Thirteen tooth eruption stages and their corresponding chronological ages are descri bed from a series of giraffe jaws. These can be used for age determination in giraffes with immature dentition. Significant correlations of the lingual crown height ( r =0-957; P < 0001) and lingual occlusal surface width ( r =0-959; P < 0001) with the number of dark staining incremental lines in the cementum of thin decalcified sections of the maxillary first molar were found. The regression equations derived from these relationships provide a further method for determining the age of a giraffe. A composite plate showing maxillary first molar wear patterns provides a means of roughly assigning an age to a particular specimen. Thin sections of undecalcified teeth, mandible measurements, various other indices of tooth wear and eye lens mass were investigated and found unsuitable for age determination in this  相似文献

The depth of the lingual fossa in permanent incisors of Norwegians (plaster casts and extracted teeth) was studied. In the plaster casts the depth of the lingual fossa in the right side incisors was (in mm): I,sup=0.51,I(2)sup= 0.30, I(1)inf =0.07 and I (2)inf =0.08. For 1(1)sup significant bilateral asymmetry was found (p<0.00l). All incisors were positively correlated in the depth of the lingual fossa, mandibular higher than maxillary. In both jaws centrals were better correlated across the midline than laterals, and centrals to laterals were less correlated than centrals to centrals and laterals to laterals. Interjaw correlations of 1(1)sup were higher than interjaw correlations with I(2)sup. Dental field theory is confirmed: The upper lateral and lower central were the most variable incisors in each jaw for lingual fossa depth. The values for this trait in Norwegians are within the Caucasoid range.  相似文献

Two specimens of the peculiar squalid shark,Trigonognathus kabeyai gen. et sp. nov., were collected from the coastal waters of Wakayama and Tokushima, Japan, by bottom trawl at depths of 330 and 360 meters. Shape of teeth similar in both jaws; slender, unicuspid, canine-like, without any cusplets or serrations, with weak thin fold on both lingual and labial sides in anterior teeth on both jaws; tooth at symphysis of each jaw longest. Interspace between teeth very wide. Both jaws triangular in shape. Most of dermal denticles on body and head roughly rhombic, swollen very much near central part, with about 10–40 facets on the dorsal surface of its crown. Preoral snout length very short. Many small organs considered to be photophores present mainly on ventral surfaces of head and body.  相似文献

A piece of polyethylene tubing about 14 cm long, ID 3 mm and with a 1.5 mm wall is shaped to hold grids in a linear series as follows. A series of pairs of transverse cuts I mm apart are made across and about $3/4 through the tubing at intervals of 1 cm. After making diagonal cuts on either side of each pair of cuts, wedge-shaped pieces of tubing are removed to leave free-standing 1 mm widths of the tubing wall. Each arch of wall is then bisected by a cut in the longitudinal direction of the tubing, thus providing the jaws of a clamp for a grid. By spreading the jaws with forceps, the grid can be inserted. On removal of the forceps, the grid is held firmly and when the holder is filled, the grids face in a direction perpendicular to its long dimension. By inserting a piece of glass tubing into the lumen of the holder, it is held straight and can be placed in a test tube for fluid processing. Stains or other fluids can be introduced through the glass tube, thus allowing fluid changes without exposure to air. Carbon coating can be achieved without removing the grids, since they all face the same way. For convenience in loading and unloading, the holder can be temporarily attached to a base with double-coated adhesive tape.  相似文献

The titanium hollow screw reconstruction plate (THORP) system for reconstruction of lower jaw defects provides a functional stable fixation and is used as a long-term or permanent implant in tumor surgery and in traumatology. The rigid fixation of the head of the screw to the plate, avoiding unphysiologic loads to the bone underneath the plate, and the titanium plasma-coated perforated hollow screws, enabling the development of direct bone-titanium contact as well as the ingrowth of bone into the lumen and perforations, are the major advantages of this system compared to conventional systems. The different surgical methods, such as preservation of the condylar process with only two screws, intraoperative freely adjustable condylar prosthesis, lingual application of the plate, and primary bone transplantation, are described. The evaluation of 62 patients reconstructed with the THORP system between 1981 and 1986 revealed no plate loosening, even in irradiated bone, and showed satisfactory aesthetic and functional results.  相似文献

