Summary Specimens of the Antarctic fish P. borchgrevinki were collected from just beneath the sea-ice in McMurdo Sound over the period 8 November to 6 December, 1985. The stomach contents of 200 fish were analysed and compared with the co-occurrence of the prey species in the plankton. Numerically, the dominant prey was a thecosomatid pteropod Limacina helicina (83%), followed by a hyperiid amphipod Hyperiella dilatata (5%). Other prey species in decreasing order of occurrence were Euphausia crystallorophias, Euchaeta antarctica, other copepods, a decapod crustacean larva, chaetognaths, the amphipods Orchomene plebs and Epimiriella macronyx, and unidentified juvenile fish. The order of frequency of occurrence of these prey in the guts of all the fish was H. dilatata (in 73% of the fish), L. helicina (71%), calanoid copepods (55%), chaetognaths (51%), E. crystallorophias (42%), decapod crustacean larva (32%), O. plebs (27%), juvenile fish (20%), and E. macronyx (14%). In volumetric terms, the dominant diet contributors were O. plebs (38%), L. helicina (17%) and chaetognaths (15%). All prey except O. plebs and E. macronyx were taken in concurrent plankton samples. Although planktivory of Pagothenia borchgrevinki is confirmed, it is not certain whether feeding is confined to the immediate sub-ice environment.  相似文献

Synopsis Four species of nototheniid fish were sampled from below the sea ice near Cape Armitage, McMurdo Sound:Pagothenia borchgrevinki from just below the ice 1.5 km offshore,Trematomus bernacchii, Trematomus hansoni andTrematomus centronotus from off the bottom in about 20 m of water near the shore. Scale worms and isopods were conspicuous non-planktonic prey, and present in the three benthic fish species. The planktonic pteropod molluscLimacina helicina was numerically common in all four species of fish. The planktonic hyperiid amphipodHyperiella dilatata was also found in all fish species. WhereasP. borchgrevinki is planktivorous in accord with its pelagic habit, theTrematomus spp. clearly also feed on plankton from the water column.T. hansoni is particularly planktivorous, taking smaller copepods thanP. borchgrevinki.  相似文献

We studied the population dynamics and reproductive biology of Caprella dilatata and Caprella equilibra in order to provide the basis for understanding the ecological role of both species in Mar del Plata Harbour. Caprellids and organisms from the fouling community were obtained by sampling in the harbour, monthly from April 2014 to March 2015. Mean density of C. dilatata was homogeneous during most of the study period (ca. 50–200 ind/100?g) and reached their maximum in May (ca. 650 ind/100?g), while C. equilibra did not show any differences during the sampling period (ca. 30 ind/100?g). Juveniles of C. dilatata reached their highest densities in May, while ovigerous females were at their maximum values in late spring, summer and early autumn, and no correlation was found between seawater temperature and monthly density. On the other hand, C. equilibra reached its maximum juvenile and ovigerous female densities in summer, and showed a positive correlation with seawater temperature. Sex-ratio was female biased in C. dilatata, but in C. equilibra it was equal between sexes. The number of eggs carried by females was positively correlated to the size in both species. The present study suggests that the population dynamics of C. equilibra are intimately related to seawater temperature, while for C. dilatata no relationship was found. Future studies of ecology and behaviour traits in caprellid species are needed in order to determine the ecological role and the environmental factors that could affect both species.  相似文献

During the last years, many randomly collected specimens of the corticolous hepatic Frullania dilatata (Jungermanniales) from Tuscany (Italy) were carefully screened for the presence of fungi. A heterogeneous assemblage of ten species of ascomycetes belonging to nine genera and five orders were found. Especially well represented are the Hypocreales with four species. Altogether, more than 100 fungal records are given. A key to the species is provided and the distinguishing characters are indicated including illustrations of ascospores. Most frequently found are Calonectria frullaniae (perianthicolous), which prevents normal capsule development and Bryocentria brongniartii (leaf-perforating). Hypobryon florentinum Döbbeler is described as new. Up to five different species may be found on the same host specimen. Features shared by most species are the formation of tiny perithecial ascomata, biotrophic parasitism, restriction to F. dilatata, and occupation of distinct and species-specific microniches. This is the first bryomycological investigation based on comprehensive material of one host species occurring in a small part of its geographical distribution area.Taxonomic novelties: Hypobryon florentinum Döbbeler, sp. nov.  相似文献

The New Zealand distributions of three species of Boeckella (Copepoda, Calanoida), B. triarticulata, B. dilatata and B. hamata are mapped. B. triarticulata is primarily a pond dweller but is also found in reservoirs and shallow lakes. B. dilatata is mainly found in the deeper glacial lakes and ponds in the central region of the South Island and B. hamata has a more widespread distribution in lakes and ponds in the South Island and lower half of the North Island. Differences in temperature optima, food requirements and dispersal ability among the three Boeckella species are related to vicariant events to explain their distribution in New Zealand.  相似文献

