In female rats various parameters and rhythmical structure of forced swimming underwent unsignificant fluctuations during estrus cycle. Ovariectomy changed the swimming time course and increased the rhythmical index of depression without other serious disturbances of the behavioural "despair" test. After chronic estradiol these shifts were partially eliminated. It is suggested that considerable disturbances of gonadal function may be cause of desynchronousness which facilitated the development of depression.  相似文献

We have used molecular dynamics simulation methods to study the structure and fluctuations of "native" apomyoglobin in aqueous solution for a period of greater than 0.5 nanosecond. This work was motivated by the recent attempts of Hughson et al. to characterize the structure and motion of both this molecule and the less compact, acid stabilized I stage, using methods of pulsed H/2H exchange. The study of these systems provides new insights into protein folding intermediates and our simulation has yielded a detailed model for structure and fluctuations in apomyoglobin which complements the experimental studies. We find that local (short-time) fluctuations agree well with fluctuations observed for the holoprotein in aqueous solution, as well as results from the crystallographic B-factors. In addition, the structural features we observe for native apomyoglobin are very similar to the holoprotein, in basic agreement with the findings of Hughson et al. By examining larger-scale motions, developing only over timescales in excess of a 100 picoseconds, we are able to identify conformationally "labile" and "non-labile" regions within native apomyoglobin. These regions correspond extremely well to those identified in the nuclear magnetic resonance experiments as unstable and stable "folding subdomains" in the I state of apomyoglobin. Overall we find that helices A, B, E, G and H show the least amount of motion and helices C, D and F move substantially over the timescales examined. The major motions, and the primary difference between the holo and apo structures as we have observed them, are due to the shifting motion of helices C, D and F into the vacant heme cavity. We also find that motions at the interface of helical segments can be large, with one important exception being the chain segment connecting helices G and H. This segment of chain interacts with the conformationally "non-labile" helix A to form a relatively rigid subdomain composed of helices A, G and H. We believe that these findings provide direct support for the suggestion of Hughson et al. that helices A, G and H constitute a compact subdomain that remains in a native-like conformation as the protein begins to unfold in environments of decreasing pH.  相似文献

At present there is no generally accepted theory of the effect of macroscopic fluctuations. It the article, an attempt is made to relate this effect to some basic properties of quantum systems, in particular, to the formal absence of dynamic chaos in these systems. Based on this approach, it was shown why the level of the effect must be of the same order of magnitude as the level of noise and cannot exceed this level as the number of experiments increases. It was shown qualitatively what is the cause of the similarity of histograms observed in different experiments.  相似文献

The spin label Tempo-maleimide, when "immobilized" in hemoglobin, is shown to exhibit motional fluctuation whose amplitude and/or frequency depend on temperature and solution conditions. These motional fluctuations are observable by several electron spin resonance techniques. For desalted hemoglobin the fluctuations are detectable at approximately -15 degrees C using saturation transfer techniques and at approximately +25 degrees C using line-width measurements of normal absorption spectra. In ammonium sulfate precipitated hemoglobin, however, motional fluctuations are not detectable by either technique up to at least 40 degrees C. The most probable mechanism for spin-label motion appears to be either fluctuations in protein conformation which affect the label binding site or conformational transitions of the nitroxide ring itself. These motional fluctuations are shown to introduce a librational character to the overall label motion during hemoglobin rotational diffusion, with the librational motion significantly affecting the use of spin-label spectral shapes to calculate hemoglobin rotational correlation times.  相似文献

Recently, the "hot hand" phenomenon regained interest due to the availability and accessibility of large scale data sets from the world of sports. In support of common wisdom and in contrast to the original conclusions of the seminal paper about this phenomenon by Gilovich, Vallone and Tversky in 1985, solid evidences were supplied in favor of the existence of this phenomenon in different kinds of data. This came after almost three decades of ongoing debates whether the "hot hand" phenomenon in sport is real or just a mis-perception of human subjects of completely random patterns present in reality. However, although this phenomenon was shown to exist in different sports data including basketball free throws and bowling strike rates, a somehow deeper question remained unanswered: are these non random patterns results of causal, short term, feedback mechanisms or simply time fluctuations of athletes performance. In this paper, we analyze large amounts of data from the Professional Bowling Association(PBA). We studied the results of the top 100 players in terms of the number of available records (summed into more than 450,000 frames). By using permutation approach and dividing the analysis into different aggregation levels we were able to supply evidence for the existence of the "hot hand" phenomenon in the data, in agreement with previous studies. Moreover, by using this approach, we were able to demonstrate that there are, indeed, significant fluctuations from game to game for the same player but there is no clustering of successes (strikes) and failures (non strikes) within each game. Thus we were lead to the conclusion that bowling results show correlation to recent past results but they are not influenced by them in a causal manner.  相似文献

