Several studies suggest that the circadian systems of diurnal mammals respond differently to daytime light than those of nocturnal mammals. We hypothesized that the photosensitive “clock” gene Per1 would respond to light exposure during subjective day in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the diurnal rodent, Octodon degus. Tissue was collected 1.5–2?h after a 30?min light pulse presented at five timepoints across the 24?h day and compared to controls maintained under conditions of constant darkness. Per1 mRNA was quantified using in situ hybridization. Results showed that the rhythmicity and photic responsiveness of Per1 in the degu resembles that of nocturnal animals. Daily rhythms in different biochemical and hematological variables have been widely described in either diurnal or nocturnal species, but so far no studies in the rhythms of these variables have been conducted in a dual-phasing species such as the degus. The Octodon degus is a rodent that has the ability to switch from diurnal to nocturnal activity under laboratory conditions in response to wheel-running availability. This species may help us discover whether a complete temporal order inversion occurs parallel to the inversion that has been observed in this rodent's activity pattern. The aim of the present study is to determine the phase relationships among 26 variables, including behavioral, physiological, biochemical, and hematological variables, during the day and at night, in diurnal and nocturnal degus chronotypes induced under controlled laboratory conditions through the availability of wheel running. A total of 39 male degus were individually housed under a 12:12 light-dark (LD) cycle, with free wheel-running access. Wheel-running activity (WRA) and body temperature (Tb) rhythms were recorded throughout the experiment. Melatonin, hematological, and biochemical variables were determined by means of blood samples obtained every 6?h (ZT1, ZT7, ZT13, and ZT19). In spite of great differences in WRA and Tb rhythms between nocturnal and diurnal degus, no such differences were observed in the temporal patterns of most of the biological variables analyzed for the two chronotypes. Variation was only found in plasma urea level and lymphocyte number. A slight delay in the phase of the melatonin rhythm was also observed. This study shows the internal temporal order of a dual-phasing mammal does not show a complete inversion in accordance with its activity and body temperature pattern; it would appear that the switching mechanism involved in the degu's nocturnalism is located downstream from the pacemaker. Infrared radiation (750–1500 mµ) produces no iris contraction in the typically nocturnal long-eared owl even when the energy content is millions of times greater than that of green light which easily elicits a pupil change. The energies in different parts of the visible spectrum required for a minimal iris response yield a spectral visibility curve for the owl which is the same as the human visibility curve at low light intensities. Functionally, the owl''s vision thus corresponds to the predominantly rod structure of its retina, and the idea that nocturnal owls have a special type of vision sensitive to infrared radiation for seeing in the woods at night is erroneous.  相似文献

Everted sacs of intestine from golden hamsters were incubated at 37°C for at least 1 hour in vitro with emulsified lipid after removal of both pancreatic lipase and bile salts. The fine structure of intestinal epithelium is well preserved under these conditions. Absorption of fat by the intestinal mucosa in vitro closely resembles lipid absorption in vivo, as observed by both light and electron microscopy. The physiological significance of these observations is discussed. Tubular elements of the agranular endoplasmic reticulum are often strikingly abundant in the apical cytoplasm of intestinal absorptive cells. These have a role in the intracellular transport of fat since they frequently contain droplets of lipid derived from the incubation medium. The rate of fat accumulation in the epithelium appears to be proportional to the concentration in the medium.  相似文献

The amount of protocatechuic acid glucoside in the left colleterial gland changes with the reproductive cycle. Allatectomy, beheading and injection of actinomycin D cause inhibition of the accumulation of glucoside, but glucoside resumes to accumulate in the left colleterial gland with the reimplantation of corpora allata into the allatectomized cockroaches.
When 14C-glucose was injected in normal animals, radioactive glucoside was accumulated in the left colleterial gland whereas in the allatectomized cockroaches, it was not accumulated in the gland but was found abundantly in blood.
The level of protocatechuic acid glucoside synthetase activity of the fat body tissue and of the left colleterial gland was assayed. The enzyme activity in the left colleterial gland was not affected by allatectomy but that in the fat body was slightly affected.
The mechanism of accumulation of protocatechuic acid glucoside in the left colleterial gland and the endocrine control on the accumulation are discussed.  相似文献

