The knowledge of the plant biomass is very important for the assessment of the rangeland productivity. It could help to select the appropriate species for the improvement of natural ecosystems (rehabilitation, restoration and seedling). By examining different correlations between the biomass production and the volume parameters of two North African shrub species of high range value ( Echiochilon fruticosum Desf. and Helianthemum kahiricum Del.), we aimed to establish the appropriate regression models, which could be useful for the prediction of the productivity of these species. The data showed a significant relationship between the total biomass (TB) production and the mean diameter (MD) of the studied species ( R 2 = 0.65 for Echiochilon and R 2 = 0.75 for Helianthemum ). Likewise, annual fresh production (leaves and current-year shoots) was well correlated with MD of Helianthemum ( R 2 = 0.82). However, the correlation between these two parameters was relatively low for Echiochilon ( R 2 = 0.42).  相似文献

Impact of temperature on food intake and growth in juvenile burbot   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
The effect of temperature on food consumption, food conversion and somatic growth was investigated with juvenile burbot Lota lota (age 0 years). Juvenile burbot showed a significant dome shaped relationship between relative daily food consumption ( C R) and temperature ( T ) with C R = − 0·00044 T 2 + 0·01583 T  − 0·06010; ( n  = 90, r 2 = 0·61). Maximum C R was at 17·9° C (95% CL 17·2–18·6° C). The temperature related instantaneous growth rate ( G ) also followed a dome shaped function with G  = − 0·000063 T 2 + 0·002010 T  − 0·007462; ( n  = 95, r 2 = 0·57), with maximum growth rate at 16·0° C (95% CL 15·3–16·6° C). A significant linear relationship was found between the water temperature and the conversion coefficient ( C C) with C C = − 1·63 T  + 59·04; ( n  = 80, r 2 = 0·74). The results indicate that juvenile burbot in large lakes benefit from higher water temperatures in the littoral zone, by increased food uptake and growth, especially during the warm summer months. Because profundal water temperatures do not reflect the optimal temperature for food consumption in large burbot, temperature is unlikely to be the main proximate factor for the obligate littoral‐profundal migration of juvenile burbot observed in many lake populations.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon salmo salar smolts of wild, hybrid and farmed parentage were individually tagged then reared in a sea cage for 8 months. The fish were sampled three times during this period. On all occasions, farmed Atlantic salmon displayed the highest abundance and density of sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis , whilst no significant differences were observed between hybrid and wild Atlantic salmon. Percentage variation between the lowest and highest infected groups was as high as 175 and 144% for L. salmonis abundance and density respectively (sample 2). The temporal stability of interindividual sea lice infection levels was investigated pair‐wise between samples using correlation (sample 1 v . 2, 1 v . 3 and 2 v . 3). When calculated using sea louse abundance, correlations ranged from r 2 = 0·11, P  < 0·01 to r 2 = 0·39, P  < 0·001, but, when the effects of fish size were controlled for by converting abundance to density, all correlations were <  r 2 = 0·1. Therefore, these data indicate that a fish's relative infection level in one sample was a weak predictor of its relative infection level in another sample. This suggests that identification of individual Atlantic salmon that display reduced susceptibility to sea lice, may be problematic.  相似文献

The effect of feeding level ( F L; 0·5 to 4% dry diet mass per wet fish body mass) and feeding frequency (once every 4 days to twice per day) on postprandial metabolic response was investigated in southern catfish Silurus meridionalis at 27·5° C. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the specific dynamic action (SDA) coefficient among the groups of different feeding levels ( P  > 0·05). The duration increased from 26·0 to 40·0 h and the peak metabolic rate increased from 207·8 to 378·8 mg O2 kg−1 h−1 when the feeding level was increased from 0·5 to 4%. The relationship between the peak metabolic rate ( R P, mg O2 kg−1 h−1) and F L could be described as: R P = 175·4 + 47·3 F L( r 2 = 0·943, n  = 40, P  < 0·001). The relationship between the SDA duration ( D , h) and F L could be described as D =30·97 F L0·248 ( r 2=0·729, n =40, P  < 0·001).  相似文献

