Cheek pouches, one of the distinguishing characters of the Cercopithecinae, are structures used for the temporary storage of food. Their size and frequency of use within a given species are related primarily to the amount of conspecific competition for food. In relation to total body size, members of the genusPapio are considered to have relatively small cheek pouches which are said to be used only occasionally to maximize food harvest when local clusters of food are encountered. This investigation represents 165 hours of observation on a troop ofPapio ursinus at Mkuzi Game Reserve in Natal, South Africa. At the time of observation the choice of foods in the home range was restricted and usually found in abundance only in small clusters of trees. Given that conspecific competition would have been pronounced under these conditions, it was thought that any differences in the frequency of cheek pouch use related to age, sex, rank, or the reproductive state of an animal would be readily recognizable. The results indicated that cheek pouches were used differentially throughout the day, with virtually all ages of each sex displaying the same general pattern of maximal cheek pouch use during the middle of the day. In each sex there was an age graded diminution of the frequency of cheek pouch use from juveniles to adults. This trend was more pronounced in males resulting in a substantial sex difference in the use of cheek pouches between adult males and females. In addition, there was some indication that differences in the frequency of cheek pouch use between adult males were correlated with rank. Although a pattern of cheek pouch use and rank was not evident amongst adult females, there was an association between reproductive state and the frequency of cheek pouch use. Overall, body size, dominance, and energetic demands appeared to be the most significant factors underlying the differences in cheek pouch use in this troop.  相似文献

Rodents of the family Heteromyidae are proficient gatherers and hoarders of seeds. A major component of their adaptive specialization for harvesting and transporting seeds is their spacious, fur-lined cheek pouches. Precise measurements of cheek pouch capacities are essential if ecologists are to understand the foraging ecology, possible constraints on locomotion patterns, and competitive relationships of heteromyid rodents. To measure the size of these cheek pouches and the rate at which animals load seeds into their pouches during seed harvest, we attracted 56 individuals representing ten species of heteromyid rodents to bait stations in the field and allowed them to fill their cheek pouches with seeds several times while we observed and timed the events with the aid of night-vision equipment. The largest load taken by each individual was used as an estimate of its cheek pouch capacity. At the end of observations, each subject was captured and its mass and other data gathered. The allometric relationship between cheek pouch capacity and body mass for ten species of heteromyids was significant [pouch capacity (ml) = 0.148 body mass (g)0.992, r 2=0.91, P<0.0001]. The regression coefficient is ≈1.0, which indicates that the volume of the cheek pouches scales in direct proportion to body size. When the data were subdivided into quadrupeds (Perognathus and Chaetodipus) and bipeds (Dipodomys) (n=5 for each), the relationships between pouch capacity and body mass were significant, but the two regressions were not significantly different from each other. When all loads (full and partial) were considered, subjects filled their cheek pouches an average of 93 ± 10% of pouch capacity (n=185). Cheek pouch capacities from published studies of artificially filled pouches of heteromyids in the laboratory averaged about 40% below the field measurements obtained here. The allometric relationship between mean loading rate and body mass was also significant [seeds/s=1.067 bodymass (g)0.830, r 2=0.85,P=0.0011), but when quadrupeds and bipeds were considered separately, the relationships were not significant. Seed densities and bulk densities were used to calculate packing coefficients for seed species, which, when used in conjunction with the allometric relationship between cheek pouch capacity and body size, can be used to estimate the maximum load carried by a heteromyid. Except for the very largest kangaroo rat species, a full pouch load of Indian ricegrass seeds represents less than the daily energy requirements of an active heteromyid. The internal and external cheek pouches found in certain rodents arise early in development by an evagination of the buccal epithelium. Differences in the epithelial evaginations that produce the internal pouches of the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) and least chipmunk (Eutamias minimus) are consistent with the view that they evolved independently. The external cheek pouches of rodents of the superfamily Geomyoidea represent a macroevolutionary phenotype when compared to the internal pouches of other rodents. Externalization of an internal pouch rudiment found in the geomyoids Dipodomys and Thomomys can be explained by a simple change early in its development, the effect of which is greatly magnified by facial growth. In this example, the traditional dichotomy between microevolutonary and macroevolutionary theories is bridged by an understunding of developmental dynamics.  相似文献

