Activity patterns of the suprahyoid muscles were examined using a new analytical technique. The suprahyoid activities were recorded during swallowing of tasteless foods and foods with taste qualities (sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami). The technique involved: (1) division of cumulative integrated suprahyoid activities from each swallow into 10 equal sections and (2) assignment of individually sectioned activities to a standardized timescale as TP (from T10To T100; relative time for P% of the cumulative electromyogram) to enable comparison of data from different trials. Three significant differences were found in T p between the following foods: tasteless and sour, tasteless and bitter, and sour and umami. However, the differences were not repeatedly confirmed. These results suggest that gustatory signals from food tastes affect differentially the activity patterns of the suprahyoid muscles during pharyngeal swallowing, although the effect is not permanent. This method may be used to measure taste impressions in infants and in certain disabled subjects.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of food texture and viscosity on the swallowing function by measuring tongue pressure and performing a videofluorographic (VF) examination. Eleven normal adults were recruited for this study. Test foods with different consistencies and liquid contents, i.e., a half-solid nutrient made of 0.8 and 1.5% agar powder, syrup, and a liquid containing 40 wt/vol% barium sulfate, were swallowed, and the anterior (AT) and posterior tongue pressures (PT) and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the suprahyoid muscles were recorded, together with VF images. The timing of each event obtained from EMG, tongue pressure, and VF recordings was measured and then compared. We found that the AT and PT activity patterns were similar and showed a single peak. The peak, area, and time duration of all of the variables for AT and PT and EMG burst increased with increasing hardness of the bolus. The onset of the EMG burst always preceded those of the AT and PT activities, while there were no significant differences in peak and offset times among EMG burst, AT, and PT. Total swallowing time and oral ejection time were significantly longer during the swallowing of 1.5% agar than any other boluses, while pharyngeal transit time and clearance time were significantly longer during the swallowing of syrup, which was as hard as the liquid, but showed a higher viscosity than the liquid. The results suggested that the major effects of food hardness were to delay oral ejection time, which strongly delays total swallowing time. In addition, pharyngeal bolus transit is not dependent on the hardness of food but on its viscosity.  相似文献

1. The objective was to identify the factors driving spatial and temporal variation in annual production (PA) and turnover (production/biomass) ratio (P/BA) of resident brown trout Salmo trutta in tributaries of the Rio Esva (Cantabrian Mountains, Asturias, north‐western Spain). We examined annual production (total production of all age‐classes over a year) (PA) and turnover (P/BA) ratios, in relation to year‐class production (production over the entire life time of a year‐class) (PT) and turnover (P/BT) ratio, over 14 years at a total of 12 sites along the length of four contrasting tributaries. In addition, we explored whether the importance of recruitment and site depth for spatial and temporal variations in year‐class production (PT), elucidated in previous studies, extends to annual production. 2. Large spatial (among sites) and temporal (among years) variation in annual production (range 1.9–40.3 g m?2 per year) and P/BA ratio (range 0.76–2.4 per year) typified these populations, values reported here including all the variation reported globally for salmonids streams inhabited by one or several species. 3. Despite substantial differences among streams and sites in all production attributes, when all data were pooled, annual (PA) and year‐class production (PT) and annual (P/BA) and year‐class P/BT ratios were tightly linked. Annual (PA) and year‐class production (PT) were similar but not identical, i.e. PT = 0.94 PA, whereas the P/BT ratios were 4 + P/BA ratios. 4. Recruitment (Rc) and mean annual density (NA) were major density‐dependent drivers of production and their relationships were described by simple mathematical models. While year‐class production (PT) was determined (R2 = 70.1%) by recruitment (Rc), annual production (PA) was determined (R2 = 60.3%) by mean annual density (NA). In turn, variation in recruitment explained R2 = 55.2% of variation in year‐class P/BT ratios, the latter attaining an asymptote at P/BT = 6 at progressively higher levels of recruitment. Similarly, variations in mean annual density (NA) explained R2 = 52.1% of variation in annual P/BA, the latter reaching an asymptote at P/BA = 2.1. This explained why P/BT is equal to P/BA plus the number of year‐classes at high but not at low densities. 5. Site depth was a major determinant of spatial (among sites) variation in production attributes. All these attributes described two‐phase trajectories with site depth, reaching a maximum at sites of intermediate depth and declining at shallower and deeper sites. As a consequence, at sites where recruitment and mean annual density reached minimum or maximum values, annual (PA) and year‐class production (PT) and annual (P/BA) and year‐class P/BT ratios also reached minimum and maximum values.  相似文献

