Plant oils (cottonseed, soybean, corn, groundnut and palm) at different dosages were evaluated in the laboratory for their ability to suppress the populations ofCryptolestes pusillus andRhyzopertha dominica in maize and sorghum. Exposure of adults of both beetle species to grains treated with 10 ml/kg of the different oils induced 100% mortality within 24 h. A dose of 5 ml/kg of each oil significantly decreased the progeny produced byR. dominica. Complete protection was achieved on grains treated with 10 ml/kg. These oils also repelled the adults of both species. Percentage weight loss caused byR. dominica in grains treated with 5 ml/kg and 10 ml/kg levels were significantly lower than in untreated grains. Oil treatment did not affect the germination of, or water absorption by, maize and sorghum grains compared with untreated grains. The potential use of plant oils in the management of insect pests in traditional grain storage is discussed.  相似文献

Female-biased sex ratio is an interesting phenomenon observed in Rumex acetosa, a dioecious plant with an XX/XY1Y2 sex chromosome system. Previous authors have suggested that the biased sex ratio in this species is conditioned not only postzygotically (sex-differential sporophytic mortality) but also prezygotically, because the sex ratio of seeds is also female-biased, although to a lesser extent than the sex ratio of flowering plants. The mechanisms underlying female bias in Rumex seeds are only poorly understood. To gain more knowledge of them, we analysed male gametophyte development and used flow cytometry to determine the frequency of female-determining (n = 7, A + X) and male-determining (n = 8, A + Y1Y2) pollen grains in anthers. Embryological studies showed a regular course of male gametophyte development in R. acetosa. There were no signs of degeneration of microspores or disturbances in pollen divisions (irregular nuclei, micronuclei, delayed chromosomes and anaphase bridges). The Alexander test revealed only 1.6% nonviable pollen grains within anthers. All mature pollen grains were uniformly equipped with starch granules. The two sexes were shown to substantially differ in nuclear 2C DNA amount in somatic tissues (7.00 pg in 2A + XX females and 7.50 pg in 2A + XY1Y2 males), and two clearly different DNA classes of mature pollen grains, with lower and with higher DNA amounts (16.8% difference) were found. Most probably the grains with the lower DNA amount possess seven chromosomes, and grains with the higher DNA amount eight of them. The quantitative ratio of these grains in anthers at anthesis was 1:1.2, very close to the sex ratio of seeds observed by the majority of previous authors. All these observations support the opinion that the sex-ratio bias in Rumex is determined prezygotically to some extent.  相似文献

In both Oenothera villaricae Dietrich and O. picensis ssp. picensis, chromosomes are transmitted as two Renner complexes. Reciprocal combinations of the Renner complexes produce eight different F1 hybrids, but only seven are viable. Each species, and each F1 hybrid, produces three sizes of pollen, approximately 50% small sterile grains, 15% medium-sized viable grains and 35% large viable grains. Medium- and large-sized grains were separated manually and subjected to random amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) analysis. A pattern of RAPD amplifications was obtained which indicates that, for each species and F1 hybrid, one specific Renner complex characterizes the medium- and another the large-sized viable pollen. The results indicate that pollen size is determined in part by the pollen genotype and in part by the genotype of the other pollen grains developing within the same anther.  相似文献

Studies on protoplasts isolation were carried out with mature pollen grains of 29 samples of species of Allium aflatunense, A. cepa, A. fistulosum, A. karataviense, A. longicuspis, A. nutans, A. odorum, A. sativum and A. schoenoprasum. Surface sterilized pollen grains drifted from crushed anthers were incubated in an enzyme solution containing 1% (w/v) cellulase Onozuka R-10, 1% (w/v) Macerozyme R-10, 0,5 mol l-1 sucrose and the basal salts of Nitsch medium. Protoplasts were released within 3 to 120 min, either from the pollen grain, through a slightly disturbed germination pore (narrow aperture), or through a wider aperture, when the exine surrounding the germination pore was disturbed. For the first time, protoplasts were obtained from 13 genotypes of 6 Allium species, at a rate of 1 to 30% of the digested intact pollen grains, depending on the genotype.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect on infection of wheat spikes by toxigenic fungi (Aspergillus parasiticus NRRL 2999, Fusarium tricinctum NRRL 3299, Fusarium graminearum CEREMIC 136/92) and a strain of Streptomyces sp. that is antagonistic to the above-mentioned fungi. Wheat grains (variety GRANERO INTA) were sown in 8 pots containing natural soil and kept in a greenhouse chamber. In the period of the early anthesis the wheat spikes were inoculated with conidial suspensions of each of the fungi in the presence or absence of Streptomyces. Each pot was assigned a different treatment. After an incubation of 100 days and when the wheat plants had attained maturity, the spikes were separated and the following items were determined: (a) number of grains obtained with each treatment, (b) weight of the grains, (c) average weight of the grains/treatment, (d) average number and weight of the grains/spike, and (e) invasion of the caryopses by the microorganisms determined by the analysis of the caryopses in seriate histological sections.There was a significant decrease (p<0.01) in the average weight of the caryopses and in the weight and number of grains/spike in the presence F. graminearum. The wheat grains were invaded by of F. graminearum and A. parasiticus, an effect which was partially attenuated by the presence of antagonist Streptomyces sp. Nevertheless, the effect was not strong enough to prevent the degenerative consequences on the size and weight of the grains produced by F. graminearum.  相似文献

