Picoplankton BIOMASS in the Ross Sea (Antarctica)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Summary Spatial distribution of picoplankton in the Ross Sea was studied. The authors discuss the biomasses of various picoplanktonic-sized fractions and of bacterial cells between 0.2 and 2.0 m capable of growing on Marine Agar 2216 (Difco). Picoplankton having a cellular diameter cf between 1.0 and 2.0 m (PP1) generally predominate, accounting for 73% of the whole picoplankton biomass. However, smaller cells (PP2) can represent 28% of the picoplankton biomass at depths corresponding to 1% of surface light. These results are in good agreement with those found in the coastal regions of McMurdo Sound (Fuhrman and Azam 1980) and in other areas of the Antarctic seas where total bacterioplankton was studied (Hanson et al. 1983b; El-Sayed 1987; Lancelot et al. 1989). Biomasses of total picoplankton (TPP) are not correlated with any of the environmental parameters studied. The PP1 is correlated with O2 and silicates and PP2 is correlated with O2, phosphates temperature and nitrates. Aerobic heterotrophic biomasses are correlated with O2 and salinity.  相似文献

Capulus subcompressus Pelseneer, 1903 (Gastropoda: Capulidae) is a small epibiont gastropod living at Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea) down to 540 m on the calcareous tubes of its unique host, the serpulid Serpula narconensis Baird, 1865. This polychaete forms bush-like aggregates which host a rich microfauna of crustaceans, hydroids and molluscs. In contrast to all other capulids, C. subcompressus shows an evident oval shell aperture, which is due to an allometric growth that can be imputed to the Serpula tube morphology. Since the allometric growth is detectable in all size classes, it could be deduced that the compressed shape of the C. subcompressus shell is the stable result of a significant evolutionary history which binds tightly these two species in Antarctic waters. Aplanochytrium stocchinoi, a new species of Labyrinthulomycota, is described from samples collected in Antarctica. Ultrastructural, life cycle and molecular data characterizing the new taxon are provided and compared with the features of other species included in the genus Aplanochytrium. The phylogenetic position of A. stocchinoi is investigated using the 18S rDNA as molecular marker and applying maximum parsimony, minimum evolution and maximum likelihood methods.  相似文献

The biochemical composition and spatial distribution of particulate organic matter (POM) were studied in the Ross Sea (Antarctica) in summer 1989 to assess the quantitative role of organic carbon fractions in the cycling of organic matter in the water column. Large differences in chemical composition were observed between surface and deep layers. The results indicated that, despite large geographical differences, POM was quite homogeneous, of phytoplankton origin and mostly detrital. Different ratios were used to investigate the changes in biochemical composition of particulate organic matter in relation to the ice-melting: CN (organic carbonorganic nitrogen ratio) and C-POMPOC (sum of carbohydrate, protein and lipid carbontotal organic carbon ratio) were used to analyse the percentage of refractory organic material. PPRTPCHO (proteincarbohydrate ratio) were used to establish POM age and RNADNA ratios as a relative measure of particulate activity; POCChl a and N-PPRTChl a ratios were used to estimate the autotrophic contribution to the suspended particulate organic matter. Despite its low caloric value (5.3 Kcal g POM–1), an high caloric content in the photic layer (1.6 Kcal m–3 of POM and 2.5 Kcal m–3 of POC) was found thus indicating that a large amount of food was available to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Halomonas glaciei isolated from frazil ice in the Ross Sea (Antarctica) during austral summer 2003 was phenotypically characterized and its capability of degrading organic matter was tested. We evaluated specific bacterial growth rates (mu) to understand at which temperatures bacterial growth shows a linear and direct relationship with the available substrate (4-22 degrees C) and afterwards we tested H. glaciei growth curves and degradative potential at 0, 10 and 37 degrees C using two different media (one enriched and one depleted in PO(4)). The strain grew exponentially only at 10 degrees C. The fastest hydrolysis rates were expressed by enzymes aimed at polysaccharide degradation (alpha-d-glucosidase, beta-d-glucosidase and beta-d-galactosidase) while alkaline phosphatase and aminopeptidase activities were rather low. Our data suggest a preferential demand for carbon derived from carbohydrates rather than from proteins: ectoenzyme activities transformed into carbon mobilization from organic polymers, showed that the total carbon potentially released from polysaccharides can be almost one order of magnitude higher than the protein carbon mobilization. Principal component analysis of the enzyme affinity separated the six experimental conditions, highlighting how different physical (temperature) and chemical (PO(4) enrichment or depletion) features actively lead to a differentiation in the efficiency of the ectoenzymes produced, resulting in preferential degradation of diverse kinds of organic substrates.  相似文献

