Acanthobrama terraesanctae (local name lavnun), an endemic planktivorous cyprinid, dominates total fish numbers (>80%) in Lake Kinneret, and may have a significant top-down impact on the lake ecosystem. The length of young-of-the-year fish calculated from the von Bertalanffy equation agreed with field observations of juvenile growth. An unusual bi-modal length-frequency distribution observed in May 1993 provided additional help in age identification. Males grew more slowly than females and reached a lower maximum length. Total mortality coefficients (exponents) of males and females >12 cm (minimal legal size of fish in the catch) were similar ( c. 1·52). An average cohort reaches maximum biomass during its second year. Maximum production is created at the end of the second year. The production: biomass ratio of the population was 1·16, and 36% of total lavnun standing stock was taken by fishing. From the late 1980s to early 1990s, when standing stock and population structure were stable, the average harvest of 1000 t was consistent with a total lavnun biomass of 2800 t, which constitutes 50–70% of the total fish stock measured acoustically in the lake. Such a biomass could be sustained by the known production of zooplankton. Absence of verified growth data for lavnun contributed to the collapse of the fishery in 1993, because it hampered timely revision of fishery policy in response to the drastic changes in the lavnun stock in 1992.  相似文献

This paper examines the effect of lake characteristics on population density and how this variation affects growth, mortality and population size structure of brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis. The study was conducted on 17 recreationally fished, reproductively isolated boreal forest lakes in Newfoundland, Canada from 1993 to 2000. A standardized sampling program, the Fyke Littoral Index Netting program (FLIN) was used to collected data that describes brook trout population parameters and life history attributes. Regression analyses showed significant relationships between fish density and biomass and characteristics of the lakes. Variation in fish density and biomass was explained by lake surface area and littoral habitat area. Significant relationships were found when growth, mortality and size structure were regressed against density. The proportional stock distribution and theoretical maximum size of brook trout were negatively related to density, and natural mortality was positively related to density. The largest maximum length and highest proportional stock densities occurred at brook trout densities of less than 30 fish/ha. In general, the higher the proportion of littoral habitat area the higher the densities of brook trout, which correspondingly had important effects on growth, natural mortality and size structure of the brook trout populations. This information is critical to the development of management strategies aimed at altering size distribution to produce specific fisheries management outcomes.  相似文献

Age, growth and reproduction of rock gurnard in the Saronikos Gulf (Greece) were studied. Otoliths from 638 specimens (sex combined) were read for age determination. The body length-otolith radius relationship was found linear (L = -18.0 + 4.99 xR; where L = fish length in mm, R = otolith radius 20 X). The life span of females seemed to be longer than that of males, indicating a differential mortality with sex. The growth was lower than that in the Catalane Sea. The maximum age of fish collected was VIII and the maximum fork length estimated by von Bertalanffy equation was 356 mm. Weight increased as the 3.054252 power or the length. Reproduction was observed to take place between winter and early spring and occasionally in early winter. Males began to mature after completion of the second year and the females after the third. The exploitation rate was rather high, which suggests that the rock gurnard stock was overfished in Saronikos Gulf. The male to female ratio was usually 1:1.  相似文献

