SUMMARY. 1. Constrained cluster analysis of thirty-five surface sediment diatom assemblages shows that Lough Erne, a complex multi-basin lake in Northern Ireland, can be sub-divided into four main zones.
2. All areas of the lake system have planktonic diatoms typical of eutrophic lakes but the lack of small Stephanodiscus species in zone 4 suggests that this area of the system is least productive.
3. Surface sediment diatom assemblages can be used to assess spatial variations in complex lake systems and can thereby be used as a guide to the choice of sites for water quality monitoring and sediment coring.  相似文献

A combination of PCR amplification and oligonucleotide probing was used to investigate the populations of ammonia-oxidisers of the -Proteobacteria in the eutrophic and oligotrophic basins of Lake Windermere, a large temperate lake in the English Lake District. Numbers of ammonia-oxidisers (MPN) in the Windermere lakewater were low (< 100 cells ml–1) throughout the year with the exception of peaks in August, which coincided with stratification, and November in the South Basin where overturn may have introduced ammonia-oxidising bacteria into the water column. Sediment samples contained larger populations of ammonia oxidisers, usually ca. 104 per g. dry weight, which remained relatively constant throughout the seasonal cycle in both Basins. DNA was recovered from lakewater and sediment samples and Nitrosospiraand N. europaea-eutrophalineage16S rRNA genes amplified in a nested PCR reaction, with confirmation of identity by oligonucleotide hybridisation. Nitrosospira 16S rDNA was readily detected in all samples and therefore found to be ubiquitous. In contrast, nitrosomonad DNA of the N. europaea-eutropha lineage could only be detected in the oligotrophic North Basin. Enrichment cultures of lakewater samples only exhibited nitrification at low (0.67 mM) and medium (5 mM) ammonium concentrations, whilst sediment enrichments nitrified at all concentrations tested including high (12.5 mM) ammonium medium. These data suggest that ammonia-oxidiser populations may be physiologically distinguished between lakewater and sediment, and that species distribution in a single lake is non-uniform.  相似文献

以西藏拟溞(Daphniopsis tibetana Sars)为优势浮游动物物种的低盐度盐湖是西藏湖泊的一个重要类型,以达则错为代表,分析了其沉积背景及沉积物组成。结果如下:(1)湖泊敞水区无机沉积以内生化学沉积为主,可代表深水盐湖无机沉积物的自然沉积过程。(2)达则错盐湖浮游植物以蓝藻、硅藻、裸藻、绿藻为主,总生物量11.35 mg/L;浮游动物生物量为4.92 mg/L,其中西藏拟溞占 82.30%;浮游植物残体受盐梯度影响在盐梯度层之上聚集,而浮游动物残体及粪粒(Fecal pellets)因外表有碳酸盐附着可穿过盐梯度层沉积湖底,生物残体与浮游动物代谢产物构成了沉积有机物的物质基础。(3)表层沉积物平均含水量为66.70%,粒径0.004-0.02 mm范围内的颗粒物含量最大,占20.42%,其次为<0.004 mm的粘土,占4.53%。(4)表层沉积物总有机碳(TOC)平均含量为27.99 mg/g(干重),其中颗粒有机碳(POC)约为18.11 mg/g,占TOC的64.70%;在POC中,西藏拟溞粪粒贡献最大,约占POC的60.48%,占TOC的39.06%,占沉积物总量的1.12%,其次为西藏拟溞残体,占POC的38.85%。分析结果表明盐湖因其独特的水化学和生物学特征具有较强的沉积能力,以化学沉积为主的无机沉积及以西藏拟溞粪粒和残肢碎屑为主的有机沉积构成了该类型盐湖颗粒物沉降及沉积的主要过程。  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We outline a simple method for estimating the in-situ settling velocity of particles in wind disturbed lakes. The total sedimentation rate (primary and secondary sedimentation) was measured during storm events in two lakes using a time series sediment trap.
2. The sediment trap had 12 sample bottles which were programmed to open for periods of 3–4 h, giving total deployment times ranging from 36 to 48 h.
3. Wave mixed layer theory was used to infer if and when sediment resuspension occurred and the first order rate equation was used to estimate the settling velocity of resuspended particles.
4. The settling velocity during three resuspension events in Lough Neagh and one in Lough Macnean were 34.3, 29.5, 24.1 and 77.3 m day−1, respectively. These are similar to values obtained using recent in-situ video imaging in marine environments, but much larger than previous lake sediment trap studies.  相似文献