A standardized single‐stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) procedure is proposed as an alternative to the time‐consuming biological characterization of Barley yellow dwarf virus‐PAV (BYDV‐PAV) isolates. Using this procedure, six of 21 overlapping regions used to scan the viral genome gave patterns specific to ‘4E’ (avirulent) or ‘4T’ (‘4E’‐derived virulent) isolates. The calibration of samples and integration of SSCP patterns corresponding to the nucleotide region 1482–2023 allowed the estimation of PT values that reflect the proportions of a ‘4T’‐specific band. Analysis of the biological (area under the pathogen progress curve) and molecular (PT) data suggested a positive linear relation between these variables. Moreover, sequence analysis of the nucleotide region 1482–2023 highlighted the presence of a nucleotide polymorphism (C/A1835) which can be considered as a candidate for virus–host interactions linked to the monitored virulence. According to these parameters, PT values associated with ‘4E’‐ and ‘4T’‐derived populations show that: (i) long‐term infection of a BYDV‐PAV isolate on the ‘TC14’ resistant host leads to the fixation of virulent individuals in viral populations; and (ii) the introduction of susceptible hosts in successive ‘TC14’ infections results in the maintenance of low virulence of the populations. Thus, the presented study demonstrates that SSCP is a useful tool for monitoring viral populations during the host adaptation process. The described impact of host alternation provides new opportunities for the use of the ‘TC14’ resistance source in BYDV‐resistant breeding programmes. This study is part of the global effort made by the scientific community to propose sustainable alternatives to the chemical control of this viral disease.  相似文献

The sternohyoid (SH) and geniohyoid (GH) are antagonist strap muscles that are active during a number of different behaviors, including sucking, intraoral transport, swallowing, breathing, and extension/flexion of the neck. Because these muscles have served different functions through the evolutionary history of vertebrates, it is quite likely they will have complex patterns of electrical activity and muscle fiber contraction. Different regions of the SH exhibit different contraction and activity patterns during a swallow. We examined the dynamics of the SH and GH muscles during an unrestrained, and vigorous head shaking behavior in an animal model of human head, neck, and hyolingual movement. A gentle touch to infant pig ears elicited a head shake of several revolutions. Using sonomicrometry and intramuscular EMG, we measured regional (within) muscle strain and activity in SH and GH. We found that EMG was consistent across three regions (anterior, belly, and posterior) of each muscle. Changes in muscle length, however, were more complex. In the SH, mid-belly length-change occurred out-of-phase with the anterior and posterior end regions, but with a zero lag timing; the anterior region shortened before the posterior. In the GH, the anterior region shortened before and out-of-phase with the mid-belly and posterior regions. Head shaking is a relatively simple reflex behavior, yet the underlying patterns of muscle length dynamics and EMG activity are not. The regional complexity in SH and GH, similar to regionalization of SH during swallowing, suggests that these anatomically simple hyoid strap muscles have more complex function than textbooks often suggest.  相似文献

The study aims at correlations between ultrastructure of rhizodermal membranes and ATPase activities of two gramineous C4-species effected by salinization of the growth medium. Comparative investigations were done with drought-resistant Sorghum and drought-sensitive, salt tolerant Spartina plants grown under steady-state conditions without or with 40 mol m?3 NaCl. Both species sustained this treatment and showed marked influences of salt on growth but not on root respiration. Generally, the intramembraneous particle (IMP) frequencies, found on freeze-fracture replicates of rhizodermal plasmic fracture faces of the plasmalemma (PPF) and tonoplast (TPF), were higher in Sorghum than in Spartina. NaCl leads in both species to an increase of the rhizodermal IMP frequency in the TPF (~150%) and PPF (~120%). The activities of T- and P-ATPase were determined for membrane vesicles from crude extracts and from isolated protoplasts of roots, respectively; the results from both preparations were the same. The vanadate-sensitive tissue ATPase activities increased under salt stress ~ 5 times in Sorghum and ~ 2 times in Spartina whilst the nitrate and azide-sensitive tissue ATPase activities increased ~ 6 times only in Sorghum. The combination of the results from the membrane fine structures with the biochemical tests points out that salt-effected increases of ATPase activities of Sorghum roots were ~4 times higher than the increases of IMP frequencies on rhizodermal membranes; in Spartina this effect is less intense. It is concluded that a salty environment leads to a higher ATPase activity per IMP in both species. The stronger reaction of Sorghum is explainable by the increase in K+/Na+ selectivity of the plasma membrane under salt stress. This is not the case for Spartina because the roots of this species include salt which subsequently is sequestered by the salt glands of the leaves.  相似文献