Young rainbow trout were propagated from adults collected from above and below a water-fall, impassable to upstream fish migration on Kokanee Creek, tributary to Kootenay Lake, British Columbia. The two stocks of young (above and below waterfall) were reared in a hatchery under identical temperature, light and food conditions. Their directional response to water current was tested in a laboratory migration channel during their first summer and autumn. as well as the following spring. During tests in light, both stocks of young trout showed similar current responses, but in darkness the below falls stock showed much more downstream movement in the autumn than than did the above falls stock. In addition, below falls trout had a higher growth rate. were slightly heavier at the same length and matured earlier than the above falls stock. The adaptive significance of these differences are discussed in relation to maintenance of trout populations above waterfalls and to selective pressures faced by migratory below waterfall populations.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The age, growth and reproduction of the small, introduced fish Gambusia affinis (Baird & Girard, 1853) were studied in the estuary of the Guadalquivir river.
2. The life-span was very short, the stock contained only two age groups: with annulus (1+ group; 10–12 months old) and without annulus (0+ group).
3. In both sexes growth restarted in April when the annulus appeared, but whilst 1+ males stopped growth, 1+ females grew steadily to June. Growth of 0+ spawners was only evident in September, the last month of the reproductive period. A differential growth rate between sexes was also evident.
4. 1+ specimens reproduced during May and June and their offspring from July to September. In both age groups somatic condition progressively declined during the spawning period.
5. The loss of condition and the disappearance of 1 + and the larger 04-specimens after reproduction may indicate the cost of a prolonged high level of reproductive effort.
6. The total fecundity (taken as the number of embryos) of 1 + females was represented by the formula: Fec=5.08 T.L. (mm) -170.07 and that of 0+ specimens by: Fec=2.23 T.L. (mm) -42.92. The maximum average monthly fecundity was reached in June when the length of the mother was at its greatest.
7. Length at first maturity was smaller in 0+ group than in the 1 + group; the difference between the two groups was greater in males (≅5 mm, T.L.) than in females (≅3 mm, T.L.). Also the average total length of 14-spawners was greater than 0+ spawners. There were significant differences in the overall sex ratio of 956 males to 2057 females.
8. The differences found in growth and reproduction between the two age groups suggest that life-history tactics may vary not only between different stocks but also within the same stock among its different components.  相似文献

The biology of a Scottish population of the burrowing goby Lesueurigobius friesii was studied from February 1975 until October 1976. The fish lives at depths of 10–130 m on muddy grounds and attains a length of at least 94 mm and an age of 11 years, females generally living longer than males. Most growth takes place in the first three years of life after which it proceeds very slowly. Marked differences in year-class strength were found. Both sexes mature in their third year and the breeding season lasts from late May until August. Each female can spawn at least twice during this period and the eggs are laid on the roof and sides of the U-shaped burrows which the fish dig in the mud. Fecundity is length dependent and varies between approximately 3–11 000. The fish feeds predominantly on polychaetes, although small Crustacea and molluscs also feature commonly in its diet. No marked diurnal variation in the feeding pattern was noticed, although the amount of food in the stomachs was lowest in the early hours of the morning.  相似文献

We tested the null hypothesis that differences in the seasonal return patterns between stocks of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., are a result of a direct response to the environment, and not under genetic control. Two stocks were used in the experiments, originating from the R. Figga and R. Imsa, respectively. In their native habitat fish from the former are known to return to the home stream as adult salmon early in the summer, while from the latter return during late summer and autumn. By rearing these stocks in the same hatchery and releasing smolts of both stocks together at three sites in southern Norway, it was demonstrated that salmon from the R. Figga stock returned earlier to coastal Norway than salmon from the R. Imsa stock, as maturing adults. Thus, we reject the hypothesis that these stocks are genetically identical in this trait. Within both stocks, multi-sea-winter fish returned earlier than one-sea-winter fish. Within stocks, there was no significant difference in time of return between salmon released as 1- and 2-year-old smolts, or between fish reared from parents ascending the R. From 1968–1984 (period I), a brown trout Salmo trutta , population in a 70-ha oligotrophic lake in central Norway was exploited using larger mesh gill-nets selectively removing the larger fish. From 1985–1994 (period II), intermediate sized fish were removed using smaller-mesh sizes gill-nets. Fishing mortality and CPUE were correlated positively with effort and numbers of fish >3 years old for period II. The gill-net catchability was correlated negatively with spawner biomass and number of trout >3 years old. The significant positive correlation between natural mortality and stock biomass and spawning stock biomass indicated density-dependent mortality. The significant correlation between spawning stock and recruitment described by the Ricker model, indicated density-dependent recruitment of 1-year-old trout. The fishing regimes in the two periods affected the population dynamics and density differently. Selective removal of smaller fish permitted the larger fish to survive, and was beneficial in reducing fish density and maintaining stocks at low levels, consequently, achieving the expected increase in fish growth rates.  相似文献

