Seven guaianolides from Eupatorium chinense

Two allyl hydroperoxy guaianolide sesquiterpene lactones (peroxyeupahakonin-A and -B) and five new guaianolides (eupahakonin-A and -B, eupahakonenin-A and -B, and eupahakonesin) were isolated from E. chinense and characterized. The allyl hydroperoxy sesquiterpene lactones were characterized by spectral and chemical methods. They were prepared chemically by photosensitized oxygenation of eupahakonin-A.     

Dimeric guaianolides from Artemisia sieversiana

The aerial parts of Artemisia sieversiana afforded in addition to known compounds five new guaianolides and four dimeric guaianolides, three of them closely related to absinthin and one derived from estafiatin as a monomer. The structures were elucidated by extensive NMR studies, which allowed the assignment of the 14 chiral centres. Artemisia frigida afforded several known compounds and one new guaianolide, 8-desoxy-cumambrin B, the most likely precursor of many guaianolides.     

New guaianolides from Pseudostifftia kingii

Pseudostifftia kingii afforded several guaianolides, two of them not isolated before.     

Two guaianolides from calea solidaginea

The isolation and structure elucidation of two new guaianolides, solidaginolides A(1) and B(5), from Calea solidaginea are reported. The structures of the new compounds were established by spectroscopic methods.     

Six guaianolides from Stylotrichium rotundifolium

The investigation of Stylotrichium rotundifolium afforded the epoxide of β-sesquiphellandrene, a new derivative of geranylnerol and six guaianolides not isolated previously. Furthermore, two germacranolides also present in a Lasiolaena species and several known compounds were isolated. The structures were elucidated by detailed ¹H NMR investigations. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.     

Structure of histamine releasing guaianolides from Thapsia species

The structures of six hexaoxygenated guaianolides esterified with four non isomeric carboxylic acids have been established by ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. The acyl residues have been located by chemical ionisation mass spectrometry. Some of the acyl residues are novel for sesquiterpene lactones. The acyl residues in two additional guaianolides esterified with isomeric acids have been located by partial hydrolysis.     

Two guaianolides from cichorium pumilum

The roots of Cichorium pumilum afforded two new guaianolides, 10β-hydroxyguaia-4,13-dien-6,12-olide and the corresponding 11β,13-dihydro derivative which could be separated only after transforming the methylene lactone into the corresponding pyrazoline. The structures were elucidated by 400 MHz ¹H NMR spectroscopy. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.     

Seven guaianolides from the tribe vernonieae

Investigation of six species, all belonging to the Vernonieae, afforded in addition to known compounds seven new guaianolides five of them related to eremanthine, one of the lactones which may be typical of the tribe. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. Chemotaxonomic aspects are discussed briefly.     

Highly oxygenated guaianolides from Bishopanthus soliceps

In addition to known compounds several highly oxygenated guaianolides and eudesmanolides, derived from 1β-hydroxyarbusculin A, were isolated from the aerial parts of Bishopanthus soliceps, a member of a new genus of the tribe Liabeae.     

Plasmids related to RSF1010 from Bordetella bronchiseptica

Six out of 14 Bordetella bronchiseptica isolates from U.K. pigs each contained one plasmid, of 8.7-44 kb. All plasmid-containing isolates were sulfonamide resistant, and this property was shown to be plasmid-encoded. Five of the plasmids were related; two were indistinguishable from the broad-host-range plasmid, RSF1010. The other three, two of which appeared to be identical, were shown to have regions of homology with RSF1010. One of these regions encompassed the sulfonamide resistance determinant while the other contained oriV, which also determines plasmid incompatibility. None of the plasmids could be associated with virulence or phase variation, and it appears likely that they have been acquired in response to antibiotic pressure.     

Further heliangolides and guaianolides from Eupatorium altissimum

The investigation of the aerial parts of Eupatorium altissimum from a collection in West Virginia gave three new guaianolides, six heliangolides and a costunolide all closely related to lactones isolated previously from the tribe Eupatorieae.     

Isodehydrocostus lactone and isozaluzanin C,two guaianolides from Saussurea lappa

Two new guaianolides have been isolated from Saussurea lappa as minor components and have been named isodehydrocostus lactone and isozaluzanin C. A structure has been assigned to isodehydrocostus lactone on the basis of spectral data and correlation with estafiatin. The ¹H NMR data and dehydrogenation studies show that the other highly crystalline guaianolide is isomeric with zaluzanin C. Earlier 3β-H-zaluzanin C has however been reported to occur as a colourless oil.     

Sesquiterpenes,guaianolides and diterpenes from Stevia myriadenia

The investigation of Stevia myriadenia afforded in addition to known compounds a new clerodane and a labdane derivative, two guaianolides, a bisabolene and a germacrene derivative. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.     

Hydroxylated jasmonic acid and related compounds from Botryodiplodia theobromae

From the culture filtrate of the fungus Botryodiplodia theobromae five hydroxylated cyclopentane fatty acids of the jasmonic acid type were isolated and identified as (11 S -(-)-hydroxyjasmonic acid; (11R)-(-)-hydroxyjasmonic acid; (-)-12-hydroxyjasmonic acid; (-)-8ξ-hydroxyjasmonic acid; (-)-3-oxo-2-(1ξ-hydroxy-2Z-pentenyl)cyclopent-1-yl-butyric acid; (-)-3-oxo-2(4ξ-hydroxy-2Z-pentenyl)cyclopent-1-yl-butyric acid. In addition, the corresponding hydroxylated iso-jasmonic acid analogues were found as minor constituents. During silica gel chromatography 11,12-didehydrojasmonic acid, 11ξ-acetoxyjasmonic acid, 3-oxo-2-(4ξ-acetoxy-2Z-pentenyl)cyclopent-1-yl-butyric acid 3-oxo-2-(2Z,4-pentadienyl)cyclopent-1-yl-butyric acid were formed as artefacts.