Infant suckling is a complex behavior that includes cycles of rhythmic sucking as well as intermittent swallows. This behavior has three cycle types: 1) suck cycles, when milk is obtained from the teat and moved posteriorly into the valleculae in the oropharynx; 2) suck-swallow cycles, which include both a rhythmic suck and a pharyngeal swallow, where milk is moved out of the valleculae, past the larynx, and into the esophagus; and 3) postswallow suck cycles, immediately following the suck-swallow cycles. Because muscles controlling these behaviors are active in all three types of cycles, we tested the hypothesis that different patterns of electromyographic (EMG) activity in the mylohyoid, hyoglossus, stylohyoid, and thyrohyoid muscles of the pig characterized each cycle type. Anterior mylohyoid EMG activity occurred regularly in every cycle and was used as a cycle marker. Thyrohyoid activity, indicating the pharyngeal swallow, was immediately preceded by increased stylohyoid and hyoglossus activity; it divided the suck-swallow cycle into two phases. Timed from the onset of the suck-swallow cycle, the first phase had a relatively fixed duration while the duration of the second phase, timed from the thyrohyoid, varied directly with cycle duration. In short-duration cycles, the second phase could have a zero duration so that thyrohyoid activity extended into the postswallow cycle. In such cycles, all swallowing activity that occurred after the thyrohyoid EMG and was associated with bolus passage through the pharynx fell into the postswallow cycle. These data suggest that while the activity of some muscles, innervated by trigeminal and cervical plexus nerves, may be time locked to the cycle onset in swallowing, the cycle period itself is not. The postswallow cycle consequently contains variable amounts of pharyngeal swallowing EMG activity. The results exemplify the complexity of the relationship between rhythmic sucking and the swallow.  相似文献

Arctic vegetation is characterized by high spatial variability in plant functional type (PFT) composition and gross primary productivity (P). Despite this variability, the two main drivers of P in sub‐Arctic tundra are leaf area index (LT) and total foliar nitrogen (NT). LT and NT have been shown to be tightly coupled across PFTs in sub‐Arctic tundra vegetation, which simplifies up‐scaling by allowing quantification of the main drivers of P from remotely sensed LT. Our objective was to test the LTNT relationship across multiple Arctic latitudes and to assess LT as a predictor of P for the pan‐Arctic. Including PFT‐specific parameters in models of LTNT coupling provided only incremental improvements in model fit, but significant improvements were gained from including site‐specific parameters. The degree of curvature in the LTNT relationship, controlled by a fitted canopy nitrogen extinction co‐efficient, was negatively related to average levels of diffuse radiation at a site. This is consistent with theoretical predictions of more uniform vertical canopy N distributions under diffuse light conditions. Higher latitude sites had higher average leaf N content by mass (NM), and we show for the first time that LTNT coupling is achieved across latitudes via canopy‐scale trade‐offs between NM and leaf mass per unit leaf area (LM). Site‐specific parameters provided small but significant improvements in models of P based on LT and moss cover. Our results suggest that differences in LTNT coupling between sites could be used to improve pan‐Arctic models of P and we provide unique evidence that prevailing radiation conditions can significantly affect N allocation over regional scales.  相似文献