Actinomycetomas represent 97.8% of mycetomas in Mexico, where 86.6% are produced by Nocardia brasiliensis. We report a case of actinomycetoma in the arm by Nocardia brasiliensis disseminated to lung. Uncommon grains were observed which present outside peripheral filaments and also numerous filaments loosing the grains. These characteristics of the grains are due probably because for the long treatment with antibiotics of the patient. In situ antibiotic action against the microcolonies is discussed.  相似文献

Studies on Ambrosia pollen concentrations were carried out in Lublin in the period 1995–2004. The effects of a number of meteorological factors were analysed. In the first period of the study, the gravimetric method was used (1995–1999), while in the second period, the volumetric method was applied. The results show an increasing trend in the amount of airborne pollen. The Ambrosia pollen season in Lublin lasts from August to October. Over a period of 5 years, the highest number of pollen grains was recorded in September (53%), followed by August (44%) and October (3%). There were wide variations in annual totals. The annual total pollen counts was 167–1180 grains, with the peak value in 2002. Maximum daily pollen concentrations (56–312 pollen grains m−3) were recorded in the first half of August and in the first half of September. On the days when high Ambrosia pollen concentrations occurred, the temperature was above 21°C and the winds were mainly from the southeast, south and east. Maximum intradiurnal concentrations of pollen grains occurred in the afternoon hours. These results indicate, to some degree, that Ambrosia pollen is transported for long distances before descent.  相似文献

The New Zealand red admiral butterfly, Bassaris gonerilla (F.) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), has been known as a non-target host for the introduced biological control agent Pteromalus puparum (L.) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) for at least 35 years, but the level of parasitism has never been quantified. Pre-imaginal mortality in B. gonerilla was assessed over the southern summer of 2000/01 at six field sites in the Christchurch area of the South Island, New Zealand. Individual eggs and larvae were identified by tagging the stem of the Urtica ferox Forst.f. plant on which they were found and the fate of these individuals was checked weekly. These data were used to construct a partial life table for B. gonerilla. Egg mortality was very high (95%), with parasitism by an unidentified Telenomus sp. Haliday (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) causing 57% mortality. Mortality in the larval and pupal stages increased at a constant rate with age and the major mortality factor was disappearance, which was assumed to be a result of predation and dispersal of larvae. The introduced biological control agent P. puparum parasitized 14% of B. gonerilla pupae sampled. However, parasitism by another exotic parasitoid, the self-introduced Echthromorpha intricatoria (F.) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), was even higher at 26%. A survey of pupal parasitism in three regions of New Zealand (Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin) revealed overall parasitism levels of 67% by E. intricatoria and 8% by P. puparum, but due to the difference in emergence times of B. gonerilla and its parasitoids, these are likely to be overestimates of percent parasitism. It is concluded that P. puparum has permanently enhanced mortality in B. gonerilla, but the level of mortality is low relative to egg parasitism by Telenomus sp., larval disappearance mortality, and pupal mortality due to E. intricatoria parasitism. To determine if this level of pupal parasitism has had population effects will require more data and the development of a population model for B. gonerilla.  相似文献