We were interested in whether the contrasting regional distribution patterns of three congeneric, frequently co-occurring fern species (Dryopteris carthusiana, D. dilatata and D. expansa) could be explained by differential biomass allocation strategies and different phenotypic plasticities to light availability. The morphology and habitat preference of these ferns are known to be very similar, but in Estonia, their frequencies of occurrence differ sharply––Dryopteris carthusiana is common, D. expansa grows in scattered localities, and D. dilatata is rare. We grew the species under different levels of illumination (100, 50, 25 and 10% of full daylight) in an experimental garden to compare their autecological responses to shading. After one growing season there were clear interspecific differences in total plant biomass accumulation––D. carthusiana > D. expansa > D. dilatata––indicating the possible competitive inferiority of the latter at the young sporophyte stage. D. expansa was the least shade-tolerant, with biomass decreasing sharply under less than 50% illumination; D. dilatata was the most shade-tolerant, with similar growth at all illumination levels. In relative biomass allocation patterns, the most notable differences among species were in the relative shares of biomass stored in rhizomes. In D. carthusiana and D. expansa this share was nearly constant and independent of the illumination conditions. D. dilatata allocated very little biomass into rhizome in deep shade, but was able to increase this share more than twofold in 50% light. Dryopteris dilatata was clearly shown to be morphologically the most plastic of the three. In four traits––rhizome mass, frond:below-ground biomass ratio, stipe length and specific leaf area––its degree of ontogenetic plasticity to light was significantly higher than that of D. expansa and D. carthusiana. While the general performance (biomass production) of species in the experiment coincided with that observed in nature, the results of plasticity estimation were somewhat surprising––it is difficult to explain the inferior performance of a species (D. dilatata) through high morphological plasticity. Probably, the species is rare either because of certain climatic restrictions, or because it is presently expanding its distribution and is in the phase of invading Estonian understory communities.  相似文献

Forty-three and 49 specimens of the Antarctic fish Trematomus newnesi were collected in the coastal waters of Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, during December 1994 and February 1998, respectively. The dietary composition of the two fish samples was determined by means of stomach content analysis and then compared. In general, as reported in most of the previous studies, planktivory appeared to be the main feeding habit of T. newnesi. However, the different environmental conditions occurring in the study area in the two periods investigated, such as the degree of the sea-ice coverage and the related amount of light available below the ice, influenced the food composition of T. newnesi. In December 1994, the whole area investigated was covered by a thick layer of sea ice and the diet of T. newnesi consisted of few prey taxa. Some species that characterize the so-called “cryopelagic habitat”, such as the euphausiid Euphausia crystallorophias and the copepod Metridia gerlachei, were by far the most important prey, followed by amphipods and the pteropod Limacina helicina. Conversely, the ostracod Alacia belgicae and larval stages of fish (Pleuragramma antarcticum) were consumed occasionally. In late summer (February 1998), the lack of sea-ice coverage and changes in the associated fauna influenced the feeding habit of T. newnesi. In this period the food spectrum appeared to be more diverse, revealing an active feeding search in the water column. The bulk of food was composed of several prey groups, such as E. crystallorophias, hyperiid amphipods (Hyperiella dilatata), copepods, L. helicina and several species of fish larvae. Present data provide evidence of a marked feeding plasticity of T. newnesi, in response to diverse environmental conditions that characterize the High-Antarctic Zone. Accepted: 17 July 1999  相似文献

Three species of Boeckella (B. triarticulata, B. dilatata and B. hamata) were reared from copepodite I to adult at three naturally fluctuating food levels and three temperatures in a 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design. Development times, lengths, times to produce the first clutch, clutch sizes, egg voumes, interclutch times, infertile clutches, total egg production, total reproductive time and mortality were measured. Development times for the three species were surprisingly similar but mortality differed among the treatments. The three species differed in their reproductive strategies. B. triarticulata, the largest species, produced a few large clutches. B. dilatata, the smallest species, produced many small clutches and invested the most energy per egg. B. hamata produced larger clutches than B. dilatata but not as many. B. hamata was the most tolerant of low, food levels and exhibited the most plasticity across the treatments. Thus, greater plasticity in life history characters is associated with survival in a wider-range of conditions.  相似文献

