Larvae of the sawfly Athalia rosae ruficornis Jakovlev (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) feed on several glucosinolate-containing plants and have been shown to sequester the main glucosinolates of different hosts, namely sinalbin (p-hydroxybenzylglucosinolate) from Sinapis alba L., sinigrin (allylglucosinolate) from Brassica nigra (L.) Koch, and glucobarbarin ((S)-2-hydroxy-2-phenylethylglucosinolate) from Barbarea stricta Andrz. (Brassicaceae). These plant metabolites are stored in the haemolymph, which is readily released when larvae are attacked by predators. In a dual-choice bioassay the bio-activity of sawfly haemolymph collected from larvae reared on different host plants (S. alba, B. nigra, and B. stricta) was tested against the ant Myrmica rubra L. (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). The haemolymph had a stronger deterrence effect when the corresponding sawfly larvae were reared on S. alba than when reared on B. nigra and B. stricta. Haemolymph of caterpillars of Pieris rapae L. (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) that had fed on S. alba was not deterrent to the ants. No sinalbin could be detected in their haemolymph. The glucosinolates sinalbin and sinigrin, offered in a concentration comparable to that in the sawfly haemolymph, were deterrent to the ants, but not as strongly as the corresponding haemolymph samples. This suggests, that glucosinolates are not the only compounds involved in the chemical defence of A. rosae. However, the presence of sequestered glucosinolates is already a sufficient defence towards predators such as ants, and their effectiveness is modulated by the host plant chemistry.

Using an electronic device and a lignin-specific dye, the feeding behaviour of the green leafhopper,Nephotettix virescens (Distant), (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) was monitored on rice plants kept in an arena permeated with the odour of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) seed oil. The garlicky odour of neem oil disrupted the normal feeding behaviour of the leafhopper. Phloem feeding byN. virescens on rice plants kept in an arena permeated with odour of 6, 12, or 25% neem oil was significantly reduced compared with that on control plants kept in an arena with paraffin oil or 1.66% aqueous Teepol solution. Reduced intake from phloem was associated with a significant increase in the insect's probing frequency and an increase in durations of salivation and xylem ingestion.

The effect of temperature on egg development of the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea Klug was studied under controlled conditions. Based on a linear model describing the relationship between temperature and developmental rates a thermal threshold of 6.9 °C and a thermal constant of 85 day-degrees were established. The experimental results were used to expand and parameterise an existing phenology model to include egg development and hatching of first instar larvae. The model thus became a valuable forecasting tool not only for adult emergence and the optimal monitoring period but also for egg hatch and the best timing of control measures against first instar larvae. The model was validated by comparing predictions with independent observations on egg-laying and subsequent hatching of first instar larvae under semi-field conditions.

The cherry slugworm Caliroa cerasi is a significant destructive pest of sour cherries (Prunus cerasus) in Turkey. The potential of entomopathogenic fungi for controlling C. cerasi was evaluated. The effects of exposure methods and conidial concentrations (1 × 106, 1.5 × 106, 1 × 107 and 1.5 × 107 conidia/ml) on mature larvae of C. cerasi infected by Beauveria bassiana were investigated under laboratory conditions. Larvae sprayed directly with B. bassiana conidial suspensions and larvae exposed to B. bassiana-treated leaves resulted in 100% mortality within 2.90 and 2.77 days, respectively. The median lethal time (LT50) and days to mortality were highest in the 1.0 × 107 concentrations of conidia for both direct spray and leaf exposure. The present study suggests that B. bassiana has good potential for control of the cherry slugworm, C. cerasi.

Toxicity of insecticides to obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana, larvae and adults exposed previously to neem seed oil
Adult and sixth instar obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), exposed previously as fifth instar larvae to sub-lethal concentrations of neem, Azadirachta indica A. Juss., seed oil contained in artificial diet were more susceptible to topically applied pyrethroid, carbamate and organophosphate insecticides than C. rosaceana reared on control diets. Increased susceptibility to insecticides did not result from reduced vigour, as measured by reductions in adult or larval weights, but is instead correlated with previously demonstrated reductions in detoxication enzyme activities. The modest increases in susceptibilities, not exceeding ca. 4.5-fold, for C. rosaceana exposed to neem were achieved with subjects from a susceptible laboratory colony; a larger response could be expected for resistant field populations having elevated detoxication enzyme levels. Neem-based insecticides could be useful tools for the management of orchard pests that have developed resistance to synthetic neurotoxins. These findings also contribute to a better understanding of the numerous physiological changes that occur in larval Lepidoptera following exposure to neem extracts.

