The Shimba Hills ecosystem along the south coast of Kenya is a key East African biodiversity hotspot.Historically, it is biogeographically assignable to the East African coastal biome. We examined the current Shimba Hills herpetofauna and their zoogeographical affinities to the coastal forests and nearby Eastern Arc Mountains biodiversity hotspots. The key studied sites included the Shimba Hills National Reserve, forest reserves, Kaya forests, and adjacent private land. Data on herpetofaunal richness were obtained from recent field surveys, literature, and specimens held at the National Museums of Kenya, Herpetology Section Collection,Nairobi. The Makadara, Mwele, and LongoMwagandi forests within the Shimba Hills National Reserve hosted the highest number of unique and rare species. Generally, the forest reserves and Kaya forests were important refuges for forestassociated species. On private land, Mukurumudzi Dam riparian areas were the best amphibian habitat and were host to three IUCN(Red List) EndangeredEN amphibian species, namely, Boulengerula changamwensis, Hyperolius rubrovermiculatus, and Afrixalus sylvaticus, as well as one snake species Elapsoidea nigra. Using herpetofauna as zoogeographic indicators, the Shimba Hills were determined to be at a crossroads between the coastal forests(13 endemic species) and the Eastern Arc Mountains(seven endemic species). Most of the Eastern Arc Mountains endemic species were from recent records, and thus more are likely to be found in the future. This 'hybrid' species richness pattern is attributable to the hilly topography of the Shimba Hills and their proximity to the Indian Ocean. This has contributed to the Shimba Hills being the richest herpetofauna area in Kenya, with a total of 89 and 38 reptile and amphibian species, respectively.Because of its unique zoogeography, the Shimba Hills ecosystem is undoubtedly a key biodiversity area for conservation investment.  相似文献

The coastal forests of Kenya are conservation priorities hosting high levels of biodiversity. Monitoring of biodiversity in these forests is therefore necessary to understand and reverse negative trends in good time. Using the Important Bird Area (IBA) monitoring framework, a participatory approach, state (habitat condition), pressure (threats) and response (conservation action) indicators of twelve coastal Kenya forest IBAs were assessed from 2004 to 2011. Trends for these indicators were assessed at six sites for which sufficient data existed: Arabuko‐Sokoke, Dakatcha Woodlands, Gede Ruins, Lower Tana River, Shimba Hills and Taita Hills, and baselines were described for remaining six. Changes were always small, but state deteriorated in Gede, Lower Tana and Shimba Hills, remained the same (unfavourable) in Arabuko‐Sokoke and Dakatcha, and improved in Taita Hills. Pressure reduced in Arabuko‐Sokoke, Dakatcha and Taita Hills, deteriorated in Lower Tana and Shimba Hills and remained the same (medium) in Gede. Response improved in Dakatcha, remained the same (medium) in Shimba Hills, and deteriorated in the rest. As there was an apparent overall deterioration in the forests assessed, improved management of the protected sites and increased conservation action through community engagement around protected areas and within the nonprotected IBAs are recommended.  相似文献

Abstract. A colony of Glossina pallidipes Austen which originated from Nguruman, Rift Valley Province, Kenya, was significantly more susceptible to infection (19.3%) with a stock of Trypanosoma congolense Broden isolated from G. pallidipes in Nguruman than a colony of the same species which originated from Shimba Hills, Coast Province, Kenya (5.6%). Male G. pallidipes from Nguruman were significantly more susceptible than females to this T. congolense stock whilst the susceptibility of both sexes of G. pallidipes from Shimba Hills did not differ significantly. All six goats on which six infected G. pallidipes fed singly (three tsetse per colony) became infected. Similarly, the G. pallidipes colony of Nguruman origin was significantly more susceptible to infection (16.4%) with a stock of T. congolense isolated from G. pallidipes in Shimba Hills than the colony of Shimba Hills origin (4.9%). The susceptibility of the sexes of G. pallidipes from both the colonies to this stock of T. congolense did not differ significantly. Again, all six goats on which six infected G. pallidipes fed singly (three tsetse per colony) became infected. If the observed differences in susceptibility of the two G. pallidipes colonies reflect transmission of trypanosomes by the two allopatric populations of tsetse in the field, then the epidemiology of congolense-trypanosomiasis in livestock must differ between these two areas of Kenya endemic for trypanosomiasis.  相似文献

