Recent investigations have shown that processes within the planktonic microbial web are of great significance for the functioning of limnetic ecosystems. However, the general importance of protozoans and bacteria as food sources for rotifers, a major component of planktonic habitats, has seldom been evaluated. Results of feeding experiments and the analysis of the food size spectrum of rotifers suggest that larger bacteria, heterotrophic flagellates and small ciliates should be a common part of the food of most rotifer species. About 10–40 per cent of rotifers' food can consist of heterotrophic organisms of the microbial web. Field experiments have indicated that rotifer grazing should generally play a minor role in bacteria consumption compared to feeding by coexisting protozoans. However, according to recent experiments regarding food selection, rotifers should be efficient predators on protozoans. Laboratory experiments have revealed that even nanophagous rotifers can feed on ciliates. Preliminary microcosm and chemostat experiments have indicated that rotifers, due to their relatively low community grazing rates compared to the growth rates of bacteria and protozoans, should generally not be able (in contrast to some cladocerans) to suppress the microbial web via grazing, though they may structure it. Filter-feeding nanophagous rotifers (e.g. brachionids) seem to be significant feeders on the smaller organisms of the microbial web (bacteria, flagellates, small ciliates), whereas grasping species (e.g. synchaetids and asplanchnids) seem to be efficient predators on larger organisms (esp. ciliates). Another important role of rotifers is their feedback effect on the microbial web. Rotifers provide degraded algae, bacteria and protozoans to the microbial web and may promote microbial activity. Additional experimental work is necessary for a better understanding of the function of rotifers in aquatic ecosystems.

To effectively ambush prey, sit‐and‐wait predators must locate sites where profitable prey are likely to return. One means by which predators evaluate potential ambush sites is by recognizing high‐use areas through chemical cues deposited inadvertently by their prey. However, it is unknown whether ambush predators can use chemical cues associated with past prey items in the assessment of potential ambush sites. I examined selection of ambush sites by timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) exposed to trails made from chemical extracts of the integument of various prey species. I evaluated the role of feeding experience in ambush site selection by comparing the behavior of timber rattlesnakes before and after feeding experience with different sized prey items. Timber rattlesnakes are more likely to select ambush sites adjacent to chemical trails from prey with which they have had feeding experience, but only those fed relatively large prey showed an increase in responsiveness. Increased responsiveness after feeding experience was exhibited in experiments using integumentary extracts of mammals (the natural prey of timber rattlesnakes), but not in those using extracts of fish. These results indicate that ambush predators may learn to recognize chemicals on the integument of profitable food items, and use that experience when subsequently selecting ambush sites. Additionally, these findings provide evidence that size‐dependent predation by snakes may be, in some species, a result of active prey selection.

Morphological controls on cannibalism in a planktonic marine phagotroph
Martel CM  Flynn KJ 《Protist》2008,159(1):41-51
The ingestion preferences of planktonic protozoa influence the structure and succession of microbial communities and thus biogeochemical cycling within aquatic environments. Some predatory ciliates and flagellates are reported to switch to cannibalism when no suitable non-self prey items are available for consumption. However, the importance of cannibalism as a survival strategy, and its ubiquity within the planktonic protozoa is not known. We report the first attempt to quantify cannibalism in a phagotrophic marine dinoflagellate (Oxyrrhis marina). Cannibalistic Oxyrrhis cells seldom comprised >2% of any experimental population, including those in which all non-self prey items had been grazed to extinction. Such 'prey-deplete' cultures became dominated by homogeneous populations of highly motile Oxyrrhis that were morphologically unable (too similar in size) to cannibalise. That cannibalism can only occur when 'victim' and 'cannibal' cell size-classes of sufficient difference collide, suggests that cannibalism may be of limited use as a long-term survival strategy in phagotrophic protozoa.