Antioxidative and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitory effects of methanolic extract from A. dilatata were investigated in HT1080 cells. Treatment with A. dilatata extract suppressed the intensity of electron spin resonance signal on the generation of DPPH radicals in a cell-free system and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation by 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA). Radical simulated oxidation of membrane proteins and lipids were also inhibited by treatment with A. dilatata extract in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, a protective effect on oxidative damage of purified genomic DNA was observed in the presence of A. dilatata extract. These results revealed that A. dilatata has an excellent scavenging ability on ROS-induced oxidative damage. Moreover, this extract reduced the expression levels of MMP-2 and -9 in gelatin zymography, and RT-PCR analysis without any cytotoxic influence. Therefore, A. dilatata has a promising potential as a valuable source to be used as ingredient in functional foods, related to oxidative damage.  相似文献

Three species of Boeckella (B. triarticulata, B. dilatata and B. hamata) were reared from hatching to copepodite I (CI) at three naturally fluctuating food levels and three temperatures in a 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design. Development times, lengths and mortality were measured for each species in nine treatments. Temperature had the major effect on development times but food level had the major effect on CI lengths. Mortality varied interspecifically with treatment. The combined effect of temperature and food on development times and lengths was species-specific. There were trade-offs between development time and growth to meet constraints imposed by naupliar metamorphosis. The three species varied in the timing of metamorphosis to CI. B. triarticulata nauplii were age determined, B. dilatata nauplii were size determined and B. hamata nauplii were flexibly age and size determined depending on treatment. Differences in life history parameters and the timing of naupliar metamorphosis are discussed in relation to the distributions of the species in ponds (B. triarticulata), glacial lakes (B. dilatata) and coastal lakes (B. hamata) in the South Island of New Zealand.  相似文献

Seven species of medusae were collected using scuba equipment in neritic waters of McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea, Antarctica. Two species dominated, the narcomedusa Solmundella bitentaculata and the scyphomedusa Diplulmaris antarctica. Two new taxa were found. Leuckartiara brownei n. sp., a pandeid anthomedusa, has gonads with two major longitudinal folds in the interradii and several smaller perradially directed folds. Besides four large perradial tentacles, it has up to 28 short rudimentary tentacles. This is the first report of this genus from the Southern Ocean. Benthocodon hyalinus n. gen., n. sp., a rhopalonematoid trachymedusa, has 8 linear to sinuous gonads on the radial canals. The tubular manubrium is attached to a gastric peduncle. The tentacles are numerous (about 800) and grow successively. This is the second reported trachymedusa from the Ross Sea. Solmundella bitentaculata ate the thecosome pteropod Limacina helicina. Diplulmaris antarctica medusae fed on the gymnosome pteropod Clione antarctica and on L. helicina. The hyperiid amphipod Hyperiella dilatata, mostly females, was seen attached to the exumbrellas of both D. antarctica and S. bitentaculata. Up to 54 amphipods were seen on each D. antarctica medusa. The amphipods did no visible damage to the medusae.  相似文献

Laboulbenia coneglanensis isolated from Japanese harpaline carabids is described and photographed. It is compared morphologically withL. flagellata from Japan and Europe, which is similar in appearance. The most important difference between the two species is in antheridial character and host range. Other characters such as coloration, perithecial shape, especially the shape of the perithecial apex, and size of ascospores are also useful for distinction.Laboulbenia ophoni var.dilatata described by Maire (1920) is regarded as a synonym ofL. coneglanensis.  相似文献

The inhibitory effects on esterases and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in the freshwater rotifer Euchlanis dilatata, native to Mexico, were assessed by fluorimetry after in vivo exposure (30?min) in laboratory conditions to sublethal concentrations of metals and pesticides. EC50 values for esterases ranged from 7.9?×?10?7 for DDT to 61.9 μg l?1 for methyl parathion, while corresponding values for PLA2 ranged from 0.96?×?10?6 for mercury to 69.2 μg l?1 for lead. These enzyme systems in E. dilatata are very sensitive to the tested agents and suggest they would be suitable biomarkers. However, sensitivity to other environmental contaminants should be investigated in laboratory conditions and field studies to assess their potential as environmental biomarkers.  相似文献

Summary

Both frequency and morphology of the nutritive eggs in the snails Crepidula dilatata and Nucella crassilabrum were analyzed. In both species, nutritive eggs constitute over 90% of the eggs deposited in each capsule. Marked differences in nutritive eggs exist between these species with respect to morphological and cytological characteristics.

Nutritive eggs of C. dilatata remain uncleaved and in their cytological characteristics resemble oocytes whose development becomes arrested at the stage of germinal vesicle. Although the eggs of this snail are dimorphic in size, such dimorphism is not correlated with the fate of these cells. Nutritive eggs of N. crassilabrum typically abort their development at the stage of zygote cleavage divisions and anarchic cleavage occurs only in a small fraction of them (X = 5–6%).

