We examined the differences between the concentrations of chemical elements in caries-changed primary teeth and permanent ones with a division into the root and the crown. The study comprised 27 children aged from 4 to 11 yr and 36 adults aged from 36 to 71 yr. We examined the elements with the total reflection X-ray fluorescence method. The lowest concentrations of calcium, manganese, strontium, lead, and copper were in the roots of primary teeth compared to the roots of permanent ones. The calcium, nickel, zinc, lead, and copper concentrations were significantly higher in the roots of primary teeth than in the roots of permanent teeth. However, the zinc concentration was higher both in the root and crown of primary teeth than in permanent teeth. On the basis of our investigations, we can conclude that the content of some elements (manganese, copper, strontium, and lead) is higher in caries permanent teeth than in primary ones. The nickel and zinc concentrations are higher in the teeth of the children than the adults. However, the content of other elements (calcium, chromium, iron) is similar in both kinds of teeth.  相似文献

The influence of exposure to lead and cadmium on serum concentrations of calcium, zinc, and copper was examined in 299 healthy Croatian men 20-55 years of age, including 143 workers in a lead battery factory and 156 control subjects. The interrelationship of blood lead, activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, erythrocyte protoporphyrin, blood cadmium, age, smoking habits, and alcohol consumption with respect to serum calcium, zinc, and copper levels was calculated by forward stepwise multiple regression. The results showed that chronic moderate exposure to lead decreased serum zinc, calcium and, to a lesser extent, copper levels. Exposure to cadmium occurred mostly through smoking and seemed to contribute to a decrease of serum zinc. All changes in serum concentrations of these essential elements were significant but remained within the normal range. The results suggest possible mechanisms of lead- and/or cadmium-induced adverse health effects in humans.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare lead concentrations in 86 human permanent teeth extracted from residents of three different geographical regions. The study included 31 permanent teeth from residents of Mitrovica (Kosovo), 32 from Klina (Kosovo) and 23 from Graz (Austria). The concentrations of lead were measured using Agilent 7500c inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) (Agilent, Waldbronn, Germany). The comparisons between groups were based on the geographic area, age and gender. The highest lead level was found in teeth extracted from Mitrovica residents (22.3 mg/kg), followed by Klina (3.2 mg/kg), and Graz (1.7 mg/kg). Lead levels in teeth from Mitrovica residents are significantly higher (p < 0.0001) than in other two groups, possibly due to environmental contamination with lead. Overall results in this study support the concept that tooth lead level may present an important indicator in evaluating environmental exposure of human population to heavy metals.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to confirm if there is a link between the alteration in blood levels of trace elements (chromium, copper, lead, cadmium, and zinc) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) in healthy and diabetic states. This study is the first study to test these parameters in Egyptians. The study included 150 subjects divided into the following four groups: healthy middle-aged, healthy elderly, middle-aged diabetics, and elderly diabetics. Our results revealed a statistically significant decrease in the level of DHEAS in the elderly compared to middle-aged healthy and diabetic groups (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference between the middle-aged groups with respect to zinc, copper, chromium, and cadmium levels. Zinc and copper were lower in the diabetic subjects while chromium and cadmium were higher in the same group in comparison to healthy subjects. In the elderly groups, there were significant increases in chromium and cadmium levels in diabetic subjects rather than healthy ones. There was a significant increase in the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance level in the elderly healthy and diabetic groups and a significant decrease in the glutathione level in the elderly groups. There was no correlation between the levels of trace elements and DHEAS or between the levels of DHEAS, oxidants, and antioxidants in all of the tested groups. In conclusion, only the DHEAS level was correlated with age. There was no difference between the diabetic and healthy groups with respect to the levels of trace elements, with the exception of chromium and cadmium, which suggests the effect of pollution on the pathogenesis of diabetes in Egyptians. No correlation existed between the levels of DHEAS and trace elements, oxidants, and antioxidants. Finally, we believe that there is a large regional variation in the levels of trace elements due to different environmental exposure and nutritional factors which are responsible for contradictory results regarding the pathogenesis of diseases related to alterations in the levels of trace elements.  相似文献