Successful survival and reproduction of prey organisms depend on their ability to detect their potential predators accurately and respond effectively with suitable defences. Predator detection can be innate or can be acquired through learning. We studied prey–predator interactions in the larval bronzed frogs (Sylvirana temporalis), which have the innate ability to detect certain predators. We conducted a series of experiments to determine if the larval S. temporalis rely solely on innate predator detection mechanisms or can also learn to use more specific cues such as conspecific alarm cues for the purpose. The results of our study clearly indicate that larval S. temporalis use both innate and learned mechanisms for predator detection. Predator-naïve tadpoles could detect kairomones alone as a potential threat and responded by reducing activity, suggesting an innate predator detection mechanism. Surprisingly, predator-naïve tadpoles failed to detect conspecific alarm cues as a potential threat, but learned to do so through experience. After acquiring the ability to detect conspecific alarm cues, they could associate novel predator cues with conspecific alarm cues. Further, post feeding stages of larval S. temporalis are sensitive for learning to detect conspecific alarm cues to label novel predators.

Zooplankton-mediated changes of bacterial community structure
Enclosure experiments in the mesotrophic Schöhsee in northern Germany were designed to study the impact of metazooplankton on components of the microbial food web (bacteria, flagellates, ciliates). Zooplankton was manipulated in 500-liter epilimnetic mesocosms so that either Daphnia or copepods were dominating, or metazooplankton was virtually absent. The bacterial community responded immediately to changes in zooplankton composition. Biomass, productivity, and especially the morphology of the bacteria changed drastically in the different treatments. Cascading predation effects on the bacterioplankton were transmitted mainly by phagotrophic protozoans which had changed in species composition and biomass. When Daphnia dominated, protozoans were largely suppressed and the original morphological structure of the bacteria (mainly small rods and cocci) remained throughout the experiment. Dominance of copepods or the absence of metazoan predators resulted in a mass appearance of bacterivorous protists (flagellates and ciliates). They promoted a fast decline of bacterial abundance and a shift to the predominance of morphologically inedible forms, mainly long filaments. After 3 days they formed 80–90% of the bacterial biomass. The results indicate that metazooplankton predation on phagotrophic protozoans is a key mechanism for the regulation of bacterioplankton density and community structure.Correspondence to: K. The non-photosynthetic phagotrophic dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium fungiforme Anissimova, ingests prey cytoplasm through a highly extensible structure called the peduncle. Although the peduncle is not observable when G. fungiforme is swimming, it protrudes 8–12 μm from the sulcal-angular vicinity of the cell during feeding, and is approximately 3.3 μm wide when the cytoplasm of its prey is flowing through it. A circular-oval ring of overlapping microtubules, the ‘microtubular basket’ may be seen in transmission electron microscope sections of G. fungiforme and it is inferred that this structure is a cross section of a retracted peduncle. The microtubular basket-peduncle complex is discussed in relation to similar structures in other dinoflagellates and to the tentacle of the suctorian ciliates which have a homologous ingestion system.

Significance of predation by protists in aquatic microbial food webs
Predation in aquatic microbial food webs is dominated by phagotrophic protists, yet these microorganisms are still understudied compared to bacteria and phytoplankton. In pelagic ecosystems, predaceous protists are ubiquitous, range in size from 2 μm flagellates to >100 μm ciliates and dinoflagellates, and exhibit a wide array of feeding strategies. Their trophic states run the gamut from strictly phagotrophic, to mixotrophic: partly autotrophic and partly phagotrophic, to primarily autotrophic but capable of phagotrophy. Protists are a major source of mortality for both heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria. They compete with herbivorous meso- and macro-zooplankton for all size classes of phytoplankton. Protist grazing may affect the rate of organic sinking flux from the euphotic zone. Protist excretions are an important source of remineralized nutrients, and of colloidal and dissolved trace metals such as iron, in aquatic systems. Work on predation by protists is being facilitated by methodological advances, e.g., molecular genetic analysis of protistan diversity and application of flow cytometry to study population growth and feeding rates. Examples of new research areas are studies of impact of protistan predation on the community structure of prey assemblages and of chemical communication between predator and prey in microbial food webs. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

In lizards and snakes, foraging mode (active vs. ambush) is highly correlated with the ability to detect prey chemical cues, and the way in which such cues are utilized. Ambush-foraging lizards tend not to recognize prey scent, whereas active foragers do. Prey scent often elicits strikes in actively-foraging snakes, while ambushers use it to select profitable foraging sites. We tested the influence of foraging ecology on the evolution of squamate chemoreception by gauging the response of Burton's legless lizard ( Lialis burtonis Gray, Pygopodidae) to prey chemical cues. Lialis burtonis is the ecological equivalent of an ambush-foraging snake, feeding at infrequent intervals on relatively large prey, which are swallowed whole. Captive L. burtonis did not respond to prey odour in any manner: prey chemical cues did not elicit elevated tongue-flick rates or feeding strikes, nor were they utilized in the selection of ambush sites. Like other ambushing lizards, L. burtonis appears to be a visually oriented predator. In contrast, an active forager in the same family, the common scaly-foot ( Pygopus lepidopodus ), did tongue-flick in response to odours of its preferred prey. These results extend the correlation between lizard foraging mode and chemosensory abilities to a heretofore-unstudied family, the Pygopodidae.