Four types of experiments were conducted to assess the pathogenicity of entomogenous nematodes against the apple sawfly,Hoplocampa testudinea Klug (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae). In Petri dish,Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) DD 136 strain,S. carpocapsae All strain,S. feltiae (Filipjev) andHeterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar caused 100% larval mortality 72 h after the treatments. In semi-field conditions under dwarf apple trees, a single
treatment with either 40 or 80S. carpocapsae All strain/cm2 caused significant (>80%) larval mortality. No significant increase in mortality was obtained with a second application.
In 1990, late treatment with 80S. carpocapsae All strain/cm2 caused significant (39.1%) pupal mortality. In 50×50 cm quadrats under dwarf apple trees, treatment with 40 and 80S. carpocapsae All strain/cm2 were done in spring 1989. In spring 1990, respectively 22 and 25 apple sawfly adults emerged from quadrats treated with 40
and 80S. carpocapsae All strain/cm2, whereas 78 adults emerged from untreated quadrats. In a foliar application experiment, a single treatment withS. carpocapsae All strain significantly reduced the percent of fruit showing secondary damage. The possibility of using entomogenous nematodes
as part of an integrated pest management in apple orchards is discussed, with particular reference to the integration of programs
aimed at managing plum curculio,Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) populations.

Neem, Azadirachta indica A. Juss. (Meliaceae), seed oil (NSO) added to meridic diet at concentrations as low as 0.016% reduced pupation and prevented adult eclosion of obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). At a rate of 0.0016%, NSO reduced the fitness of C. rosaceana, resulting in longer developmental times, lower adult eclosion rates, and reduced egg production compared with controls. The neem insecticide Margosan-O
TM
produced comparable results based on concentrations of the most biologically active constituent, azadirachtin. Pupation was completely inhibited at concentrations of 0.25% and 1.0% for larvae exposed at 5th or 6th instar, respectively; rates as low as 0.016% reduced pupal weights and adult eclosion rates. For larvae transferred to treated diet at 5th instar, physical abnormalities in the wings of adults occurred at a rate of 0.004% NSO and increased with increasing treatment rates. NSO at concentrations as high as 2.0% was not antifeedant to neonate larvae, based on 24 and 48 h choice test bioassays, when incorporated into a meridic diet.

The deterrence of azadirachtin, in its pure form and as a constituent of neem seed extract, to fifth instar Spodoptera litura (Fab.) larvae, was measured using cabbage, Brassica oleraceae (L.) var. capitata, leaf disc assays. Paired-choice assays, in which larvae could choose between feeding on a treated (1.3 ng azadirachtin per square cm leaf area) or an untreated leaf disc for 2 h, were conducted at 24 h intervals throughout the fifth instar. In addition, no-choice assays, in which larvae could feed on only one leaf disc (10 ng azadirachtin per square cm leaf area) for 1.5 h, were conducted consecutively over a six hour period at the beginning of the fifth instar. The effects of hunger and habituation on desensitization in our no-choice tests were partitioned. After repeated exposures, larvae became desensitized to pure azadirachtinal in both choice and no-choice tests, but did not desensitize to neem containing the same absolute amount of azadirachtin in choice tests. Hunger was responsible for approximately one third of the desensitization response in the no-choice tests. Sensitivity to azadirachtin was independent of age within the fifth instar.

Maternal care in the red-headed spruce web-spinning sawfly,Cephalcia isshikii (Hymenoptera: Pamphiliidae)
We describe oviposition and maternal behavior in the sawfly Cephalcia isshikiiand examine the adaptive significance of this behavior. Females deposited eggs in a single but loose cluster on needles of terminal twigs of spruces, Piceaspp., and remained with the eggs usually on the underside of the twig facing toward the tip. The female attended her eggs until death without taking food but did not follow the first-instar larvae that moved from natal needles even if she survived until then. When the female was disturbed, she usually moved toward the source and attempted to bite it. Though at much lower frequencies, this aggressive behavior was also observed in gravid females and even in males. Field observations and female removal experiments indicated that the female enhanced the survival of the eggs through the reduction of arthropod prédation.

