The contribution of a bee plant species to honey production depends on the plant’s nectar secretion quality and quantity, which is mainly governed by biotic and abiotic factors. The aim of the current study, was to investigate the nectar secretion dynamics and honey production potential of 14 major bee plant species of the target area. We examined the quantity and dynamics of nectar sugar per flower five times a day using a nectar sugar washing technique and direct measuring of nectar with calibrated capillary tubes. The average nectar sugar amount of the species varied from 0.41 mg/flower to 7.7 mg/flower (P < 0.0001). The honey sugar per flower was used to extrapolate the honey production potential per plant and per hectare of land. Accordingly the honey production potential of the species observed to vary from 14 kg/hectare in Otostegia fruticosa to 829 kg/hectare in Ziziphus spina-christi. The nectar secretion dynamics of the species generally showed an increasing trend early in the morning, peaking toward midday, followed by a decline but different species observed to have different peak nectar secretion times. Generally, the tree species secreted more nectar sugar/flower than the herbs. The nectar secretion amount of the species was positively correlated with the ambient temperature, indicating the adaptation of the species to hot climatic conditions. However, different species were observed to have a different optimum temperature for peak nectar secretion. Despite the limited rainfall and high temperature of the area, many plants were found to have good potential for honey production. The monetary value of honey per hectare of the studied honeybee plant species can be of equal or greater than the per-hectare monetary value of some cultivated crops that require numerous inputs. In addition, the information generated is believed to be useful in apiary site selection and to estimate the honey bee colony carrying capacity of an area.  相似文献

A long-standing paradigm in biology has been that hummingbirds and passerine birds select for different nectar properties in the plants they pollinate. Here we show that this dichotomy is false and a more useful distinction is that between specialized and generalized bird pollination systems. Flowers adapted for sunbirds, which are specialized passerine nectarivores, have nectar similar to that of hummingbird flowers in terms of volume (approx. 10-30 microl), concentration (approx. 15-25% w/w) and sucrose content (approx. 40-60% of total sugar). In contrast, flowers adapted to generalized bird pollinators are characterized by large volumes (approx. 40-100 microl) of extremely dilute (approx. 8-12%) nectar with minimal sucrose (approx. 0-5%). These differences in nectar traits are highly significant even when statistical analyses are based on phylogenetically separate pairwise comparisons between taxa. We present several hypotheses for the association between nectar properties and specificity in bird pollination systems.  相似文献

Planthopper (Delphacidae) pests have broken out frequently in Asia over the last decade leading to interest in enhancing the impact of natural enemies by growing nectar plants on the bunds that border rice fields. Such targeted use of plant diversity is popular in other crop systems but there is a marked lack of information on the scope for its use in rice, particularly the important aspect of which plant species to use. This study used Y-tube olfactometer assays to measure the response of two important parasitoids of delphacid pests to candidate nectar plants. Anagrus optabilis exhibited significant attraction to the air from six of the seven plant species whilst Anagrus nilaparvatae appeared more selective, exhibiting attraction to only seven of the 23 plants screened and repulsion to one. Sesamum indicum, Emilia sonchifolia, and Impatiens balsamena were the only three plants attractive to both parasitoids. Laboratory longevity of adult female A. nilaparvatae and A. optabilis with access to sesame flowers was significantly greater than with access to sesame from which the flowers were removed plus water. Similarly, both parasitoids parasitized significantly more brown planthopper (Nilaparvatae lugens) eggs in the presence of sesame flowers. Handling time of A. nilaparvatae was reduced from 31.29 to 18.36 min by access to sesame nectar. Findings show that sesame has a marked beneficial effect on key parameters of Anagrus spp. and justifies further evaluation of its utility as a nectar plant to improve biological control in Asian rice systems.  相似文献

Bees get a head start on honey production   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nectar concentration is assumed to remain constant during transport by honeybees between flowers and hive. We sampled crop contents of nectar foragers on Aloe greatheadii var. davyana, a major winter bee plant in South Africa. The nectar is dilute (approx. 20% w/w), but the crop contents of bees captured on flowers are significantly more concentrated. In returning foragers, the concentration increases further to 38–40%, accompanied by a volume decrease. The doubling of sugar concentration suggests that nectar is regurgitated onto the tongue and evaporated during foraging and on the return flight. Processing of the dilute nectar into honey thus begins early, aided by low ambient humidities. This has implications for honeybee thermoregulation, water balance and energetics during foraging, and for the communication of nectar quality to recruits.  相似文献

