Although eolian deposits are known to record the dominant winds, secondary conditions such as wind reversals during wintertime can also be observed in the petrographic composition and facies succession. Thus, eolian deposits are used here as a local paleoclimatic proxy. The spatial distribution of the depositional facies, early diagenetic imprints, and early fracture network of a coastal Pleistocene eolian ridge in southeastern Tunisia is described using a small-scale GIS model. Facies analysis indicates that coastal dune systems record seasonal cycles. The fracture density and directions are strongly influenced by the depositional facies type. Laminated facies present a higher fracture density compared to more homogeneous facies and show only one major fracture direction, while the more homogeneous facies display a bimodal distribution. Such a difference between these two groups is explained by the heterogeneous distribution of the early calcite cement within the laminated facies. No tectonic activity or overlying strata have affected the Pleistocene dunes under study. Therefore, the mechanism responsible for the fractures could only be related to the own weight of the eolianite and to its internal or underlying lithologic heterogeneity.  相似文献

The fossil record contains abundant evidence for the activity of microorganisms in the form of characteristic decay structures within fossil plant remains. Despite an abundance of charcoal in many sedimentary environments, there is little published evidence of such decay structures within charcoal from pre-Quaternary clastic deposits. The present contribution presents some examples of pre-Quaternary charcoal from clastic sediments which exhibit pre-charring decay structures, stratigraphically reaching from the Permian up to the Oligocene. Examples include specimens affected by the principle types of wood rot known from modern ecosystems (i.e. brown-rot, white rot and soft-rot) as well as a peculiar decay pattern resembling an atypical type of white-rot, which is only rarely known from modern wood. Theoretically there are different, so far hypothetical, scenarios which could be used to explain the scarcity of published reports on such material. Besides taphonomical biases directly influencing the sedimentary record of charcoal towards material not affected by microbial decay, it is conceivable that the lack of reports of such material from pre-Quaternary clastic deposits represents a, maybe unintentional, bias introduced by scientists working on pre-Quaternary charcoal.  相似文献

Eolian deposits and landforms are ubiquitous in western Kansas, particularly south of the Arkansas River with the presence of a stabilized dune field. Stratigraphic studies and associated optical dating reveal a complex depositional history for this dune field spanning the late Quaternary. The oldest eolian deposits from ca. 16 to 12 ka completely or partially bury high terraces with ages of ca. 16 and 33 ka. It is unknown whether these eolian deposits reflect regional aridity and/or a change in sediment availability with the transition of the Arkansas River from a single channel to a braided system. There is pervasive evidence for episodic eolian erosion and deposition ca. 9.8 to 6.3 ka, generally coincident with loess deposition on upland surfaces [Olson, C.G., Nettleton, W.D., Porter, D.A., Brasher, B.R., 1997. Middle Holocene aeolian activity on the High Plains of west-central Kansas. Holocene, 7(3): 255–261], and thus it is inferred to reflect regional aridity. Sites within the dune field show a sequence of eolian sands and weak buried soils, reflecting either dune migration or sand sheet accretion at ca. 1490, 430, 380–320, 180, and 70 yr ago, which correspond well with continental-scale droughts in the tree-ring record. Eolian sand in the Arkansas River dune field may be derived principally with variability in fluvial activity and in climate during the late Pleistocene to the middle Holocene, with substantial reactivation of eolian systems during decadal-scale drought variability in the past 2000 yr.  相似文献