The jaw apparati of Paleozoic and Triassic ammonoids are simìlar in shape to parrots’ beaks; they possess sharp cutting-edges and consist of chitinous material. Together with the similar jaw apparati of recent Coleoids, they constitute the Normal-Type of cephalopod jaws. The jaw apparati of the Jurassic-Cretaceous ammonites possess wide, shovel-like lower jaws without cutting-edges. They consist either of an undivided chitinous plate (Anaptychus) or of this and two additional calcitic plates (Aptychi) on its outer flanks. Jaw apparati of this type are here called Aptychus-Type jaws. New finds in the Upper Cretaceous of Japan suggest the existence of a third type of jaw apparatus which is here called the Rhynchaptychus-Type. Jaws of this type are mainly characterized by possession of calcitic rostra on the tips of the jaws. They seem to be restricted to members of the order Lytoceratacea (excluding the Heteromorphs).  相似文献

Teeth develop in the mammalian embryo via a series of interactions between odontogenic epithelium and neural crest-derived ectomesenchyme of the early jaw primordia. The molecular interactions required to generate a tooth are mediated by families of signalling molecules, which often act reiteratively in both a temporal and spatial manner. Whilst considerable information is now available on how these molecules interact to produce an individual tooth, much less is known about the processes that control overall tooth number within the dentition. However, a number of mouse models are now starting to provide some insight into the mechanisms that achieve this. In particular, co-ordinated restriction of signalling molecule activity is important in ensuring appropriate tooth number and there are different requirements for this suppression in epithelial and mesenchymal tissues, both along different axes of individual jaws and between the jaws themselves. There are a number of fundamental mechanisms that facilitate supernumerary tooth formation in these mice. A key process appears to be the early death of vestigial tooth primordia present in the embryo, achieved through the suppression of Shh signalling within these early teeth. However, restriction of WNT signalling is also important in controlling tooth number, with increased transduction being capable of generating multiple tooth buds from the oral epithelium or existing teeth themselves, in both embryonic and adult tissues. Indeed, uncontrolled activity of this pathway can lead to the formation of odontogenic tumours containing multiple odontogenic tissues and poorly formed teeth. Finally, disrupted patterning along the buccal–lingual aspect of the jaws can produce extra teeth directly from the oral epithelium in a duplicated row. Together, all of these findings have relevance for human populations, where supernumerary teeth are seen in association with both the primary and permanent dentitions. Moreover, they are also providing insight into how successional teeth form in both embryonic and post-natal tissues of the jaws.  相似文献

A newly discovered fossil cephalopod jaw apparatus that may belong to Permian representatives of the Endocochlia is described. Permorhynchus dentatus n. gen. n. sp. is established on the basis of this apparatus. The asymmetry of jaws in the Ectocochlia may be connected with the double function of the ventral jaw apparatus, and the well-developed, relatively large frontal plate of the ventral jaw should be regarded as a feature common to all representatives of ectocochlian cephalopods evolved from early Palaeozoic stock. Distinct features seen in the jaw apparatus of Upper Permian endocochlians include the pronounced beak form of both jaws and the presence of oblong wings on the ventral mandible.  相似文献

<正> Inspired by Dr. Tom Rich's letter inquiring the structure of the roots of tritylodont cheekteeth, we initiated this study. At first, only several isolated teeth were exposed. Later on, jaws and partial skull carrying the dentition have been included.The generic identification of the materials is based mainly on the morphology of the upper postcanine crowns. Among the four genera dealt with in this work, Yunnanodon is unique in having a cusp formula of 2-3-2:2 buccal, 3 median and 2 lingual cusps. From the smaller and a little medially situated posterior cusp of the lingual row, Lufengia could be separated from the other two genera.Bienotheroides is supposed to be distinguished by a cusp formula of 2-2-2, as those in the later tritylodonts: Stereognathus, Bocatherium, etc. However, in fact, this cusp pattern exists only in the type species, B. wanhsienensis. Another species, B. zigongensis from a lower horizon, namely, Lower Shaximiao Formation of Sichuan and Wucaiwan Formation of Xinjiang, possesses a cusp formula of 2-3-3, much similar to that of Bienotherium. Consequently, the localities and horizons are taken as a measure of discriminating those specimens with similar crown pattern, especially the lower postcanine teeth.  相似文献