High‐temperature tolerance in plants is important in a warming world, with extreme heat waves predicted to increase in frequency and duration, potentially leading to lethal heating of leaves. Global patterns of high‐temperature tolerance are documented in animals, but generally not in plants, limiting our ability to assess risks associated with climate warming. To assess whether there are global patterns in high‐temperature tolerance of leaf metabolism, we quantified Tcrit (high temperature where minimal chlorophyll a fluorescence rises rapidly and thus photosystem II is disrupted) and Tmax (temperature where leaf respiration in darkness is maximal, beyond which respiratory function rapidly declines) in upper canopy leaves of 218 plant species spanning seven biomes. Mean site‐based Tcrit values ranged from 41.5 °C in the Alaskan arctic to 50.8 °C in lowland tropical rainforests of Peruvian Amazon. For Tmax, the equivalent values were 51.0 and 60.6 °C in the Arctic and Amazon, respectively. Tcrit and Tmax followed similar biogeographic patterns, increasing linearly (?8 °C) from polar to equatorial regions. Such increases in high‐temperature tolerance are much less than expected based on the 20 °C span in high‐temperature extremes across the globe. Moreover, with only modest high‐temperature tolerance despite high summer temperature extremes, species in mid‐latitude (~20–50°) regions have the narrowest thermal safety margins in upper canopy leaves; these regions are at the greatest risk of damage due to extreme heat‐wave events, especially under conditions when leaf temperatures are further elevated by a lack of transpirational cooling. Using predicted heat‐wave events for 2050 and accounting for possible thermal acclimation of Tcrit and Tmax, we also found that these safety margins could shrink in a warmer world, as rising temperatures are likely to exceed thermal tolerance limits. Thus, increasing numbers of species in many biomes may be at risk as heat‐wave events become more severe with climate change.  相似文献

The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters, spin-lattice (T1), and spin-spin (T2) relaxation time, are usually longer for neoplastic cells than for normal cells of the same cell type. This has generally been true at low NMR frequencies (≤100 MHz) when comparisons have been made between normal and neoplastic cells that have both spent a short time in culture. We have previously demonstrated that although the T1 values of paired normal and neoplastic Syrian hamster (SH) fibroblastic cells in culture are not significantly different when measured at 300 MHz, the 300 MHz T2 values for the neoplastic cells are smaller than those of the normal cells. (Xin et al. (1986),Cell Biophysics 8, 213.) Since treatment of normal diploid cells with polypeptide growth factors or tumor promoters frequently results in reversible expression of neoplasia-associated phenotypes, T1 and T2 were obtained at 300 MHz for treated and untreated SH cells to see if these compounds could also produce smaller 300 MHz T2 values. Secondary culture SH fetal fibroblast cells were treated with epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), phorbol-12,13-didecanoate (PDD) and 4-α-phorbol-12,13-didecanoate (4αPDD). Treatment with either growth factor resulted in smaller T2 values, but a statistically significant decrease was not observed for PDD or 4αPDD. The observed reductions in T2 values were correlated with the morphological and growth-stimulatory effects of these compounds on the cells.  相似文献

For the triangle, duo‐trio, same‐different and 2‐AFC methods, using a model system, mean d′ values for the same subjects, discriminating between the same taste stimuli, were not significantly different. This confirmed the postulated cognitive strategies used for these methods in their respective Thurstonian/signal detection models. Introduction of perceptual variance as a result of the effects of sequences of tasting within a test, forgetting stimulus perceptions and τcriterion variation resulted in the 2‐AFC eliciting a significantly higher d′ than the other three methods. Yet, after a warm‐up procedure, which not only significantly increased values of d′ for all methods but also aligned subjects' τcriteria, the same‐different test had a d′ comparable to that of the 2‐AFC, while both d′ values were significantly higher than those of the triangle and duo‐trio. This suggested that effects of memory were more important those of sequence of tasting.  相似文献

During scientific surveys on the continental slopes north‐west of Spitsbergen and off north‐east Greenland (c. 600 and 1000 m depths), two female Arctic skates Amblyraja hyperborea were caught while swallowing extraordinary large individuals of glacial eelpout Lycodes frigidus. The total length (LT) of the prey constituted 50 and 80% of the LT of the skates, which reveal that A. hyperborea are capable predators of fishes of surprisingly large relative size.  相似文献

1. The near‐surface distribution of phytoplankton cells along the thalweg of a canyon‐shaped reservoir (El Gergal, southern Spain) during two surveys is described and interpreted as the result of time‐varying large‐scale circulation patterns, vertical mixing processes and the physiological capacity of algal cells to regulate its position in the water column. 2. Vertical gradients of chlorophyll‐a concentration developed in the water column during the day but disappeared at night, as a result of the shoaling and deepening of the diurnal mixed layer (dml). The changes in the depth of the dml are largely controlled in El Gergal by convectively driven mixing processes. The longitudinal circulation changes, in turn, as a result of weak and diurnal land‐sea breezes. The distribution of algal cells was patchy at all times but did not change during any of the surveys. 3. An expression is proposed to estimate time scales for the development of horizontal patchiness TP based on simple concepts of transport. It is shown that TP is in the order of a week, indicating that horizontal patchiness does not respond immediately to hourly changes in the controlling factors. The magnitude of TP, though, depends on how the vertical distribution of chlorophyll‐a and longitudinal currents change on subdiurnal time scales. In particular, TP is sensitive to the lag existing between the momentum and heat fluxes through the free surface, driving circulation and vertical mixing.  相似文献