Summary The Quaternary carbonates of the Mediterranean coast of Egypt between Alexandria and Salum appear as parallel limestone ridges rising up to 100 m above sea level. These ridges are dominated by dunal carbonates which differ not only in their primary composition but also by distinct grades of meteoric water diagenesis. Oolitic facies dominates the younger aeolianites of the first and second ridges. Bioclastic facies with abundant coralline algae, benthonic foraminifers, molluscs, echinoderms and intraclasts represents the major rock type in the older aeolianites. Features of meteoric water diagenesis include precipitation of increasing amounts of avoid-filling low Mg-calcite spar, dissolution of aragonite and stabilization of aragonite and high Mg-calcite to low Mg-calcite. Aeolianites below paleosol horizons contain abundant calcrete cements, micritized fossils and detrital grains which are commonly corroded and replaced by calcite. Three stages of progressive meteoric diagenesis are recognised in the Egyptian Quaternary aeolianites. In stage 1 minor precipitation of low Mg-calcite occurs at the grain boundaries. Stage 2 is marked by partial dissolution of aragonite, partial loss of high Mg-calcite and precipitation of low Mg-calcite in some pore spaces. In stage 3, most of the remaining pores are occluded by cementation. At the end of stage 3, Mg is removed from high Mg-calcite but some aragonite still persists. The early vadose cements are represented by miniscus, bridge and pendant cements. The phreatic cements were precipitated as bladed spar in the isopachous rims and equant spar in the intergranular and mouldic porosity. The late vadose cements are represented by micritic cements that were related to calcrete formation. Elemental behaviour during meteoric water diagenesis indicates that it leads to a gradual decrease in bulk Sr along with Na in progressively altered aeolianites. Mn distribution is controlled by the carbonate mineralogy (aragonite versus calcite) as well as the proximity of the aeolianites to the overlying paleosol horizons.  相似文献

Quaternary aeolian deposits of the Canary Islands contain well‐preserved terrestrial gastropods, providing a suitable setting for assessing the taphonomy and compositional fidelity of their fossil record over ~13 kyr. Nine beds (12, 513 shells) have been analysed in terms of multivariate taphonomic and palaeoecological variables, taxonomic composition, and the stratigraphic and palaeontological context. Shells are affected by carbonate coatings, colour loss and fragmentation. Shell preservation is size‐specific: juveniles are less fragmented and show colour preservation more commonly than adults. In palaeosols, the adult shell density correlates negatively with the proportion of fragmented adults, negatively with the proportion of juveniles, and positively with the proportion of adults with coatings. High bioturbation intensity in palaeosols is associated with low shell fragmentation and high proportion of shells with coatings. These relationships imply that high adult density in palaeosols was driven by an increase in shell production rate (related to a decrease in predation rates on adults and a decrease in juvenile mortality) and a decrease in shell destruction rate (related to an increase in durability enhanced by carbonate precipitation). In dunes, the relationships between taphonomic alteration, shell density and bioturbation are insignificant. However, dune assemblages are characterized by a lower frequency of shells with coatings and higher rates of colour loss, indicating lower shell durability in dunes than in palaeosols. Additionally, non‐random differences in the coating proportion among palaeosols imply substantial temporal variation in the rate of carbonate crust formation, reflecting long‐term changes in bioturbation intensity that covaries positively with shell preservation. Dunes and palaeosols do not differ in species abundances despite differences in the degree of shell alteration, suggesting that both weakly and strongly altered assemblages offer data with a high compositional fidelity. Carbonate‐rich terrestrial deposits originating in arid conditions can enhance the preservation of gastropods and result in fossil assemblages that are suitable for palaeoecological and palaeoenvironmental studies of terrestrial ecosystems.  相似文献

Holocene growth of a mid-Pacific atoll: Tarawa,Kiribati   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Cores from ten holes, drilled to a maximum depth of 30 m, on Tarawa atoll in the central Pacific have been utilised in a study of the Holocene development of the atoll. Four dominant lithologies, in descending order, are cay rock, unconsolidated sediment, corals and leached limestone. Petrographic and radiometric age analyses indicate that the Holocene reef has developed on a previous (last interglacial) reef; the latter shows the effects of both vadose and phreatic freshwater diagenesis. Hydrological investigations beneath the present islands indicate the presence of freshwater lenses up to 29 m thick; the modern lenses are unrelated to freshwater diagenetic imprints preserved within the limestones. Vertical accretion rates of 5–8 m/1000 years for the Holocene reef section on Tarawa are significantly higher than rates measured for other Pacific atolls. The dated coral sequences suggest a more rapid rate of sea level rise during the early Holocene, and a relatively earlier stabilisation of sea level than has been suggested previously.  相似文献

