We present the first molecular phylogeny of Cidaroida, one of the most problematic groups within the echinoids. Two genes??the nuclear ribosomal gene 28?S rRNA and the mitochondrial protein-encoding gene COI??were obtained from 21 specimens representing 17 genera and 20 species, among which 13 species belong to Cidaroida. Phylogenetic analyses of the combined molecular data using parsimony and maximum likelihood optimality criteria resulted in a well-resolved phylogeny. Our results are broadly compatible (with the notable exception of Cidaris cidaris) with previous results obtained from morphological data. We find that Cidaroida represent a monophyletic group sister to the non-cidaroid Echinoidea. The family Cidaridae sensu Mortensen (1928) and Fell (1966) is paraphyletic because of the placement of Psychocidaris ohshimai as sister-group to Histocidaris elegans. Inside the Stylocidarina, we show that the two Atlantic species Stylocidaris affinis and Stylocidaris lineata constitute a well-supported clade. However, these two taxa could also represent two morphotypes within a single species showing high morphological variation.  相似文献

We describe a novel biotope at 633 to 762 m depth on a vertical wall in the Whittard Canyon, an extensive canyon system reaching from the shelf to the deep sea on Ireland’s continental margin. We explored this wall with an ROV and compiled a photomosaic of the habitat. The assemblage contributing to the biotope was dominated by large limid bivalves, Acesta excavata (mean shell height 10.4 cm), and deep-sea oysters, Neopycnodonte zibrowii, at high densities, particularly at overhangs. Mean density of N. zibrowii increased with depth, with densities of the most closely packed areas of A. excavata also increasing with depth. Other taxa associated with the assemblage included the solitary coral Desmophyllum dianthus, cerianthid anemones, comatulid crinoids, the trochid gastropod Margarites sp., the portunid crab Bathynectes longispina and small fish of the family Bythitidae. The scleractinian coral Madrepora oculata, the pencil urchin Cidaris cidaris and a species of Epizoanthus were also common. Prominent but less abundant species included the flytrap anemone Actinoscyphia saginata, the carrier crab Paramola cuvieri, and the fishes Lepidion eques and Conger conger. Observations of the hydrography of the canyon system identified that the upper 500 m was dominated by Eastern North Atlantic Water, with Mediterranean Outflow Water beneath it. The permanent thermocline is found between 600 and 1000 m depth, i.e., in the depth range of the vertical wall and the dense assemblage of filter feeders. Beam attenuation indicated nepheloid layers present in the canyon system with the greatest amounts of suspended material at the ROV dive site between 500 and 750 m. A cross-canyon CTD transect indicated the presence of internal waves between these depths. We hypothesise that internal waves concentrate suspended sediment at high concentrations at the foot of the vertical wall, possibly explaining the large size and high density of filter-feeding molluscs.  相似文献

Abstract: Twenty‐five gastropod taxa are reported from the Early Jurassic (Hettangian to Toarcian) of England. Of these, 14 are identified to species level, and the remaining 11 are treated in open nomenclature. One genus (Lensataphrus) and six species are introduced as new. The new species are Lensataphrus tatei, Lensataphrus tenuis, Tricarilda toddi, Cylindrobullina dorsetensis, Cylindrobullina ventricosa and Consobrinella greeni. The following new combinations are introduced: Cassianopsis hebertana (d’Orbigny, 1852) for Neritopsis hebertana; Cryptaulax abscisum (Terquem and Piette, 1868) for Cerithium abscisum; and Cylindrobullina avena (Terquem, 1855) for Striactaeonina avena. Most of the genera and some of the species are also known from Central Europe (Germany and France). Typical vetigastropod genera that are present in England and Central Europe are Colpomphalus, Costataphrus, Ooliticia, Eucycloscala and Eucycloidea. The caenogastropod genera Levipleura and Cryptaulax are present in both regions, as are the heterobranchs Tricarilda and Cylindrobullina. The heterobranch genus Consobrinella is reported from England for the first time. Gastropods seem to follow the diversity trends of other marine invertebrates during the Early Jurassic. They diversify until the Late Pliensbachian but decrease sharply in number around the Pliensbachian–Toarcian boundary. This may reflect both regional anoxia and a global mass extinction event in the Early Toarcian.  相似文献