We manipulated the number of saprotrophic fungi in either a complex multi-resource substratum (sterilized forest soil), or a single-resource substratum (powdered cellulose). The substrates were inoculated with five common species of soil fungi in all possible combinations (from monocultures to five species in combination). In both substrates, the rate of organic matter decomposition was positively associated with species richness. The effect of fungal diversity was much stronger in the uniform single-resource substrate ( r 2 = 0.455, P  < 0.0001) than in soil ( r 2 = 0.154, P  < 0.0001). The results document that species richness of microbial decomposers strongly affects decomposition processes, at least at the species poor end of the diversity gradient. Both, 'sampling effect' and 'species complementarity effect' contributed to the community response with the latter being much more pronounced in uniform substrate than in soil. This indicates that facilitative interactions are more important than resource partitioning for positive effects of species richness.  相似文献

Aim  To investigate the relationships between bird species richness derived from the North American Breeding Bird Survey and estimates of the average, minimum, and the seasonal variation in canopy light absorbance (the fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation, fPAR) derived from NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS).
Location  Continental USA.
Methods  We describe and apply a 'dynamic habitat index' (DHI), which incorporates three components based on monthly measures of canopy light absorbance through the year. The three components are the annual sum, the minimum, and the seasonal variation in monthly fPAR, acquired at a spatial resolution of 1 km, over a 6-year period (2000–05). The capacity of these three DHI components to predict bird species richness across 84 defined ecoregions was assessed using regression models.
Results  Total bird species richness showed the highest correlation with the composite DHI [ R 2 = 0.88, P  < 0.001, standard error of estimate (SE) = 8 species], followed by canopy nesters ( R 2 = 0.79, P  < 0.001, SE = 3 species) and grassland species ( R 2 = 0.74, P  < 0.001, SE = 1 species). Overall, the seasonal variation in fPAR, compared with the annual average fPAR, and its spatial variation across the landscape, were the components that accounted for most ( R 2 = 0.55–0.88) of the observed variation in bird species richness.
Main conclusions  The strong relationship between the DHI and observed avian biodiversity suggests that seasonal and interannual variation in remotely sensed fPAR can provide an effective tool for predicting patterns of avian species richness at regional and broader scales, across the conterminous USA.  相似文献

European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus , with total lengths ranging from 40·0 to 132·5 mm, were sampled during October 2002 and May 2003 in the northern Adriatic Sea in order to estimate their energy densities ( E D). The relationship in geographical distribution and morphological variation of leaflet width and length (diagnostic trait), between and within populations of Dioon edule Lindl., has been investigated throughout its known range in eastern Mexico (from the states of Nuevo León to Veracruz, north to south, respectively). A total of 1832 leaflets were measured for width and length from 154 plants distributed amongst five populations using four leaflet replicas from each of three leaves per plant. For leaflet width and length the variation among populations indicated significant stat-istical differences ( F 4,147 = 125.83; P  < 0.0001; R 2 = 92.17% and F 4,147 = 9.04; P  < 0.001; R 2 = 26.8%), respectively. With respect to leaflet width, the multiple range test showed three groups with a north to south distributional relationship along the range of the species. The correlation coefficient among paired populations, respect to geographical distance and the absolute value of the mean difference of leaflet width in each population, was positive, and different from zero ( r  = 0.82; P  = 0.013). Aim  We test the 'energetic equivalence rule' (EER) – the idea that the amount of energy used by a population per unit area per unit time is independent of body mass – in meio-invertebrate communities from a series of natural, multitrophic aquatic 'rock pool' microcosms. Our study represents the first rigorous test of the EER at local scales of observation in a community of naturally coexisting species.
Location  Discovery Bay, Jamaica.
Method  We estimated population energy use (PEU) for every occurrence of every species of meio-invertebrate fauna found in each of 29 microcosms (233 observations of 31 species) using estimates of population density obtained in January 2005 in combination with published metabolism–mass relations for closely related taxa.
Results  In the rock pool system as a whole, population density decreased ( ancova : b  = –0.38 (–0.55 to –0.19), r 2 = 0.19, P  < 0.001) and PEU increased with body mass ( ancova : b  = 0.55 (0.36–0.73), r 2 = 0.28, P  < 0.001).
Main conclusions  The positive PEU–body mass relation found here suggests that larger organisms are energetically dominant and points to the importance of size-structured competition in these systems. Our results contrast those obtained in the few other previously published tests of the EER and challenge the idea that all species use similar amounts of energy regardless of their size.  相似文献