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) (TP) is a valuable medicinal plant from Asteraceae family with various pharmaceutical and therapeutic properties. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid (SA) on the physiological and morphological responses of TP under salinity stress. Salinity was induced by NaCl and CaCl2 (2:1) at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 mM levels. SA was applied as foliar application at 0, 200 and 300 ppm concentrations. Plant height, leaf and shoot number, fresh and dry weight and essential oil, starch, sugar, protein, proline, catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbic peroxidase (APX) contents were as measured morpho-physiological traits. The results showed that SA significantly (P  0.05) improved the measured traits and caused higher tolerance in TP plants under salinity stress. The essential oil content increased with increasing the salinity level up to 90 mM, which was more significant when combined with SA application. All of the measured traits except proline content, antioxidant enzymes, essential oil and sugar decreased at high salinity levels.  相似文献

Spatial aggregation of plants of high nectar production, receiving an enhanced pollinator service is known to occur in Echium vulgare. Moreover, an emanating effect of nectar production on pollinator visits may occur, i.e. many pollinator visits may be observed around high nectar patches. Consequently, gene flow within patches of plants of high nectar production and their close neighbours may result in genetic structure. In this study, we investigated whether aggregation of total nectar production (nectar production per flower×number of flowers) and its emanating effect resulted in genetic structure in a natural E. vulgare population. We compared the spatial structure of total nectar production, pollinator visits and microsatellite markers using spatial autocorrelation analysis. Increased geitonogamy, caused by longer boutlengths in plants of high nectar production may generate genetic structure. We estimated selfing rates of plants of the highest and lowest total nectar production. Spatial aggregation of total nectar production occurred on a relatively small scale up to 2.83 m. A significant emanating correlation between total nectar production and pollinator visits was observed on a relatively large scale up to a 4.24 m. Thus, around patches of high nectar production numbers of pollinator visits were relatively high, while few visits were observed around patches of low nectar production. Weak genetic structure was present on a small scale up to 2.20 m. This corresponded with the scale of aggregation of total nectar production. High gene flow around the patches of high nectar production seems to weaken genetic structure. This is supported by the relatively low selfing rates. The average selfing rate of the plants of highest nectar production was 8.8% and that of the plants of lowest nectar production 5.0%. Low gene flow within and around low nectar patches sustain a weak genetic structure or, conversely, may have caused it in the first instance. Results indicate the importance of spatial structure of nectar production for pollinator movement.  相似文献

Variations in floral traits and floral structures influence plant mating systems. Hibiscus trionum produces large, showy flowers typical of an outcrossing species, yet flowers are autonomously self-pollinated. In this study, we measured floral morphology, breeding system and outcrossing rate estimated by ISSR markers. Results indicate that two types of flowers were observed in H. trionum, and the type I with bigger petals appears to be much more visible to pollinators, demonstrated by than type II flowers with smaller petals. The flowers with hand pollination were closed 1 h earlier than intact flowers, whether they were type I or II. The relationship between the amount of pollen deposited on the stigma and the number of seeds per capsule was highly significant, and 80 or more pollens per flower can make the mean number of seeds (mean = 37) in H. trionum. Delayed selfing in H. trionum did not provide a large contribution to seed production, since reproductive assurance were only 0.025. However, successful reproduction of 72.5% flowers in the absence of pollinators suggested that selfing provides reproductive assurance during seasons, in which pollinators were limiting. The multilocus outcrossing rates in different populations varied from 0.982 to 1.200, with a mean of 1.116. Our data provide an empirical demonstration of a predominantly outcrossing species with potential delayed selfing when pollinators are absent or scarce.  相似文献

The glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar) is a significant pest of grapevines in California due to vectoring Xylella fastidiosa Wells et al., Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) and vetch (Vicia sativa L. cv. ‘cahaba white’) are potential nectar-producing cover crop plants in California vineyards that could enhance Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, a parasitoid of H. vitripennis. Three aspects of these 2 plant species were evaluated. (1) Effect on parasitoid fitness: In the laboratory, buckwheat and vetch enhanced survival of G. ashmeadi by 9 and 6 days, respectively, compared to water. G. ashmeadi offspring production was 81% and 142% greater when females were provided vetch or buckwheat, respectively, compared to water. Buckwheat decreased G. ashmeadi female offspring by 19% compared to water and vetch. (2) Nectar production phenology in southern California: From April through September, buckwheat required only 23–32 days from sowing to nectar-producing flowers. Vetch required an additional 14–33 days to produce extrafloral nectar during June–August. The range in length of the nectar producing period between August 2007 and November 2007 was 41–52 days and 163–164 days for buckwheat and vetch, respectively. (3) X. fastidiosa Wells et al. host testing and H. vitripennis transmission studies: Needle inoculation of cover crop plants showed that X. fastidiosa successfully infected and replicated in buckwheat, vetch, sweet alyssum [Lobularia maritima (L.) Desv.] and coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), plants that were assessed here or elsewhere as nectar producing cover crops for use in vineyards. H. vitripennis successfully transmitted X. fastidiosa between buckwheat and grapevine in the greenhouse and field. H. vitripennis successfully transmitted X. fastidiosa from grapevine to vetch in the field, while transmission studies investigating movement from vetch to grapevine in the greenhouse were inconclusive.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is a metalloid that can occur naturally in soils from the Cretaceous shale deposits of a prehistoric inland sea in the western United States. Agricultural irrigation and runoff solubilizes Se from these shales, causing buildups of toxic levels of selenate (SeO42−) in water and soil. Our main objective was to investigate the accumulation of Se in two Brassicaceae species chosen for their potential as phytoremediators of Se contaminated soils. We tested the hypothesis that Se will accumulate in the pollen and nectar of two plant species and negatively affect floral traits and plant reproduction. Certain species of Brassicaceae can accumulate high concentrations of Se in their leaf tissues. In this study Se accumulation in plant tissues was investigated under greenhouse conditions. Se accumulator (Brassica juncea) and Se hyperaccumulator (Stanleya pinnata) plants were irrigated in sand culture with 0 μM selenate (control), 8 μM selenate, and 13 μM selenate.Nectar and pollen in S. pinnata contained up to 150 μg Se mL−1 wet weight and 12900 μg Se g−1 dry weight when irrigated with 8 μM selenate. Se levels in nectar (110 μg Se mL−1 wet weight) and pollen (1700 μg Se g−1 dry weight) were not as high in B. juncea. Floral display width, petal area and seed pod length were significantly reduced in the 13 μM selenate Se treatment in B. juncea. S. pinnata floral traits and seeds were unaffected by the Se treatments. This study provides crucial information about where some of the highest concentrations of Se are found in two phytoremediators, and may shed light on the potential risks pollinators may face when foraging upon these accumulating plants. In the field, duration of the plant's exposure, Se soil and water concentrations as well as other environmental factors may also play important roles in determining how much Se is accumulated into the leaf and floral tissues. Our greenhouse study shed light on two species’ ability to accumulate Se, as well as determined the specific plant tissues where Se concentrations are highest.  相似文献

Plant biomass is a key parameter for estimating terrestrial ecosystem carbon (C) stocks, which varies greatly as a result of specific environmental conditions. Here, we tested environmental driving factors affecting plant biomass in natural grassland in the Loess Plateau, China. We found that above-ground biomass (AGB) and below-ground biomass (BGB) had a similar change trend in the order of Stipa bungeana > Leymus secalinus > Artemisia sacrorum > Artemisia scoparia, whereas shoot ratio (R/S) displayed an opposite change trend. There was a significantly positive linear relationship between the AGB and BGB, regardless of plant species (p < 0.05). Furthermore, more than 50% of the AGB were found in 20–50 cm of plant height in Compositae plants (A. sacrorum, A. scoparia), whereas over 60% of the AGB were found in 20–80 cm of plant height in Gramineae plants (S. bungeana, L. secalinus). For each plant species, more than 75% of the BGB was distributed in 0–10 cm soil depth, and 20% was distributed in 10–20 cm soil depth, while less than 5% was distributed in 20–40 cm soil depth. Further, AGB and BGB were highly affected by environmental driving factors (soil properties, plant traits, topographic properties), which were identified by the structural equation model (SEM) and the generalized additive models (GAMs). In addition, AGB was directly affected by plant traits, and BGB was directly affected by soil properties, and soil properties associated with plant traits that affected AGB and BGB through interactive effects were 9.12% and 3.59%, respectively. However, topographic properties had a weak influence on ABG and BGB (as revealed by the lowest total pathway effect). Besides, soil organic carbon (SOC), soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and plant height had a higher relative contribution to AGB and BGB. Our results indicate that environmental driving factors affect plant biomass in natural grassland in the Loess Plateau.  相似文献