A very diverse ciliate community was found in nine soil samples from the Shimba Hills Nature Reserve in Kenya, equatorial Africa. The ciliates, respectively, their resting cysts, were re-activated from air-dried samples using the non-flooded Petri dish method. Species were determined from life and by silver impregnation. 34 (27%) of the 125 taxa identified had not yet been described in 1985, when the samples were collected and investigated. The richest samples, each containing 59 species, were those from a deciduous primary forest and a young secondary pine forest. The most remarkable species discovered in the Shimba Hills were Krassniggia auxiliaris, Bresslauides terricola, Gigantothrix herzogi, and Afrothrix darbyshirei. They are flagships with a very distinct morphology and easy to recognise due to their extraordinarily large body size. Krassniggia auxiliaris occurs also in Australia and probably has a restricted Gondwanan distribution, like some other ciliates. Bresslauides terricola was later found in soils from all main biogeographical regions, except for Antarctica. Gigantothrix herzogi and Afrothrix darbyshirei are still unique to the Shimba Hills. The following taxa are described in detail: Sikorops woronowiczae nov. gen., nov. spec., Arcuospathidium multinucleatum nov. spec., Dileptus similis Foissner, 1995, Plagiocampa bitricha nov. spec., Drepanomonas exigua exigua Penard, 1922, D. exigua bidentata nov. sspec., Parafurgasonia protectissima (Penard, 1922) nov. comb., P. terricola nov. spec., Brachyosoma brachypoda mucosa nov. sspec., Gigantothrix herzogi nov. gen., nov. spec., Afrothrix darbyshirei nov. gen., nov. spec., Oxytricha africana nov. spec., and O. elegans nov. spec.  相似文献

Abstract. A colony of Glossina pallidipes which originated from Nguruman, Rift Valley Province, Kenya, was significantly more susceptible than a colony of the same species which originated from Shimba Hills, Coast Province, Kenya, to infection with a stock of Trypanosoma simiae CP 11 isolated from wild G. austeni in Coast Province, Kenya, irrespective of whether pigs or goats were used as infecting hosts. Male G. pallidipes from both the colonies were more susceptible than females to this T. simiae stock. Similarly, a G. pallidipes colony of Nguruman origin was significantly more susceptible than the colony of Shimba Hills origin to infection with another stock of T. simiae CP 813 isolated from wild G. pallidipes in Coast Province, Kenya, again irrespective of whether pigs or goats were used as infecting hosts. The susceptibility of the sexes of G. pallidipes from both the colonies to T. simiae CP 813 did not differ significantly when pigs were used as infecting hosts, but male G. pallidipes from both the colonies were significantly more susceptible than female tsetse to this T. simiae stock when goats were used as infecting hosts. Nevertheless, if the observed differences in susceptibility of the two G. pallidipes colonies reflect transmission of trypanosomes by the two allopatric populations of tsetse in the field, then the epidemiology of simiae- trypanosomiasis probably differs between these two areas of Kenya.  相似文献

We investigate the structure between and within colonies of Schedorhinotermes lamanianus (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) at a cluster of foraging galleries in Shimba Hills National Reserve, Kenya. Three independent methods (morphometrics of minor soldiers, multilocus fingerprinting from genomic DNA of workers, and aggression tests between workers) yielded concordant results concerning number and spatial extent of colonies as well as variation between and within colonies. At least three colonies exist in our study area. Genetic data reveal that the largest colony is genetically and spatially substructured in three subsidiary nests, which may form reproductive units. These subsidiary nests were not completely isolated as we were able to document exchange of workers. Subsidiary nests may facilitate foundation of colonies by budding which may generate isolation by distance (population viscosity).  相似文献

Genetic diversity within and among three wild-type natural populations and one melanic laboratory population of Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were evaluated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis. Although extensive genetic diversity occurs among individuals from different geographic populations (P = 54.5%, h = 0.209, I = 0.305), the majority of the genetic diversity is within populations and not between populations (G(ST) = 0.172), indicating high gene flow (N(M) = 2.403) and suggesting that M. separata in northern China are a part of a single large metapopulation. Genetic diversity in the natural populations was significantly higher than that in the melanic laboratory population (with P = 43.4% versus P = 25.9%, h = 0.173 versus h = 0.086, and I = 0.251 versus I = 0.127), suggesting that the melanic laboratory population is narrowly genetic-based and genetically uniform. Genetic similarities based on AFLP data were calculated, and cluster analysis was preformed to graphically display groupings between individuals and populations. Individuals from the same region were not grouped together in cluster analysis of three natural populations, whereas melanic individuals from laboratory population were grouped together very well. Four subpopulations were clustered into two broad groups. Melanic laboratory population became a single group, which had apparent differentiation from the other group in which three natural subpopulations were included. These results indicated that although high genetic variability existed among the individuals of natural populations, there was little genetic differentiation among three geographic populations that could be explained by the effects of the long distance migration of the oriental armyworm in China enhanced the level of gene flow. Influences of migration on the genetic polymorphism and differentiations that make a significant contribution to evolution in this insect are reviewed.  相似文献