Forest guenons (Cercopithecus spp.) are often found in polyspecific associations that may decrease predator risk while increasing interspecific competition for food. Cheek pouch use may mitigate interspecific competition and predator risk by reducing the time spent in areas of high competition/predator risk. I investigated these ideas in three forest guenons: Campbell’s monkey (Cercopithecus campbelli), spot-nosed monkey (C. petaurista), and Diana monkey (C. diana). I present 13 months of scan sample data from Taï Forest, Côte d’Ivoire, including 3,675, 3,330, and 5,689 records of cheek pouch distention, to quantify cheek pouch use, for Campbell’s, spot-nosed, and Diana monkeys, respectively. Cheek pouches are often used to hold fruit, so I first predicted that the most frugivorous species, Diana monkeys, would have the most cheek pouch distension. Spot-nosed monkeys ate the least amount of fruit over the study period and had the least distended cheek pouches, suggesting the importance of frugivory in relation to cheek pouch distension for this species. This was not a sufficient explanation for Campbell’s monkeys; Campbell’s ate fruit less than Diana monkeys, but had more distended cheek pouches, suggesting that cheek pouch use was not simply a reflection of high frugivory. From the interspecific competition hypothesis, I predicted that Campbell’s monkeys would have more distended cheek pouches than Diana and spot-nosed monkeys, and more distended cheek pouches when associated with Diana because Campbell’s monkeys have the highest potential for interspecific competition with dominant Diana monkeys. From the predator risk hypothesis, I predicted that Campbell’s would have more distended cheek pouches when not associated with highly vigilant Diana monkeys. Campbell’s monkeys had the most distended cheek pouches overall, but had more distended cheek pouches when not in association with Diana, suggesting the greater importance of predator risk rather than interspecific competition in Campbell’s cheek pouch use.  相似文献

Reports of cercopithecine cheek pouch use and functional significance are largely anecdotal, and to date there have been no investigations into its use by species living in closed forest habitats. Here, I report on cheek pouch use in Cercopithecus ascanius and Lophocebus albigena in the Kibale National Park, Uganda, between July-October 1997. Two hypotheses were evaluated: this feature was selected for because of its role in 1) increasing feeding efficiency via a reduction in potential feeding competition, and/or 2) reducing vulnerability to predation. Results indicate that both species were more likely to use their cheek pouches when feeding on contestable foods and, after filling cheek pouches, retreated to more densely vegetated ("safer") positions for processing food. There was no influence of age and sex on L. albigena cheek pouch use. Subadult C. ascanius cheek-pouched less frequently than adults, although there were no differences between adult males and females. There was no relationship between feeding-patch size and number of plant food items cheek-pouched in either species. However, the diameter of breast height (dbh; a measure of patch size) of trees in which C. ascanius used their cheek pouches was significantly larger than the dbh of trees in which they did not. Both species were more likely to use their cheek pouches in the presence of greater numbers of conspecifics. These data provide insight into the relationship(s) among oral anatomy and feeding efficiency, and facilitate understanding into the selection for this important oral feature in stem cercopithecines.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to investigate the diet and relative abundance of fruit bats in a lowland Malaysian rain forest and to test the hypothesis that the local assemblage structure of fruit bats varies significantly over time in relation to the availability of food. In total, 352 fruit bats of eight species were captured during 72,306 m2 mist‐net hours of sampling between February 1996 and September 1999. Three species of fruit bats (Balionycteris maculita, Chironax melanocephalus, and Cynopterus brachyotis) that fed on a wide range of “steady state” and “big bang” food resources were captured continuously throughout the study period, with no significant variation in capture rates over time. In contrast, five species that fed exclusively or almost exclusively on “big bang” food resources were sampled intermittently, with significant temporal variation in the capture rates of two species (Cynopterus horsfieldi and Megaerops ecaudatus). Significant variation in the capture rates of the remaining three species (Dyacopterus spadiceus, Eonycteris spelaea, and Rousettus amplexicaudatus) could not be detected due to small sample sizes. Since ephemeral “big bang” food resources were only sporadically available within the study area and were associated with large canopy trees and strangler figs, these results suggest that food abundance, or the availability of specific food items, may be important factors limiting local fruit bat species diversity in old‐growth Paleotropical rain forest. Thus, only three fruit bat species were locally resident within the forest throughout the study period. Therefore, further studies on the ranging behavior and habitat requirements of Malaysian fruit bats are required to assess the adequacy of existing reserves and protected areas.  相似文献