The small strongly stratified hard-water hypertrophic lake Verevi (max. depth 11.0 m, surface area 12.6 ha, mean depth 3.6 m) was investigated in 2000 and in 2001. The lake is sheltered from winds, and the role of waves in mixing the water column is minimal. Eutrophication favours the strengthening of stratification. Early warm springs cause a fast stagnation of the water column forming partly meromictic conditions. Seston content of water and in sediment traps in 3 layers was measured several times during the formation of stratification. Besides measuring particulate matter, in 2001, the nutrient content of the trapped sediment was analysed. During the first 7 days of the investigation, 30% of the total particle sedimentation took place. The sedimentation rate of particulate matter was 0.4–6.3 g m–2 d−1 dry weight in different layers of the water column. Daily average sedimentation loss rate was 27% of the total amount of seston of the epilimnion, whilst from the meta- and hypolimnion the settling was much slower (9.6 and 7.3%, respectively). In our experiments with twin sediment traps, to one of which formaldehyde was added, the PO43−-P concentration was 19% smaller in the trap without formaldehyde, probably due to planktonic uptake. The relationship between primary and export production is loop-like. The shape was irregular, indicating a high grazing rate of zooplankton.  相似文献

Sedimentation of phosphorus was studied during the spring flood in April and May 1991 in Lake Örträsket and the Öre Estuary, northern Sweden. Lake Örträsket has an area of 7.3 km2 and a mean depth of 22 m and is located 100 km from the coast halfways along the course of the River Öre. The river ends in a semi-closed low salinity estuary with an area of ca. 50 km2 and a mean depth of 16 m. Sedimentation of phosphorus, iron and organic carbon were measured with sediment traps in Lake Örträsket and in the Öre Estuary. Characterization of particulate phosphorus in river water, sediment trap material and sediments were performed by the sequential extraction procedure proposed by Hieltjes & Lijklema (1980). Apart from being an efficient trap for suspended particles including particulate phosphorus, Lake Örträsket was shown to serve as a source for particulate material during spring 1991. The Öre Estuary, on the other hand, constitutes an efficient trap for the total supply of river-borne phosphorus during the spring flood period. Phosphorus was shown to be closely related to iron in particulate material in both the lake and the estuary. Adsorption of phosphorus on settling inorganic particles seems to be an important process, which is particularly pronounced in the estuary.  相似文献

Summary The decomposition ofPhragmites leaves was studied under experimental conditions in vessels during 147 days. This process was compared in vessels filled with (a) lake water, (b) lake water and sediment, and (c) lake water, sediment and plant material.In the course of time the ash-free dry weight and the N and C concentration in the plant material decreased gradually to, respectively, 64, 54 and 66% of the initial values. The P concentration fluctuated due to accumulation of bacteria and their excretion products. Almost all C and N which had disappeared from the plant material during the first 100 days of incubation was recovered in the water. Subsequently, these nutrients accumulated in the sediment. Only 10% of the C and N in the water was soluble (<0.33 m). Ortho-P increased substantially from 60 to 100 days of incubation in the vessels (b) and (c), possibly given off by the sediment or originating from decaying algae and bacteria. Only a minor part of the plant-P was recovered as ortho-P in the water.The effect of the decomposing plant material on the diversity within the microscopical primary producers was studied using paper chromatography of the pigments. The changes in bacterial numbers were followed by epifluorescence microscopy.  相似文献

Contributions of abiotic and biotic processes to the decomposition of floating leaves ofNymphaea elegans were separately evaluated by comparing the rate obtained from anin situ experiment of submerging dry leaf material in a lake, and that from a laboratory experiment of submerging dry leaf material in lake water with a bio-fixing reagent. It took 8 days to decompose 79.4% of the initial dry weight of the floating leaf ofN. elegans in a tropical lake. Of the dry weight loss, 32.9% and 67.1% were atributed to abiotic and biotic decomposition, respectively. The relationship between decomposition rate and the mesh size of the leaf litter bags was examined by the application of a mathematical model. A reasonable value of decomposition loss at an early stage could be obtained using a bag with a mesh opening of 9.9 mm2. The decomposition rate of floating leaves is faster than that of other aquatic plants. Rapid decomposition ofN. elegans leaves may be attributed to the fact that the plant has a low carbon to nitrogen ratio.  相似文献