Preliminary screening assays were carried out on 17 isolates from five fungal species Beauveria bassiana, Lecanicillium muscarium, Metarhizium anisopliae, Isaria farinosa, and I. fumosorosea. The three most effective isolates against Peregrinus maidis (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) were B. bassiana CEP 147, CEP 150, and CEP 189. There were no consistent differences found in males and females regarding fungal susceptibility. However, more females than males were proportionally infected. There was not a correlation between the percentage of conidial germination and the percentage of mortality caused by fungal infection in any of the treatments. Only B. bassiana CEP 147, which caused a cumulative mortality of 69.8 ± 6.4% after 7 days post-inoculation, was selected to be assayed against adults of P. maidis, Delphacodes kuscheli (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), and Dalbulus maidis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). In pathogenicity tests significant differences were observed among treatments. After 2 weeks post-inoculation, both D. kuscheli (cumulative mortality of 73.3 ± 9.0%) and P. maidis (cumulative mortality of 68.6 ± 6.7%) were significantly more susceptible than D. maidis (cumulative mortality of 49.9 ± 9.7%) to the selected isolate.  相似文献

Chinese narcissus (Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis Roem) blooms but has no seeds. Embryological studies on the species were conducted to discover the causes of its sterility. Its anther wall is composed of four layers of cells, and its tapetum is of the secretory type. The cytokinesis of microspore mother cells is of the successive type, and the tetrad is tetrahedral. During meiosis of microspore mother cells, some chromosomes lagged, and several micronuclei were found in tetrads. Only 27.7% of the pollen grains contained full cytoplasm, and 1.3% of them germinated in culture medium. No pollen grain, however, could germinate on the stigma. The ovary is trilocular with axile placenta, and the ovules are bitegmic, tenuinucellate, and anatropous. Its embryo sac is of the polygonum type. Most embryo sacs degenerated, and only about 4.5% of the ovules contained a normal embryo sac with an egg cell, two synergids, three antipodal, and a central cell containing two polar nuclei. One reason for the sterility of Chinese narcissus is the abnormality of microsporogenesis and megasporogenesis, in which only a few functional pollen grains and embryo sacs are produced. The importance of the transport of pollen by air movement into houses was evaluated using six to eight simultaneously collecting rotorod-type samplers, creating either a sampler line from outdoors to inside the room, or a sampler grid inside a room. The number of incoming pollen grains was highly dependent on the outdoor concentration. The highest concentrations inside (1–2 m distance) and outside (1 m) the room were 600 and 3,250 grains/m3, respectively, in the Betula pollen season and 1,980 and 5,080 grains/m3 in the Pinus season. The pollen concentration and the indoor/outdoor (I/O) ratio decreased as the distance from the ventilation opening increased. Inside the room at a distance of 1–2 m 28%, and at a distance of 3–5 m 12%, of the outside concentration was recorded. In the lower part of the opening the mean proportion was 63% and in the upper part of the opening it was 40%. Efficient ventilation with two open windows increased the I/O ratio and enabled the pollen to spread throughout the room. During the Pinus pollen season 3–35% of the outdoor concentration was simultaneously recorded at six locations inside the room with two open windows and only 0.1–3.6% with one open window. At the same point in the room the I/O ratio varied from <1 to 35%, depending on the sampling conditions. Only a minor effect on the I/O ratio was found between small and large ventilation windows and the door, although it was expected that more air and pollen grains would come indoors through a larger opening.  相似文献

The parasitic wasp Cephalonomia tarsalis parasitizes larvae of the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis, which feed on wheat grains. In contrast to most other host–parasitoid systems studied so far, the grain beetles are highly mobile within their habitat, bulk of grains in grain stores. This should increase the wasps’ problem to locate the hosts. To study the host-finding strategy of C. tarsalis females, the reaction of wasps to different grain and host-derived odour sources was tested in a four-chamber-olfactometer. These experiments revealed that wasps were attracted by healthy grains and mechanically damaged grains. In direct comparison, healthy and mechanically damaged grains are equally attractive. Both potential sources of host-derived odours, host faeces and trail-traces of larvae on filter paper were attractive to the wasps. The response to trail-traces vanished 30 min after larvae had been removed from the filter paper. With respect to the specificity of the odours, it turned out that wasps were attracted to odours from the seed–host complexes from O. surinamensis and Oryzaephilus mercator and the non-host complex of larvae of the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius in wheat grains. Odours from the seed–host complex were preferred. From these results, we hypothesize that host habitat location in C. tarsalis is achieved by using grain-derived odours. Within the habitat, wasps search for kairomones from host faeces and host trails. Following these larval trails finally leads wasps to their hosts.  相似文献