  • 1 A study was made of the population dynamics of benthic cladocerans in the River Thames, U.K. These included three species of Chydoridae (Alona affinis Leydig, Disparalona rostrata (Koch 1841) and Leydigia leydigi Schodler) and one species of Macrothricidae Iliocryptus sordidus (Lievan).
  • 2 The pattern of chydorid abundance was similar to that found in many lakes: a midsummer peak followed by a sharp decrease in numbers and subsequent low abundance. This was caused by a temporary decrease in natality, possibly due to food limitation, and a more permanent increase in mortality, thought to be due to predation.
  • 3 Iliocryptus sordidus differed considerably from the chydorids, the major population peak occurring in the autumn. The lifestyle and adult size of Iliocryptus sordidus (Lievan) must render adults less vulnerable to invertebrate and fish fry predation.
  • 4 A literature survey showed that the assemblage of species found in the unvegetated littoral of lakes and rivers included a taxocene of cladocerans.

Little is known about the biology of long-tailed cuckoos (Eudynamys taitensis). In this study, 79 dead cuckoos, mostly from the wider Auckland region, New Zealand, were examined and dissected to shed light on the sex ratio, morphology, breeding season and diet. There were no statistically significant sexual differences in the means for weight or body measurements. However, immature birds had significantly shorter bill, wing and tail lengths than adults. In adults, gonads were enlarged (for breeding) from October to January, while all cuckoos identified (from plumage) as immatures had small gonads. Of 888 food items identified from 62 gizzards, 94% were insects. The main foods were cicadas and shield-bugs (Hemiptera, 48% of food items), stick-insects (Phasmatodea, 19%) and wētās and katydids (Orthoptera, 13%). Small vertebrates (lizards and birds’ eggs and nestlings) were a minor dietary element (1% of food items; 13% of stomachs). Cicadas, stick-insects and praying mantids (large insects abundant in late summer) made up 57% of the immature diet; in adults these three categories made up just 13% of food items. Immatures leave New Zealand on migration several months after adults, and this delay in late summer and autumn coincides with an opportunity to exploit a seasonal abundance of large insects.  相似文献

Sex differences in the quality and quantity of food loads brought to little auk (Alle alle) chicks were investigated in a large colony in Hornsund (South Spitsbergen). Adults returning to the colony were caught in mist-nets and food loads were taken from their gular pouch. The sex of each bird was determined by means of molecular methods. Females brought significantly more food per single load than males in terms of wet weight (30% more on average), number of prey items (46%) and energy contents (39%). However, there was no difference between the sexes in the size of prey taken. Energy-rich Calanus glacialis, originating from cold Arctic waters, was the most frequent prey item and made up the majority of food loads brought by both males and females (75 and 72%, respectively). This indicates that both sexes forage mainly in Arctic waters. However, differences in the proportion of cold water Calanus species (C. glacialis and C. hyperboreus), warm water Calanus species (C. finmarchicus), as well as other taxa, between males and females may suggest different ways of exploiting the feeding area.  相似文献