Willow Warblers Phylloscopus trochilus at Wytham, Oxford (51° 46' N., 1° 15' W.), start to sing around sunrise, in late April to early June. In the continuous daylight at Neiden, East Finnmark (69° 42' N., 29° 25' E.), they do not sing all the time, but in late June to late July start singing between 22.45 and 01.45 hrs., the start becoming progressively later as the season draws on. At Neiden, nest visits start some time after song (01.00–02.30), and this is probably also true at Wytham.
The influence of environmental variables on the starts of the two cycles is discussed. It is concluded that song starts at Wytham when light intensity has risen above a certain threshold level, and at Neiden, when it has reached a minimum value or has started to rise again. It is suggested that the Neiden birds react to the closest approximation of their light intensity cycle to that at dawn further south. The end of daily song at Neiden may be controlled by internal factors. It is suggested that the start of the Neiden nest-visit cycle is controlled by light intensity, but modified by temperature effects. The possibility that the environment affects the bird indirectly, via its brood or food, can be ruled out. The functional significance of the retention of activity lulls in the continuous daylight of the Arctic summer is discussed.
The daily song-starts of the Garden Warbler Sylvia borin , Brambling Fringilla montifringilla , and Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella , follow the same pattern as those of the Willow Warbler. The Redwing Turdus musicus often has no daily song lull; its nest-visit lull begins and ends well before midnight. The significance of this is discussed.  相似文献

The distribution of six species of birds within a beech wood was analysed in two winters when beech seeds were abundant. All species were concentrated in patches where seed density was high in one winter, but only two showed a similar distribution in the second winter. The distribution of the other four species, three tits Parus spp. and the Nuthatch Sitta europaea, was positively correlated with low cover. Cover was inversely correlated with seed density. Bird predators were recorded many times during the second winter but not at all during the first winter. It is suggested that predator avoidance was more important than food density for some species in the second winter. The relationships between bird density and both food and cover were sigmoid in shape. The proportion of the seed crop consumed by the birds was estimated at about 4.5%, which was probably more than the amount consumed by mammals. The Woodpigeon Columba palumbus (which took 44% of the total seeds consumed by birds) and the Brambling Fringilla montifringilla (33%) were the most important seed consumers among the birds.  相似文献

 分析了我国河北省野生大豆天然种群几个重要数量性状的群体结构特征及其地理生态分布。结果显示:平均种群内变异系数大小顺序依次为:百粒重(46%)>脂肪含量(17%)>开花期(10.3%)>蛋白质含量(4.7%)。种群平均开花期与纬度有相关性,而百粒重、脂肪和蛋白质含量分布与纬度没有相关,与种群的生态和遗传背景有关。种群内每个数量性状分布都存在一个优势区段。种群内数量性状存在因基因频率积累程度的不同而导致表型差异较大的遗传型个体。虽然同一个居群长期受到相同光周期诱导,但是种群不是有单一相近的开花期,存在着开花光周期反应不同的基因型。地理种群结构相似性分析表明:河北省天然野生大豆种群结构相似性与地理生态有密切相关性,存在地理生态群。  相似文献

