We report an experiment designed to test for overpopulation in an Iceland scallop, Chlamys islandica (O.F. Müller), slow-growing bed. Scallops were installed in pearl nets at the site of the scallop bed and in a nearby unpopulated site, near the bottom and far from the bottom. With this set-up, all groups, except that one near the bottom inside the bed, were free from potential overpopulation effects. In addition, there were two stocking densities to test for containment effects.Shell growth was higher at 2.0 m above the bottom, outside the scallop bed, than at the three other site and height combinations, which were not significantly different from each other. There was a borderline effect of site on soft tissue growth, which was probably slower at the donor site. We conclude that there was no evidence of overpopulation in the scallop bed. On both sites, soft tissue growth was slowest near the bottom, irrespective of group size, intermediate at 2.0 m height, high population density, and fastest at 2.0 m height, low population density. Survivorship was lower near the bottom, but was independent of site and of group size. Available data showed no sustained vertical patterns in phytoplankton concentration in the water column. These results suggest that food depletion occurred in the pearl nets, but that density-independent factors dominated density-dependent factors in the pearl nets near the bottom. Likely explanations involve the interaction between containment effects and current speed variations in the benthic boundary layer. Survivorship decreased with fluctuating asymmetry of the ears of the shells. Fluctuating asymmetry, therefore, may provide a means of including individual effects in growth experiments and forecasting the ability of spat to resist density-independent mortality agents.  相似文献

The antagonistic fungus Trichoderma harzianum is widely recognized as a potential biocontrol agent against several soil-borne plant pathogens. T. harzinum is rich source of chitinoltic enzymes. In vitro screening of 5 isolates of T. harzinum, one isolate of Chaetomium globosum and one isolate of Conetherium mentance, revealed that all of them had reduced growth area of Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium solaniand Rhizoctonia solani on PDA medium, significantly. The inhibition percentage ranged from 77.9 % to 55.9% for M. phaseolina and 59.2% to 40.4% for R. solani by T. harzinum and C. mentance, respectively. Inhibition for F. solani ranged from 76.5% to 55.7% by T. harzinum and C. globosum, respectively. Isozyme gel electrophoresis was used to assess chitinase activity secreted by selected isolates of T. harzinum under different pH degrees and temperatures. Obtained results indicated that activity of chitinase isozyme produced at 30 °C was higher than 15–20 °C for all tested isolates and activity of chitinase produced by isolates No. 4 and 5 of T. harzinum at pH (7–7.5) was higher than at pH 6, respectively.  相似文献

Spatial patterns of site occupancy are commonly driven by habitat heterogeneity and are thought to shape population dynamics through a site-dependent regulatory mechanism. When examining this, however, most studies have only focused on a single vital rate (reproduction), and little is known about how space effectively contributes to the regulation of population dynamics. We investigated the underlying mechanisms driving density-dependent processes in vital rates in a Mauritius kestrel population where almost every individual was monitored. Different mechanisms acted on different vital rates, with breeding success regulated by site dependence (differential use of space) and juvenile survival by interference (density-dependent competition for resources). Although territorial species are frequently assumed to be regulated through site dependence, we show that interference was the key regulatory mechanism in this population. Our integrated approach demonstrates that the presence of spatial processes regarding one trait does not mean that they necessarily play an important role in regulating population growth, and demonstrates the complexity of the regulatory process.  相似文献

We investigate the relationship between the microfilarial density in the skin and the burden of adult female Onchocerca volvulus by analysing pre-control nodulectomy data which allow for a direct approach, independent of exposure. The data of 169 patients in Burkina Faso and 182 patients in Liberia represent savannah and forest onchocerciasis in West Africa, respectively. Whereas in Burkina Faso, a saturating relationship between microfilarial density and worm burden suggests the operation of density-dependent processes within human hosts, the Liberian data show a linear relationship implying no density dependence. The differences may derive from differences between both parasite strains, i.e. the savannah or the forest strain of O. volvulus. Consistently for both parasite strains and independent of the worm burden, the microfilarial density increases with host age emphasising the concept of the acquisition of immunological tolerance. In male hosts in Liberia, the microfilarial density increases stronger with the worm burden than in female hosts, whereas such sex-specific differences cannot be found in Burkina Faso. In the methodological part of this investigation, we suggest the beta-distribution to be most appropriate for describing variability in microfilarial densities and we present an approach to consider the uncertainty in the adult parasite burden which cannot be determined precisely in helminth infections. Implications of density dependence are discussed with respect to immunological processes in the human host and with respect to the success of control programs. The relationships described show that regulatory processes between the parasite and the human host are multi-dimensional, operating within a high degree of biological variability.  相似文献

Recovering populations may experience positive density-dependent feedbacks that contribute to population increases. Diadema antillarum, a keystone herbivore on Caribbean coral reefs, suffered a well-documented mass mortality in 1983-84. High densities of adults of this long-spined urchin could provide effective refuge from predation for juveniles under a spine canopy, as has been suggested for other urchin species. We evaluated the effect of adult density on juvenile persistence of D. antillarum experimentally, and examined size-frequency distributions of recovering local populations for evidence of positively density-dependent juvenile persistence at St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Juvenile persistence was significantly higher in high adult density treatments, and bimodal population size distributions also suggest potential positive effects of adult density on juveniles. This positive feedback could accelerate the recovery of this important coral reef grazer.  相似文献