Fumigation with methyl bromide (MeBr) at a concentration of 120 mg/1 maintained for 4 h at 25°C caused 100% mortality of spores of Aspergillus ochraceus, A. flavus, Penicillium citrinum, P. chrysogenum and P. cyclopium. However, 40% of an A. niger spore population retained its viability after this treatment. Increasing the duration of fumigation to 24 h at a concentration of 40 mg/1 MeBr caused 100% spore mortality of all fungi tested. Total growth inhibition of 24 h-old mycelia was achieved with 40 mg/1 for 24 h or 120 mg/1 for 4 h. These concentrations for the same period of exposure were not inhibitory for 7-day-old mycelia of any of the fungi tested. In A. niger-inoculated wheat grains fumigated with 100 mg/1 MeBr for 24 h, 20% yielded fungal contaminants after 16 days of storage and 100% after 29 days. There was a marked drop in the percent germination of the grains after fumigation, whereas the free fatty acids level was higher than in unfumigated grain. The results of the in vivo study suggest that MeBr given at a commercial dosage for 24 h is not only ineffective in destroying the internal inocula of wheat grains but also enables their subsequent development by weakening the resistance of grains to fungal attack.  相似文献

Larval mortality ofNeodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy),Diprion pini (L.) andGilpinia pallida (Klug) were studied in field experiments around a factory complex in southwestern Finland. Larval colonies were transferred on the shoots of Scots pines growing at different distances from the emission source. Larval mortality was highest near the factories. InN. sertifer, larval mortality caused by the nuclear polyhedrosis virus was higher and cocoon mortality caused by parasitoids was lower near the pollutant source. The most abundant parasitoid species wereSynomelix scutulata (Hartig) andLamachus eques (Hartig). 16–67% of theN. sertifer, 0–5% of theD. pini and the 73–100% ofG. pallida cocoons contained parasitoids oviposited during the larval period of the sawflies.   相似文献

Cases containing pupae of Hydropsychidae (Trichoptera) were collected from sampling-stations along the length of the Credit and Humber Rivers, Ont., and reared at 18°C. Mortality was high; about 33% of the cases produced adults. Up to 24% of collected cases had been infested with chironomid larvae. Within a station, emergence success and mortality due to chironomid infestation were about the same for the species of Hydropsyche Pictet present; Cheumatopsyche Wallengren suffered less chironomid-related mortality than Hydropsyche. There were significant between-station differences in chironomid-related mortality for H. sparna Ross, H. bronta Ross, H. morosa Hagen, and H. slossonae Banks. Chironomid-related mortality was lowest for pupae from upper Credit R. stations, highest for pupae collected from a lower Credit R. station. Pupae from all Humber R. stations suffered about the same amount of chironomid-related mortality. Chironomid infestation was significantly higher for prepupae than for pupae.  相似文献

Summary Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum var. Arkas) was associated withAzospirillum lipoferum under greenhouse and field conditions of a temperate region. Controls were treated with autoclaved bacteria. The soils used were: sand, sandy loam, and a peat-clay mixture. In experiments run over a period of three years, there were increases in grain yield, N-yield of the grains, and 1000 grain weight.Depending from environmental conditions, increase changed from year to year, and within one given year. There was, however, no experiment without positive response to the inoculation. Highest grain yield increase (70%) was found on sand supplemented with P and K only, but up to 32% were also obtained on peat-clay soil containing 0.28% total N. Under greenhouse conditions, one third of technical N-fertilizer could be saved by bacterial activities. With high probability the effects observed have been at least partly due to bacterial N2-fixation, because the N-yield of the grains was increased (up to 33%), and the most pronounced response was found on sand without any N-fertilizer added.  相似文献

利用常规石蜡切片法和细胞学压片法,对异型花柱植物滇丁香的长花柱型植株的小孢子发生、雄配子体发育及花粉萌发进行观察。结果表明:(1)长花柱型滇丁香具5枚花药,花药4室。(2)花药壁由1层表皮、1层花药内壁、2层中层和1~3层绒毡层组成;花药壁发育方式为基本型,绒毡层类型为腺质绒毡层。(3)小孢子母细胞减数分裂的胞质分裂为同时型,四分体排列方式为四面体型,偶有左右对称型;不同药室间小孢子母细胞减数分裂不同步。(4)成熟花粉粒为二细胞型。(5)小孢子发生和雄配子体发育过程正常,表明长花柱型滇丁香属于发育正常的两性花。(6)授粉4h后,长花柱型滇丁香的花粉在长、短两种花柱柱头上的萌发率分别达(91.8±1.6)%和(93.2±1.1)%,且两者间无显著性差异(t=1.585,df=8,p=0.152),表明长花柱型滇丁香的成熟花粉粒在长、短两种花柱柱头上的萌发均正常。  相似文献