The unknown status of inland fish stocks hinders their sustainable management. Therefore, increasing stock status information is important for sustainable inland fisheries. Fisheries reference points were estimated for five exploited fish species (11 stocks) in the Lake Edward system, East Africa, which is one of the most productive inland water systems. The aim was to ascertain the status of the fisheries and establish reference points for effective management. The reference points were based on four linked stock assessment approaches for data-limited fisheries. Estimates showed poor stock status with the stocks defined as either collapsed, recruitment impaired or overfished. However, higher catches could be obtained under sustainable management. Estimates of maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and supporting biomass (Bmsy) are provided for 10 of the stocks as targets for rebuilding plans. The immediate target of management should be rebuilding biomass to Bmsy. Applicable measures include shifting length at first capture to the length that maximizes catch without endangering size structure and biomass, and livelihood diversification out of fisheries.  相似文献

Patterns of growth in an exploited reef fish Lethrinus miniatus were examined over 5 years (1995–1999) at two spatial scales: (1) among regions of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) separated by >100 km and (2) among reefs within each of these regions, separated by ≤10 km. Mean annual growth of L. miniatus varied significantly among years, but this variation was consistent among ages and regions, indicating that factors that influence temporal patterns in growth were not age-specific and operated at relatively large spatial scales. Significant variation in growth was also observed among some reefs within regions, although the greatest variation was among regions. The average maximum fork length ( ) and average maximum mass ( M ) varied significantly among regions, suggesting that productivity of L. miniatus is likely to vary among regions of the GBR. There was also significantly greater mass of fish for a given L F in two regions, which magnified the regional differences in M . The observed temporal and spatial variation in growth highlighted the importance of a multi-scale approach to population studies and assessment of fish stocks.  相似文献

Thirty-three collections of Gymnoscopelus nicholsi were made between 1976 and 1981 in the South Atlantic using both krill and bottom trawls. In the Antarctic waters the main part of the stock consisted of adult fish 3–7 years old, characterized by a benthopelagic mode of life. Fish of year-class I were observed only in the vicinity of South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the Scotia Sea; year-class II individuals were absent from Antarctic samples. In the notal zone of the western South Atlantic, fish aged 1–5 years were found. The existence of only one population in the region is a possible explanation of these findings: this population is divided into a pelagic stock of juveniles and sub-adults which occur in the offshore waters of the western South Atlantic and benthopelagic stocks of adults distributed over the slope regions off Argentina, South Georgia and Antarctic archipelagos.
The computed values of K (von Bertalanffy growth) were 0.48, 0.41 and estimated total annual instantaneous mortality rates (Z) were 0.45, 0.67, and 0.70 for South Georgia, South Shetlands and notal zone of western South Atlantic stocks, respectively.  相似文献

The food of five whitefish stocks Coregonus lavaretus planted in Lake Vuokalanjärvi consisted mainly of zooplankton and insects taken from the water surface. The amount of benthic food in the diet of the two sparsely gill-rakered (23 and 28 rakers) stocks increased from the age of 2 years onwards. The growth of whitefish was slow in all stocks. The densely gill-rakered stock (50–51 rakers) originating from the same lake system as Lake Vuokalanjärvi grew faster than the other stocks, and the food consumption of 4- and 5-year-old fish belonging to this stock was nearly double compared with the other stocks. The habitat choice of the whitefish differed between the stocks even in the densely-rakered stocks classified as the same form. A stock with flexible habitat use and feeding habits is most likely to succeed. Introducing whitefish stocks from distant areas is not advisable.  相似文献