Many predator species feed on prey that fluctuates in abundance from year to year. Birds of prey can face large fluctuations in food abundance i.e. small mammals, especially voles. These annual changes in prey abundance strongly affect the reproductive success and mortality of the individual predators and thus can be expected to influence their population dynamics and persistence. The barn owl, for example, shows large fluctuations in breeding success that correlate with the dynamics in voles, their main prey species. Analysis of the impact of fluctuations in vole abundance (their amplitude, peaks and lows, cycle length and regularity) with a simple predator prey model parameterized with literature data indicates population persistence is especially affected by years with low vole abundance. In these years the population can decline to low owl numbers such that the ensuing peak vole years cannot be exploited. This result is independent of the length and regularity of vole fluctuations. The relevance of this result for conservation of the barn owl and other birds of prey that show a numerical response to fluctuating prey species is discussed.  相似文献

Joyce Marcus has recently proposed a "dynamic model" for the ancient Maya state. In doing so she has emphasized the importance of spatiotemporal fluctuations between centralization and decentralization. Although this idea has obtained wide-ranging support, there has been little consideration of why these oscillations occurred. This article proposes that one of the key factors was the fundamental tension between the institutions of kinship and kingship. Viewed through the lens of Annales, or "French Structural" history, this appears to constitute a classic example of the contradictions between a long-term structure (kinship) and medium-term (longship) cycle. Fluctuations of the surface membrane potential due to adsorbtion and desorbtion of ions when environmental fluctuations generate a fluctuation in the number of adsorbtion sites were investigated. The correlation functions of surface charge density, surface potential and the spectral density of surface potential fluctuations were calculated. The "near-zone effect" one of the main manifestations of the phenomenon of macroscopic fluctuations, was further investigated. It was shown that the statistical significance of the near-zone effect varies with time with a period of about 3.5 days. Daily fluctuations in cerebrospinal fluid cyclic AMP levels were found in neurologically intact rhesus monkeys. When animals were maintained in continuous dim light as opposed to a 12L/12D regimen, the fluctuations in cerebrospinal fluid cyclic AMP levels appeared to be reduced. Knowledge of these daily fluctuations may be helpful for protocols of future experiments concerning measurements of CSF cAMP.  相似文献

A single water molecule (w135), buried within the structure of rat intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP), is investigated by NMR, molecular dynamics simulations, and analysis of known crystal structures. An ordered water molecule was found in structurally analogous position in 24 crystal structures of nine different members of the family of fatty acid binding proteins. There is a remarkable conservation of the local structure near the w135 binding site among different proteins from this family. NMR cross-relaxation measurements imply that w135 is present in the I-FABP:ANS (1-sulfonato-8-(1')anilinonaphthalene) complex in solution with the residence time of >300 ps. Mean-square positional fluctuations of w135 oxygen observed in MD simulations (0.18 and 0.13 A2) are comparable in magnitude to fluctuations exhibited by the backbone atoms and result from highly constrained binding pocket as revealed by Voronoi volumes (averages of 27.0 +/- 1.8 A3 and 24.7 +/- 2.2 A3 for the two simulations). Escape of w135 from its binding pocket was observed only in one MD simulation. The escape process was initiated by interactions with external water molecules and was accompanied by large deformations in beta-strands D and E. Immediately before the release, w135 assumed three distinct states that differ in hydrogen bonding topology and persisted for about 15 ps each. Computer simulations suggest that escape of w135 from the I-FABP matrix is primarily determined by conformational fluctuations of the protein backbone and interactions with external water molecules.  相似文献