A community of insect herbivores has established on eucalyptus species in California following their introduction from Australia. A number of the species are under complete or partial biological control. A response to introduction of additional pest species into the complex has been the application of systemic insecticides to infested trees. Natural enemies that have been introduced to control the various pest species feed on the nectar of treated trees, and thus may be affected by these pesticides. In this study, Eucalyptus rudis trees were treated at label rates with the neonicotinoid systemic insecticide imidacloprid and nectar sampled at 5 months post-treatment during the spring bloom. The concentration of imidacloprid and its toxic metabolites in nectar was measured by ELISA at 660 ppb. Adults of the encyrtid egg parasitoid Avetianella longoi that were fed floral nectar collected from treated trees had significantly lower survival and reproductive fitness than adults fed nectar from untreated trees. In feeding bioassays, in which the adults were fed a range of concentrations of imidacloprid in sugar water, the LC50 for A. longoi was 212 ppb imidacloprid. Bioassays were also conducted with the braconid larval parasitoid, Syngaster lepidus. The LC50 for S. lepidus was 288 ppb imidacloprid. The insecticide appears to be concentrating in the nectar at higher levels than reported from other plant species and at concentrations exceeding the LC50 for two important parasitoids. If tree treatments become widespread as a result of continual introductions of new eucalypt herbivores, established biological control programs could be at significant risk.  相似文献

Habitat management is an important element in sustainable agriculture and can be used to maximize a range of ecosystem services that support crop production. An important example of such ecosystem services is biological control of pests which can be enhanced by providing arthropod natural enemies with suitable floral resources. The potential risk of this approach, however, is that flowering plants may enhance the fitness of the targeted pests as well. We conducted experiments to identify selective plant species that would improve the longevity and parasitization rate of the parasitoid wasp Microplitis mediator without benefiting its host pest, the cabbage moth Mamestra brassicae. Effects on longevity were also assessed for Diadegma fenestrale, a generalist parasitoid wasp attacking lepidopteran pests. Additionally, we compared the effects of floral and extrafloral nectar, the latter being formed in some plant species and can significantly prolong the duration of nectar availability for natural enemies. Longevity of M. mediator and D. fenestrale as well as parasitization rates of M. mediator were significantly increased by the presence of Fagopyrum esculentum (floral nectar), Centaurea cyanus (floral and extrafloral nectar) and non-flowering Vicia sativa (extrafloral nectar). M. mediator parasitized 202.3 ± 29.7 M. brassicae larvae during its lifetime when presented F. esculentum, compared to 14.4 ± 3.4 larvae in the absence of floral resources. Extrafloral nectar of C. cyanus and V. sativa was as suitable for M. mediator as floral nectar and significantly increased longevity and parasitization rates. Longevity and fecundity of M. brassicae were not supported by the plant species tested. These results stress the importance of plant screening to achieve plant selectivity and to maximize biological control. F. esculentum, C. cyanus and V. sativa are recommended as selective plant species to enhance parasitoids of M. brassicae.  相似文献

Defensive proteins, such as polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and trypsin inhibitor (TI), are induced by herbivore wounding and exogenous methyl jasmonate application in various plant species. This study was conducted to measure induction of PPO and TI in radish, sweet pepper, tomato, and water spinach plants following herbivore wounding (I), methyl jasmonate application (M), and a combination of the two treatments (M + I). The effect of induced responses was also examined against third instar Spodoptera litura Fab. PPO activity was induced in radish by treatment I only; in sweet pepper, by treatments I and M; in tomato, by treatments I, M, and M + I; and in water spinach, by treatments M and M + I. The activity of TI was enhanced 1.2–1.4-fold in radish, sweet pepper, and tomato by M and M + I treatments, whereas in water spinach, it was enhanced 1.2-fold by all 3 treatments. The relative growth rate (RGR) of S. litura was reduced by 53% on radish plants following M treatment only. It was reduced by 37% and 42% on sweet paper plants following M and M + I treatment, respectively. RGR was significantly reduced on test tomato plants following I, M, and M + I treatments. The RGR of S. litura was unaffected on water spinach plants following any treatment. Collectively, the results of this study indicated that induction of plant defensive proteins in response to S. litura feeding or exogenous methyl jasmonate application varied among plant species, which further affected the induced plant resistance to the caterpillars.  相似文献