Nocturnal geckos are active at body temperatures 10–35°C below the thermal optima for maximum rate of aerobic metabolism of diurnal lizards. Therefore, given ancestral (diurnal) lizard physiology, nocturnality causes a substantial thermal handicap in locomotor performance. In prior studies, we hypothesized that a low minimum cost of locomotion (Cmin) in geckos was an adaptation that increased locomotor endurance capacity at low, nocturnal temperatures. However, Cmin is only part of an integrated system that, in conjunction with the maximum rate of oxygen consumption, sets the maximum speed that can be sustained aerobically (termed the maximum aerobic speed or MAS). We conducted the first phylogenetic analysis of MAS and lizards and found that the greatest changes in MAS, Cmin and (at activity temperatures) in the evolutionary history of lizards all coincided with the evolution of nocturnality in geckos. Geckos active at 15–25°C did not become optimized for nocturnal temperatures, or fully offset the thermal effects of nocturnality by evolving maximal rates of oxygen consumption comparable to diurnal lizards active at 35°C. Geckos did evolve MAS twice that of diurnal lizards running at low temperatures by evolving a remarkably low Cmin. Allometric analysis and phylogenetically independent contrasts of , Cmin, and MAS indicate a 72% evolutionary decrease in , (at activity temperatures) and a 50% evolutionary decrease in Cmin concordant with the evolution of nocturnality in geckos. Experimental measurements show that decreased Cmin in six species of gecko increased MAS by 50–120% compared to diurnal lizards at low temperatures. Thus, geckos sufficiently overcame the near paralyzing effects of nocturnal temperatures, but only offset about 50% of the decrease in MAS resulting from the low maximum rate of oxygen consumption. Although the nocturnal environment remains severely suboptimal, the evolution of a low cost of locomotion in the ancestor of geckos was highly adaptive for nocturnality. We also present a generalized approach to ecophysiological evolution that integrates phylogeny with the causal relationships among environment, physiology, and performance capacity. With respect to a clade, two hypotheses are central to our integrative approach: (1) a change of an environmental variable (e.g., temperature) causes a performance handicap; and (2) evolution of a physiological variable (e.g., minimum cost of locomotion [Cmin]) increases performance in the derived environment. To test the hypothesis that evolution of a physiological variable is adaptive in nature, we suggest determining if individuals in nature perform at levels exceeding the performance capacity of their hypothetical ancestors and if this additional performance capacity is due to the evolution of the physiological variable in question.  相似文献

高粱抗旱品种“3197 B”比不抗旱品种“三尺三”在同样渗透胁迫条件下,要累积更多的游离脯氨酸。未受渗透胁迫前,两品种地上部的总氨基氮和游离氨基氮水平相似。氨基酸组成也相同。六种主要氨基酸分别占总的量和游离氨基酸量的50%和65%左右。受渗透胁迫24h后,总氨基氮水平未变,游离氨基氮增加,两品种的变化相似。因而,品种间脯氨酸累积的差异,似乎不因蛋白质或游离氨基酸的氨基酸组分的不同和蛋白质水解或合成受促进或抑制程度的不同而异。受渗透胁迫后,3197B植株内不但脯氨酸绝对量,而且相对量都超过“三尺三”。脯氨酸合成的潜在能力在3197B和“三尺三”之间有差别。  相似文献