The Great Ouse estuary in southern England is a macrotidal estuary with rather coarse sediment. Two intertidal sites were sampled five times over the year at low tide. The sediments are suboxic, organic poor (approximately 1.5% organic carbon). They are composed mainly of detrital quartz and feldspar with some calcite. At both sites the total phosphorus in the sediments ranges from 0.03 – 0.12% dry weight and total iron from 0.42–1.22% dry weight. Of the total phosphorus 20% is organic and 80% is inorganic of which 10% is water extractable. Total iron and phosphorus correlate well and the ratio of iron:phosphorus is 8.4 which is similar to that found when phosphorus is adsorbed by iron oxyhydroxides, suggesting that iron oxyhydroxides are an important substrate for phosphorus sorption in these sediments. Fluxes of phosphorus from the sediment to the overlying water, measured in cores incubated in the laboratory, are low and show no seasonality. The sodium concentration in the porewaters at both sites is variable suggesting that there is movement of water through the sediment to depths of at least 20 cm. This is borne out by variable phosphorus, iron and phosphorus concentrations in the porewaters and ill defined redox zones in the sediments.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The overlying water of intact sediment cores was constantly stirred with an impeller at a rate sufficient to mix turbulently the water column and maintain the diffusive boundary layer at a determined thickness. The system allowed standardization of water circulation in laboratory sediment core experiments.
2. Both oxygen concentration and oxygen penetration depth in the sediments decreased, the former by 70% and the latter from 4.2 mm to 2.0 mm, when the overlying water was not stirred for 24 h, as measured with oxygen microelectrodes in a lake sediment core.
3. Oxygen profiles measured in sediment cores in the laboratory were similar to those measured in situ when the overlying water was stirred with an impeller at such a rate that a similar thickness of the diffusive boundary layer at the sediment-water interface developed in the laboratory as that in situ.
4. Sediment oxygen consumption was calculated from: (1) measured oxygen profiles in the diffusive boundary layer and the molecular diffusion coefficient for oxygen in water; (2) the measured oxygen decrease in the top of the sediments and the estimated diffusion coefficient in the sediment; and (3) by oxygen differences in the overlying water after incubation of sediment cores.  相似文献

The surficial sediment (0–10 cm) of shallow eutrophic Lake Võrtsjärv (Estonia) was characterized by an acid insoluble residue of 50% dry weight and low nutrient, Fe and Mn content. Among phosphorus (P) fractions (Hieltjes and Lijklema , 1980), NaOH-NRP amounted on an average to 50%, HCl-RP to 30%, NaOH-RP to 16%, and NH4Cl-RP to 4% of their sum. Seasonal changes in sediment P content were inconsistent with mass balance calculations and could be attributed to sediment redistribution caused by decreasing water level. High Fe/P ratio (26–30) and the aeration of surficial sediment by frequent resuspension kept phosphate adsorbed. Low pore-water SRP (commonly <10 μg l−1) usually prevented phosphate release from surficial sediment. However, a storm in September 1996 (max. wind speed 16 m s−1) which coincided with the extremely low water level in the lake (mean depth 1.44 m), denuded deeper anoxic sediment layers and caused a SRP release of 193 mg P m−2 d−1.  相似文献

Sedimentation and redistribution of fine sediments in three Swedish lakes of different character have been investigated using settling sediment traps. The bottom shear stress from wind generated waves are calculated and the extension of erodable bottom area is related to wind conditions. Wave induced erosion and deposition during and after cessation of storms in different parts of a lake are discussed theoretically. It is shown that a single one year storm may redistribute more bottom material than the accumulated resuspension caused by frequent but smaller wind events. The settling sediment trap deposition and the concentration of suspended solids are related to the extension of erodable bottom area of particular storms. It is found that in lakes where there are relatively large areas of erosion bottoms, resuspended material from the part of the lake most susceptible to strong winds of large fetch constitutes a major part of the settled material on deep bottoms.  相似文献

1. The results of limnological studies on a small, 35-ha, triangular man-made lake and a small adjacent fish pond in the coastal savanna of Ghana are described. 2. The lake, which has a renewal time of approximately 0.96 years, is subject to large, predictable seasonal changes. Water volume and surface area rapidly reach maximum values in the wet season from April to June despite the low runoff values which average only 1.2% of the precipitation. Minimum values occur in the dry season when up to 76% of the lake area may be exposed. Most of the water is lost by evaporation which may amount to 193 cm annually. 3. The annual cycle in water temperature follows that in solar radiation with peaks towards the end of the dry season in March to April and deep troughs in the wet season from April to June. During the dry season the water column is characterized by greater stability, a higher degree of stratification, and a much higher amplitude of diurnal temperature change (4-5°C) than in the wet season (1°C). Isothermal conditions tend to be approached nocturnally and even during the day in the wet season. 4. The ionic content of the water is low and dominated by bicarbonate, sodium, silica and iron. During the wet season flood water results in a decline in conductivity from 214 to 30 μmhos/cm2, a decrease in pH and transparency, and an increase in oxidizable organic material. Except for the conductivity these values return to normal in about 6 weeks as a result of rapid decomposition of allochthonous materials. 5. The oxygen pulse is strong and photosynthetic activity by phytoplankton high during the dry season whereas in the wet season the converse is true. As a result of the low concentration of organic carbon (0.10–0.35%) in the sediments their oxygen demands are low. Consequently, dissolved oxygen values near the sediment are relatively high and oxygen stratification poorly-developed. Most of the organic carbon appears to be recycled in the water column rather than in the sediments as is generally the case in tropical ecosystems. 6. Rooted vegetation became permanently established in the fish pond but not i n the lake itself. Emergent and floating vegetation which grows profusely in the draw-down area in the wet season is for the most part exported from the system by wind and biological agencies and, therefore, contributes little to the energy and mineral budgets of the lake. Primary production in the water column is mainly by Myxophyceae and Bacillariophyceae and is low during the dry season (1.35 gC/m2/day) and very low in the wet season. Possible reasons for the low level of primary production are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