Polygordius antarcticus sp. nov. is described from benthic material collected at depths ranging between 31 and 61 m in Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, during the 1987–1988 and 1988–1989 expeditions of the Italian National Research Program in Antarctica. This is the first named species of the genus from Antarctic waters. Although no fully mature specimens were available, the new species appears unique in combining the following features: a regular pygidium, inflated and with a single ring of round adhesive pads, a conical prostomium with short antennae (only half as long as the prostomium) and shallow head fold, and a well-developed circulatory apparatus, with circumoesophageal commissures entering the prostomium and long intersegmental commissures insinuating into the ventrolateral compartments of the trunk. These and other significant features were investigated by light and scanning electron microscopy. In the construction of the head and the scheme of the blood system, the new species resembles Polygordius triestinus Woltereck, described by Hempelmann in 1906, an aberrant species inhabiting muddy, anoxic sediments in the Adriatic Sea, but it differs significantly from it in the shape of the mouth (in P. triestinus the upper lip is hypertrophied and strongly protruding) and the pygidium (in P. triestinus this region is stump-like and non-adhesive). The pygidium of P. antarcticus sp. nov. is encircled by 28–30 small adhesive pads, each with 15–20 glandular openings. Preterminal cirri are lacking, as are perianal appendages. The anus is surrounded by six to seven lobes of which the midventral is largest and longest. A world distribution map of the genus is provided. Accepted: 27 August 1998  相似文献

Although echinoderms constitute some of the most conspicuous taxa of the Antarctic benthic communities, the echinoderm fauna of Terra Nova has not been described yet. The present study provides the first species list of echinoids, ophiuroids and asteroids from Terra Nova Bay (30–500 m depth) and describes the depth distribution of these species. Preliminary observations of the summer reproductive condition of some of the species are also included.  相似文献

This survey examined the association between the hyperiid amphipod Hyperoche martinezii and ctenophores off the Argentinian coast (38°08′17″S, 57°31′18″W) through the evaluation of seasonality, prevalence and intensity of infection during an annual cycle. Medusae were also examined but only the ctenophores Mnemiopsis leidyi, Pleurobrachia pileus and Beroe ovata showed this association during the austral mid-spring to mid-summer. A total of 502 hyperiids were obtained; most (422 individuals) were larval stages, 53 juveniles and 27 adults. Mnemiopsis leidyi had the highest number of hyperiids with 98.6%, followed by P. pileus (0.80%), and B. ovata (0.60%). Total prevalence was 2.0 and intensity of infection ranged between 1 and 17 hyperiids per ctenophore. The host with highest prevalence was B. ovata (4.54), followed by M. leidyi (3.76) and P. pileus (0.1). Prevalence values had some correlations with the increase in the total length of B. ovata (r?=?0.480, P?=?0.006) and M. leidyi (r?=?0.501, P?B. ovata (r?=?0.425, P?=?0.017). The hyperiid was found in different parts of the host body: larval stages were found in the canal close to the subtentacular comb row and the stomodeum, whereas juvenile/adult stages were observed with a resting posture on the external surface of the ctenophores. The known geographic distribution of H. martinezii was extended; this finding represents the addition of three new hosts for this hyperiid.  相似文献

Antarctic fishes were sampled with 41 midwater and 6 benthic trawls during the 1999–2000 austral summer in the eastern Ross Sea. The oceanic pelagic assemblage (0–1,000 m) contained Electrona antarctica, Gymnoscopelus opisthopterus, Bathylagus antarcticus, Cyclothone kobayashii and Notolepis coatsi. These were replaced over the shelf by notothenioids, primarily Pleuragramma antarcticum. Pelagic biomass was low and concentrated below 500 m. The demersal assemblage was characteristic of East Antarctica and included seven species each of Artedidraconidae, Bathydraconidae and Channichthyidae, ten species of Nototheniidae, and three species each of Rajidae and Zoarcidae. Common species were Trematomus eulepidotus (36.5%), T. scotti (32.0%), Prionodraco evansii (4.9%), T. loennbergii (4.7%) and Chaenodraco wilsoni (4.3%). Diversity indices were highest for tows from 450 to 517 m (H=1.90–2.35). Benthic biomass ranged from 0.7 to 3.5 t km–2. It was generally higher in tows from 450 to 517 m (0.9–2.0 t km–2) although the highest biomass occurred at an inner-shelf station (238 m) due to large catches of T. eulepidotus, T. scotti and P. evansii.  相似文献

