Social wasps show an obvious evolution of the differentiation in behavior and external size between reproductive and non-reproductive females, with no clear differences in the Stenogastrinae, via overlap in the Polistinae, to clear differences in the Vespinae. In this study, we examined the morphological appearance of the spermatheca in representative species of these three subfamilies. The general anatomical organization of the spermatheca comprises a reservoir, a duct and two spermathecal glands, and is in line with its common structure in other social Hymenoptera. All examined wasp species have a spermathecal reservoir with uniform wall thickness, which is similar to the situation in the bees, but differentiates them from the ants. Within the wasps, the shape of the reservoir, the shape of the spermathecal glands and their attachment site to the spermatheca differs among the Stenogastrinae, Polistinae and Vespinae. The reservoir wall is thick in the Polistinae and Vespinae, while in the Stenogastrinae, it varies from thin in Parischnogaster to thick in Eustenogaster, with an intermediate situation in Liostenogaster. In all examined species, we found no differences in the spermathecal development between reproductive and non-reproductive wasps.  相似文献

Exocrine glands are involved in several wasp colony activities; however, the number of known glands in the Vespidae is rather low when compared to other social insect groups. The aim of this study is to survey the head of Neotropical social wasps and to provide a detailed comparative study of the glands found in the Polistinae. A total of 33 species distributed over 13 genera were studied with serial histological sections of the head, excluding the labiomaxillary complex. Additionally, the exoskeleton was explored using scanning electron microscopy looking for associated modifications. A total of eleven exocrine glands were observed, five are structures recorded for the first time for the Hymenoptera, three are new records for the Polistinae and three are previously known organs. The glands studied are: ocellar gland I, ocellar gland II, periocular gland, subantennal gland, hypopharyngeal gland, clypeal gland, posterobasal genal gland, ectal mandibular gland, mesal mandibular gland, intramandibular gland I, and intramandibular gland II. The widespread distribution of most of these glands suggests an origin prior to the evolution of the Polistinae. Our results highlight the importance of detailed morphological studies to unveil the significance of chemical communication in one of the most characteristic groups of social animals.  相似文献

Sequence data of mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA (mt-rDNA) and nuclear 28S ribosomal DNA (nuc-rDNA) were compared in two honeybee species (Apis mellifera and Apis dorsata) and a selection of 22 wasp species (Vespidae) with different levels of sociality. The averge substitution rates in mt-rDNA and nuc-rDNA were almost-equal in solitary species. In species with larger nests, however, the difference between the nuclear and the mitochondrial substitution rate significantly increased. The average substitution ratio, ψ (nucleotide substitutions in mt-rDNA/nucleotide substitutions in nuc-rDNA) was 1.48 ± 0.12 (SE) among the solitary Eumeninae, 3.70 ± 0.15 among five primitive social Stenogastrinae species, 3.24 ± 0.20 among five Polistinae species, 5.76 ± 0.33 among nine highly eusocial Vespinae, and 12.7 in the two Apis species. The high egg-laying rate and the effective population size skew between the sexes may contribute to the rise of the substitution ratio in the highly eusocial species. Drift and bottleneck effects in the mitochondrial DNA pool during speciation events as well as polyandry may further enhance this phenomenon. The Neotropical Polistinae wasps are diverse in taxonomy, social behavior, and nesting founding characteristics. Although some species in this group have been used as models for studies on wasp’s biology, they are poorly known in terms of cytogenetics. Here we reported an intraspecific numerical-structural chromosome variation in the swarm-founding wasp Metapolybia decorata from the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest using conventional and molecular cytogenetic techniques. The observed structural chromosome change involved a telomeric fusion that resulted in a chromosome number range of 2n = 34–36. The origin and geographic distribution of the variant chromosome forms as well as their frequency and maintenance in the studied populations are discussed. In addition, we reported a novel and geographically restricted deletion in the fused chromosomes indicating that the species is undergoing a continued process of karyotype evolution leading to fused chromosome stabilization by elimination of inactive centromeric sequences. Evidence of differences in the telomeric sequences of this wasp was also found by in situ hybridization using the motif (T2AG2)7 as probe.  相似文献