Abstract Two large colonies, originating from allopatric populations of Glossina pallidipes Austen, in the Shimba Hills and Nguruman, Kenya, which differ biologically and with respect to vectorial competence, were compared at fourteen enzyme loci using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The colonies had similar levels of genetic diversity with approximately half of the loci being polymorphic, an average of 1.6-1.7 alleles per locus, and a mean heterozygosity per locus of approximately 18.4%. However, the colonies differed significantly in allele frequencies at the loci for phosphoglucomutase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, xanthine oxidase, octanol dehydrogenase and phosphoglucose isomerase. The results were compared with earlier studies on this species and no evidence was found for selection of specific alleles during establishment or maintenance of colonies of G.pallidipes , nor were specific chromosomes, or marker genes, associated with the biological differences between the two colonies.  相似文献

The identity of a species of Psyttalia, a parasitoid of tephritid fruit flies in Kenya, was investigated. Individuals reared from coffee infested with Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Medfly) and two other tephritid species in Kenya were compared with individuals of Psyttalia concolor (Szépligeti) from a laboratory culture in Italy used in augmentative biological control of olive fly, Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin). Reciprocal crosses showed full compatibility, with production of viable female offspring. A preliminary morphometric analysis demonstrated that most individuals originating from Italy could be separated from most of those from Kenya based largely on differences in overall size.  相似文献

Arabica coffee was sampled from two sites in the central highlands of Kenya (Rurima, Ruiru) and one site on the western side of the Rift Valley (Koru). Three species of ceratitidine Tephritidae, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), C. rosa Karsch and Trirhithrum coffeae Bezzi, were reared from sites in the central highlands, and an additional species, C. anonae Graham, was recovered from the western-most site. Ten species of parasitic Hymenoptera were reared from these tephritids. The parasitoid assemblage was dominated by koinobionts. Eight of the species are koinobiont endoparasitoids, but only one idiobiont larval ectoparasitoid was reared, and only one idiobiont pupal endoparasitoid. The effects of sampling bias on determination of parasitoid assemblage size associated with concealed hosts are discussed. The potential for use of these parasitoids in biological control is also discussed. Most of the parasitoid species recovered during this study are capable of developing on C. capitata, while several also attack C. rosa. Both flies are notorious pests of tropical and subtropical fruits.

Opiine wasps are parasitoids of dacine fruit flies, the primary horticultural pests of Australia and the South Pacific. A taxonomic synopsis and distribution and host records (44% of which are new) for each of the 15 species of dacine-parasitizing opiine braconids found in the South Pacific is presented. Species dealt with are Diachasmimorpha hageni (Fullaway), D. kraussii (Fullaway), D. longicaudata (Ashmead), D. tryoni (Cameron), Fopius arisanus (Sonan), F. deeralensis (Fullaway), F. ferrari Carmichael & Wharton sp. n., F. illusorius (Fischer) comb. n., F. schlingeri Wharton, Opius froggatti Fullaway, Psyttalia fijiensis (Fullaway), P. muesebecki (Fischer), P. novaguineensis (Szépligeti) and Utetes perkinsi (Fullaway). A potentially undescribed species, which may be a colour morph of F. vandenboschi (Fullaway), is diagnosed but not formally described. Fopius vandenboschi sensu stricto, Diachasmimorpha fullawayi Silvestri, Psyttalia concolor Szépligeti and P. incisi Silvestri have been liberated into the region but are not considered to have established: a brief diagnosis of each is included. Biosteres illusorius Fischer is formally transferred to the genus Fopius. A single opiine specimen reared from a species of Bactrocera (Bulladacus) appears to be Utetes albimanus (Szépligeti), but damage to this specimen and to the holotype (the only previously known specimen) means that this species remains unconfirmed as a fruit fly parasite: a diagnosis of U. cf. albimanus is provided. Psyttalia novaguineensis could not be adequately separated from P. fijiensis using previously published characterizations and further work to resolve this complex is recommended. A key is provided to all taxa.  相似文献