Hunger affects the feeding and swimming behaviour in fish. After 36 h of food deprivation, the feeding and swimming behaviour of Pseudorasbora parva (Cyprinidae) was studied under different prey densities (0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 of Daphnia pulex per liter). The initial feeding rates showed marked variations in relation to prey availability. Under high prey densities, the initial feeding rate of fish was higher and subsequently decreased faster, when compared to those feeding under low prey densities. At higher prey densities, two factors were involved: that of higher prey encounter rates and also the attainment of food satiation at a faster rate. Across all prey densities, the feeding rates of fish reached a plateau after satiation. The swimming speed of fish was found to be negatively related to the prey density and a significant change in swimming speed was noted as being directly related to the level of satiation. It was found that the increasing satiation level greatly influenced the handling time and reactive volume of predator, which finally caused reduced feeding rates.

The effect of temperature on post-diapause development of the apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea Klug was studied under controlled conditions. Survival was found to decrease at temperatures higher than 15°C, the lethal temperature being close to 25°C. The lower thermal threshold was 4.5°C; the values for males and females did not differ significantly. However, different values were established for unprotected individuals, in vermiculite and in potting compost respectively. Based on the overall mean and variance of the developmental time and the overall thermal threshold a simple soil temperature driven phenology model was constructed using a time- varying distributed delay. The validation with independent field and semi-field data revealed the model to be a reliable tool to predict apple sawfly phenology and hence to determine the optimal time for the installation of white sticky traps or for control measures such as insecticide treatments.

Effect of acetylcholine and anticholinergic drugs on feeding, oviposition, and anesthesia in rotifers was investigated. Neurotransmitter as well as antagonist drugs inhibited feeding in Brachionus calyciflorus in a dose-dependent manner. Most antagonist drugs caused an oscillating tachyphylaxis (drug habituation): the drug effect wore off and returned several times within an hour. Acetylcholine inhibited oviposition in Philodina acuticornis, and this effect was antagonized by all groups of anticholinergic drugs. The strongest antagonism was caused by neuromuscular blockers, and thus the cause of oviposition inhibition may be a cloacal sphincter spasm. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitory insecticides also antagonize the acetylcholine effect. Acetylcholine potentiates the anesthetic activity of ionizing local anesthetics (procaine, lidocaine) as well as that of atropine and the beta-adrenergic blocker propranolol. Muscarinic antagonists (atropine, benactyzine) and propranolol caused foot paralysis in B. calyciflorus, which is also potentiated by acetycholine. Further details of these results are given by Nogrady and Keshmirian (1986a, b).

Sex ratios of the arrhenotokous sawflyDineura virididorsata Retz. (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) are variable among populations in the field, but are biased in favour of females. We
have concluded elsewhere that the sex ratios of this species cannot be satisfactorily explained by any general sex ratio model
that is available. Here we present data on the different behavioural traits that are relevant to interpretation of the evolution
of female-biased sex ratios under local mate competition. We report on oviposition behaviour, mating behaviour and the patterns
of movement of ovipositing virgin and mated females. Our results show that adult emergence is synchronous and females will
mate daily with different males (in the laboratory, at least). This would decrease the relatedness of offspring should it
also take place in the field. In addition, ovipositing females (mated and virgin) leave their site of release in a relatively
short time and deposit few eggs relative to their capabilities, so siblings are unlikely to be clumped. The time that virgins
spend in deposition of an egg is not different from that spent by mated females, so there is no differential ‘investment’
in this regard. These behavioural observations agree with our previous conclusion that the preconditions of current sex ratio
theories are not met byD. virididorsata.

Bioassays against larvae of Aedes aegypti were conducted with neem seed kernel extracts obtained by extraction with water and organic solvents. Permanent exposure of fourth instar larvae to treated water resulted in a conspicuous growth-disrupting effect, mainly during imaginal development. The effectiveness of the extracts increased with decreasing polarity of the solvents used for extraction. Three neem seed kernel extracts caused an extreme prolongation of the larval period when first instar larvae were continuously exposed to treated water until adult emergence. The time necessary for lethal action of neem seed kernel extracts to set in was similar to that reported for some synthetic IGR's.