Determination of element levels in bones and teeth can complement knowledge of the diagnostics and etiology of various diseases in prehistoric populations. Calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and lead (Pb) content were analyzed in teeth from human skeletons dated to 3,000–1,400 BC from Malopolska Upland loess. Levels of iron and calcium were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), and lead, cadmium, and copper levels were measured using anodic stripping voltametry (ASV). Molar teeth from specimens with cribra orbitalia were selected for analyses, and teeth from specimens with no pathological changes were used as a control. No significant correlations between the content of particular elements and the tooth class, specimen age, or depth of burial pit were observed. The Fe content in specimens with cribra orbitalia is not the best measure for this disease's etiology. Thus, interelement correlations and proportions might give a better picture of the biological condition of the specimen and of the investigated groups. The study objective was to evaluate the effect of occupational lead exposure on blood concentrations of zinc, iron, copper, selenium and proteins related to them, such as transferrin, caeruloplasmin and haptoglobin. The examined group consisted of 192 healthy male employees of zinc?Clead works. By the degree of lead exposure, the exposed group was subdivided into three subgroups. The control group was composed of 73 healthy male administrative workers. The markers of lead exposure (blood levels of lead and zinc protoporphyrin) were significantly elevated in the exposed group compared with the control group. Additionally, concentrations of copper and caeruloplasmin were raised. The significant increase in haptoglobin level was observed only in the low exposure group. Selenium levels were significantly decreased, whereas iron, zinc and transferrin levels were unchanged in the exposed group compared with the control group. There were positive correlations between the lead toxicity parameters and the copper and caeruloplasmin levels. In conclusion, the effect of occupational exposure to lead on the metabolism of trace metals appears to be limited. However, significant associations between lead exposure and levels of copper and selenium were shown. Changed levels of positive acute-phase proteins, such as caeruloplasmin and haptoglobin, were also observed.  相似文献

Influence of chosen elements on the dynamics of the cariogenic process   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This prospective study comprised 140 natural crowns of the teeth extracted from 31 boys and 35 men, as well as 39 girls and 35 women. They were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of primary teeth and group II consisted of permanent teeth. In each group, two subgroups were distinguished: subgroup A containing teeth without caries and subgroup B comprising carietic teeth. Zinc, iron, copper, nickel, chromium, cobalt, lead, cadmium, selenium, and strontium were determined in the samples by using the total reflection X-ray fluorescence method. Significantly higher concentrations of zinc, iron, copper, nickel, selenium, and strontium were detected in the crowns of healthy primary and permanent teeth than in the crowns of the carietic primary and permanent teeth. The concentrations of chromium, cobalt, lead, and cadmium were significantly higher in primary and permanent teeth with caries than in the healthy ones. Judging from the obtained results, we think that lower concentrations of zinc, iron, copper, nickel, selenium, and strontium together with higher concentrations of chromium, cobalt, lead, and cadmium in the carietic primary and permanent teeth, in relation with the respective concentrations of those elements in healthy teeth, can be one of the caries risk factors.  相似文献

Information about the health risks or the subtle adverse health effects that might be associated with low-level lead exposure on micronutrient metabolism are scarce in the literature. The present work investigated the subtle adverse health effects of exposure to progressively low levels of lead on the metabolism of two micronutrients, copper and zinc in different tissues of the rat. Rats were exposed to 200, 300 and 400 ppm lead in their drinking water for 12 weeks. Lead, copper and zinc concentrations were determined in blood, liver, kidney, heart, spleen and brain of the animals. While the imbalance in zinc metabolism was characterized by a deposition of zinc in the kidney and to a lesser extent in the heart of the animals, imbalance in copper metabolism was characterized by a depletion of blood and splenic copper concentrations as well as renal and cardiac accumulation of copper. Hepatic and brain copper and zinc contents, together with blood zinc were not affected by the 12-week lead exposure. A linear relationship was observed between lead dose and lead accumulation in the spleen, whereas a non-linear relationship was observed between lead dose and lead accumulation in blood, liver, kidney and heart. Our findings indicate that exposure to progressively low-level lead concentrations results in imbalance in copper and zinc in the organism and this might be a factor in propensity toward behavioral disorders observed in lead exposure.  相似文献

Abstract

Lead exposure still represents a matter of health concern especially in Yugoslavia. To assess the exposure of normal urban population to lead and cadmium through food, a preliminary monitoring was performed on a small group of urban population. Lead, cadmium and some essential elements (calcium, zinc, iron, copper and manganese) were analysed in collected duplicate diet samples and compared to similar population in Sweden. We found that dietary exposure to lead and cadmium is similar to other countries although Yugoslav urban population is exposed to much higher concentrations of lead in air than in cities of developed countries, due to high lead in gasoline. However, daily intake of some essential elements was significantly lower.

Also populations living around lead smelters in various parts of Yugoslavia are still exposed to elevated environmental lead and cadmium levels. To assess the exposure of the population living in this area, a cumulative long-term exposure to lead was determined by measuring lead in deciduous teeth. Concentrations of lead and cadmium in vegetables, soil and meals from the same region were also analysed. Values obtained for lead and cadmium in food products grown in exposed and control area were found to be related to respective concentrations of these elements in soil as well as to the distance from the smelter. Meals prepared in this region show the same trend, revealing very high intake particularly of lead.