Recent development of DNA markers provides powerful tools for population genetic analyses. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers result from a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based DNA fingerprinting technique that can detect multiple restriction fragments in a single polyacrylamide gel, and thus are potentially useful for population genetic studies. Because AFLP markers have to be analysed as dominant loci in order to estimate population genetic diversity and genetic structure parameters, one must assume that dominant (amplified) alleles are identical in state, recessive (unamplified) alleles are identical in state, AFLP fragments segregate according to Mendelian expectations and that the genotypes of an AFLP locus are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). The HWE assumption is untestable for natural populations using dominant markers. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers segregate as codominant alleles, and can therefore be used to test the HWE assumption that is critical for analysing AFLP data. This study examined whether the dominant AFLP markers could provide accurate estimates of genetic variability for the Aedes aegypti mosquito populations of Trinidad, West Indies, by comparing genetic structure parameters using AFLP and RFLP markers. For AFLP markers, we tested a total of five primer combinations and scored 137 putative loci. For RFLP, we examined a total of eight mapped markers that provide a broad coverage of mosquito genome. The estimated average heterozygosity with AFLP markers was similar among the populations (0.39), and the observed average heterozygosity with RFLP markers varied from 0.44 to 0.58. The average FST (standardized among-population genetic variance) estimates were 0.033 for AFLP and 0.063 for RFLP markers. The genotypes at several RFLP loci were not in HWE, suggesting that the assumption critical for analysing AFLP data was invalid for some loci of the mosquito populations in Trinidad. Therefore, the results suggest that, compared with dominant molecular markers, codominant DNA markers provide better estimates of population genetic variability, and offer more statistical power for detecting population genetic structure.  相似文献

The African weaver ant (Oecophylla longinoda) is known to be highly aggressive toward conspecific aliens. In the study area Shimba Hills Reserve (Kenya) individual territories sometimes covered an area of up to approximately 1600 m2, comprising 17 major trees. The territorial defense is organized by an elaborate defense recruitment system, which can also be aimed against several other ant species, which are potential competitors of Oecophylla for essential resources. This selective “enemy identification” seems to be the major behavioral mechanism by which the mosaic distribution of ecologically dominant ants is regulated.  相似文献

The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri Kuwayama) is a key pest of Citrus sp. worldwide, as it acts as a vector for Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus, the bacterial pathogen that causes citrus Huanglongbing. Diaphorina citri has been reported in Kenya, Tanzania, and more recently in Ethiopia. This study assessed the genetic diversity and phylogeographic structure of the pest to gain insights into the potential sources of its introduction into Africa. Population structure and differentiation of D. citri populations from China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and the USA were assessed using 10 microsatellite loci. Additionally, five new complete mitogenomes of D. citri collected in China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and the USA were analyzed in the context of publicly available sequences. Genotype data grouped the D. citri populations from Kenya and Tanzania in one cluster, and those from Ethiopia formed a separate cluster. The two genetic clusters inferred from genotype data were congruent with mitochondrial sequence data. The mitogenomes from Kenya/Tanzania/China had 99.0% similarity, and the Ethiopia/USA had 99.9% similarity. In conclusion, D. citri populations in eastern Africa have different sources, as the Kenyan and Tanzanian populations probably originated from southeastern Asia, while the Ethiopian population most probably originated from the Americas.  相似文献

Studies examining intraspecific variation in plant species with widespread distributions and disjunct populations have mainly concentrated on temperate species. Here, we determined the genetic structure of a broadly distributed wetland tropical tree, Pterocarpus officinalis (Jacq.), from eight Neotropical populations using amplified length fragment polymorphisms (AFLP). AFLPs proved highly variable with almost half (48%) of the genetic variation at these loci occurring among individuals within populations. Nonetheless, there was a strong geographical pattern in the distribution of AFLP variation within P. officinalis. Caribbean and continental populations fell into two well-defined genetic clusters supported by the presence of a number of unique AFLP bands. Within these two regions, there were also strong genetic differences among populations, caused mainly by frequency differences in AFLP bands, making it difficult to determine the evolutionary relationships among populations. In addition, our analysis of P. officinalis revealed striking differences in the levels of AFLP variation among the eight populations sampled. In general, Caribbean populations had lower genetic diversity than continental populations. Moreover, there was a clear loss in AFLP diversity with distance from the continent among Caribbean populations. The overall genetic pattern within P. officinalis suggests that past colonization history, coupled with genetic drift within local populations, rather than contemporary gene flow are the major forces shaping variation within this species.  相似文献