A 14-meter long pelagic clay core recovered at Marlin Rise (40°00.531′S, 154°2.601′W; 4775 m water depth) in the Southwest Pacific Basin contains a record of eolian dust deposited since the early Miocene. Downcore analysis of detrital minerals reveals a dominantly eolian signature with relatively constant proportions of quartz, feldspar and illite and trace amounts of chlorite, kaolinite and smectite, consistent with a continental (loess-like) source region. Fish tooth Sr isotope stratigraphy reveals the base of the core to be 17.5 Ma, with low sedimentation rates (< 0.5 mm/kyr LSR) indicated for the interval 17.5 to 10 Ma; several hiatuses in deposition appear to be present upcore, but are beyond the age resolution of the fish teeth stratigraphy. These intervals are revealed as apparent discontinuities in the Sr isotope record, accompanied by pulses of anomalously rapid sedimentation at ~ 10 Ma, 6.7 Ma and 4.1 Ma. Bulk mass accumulation rates (MAR) are calculated at ~ 10 mg/cm2/kyr over the last 4 Myr, consistent with previously estimated Quaternary eolian flux rates to this part of the Pacific. Nd, Pb and Sr radiogenic isotopic compositions of the detrital mineral extract (< 38 µm) show no trends with age, while 40Ar/39Ar ages show an upcore younging trend (~180 Ma to ~150 Ma), in concert with a slight coarsening of eolian grain-size distributions. These ages likely reflect mixing of Mesozoic illite-dominated clay from at least two continental source areas: southeastern Australia (Murray–Darling Basin/Lake Eyre Basin) and New Zealand (South Island). The data indicate remarkable constancy of continental eolian sources exposed to weathering and dispersal at this latitude during the Neogene.  相似文献

Aeolian dunes controlled by regional climate have been formed in many coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea during the Quaternary. Generally, they are formed under a landward-blowing wind, and comprise numerous reworked penecontemporaneous shallow-marine carbonate grains. Along the eastern mid-Adriatic Sea, late Pleistocene aeolian and alluvial sands occur as isolated patches in karstic depressions on several islands and the Pelje?ac Peninsula. At most localities, the sands consist of a mixture of mostly carbonate rock fragments and siliciclastic material. A higher proportion of shallow-marine bioclasts was found only at one locality. The terrestrial material was transported to the coastal area by at least two rivers: paleo-Cetina and paleo-Neretva River, and was subsequently reworked and transported by wind, resulting in aeolian deposition. Sandy units of various thicknesses exhibiting sharp erosional bedding planes and cross-bedding are interpreted as representing aeolian dunes and sand sheets controlled by a complex wind regime. The mineralogical composition at almost all localities indicates near-river flood plains as the main sand source. Although the area was affected by strong winds blowing landward and parallel to the coast, they significantly deviated due to the local topography produced by the tectonically deformed and karstified carbonate basement. In this way, the late Pleistocene aeolian deposits on the mid-Adriatic islands differ from deposits from most Quaternary Mediterranean coastal aeolian belts, as they contain very small quantities of penecontemporaneous shallow-marine carbonate grains and were deposited by winds blowing in varying directions instead of prevailing landward-blowing winds.  相似文献

The Tortonian bioclastic sands of Anjou (W France) are weakly cemented mixed siliciclastic–carbonate deposits. The carbonate fraction can reach up to 90%, and is irregularly spread over the area of the original depositional platform. The temperate marine water character is demonstrated by the lack of ooids, green algae, and biohermal scleractinians, and is dominated by numerous species of bryozoans and bivalves, associated with red algae, barnacles, and echinoderms (bryomol facies; Heterozoan association). Skeletal grains are weakly cemented. The presence of large submarine dunes indicates a platform bounded by a tide-domination of a succession that developed rapidly under highstand and shelf margin wedge system tracts. The tide-dominated “Faluns de l’Anjou” provides a model different from many other examples of temperate carbonate settings, which are often wave-dominated.  相似文献