Circadian rhythms in behavior and physiology are very different in diurnal and nocturnal rodents. A pacemaker located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus is responsible for generating and maintaining circadian rhythms in mammals, and cellular and molecular rhythms within the SCN of diurnal and nocturnal rodents are very similar. The neural substrates determining whether an animal has a diurnal or nocturnal phase preference are thus likely to reside downstream of the SCN. The ventral subparaventricular zone (vSPVZ), a major target of the SCN that is important for the expression of circadian rhythmicity in nocturnal lab rats (Rattus norvegicus), exhibits different rhythms in cFos expression in diurnal Nile grass rats compared to lab rats. We examined the effects of chemotoxic lesions of the cFos-expressing cells of the vSPVZ on activity rhythms of grass rats to evaluate the hypothesis that these cells support diurnality in this species. Male grass rats housed in a 12:12 light:dark (LD) cycle were given bilateral injections of the neurotoxin n-methyl-D-L-aspartic acid (NMA) or vehicle aimed at the vSPVZ; cells in the SCN are resistant to NMA, which kills neurons in other brain regions, but leaves fibers of passage intact. vSPVZ-damaged grass rats exhibited highly unstable patterns of activity in constant darkness (DD) and in the LD cycle that followed. However, crepuscular bouts of activity could be seen in all animals with vSPVZ lesions. Damage to the vSPVZ reduced cFos expression in this area but not in the SCN. Using correlational analyses, we found that the number of cFos-ir cells in the vSPVZ was unrelated to several parameters of the activity rhythms during the initial post-surgical period, when animals were in LD. However, the number of cells expressing cFos in the vSPVZ was positively correlated with general activity during the subjective day relative to the subjective night when the animals were switched to DD, and this pattern persisted when a LD cycle was reinstated. Also, the number of cFos-ir cells in the vSPVZ was negatively correlated with the strength of rhythmicity in DD and the number of days required to re-entrain to a LD cycle following several weeks in DD. These data suggest that the vSPVZ emits signals important for the expression of stable diurnal activity patterns in grass rats, and that species differences in these signals may contribute to differences in behavioral and physiological rhythms of diurnal and nocturnal mammals. 本研究应用放射免疫技术定量测定了小鼠脑、脂肪、肝、肌肉组织及血浆肥胖蛋白[OP-(57-92)]的含量。结果显示:小鼠脑组织OP含量最高,为13.14±0.8pg/mg;脂肪组织中OP含量为2.99±0.54pg/mgl肝脏及肌肉组织中则未检测出OP。雌性小鼠脂肪组织中OP含量明显低于雄性(1.97±0.28vs4.02±0.92pg/mg)。小鼠的血浆中OP含量为2257.8±171.9pg/ml。  相似文献

Summary The migratory restlessness was studied in caged Bramblings in northern Sweden under natural light conditions 17 September 1977 to 25 May 1978. The experimental birds showed a well-developed migratory restlessness during the natural migratory season of the free-living conspecifics. The migratory restlessness lasted longer than the natural migratory period in autumn, and the onset of migratory restlessness in spring was delayed compared with the natural migratory period. The discrepancies are probably due to the abnormal photoperiodic conditions to which the experimental birds were exposed. Different diurnal activity patterns during different times of the year reflect the migratory habit of the species, i.e. the Brambling is both a nocturnal and diurnal migrant. The quantity of the diurnal activity per hour was clearly positively correlated with the length of photoperiod. The photoperiodic and endogenous influence on the migration of the Brambling is discussed.
Zugunruhe bei gekäfigten Bergfinken in Nordschweden
Zusammenfassung Die Zugunruhe gekäfigter Bergfinken wurde vom 17. Sept. 1977 bis 15. Mai 1978 unter natürlichen Lichtbedingungen in Nordschweden untersucht. Während der Zugperiode freilebender Bergfinken zeigten die gekäfigten Individuen deutliche Zugunruhe. Im Herbst dauerte die Periode der Zugunruhe länger als die Zugperiode freilebender Bergfinken, im Frühjahr war das Einsetzen der Zugunruhe gegenüber dem natürlichen Zugbeginn verzögert. Möglicherweise waren diese Unterschiede eine Folge der abnormen photoperiodischen Bedingungen, unter denen die Käfigvögel lebten. Unterschiedliche Muster der Tagesaktivität in den einzelnen Jahreszeiten deuten das Zugverhalten der Art an: Bergfinken sind sowohl Nacht- als auch Tagzieher. Die Menge der Tagesaktivität pro Stunde war deutlich positiv mit der Länge der Photoperiode korreliert. Der photoperiodische und endogene Einfluß auf das Zugverhalten des Bergfinken wird diskutiert.