In the Brazilian savanna many plant species bear regular associations with patrolling ants that are aggressive towards insect herbivores. However, not only ants but also several species of predatory wasps are attracted to plants due to the extrafloral nectaries (EFNs). Such wasps feed on both herbivores and plant exudates. In this study we describe the foraging behavior of the social Polistinae wasp Brachygastra lecheguana in the extrafloral nectaried shrub Banisteriopsis malifolia, and investigated the influence of patrolling ants Camponotus blandus on the activity of the wasp. Brachygastra lecheguana fed on the endophytic larvae of Anthonomus (Curculionidae) beetles that developed inside flower buds. The wasp lacerated the bud layers to reach the beetle larvae located at the bud core. The wasp visits to Ba. malifolia were statistically related to the abundance of flower buds and beetles. Ant exclusion experiments revealed that the hunting behavior of B. lecheguana on beetles was not related to the absence of C. blandus. However we found that wasps spent more time consuming extrafloral nectar on branches where ants were excluded. This is the first study reporting extrafloral nectar consumption by B. lecheguana, as well as the predation on herbivores in natural areas. In cerrado vegetation, ants benefit the plant by reducing insect herbivores, and our study provides evidence that the B. lecheguana – Ba. malifolia system represents a potential interaction where the wasp may also benefit the host plant. The value of this wasp species as a plant‐guard is discussed.  相似文献

采用多个指数对西双版纳地区聚果榕榕果小蜂的种群分布格局进行了检测,并重点运用基于方差/均值比率法的t值测度比较了其生境和季节差异.结果表明,6种聚果榕榕果小蜂的种群分布格局皆呈聚集分布;传粉小蜂聚集强度在生境序列上,原始雨林≈严重干扰地段中度干扰地段,在季节序列上,雨季>干热季>雾凉季;非传粉小蜂不同种类不同性别随着生境和季节变化皆表现出明显的聚集强度差异.对各种聚集强度变化的发生机理与其对聚果榕传粉者互惠共生体进化稳定性进行了讨论,认为保护榕树、保护榕树和传粉昆虫互惠共生体的重点应放在保护其原始森林生境方面.  相似文献

利用PCR-RFLP技术鉴定传粉榕小蜂隐种混合样品的物种组成   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
隐种(cryptic species)是指形态上几乎完全相同但遗传组成存在显著分化的物种。在榕树–榕小蜂一对一共生系统中, 传粉榕小蜂隐种的发现对协同进化、物种共存等重要的生态和进化理论提出了严峻的挑战。因为很难从形态上直接区分隐种, 所以, 相关研究中的一个迫切需要解决的问题就是如何快速而准确地鉴定隐种。本文采用PCR-RFLP方法分析了mtDNACOI基因片段, 对木瓜榕(Ficus auriculata)和鸡嗉果榕(F. semicordata)的传粉榕小蜂隐种进行了区分。结果表明为木瓜榕传粉的大果榕小蜂(Ceratosolen emarginatus)存在两个隐种(A和B), 分别包含1个XhoI和1个BssSI酶切位点。将两个隐种的样品按不同比例混合, 提取基因组DNA, PCR扩增mtDNA COI片段, 经XhoI和BssSI分别酶切, 均能通过酶切图谱准确检测出混合样品的隐种组成。鸡嗉果榕小蜂(C. gravelyi)两个隐种的mtDNA COI基因序列也存在较大差别, 分别包含1个BmrI和1个AvaI酶切位点, 隐种混合样品经BmrI和AvaI分别酶切的结果也能准确鉴定混合样品的物种组成。我们的结果表明基于PCR和DNA酶切技术能快速而准确地区分传粉榕小蜂的隐种。  相似文献