Hydraulic conductance of leaves ( K leaf) typically decreases with increasing water stress. However, the extent to which the decrease in K leaf is due to xylem cavitation, conduit deformation or changes in the extra-xylary pathway is unclear. We measured K leaf concurrently with ultrasonic acoustic emission (UAE) in dehydrating leaves of two vessel-bearing and two tracheid-bearing species to determine whether declining K leaf was associated with an accumulation of cavitation events. In addition, images of leaf internal structure were captured using cryo-scanning electron microscopy, which allowed detection of empty versus full and also deformed conduits. Overall, K leaf decreased as leaf water potentials ( Ψ L) became more negative. Values of K leaf corresponding to bulk leaf turgor loss points ranged from 13 to 45% of their maximum. Additionally, Ψ L corresponding to a 50% loss in conductivity and 50% accumulated UAE ranged from −1.5 to −2.4 MPa and from −1.1 to −2.8 MPa, respectively, across species. Decreases in K leaf were closely associated with accumulated UAE and the percentage of empty conduits. The mean amplitude of UAEs was tightly correlated with mean conduit diameter ( R 2 = 0.94, P  = 0.018). These results suggest that water stress-induced decreases in K leaf in these species are directly related to xylem embolism.  相似文献

Abstract: Qualitative or semi-quantitative visual assessments are most often used for estimating population size of herbivorous insects. The precision of these estimates, however, is often difficult to establish. A 'simulation game' with the horse chestnut leafminer, Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic (Lep., Gracillariidae) shows that visual, semi-quantitative assessments can provide accurate information. Damaged areas of 411 horse chestnut leaves collected in 100 sites were closely related to mine numbers despite some variability in mine and leaf size ( R 2 = 0.915; n  = 411; P < 0.001). On the basis of this relationship, two methods of population assessment are compared: (i) digital image processing of leaf damage and (ii) visual assessment using a damage key reflecting the relative infested area on each leaf (0, 0%; 1, 0–2%; 2, 2–5%; 3, 5–10%; 4, 10–25%; 5, 25–50%; 6, 50–75%; 7, 75–100%). Both methods used to estimate damage presented a similar, close relationship to the 'real' numbers of mines ( R 2 = 0.858; n  = 777; P < 0.001 for image processing and R 2 = 0.905; n  = 777; P < 0.001 for visual assessment). The potential of using visual assessments as an accurate and fast method in situ at the tree scale is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract The effect of lucerne flea, Sminthurus viridis , on plant growth (stem length and leaf number) and damage (percentage of leaves damaged and the percentage reduction in leaf area in the top, mid and lower thirds of stems) was considered at 2-weekly intervals in three consecutive lucerne growth cycles, each with a different mode of attack. The data were analysed to progressively determine relationships leading to a proposal for plant-based thresholds for lucerne flea control. Lucerne flea affected each factor measured, with damage considered more appropriate for making control decisions than plant growth. Damage increased from the base of plants upwards and its effect on yield was carried over into subsequent growth cycles. Damage was significantly related to lucerne flea numbers ( P  < 0.001) in two growth cycles and was higher when large nymphs or adults were dominant in one of these cycles. Yield was closely and best related to the percentage of the total number of leaves damaged ( R 2 = 81.3%). The percentage of leaves damaged was also related to loss of final yield estimated at 2 ( R 2 = 81.3%), 4 ( R 2 = 78.9%) and 6 ( R 2 = 66.6%) weeks into the first growth cycle only. Direct damage in the other two cycles did not result in yield loss. The percentage of leaves damaged (± confidence intervals) equating to 5% increments in yield loss were estimated at 2, 4 and 6 weeks into the first growth cycle. These are proposed as damage or treatment thresholds for testing.  相似文献