Tharae rate of methane released from the sediment‐water interface and from the surface of the water of Lake Wingra, Madison, Wisconsin, was measured during the summer months for 2 years. The amount of methane escaping the lake is estimated to be an important factor in the carbon budget of the lake. Most rapid methanogenesis was in shallow water (less than 1 m deep) and in the uppermost 5 cm of sediment. The numbers of methanogenic bacteria were estimated by a most probable number technique to vary from approximately 102 to 3 × 104 methanogens per gram of dry weight sediment during winter and summer, respectively.  相似文献

Spatial variations in phosphorus (P) fractionation, sediment geochemistry, and sorptive properties for P are assessed to test the hypothesis that these sediment properties vary within the lake and are governed by different land uses in the watershed. The dynamic equilibrium between P in sediment and water is investigated using sorption–desorption isotherms. Sediments in the littoral zone were rich in iron (Fe), aluminium (Al), and clay material in comparison to sediments from the lake proper and thus had better abilities to sorb and retain P. In the limnetic zone, there was an increasing abundance of primary minerals, and the fraction of apatite-P was high, while the level of total P was low. The amount of labile adsorbed P (LAP) in the littoral sediments varied because of contrasting land use in the sub-catchments draining into different parts of the lake. Sediments in areas where forest streams enter the lake contained significantly more LAP than sediments in areas impacted by agricultural influenced streams. Internal P loading from sediments predominantly originating from forest streams is mainly governed by sediment resuspension. The dominant P pool in sediments near the inlets of agriculturally influenced streams was non-apatite inorganic P, of which the Fe-bound is a potentially important source of P under anoxic conditions.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Phosphorus and nitrogen concentration in the surface sediment was analysed before, during and after fertilization of a small, stratified, subarctic lake. During stratification most (70%) of the added nutrients were deposited in the epilimnion sediment.
2. After 2 years of fertilization there was a significant increase of both nutrients at all water depths, although values were 30–50% higher per square metre in the shallow areas.
3. Nutrient budget calculations based on the sediment analyses showed that 75% of the added phosphorus and 45% of the nitrogen were accumulated in the sediment after fertilization.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The small Lake Negenmad, in the nature reserve 'De Oude Venen', was isolated from the canals and lakes of the Frisian lake system. Its chemistry and phytoplankton were monitored 1 year before (1984) and 2 years after (1985–86) isolation. These characteristics were compared with those of the adjacent Lake Veertigmad which was not manipulated.
2. The hydrological intervention prevented the inflow of chloride-rich IJsselmeer water into Lake Negenmad and made its water table more dependent on evapotranspiration, precipitation and upwelling water. In comparison with the unmanipulated lake. Lake Negenmad became less saline (c. 50%), more humic (c. 50%) and total dissolved (<0.2,μm) iron concentration increased dramatically.
3. During the 2 years of damming no marked differences in the total nutrient concentrations of either lake were observed. However, the maximum phytoplankton density in the dammed lake was half that in the unmanipulated lake. The lower density may have been caused by low P availability after formation of humus-iron phosphate species.
4. Preventing the inflow of water from the Frisian lake system favoured the occurrence in Lake Negenmad of flagellated species (Chrysophyceae, Cryptophyceae) at the expense of filamentous and nuisance-causing cyanobacteria (Oscillutoria, Anabaena, Aphanizomenon spp.).
5. The implications of these results for water quality management of reservoirs in peaty areas are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We compared P retention with direct measures of Psedimentation, estimated fromsediment cores (annual P sedimentation) and sedimenttraps (daily P sedimentation),to quantify P sedimentation in Eau Galle Reservoir,Wisconsin. Mean annual Pretention was similar to mean annual P sedimentation,as estimated from sediment corerates integrated over the entire lake basin,indicating that annual P mass balanceapproximated annual net P sedimentation in thisreservoir. However, sediment trap Prates, measured over the summer stratified period,overestimated P retention ratesdetermined over the same period, suggestingsubstantial deposition of internally-derived P.Inclusion of measured internal P loadings from avariety of sources in EauGalle Reservoir in a P mass balance only accounted foran additional 24% of thesummer sediment trap P rate, indicating substantialuncertainty in the overall P budget.Imbalances in the P budget may also suggest depositionof sediment from other as yetunquantified internal sources.
