Despite the fact that many parasitic and hemiparasitic plant species such as mistletoes are dioecious and occur in both the new and the old world, few data exist on variation in the sex ratio and allocation to reproduction in these taxa. We investigated 1) the sex-ratio of the xylem-tapping mistletoe Phoradendron juniperinum in relation to its age and position within the canopy of its host tree Juniperus osteosperma, and 2) reproductive effort in relation to the gender and age of mistletoe plants. Our surveys showed that P. juniperinum has a male-biased sex ratio. Despite this predominance of male individuals, females lived longer and had a greater reproductive effort than did males. A statistical analysis of the age distribution data indicated that the peak in the frequency of reproductively mature individuals was later in females than in males. These gender-specific distributions may have resulted 1) from sequential hermaphroditism (age-specific sex switching), or 2) because the average age of peak reproduction is later in female individuals. Because sex is genetically determined in a closely related genus of mistletoe and because we have no data to indicate sex switching in this species, we feel that our data support the interpretation that female individuals, on average, show a peak in reproductive vigor at an older age relative to males. While delayed reproduction in females may be favored because reproductive effort and success appear to be age-dependent in females of this species, both sexes can become reproductively mature relatively early in life. Further, because 1) allocation to reproduction as a function of age increases more rapidly for females of this species relative to males, and 2) because there may be a higher resource cost associated with reproduction in females, we hypothesized that female individuals would be more abundant in the best quality locations within the host tree so as to maximize the opportunity to meet those costs. In spite of the association between gender and some host characteristics, there was no indication that female plants were located in sites most favorable to either their carbon or water balance. We discuss reasons why this may be the case.  相似文献

I studied the reproduction of the 9 g nectarivorous bat Glossophaga commissarisi (Phyllostomidae: Glossophaginae) in relation to its food choice in a Costa Rican lowland rain forest over more than 2 yr. Reproduction was bimodal with birth peaks in April/May and October/November. The first birth peak coincided with a period of frugivory, whereas the second occurred during a period of almost exclusive nectarivory. All adult females recaptured in consecutive reproductive periods were reproductively active on both occasions, indicating that individual G. commissarisi females regularly reproduce twice per year at the study site. Throughout the annual cycle the mean testis length of the males correlated best with the proportion of females lactating, suggesting a post partum estrous pattern. Animals became reproductively active at about 1 yr of age. Fecal samples showed that females consumed significantly more insects than males.  相似文献

Developmental success on 47 species of plant and reproductive compatibility were studied for four strains of the European red mite,Panonychus ulmi (Koch), collected from dwarf bamboo, elm and apple trees. The host range was variable in those strains and there was no plant species on which all four strains were able to reach maturity.Intra-populational crosses in the dwarf-bamboo strain and the two apple strains of mites, as well as crosses between the two apple strains, gave both female and male progeny. Inter-populational crosses between the dwarf-bamboo and apple strains produced only male progeny, as in the case where females of each strain were kept virgin, indicating that these two were reproductively incompatible and had an arrhenotokous reproductive system. When females of the elm strain were crossed with males of the elm, dwarf-bamboo or apple strain, no males were produced, as in the case for virgin females of the elm strain which had a thelytokous reproductive system. It is thus concluded that the strains derived from different host species were reproductively incompatible with one another.  相似文献

The Indian pygmy field mouse, Mus terricolor, is a tiny, yet economically and ecologically important crop pest found throughout South-East Asia. There are no systematic reports exploring its reproductive physiology. We report the presence of distinct periods of annual reproductive activity and quiescence in M. terricolor. Body weight in males and females, relative weights of testis, epididymis and seminal vesicle in males, ovarian and uterine weight in females, gonadal histomorphic changes, testicular and ovarian cholesterol, sialic acid in epididymis, fructose in seminal vesicle, uterine protein content, melatonin in males and females, testosterone in males, estradiol, and progesterone in females were studied over a period of three years in both wild-caught and lab-acclimated mice. The number of Graafian follicles and corpora lutea, and plasma estradiol and progesterone, along with relative weights of ovary and uterus in females exhibited a peak in the months of October–January, compared to June. Based on histomorphic and hormonal status, the major reproductively active season is the winter (short-day breeding). There is a brief period of sub-maximal reproductive activity in April. M. terricolor is reproductively inactive in the summer, monsoons, and autumn. The results establish M. terricolor as a seasonal breeder in the field, with interesting implications for pest management.  相似文献