Summary The sporocyst and metacercaria of Leucochloridium paradoxum Carus, recovered from Succinea putris L. in Norway, are described and figured. Adults recovered from experimental infection of Taeniopygia guttata (Vieillot) with L. paradoxum metacercariae are described, using results from scanning electron microscopy, and compared with earlier information. The family Leucochloridiidae Poche is revised. Four genera are recognized within the family (i.e. Leucochloridium Carus, 1835; Urogonimus Monticelli, 1888; Urotocus Looss, 1899; Michajlovia Pojmanska, 1973). The larval ecological and morphological characteristics are tabulated for the three genera with known larval stages. The status of the genus Neoleucochloridium Kagan, 1951, is changed, on the grounds of larval similarities with Leucochloridium Carus. This means that within the genus Leucochloridium Carus three subgenera are erected, based primarily on sporocyst characteristics. These are Leucochloridium, Neoleucochloridium and Papilloleucochloridium. The diagnostic larval and adult characters are tabulated. Data are presented recording the presence of 49 species of bloodsucking cerato-pogonids in Trinidad, West Indies. Of these, 45 are Culicoides, one is a Leptoconops, and three belong to Forcipomyia (Lasiohelea). Five species are reported from Tobago: three Culicoides, one Leptoconops, and one Lasiohelea. The males of Culicoides benarrochi and C. fluviatilis are described for the first time, and the female of C. debilipalpis is redescribed. Culicoides filariferus and C. pseudodiabolicus are resurrected from synonymy, and characters are presented distinguishing them from C. diabolicus and C. guttatus. Seventeen species from the Palaeocene and Early Eocene of northern Europe, of which 12 are new, are described belonging to the extinct macroscelidean family Louisinidae, raised here from subfamily rank. These species belong to nine genera, of which five are new. The new genera are Walbeckodon , Berrulestes , Gigarton , Thryptodon , and Prolouisina . The new species are Walbeckodon krumbiegeli , Walbeckodon girardi , Paschatherium levei , Berrulestes phelizoni , Berrulestes pellouini , Berrulestes poirieri , Gigarton meyeri , Gigarton sigogneauae , Gigarton louisi , Thryptodon brailloni , Louisina marci , and Teilhardimys brisswalteri . Prolouisina is erected for ‘Louisinaatavella Russell, 1964. Cladistic analysis was undertaken to understand the relationships within the Louisinidae and between them and the North American family Apheliscidae, in which they had earlier been included as a subfamily. Louisinidae are shown to be sister group to a clade consisting of Apheliscidae plus Amphilemuridae and part of a paraphyletic and polyphyletic Adapisoricidae, all of which are tentatively considered to be stem members of the order Macroscelidea. The most primitive macroscelidid, Chambius, from the Early Eocene of northern Africa is nested within Apheliscidae when postcranial characters were included, but in a majority of cases within the Louisinidae when postcranial characters were excluded. The family Neckeraceae is composed of three distinct clades, of which two, i.e. the Neckera and Thamnobryum clades, are well defined. The third clade, consisting of species belonging to Caduciella, Curvicladium, Handeliobryum, Himantocladium, Homaliodendron, Hydrocryphaea, Neckera, Neckeropsis, Pinnatella, Shevockia and Taiwanobryum, is the focus of this study. Based on sequence data from the trnS-rps4-trnT-trnL-trnF plastid cluster and the rpl16 intron as well as from nuclear ITS1&2, the phylogenetic relationships of these genera are reconstructed. The nearest relatives of this clade are resolved shedding more light on the evolution of the family. The generic composition of the clade and its individual genera are discussed; polyphyly requires redefinition of Pinnatella, Neckeropsis and Homaliodendron. The positions of Touwia and Homalia within the family are addressed in an additional analysis based on more extensive sequence data, and the corresponding new combinations are made. Several further taxonomic changes are proposed, including Circulifolium gen. nov., comprising the former Homaliodendron exiguum and H. microdendron.  相似文献

In Silene pratensis three loci (g, gl and fg) control the glycosylation of isovitexin. Three alleles are known for both the g-locus (g, g G and g X ) and the gl-locus (gl, gl A and gl R ); for the fg-locus there are only two alleles (fg and Fg). The distribution of these alleles over 285 European populations of S. pratensis has been investigated. It was concluded that there are three different chemical races within S. pratensis in Europe. The first race contains the populations in western and southern Europe and displays high frequencies of g G , gl and fg. The frequencies of g G and gl R are very high in the second chemical race, which can be found in the USSR, Scandinavia and eastern Poland. The third chemical race occurs in central Europe and in this race the frequencies of both g and gl R are high, Fg has low to moderate frequencies in the second and third groups. The alleles gl A and g X are seldom found in S. pratensis, but are present in the closely related S. dioica. They do occur with low frequencies in some populations of S. pratensis, possibly as a result of hybridization with S. dioica.  相似文献