A new microscopic aschelminth-like animal, Limnognathia maerski nov. gen. et sp., is described from a cold spring at Disko Island, West Greenland, and assigned to Micrognathozoa nov. class. It has a complex of jaws in its pharynx, and the ultrastructure of the main jaws is similar to that of the jaws of advanced scleroperalian gnathostomulids. However, other jaw elements appear also to have characteristics of the trophi of Rotifera. Jaw-like structures are found in other protostome taxa as well-for instance, in proboscises of kalyptorhynch platyhelminths, in dorvilleid polychaetes and aplacophoran mollusks-but studies of their ultrastructure show that none of these jaws is homologous with jaws found in Gnathostomulida, Rotifera, and Micrognathozoa. The latter three groups have recently been joined into the monophylum Gnathifera Ahlrichs, 1995, an interpretation supported by the presence of jaw elements with cuticular rods with osmiophilic cores in all three groups. Such tubular structures are found in the fulcrum of all Rotifera and in several cuticular sclerites of both Gnathostomulida and Micrognathozoa. The gross morphology of the pharyngeal apparatus is similar in the three groups. It consists of a ventral pharyngeal bulb and a dorsal pharyngeal lumen. The absence of pharyngeal ciliation cannot be used as an autapomorphy in the ground pattern of the Gnathifera because the Micrognathozoa has the plesiomorphic alternative with a ciliated pharyngeal epithelium. The body of Limnognathia maerski nov. gen. et sp. consists of a head, thorax, and abdomen. The dorsal and lateral epidermis have plates formed by an intracellular matrix, as in Rotifera and Acanthocephala; however, the epidermis is not syncytial. The ventral epidermis lacks internal plates, but has a cuticular oral plate without ciliary structures. Two ventral rows of multiciliated cells form a locomotory organ. These ciliated cells resemble the ciliophores present in some interstitial annelids. An adhesive ciliated pad is located ventrally close to a caudal plate. As in many marine interstitial animals-e.g., gnathostomulids, gastrotrichs, and polychaetes-a special form of tactile bristles or sensoria is found on the body. Two pairs of protonephridia with unicellular terminal cells are found in the trunk; this unicellular condition may be the plesiomorphic condition in Bilateria. Only specimens with the female reproductive system have been found, indicating that all adult animals are parthenogenetic females. We suggest that 1) jaws of Gnathostomulida, Rotifera, and the new taxon, Micrognathozoa, are homologous structures; 2) Rotifera (including Acanthocephala) and the new group might be sister groups, while Gnathostomulida could be the sister-group to this assemblage; and 3) the similarities to certain gastrotrichs and interstitial polychaetes are convergent.  相似文献

ObjectiveThis study used con-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to investigate the prevalence and severity of alveolar bone loss in middle-aged (40–59 years) Chinese with chronic periodontitis.ResultsThe study revealed that 40–59 year old patients with chronic periodontitis had severe bone loss. At 5,286 sites (34.7%), alveolar bone loss was mild; severe alveolar bone loss was found at 5,978 sites (39.2%). A comparison of bone loss in different jaws revealed that the area with the highest degree of bone loss was on the lingual side of the maxillary molar (56.3 ± 7.2%), and that the area with the lowest degree was primarily on the lingual side of the mandibular canine (27.5 ± 6.3%). There was a lower degree of alveolar bone loss in males than females. Differences were observed when comparing the incidence of bone loss between males and females (P < 0.05). Menopause in females and smoking in both genders may affect the level of bone loss. Male smokers experienced a greater degree of bone loss (41.67 ± 5.76%) than male non-smokers (32.95 ± 4.31%). A 42.23 ± 6.34% bone loss was found in menopausal females versus 31.35 ± 3.62% in non-menopausal females.ConclusionsThe study revealed that different sites and teeth exhibited a diverse degree of bone loss. In middle-aged patients with chronic periodontitis, the highest degrees of bone loss in the incisors, premolars, and molars were on the lingual side, mesial side and lingual side, respectively. Menopause in females and smoking may affect the level of bone loss.  相似文献