In this study, flower color, nectar properties, and inflorescence scent composition of eight natural and one introduced Buddleja davidii populations were investigated. Flower color of B. davidii was determined using the Royal Horticultural Society Color Chart and ranged from purple to white. Volume of nectar produced by a single flower ranged from 0.36 μl to 0.64 μl and total sugar concentration produced by inflorescence ranged from 17.0% to 33.5% in all populations. Floral nectar volume and sugar concentration were not significantly different between two flower color morphs in the B. davidii populations. Floral scents of B. davidii were collected using dynamic headspace adsorption and identified with coupled gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. In total, 33 compounds were identified from the inflorescences of B. davidii. The identified scents were divided into five chemical classes based on their biosynthetic origin: irregular terpenes, monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, fatty acid derivatives, and benzenoids. The scent profiles in all populations were dominated by few components, such as: 4-oxoisophorone, E,E-α-farnesene, and 1-octen-3-ol. Given that inflorescence scents from natural and introduced individuals coming from the same population have discrepant chemical composition, we infer that phenotype plasticity may mediate floral scent composition. Based on the comparison of present and other data available on floral scent in B. davidii, we conclude that inflorescence scent may serve as a specific signal helping to attract pollinating butterflies to locate flowers as nectar sources, and may have evolved in conjunction with the sensory capabilities of butterflies and moths as a specific group of pollinators.  相似文献

In support of an ongoing study to evaluate potential farmscaping plants for utilization in organic vegetable production systems, we examined the effects of the nectar of three flowering plant species, sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima), buckwheat (Fagopyrum sagittatum), and licorice mint (Agastache foeniculum), on the lifespan and body nutrient levels of the wasp, Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a key parasitoid of some caterpillar pests of vegetable crops in the USA. The greatest longevity (~16 days) was recorded for honey-fed wasps (positive control). Buckwheat significantly increased the lifespan of female and male wasps by at least two-fold relative to wasps provided water only (longevity = 3–4 days). Licorice mint significantly increased female longevity and numerically increased male longevity. Sweet alyssum slightly increased longevity of both sexes but this was not significantly different from the water only control. Females had a significantly longer longevity than males on all the diet treatments. The greatest carbohydrate nutrient levels (sugar content and glycogen) were recorded in honey-fed wasps followed by wasps fed buckwheat, whereas very little nutrients were detected in wasps provided sweet alyssum, licorice mint or water only. However, female wasps were observed to attempt to feed on all three flowering plant species. Thus, the low nutrient levels detected in wasps provided sweet alyssum or licorice mint may be because the nectars were not accessible or were of poor quality. Further studies will evaluate the effects of the promising farmscaping plants on the beneficial and pest insect communities in the field.  相似文献

The interactions among plants and pollinators are crucial for plant reproduction because they structure gene flow among individual plants and among populations of plants. Throughout the Neotropics there has been a strong increase in recent years in the use of artificial nectar feeders in private nature reserves to encourage ecotourism through prolonged observations of hummingbirds. Currently, there is considerable uncertainty whether artificial feeders have a detrimental effect on plant reproduction through competition or a beneficial effect through facilitation. This uncertainty is disconcerting given that nature reserves harbour many rare and endangered plants whose successful reproduction is a conservation goal. To assess whether nectar feeders affected hummingbird visitation to flowering plants, we determined visitation rates in ten flowering species in five Andean nature reserves in Ecuador. We found that visitation rates tended to be higher within 5 m around the feeders than they were at 100 m, 500 m, or 1.5 km distance to the feeders, therefore indicating that nectar feeders tended to facilitate flower visitation at close distance. Because visitation rates at 100 m and 500 m distance from the feeders did not differ from those at 1.5 km, we suggest that feeders do not draw hummingbirds away from flower resources, but if they have an effect on flower visitation at all, they tend to facilitate flower visitation rather than reduce plant reproduction.  相似文献