Summary The foraging behaviour of non-flying nectar feeding mammals has been examined rarely. The exudivorous yellow-bellied glider (Petaurus australis) was observed to feed extensively (70% of the total feeding observation time) on the nectar of all species of Eucalyptus present at a site in southeastern Australia. Gliders harvested nectar, and presumably pollen also, whenever eucalypt flowers were available and selected trees with 2–3 times as many flowers as that on trees randomly selected along a transect. The abundance of flowering trees varied temporally and, at times when few flowering trees were present, gliders chose trees with fewer flowers than at times when flowering trees were abundant. When flowering trees were superabundant or scarce, there was no relationship between the number of flowers in a tree and the duration of visits by gliders. However, at intermediate levels of abundance, the amount of time a glider spent in a tree was related to the number of flowers in a tree. Gliders devoted 90% of the time outside their dens to foraging and the above relationship is suggested to reflect two foraging options which maximize net energy gain for different abundances of flowering trees. Although gliders spent considerable lengths of time in individual trees feeding, initial deposition of cross pollen when gliders first arrive in a tree may be substantial and thus, may provide significant amounts of outcrossing for these eucalypts.

The relationship between the activities of 3 cytosolic enzymes with aflatoxin biosynthesis in Aspergillus parasiticus cultured under different conditions has been investigated in order to find out the role of each enzyme in aflatoxin biosynthesis. Basically the activity of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) was higher in non-toxigenic strains as compared to its counterpart toxigenic fungi (p < 0.05). In contrast, the activities of fatty acid synthase (FAS) as well as glutathione S-transferase (GST) were higher (P < 0.05) in toxigenic strains than that of the non-toxigenic fungi. Aflatoxin production was inhibited in fungi grown in presence of various concentrations of neem leaf extract. Aflatoxin was at its lowest level (>90% inhibition) when the concentration of neem extract was adjusted to 50% (v/v). No significant changes in FAS and IDH activities were observed when aflatoxin synthesis was under restraints by neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract. During a certain period of time of culture growth, when aflatoxin production reached to its maximum level, the activity of FAS was slightly induced in the toxigenic strains fed with a low concentration (1.56% v/v) of the neem leaf extract. At the time (96 h) when aflatoxin concentration reached to its maximum levels, the activity of GST in the toxigenic fungi was significantly higher (i.e., 7–11 folds) than that of non-toxigenic strains. The difference was highest in mycelial samples collected after 120 h. However unlike FAS and IDH, GST was readily inhibited (67%) in mycelia fed with 1.56% v/v of the neem extract. The inhibition reached to maximum of 80% in samples exposed to 6.25–12.5% of the extract. These results further substantiate previous finding that there is a positive correlation between GST activity and aflatoxin production in fungi. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Neem,Azadirachta indica (A. Juss.), seed oil (NSO) applied to leaf discs at a concentration of 1.0% resulted in 94% to 100% mortality of second instar
nymphs of currant-lettuce aphid,Nasonovia ribis-nigri (Mosley), and green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulzer), after nine days. The equivalent amount of pure azadirachtin (AZA) (≈40 ppm), the principle active ingredient of
neem, was as effective as NSO. The survival of adult aphids was unaffected by NSO or AZA, but the survival of offspring from
treated adultM. persicae andN. ribis-nigri was reduced significantly. The lethal concentration of AZA resulting in 50% mortality of second instar nymphs of nine species
of aphids ranged from 2.4 ppm forM. persicae on pepper to 635.0 ppm for the strawberry aphid,Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell), on strawberry. ForM. persicae, the growth regulating effect of AZA was influenced by the host plant and the nymphal instar treated.

Feeding preferences of a group of specialist and generalist chrysomelid beetles were examined using three test methods: whole plants, excised leaves and leaf discs. Method of testing had a very significant effect on relative preferences of the beetles for corn, bean and squash. In some cases the level of statistical significance for a particular preference was affected by test methodology and in other cases the direction of preference was reversed altogether. The feeding preferences of the specialist beetle species were less affected by test method than were the more generalist species. There was also a much greater effect of the difference in test method between the disc test and whole leaf test than between the whole leaf test and whole plant test.Chemical changes in plants induced by damage are probably quite widespread in plants and investigators should take this into account when designing and interpreting tests of insect feeding preference.