Psyttalia concolor (Szèpligeti) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a koinobiont endoparasitoid of several species of tephritid (Diptera) larvae, such as Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Here, we report on the effects of imidacloprid and fipronil on P. concolor females, when different routes of exposure were evaluated: residual contact (cover and bait sprays) and via treatment of host species. Moreover, the persistence of the bait formulated compound also was studied. For each experiment, lethal (mortality) and sublethal effects (parasitization rate or longevity) were studied. Fipronil produced 100% mortality irrespective of exposure route, and it was very persistent, because 34-d-old residues still produced this high mortality rate, being as toxic or even more toxic than the reference product dimethoate. Toxicity of imidacloprid depends on the mode of exposure, although always remained less toxic than dimethoate. Imidacloprid caused high mortality or sublethal effect to the progeny in cover sprays and when applied via treated host, being harmless in bait sprays application. In conclusion, our results suggest that fipronil should not be used in the field when the parasitoid is present. On the contrary, although imidacloprid is physiologically active against females of P. concolor, ecological selectivity may result through the use of bait treatment.  相似文献

Genetic structure and diversity of natural populations of prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) were studied using AFLP markers and then compared with the diversity of the RGC2 disease resistance gene cluster. Screening of 696 accessions from 41 populations using 319 AFLP markers showed that eastern Turkish and Armenian populations were the most diverse populations and might be located in the origin and center of diversity of L. serriola. Screening 709 accessions using the microsatellite MSATE6 that is located in the coding region of most RGC2 homologs detected 366 different haplotypes. Again, the eastern Turkish and Armenian populations had the highest diversities at the RGC2 cluster. The diversities at the RGC2 cluster in different populations were significantly correlated with their genomewide diversities. There was significant variation of copy number of RGC2 homologs in different populations, ranging from 12 to 22 copies per genome. The nucleotide diversities of two conserved lineages (type II) of RGC2 genes (K and L) were not correlated with diversities calculated using the MSATE6 or AFLP data. We hypothesize that the high genomewide diversity and diversity of the RGC2 cluster in eastern Turkish and Armenian populations resulted from high abiotic and biotic stresses in the regions of origin of L. serriola.  相似文献

The Sable antelope (Hippotragus niger roosevelti, Heller, 1910) is nationally endemic to Shimba Hills National Reserve (SHNR) in Kenya. In the past few decades, its population has declined considerably. Despite the alarming decline and resultant localised distribution, a little information exists on the species population status and foraging ecology. Different ecological research techniques were used to collect relevant data and information on the species population structure and feeding habits. The results showed that Sable population comprised of sex and age structures that are skewed towards females and adult, respectively, whereas young and subadult populations were not significantly different. Seasonal change did not have significant influence on the diversity of food plants selected by Sable. Although crude protein and phosphorous levels in Sable faecal samples differed significantly between the seasons, they were within the recommended minimum maintenance requirements for wild herbivores. The study concludes that Sable has good survival rate and potential to breed but lacks stability in the population. Additionally, Sable forage quality and availability may not be limiting its population growth. There is need to establish management strategies for improving reproduction in Sable and understand the level of competition of the species with other mega herbivores in SHNR.  相似文献

Fatty acid composition of total lipids, neutral lipids and phospholipids of strains of Aedes aegypti were determined. The fatty acid composition of the strains differed quantitatively with regard to the relative percentage of commonly occurring fatty acids. Gas-liquid chromatography of fatty acid methyl esters showed 18:1 (oleic or elaidic) to be the predominant fatty acid. The fatty acid was identified as oleic by argentation thin-layer chromatography. A modified colorimetric method was used to determine tissue-free fatty acids. The lipids were predominantly triacylglycerol with lesser amounts of free fatty acids and decreasing amount of sterol ester, sterol, monoacylglycerol, diacylglycerol and hydrocarbons. The data show considerable lipid differences between the Caribbean strains (Les Cayes, Haiti, and San Juan, Puerto Rico) and the Jakarta (Indonesia) strain. The Shimba Hills (Kenya) strain was more similar to Jakarta than to the Caribbean strains. The results obtained with the different strains are discussed in relation to the established oral susceptibility to Dengue 1 and Dengue 2, yellow fever, and genetic analysis by isoenzyme studies.  相似文献