It is well known that stems of woody plants shrink and swell diurnally. These fluctuations of stem diameter are induced mainly by the changes of water contents in plants, which are caused by the combination of leaf transpiration and root absorption of water. This implies that dormant-like deciduous broadleaved trees in a leafless state should show no or less changes in stem diameter. However, some physiological activities in woody plants are also known to precede their winter bud opening. Whether and how diameter changes occur in deciduous tree stems during winter was investigated using Zelkova serrata saplings in a leafless state. Measurements of stem diameter changes were done for more than 4 months continuously. The saplings showed distinct diameter changes with periodicities from diurnal to a few weeks, and these changes were initiated 2 months before winter bud opening. These results indicate that some physiological and/or developmental activities occur in the stem of deciduous trees before winter bud opening, and do not correspond to changes in water relations as a result of leaf transpiration. Changes in the ionic permeability of bilayer lipid membranes from dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine at temperatures of phase transition in LiCl (1 M) solution after the addition of polyethyleneglycols of different molecular masses have been studied. The transition of ionic membrane channels from the conducting state to a blocking nonconducting state using polymers makes it possible to calibrate lipid pores. It was shown that low-molecular-weight glycerol, polyethyleneglycols with molecular masses of 300 and 600 decrease the amplitude of fluctuations of the current through the membrane, the decrease being proportional to the size of the polymer molecule being incorporated. The addition of polyethyleneglycols with molecular masses of 1450, 2000, and 3350 decrease the current fluctuations to the basal noise level. This result is considered as a complete blockade of ion channel conductivity. In the presence of rather large polymers, such as polyethyleneglycols with molecular masses of 6000 and 20000, which are practically not incorporated into the pore, single current fluctuations occur again; however, their amplitudes are somewhat smaller than in the absence of polyethyleneglycol. It is assumed that the complete blockade of the conductivity of lipid ionic channels by polyethyleneglycols with molecular masses of 1450, 2000, and 3350 is due to the dehydration of the pore gap and the conversion of the hydrophilic pore to a hydrophobic pore.  相似文献

Certain small networks of spiking interneurons are shown to produce strong fluctuations when modeled with neuromimes. The reasons for these fluctuations are demonstrated and discussed. When one or more of the neuromimes in the circuit were replaced by non-spiking neuromimes, the fluctuations were strongly reduced or disappeared completely. We assume that one of the important functions of nonspiking neurons is to provide precise analog computation while avoiding fluctuation.  相似文献

When studying alcohol dehydrogenase reaction spontaneous oscillations of reaction rate were revealed. The value of these fluctuations essentially exceeded measuring error. The fluctuation amplitude had the maximum value when minimum buffer concentrations were used. Distribution of fluctuations according to their values was polymodal in all experiments. These oscillations seem to be classified as "macroscopic fluctuations" which have been revealed by S. Shnoll & coll [3].  相似文献

The dynamics of the system with a determined chaotic behavior (Lorentz system) was studied by comparing the histograms. It was shown that the dynamics of the system exhibits phenomena similar to those observed in studies of fluctuations in physical systems. In particular, upon comparison of histograms constructed from different time intervals, the "near zone" effect makes itself evident. It was shown that a very slight modulation of only one parameter of the system leads to a change in behavior.  相似文献

Analysis of long time series suggests that environmental fluctuations may be accurately represented by 1/ f   noise (pink noise), where temporal correlation is found at several scales, and the range of fluctuations increases over time. Previous studies on the effects of coloured noise on population dynamics used first or second order autoregressive noise. I examined the importance of coloured noise for extinction risk using true 1/ f   noise. I also considered the problem of estimating extinction risk with a limited sample of environmental variation. Pink noise environments increased extinction risk in random walk models where environmental variation affected the growth rate. However, pink noise environments decreased extinction risk in the Ricker model where environmental variation modified the carrying capacity. Underestimation of environmental variance almost always yielded underestimation of extinction risk. For either population viability analysis or management, we should carefully consider the long-term behaviour of the environment as well as how we include environmental noise in population models.  相似文献

A method of separate monitoring "instant" changes of the VLF, LF and HF power spectral components of heart rate variability, has been developed. The power of the LF and HF spectral components were proved to be continuously changing. The period of these power fluctuations could stay within 15 to 150 sec. Comparison of the heart rate variability spectrum with LF and HF spectral components power fluctuations' spectrums has shown that the frequencies of the LF and HF spectral components power fluctuations stay within the VLF range. The co-operative spectrum form of these fluctuations repeats the form of the VLF peak. In cases when the LF and HF spectral components power fluctuations' periods do not coincide, VLF has two peaks. The frequency of one VLF peak coincides with frequency of the HF power fluctuations, and the frequency of another--with the frequency of LF power fluctuations.  相似文献