The present publication summarizes the methodological possibilities of tracking radar and describes some features of nocturnal migration at two sites in the Negev, which include anwers to basic questions of bird migration. The directions of spring and autumn migration were practically opposite; only the headings in spring indicated some more compensation for stronger westerly winds. The volume of nocturnal spring migration was only about 65% of autumn migration, which may be an indication of mortality outside tie breeding area. Highest densities of migration at the two radar sites in the Negev Highlands (450 m above sea level) and in the Arava Valley (150 m below sea level) indicated flightlevels adjusted to atmospheric conditions aloft, and not to round level. Due to the trade-wind system, the birds heading southward in autumn flew mainly below flew mainly above 1500 m above sea level, while in spring they tended to make use of the anti-trades at higher altitudes. The decisive factor for altitude choice was the speed of tailwind in spring and autumn; other factors, such as temperature, humidity and pressure had no significant influence on the altitude distributions. With respect to the question of non-stop or intermittent flight across large desert areas, the data show that between the eastern deserts of Egypt and the Sinai/Negev complex the nocturnal migrants maintained their schedule of nocturnal flight and diurnal rest. A few exceptions of nocturnal migrants continuing migration at high altitudes into the day were identified mainly as heron- and gull-type birds. The proportion of waders and waterfowl identified by wing-beat pattern in nocturnal migration is nearly the same at both sites, indicating broad-front migration across the desert. The numbers of birds with continuous wingbeats is, however, so large compared to available estimates of waders and waterfowl wintering in Africa that careful reconsideration of the underlying assumptions in the radar and field estimates is necessary.  相似文献

Obesity is strongly associated with hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance, both primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes. It has been thought that increased fasting free fatty acids (FFA) may be responsible for the development of insulin resistance during obesity, causing an increase in plasma glucose levels, which would then signal for compensatory hyperinsulinemia. But when obesity is induced by fat feeding in the dog model, there is development of insulin resistance and a marked increase in fasting insulin despite constant fasting FFA and glucose. We examined the 24-h plasma profiles of FFA, glucose, and other hormones to observe any potential longitudinal postprandial or nocturnal alterations that could lead to both insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia induced by a high-fat diet in eight normal dogs. We found that after 6 wk of a high-fat, hypercaloric diet, there was development of significant insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia as well as accumulation of both subcutaneous and visceral fat without a change in either fasting glucose or postprandial glucose. Moreover, although there was no change in fasting FFA, there was a highly significant increase in the nocturnal levels of FFA that occurred as a result of fat feeding. Thus enhanced nocturnal FFA, but not glucose, may be responsible for development of insulin resistance and fasting hyperinsulinemia in the fat-fed dog model.  相似文献