Many zoophilous plants attract their pollinators by offering nectar as a reward. In gynodioecious plants (i.e. populations are composed of female and hermaphrodite individuals) nectar production has been repeatedly reported to be larger in hermaphrodite compared to female flowers even though nectar production across the different floral phases in dichogamous plants (i.e. plants with time separation of pollen dispersal and stigma receptivity) has rarely been examined. In this study, sugar production in nectar standing crop and secretion rate were investigated in Geranium sylvaticum, a gynodioecious plant species with protandry (i.e. with hermaphrodite flowers releasing their pollen before the stigma is receptive). We found that flowers from hermaphrodites produced more nectar than female flowers in terms of total nectar sugar content. In addition, differences in nectar production among floral phases were found in hermaphrodite flowers but not in female flowers. In hermaphrodite flowers, maximum sugar content coincided with pollen presentation and declined slightly towards the female phase, indicating nectar reabsorption, whereas in female flowers sugar content did not differ between the floral phases. These differences in floral reward are discussed in relation to visitation patterns by pollinators and seed production in this species.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the dispersal pattern of airborne fluoride emissions, from a single source in the city of Ouro Preto, Brazil, the fluoride impact on some herbaceous plant species was studied using the plants as passive bioindicators. Foliar fluoride contents of eight species collected at different distances from an aluminium smelter were analyzed. The plant species were: Baccaharis dracunculifolia, Bidens pilosa, Borreria verticillata, Calopogonium mucunoides, Erigeron bonariensis, Hedychium coronarium, Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea cairica. In all species the fluoride accumulation decreased exponentially with the distance from the emission source. There was specific and distinct variation in fluoride accumulation among the species, a group of high-accumulator species (B. dracunculifolia and Bidens pilosa) and a group of low-accumulator species (I. cairica, H. coronarium and Borreria verticillata). C. mucunoides and E. bonariensis occupied an intermediate position. There was a pattern of plant contamination response during the periods analyzed. The plants nearest to the emission source, between 0.4 km northwest and 1.1 km east, showed fluoride contamination traits in leaves reaching values between 100 and 500 μg g−1. Moreover, fluoride contents higher than 1000 μg g−1 were found in these plants. At the most distant stations, situated 2.9 km northwest and 6 km east from the factory, the fluoride content of the dry matter was less than 10 μg g−1 showing that plants at those distances were submitted to minimum contamination. There were different patterns of tolerance among the species analyzed. While B. dracunculifolia accumulated fluoride up to 1500 μg g−1 in dry matter without any signs of injury, Borreria verticillata showed severe necrosis in leaves, but the fluoride content found was not higher than 120 μg g−1.  相似文献

The effects of two entomopathogenic fungal endophytes, Beauveria bassiana and Purpureocillium lilacinum, were assessed on the growth of cultivated cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) and development of the cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa zea). In two replicate greenhouse trials, cotton plants were inoculated as seed treatments with two concentrations of B. bassiana or P. lilacinum conidia and evaluated for effects on both plant dry biomass, number of nodes and number of developing flowers (squares). We similarly treated cotton plants and evaluated H. zea performance using no-choice in planta assays starting at the 2nd larval instar. Treatment with both fungal endophytes resulted in a significant increases in plant dry biomass (ANOVA, P = 0.024). Plant developmental stage and number of squares were also significantly enhanced in the endophyte treated plants (ANOVA, P = 0.005 and P = 0.027, respectively). The survivorship of H. zea was significantly different among the endophyte treatment groups (Kaplan–Meier, P = 0.02), where insects feeding on control plants exhibited higher survival than insects on the endophyte treated plants. There were no significant endophyte treatment effects on larval or pupal weights of H. zea individuals. There was no endophyte effect on days to pupation among treatments, but there was a marginal effect on days to eclosion (Kaplan–Meier, P = 0.07). Overall, our results demonstrate (i) the positive plant growth enhancing effects of the target endophyes on cultivated cotton under greenhouse conditions and (ii) the negative effects of endophytic P. lilacinum and B. bassiana on H. zea survivorship and development using whole plant assays.  相似文献

In this work, an integrated one-step alkaline–extrusion process was tested as pretreatment for sugar production from barley straw (BS) biomass. The influence of extrusion temperature (T) and the ratio NaOH/BS dry matter (w/w) (R) into the extruder on pretreatment effectiveness was investigated in a twin-screw extruder at bench scale. A 23 factorial design of experiments was used to analyze the effect of process conditions [T: 50–100 °C; R: 2.5–7.5% (w/w)] on composition and enzymatic digestibility of pretreated substrate (extrudate). The optimum conditions for a maximum glucan to glucose conversion were determined to be R = 6% and T = 68 °C. At these conditions, glucan yield reached close to 90% of theoretical, while xylan conversion was 71% of theoretical. These values are 5 and 9 times higher than that of the untreated material, which supports the great potential of this one-step combined pre-treatment technology for sugar production from lignocellulosic substrates. The absence of sugar degradation products is a relevant advantage over other traditional methods for a biomass to ethanol production process since inhibitory effect of such product on sugar fermentation would be prevented.  相似文献