Actively foraging lizards are capable of identifying prey using only chemical cues sampled by tongue-flicking, and the relatively few omnivorous and herbivorous lizards tested similarly can identify both animal and plant foods from chemical cues. Whether lizards that eat plants respond to cues specific to preferred plant types and whether there is geographic variability in responses to cues from various plants correlated with the importance of those plants in local diets is unknown. In three populations of an omnivorous lacertid, the Balearic lizard Podarcis lilfordi, we studied chemosensory sampling and feeding responses to chemical cues from plant and animal foods presented on cotton swabs. Each lizard population is endemic to one islet off the coast of Menorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. Lizards in all three populations discriminated chemical cues from plant and animal foods from control substances. Our results extend findings of prey chemical discrimination and plant chemical discrimination in omnivores, increasing confidence that correlated evolution has occurred between plant diet and chemosensory response to palatable plants. There were no consistent differences among populations in tongue-flicking and biting responses to stimuli from flowers of syntopic and allopatric plant species. The lizards may respond to cues indicative of palatability in a wide range of plant species rather than exhibiting strong responses only to locally available plant species. Nevertheless, tongue-flicking and biting frequencies varied among plant species, perhaps indicating food preferences. In addition, there were differences among populations in tongue-flick rates, latency to bite, and licking behavior. Licking was observed in only one lizard population as a response to floral chemicals from only one of the plants species tested, raising the possibility of a population-specific linkage between identification of a particular plant species and performance of an appropriate feeding response.

The ability of prey to detect predators and respond accordingly is critical to their survival. The use of chemical cues by animals in predator detection has been widely documented. In many cases, predator recognition is facilitated by the release of alarm cues from conspecific victims. Alarm cues elicit anti‐predator behavior in many species, which can reduce their risk of being attacked. It has been previously demonstrated that adult long‐toed salamanders, Ambystoma macrodactylum, exhibit an alarm response to chemical cues from injured conspecifics. However, whether this response exists in the larval stage of this species and whether it is an innate or a learned condition is unknown. In the current study, we examined the alarm response of naïve (i.e. lab‐reared) larval long‐toed salamanders. We conducted a series of behavioral trials during which we quantified the level of activity and spatial avoidance of hungry and satiated focal larvae to water conditioned by an injured conspecific, a cannibal that had recently been fed a conspecific or a non‐cannibal that was recently fed a diet of Tubifex worms. Focal larvae neither reduced their activity nor spatially avoided the area of the stimulus in either treatment when satiated, and exhibited increased activity towards the cannibal stimulus when hungry. We regard this latter behavior as a feeding response. Together these results suggest that an anti‐predator response to injured conspecifics and to cannibalistic conspecifics is absent in naïve larvae. Previous studies have shown that experienced wild captured salamanders do show a response to cannibalistic conspecifics. Therefore, we conducted an additional experiment examining whether larvae can learn to exhibit anti‐predator behavior in response to cues from cannibalized conspecifics. We exposed larvae to visual, chemical and tactile cues of stimulus animals that were actively foraging on conspecifics (experienced) or a diet of Tubifex (naïve treatment). In subsequent behavioral treatments, experienced larvae significantly reduced their activity compared to naive larvae in response to chemical cues of cannibals that had recently consumed conspecifics. We suggest that this behavior is a response to alarm cues released by consumed conspecifics that may have labeled the cannibal. Furthermore, over time, interactions with cannibals may cause potential prey larvae to learn to avoid cannibals regardless of their recent diet.