The influence of nutritional factors, i.e. dietary calcium on lead metabolism, was also studied. Blood lead concentration was determined in two groups of peasant women living in two regions with different dietary calcium intake. Lower blood lead values were found in the higher dietary calcium intake region.  相似文献

Isolates of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis may vary in virulence according to time of in vitro subcultivation. The present study compared the morphology and pathogenicity to hamsters of two P. brasiliensis isolates: one obtained from human lesions and maintained in the laboratory for several years (Pb-18) and the other isolate recovered from hamsters inoculated with organ homogenates from armadillos (Pb-T). The microscopic morphology of Pb-18 and Pb-T showed yeast cells with similar diameter. However, Pb-T produced a significantly higher number of buds per mother cell than Pb-18. Besides, the mycelial form of Pb-T developed abundant sporulation during 8 weeks of culture which was absent in the Pb-18 isolate. Virulence studies demonstrated that mortality rates, antibody levels, fungal load and extent of lesions in the organs were significantly higher in animals infected with Pb-T. The results demonstrated that Pb-T recently isolated from an animal was more virulent than Pb-18. These differences between the two P. brasillensis isolates may be indicators of virulence attenuation in this fungal species. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Cumulative lead exposure in 193 inner-city Black children was evaluated by measuring lead concentrations in the primary dentine and the circumpulpal dentine of their deciduous teeth. The children’s dentine lead levels were comparable to those reported in population studies of low-income children living in inner-city areas. The results of neuropsychological tests administered at age 7 were available for children in the sample; we performed further neuropsychological assessments when their teeth were shed (10–14 yr of age). Higher dentine lead concentrations were associated with deficits in neuropsychological test performance at both testings, with performance abilities more strongly affected than verbal abilities. Moreover, the negative effects of lead on neuropsychological functioning were more evident when lead concentrations in circumpulpal dentine, rather than in primary dentine, was used as the index of lead exposure. Based on this finding, we suggest that circumpulpal dentine and primary dentine should be assayed separately in order to yield a more sensitive estimate of exposure to lead.  相似文献

On the basis of original investigations on zinc, copper, and selenium levels in plasma and erythrocytes of Down's syndrome (DS), cystic fibrosis (CF), and control subjects, the possible importance of erythrocytic trace element concentrations in clinical analysis is emphasized. Red blood cell levels of copper and zinc were found significantly increased in both groups of diseased patients as compared to age-matched controls, although plasma levels did not statistically differ. Plasma selenium levels were significantly lower in both investigated groups, but red blood cell levels were only decreased in CF and were not different from controls in DS. Significant differences were also found between zinc, copper, and selenium levels in erythrocytes of two control groups originating from distinct geographic areas, although plasma levels were not statistically different. Some factors likely to modify trace element concentrations in erythrocytes are examined and a more systematic determination of these levels is suggested for use in clinical analysis.  相似文献

Manganese is an essential dietary nutrient and trace element with important roles in mammalian development, metabolism, and antioxidant defense. In healthy individuals, gastrointestinal absorption and hepatobiliary excretion are tightly regulated to maintain systemic manganese concentrations at physiologic levels. Interactions of manganese with other essential metals following high dose ingestion are incompletely understood. We previously reported that gavage manganese exposure in rats resulted in higher tissue manganese concentrations when compared with equivalent dietary or drinking water manganese exposures. In this study, we performed follow-up evaluations to determine whether oral manganese exposure perturbs iron, copper, or zinc tissue concentrations. Rats were exposed to a control diet with 10 ppm manganese or dietary, drinking water, or gavage exposure to approximately 11.1?mg manganese/kg body weight/day for 7 or 61 exposure days. While manganese exposure affected levels of all metals, particularly in the frontal cortex and liver, copper levels were most prominently affected. This result suggests an under-appreciated effect of manganese exposure on copper homeostasis which may contribute to our understanding of the pathophysiology of manganese toxicity.  相似文献

Interaction between some common genotoxic agents   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The clastogenic effects of arsenic, lead and sulphur dioxide and the protective effect of selenium were studied in short-term lymphocyte cultures. The three agents selected are the major toxic substances in emissions from copper smelters. Cells from non-smoking, healthy individuals were exposed to individual agents and combinations of the four agents (sodium arsenite, lead acetate, sodium sulphite and sodium selenite) and the cells were analysed for chromosome aberrations and sister chromatide exchanges. Selenium showed an antagonistic (protective) effect against the other agents. No synergistic effects were found, and the interactions between arsenic, lead and sulphur dioxide were mainly antagonistic. These rather unexpected findings indicate that mixed exposure from copper smelters, and other mixed exposures where arsenic, lead and sulphur dioxide are involved, may cause less genetic damage than expected and that an adequate dietary supplement of selenium may reduce the genotoxic effects of these agents.  相似文献