We have sequenced most of the coding region of the gene Dopa decarboxylase (Ddc) in 24 fruitfly species. The Ddc gene is quite informative about Drosophila phylogeny. Several outstanding issues in Drosophila phylogeny are resolved by analysis of the Ddc sequences alone or in combination with three other genes, Sod, Adh, and Gpdh. The three species groups, melanogaster, obscura, and willistoni, are each monophyletic and all three combined form a monophyletic group, which corresponds to the subgenus Sophophora. The Sophophora subgenus is the sister group to all other Drosophila subgenera (including some named genera, previously considered outside the Drosophila genus, namely, Scaptomyza and Zaprionus, which are therefore downgraded to the category of subgenus). The Hawaiian Drosophila and Scaptomyza are a monophyletic group, which is the sister clade to the virilis and repleta groups of the subgenus Drosophila. The subgenus Drosophila appears to be paraphyletic, although this is not definitely resolved. The two genera Scaptodrosophila and Chymomyza are older than the genus Drosophila. The data favor the hypothesis that Chymomyza is older than Scaptodrosophila, although this issue is not definitely resolved. Molecular evolution is erratic. The rates of nucleotide substitution in 3rd codon position relative to positions 1 + 2 vary from one species lineage to another and from gene to gene. Abstract. A cladistic analysis of the American genera of Embiidae is presented, using fifty‐seven representative taxa and ninety‐four morphological characters. The results support the elevation (and significant re‐delimitation) of the subfamily Archembiinae to family level; as delimited here, Archembiidae, revised status, includes the genera Ecuadembia n.gen., Calamoclostes Enderlein, Archembia Ross, Embolyntha Davis, Xiphosembia Ross, Ochrembia Ross, Dolonembia Ross, Conicercembia Ross, Neorhagadochir Ross, Pachylembia Ross, Rhagadochir Enderlein, Litosembia Ross, Navasiella Davis, Ambonembia Ross, Malacosembia Ross, Biguembia Szumik, Gibocercus Szumik and Pararhagadochir Davis. The results also indicate that some genera recently proposed are unjustified and therefore they are synonymized: Argocercembia Ross (a junior synonym of Embolyntha), Brachypterembia Ross (Neorhagadochir), Scelembia Ross (Rhagadochir), Ischnosembia Ross (Ambonembia) and Aphanembia Ross (Biguembia); all new synonymy. The new genus Ecuadembia is described (type species Archembia arida Ross). Ischnosembia surinamensis (Ross) is returned to the genus Pararhagadochir. The following species synonymies are established: Archembia lacombea Ross 1971 = Archembia kotzbaueri (Navas 1925), Archembia peruviana Ross 2001 = Archembia batesi (MacLachlan 1877), and Conicercembia septentrionalis (Mariño & Márquez 1988) = Conicercembia tepicensis Ross 1984; all new synonymy. The family Archembiidae, and all its constituent genera, are diagnosed and described. The genus Microembia Ross (originally described as an Embiidae) is transferred to Anisembiidae. Pachylembiinae, Scelembiinae, and Microembiinae proposed by Ross are unsupported by the present cladistic analysis. 1  相似文献

The biological rate equation that describes the overall rate of substrate uptake by microbial films has been extended to microbial flocs with the aid of a shape parameter. The “solid”- and liquid-phase diffusion limitations are explored and found to depend largely on a dimensionles characteristic size k21Vp/Ap. Procedures are discussed by which k21Vp/Ap can be determined from experimental data on the conversion efficiency in a completely mixed fermentor and measurements carried out on flocs recovered from the fermentor are assessed. Floc size distributions are shown to affect the performance characteristics of a fermentor when some of the flocs are sufficiently large to exhibit a diffusional limitation, and it is concluded that a single mean floc size (k21Vp/Ap)* is sufficient to characterize a given distribution, at least when all the flocs are geometrically similar. The mean floc size closely corresponds to the “surface” mean floc size of the floc size distributions.  相似文献

The genus Podothrips Hood is redefined, and three new species are described: orion and australis from Australia and moundi from New Guinea. Two new synonymies are recorded in Podothrips and fuscus Moulton and monsterae Moulton are excluded. A key to the nineteen species and an annotated catalogue are provided. We present a phylogenetic analysis of the New World dipsadids based on an expanded data matrix that includes 246 terminal taxa including 196 dipsadids. The species are sampled for eight genes (12S, 16S, cytb, nd2, nd4, bdnf, c‐mos, rag2). The data are explored using two distinct optimality procedures—maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood—and two alignment strategies—dynamic homology and static homology. Two previously unsampled dipsadid genera, Sordellina and Rhachidelus, are now included in the analysis. The definitions of the genera, Erythrolamprus, Clelia, Hypsirhynchus, Philodryas and Phimophis, and the tribes Alsophiini, Echinantherini and Conophiini, are revised. In order to maintain monophyly, the genus Umbrivaga is synonymized with Erythrolamprus, and two new genera are erected to accommodate Phimophis iglesiasi and Clelia rustica, as well as their closely related species. Phylogenetic relationships of 48 species of Caragana (Fabaceae: tribe Hedysareae) and one representative each of Astragalus, Calophaca, Halimodendron, and Hedysarum are estimated from DNA sequences of the rbcL gene, trnStrnG intron and spacer, and ITS region. At least one representative of all five sections and 12 series within Caragana are included. Analyses yielded strongly supported clades corresponding to sections Caragana, Bracteolatae, and Frutescentes. The species of section Jubatae are distributed among three strongly supported clades, i.e., one with the species of section Bracteolatae, another with two species of section Spinosae, and a third as sister to section Frutescentes. All but the last of these six clades are corroborated by at least one unambiguously traced morphological character. The placement of the other four species of section Spinosae are not well supported and lack unambiguous morphological synapomorphies, and the samples of Calophaca and Halimodendron nest within Caragana with weak support.  相似文献