Some fish recognize the threat of predatory fish through chemical cues, which may result in variation in diel activity. However, there is little experimental evidence of diel shifts in activity of prey fish in response to the diel activity of a predator. We compared the total prey consumed and the use of cover by common bullies (Gobiomorphus cotidianus), a native benthic feeding eleotrid, when exposed to the odour of an exotic predator, European perch (Perca fluviatilis), over a 12-h period. Our results showed no significant effect of perch odour on feeding activity, but a significant increase in the use of cover at night and a decrease in the use of cover by day. While common bullies may recognize the presence of a predator through chemical cues, dark conditions may inhibit this and other sensory mechanisms, affecting their ability to recognize the proximity of a predator. For example, during the daytime they may rely on visual cues to initiate cover-seeking behavior, but in the dark, vision is impaired giving them less warning of predators, thus potentially making them more vulnerable.

Chemical cues transmitted through the environment are thought to underlie many prey responses to predation risk, but despite the known ecological and evolutionary significance of such cues, their basic composition are poorly understood. Using anuran tadpoles (prey) and dragonfly larvae (predators), we identified chemical cues associated with predation risk via solid phase extraction and mass spectrometry of the extracts. We found that dragonfly larvae predators consistently produced a negative ion, m/z 501.3, when they fed on bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) and mink frog (Rana septentrionalis) tadpoles, but this ion was absent when dragonflies were fasted or fed invertebrate prey. When tadpole behavioral responses to dragonfly chemical cues were examined, tadpoles reduced their activity, particularly in response to dragonflies feeding on tadpoles. Furthermore, a negative correlation was noted between the level of tadpole activity and the concentration of the m/z 501.3 compound in dragonfly feeding trials, indicating that this ion was possibly responsible for tadpole anti-predator behavior.

Many prey taxa use kairomones or alarm pheromones to assess the risk of predation in aquatic environments, and the rate at which these cues attenuate determines how precisely they indicate the local density of predators. We estimated the rate of degradation of chemical cues generated by Aeshna dragonfly larvae feeding on Rana temporaria tadpoles. The half‐life of the cue was 35 h and was not influenced by whether it was aged in pond water or tap water or whether other tadpoles were present in the container in which cue‐aging occurred. A review of other published estimates of predator cue half‐life revealed values of 0.2–126 h, and variation among studies was unrelated to the type of aging water, the venue in which water was aged or prey behavior observed (laboratory, field), or the type of behavior that was recorded. We conclude that factors affecting the persistence of predator cues remain uncertain in spite of their importance for understanding the evolution of induced defenses.

Specialist predators may respond strongly to sensory cues from preferred prey, but responses by generalist predators, although predicted to be less specific, are poorly known. Among squamate reptiles, diet and strength of response to chemical prey cues covary geographically in snakes that are specialist predators. There have been no previous studies of correspondence between diet and chemosensory response in lizards that are prey generalists. Actively foraging lizards discriminate between prey chemicals and control substances. It has been speculated that differential responses among prey species are unlikely in typical species that are dietary generalists. We examined this relationship in Podarcis lilfordi, an omnivorous lacertid that consumes a wide variety of animal prey. In experiments in which chemical stimuli were presented on cotton swabs, lizards responded more strongly to chemicals from a broad spectrum of prey types than to deionized water, an odorless control. These findings plus previous data showing that P. lilfordi is capable of prey chemical discrimination suggest that P. lilfordi can identify a wide range of potential prey using chemical cues. However, there was no evidence of differential response to stimuli among prey species, even in comparisons of prey included in the natural diet and potential prey not in the diet. The results, although limited to a single species, are consistent with the hypothesis that lizard species that are prey generalists do not exhibit the differential response strengths to chemical prey cues observed in snakes that have more specialized diets. 1. Benthic organisms can have a strong effect on the plankton in rivers, although normally only members of the macrofauna are considered as important consumers. In the present study we conducted experiments on four different dates (in December, March, June and September) to assess the potential role of periphytic heterotrophic flagellates (HF), ciliates and rotifers in the control of potamoplankton (bacteria, algae, HF and ciliates). 2. Natural periphyton was established on the walls of circular flow channels by exposing them to river water (River Rhine, Germany). The experimental channels (with periphyton) and control channels (without periphyton) were filled with riverine water and the increase rates of planktonic bacteria, algae, HF and oligotrich ciliates were determined for the two treatments. 3. The abundance of periphytic ciliates and rotifers at the beginning of the four experiments showed large differences with low values in December and March, and high values in June and September. Dominant potential consumers of plankton were the heterotrich ciliate Stentor sp. and bdelloid rotifers. 4. The rates of increase of planktonic algae, HF and ciliates were significantly smaller in the presence of periphyton compared with those in their absence. Significant interactions between the treatment (with and without periphyton) and the time of experiment were found for the planktonic HF and algae, indicating that the impact of the periphyton varied temporarily. The planktonic groups responded differently to the periphyton with the planktonic HF showing the highest loss rate. Significant differences were also found among the loss rates of different HF groups and different diatom size classes. 5. These laboratory experiments demonstrate that periphytic ciliates and rotifers are potentially important consumers of different planktonic groups. The quantitative impact of periphyton on plankton with respect to the selective feeding needs further attention.