The zinc, copper, and manganese status of seven children with malabsorption syndromes of varied etiology (MVE) and 12 with inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) receiving semi-synthetic diets was investigated using serum and hair trace element concentrations, dietary trace element intakes, and anthropometric measurements as the principal indices. The hair zinc levels of both test groups and hair manganese levels of the IEM group were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of their respective healthy controls matched by age, sex, and geographic location, despite comparable dietary zinc and manganese intakes in test and control subjects. Four subjects from the malabsorption and five from the inborn errors group had hair zinc levels below 100 μg/g (range 30–88 μg/g). Of these nine subjects, serum zinc levels were determined for six, and five were less than normal (range 64–74 μg/dL). In contrast, the copper status of the MVE and IEM subjects, as indicated by hair and dietary copper levels, was not lower than the controls. Mean serum copper levels were 136±30 and 171±40 μg/dL for the IEM and MVE groups, respectively. Levels for the MVE subjects were higher than published normal values. The suboptimal zinc and manganese status observed in some of these test subjects probably arose from malabsorption and decreased availability of dietary zinc and manganese. However, the zinc depletion was not severe enough to result in linear growth retardation.  相似文献

Trace elements and melanoma.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Melanoma incidence has been steadily increasing in recent years in most western countries, thus suggesting a role of environmental risk factors. Among these determinants, it has been hypothesized that some trace elements of nutritional and toxicological interest may be implicated in the etiology of the disease. We examined patients with newly diagnosed melanoma of the skin and population controls from the Modena province northern Italy. Clinical and dietary data were collected through questionnaires, and toenails were sampled for trace element determination. Levels of cadmium, chromium, lead, selenium, zinc, copper and iron in toenails were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and by neutron activation analysis. Data obtained from 58 cases and 58 controls indicated higher levels of copper and lower concentrations of iron in melanoma patients, whilst no other differences were seen for the remaining elements. Patterns of correlations of zinc and copper with the estimated intake of some dietary factors were different between cases and controls. Results of the present study suggest that abnormal intake or metabolism of copper and of iron might be implicated in the etiology of melanoma, whilst they do not indicate an involvement of exposure to cadmium, chromium, lead, selenium and zinc in this disease.  相似文献

Collections of Ulva lactuca (Linnaeus) at nine locations along the coast of Ras Beirut, Lebanon were analysed for lead, mercury, phosphate, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc. Low lead concentrations, the same in all samples, could possibly indicate that U. lactuca has some means by which lead uptake and toxicity can be controlled. Phosphate levels may be a contributing factor to this process.Concentrations of all other elements seemed relatively uniform with few exceptions. This suggests that U. lactuca is subject to similar environmental conditions and element exposure at each of the collecting sites and might be capable of maintaining biochemical stability under high levels of stress.Further studies of toxic and nutrient elements as to their individual and combined effects in U. lactuca are needed.c/o Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Attleboro, Massachusetts U.S.A.  相似文献

Potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA) with oxygen as the oxidant has been used to determine soluble zinc and copper levels in exfoliated human teeth (all of which required extraction for orthodontic reasons) and commercial dental materials. The soluble zinc and copper contents of teeth were slightly below the zinc and copper contents in whole teeth reported by other researchers, except in the case of tooth with removed amalgam filling. Soluble zinc and copper concentrations of the dental materials and metal ceramic crowns were 0.50-6.30, and of 2.00-4.30 microg/g, respectively. The results of this work suggest that PSA may be a good method for zinc and copper leaching studies during the investigation of dental prosthetic materials' biocompatibility. Corrosive action of acidic media as evidenced by SEM micrographs caused the leaching of metal ions from teeth.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare bone lead concentrations in cortical and trabecular bones in long-term exposed primary copper and lead smelter workers, and to relate the measured concentrations to the previous lead exposure of the workers. Lead concentrations in seven bones (trabecular: sternum, vertebrae, iliac crest, rib; cortical: femur, left forefinger, and temporal bone) were determined by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry in 32 male, long-term exposed copper and lead smelter workers, and compared with levels in 10 male occupationally unexposed reference persons. A time-integrated blood lead index (cumulative blood lead index, CBLI) was calculated for each worker. The lead levels in the seven studied bones were all significantly higher in active and retired lead workers as compared with the reference group (p相似文献

Trace elements are known to have a key role in myocardial metabolism. The accumulation (cobalt, arsenic, copper) or deficiency (selenium, zinc) of trace elements may be responsible for idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. We investigated the trace element concentrations (Cu, Zn, Mg) in sera from patients with dilated cardiomyopathy by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. We observed that patients with dilated cardiomyopathies have higher copper and lower zinc concentrations in serum than healthy controls. The magnesium concentrations of patients did not differ significantly from that of control subjects.  相似文献