Use of the tongue as a prehensile organ during the ingestion stage of feeding in lizards was studied cinegraphically in seven species. Within Squamata, lingual prehension is limited to a single clade, the Iguania (Iguanidae, Agamidae and Chamaeleontidae), which includes all 'fleshy-tongued' lizards. All remaining squamates (Scleroglossa) use the jaws alone for prey prehension. Lingual prehension and a 'fleshy' tongue are primitive squamate characteristics. Kinematically, lingual ingestion cycles are similar to previously described transport cycles in having slow open, fast open, fast close and slow close-power stroke phases. Tongue movements are sequentially correlated with jaw movements as they are in transport. However, during ingestion, anterior movement of the tongue includes an extra-oral, as well as intra-oral component. Tongue protrusion results in a pronounced slow open-II phase at a large gape distance. A high degree of variability in quantitative aspects of ingestion and transport cycles suggests that modulation through sensory feedback is an important aspect of lizard feeding. Preliminary evidence indicates an important role for hyoid movement in tongue protrusion. Our results are consistent with the Bramble & Wake (1985) model generalized feeding cycle and support their contention that specialized feeding mechanisms often represent modifications of a basic pattern, particularly modification of the slow open phase.  相似文献

An electron microscopic study of sporulation of Bacillus larvae, a honeybee pathogen, in TMYGP broth (D. W. Dingman and D. P. Stahly, Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 46:860-869, 1983) was conducted. No parasporal structures were evident in the sporangial cytoplasm. The stages of sporulation were similar to those observed in other sporeformers. A rather unusual inner coat layer consisting of seven lamellae was apparent.  相似文献

Diencephalic, mesencephalic and metencephalic neural crest cells are skeletogenic and derive from neural folds that do not express Hox genes. In order to examine the influence of Hox gene expression on skull morphogenesis, expression of Hoxa2, Hoxa3 and Hoxb4 in conjunction with that of the green fluorescent protein has been selectively targeted to the Hox-negative neural folds of the avian embryo prior to the onset of crest cell emigration. Hoxa2 expression precludes the development of the entire facial skeleton. Transgenic Hoxa2 embryos such as those from which the Hox-negative domain of the cephalic neural crest has been removed have no upper or lower jaws and no frontonasal structures. Embryos subjected to the forced expression of Hoxa3 and Hoxb4 show severe defects in the facial skeleton but not a complete absence of facial cartilage. Hoxa3 prevents the formation of the skeleton derived from the first branchial arch, but allows the development (albeit reduced) of the nasal septum. Hoxb4, by contrast, hampers the formation of the nasal bud-derived skeleton, while allowing that of a proximal (but not distal) segment of the lower jaw. The combined effect of Hoxa3 and Hoxb4 prevents the formation of facial skeletal structures, comparable with Hoxa2. None of these genes impairs the formation of neural derivatives of the crest. These results suggest that over the course of evolution, the absence of Hox gene expression in the anterior part of the chordate embryo was crucial in the vertebrate phylum for the development of a face, jaws and brain case, and, hence, also for that of the forebrain.  相似文献