Diet analysis allows exploring how coastal dolphins interact with the environment and their role in the marine food webs. We studied the diet and feeding ecology of the Guiana dolphin, Sotalia guianensis, through analysis of stomach content from 42 animals stranded on the eastern coast of Brazil. A total of 1,336 semidigested prey items (fish, otoliths, cephalopod beaks, and crustaceans) were identified. Teleost fish comprised the most frequent food item (92% of the total), followed by cephalopods, and crustaceans. Prey belonged to 34 taxa and richness in individual stomachs varied from 1 to 15 prey taxa. Prey were generally small, but showed a significant trend to increase in size with dolphin length. The main prey of Guiana dolphins were demersal, estuarine, and sound-making fish such as catfish and sciaenids. No sex-related differences in diet were found. Diet composition varied seasonally and occurrence of prey items was coherent with breeding or high abundance periods of some fish species and squids. Our study shows the importance of demersal prey from estuarine and soft-sediment habitats to Guiana dolphin in the Abrolhos Bank and reveals that feeding habits are generalist and opportunistic, with diet reflecting the seasonal abundance and availability of prey.  相似文献

Synopsis The food and feeding habits of Clarias mossambicus in four habitat types in the northern Lake Victoria basin were studied. The importance of certain food types to this species varies from area to area. In the lake, rivers and swamps, C. mossambicus fed mainly on fish, particularly Haplochromis species. In the sewage ponds, Crustacea and insects were the main food items. The extent of ingestion by C. mossambicus of a given food type presumably reflects the availability and abundance of the food in the habitat. This constitutes a shift in the food habits which is of vital importance in this migratory fish. The only feeding habitats available to African lily trotters, Actophilornis africanus (Gmelin), at Lake Naivasha are mats of the alien water fern, Salvinia molesta Mitch. This has replaced the native floating leaved water lily beds. Lily trotters were able to use these mats, taking invertebrate food items from the surface or turning plants over and pecking at the rootlets. Pecking rates and turning rates responded to the nature of the available food, with pecking rates high and turning rates low when terrestrial arthropods were found on the mat surface. Both pecking rates and turning rates were low when large aquatic food items, such as the swamp worm (Alma emeni Michaelsen), were available. Pecking rates and turning rates were both high when the predominant food items were aquatic insect larvae. The largest of these (hydrophilid larvae) were taken in preference to the smaller but commoner chironomid larvae. Colonization of the mats of S. molesta by invertebrates was low if the mats were affected by wind action but higher if they were constrained by enclosure or stranding; mats with higher invertebrate densities supported more feeding lily trotters.  相似文献

At-sea distribution of seabirds has been studied on different scales and with different focus in many parts of the world. However, factors and/or processes causing certain patterns are often not easily explained. This also holds true for fast migrating species of international conservation concern, such as the little gull (Larus minutus) in the German Bight (southeastern North Sea). In this study, we used multiyear distributional data in combination with behavioural observations and food sampling to investigate spatial and temporal patterns and their possible causes during spring migration. The results show a highly focussed migration pattern during the last week of April and the first week of May. The river Eider seemed to play an important role as main migration route. Highest numbers were found either close to the mainland or close to the offshore islands. Little gulls used certain subareas for intense feeding (i.e. the region near Helgoland and the outlet of river Elbe) and others for migration. Hydrographic phenomena such as fronts and foam lines play an important role within the feeding sites and strongly influence behaviour and distribution. Feeding behaviour as well as samples of probable prey revealed different quality of feeding sites according to the energy density of the most abundant probable food items (drowned insects versus zooplankton and fish). In conclusion, the area utilisation of L. minutus during spring migration in the German Bight showed a clear pattern, and sites with main feeding action should be regarded as sensitive for little gulls, at least during spring migration.  相似文献