A new species of pelagic amphipod, Lestrigonus ducrayi sp. nov.,from eastern Australia, is described and illustrated. It isvery similar to Lestrigonus bengalensis Giles, 1887, but isreadily distinguished by a relatively shorter telson (aboutone-third peduncle uropod 3) and, in mature males, pereonites1–5 are fused as in females. The two species often occurtogether in the same plankton sample; the new species beingmore abundant inshore, although both species seem to preferinshore waters. The biodiversity research expedition TAN0204 with RS Tangaroa to the Ross Sea in 2004 yielded a new collection of 2,687 specimens of pycnogonids. As much as 25 different species encompassing 14 genera and eight families were identified and their records are discussed herein. The collection is archived in the Marine Invertebrate Collection of the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA). The majority (69%) of specimens are from the Nymphon australe group (Nymphonidae), although species richness and abundance varied among the stations sampled. The collection includes several specimens from polymerous taxa; Pentanymphon antarcticum (Nymphonidae), Decolopoda australis (Colossendeidae) and Pentapycnon bouvieri (Pycnogonidae). All species were classified based on morphological characters, and DNA sequences (from the 18S, 12S, 16S and COI regions) for 21 of the representative morphotypes are given. The DNA sequences confirmed the species-level distinctiveness of these morphotypes. No species new to science were identified, although further detailed morphometric and/or molecular analyses may reveal cryptic or sibling species, especially in species such as the highly abundant Nymphon australe group. Two new antarctic species of the genus Schizotricha Allman have been studied. The material comes from the Scotia Sea (Antarctica) and was collected by the Spanish antarctic expedition `Antártida 8611'. Both species are described and figured and the systematic position is discussed. A general survey of the geographical and bathymetrical distribution of the antarctic and subantarctic species of the genus is given. Finally, a key for the identification of the antarctic and subantarctic species of the genus, together with a comparative table including main features, are presented. In the absence of fossils, the origin of Notothenioidei, a perciform suborder dominating the fish fauna of the Southern Ocean, remains conjectural; some morphoecological evidence suggests relationships to zoarcoids. To test this point we have compared the karyotype morphology and genome size of two species of zoarcids from the Ross Sea to those of one species each of the notothenioid families Artedidraconidae, Bathydraconidae, Channichthyidae and Nototheniidae from the same region. A karyotype of 48, mostly acrocentric, chromosomes, localization of nucleolar organizers on a pair of small dibrachial chromosomes, a genome size of about 3 pg of DNA, characterize both zoarcids; similar features can be found in the karyology of the notothenioids (especially the Nototheniidae). However, all shared characters appear as plesiomorphic in teleost karyology, which does not help in producing new data on the problem of notothenioid relationships.  相似文献

The shallow-water hydrozoan Antarctic fauna is still poorly studied, and available knowledge mostly refers to samples gathered by traditional ship-operated gears. By scuba diving in the coastal areas off the Italian Antarctic station “Mario Zucchelli” (Ross Sea, Terra Nova Bay), in the austral summer 2002–2003, a total of 20 hydrozoan species were found, belonging to 10 families and 13 genera. As hypothesized, Anthoathecata (11 species), usually under-represented in collections from indirect sampling gears, are common as also are Leptothecata (9 species). Hydractiniidae and Hydractinia are the dominant family and genus, followed by Haleciidae and Halecium. A new species to science, Halecium exaggeratum sp. nov. is also described. Most species are either endemic to Antarctic waters or restricted to Antarctic/sub-Antarctic areas; only two species have a wider distribution. Material reared in aquaria at the Italian Antarctic Base Mario Zucchelli facilitated knowledge of the life cycle and reproductive biology of several species. In particular, Opercularella belgicae was found to liberate a medusa stage referable to Phialella, and the species is assigned here to that genus, as Phialella belgicae. Also, extraordinary is the complete absence or scant representation of the most typical Antarctic benthic hydroid genera (Antarctoscyphus, Oswaldella, Schizotricha, Staurotheca, and Symplectoscyphus), likely related to the shallow limits of sampling (down to 48 m).  相似文献

Summary O. plebs (Hurley 1965) is a dominant bottom species of amphipoda, occuring in the investigated area at 10 to 760 m. Population structure and sex proportions depend upon the depth and the season of the year of sampling. Development of eggs occurs in winter; the young hatch in spring; the number of eggs produced is proportional to the volume of females. A relationship has been established between length and wet/dry body weight ofO. plebs. The species is necrophagus, long enduring without food. At -1.8°C retention of food in the gut may last from several hours to several days. Heart beat frequency oscillates between 40–80 beats/min at -1.8°C and depends on temperature. A temperature near 8°C is lethal. Oxygen consumption ofO. plebs depends on their developmental stage and sex and on trophic conditions. The level of metabolism of starved animals can be half that of fed animals. The greatest differences in oxygen consumption occur at-1.8°C, the ambient temperature. Oxygen consumption as a reaction to higher temperatures is different for starved and fed animals.O. plebs are hypostenothermic organisms; that is, they can adapt to the lowest temperature occuring in the marine environment.In memory of Mary Alice McWhinnie (1922–1980)  相似文献

Two new species of the genus Staurotheca Allman, 1888 have been studied (Staurotheca cornuta sp. nov. and Staurotheca multifurcata sp. nov). The material, from the Scotia Ridge area (Antarctica), was collected in 1986/1987 by the Spanish Antarctic expedition “Antártida 8611”. Each species is described and figured, and its systematic position among allied species is noted. Data concerning autecology and geographical distribution for each species are given. A comparative table listing the main features of the known species of the genus is included.