群落中的物种相互作用构成了复杂的生态网络。有关物种的数量和组成的季节性动态变化已有较多的研究, 但是对于生态网络的动态变化知之甚少。揭示生态网络的动态变化对于理解群落的稳定性以及群落的动态变化过程和机理具有重要意义。本研究以垂叶榕(Ficus benjamina)榕小蜂群落为研究对象, 分别在西双版纳的干季和雨季采集了榕小蜂的种类和数量信息。比较了两个季节榕小蜂群落的动态变化以及共存网络的参数(例如网路直径、连接数、嵌套性和群落矩阵温度)变化。结果显示: 雨季榕果内传粉榕小蜂Eupristina koningsbergeri所占比例高于干季, 传粉榕小蜂的种群数量也高于干季, 而在干季非传粉榕小蜂的种类增加(干季15种小蜂, 雨季14种)。从榕树-传粉榕小蜂互利共生系统的适合度来看, 干季非传粉小蜂的增加对传粉榕小蜂和榕树的适合度是不利的。在干季, 共存网络物种间的连接数(干季0.95, 雨季0.47)多于雨季, 群落矩阵温度(干季23.24, 雨季2.64)也显著高于雨季。表明干季榕小蜂群落组成及种间关系较雨季更为复杂而多样, 高的矩阵温度暗示群落受到的干扰更大。  相似文献

Nest orientation in social insects has been intensively studied in warmer and cooler climates, particularly in the northern hemisphere. Previous studies have consistently shown that species subjected to these climatic conditions prefer to select mostly southern locations where the nests can gain direct sunlight. However, very little is known on nest orientation in tropical and subtropical social insects. We studied nest orientations initiated by swarms throughout a year in a Brazilian swarm-founding wasp, Polybia paulista von Ihering (Hymenoptera: Polistinae). Swarms selected various orientations as nest sites, but there was a particular trend in that swarms in the winter period (May–August) preferred to build northward-facing nests. This preference is opposite from that of social wasps observed in the northern hemisphere. Colonies of this species can potentially last for many years with continuous nesting, but nesting activities of colonies during the winter are severely limited due to cool temperature and a shortened day length. Northward-facing nests are warmer through the gain of direct solar heat during the winter period; consequently, choosing northward-facing sites may be advantageous for swarms in terms of a shortened brood development and shortened time needed to increase metabolic rates during warm-up for flight.  相似文献

全球已知有约800种榕属(Ficus)植物, 主要分布在热带, 部分种类延伸至亚热带地区。温度是限制榕‒蜂共生系统分布北界的主要因素, 也显著影响榕树及其榕小蜂的繁殖成功, 其中榕小蜂对温度的响应更加敏感。榕小蜂只有在一定的温度范围内才能保持正常的生理机能, 其对温度耐受能力直接影响榕果内小蜂种群数量和群落内种间关系。然而目前对榕小蜂温度耐受性的研究尚少, 榕小蜂的温度耐受能力如何影响榕果内小蜂的共存关系还未见报道。本文研究了分布于西双版纳的2种雌雄同株和1种雌雄异株榕树果内传粉榕小蜂和非传粉小蜂的温度耐受能力。结果表明: 3种传粉榕小蜂对高温的耐受性极差, 相对于雌雄同株的高榕(F. altissima)和聚果榕(F. racemosa)传粉榕小蜂, 雌雄异株的鸡嗉子榕(F. semicordata)传粉榕小蜂对低温有增强的耐受趋势。聚果榕小蜂群落结构显示: 在适宜其生长的西双版纳地区, 传粉榕小蜂的数量占绝对优势, 在温度较低的季节其数量显著减少; 而非传粉榕小蜂呈相反模式, 较强的温度耐受能力使其在低温的雾凉季维持了较高的种群数量。鸡嗉子榕果内非传粉小蜂Sycoscapter trifemmensis相对于Philotrypesis dunia有更强的温度耐受能力, 在种群数量和种间关系上有更多的竞争优势及数量。榕小蜂的温度耐受性差异在物种分布、种间关系的维持和共存上起了重要作用, 本研究结果为阐明榕小蜂种间共存的维持机制提供了科学依据。  相似文献