Asian small-clawed river otters (Aonyx cinerea) were given the opportunity to hunt for and capture live crickets (Acheta domestica) in a public interactive display. The otters learned the experimental routine during the first day of exposure. Different response levels were recorded at each of three capture sites, A, B, and C. The animals showed continued motivation for hunting despite the fact that there was no deprivation and the crickets represented an insignificant part of the diet. Besides live crickets, other items—cat food, dead crickets, and gelatin capsules—were introduced for five days each. The otters made the most captures per opportunity for live crickets, followed, in order of preference, by dead crickets, cat food, and gelatin capsules. Although gelatin capsules were found to be the least motivating prey item, the otters hunted for them whenever they were offered. Thus, any active opportunity to produce a change in their environment was rewarding to the otters.  相似文献

Ecological aspects of the mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) were studied in the Luquillo Mountains, a rain forest region in eastern Puerto Rico. Information was obtained by removal trapping of mongoose from grids placed in tree plantations, colorado and tabonuco forests. Trapping efficiency was two mongoose per 100 trap-days, suggesting mongoose abundance is low in wet montane forests of Puerto Rico. Sex ratio was biased (2.6:1) in favor of males. Body masses of male mongoose inhabiting rain forests of the Luquillo Mountains were larger than those in dry forests at Guánica (P < 0.0001). Stomach contents from 18 mongoose were examined, animal matter comprised 75 percent of the total food items encountered. Of these, 33 percent were from vertebrates. The food items most frequently encountered were lizards (Anolis spp.), centipedes (Scolopendra spp.), and cockroaches (Blatellidae).  相似文献

Effects of population fluctuation of the gray-sided vole(Clethrionomys rufocanus) on the prevalence (infection rates) of the parasiteEchinococcus multilocularis in red fox(Vulpes vulpes) populations was investigated from 1985 to 1992 in eastern Hokkaido (Abashiri, Nemuro, and Kushiro area), Japan. This parasite needs two hosts to complete its life cycle; the gray-sided vole as its intermediate host and the red fox as its final host. We found that: (1) Infection rates in foxes depended on the current-year abundance of voles in all three study areas, particularly in Abashiri. (2) In addition to this direct density-dependence, delayed density-dependence between the infection rate and the prior-year abundance of voles was detected in Nemuro and in Kushiro. (3) The regional differences in density-dependence pattern were related to regional differences in the winter food habits of red foxes: in Abashiri the proportion of voles in the fox’s diet greatly decreases in winter, while the proportion remains high in winter in Nemuro and in Kushiro, probably because of shallower snowpack. These results suggest that infection rates in foxes in Abashiri were less influenced by the prior-year prevalence, since the infection cycle might be interrupted in winter, when voles became less important in fox’s diet. In contrast, the state of the prevalence may carry over from year to year in Nemuro and in Kushiro, because red foxes continue to eat a considerable amount of voles throughout year. The regionally contrasted results for the relationship between infection rate in foxes and vole abundance were parallel to the regional difference in fluctuation pattern of vole populations, which are highly variable in Abashiri area, but less variable in Kushiro-Nemuro area. Drastic change in vole populations appears to affect the host-parasite system.  相似文献

In this work, we analyse cheek teeth crown complexity through the calculation of fractal dimension in the giant caviomorph rodent Eumegamys paranensis (Late Miocene of Argentina) and evaluate its functional significance. Our results indicate that, in all teeth of Eumegamys paranensis, the fractal dimension was around 1.5, similar to the Koch quadratic curve type two. The anterior portions of the molars, with the highest values of fractal dimension, are interpreted as areas that supported greater occlusal pressures. Crown complexity in E. paranensis is related to the increased mechanical capacity to process relatively demanding food items and to allow more food to be divided in each masticatory cycle. Eumegamys paranensis would have been a mixed feeder, consuming a variable diet obtained close to the ground. This feeding behaviour is compatible with the heterogeneous environment inferred for the Mesopotamic area during the Late Miocene. E. paranensis was probably a wide ranging species, being able to eat close to water bodies and in gallery forests that occurred in the surrounding of the pre‐Paraná river system.  相似文献