Endoplasmic streaming of characean cells of Nitella or Chara is known to be in the range 30-100 microm/second. The Chara myosin extracted from the cells and fixed onto a glass surface was found to move muscle actin filaments at a velocity of 60 microm/second. This is ten times faster than that of skeletal muscle myosin (myosin II). In this study, the displacement caused by single Chara myosin molecules was measured using optical trapping nanometry. The step size of Chara myosin was approximately 19nm. This step size is longer than that of skeletal muscle myosin but shorter than that of myosin V. The dwell time of the steps was relatively long, and this most likely resulted from two rate-limiting steps, the dissociation of ADP and the binding of ATP. The rate of ADP release from Chara myosin after the completion of the force-generation step was similar to that of myosin V, but was considerably slower than that of skeletal muscle myosin. The 19nm step size and the dwell time obtained could not explain the fast movement. The fast movement could be explained by the load-dependent release of ADP. As the load imposed on the myosin decreased, the rate of ADP release increased. We propose that the interaction of Chara myosin with an actin filament resulted in a negative load being imposed on other myosin molecules interacting with the same actin filament. This resulted in an accelerated release of ADP and the fast sliding movement.  相似文献

The vast majority of parasites exhibit an aggregated frequency distribution within their host population, such that most hosts have few or no parasites while only a minority of hosts are heavily infected. One exception to this rule is the trophically transmitted parasite Pterygodermatites peromysci of the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), which is randomly distributed within its host population. Here, we ask: what are the factors generating the random distribution of parasites in this system when the majority of macroparasites exhibit non-random patterns? We hypothesise that tight density-dependent processes constrain parasite establishment and survival, preventing the build-up of parasites within individual hosts, and preclude aggregation within the host population. We first conducted primary infections in a laboratory experiment using white-footed mice to test for density-dependent parasite establishment and survival of adult worms. Secondary or challenge infection experiments were then conducted to investigate underlying mechanisms, including intra-specific competition and host-mediated restrictions (i.e. acquired immunity). The results of our experimental infections show a dose-dependent constraint on within-host-parasite establishment, such that the proportion of mice infected rose initially with exposure, and then dropped off at the highest dose. Additional evidence of density-dependent competition comes from the decrease in worm length with increasing levels of exposure. In the challenge infection experiment, previous exposure to parasites resulted in a lower prevalence and intensity of infection compared with primary infection of naïve mice; the magnitude of this effect was also density-dependent. Host immune response (IgG levels) increased with the level of exposure, but decreased with the number of worms established. Our results suggest that strong intra-specific competition and acquired host immunity operate in a density-dependent manner to constrain parasite establishment, driving down aggregation and ultimately accounting for the observed random distribution of parasites.  相似文献

Understanding the endogenous factors that drive the population dynamics of malaria mosquitoes will facilitate more accurate predictions about vector control effectiveness and our ability to destabilize the growth of either low- or high-density insect populations. We assessed whether variation in phenotypic traits predict the dynamics of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes, the most important vectors of human malaria. Anopheles gambiae dynamics were monitored over a six-month period of seasonal growth and decline. The population exhibited density-dependent feedback, with the carrying capacity being modified by rainfall (97% wAIC(c) support). The individual phenotypic expression of the maternal (p = 0.0001) and current (p = 0.040) body size positively influenced population growth. Our field-based evidence uniquely demonstrates that individual fitness can have population-level impacts and, furthermore, can mitigate the impact of exogenous drivers (e.g. rainfall) in species whose reproduction depends upon it. Once frontline interventions have suppressed mosquito densities, attempts to eliminate malaria with supplementary vector control tools may be attenuated by increased population growth and individual fitness.  相似文献

The rates of reproduction and multiplication of Meloidogyne hapla decreased as a result of self-regulatory, density-dependent processes with time and nematode population increase in the soil and roots of Medicago sativa cv. Cuf 101. Juvenile, egg, and mature female population densities increased at a maximum rate until damage to the host resulted in alfalfa yield reductions. Temporal differences in multiplication and reproduction rates of M. hapla were observed to be a function of initial population density (Pi), host damage, and root biomass, indicating increased levels of competition for a constant but limited number of feeding sites. Over time, a log linear relationship emerged between multiplication rate of M. hapla and Pi. Slopes of -0.90953 for combined eggs and juveniles and -0.71349 for mature females indicated a gradual approach to ceiling densities. Reproductive rates decreased exponentially from an initial maximal value of 200 to a relatively constant rate of 53 eggs per female.  相似文献