The activity patterns and substratum selection for foraging of checkered snapper Lutjanus decussatus were observed. The foraging rate of small‐sized individuals (<150 mm in total length, LT) was significantly greater than that of large‐sized individuals (≥150 mm LT). There was significant positive use of live branching corals, whereas negative use of coral rubble, rocks and sand for both small‐sized and large‐sized individuals.  相似文献

Site‐specific 19F chemical shift and side chain relaxation analysis can be applied on large size proteins. Here, one‐dimensional 19F spectra and T1, T2 relaxation data were acquired on a SH3 domain in aqueous buffer containing 60% glycerol, and a nine‐transmembrane helices membrane protein diacyl‐glycerol kinase (DAGK) in dodecyl phosphochoine (DPC) micelles. The high quality of the data indicates that this method can be applied to site‐specifically analyze side chain internal mobility of membrane proteins or large size proteins.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate the influence of maximal bite force, maximal tongue pressure, number of mastications and swallowing on the oro‐pharyngeal residue in the elderly. Background: Oro‐pharyngeal residue in the elderly is an indication of dysphagia. Pharyngeal residue is especially critical as it may cause aspiration pneumonia, which is one of the major causes of death in elderly. Materials and methods: Videofluorographic recordings were performed on 14 elderly volunteers (six males, eight females, age range 65–93 years) without any history or symptoms of dysphagia. The subjects were instructed to consume 9 g of barium containing bread in two manners; free mastication and swallow (FMS: masticate and swallow freely), and limited mastication and swallow (LMS: swallow once after 30 chewing actions). The amount of oral and pharyngeal residue was evaluated using a 4‐point rating scale. Maximal occlusal force was measured by a pressure sensitive sheet, and maximal tongue pressure using a handy probe. Multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the influence of these items on the amount of oral and pharyngeal residue in FMS and LMS. Results: In FMS, age was found to be a factor which increased oral residue (p = 0.053), and the number of swallowing (p = 0.017) and the state of the prosthesis (p = 0.030) reduced the pharyngeal residue. In LMS, tongue pressure was a factor which reduced oral residue (p = 0.015) and increased pharyngeal residue (p = 0.008). Conclusion: It is suggested that in the elderly tongue pressure contributed to propulsion of the food bolus from oral cavity into the pharynx, and multiple swallowing contributed to the reduction in the amount of pharyngeal residue.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression patterns of IGF2 and IMP3 in osteosarcoma as well as its relationship with angiogenesis in the tumor. IGF2 and IMP3 expression was detected by immunohistochemical staining in the serial sections of the osteosarcoma. The impacts of IGF2 and IMP3 expression patterns on tumor angiogenesis were evaluated by statistics. The IGF2 and IMP3 staining had different expression patterns in different osteosarcoma. Twelve out of the sixty-four cases of conventional osteosarcoma showed nuclear staining patterns, and twenty-nine showed cytoplasmic staining of IGF2 and IMP3 simultaneously. On the other hand, fourteen cases showed nuclear IGF2 staining but cytoplasmic IMP3 expression, and nine cases showed nuclear IMP3 staining and cytoplasmic IGF2 expression. Twenty-eight out of forty-seven cases of parosteal osteosarcoma showed nuclear IGF2 and IMP3 expression, nine showed cytoplasmic IGF2 and IMP3 expression simultaneously. Seven out of forty-seven cases of parosteal osteosarcoma expressed IGF2 with nuclear staining but expressed IMP3 with cytoplasmic staining. Meanwhile, three cases expressed IGF2 with cytoplasmic staining but expressed IMP3 with nuclear staining. Similar to the parosteal osteosarcoma, the periosteal osteosarcoma expressed IGF2 and IMP3 mainly with nuclear staining simultaneously, forty out of fifty-five cases of periosteal osteosarcoma did that. Five out of fifty-five cases expressed IGF2 and IMP3 with cytoplasmic staining at the same time. Four cases showed nuclear IGF2 staining and cytoplasmic IMP3 staining. In the parosteal and periosteal osteosarcoma, there was no significant difference in IGF and IMP3 expression patterns (P = 0.216). However, compared with conventional osteosarcoma, the parosteal and periosteal osteosarcoma showed significant difference in IMP3 and IGF2 expression (P = 0.016, P = 0.023). IGF2 and IMP3 expression patterns were positive correlation in the different osteosarcoma (r = 0.1021, P = 0.032). The Microvessel density (MVD) in osteosarcoma with IGF2 and IMP3 cytoplasmic staining was more than that with nuclear expression of IGF2 and IMP3, and the difference was significant (P = 0.024). Moreover, the conventional osteosarcoma with cytoplasmic IGF and IMP3 showed more MVD than parosteal and periosteal osteosarcoma with cytoplasmic IGF and IMP3, and the difference was significant (P = 0.035). IGF2 and IMP3 had different expression patterns, which might be associated with angiogenesis. However, cytoplasmic and nuclear expression of IGF2 and IMP3 might play different roles in the angiogenesis of osteosarcoma.  相似文献