There are two main processes involved in the expression of circadian rhythmicity: entrainment and masking. Whereas the first operates via the central pacemaker to anticipate predictable environmental conditions, masking (mainly induced by light) functions as a direct modulator of the circadian output signal induced by nonpredictable events. The Chilean rodent Octodon degus presents both diurnal and nocturnal chronotypes when given free access to an exercise wheel. Two steady-entrainment phases and graded masking by light seem to generate the wide variability of chronotypes in this species. The aim of this study was to characterize the differential masking by light according to the individual chronotypes, their stability over time, and the influence of wheel running availability and ambient temperature upon the degus' nocturnality. To this end, diurnal and nocturnal degus were subjected to ultradian cycles (1:1-h light-dark [LD]), with and without wheel running availability, and under both normal and high diurnal ambient temperature cycles. The present results show that diurnal and nocturnal degus present a stable masking by light, each according to its respective chronotype. Thus, whereas diurnal animals increased their activity with light, in nocturnal degus light induced a sharp drop in wheel running activity. These two types of masking responses appeared not only when the animals were synchronized to the 12:12-h LD cycle, but also under ultradian cycles. Different masking effects persisted when wheel running was made unavailable and when the animals shifted their circadian activity patterns in response to ultradian cycles or to diurnal exposure to high temperatures. In conclusion, our results show that the positive and negative masking effects of light on diurnal and nocturnal degus, respectively, seem to occur independently of relative phase control by the central pacemaker or the negative masking induced by high environmental temperatures. Many mammals display predictable daily rhythmicity in both neuroendocrine function and behavior. The basic rest-activity cycles are usually consistent for a given species and vary from night-active (nocturnal), those mostly active at dawn and dusk (i.e., crepuscular), and to day-active (diurnal) species. A number of daily rhythms are oppositely phased with respect to the light/dark (LD) cycle in diurnal compared with nocturnal mammals, whereas others are equally phased with respect to the LD cycle, regardless of diurnality/nocturnality. Pineal produced melatonin (MLT) perfectly matches this phase-locked feature in that its production and secretion always occurs during the night in both diurnal and nocturnal mammals. As most rodents studied to date in the field of chronobiology are nocturnal, the aim in this study was to evaluate the effect of light manipulations and different photoperiods on a diurnal rodent, the fat sand rat, Psammomys obesus. The authors studied its daily rhythms of body temperature (Tb) and 6-sulphatoxymelatonin (6-SMT) under various photoperiodic regimes and light manipulations (acute and chronic exposures) while maintaining a constant ambient temperature of 30°C?±?1°C. The following protocols were used: (A) Control (CON) conditions 12L:12D; (A1) exposure to one light interference (LI) of CON-acclimated individuals for 30?min, 5?h after lights-off; (A2) short photoperiod (SP) acclimation (8L:16D) for 3 wks; (A3) 3 wks of SP acclimation with chronic LI of 15?min, three times a night at 4-h intervals; (A4) chronic exposure to constant dim blue light (470nm, 30 lux) for 24?h for 3 wks (LL). (B) The response to exogenous MLT administration, provided in drinking water, was measured under the following protocols: (B1) After chronic exposure to SP with LI, MLT was provided once, starting 1?h before the end of photophase; (B2) after a continuous exposure to dim blue light, MLT was provided at 15:00?h for 2?h for 2 wks; (B3) to CON animals, MLT was given intraperitoneally (i.p.) at 14:00?h. The results demonstrate that under CON acclimation, Psammomys obesus has robust Tb and 6-SMT daily rhythms in which the acrophase (peak time) of Tb is during the photophase, whereas that of 6-SMT is during scotophase. LI resulted in an elevation of Tb and a reduction of 6-SMT levels. A significant difference in the response was noted between acute and chronic exposure to LI, particularly in 6-SMT levels, which were lower than CON after LI and higher after chronic LI, implying an acclimation process. Constant exposure to blue light abolished Tb and 6-SMT rhythms in all the animals. MLT administration resumed the Tb daily rhythm in these animals, and had a recovery effect on the chronic LI-exposed animals, resulting in a Tb decrease. Altogether, the authors show in this study the different modifications of Tb rhythms and MLT levels in response to environmental light manipulations. 1. Of 17 adult males of nine species of southbound migrants that were accidentally killed at about the point of departure from Southern Britain in autumn, all possessed an interetitium in the process of post-nuptial rehabilitation (involving cholesterol production) even though they were flying away from the traditional breeding ground. Varying amounts of cholesterol-positive material still lingered in the tubules.
2. Of 11 juvenile males of seven species similarly collected only six individuals possessed an interatitium in which had already developed cholesterol. One adult Redwing showed pronounced signs of autumnal sexuality in the production of a few primary spermatocytes.
3. Cholesterol is almost certainly the precursor of the steroid hormones; and its early conversion into androgens in "stationary" species is probably responsible for the widespread autumnal sexual behaviour that occasionally culminates in "out-of-season" reproduction. Its presence in adult migrants probably explains the recrudescence in sexual behaviour that occurs in certain species just before their departure from the breeding grounds. In the nocturnal field mouse Mus booduga, the responsiveness of the circadian system to UV-A light of 2.5 W/m2 and 30 minutes duration is known to be phase dependent. The results of our experiments indicate that the phase shifts evoked by UV-A at the two phases, CT14 (circadian time 14) and CT20 increases nonlinearly with irradiance.