Surveying the diversity of stinging wasps (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) provides an important information base to assist in biodiversity conservation and the management of forest reserves, as wasps depend on and maintain the population balance of several other groups of insects. In accordance, this paper presents an altitudinal survey of wasps (Hymenoptera, Aculeata, Vespidae) in Itatiaia National Park, Brazil, which is a protected area covered by Atlantic Forest in a mountainous landscape, with altitudes ranging between 540 and 2791 metres above sea level. Six altitudinal zones were sampled with entomological net, and the abundance and diversity of the species were indicated by zones. Field sampling took 288 h of discontinuous activity, which was randomly conducted from December 2012 to December 2013. A total of 398 individuals belonging to 29 species and two subfamilies (Eumeninae and Polistinae) were sampled. Eight species are new records for the state of Rio de Janeiro. We found a monotonic decrease in wasp diversity in relation to altitude, and the number of captured individuals differed significantly between the low and high altitudes.  相似文献

A major question in current network science is how to understand the relationship between structure and functioning of real networks. Here we present a comparative network analysis of 48 wasp and 36 human social networks. We have compared the centralisation and small world character of these interaction networks and have studied how these properties change over time. We compared the interaction networks of (1) two congeneric wasp species (Ropalidia marginata and Ropalidia cyathiformis), (2) the queen-right (with the queen) and queen-less (without the queen) networks of wasps, (3) the four network types obtained by combining (1) and (2) above, and (4) wasp networks with the social networks of children in 36 classrooms. We have found perfect (100%) centralisation in a queen-less wasp colony and nearly perfect centralisation in several other queen-less wasp colonies. Note that the perfectly centralised interaction network is quite unique in the literature of real-world networks. Differences between the interaction networks of the two wasp species are smaller than differences between the networks describing their different colony conditions. Also, the differences between different colony conditions are larger than the differences between wasp and children networks. For example, the structure of queen-right R. marginata colonies is more similar to children social networks than to that of their queen-less colonies. We conclude that network architecture depends more on the functioning of the particular community than on taxonomic differences (either between two wasp species or between wasps and humans).  相似文献

Tropical ecosystems are biodiverse and ecologically complex, supporting nearly half of the global herpetofauna. Ecological interactions play a role in the maintenance of species diversity with a range of ecological interactions occurring within and among species in tropical ecosystems. Incidental observations of ecological interactions provide an important contribution to the understanding of the ecology and natural history of species. Here, we report an interspecific interaction between distant taxa, the Four-Clawed Gecko (Gehyra mutilata) utilizing an active communal nesting site and shared nesting resources with two vespid wasp species (Eumeninae and Polistinae), where previous observations documented species utilizing abandoned nesting resources. This is the first known record of three species actively cohabitating in a shared nesting resource. This observation, with one or all species positively benefiting from the ecological interaction, likely indicates a mutualistic or commensal ecological interaction. Incidental observations such as the present study are likely to reveal that interspecific ecological interactions including communal nesting are more widespread than previously thought and the co-utilization of existing nesting resources presents an advantage for taxa. Observations such as these provide the basis for understanding the complex network of ecological interactions occurring in tropical rainforests.  相似文献

In French Guiana, the arboreal nests of the swarm-founding social wasp Protopolybia emortualis (Polistinae) are generally found near those of the arboreal dolichoderine ant Dolichoderus bidens. These wasp nests are typically protected by an envelope, which in turn is covered by an additional carton ‘shelter’ with structure resembling the D. bidens nests. A few wasps constantly guard their nest to keep D. bidens workers from approaching. When alarmed by a strong disturbance, the ants invade the host tree foliage whereas the wasps retreat into their nest. Notably, there is no chemical convergence in the cuticular profiles of the wasps and ants sharing a tree. The aggressiveness of D. bidens likely protects the wasps from army ant raids, but the ants do not benefit from the presence of the wasps; therefore, this relationship corresponds to a kind of commensalism.  相似文献

Abstract

More than 50 000 social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) were collected between March and August 1987 from throughout New Zealand. The most widespread species is the German wasp (Vespula germanica). The common wasp (V. vulgaris) has colonised about half the country and appears to be still spreading. It tends to appear in urban areas first, presumably because it is transported there with people and/or their belongings. The Asian paper wasp (Polistes chinensis) and Australian paper wasp (P. humilis), are confined to the northern half of the North Island, but the former species is spreading south.  相似文献