The theory of organismic sets, developed in previous papers (Bull. Math. Biophysics,29, 139–152; 389–393; 643–647) is further generalized. To conform better with some biological and sociological facts the basic definitions are made more general. The conclusion is reached that every organismic setS o is in general the union of three disjoined subsetsS o1 ,S o2 andS o3 . Of these the subsetS o1 , called the “core” is equivalent to an organismic set defined in previous publications. Its functioning is essential for the functioning ofS o . The subsetsS o2 andS o3 , taken alone, are not organismic sets. The first of them is responsible for such biological or sociological functions which are not necessary for the “immediate” survival ofS o but which are important for adaptation to changing environment and are therefore essential for a “long range survival.” The second one,S o3 , is responsible for biological or social functions which are irrelevant for the survival ofS o . Biological and sociological examples ofS o2 andS o3 are given. In addition to the fundamental theorem established in the first of the above mentioned papers, three new conclusions are derived. One is that in organismic sets of order higher than zero not all elements are specialized. The second is that every organismic set of order higher than zero is mortal. The third is that with increasing specialization the intensities of some activities in some elements ofS o are reduced. Again the biological and sociological examples are given. At the end some very general speculations are made on the possible relation between biology and physics and on the possibility of “relationalizing” physics.  相似文献

The Tandanicolinae is reviewed, redefined and considered a subfamily of the Fellodistomidae. The Monodhelminthinae Dollfus, 1937, Mehratrematinae Srivastava, 1939, Prosogonariinae Mehra, 1963 and Buckleytrematinae Yamaguti, 1971 are synonyms of the Tandanicolinae. Genera included in the Tandanicolinae are Tandanicola, Monodhelmis, Buckleytrema and Prosogonarium. Burnellus and Mehratrema are made new synonyms of Monodhelmis. The composition of each genus is reviewed. Monodhelmis arii Yamaguti, 1952, Mehratrema arii Gu & Shen, 1979, Mehratrema dollfusi Srivastava, 1939, Monodhelmis philippinensis Velasquez, 1961, Mehratrema polynemusinis Chauhan, 1943 and Mehratrema skrjabini Karyakarte, 1969 are considered synonyms of Monodhelmis torpedinis. Monodhelmis elongatus Bilqees, 1970 is considered a species inquirenda. Prosogonarium angelae n. sp. is described from Euristhmus lepturus from Moreton Bay, Queensland. It is distinguished by the number and distribution of the vitelline follicles and the extent of the caeca. New records are given for Monodhelmis torpedinis from Arius graeffei and E. lepturus, M. trichofurcata from Tandanus tandanus, and Buckleytrema indica from A. graeffei, all from southern Queensland. Buckleytrema indica is redescribed and B. postacetabulorchis is synonymised with that species. Relationships within the Tandanicolinae were considered by cladistic analysis.  相似文献

The genus Scoparia from the Hailuogou Glacier area in the south‐eastern fringe of the Tibetan Plateau of south‐western China is studied, nine species are revealed by combining DNA barcoding (658 bp of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, COI) and morphology. Studies show that Scoparia species from the Hailuogou Glacier area are 37.5% as many as all the previously known congeners in China. Six species are described as new to science: S coparia simplicissima Li sp. nov. , S coparia tribulosa Li sp. nov. , S coparia longispina Li sp. nov. , S coparia gibbosa Li sp. nov. , S coparia globosa Li sp. nov. , and S coparia annulata Li sp. nov. The female of Scoparia metaleucalis is described for the first time herein. All species are either diagnosed or described and illustrated, and a map of China showing the topography and localities where Scoparia species are recorded is also provided, including the species number of all the recorded localities. The results reveal the exceptional species diversity of Scoparia from the Hailuogou Glacier area, as well as demonstrate that the integration of DNA barcoding and morphological approaches is highly effective for indentifying scopariine moths in the Hailougou glacier area.