The population structure, age, growth, mortality and harvest intensity of the oyster Crassostrea madrasensis were examined in the Moheskhali Channel, Bangladesh between June 2003 and May 2004. The channel is a representative habitat for the area. C. madrasensis monthly length frequency data were analyzed using FiSAT software for estimating population parameters, including asymptotic length ( L ), growth co-efficient ( K ) and recruitment pattern to assess the status of the stock. Asymptotic length ( L∝ ) and growth co-efficient ( K ) were 20.88 cm and 0.35 year−1, respectively. The growth performance index (φ') was calculated with 2.18. The growth pattern showed negative allometric growth ( b  < 3), with an asymptotic weight ( W ) of about 1124.6 g. The oyster attained an average length of 6.17 cm at the end of 1 year. Total mortality ( Z ) by length-converted catch curve was estimated at 1.78 year−1, fishing mortality ( F ) at 0.77 year−1, and natural mortality ( M ) at 1.01 year−1. The exploitation level ( E ) of C. madrasensis was 0.43, while the maximum allowable limit of exploitation ( E max) was 0.45 for the highest yield. The recruitment pattern was continuous, displaying a single major peak event per year. Habitat temperatures were 25.5–31.0°C (mean ± SD, 29 ± 1.62°C); salinity range was from 12.36 to 26.0 ppt (mean ± SD, 19.6 ± 4.7 ppt). The exploitation level (0.43) indicated that the oyster stock was exploited at almost maximum yield in this channel.  相似文献

The population of bream in L. Peipsi was studied with respect to age, growth rate, condition factor (according to Fulton) and length-weight relationship in 1994. That autumn the bream population in L. Peipsi consisted of fishes aged from 0+ to 15+. During the first year bream reached an average body length of 7.9 cm (the commercial legal size (30 cm) was usually attained by the end of the 5th–6th year. The condition of bream in this lake was above the average of Estonian lakes. The relatively good growth rate and condition of bream in the lake indicates that the waterbody is appropriate for this fish.  相似文献

The black bass, Micropterus salmoides, was introduced to Brazil from North America in 1922. Since then the species has been reared in aquaculture facilities intended to stock reservoirs as additions to native stocks available for angling. At present no scientific information on the biology of black bass in Brazilian waters is available. Since black bass dispersion may cause severe impacts on native Brazilian fish fauna, information on the basic biological parameters of this species is necessary. The objective of the present study is to provide information on the growth, age structure, and mortality of the species in a small reservoir in southern Brazil, where the species reproduces regularly. Based on scale readings, the von Bertalanffy growth curve was calculated and compared to the length-frequency distribution of the population. Both methods showed similar results. Maximum length was about 44 cm. The mean length at the end of the first year was 23.1 cm (s.d. = 13.88); at that of the second, 37.3 cm (s.d. = 12.52); and 41.4 cm (s.d. = 9.92) at the third. Oldest fish were three years old. The growth performance index phi' was 3.28 cm year(-1). Mortality increased from 0.16 year(-1) between the first and the second cohort, to 0.8 year(-1) between the second and third. The results show that black bass in Brazil grows faster than in its area of origin, but longevity is shorter and body shape, stouter. The cause of high mortality at a relatively early age may be connected with the loss of genetic diversity due to inbreeding of the Brazilian stocks, which originated from few introduced individuals a long time ago. The fact that black bass reproduces in reservoirs and grows rapidly may be considered a threat to conserving fish diversity in Brazilian ecosystems.  相似文献

Patagonian toothfish, Dissostichus eleginoides, collections (n = 186) from three distinct stocks (two subantarctic stocks and the stock within the Chilean ZEE) were analyzed for Hg concentration by DMA and comparisons were made by gender, total length (TL), wet weight (WW), and population. There was no difference between TL–WW relationships or Hg concentration by gender within any population across the range examined. The Chilean and Prince Edward Island fish had higher TL-adjusted total Hg concentration than those from the South Georgia and may suggest a possible human health risk. Explanation of these population differences in total Hg may be the actual sample areas and associated hydrogeographic and oceanographic conditions. For example, sampling sites for the Chilean fish lie well outside the Antarctic Convergence whereas the Prince Edward sites straddle the Convergence. The samples obtained from South Georgia lie well within the Antarctic convergence, suggesting that the Polar Front may provide some type of hydrographic barrier as has been shown for this species in terms of larval dispersal and feeding.  相似文献