Large‐scale patterns of body size variation are described by well‐known generalizations such as Bergmann’s rule; the generality and underlying causes of these patterns have been much debated. Intraspecific extension of this rule was tested in various ectotherms, and evidence was found for both Bergmann and converse Bergmann clines. In this study, we explored spatial patterns of variation in a widespread amphibian, the Common toad (Bufo bufo), along a 2240 km latitudinal gradient across Europe. We tested for covariation of adult body size, age and growth parameters with latitude, altitude, length of activity period and mean temperature during this period using both original and literature data. We selected 13 European populations, representing a latitudinal range from 43 to 63°N and altitudinal range from 15 to 1850 m a.s.l. The length of activity period (12–33 weeks) and Tmean (6.6–15.6°C) significantly decreased as latitude and altitude of these populations increased. Mean body size decreased as latitude increased (not with altitude), and increased with Tmean (not with length of activity period). Mean and minimal adult age increased with latitude and altitude, longevity increased with altitude only. Age increased as length of activity period decreased (not with Tmean). The growth coefficient (0.32–0.92 in males, 0.18–0.74 in females, available for six populations) decreased as altitude increased, and increased as both length of activity period and Tmean increased; latitudinal trend was non‐significant. Our analysis shows that B. bufo clearly exhibited a converse Bergmann cline along latitudinal gradient, but not along altitudinal gradient; the main effect of elevation was on age. The effects of ecological conditions also differed: body size increased with Tmean, while age parameters were related to the length of activity period. This study highlights that, to identify causal factors underlying general ecogeographical rules, we have to take into account different phases of the life cycle, co‐variation among life history traits and ecological factors acting on each of these traits. In amphibians with complex life cycles, lack of appropriate demographical or ecological data may affect our understanding of the variety of observed body size patterns.  相似文献

In most freeze tolerant insects, the tolerance of the formation of internal body ice is arrived at by a two‐step process: (S‐1) a period of supercooling of the body fluids that is followed by (S‐2) the freezing event. To date, the necessity of S‐1 remains to be questioned seriously. The present study reports evidence that S‐1 may be almost completely substituted or superseded in large‐bodied insects by integumental buffering. In the New Zealand alpine grasshopper Sigaus australis Hutton, there is a substantial difference between external and body core temperatures at the moment when internal ice nucleation is registered. Using the invagination of the pleural suture as a nondetrimental proxy for the core and the sclerotized postnotum as a measure of surface temperature, comparisons of the temperature of crystallization (Tc) show a highly significant difference (P < 0.001; Kolmogorov–Smirnov test). Proxy core Tc values are in the range from ?0.11 to ?4.78 °C compared with the range of ?4.1 to ?14.2 °C in external proxy Tc values. Although a thermal lag may sometimes be quietly assumed in measurements of Tc, a temperature differential of this size (approximately 6 °C), which is equivalent to the entire supercooling potential of many freeze tolerant insects, is of particular note. These findings have wider application to other large‐bodied insects with similarly well‐developed integumental protection.  相似文献
