficient information has to be provided, and (3) a genuine possibility to object has to be offered. An opt-out procedure that fulfills these conditions can be called a "thick" opt-out method. As a consequence, the dichotomy between opt-in and opt-out is less stark than usually suggested, as both methods require a certain amount of effort. Secondly, we conclude that because of the diversity of tissue and research, not every situation can be treated alike. There are at least four situations that require opt-in procedures: (1) research with higher risks or increased burdens, (2) the use of controversial or high-impact techniques, (3) research on sensitive tissue types, and (4) research involving vulnerable patients. We suggest that further interdisciplinary debate should answer the question when to opt-in or when to opt-out.  相似文献