Eutrophication of Dutch lakes has led to massive algal growth, disappearance of most of the macrophytes and disturbance of the food chain. The pike population has fallen sharply and bream developed very strongly, in the absence of this predator. Eutrophication problems are primarily being tackled by reducing nutrient loading. Restoration of water quality, however, seems to be impeded by the present structure of the food chain,i.e. the large bream stock. Biomanipulation, especially fish stock control with the aim of reducing the bream stock and increasing that of predatory fish, can accelerate the process of restoration. For the further development of biomanipulation it is very important that water authorities and managers of fish stocks agree on a common strategy.  相似文献

Twenty broad bean, Vicia faba L., stocks were evaluated under clay field conditions, pH 8.1, located at the Western Experimental Station of the Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza for their relative susceptibility against the stunt nematode, Tylenchorhynchus latus and other tylenchids. Statistical differences (p???0.05 and 0.01) in the studied stocks are found in either final nematode populations or the plant growth and yield components. The potential of each stock to support build-up of the stunt nematode or other tylenchids was estimated in relation to that of L 99 stock or L 348, respectively, which were regarded as check stocks and the host category based on the potential reproduction index of each cultivar was estimated. In this respect, the studied stocks could be categorised for their susceptibility against T. latus as follow: L 241 stock only was rated as resistant to the nematode. L 31 stock was observed to be less susceptible. Twelve stocks of broad bean out of twenty were graded as moderately susceptible. On the other hand, only six broad bean stocks namely L 99, G 429, L 92, L 24, L 13 and L 46 were categorised as highly susceptible (HS). It is worth noticed that reproduction of nematode was favoured on HS and susceptible cultivars but suppressed on resistant one. So, all evaluated stocks showed great variability in their reaction to the nematode infection based on the host type. Also, various plant growth and yield components of broad bean stocks were also discussed. Eventually, the differences among the tested cultivars should serve as a good resource for plant breeders and cropping systems to limit the loss due to the nematode infection.  相似文献

Despite comprising a large portion of riverine fish biomass, very little demographic information is available for redhorse sucker ( Moxostoma spp.) populations in Ontario (Canada). Information is presented on size and age structure, growth, and mortality of black redhorse ( M. duquesnei ), a threatened fish species, and shorthead redhorse ( M. macrolepidotum ) in the Grand River, Ontario. Estimates of body condition, adult mortality, longevity, and maximum attained length were very similar for both species. However, the more abundant shorthead redhorse reached maturity at a smaller size and younger age and grew at a slower rate than the black redhorse. Compared to populations in more southerly parts of its range, Grand River black redhorse grew more slowly, matured later and at a larger size, reached a higher maximum length and age, and was characterized by lower adult mortality rates. Reflective of its central location in the species range, the age and length characteristics of the Grand River population of shorthead redhorse were intermediate of, and overlapped with, other sampled populations.  相似文献

Data suggest that mature egg weight is positively correlated to female parent length in all five species of fork-tailed catfish studied. Embryo weight is positively correlated with the length of the male mouthbrooding parent in the four species where data are available. Non-random mate pairing is probably between fish of equivalent size. Fecundity appears to be linearly related to female fish length in all species. There is no significant correlation between fecundity and female weight, probably because egg size increases with fish size. Low fecundities and breeding behaviour suggest that recruitment is likely to be highly density-dependent and the stocks vulnerable to increased mortality (fishing). Changes in egg size with fish size may account for deviations from a cube relationship between fecundity and fish length in other species. The relevance of this to other fish stock assessments is discussed. Attention is drawn to possible changes in egg size with fish length which could affect recruitment in fished stocks, depending on the specific relationship and the length at which mature fish are caught.  相似文献