Two months after hatching, the fibers of the jaw muscles of the American alligator are associated with three types of nerve terminals namely, plates, simple plates, and grape endings. Simple plate endings are mainly observed on the small muscle fibers. Grape-type endings are found on muscle fibers that resemble the tonic fibers of garter snakes (Hess, Am. J. Anat., '63). Most terminals are plate endings and account for 53.7–74.7% of terminals per muscle. Fibers with grape-type endings were found in all the jaw muscles studied; they lack well organized T-systems, M-lines, and post-junctional sarcolemmal folds, as well as irregularly distributed small of fibrils, and zigzag Z-lines. The properties of nerve endings of the American alligator indicate that M. depressor mandibulae, M. pseudotemporalis, and M. pterygoideus posterior have primary roles in jaw movements. M. pterygoideus anterior and M. intramandibularis contribute mainly to postural adjustments of the jaws. The multiplicity of nerve terminals in the jaw muscles of American alligators contrasts with the simple movements of their jaws. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The present paper studies the possibly different feeding strategies of Diplodus sargus to crustaceans, molluscs, worms, and small fish. The buccal jaws are built strongly and bound together by numerous ligaments. The dentition is heterodont: incisors in front and molars in the middle and hind parts. The principal originality of the musculature of this species is the forward insertion of the adductores mandibulae. These are very thick and insert on both the upper and lower jaws, so that contraction of any individual muscle acts on the buccal pieces as a whole, which thus constitute a remarkable crushing device. The pharyngeal jaws are frail as in primitive perciforms: the lower ones are well separated, being bound only anteriorly, while the upper ones consist of the second and third pharyngobranchials and a posterior toothed plate. When feeding on crabs, Diplodus sargus always sucks in the prey and seizes it with the buccal jaws. Mouth opening is accompanied by extensive protrusion of the mouth, with or without neurocranial elevation. Mouth sucking and seizing movements vary little. Once seized, the prey is usually moved to the molars and crushed. The crushing movements may be fast and ample or slow. In the latter case, deformation of the prey is observable. Crushing usually results in the crab being broken into pieces. The pharyngeal jaws grip one part of the prey and shift it to the oesophagus, then seize the second part. Diplodus sargus adapts its feeding behaviour to the type of prey. A snail, for instance, is crushed by the buccal or pharyngeal teeth, the pieces of shell are ejected, and the soft parts conveyed with difficulty to the oesophagus by the pharyngeal jaws. A fish on the other hand, is sucked tail first into the mouth cavity and quickly shifted to the digestive tract by the pharyngeal bones. Behaviour toward different prey differs by the presence or absence of parts of the sequence of feeding movements (for example crushing) or by the fact that certain movements or parts of the sequence are repeated. The variability of any movement in the sequence is the same whatever the sort of prey. Crushing occurs between the buccal incisors and molars and was observed twice between the pharyngeal teeth. Usually, it seems, the latter are involved in transport only. In transport, the left and right pharyngeal jaws may perform different functions: their movements, unlike the symmetrical movements of the buccal jaws, sometimes differ.  相似文献

Jaws of various kinds occur in virtually all groups of Mollusca, except for Polyplacophora and Bivalvia. Molluscan jaws are formed by the buccal epithelium and either constitute a single plate, a paired formation or a serial structure. Buccal ectodermal structures in gastropods are rather different. They can be nonrenewable or having final growth, like the hooks in Clione (Gastropoda, Gymnosomata). In this case, they are formed by a single cell. Conversely, they can be renewable during the entire life span and in this case they are formed by a set of cells, like the formation of the radula. The fine structure of the jaws was studied in the gastropod Puncturella noachina. The jaw is situated in the buccal cavity and consists of paired elongated cuticular plates. On the anterior edge of each cuticular plate there are numerous longitudinally oriented rodlets disposed over the entire jaw surface and immersed into a cuticular matrix. The jaw can be divided into four zones situated successively toward the anterior edge: 1) the posterior area: the zone of formation of the thick cuticle covering the entire jaw and forming the electron‐dense outer layer of the jaw plate; 2) the zone of rodlet formation; 3) the zone of rodlet arrangement; and 4) the anterior zone: the free scraping edge of the plate, or the erosion zone. In the general pattern of jaw formation, Puncturella noachina resembles Testudinalia tessulata (Patellogastropoda) studied previously. The basis of the jaw is a cuticular plate formed by the activity of the strongly developed microvillar apparatus of the gnathoepithelium. However, the mechanism of renewal of the jaw anterior part in P. noachina is much more complex as its scraping edge consists not just of a thick cuticular matrix rather than of a system of denticles being the projecting endings of rodlets. Prevalence of removable partial dentures users treated at the Aracatuba Dental School – UNESP Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of removable partial dentures (RPD) at the Aracatuba Dental School. Methods: The study was conducted by analysing 412 clinical history of patients attended at the RPD clinics in the period from 2000 to 2007. Results: 412 charts were analysed: 148 (35.9%) men and 264 (64.1%) women. The mean age was 53.8 years (men) and 52.4 years (women). A total of 556 dentures were made; of these, 233 (41.90%) were maxillary and 323 (58.09%) were mandibular dentures. The most frequent Kennedy classification found was Class III (maxilla) and Class I (mandible). In the maxilla, 55% (126) of the major connectors were of the anterior–posterior palatal bar, while in the mandible, 64% (202) were the lingual bar. As regards the claps, 401 were circumferential and 318 were bar claps. Conclusion: The mean age of the patients was 52.9 years with higher prevalence of female patients; the most frequent Kennedy’s classification was Class I in mandible and Class III in maxilla; the most common major connector was anterior–posterior palatal bar for maxilla and lingual bar for mandible; the circumferential clasps were the most common retainer used in both jaws.  相似文献