Interactions between the larvae of Mirogrex terraesanctae (Steinitz, 1952) in Lake Kinneret, Israel, and their zooplankton prey were studied experimentally. Prey species preference and size selectivities were measured. Larvae were hatched in the lab from eggs collected in the field, and fed different food items in various concentrations. The food items included lake zooplankton, algae, and commercial pellets. It was shown that small, first feeding larvae (7–8.5 mm SL) prefer small bodied zooplankters (< 180 µ). The effect of these food sources on larval growth was measured. It was found that larval Mirogrex grew at a higher rate when fed zooplankton prey sized from 63 µ–250 µ. Food items smaller than 63 µ, larger than 250 µ and Scenedesmus sp., produced less than optimal growth rates. The importance of Mirogrex feeding habits and their potential influence on the Kinneret ecosystem is considered.  相似文献

Evaluation of the success of ecosystem restoration projects requires identification of appropriate ecological metrics. Comparison of reconstructed food webs (or subsets thereof) from restored and non‐restored habitats may be a valuable tool to evaluate restoration success because food webs help identify critical predator–prey relationships, keystone species, relative importance of direct and indirect trophic interactions, and other aspects of ecological function. We compared the diets of apex predatory fishes collected from enhanced and non‐enhanced portions of the channelized Kissimmee River, Florida, USA to determine whether food web structure responded to experimental hydrologic manipulations. Diets were reconstructed for black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), bowfin (Amia calva), chain pickerel (Esox niger), Florida gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), and warmouth (Lepomis gulosus) collected from enhanced and non‐enhanced portions of the Kissimmee River. Prey eaten by apex predatory fishes in the enhanced portion of the Kissimmee River were quantitatively and qualitatively different from prey eaten in non‐enhanced portions of the river. Predators in the enhanced portion of the river had fewer empty stomachs, more prey items per individual, more prey types per individual, more fish prey per individual, greater overall richness of prey, and a multivariate suite of prey distinct from predators in non‐enhanced portions of the river. Results from hydrologic manipulations suggest that large‐scale restoration of hydrologic linkages between the main channel and floodplain habitats will positively affect food web structure and ecosystem function in the Kissimmee River.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial patterns of abundance of the flatfish community in the Mondego estuary were investigated from 2003 to 2007, based on monthly beam trawl samples. During the study period there was a severe drought, with consequential reductions in river runoff. A total of eight flatfish species occurred within the estuary, with seasonal specific richness and abundance varying considerably. It was possible to identify three main groups: one composed of species present throughout the study period and in high densities: Platichthys flesus and Solea solea (maximum densities 3.7 and 4.1 Ind 1000 m?2, respectively); a second group of less abundant but regularly present species: Scophthalmus rhombus and Solea senegalensis (maximum densities 0.2 and 0.3 Ind 1000 m?2, respectively); and a third group of occasional species that occurred only during the drought period: Arnoglossus laterna, Buglossidium luteum, Dicologlossa hexophthalma and Pegusa lascaris. Flatfish distribution patterns varied according to the estuarine use guild: marine‐estuarine dependent fish occurred mainly in the upper reaches, while marine stragglers and marine‐estuarine opportunists occurred mostly in the downstream areas. Species with more northern latitudinal affinities were the most affected by the drought, related with a lesser extent of river plumes to the coastal area, resulting in a reduction in half of the abundance levels. However, flatfish species with more southern affinities increased in abundance during the drought, benefiting also from an increase in estuarine water temperature. Early summer salinity and precipitation values were good proxies for estimating abundance levels of P. flesus and S. solea, respectively, emphasizing the importance of hydrodynamics for the recruitment and abundance of these commercially important species.  相似文献