Sexually selected male ejaculate traits are expected to depend on the resource state of males. Theory predicts that males in good condition will produce larger ejaculates, but that ejaculate composition will depend on the relative production costs of ejaculate components and the risk of sperm competition experienced by low- and high-condition males. Under some conditions, when low condition leads to poorer performance in sperm competition, males in low condition may produce ejaculates with higher sperm content relative to their total ejaculate and may even transfer more sperm than high-condition males in an absolute sense. Previous studies in insects have shown that males in good condition transfer larger ejaculates or more sperm, but it has not been clear whether increased sperm content represents a shift in allocation or simply a larger ejaculate, and thus the condition dependence of ejaculate composition has been largely untested. We examined condition dependence in ejaculate by manipulating adult male condition in a ladybird beetle (Adalia bipunctata) in which males transfer three distinct ejaculate components during mating: sperm, non-sperm ejaculate retained within the female reproductive tract, and a spermatophore capsule that females eject and ingest following mating. We found that high condition males indeed transferred larger ejaculates, potentially achieved by an increased rate of ejaculate transfer, and allocated less to sperm compared with low-condition males. Low-condition males transferred ejaculates with absolutely and proportionally more sperm. This study provides the first experimental evidence for a condition-dependent shift in ejaculate composition.  相似文献

Stretch of activated muscles leads to enhanced forces compared to isometric contractions at the same muscle length and the same level of activation. This so-called residual force enhancement (RFE) is thought to be a property of all muscles and preparations. However, observations concerning the existence, amount and duration of RFE are inconsistent, especially for voluntary activated large human muscles. Therefore, physiological relevance for daily activity is still questionable and the purpose of this study was to examine whether RFE is present in voluntary sub-maximal activated quadriceps femoris (QF). Seated in a rotational dynamometer with EMG attached to superficial parts of QF, 30 subjects performed isometric and isometric-eccentric-isometric contractions (20° stretch, ω = 60° s−1) at 30% and 60% of maximum voluntary activation (MVA) and contraction (MVC). To account for the complexity of the multi-headed QF, a compensation model based on physiological cross-sectional area and individual EMG-torque relations was used to interpret EMG data. For both levels of intensity and both feedback control strategies, ANOVA identified significant RFE (at the same level of activation) and reduced activation (at the same level of torque). Against expectations, RFE was independent of the level of activation.  相似文献

Long-range sex pheromones have been subjected to substantial research with a particular focus on their biosynthesis, peripheral perception, central processing and the resulting orientation behaviour of perceivers. Fundamental to the research on sex attractants was the assumption that they primarily coordinate species recognition. However, especially when they are produced by the less limiting sex (usually males), the evolution of heightened condition dependence might be expected and long-range sex pheromones might, therefore, also inform about a signaller''s quality. Here we provide, to our knowledge, the first comprehensive study of the role of a male''s long-range pheromone in mate choice that combines chemical analyses, video observations and field experiments with a multifactorial manipulation of males'' condition. We show that the emission of the long-distance sex pheromone of the burying beetle, Nicrophorus vespilloides is highly condition-dependent and reliably reflects nutritional state, age, body size and parasite load—key components of an individual''s somatic state. Both, the quantity and ratio of the pheromone components were affected but the time invested in pheromone emission was largely unaffected by a male''s condition. Moreover, the variation in pheromone emission caused by the variation in condition had a strong effect on the attractiveness of males in the field, with males in better nutritional condition, of older age, larger body size and bearing less parasites being more attractive. That a single pheromone is influenced by so many aspects of the somatic state and causes such variation in a male''s attractiveness under field conditions was hitherto unknown and highlights the need to integrate indicator models of sexual selection into pheromone research.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal changes in the light and temperature dependence of photosynthesis were investigated in field grown plants of Mercurialis perennis and Geum urbanum. In both species changes in photosynthetic capacity were closely related to the development of the overstorey canopy. In G. urbanum there was a marked shift in the temperature dependence of photosynthesis through the season whereas no such pattern was found in M. perennis. Model predictions of field rates of photosynthesis were made using the measurements of light and temperature dependence in the laboratory and validated against field observations. Long term continuous records of light and temperature in the field were used in conjunction with the model to make predictions of carbon acquisition in shoots of the two species through the season. These calculations indicated that G. urbanum was able to take advantage of high light levels just prior to canopy closure through a combination of high photosynthetic capacity, the ability to maintain photosynthesis at relatively low temperatures and the presence of overwintering leaves. In M. perennis leaf development was early enough to utilise the high spring light period. After canopy closure M. perennis maintained a higher average rate of CO2 flux due to a combination of high apparent quantum efficiency and low rates of respiration.  相似文献

The pH dependence of the reaction of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide with the essential aspartyl-61 residue in subunit c of Escherichia coli ATP synthase was compared in membranes and in a detergent dispersed preparation of the enzyme. The rate of reaction was estimated by measuring the inactivation of ATPase activity. The reaction with the detergent dispersed form of the enzyme proved to be pH sensitive with the essential aspartyl group titrating with a pKa=8. However, when measured with E. coli membranes, the reaction proved to be pH insensitive. The results suggest that the reacting aspartyl-61 residues are shielded from the bulk aqueous solvent when in the membrane, but then become aqueous-accessible following detergent solubilization.  相似文献