连续4年采用人工定期释放棉铃虫卵、幼虫和定期回收法,研究了不同棉花品种与棉铃虫卵期、幼虫期寄生蜂种群数量变化的关系.通过对卵、幼虫寄生率反正弦转换后进行方差分析表明,无论是在棉铃虫卵期还是在其幼虫期,转基因棉田中棉铃虫卵和幼虫的被寄生率始终显著低于其亲本对照棉.运用“Y”型嗅觉仪测定转基因棉及其亲本对照棉对棉铃虫幼虫寄生蜂———中红侧沟茧蜂的选择性行为反应,用成对数据进行方差分析,并进行了“T”测验.结果表明,转基因棉对棉铃虫寄生蜂有较强的忌避反应,且取食转基因棉的棉铃虫幼虫与被害转基因棉两者的共同组合与单独被害棉之间对寄生蜂的忌避效应基本一致.  相似文献

These studies have generally been conducted within species, because a resolved phylogeny among species is lacking. We used nuclear DNA microsatellite flanking sequences, mitochondrial COI sequence, and morphological characters to generate a phylogeny for the Polistinae (Hymenoptera) using 69 species.  相似文献

A gall wasp, Aulacidea subterminalis, was released into the field in New Zealand in 1999 for biocontrol of the grassland weed Hieracium pilosella. To predict its likely impact in the field, the effect of the gall wasp on plant growth was measured under stress-free conditions in a shade house trial with potted plants. Plants with galls showed a reduction in stolon length of 75%. They had slightly lower total dry matter and reduced root weight. In a glasshouse experiment to measure the impact of water stress, nutrient stress, and plant competition on growth of H. pilosella and performance of the gall wasp, the number and mean diameter of gall clusters were not significantly different between treatment and control plants. However, galled plants produced more, but shorter, stolons in all stress treatments, and stolons that were more branched in nutrient- and water-stressed plants, than ungalled plants. Under the plant competition treatment, total stolon length relative to biomass was greater with, than without, wasps, indicating that stolons were thinner. Galling by A. subterminalis is likely to reduce vegetative reproduction of H. pilosella whether or not the plants are stressed, indicating that the wasp may be a successful biocontrol agent.  相似文献

杂交是生物进化的重要方式和新物种的重要来源, 在植物界普遍存在, 但在不同植物类群中的发生率差异很大。高度专性传粉体系中, 宿主植物和传粉者经历长期协同进化, 形成远高于其他物种的互利共生机制和合子前生殖壁垒, 被认为不太可能发生种间杂交。榕树和传粉榕小蜂是动植物间专性传粉关系的典范, 甚至发展出一对一高度专性关系。但随着研究的深入, 发现了一定程度的宿主转移现象, 引发学者对榕树种间杂交的研究和探讨。本文从人工杂交、外来种和本地种杂交、岛屿种自然杂交、同域分布近缘种自然杂交, 以及利用系统发育不一致推测杂交等5个方面, 综述了榕树种间杂交的研究进展, 并对未来研究进行展望。同一亚属内人工榕树种间杂交F1代一般可育, 不同亚属榕树的种间杂交亲和性强度在不同性系统上表现有所不同。种间存在单向或不对称的双向基因流, 依赖专性传粉榕小蜂传粉可能使得渐渗杂交成为榕树种间杂交的主要方式。一系列的合子前隔离机制, 包括化学隔离、形态隔离、地理隔离、生态隔离、季节隔离等有效维持了榕树物种在遗传和形态上的完整性; 而合子后隔离作用较弱, 传粉榕小蜂在非专性宿主上的繁殖适合度一般表现为显著降低。未来有待在评估杂交对榕树生物多样性和榕-传粉榕小蜂共生体系稳定性的影响, 分析榕树天然杂交带的杂交模式, 以及探讨影响宿主转移和榕树杂交的因素等方面开展深入研究。  相似文献