Aims:  The potential of using flow cytometry (FC) in combination with a fluorescent dye (SYBR green-I) for rapidly estimating Mycoplasma mycoides subSPS. mycoides large-colony type (MmmLC) in broth culture was examined.
Methods and Results:  The FC analysis was performed by staining the MmmLC cells with a fluorescent dye, SYBR green-I (SYBR), and the results were compared with plate count method (colony forming units, – CFUs). There was a good correlation (linear regression, r 2 = 0·93) between mycoplasma counts determined by FC (cells ml−1) and by traditional plate count method (CFU ml−1). The lowest bacterial concentration detected by FC and traditional plate count was of the order of 104 cells ml−1 and 103 CFU ml−1, respectively. FC method allowed results in 20–30 min, whereas at least 24 h were necessary to obtain results with the traditional plate count method (CFU).
Conclusion:  Growth rates of MmmLC in broth medium determined by FC were highly reproducible and correlated well with mycoplasma counts assessed by the plate count method.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  These findings suggest that FC could be a good alternative to replace other time-consuming techniques that are currently used to enumerate mycoplasma in broth medium, such as plate count method (CFU).  相似文献

Recent studies have indicated that the serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] 1E receptor, originally discovered in human brain tissue, is not expressed in rat or mouse brain. Thus, there have been few reports on 5-HT1E receptor drug development. However, expression of 5-HT1E receptor mRNA has been shown in guinea pig brain. To establish this species as an animal model for 5-HT1E drug development, we identified brain regions that exhibit 5-carboxyamidotryptamine, ritanserin, and LY344864 – insensitive [3H]5-HT binding (characteristic of the 5-HT1E receptor). In hippocampal homogenates, where 5-HT1E receptor density was sufficiently high for radioligand binding analysis, 100 nM 5-carboxyamidotryptamine, 30 nM ritanserin, and 100 nM LY344864 were used to mask [3H]5-HT binding at non-5-HT1E receptors. The K d of [3H]5-HT was 5.7 ± 0.7 nM and is indistinguishable from the cloned receptor K d of 6.5 ± 0.6 nM. The affinities of 16 drugs for the cloned and hippocampal-expressed guinea pig 5-HT1E receptors are essentially identical ( R 2 = 0.97). These findings indicate that using these conditions autoradiographical distribution and signal transduction studies of the 5-HT1E receptor in guinea pig brain are feasible. Using the guinea pig as an animal model should provide important insights into possible functions of this receptor and the therapeutic potential of selective human 5-HT1E drugs.  相似文献

To evaluate the reproductive cycle and fecundity of tucunaré ( Cichla kelberi Kullander & Ferreira, 2006), 697 specimens were captured in Três Marias Reservoir, São Francisco River, Brazil during 1994–1995 and 2005–2006. Reproductive activity was recorded throughout the sampling periods, with females exhibiting asynchronous oocyte development and multiple spawnings with a peak in September–October. Vitellogenic oocytes of the tucunaré were elliptical in shape with the longest diameter approximately 1230 μm and the shortest 700 μm, yolk globules with ellipsoid inclusions, lipid vesicles, small cortical alveoli and thin zona radiata (9.3 ± 2.0 μm thickness). Follicular cells were prisma-shaped (49.0 ± 16.4 μm) in the vegetative pole, progressively becoming cubic cells in the animal pole toward the micropyle. Histochemical analyses indicated the presence of mucosubstances in the outer zona radiata and follicular cells that could be contributors to egg adhesiveness. Batch fecundity ranged from 4450 to 13 900 oocytes for females 31.5–43.5 cm total length, respectively, and correlated to gonadal weight ( r 2 = 0.80) and body weight ( r 2 = 0.70). Mean relative fecundity was 10.6 vitellogenic oocytes per gram body weight. As tucunaré is an exotic piscivorous species well-adapted to the Três Marias Reservoir, the present work may be considered a contribution toward future strategies for population control.  相似文献

Changes in the extent of P700 oxidation (P700+) were investigated after chilling of barley, rice, pumpkin, and cucumber leaf segments at 4°C for 1 h under light with various photon flux densities. At 50 µmol photons m−2 s−1, the decrease in P700+ was observed only in cucumber, but at 150 µmol photons m−2 s−1, it was found in all plants except barley, revealing their expected chilling sensitivities. However, the decrease in P700+ by this short-term chilling was reversible in the presence of 3-(3',4'-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea or methyl viologen, and it did not show any causal relationship with the decrease in the electron transfer rate nor with the down-regulation of photosystem II through the accumulation of zeaxanthin and the development of non-photochemical quenching. These results led to the suggestion that photosystem I (PSI) acceptor side limitation is a prerequisite for the decrease of P700+. Furthermore, PSI acceptor side limitation could be mainly due to limitation of electron-sink pathways such as CO2 assimilation and ascorbate–glutathione cycle, because treatment with glycolaldehyde which inhibits the former pathway, and with KCN which inhibits both pathways, decreased P700+ by 20–30% in barley leaves after chilling in the light.  相似文献