Selective feeding by zooplankton can have profound consequencesfor the stability of grazer and prey populations, as demonstratedby the behavior of plankton dynamics models. We present an analyticalapproach—calculation of prey ratio trajectories—thatreveals unambiguously whether selective feeding behavior isstabilizing (i.e. provides a refuge for preferred prey speciesat low prey concentrations) or destabilizing (i.e. results inelimination of prey populations). Prey ratio trajectories werecalculated for three modeled selective feeding behaviors. Constantselection was consistently destabilizing, while selection behaviorsthat changed inresponse to either prey ratio or prey abundancecould be stabilizing. Batch culture experiments with four protozoangrazer species (three ciliates, one heterotrophic dinoftagellate)demonstrated that protozoa fed selectively in every case, weaklypreferring the larger of the two algal species offered. Stabilizingselection was observed only in the experiment with Favella sp.,however, meaning that only this species altered its selectionbehavior in response to changing experimental conditions. Becauseprotozoa are the major grazers of phytoplankton in many planktonicsystems, our findings indicate that the use of selective feedingbehaviors to stabilize plankton dynamics models needs carefulevaluation. The modeling and graphical techniques presentedhereare a tool for linking further exploration of selective feedingbehaviors with the development of planktondynamics models.

Analysing the results of various authors recent studies in the pelagic region of the Baltic revealed that protozoan biomass is in the same range or even higher than metazooplankton biomass. The dominant groups of planktonic protozoans are heterotrophic pico- and nanoflagellates (various taxonomic groups), large heterotrophic flagellates (mainly dinoflagellates) and ciliates. Regularly the spring bloom of phytoplankton is accompanied by a maximum of protozoan biomass which declines in early summer as a result of intensive grazing pressure by metazooplankton and changing food conditions. The analysis of results from different stations indicated that biomasses of protozoans increase with an increasing degree of eutrophication. Several trophic levels within the microbial web should be added to the traditional view on the pelagic food web of the Baltic. Our knowledge regarding the quantitative aspect of the microbial matter flux of the Baltic is very limited up to now and complex ecological (and taxonomical) studies using standardized methods including all protozoan components are necessary. Protozoans (various trophic groups and levels), besides bacteria, should be viewed as the metabolically most active heterotrophic component in the pelagic region of the Baltic, their activity should increase with an increasing degree of eutrophication.

Predators can affect prey in two ways—by reducing their density (consumptive effects) or by changing their behavior, physiology or other phenotypic traits (non-consumptive effects). Understanding the cues and sensory modalities prey use to detect predators is critical for predicting the strength of non-consumptive effects and the outcome of predator–prey encounters. While predator-associated cues have been well studied in aquatic systems, less is known about how terrestrial prey, particularly insect larvae, detect their predators. We evaluated how Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, larvae perceive predation risk by isolating cues from its stink bug predator, the spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris. When exposed to male “risk” predators that were surgically manipulated so they could hunt but not kill, beetles reduced feeding 29 % compared to controls. Exposure to risk females caused an intermediate response. Beetles ate 24 % less on leaves pre-exposed to predators compared to leaves never exposed to predators, indicating that tactile and visual cues are not required for the prey’s response. Volatile odor cues from predators reduced beetle feeding by 10 % overall, although male predators caused a stronger reduction than females. Finally, visual cues from the predator had a weak effect on beetle feeding. Because multiple cues appear to be involved in prey perception of risk, and because male and female predators have differential effects, beetle larvae likely experience tremendous variation in the information about risk from their local environment.