The nature of these food eggs is discussed. Our findings suggest that, at least in C. dilatata, the mechanisms of nutritive egg formation reside in properties of the oocyte.  相似文献

Question: Do different competitive abilities of three fern species explain their different regional abundances? Location: Estonia, Europe. Methods: The factorial pot experiment, in which single individuals of three fern species were grown in natural soil with 0, 2,4, and 8 neighbouring individuals of Deschampsia flexuosa. Results: The response patterns of different biomass fractions and morphological parameters of fern species were similar to each other. The diploid D. expansa was the most vulnerable to competition, while tetraploid D. carthusiana and D. dilatata were more tolerant. D. carthusiana allocated relatively more to below‐ground parts than the other two species and allocation to roots increased when neighbour density increased. For D. expansa and D. dilatata, allocation to below‐ground parts decreased at high neighbour density, while in D. dilatata also the relative length of the stipe increased. Thus, the response of D. carthusiana corresponds to a ‘persistence type’ and that of D. dilatata to a ‘foraging type’. Conclusions: Lower vulnerability of D. carthusiana to competition, compared to D. expansa, may explain the higher regional and local abundance of the former. The rarity of D. dilatata in Estonia, however, could rather be explained by the impact of climatic factors, since this species is near its northeastern distribution limit in Estonia.  相似文献

The interactions among water content, chlorophyll a fluorescence emission, xanthophyll interconversions and net photosynthesis were analyzed during dehydration in desiccation-tolerant Frullania dilatata (L.) Dum. and desiccation-intolerant Pellia endiviifolia (Dicks) Dum. Water loss led to a progressive suppression of photosynthetic carbon assimilation in both species. Their chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics at low water content were: low photosynthetic quantum conversion efficiency, high excitation pressure on photosystem II and strong non-photochemical quenching. However, dissipation activity was lower in P. endiviifolia and was not accompanied by a rise in the concentration of de-epoxidised xanthophylls as F. dilatata. The photosynthetic apparatus of F. dilatata remained fully and speedily recuperable after desiccation in as indicated by the restoration of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters to pre-desiccation values upon rehydration. A lack of recovery upon remoistening of P. endiviifolia indicated permanent and irreversible damage to photosystem II. The results suggest that F. dilatata possesses a desiccation-induced zeaxanthin-mediated photoprotective mechanism which might aid photosynthesis recovery when favourable conditions are restored by alleviating photoinhibitory damage during desiccation. This avoidance mechanism might have evolved as an adaptative response to repeated cycles of desiccation and rehydration that represent a real threat to photosynthetic viability. The presence of sibling species within the marine gastropod genus Crepipatella has complicated the taxonomy of members of the group. Since the establishment of the genus, 15 species have been described, but recent studies have indicated that there are only five valid species, two of which inhabit the coasts of Chile, namely C. dilatata and C. fecunda. The two species are morphologically indistinguishable as adults, but can be differentiated on the basis of their encapsulated developmental stages. The primary aim of this study was to reconstruct phylogeny within the genus, and to establish species limits of C. dilatata and C. fecunda, using mitochondrial DNA data. To this end, we used maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference to reconstruct phylogenies using 589 bp of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene. The mtDNA phylogenies were then used as input in a general mixed Yule‐coalescent (GMYC) analysis to estimate species boundaries. In addition, quarter likelihood mapping was used to test a posteriori the confidence of inner branch patterns in the phylogenetic tree. Both DNA tree‐based and GMYC methods provide support for five isolated lineages within this species complex. Our data also suggest that Late Pleistocene and Holocene fragmentation and subsequent range expansion events may have shaped contemporary genetic patterns of Crepipatella in South America.  相似文献

Catenulid turbellarians, common in shallow, tropical ponds, affect their rotifer prey via the production of toxins. There is, however, no quantitative information on their effect on the demography of their prey. Here, we test the impact of Stenostomum cf leucops on the population dynamics of the rotifers Euchlanis dilatata and Plationus patulus, and the cladoceran Moina macrocopa. Experiments were initiated with rotifers at 0.5 ind. ml−1 and the cladoceran at 0.2 ind. ml−1; growth patterns were compared in the absence and presence of worms (2 Stenostomum ind. per 50 ml). Results revealed that brachionids were most adversely affected: there was a lower growth rate of the rotifers in the presence of worms (P < 0.01, repeated measures ANOVA), although at the densities applied, the predator did not wipe out its prey. These littoral predators may therefore regulate rotifer prey in natural conditions. In Moina, the population evolved differently; initially, we found no difference between control and treatment, but after about 10 days, the population collapsed, irrespective of a direct or indirect contact with the predator. This delayed effect deserves more study, as it could represent flatworm toxin accumulation by the cladoceran.  相似文献