The primate-bearing Pondaung Formation (northwestern part of central Myanmar) is mainly composed of cyclic sequences of sandstones and variegated clays that are divisible into 12 lithofacies and are grouped under seven facies associations. These established facies associations represent the deposition in a fluvio-deltaic environment. The anthropoid primate remains occur in swale-fill sediments, sometimes in carbonate nodules of pedogenetic origin and also, in small crevasse channel deposits of the upper part of the Pondaung Formation. Paleosol carbonates from trenches excavated as part of a landscape-scale project in Bed I of Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, were analyzed for stable carbon and oxygen isotopic composition. The approximately 60,000-year interval ( approximately 1.845-1.785 Ma) above Tuff IB records evidence for lake and fluvial sequences, volcanic eruptions, eolian and pedogenic processes, and the development of a fluvial plain in the western margin of the basin. Significant temporal variation in the carbonate delta(18)O values records variation of local precipitation and supports the shifts in climatic conditions interpreted from the lithologic record. During this period, carbonate delta(13)C values varied between depositional facies indicating that the paleolandscape supported a local biomass of about 40-60% C(4) plants within a mosaic of grassy woodlands and wooded grasslands. The lithologic and stable isotope record in this small lake basin indicates the area was much wetter, with more woody C(3) plants, during this interval than is the semi-arid area today. The record also reflects the variation in climatic conditions (wet/dry) documented by other global climate proxies for this time.  相似文献

Abundant, well-preserved and variable species of Undichna are described from the Permian of the Falkland Islands. The environment is considered to be non-marine and the traces are associated with turbidite and rhythmite deposits. There are strong similarities between the Undichna and other ichnogenera of the Falkland Islands and those of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, thus strengthening the view that the missing eastern end of the Permian Karoo Basin is present in the Falklands. Undichna binaU. insolentia occur associated within glacially influenced rhythmite and turbidite facies of a non-marine basin in the Cantera Formation, Camilla Creek, East Falkland. U. quina isp. nov. occurs on Sea Lion Island and is associated with thin (mm–cm scale) graded interbeds between thicker amalgamated sandstones in a sequence deposited by density currents derived from a delta feeding the same non-marine basin. The elements that comprise Undichna traces are (1) single sinusoidal grooves, (2) paired sinusoidal grooves, (3) broad shallow grooves, (4) repeated arcuate imprints, (5) irregular grooves, (6) striated brush-like imprints. A distinct, repeated morphology is only produced by a constant activity of the tracemaker (generally a fish). Irregular activity (e.g. acceleration, sharp turns) or current action produces non-constant morphology, lacking the defining regularity of the ichnogenus Undichna. Such irregular forms can frequently be identified as a modified expression of a described ichnospecies, but morphologically do not fall within the definition of the ichnospecies. It is suggested that rather than create new names they should be referred to as 'cf. Undichna isp.' (irregular form).  相似文献

The most important archive of Earths climate change through geologic history is the sedimentary rock record. Rhythmic sedimentary alternations are usually interpreted as a consequence of periodic variations in the orbital parameters of the Earth. This interpretation enables the application of cyclostratigraphy as a very precise chronometer, when based on the assumption that orbital frequencies are faithfully recorded in the sedimentary archive. However, there are numerous uncertainties with the application of this concept. Particularly in carbonates, sediment properties such as mineralogical composition and fossil associations are severely altered during post-depositional alteration (diagenesis). We here point out that the assumption of a 1:1 recording of orbital signals in many cases is questionable for carbonate rhythmites. We use computer simulations to show the effect of diagenetic overprint on records of orbital signals in the carbonate record. Such orbital signals may be distorted in terms of frequency, amplitude, and phase by diagenetic processes, and cycles not present in the insolation record may emerge. This questions the routine use of carbonate rhythmites for chronostratigraphic dating.  相似文献