In the Baltic Sea, herring (Clupea harengus membras) spawns in the littoral zone, where its eggs are attached to algae or vascular plants. Field studies indicate that egg mortality can be very high (up to 100%) in eggs that are attached to red algae (Rajasilta et al., 1989, 1993). Because high mortality can be due to allelochemical effects of the algae, we studied the mortality of herring eggs on different algal substrates experimentally. Four types of substrates were tested: fresh Cladophora and Furcellaria, and Furcellaria that had decomposed six days or 23 days. The incubation time in the experiments was 3 days and incubation temperature 12–13 oC (ca. 700–800 h-degrees). The results were in accordance with observations made in field studies and indicated significant differences among the substrate types. In eggs attached to fresh Cladophora, mortality was significantly lower (mean=2.8%; n=20) than in those attached to Furcellaria, independently of the treatment of the algae. The highest values of mortality (mean=14.4%; n=20) were found in eggs attached to Furcellaria that had decomposed over a six days’ period. This suggested that Furcellaria contain some chemical substances, which can cause mortality in herring embryos and the effect seems to be dependent on the state of decomposition of the algae.  相似文献

The potential for classical biological control to cause unintended harm to native species was evaluated in the case of the endemic Hawaiian koa bug, Coleotichus blackburniae White (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae), and parasitoids introduced to Hawaii for control of an agricultural pest, the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Parasitism of C. blackburniae eggs, nymphs and adults by biocontrol agents was quantified across a wide range of habitats and compared to other sources of mortality. Egg mortality due to the biocontrol agent Trissolcus basalis Wollaston (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) was low (maximum 26%) and confined to elevations below 500 m on a single host plant. Predation, mainly by alien spiders and ants, was the greatest source of egg mortality (maximum 87%). Parasitism of adult C. blackburniae by the biocontrol agent Trichopoda pilipes (F.) (Diptera: Tachinidae) was near zero at 21 of 24 sites surveyed. Three sites with high bug density had higher levels of T. pilipes parasitism, reaching maxima of 70% among adult female bugs, 100% among males and 50% among fifth instars. Male-biased parasitism indicated that T. pilipes is adapted to using male aggregation pheromone for finding C. blackburniae hosts. The relative impacts of biocontrol agents and other sources of mortality were compared using life tables. Invasive species, particularly generalist egg predators, had the greatest impacts on C. blackburniae populations. Effects of intentionally introduced parasitoids were relatively minor, although the tachinid T. pilipes showed potential for large impacts at individual sites. In retrospect, non-target attacks by biological control agents on C. blackburniae were predictable, but the environmental range and magnitude of impacts would have been difficult to foresee.  相似文献

Aerobiological study of Fagaceae pollen in the middle-west of Spain   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The concentration of airborne Fagaceae pollen in Salamanca and the correlations with some meteorological parameters have been examined. Castanea and Quercus pollen grains were collected from 1998 to 2004 using a Burkard spore trap. No pollen grains of Fagus were found. The main pollen season took place in April and May for Quercus and in June and July for Castanea. Yearly variations on these dates could be related to the influence of meteorological factors such as rainfall, temperature, or dominant winds. The highest values appeared in the year 2004 for both taxa. The Fagaceae airborne content was mainly due to Quercus pollen, Castanea having a scarce pollen content in the city of Salamanca. The highest counts of Fagaceae pollen grains were found from mid May to early June due to the pollen behavior of oaks. The cumulative counts varied over the years, with a mean value of 2,384 pollen grains, a highest total of 6,036 in 2004 and a lowest total of 954 in 2001. No cyclic variations were observed. Daily pollen concentrations presented positive correlation with temperature, negative with relative humidity and slightly negative with rainfall using Spearman's correlation coefficients, only in the case of Castanea, because the particular hourly distribution of rainfall during the spring might affect Quercus airborne pollen.  相似文献