Membrane-bound [NiFe]-hydrogenase from Hydrogenophaga sp. AH-24 was purified to homogeneity. The molecular weight was estimated as 100±10 kDa, consisting of two different subunits (62 and 37 kDa). The optimal pH values for H2 oxidation and evolution were 8.0 and 4.0, respectively, and the activity ratio (H2 oxidation/H2 evolution) was 1.61 × 102 at pH 7.0. The optimal temperature was 75 °C. The enzyme was quite stable under air atmosphere (the half-life of activity was c . 48 h at 4 °C), which should be important to function in the aerobic habitat of the strain. The enzyme showed high thermal stability under anaerobic conditions, which retained full activity for over 5 h at 50 °C. The activity increased up to 2.5-fold during incubation at 50 °C under H2. Using methylene blue as an electron acceptor, the kinetic constants of the purified membrane-bound homogenase (MBH) were V max=336 U mg−1, k cat=560 s−1, and k cat/ K m=2.24 × 107 M−1 s−1. The MBH exhibited prominent electron paramagnetic resonance signals originating from [3Fe–4S]+ and [4Fe–4S]+ clusters. On the other hand, signals originating from Ni of the active center were very weak, as observed in other oxygen-stable hydrogenases from aerobic H2-oxidizing bacteria. This is the first report of catalytic and biochemical characterization of the respiratory MBH from Hydrogenophaga .  相似文献

Resting spore formation of some aphid-pathogenic Entomophthorales is important for the seasonal pattern of their prevalence and survival but this process is poorly understood. To explore the possible mechanism involved in the process, Pandora nouryi (obligate aphid pathogen) interacted with green peach aphid Myzus persicae on cabbage leaves under favourable conditions. Host nymphs showered with primary conidia of an isolate (LC50: 0.9–6.7 conidia mm−2 4–7 days post shower) from air captures in the low-latitude plateau of China produced resting spores (azygospores), primary conidia or both spore types. Surprisingly, the proportion of mycosed cadavers forming resting spores ( P cfrs ) increased sharply within the concentrations ( C ) of 28–240 conidia mm−2, retained high levels at 240–1760, but was zero or extremely low at 0.3–16. The P cfrs – C relationship fit well the logistic equation P cfrs  = 0.6774/[1 + exp(3.1229–0.0270 C )] ( r 2 = 0.975). This clarified for the first time the dependence of in vivo resting spore formation of P. nouryi upon the concentration of infective inoculum. A hypothesis is thus proposed that some sort of biochemical signals may exist in the host–pathogen interaction so that the fungal pathogen perceives the signals for prompt response to forthcoming host-density changes by either producing conidia for infecting available hosts or forming resting spores for surviving host absence in situ .  相似文献

This was a preliminary investigation to define the conditions of colonization of a human skin equivalent (SE) model with cutaneous microorganisms. SEs of 24 mm diameter were constructed with a dermal matrix of fibrin containing fibroblasts and a stratified epidermis. Microbial colonization of the SEs was carried out in a dry environment, comparable to ' in vivo ' skin, using a blotting technique to remove inoculation fluid. The microbial communities were sampled by scrub washing and viable cells enumerated on selective growth medium. Staphylococcus epidermidis , Propionibacterium acnes and Malassezia furfur (human skin commensals) and Staphylococcus aureus (transient pathogen) were colonized at inoculum densities of 102–106 CFU SE−1 on the surface of replicate SEs. Growth of all species was supported for upto 72–120 h, with recovery densities of between 104–109 CFU SE−1. A novel, real-time growth monitoring method was also developed, using S. aureus containing a lux cassette. Light output increased from 20 to 95 h, and colonization increased from 102 to 108 CFU SE−1, as confirmed by conventional recovery. Thus, the SE model has potential to investigate interactions between resident and transient microbial communities with themselves and their habitat, and for testing treatments to control pathogen colonization of human skin.  相似文献