Tracks and trackways of the ruminant goat, Myotragus balearicus Bate, 1909 are abundant in the Late Pleistocene aeolianites of the south coast of Mallorca, Spain. The carbonate aeolianites form impressive dunes and related sand ramps that were initiated as echo dunes in front of a 20–40 m high paleocliff of Miocene reefal limestone. Where the dunes built up to the cliff top, they covered it as an aeolian ramp. The dunes and sand ramps were active during the dry summer months but were passive during the wet winter period. The small, goat-like animals were abundant on the island, and for unknown reasons crossed the aeolian accumulations in large numbers. This study deals with the tracks formed in the dune deposits. All preserved trackways indicate impression into moist sand. Special features of the tracks include the structure produced by the withdrawal of the foot, here called the ‘axis’, and a disturbance zone of plastic deformation around this. On dune crests, the disturbance zone surrounds the axis more or less symmetrically. However, in addition, a ‘pressure pad’ of dislocated, slightly rotated sediment bound by curved microfaults is commonly produced posterior to the axis by propulsive pressure of the foot. On steep stoss and lee slopes, the pressure pad becomes oriented in a down-slope position as a result of gravitational slip of the walking animal. Combination of disturbance of the sediment in this way by manus followed by overprinting of similar disturbance by pes produces highly complicated track structure. This structure may be characteristic of artiodactylous mammals in soft sand, particularly aeolian deposits. The structure is designated as Bifidipes aeolis isp. nov.  相似文献

A section in the Late Pleistocene Port Morant Formation of Jamaica shows a progradational deltaic succession passing from offshore muddy sands, through shoreface to foreshore deposits. The transition zone/lower shoreface has abundant Ophiomorpha burrows and contains common examples of the echinoid Leodia cf. sexiesperforata (Leske). Modern Leodia occur in shallow marine carbonate sands, and the Port Morant occurrence is the first record of abundant Leodia in the geological record. Despite their strong test construction that should give Leodia a high preservation potential, these echinoids have a poor fossil record because the environments in which they lived are rarely preserved. Consequently, the fossil record is biased towards species that occur in environments with high preservation potential.  相似文献

The record of life during the Proterozoic is preserved by several different lithologies, but two in particular are linked both spatially and temporally: chert and carbonate. These lithologies capture a snapshot of dominantly peritidal environments during the Proterozoic. Early diagenetic chert preserves some of the most exceptional Proterozoic biosignatures in the form of microbial body fossils and mat textures. This fossiliferous and kerogenous chert formed in shallow marine environments, where chert nodules, layers, and lenses are often surrounded by and encased within carbonate deposits that themselves often contain kerogen and evidence of former microbial mats. Here, we review the record of biosignatures preserved in peritidal Proterozoic chert and chert-hosting carbonate and discuss this record in the context of experimental and environmental studies that have begun to shed light on the roles that microbes and organic compounds may have played in the formation of these deposits. Insights gained from these studies suggest temporal trends in microbial-environmental interactions and place new constraints on past environmental conditions, such as the concentration of silica in Proterozoic seawater, interactions among organic compounds and cations in seawater, and the influence of microbial physiology and biochemistry on selective preservation by silicification.  相似文献

The oldest occurrences of the monothalamous foraminifer species Amphitremoida longa Nestell and Tolmacheva and A. laevis Nestell and Tolmacheva are found in the San Juan Formation together with conodonts of the Oepikodus evae Zone of the Floian (Lower Ordovician), in the Salagasta 2 section, southern Precordillera, Argentina. These discoveries represent the oldest record for foraminifers in South America. The foraminifers, species of which were originally described from the Lower Ordovician of northwestern Russia, are found in shallow high energy carbonate platform deposits in the Precordillera, together with a North Atlantic province conodont fauna. The carbonate sequence of the San Juan Formation in the Salagasta region is interpreted as a succession ranging from shallower tidal deposits to carbonate crinoidal shoaling bar deposits.  相似文献

The data of the comprehensive study of deposits of dune sand massifs—the Makhatta and Kysyl-Syr Tukulans—in the Vilyui River Basin (Central Yakutia) are given. We have revealed the structure and preliminarily reconstructed the evolution of tukulans in the Vilyui River basin and the environmental conditions of the surrounding area in the Late Pleistocene–Holocene period (the chronological period of the formation of tukulans) on the basis of lithological and palynological data and 17 radiocarbon datings. It has been revealed that the tukulans should be assigned to eolian deposits formed on sediments of complicated facial structure. We have distinguished four stages in the vegetation evolution within the last 40000-year period and three chronostratigraphical phases in the development of dune massifs.  相似文献