Body size strongly influences fitness, with larger individuals benefiting in terms of both greater productivity and survivorship; for reverse sexual size dimorphic (RSD) species, this relationship may be more complex. We examined the selection pressures acting on body size in male and female Merlins Falco columbarius to assess whether larger or smaller individuals of this RSD species were favoured in terms of survival and breeding performance. For males and females there were clear links between body size and survival but the exact relationship varied by sex. Among males, birds that survived each year class were larger than those that died and yearlings were on average smaller than older birds, but there were no measurable differences among adult males (age 2+). Among females, larger individuals aged 1 and 2 years were more likely to survive, but this size‐based pattern was not apparent in older age classes. Size early in life predicted the lifespan in male Merlins but not as strongly as for females and not for the largest individuals. Reproductive performance based on brood size was not associated with body size in either males or females, but there was a weak positive relationship between female body size and lifetime reproductive success. Selection appears to favour larger males and females but there is no indication that the population is evolving towards bigger individuals, perhaps in part due to selection against the largest birds. Increased survival may allow larger and higher quality individuals to occupy higher quality territories as they age and thereby to accrue greater lifetime reproductive success in the process.  相似文献

Summary The polychaeteOphryotrocha puerilis is a male-to-female sex-changer, whereasO. labronica has separate sexes throughout life. In other respects the two species are remarkably similar: they occur in the same habitat, they look the same, they eat the same things, and in someO. labronica populations sex-changers can actually be found. The size-advantage hypothesis predicts that inO. puerilis males should not benefit reproductively from a size increase as much as males inO. labronica: henceO. puerilis but notO. labronica males should change to the female sex at a certain size. I experimentally compared reproductive success at different body sizes between the two species. In isolated male-female pairs reproductive rate increased significantly with female body size but not with male body size, and this pattern was the same in both species. Hence male fecundityper se cannot account for the difference in reproductive type between the two species. In other experiments I investigated if larger males gained access to more females because they were superior competitors for mates or were preferred by females, compared to small males. InO. puerilis the combined effect of these two factors conferred no size advantage to the males, whereas inO. labronica larger males acquired more females than did smaller males. Hence interactions among males and females, in accordance with the size-advantage hypothesis, can explain why sex change is maintained inO. puerilis, and why separate sexes are maintained inO. labronica.  相似文献

Macrolophus caliginosus is a polyphagous mirid bug native to the Mediterranean area where it is widely used as a biological control agent, both in protected and open-field vegetable crops. Its reproductive biology remains largely unknown and a better understanding of it will improve mass rearing and release strategies. In the present work, we studied the development of reproductive organs in females and males and how age conditioned receptiveness to mating in both sexes.Females with mature eggs in their ovarioles appear 3–4 days after adult molt with a similar pattern of ovary maturation in virgin females as in females that were kept with males of the same age. Newly molted males were found to already have active sperm in their seminal vesicles but their accessory glands did not completely develop until 3 days later. Receptivity for copulation paralleled ovarian and accessory gland maturation.  相似文献

Changes in reproductive state or the environment may affect the sensitivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-andrenal (HPA) axis. However, little is known about the dynamics of the resulting corticosteroid stress response, in particular in tropical mammals. In this study, we address the modulation of corticosterone release in response to different reproductive conditions and seasonality in 326 free-living common fruit-eating bats (Artibeus jamaicensis) on Barro Colorado Island in Panama during dry and wet seasons. We present strong evidence that stress sensitivity is primarily modulated by reproductive condition. In reproductively active females, corticosterone increases were more rapid and reached higher levels, but also decreased significantly faster than in inactive females. The corticosterone response was weaker in reproducing males than in females and delayed compared to non-reproductive males. Testes volume in reproductively active males was negatively correlated with corticosterone concentrations. Our findings suggest differentiated dynamics in the corticosterone stress response between sexes, potentially reflecting conflicting ecological demands. In females, a strong acute corticosterone response may represent high stress- and risk-sensitivity that facilitates escape and thus helps to protect reproduction. In males, suppression during reproductive activity could reflect lowered stress sensitivity to avoid chronically elevated corticosterone levels in times of frequent aggressive and therefore costly inter-male encounters.  相似文献

In this study we investigated the male testicular activity and the reproductive condition of females in relation to their external reproductive characteristics (pregnant, lactating, post-lactating) in the phyllostomid bat Artibeus lituratus (Olfers, 1818). Five hundred and twenty six individuals were examined (197 males and 329 females) in the period December 2001 to May 2003. Throughout the study most males displayed large scrotal testes. Thirty-three males were randomly selected for histological examination at various times throughout the year and were found to have spermatogenic testes. The reproductive characteristics of the females indicated that they were reproductively active mainly during the wet season. Pregnancy occurs at the end of the dry season and parturition in the wet season. Most individuals captured after this season, mainly the females, were sexually immature. Our results suggest a seasonal monoestrous reproductive pattern for the species; however, adult males being fertile throughout the year could suggest polyoestry. Seasonal polyoestry is a possibility. There was, however, no evidence that females had more than one pregnancy per year.  相似文献

Five groups ofCallithrix jacchus jacchus were studied in the field in north east Brazil. Group size and composition were similar to that described for other callitrichids, but changes in group membership occurred much more frequently than previously reported. There was a 50% turnover in group membership in a six month period, and adult males changed groups particularly often. Most groups contained only one reproductively active female, but there was evidence that one group contained two females that were reproductively active simultaneously. Some groups had several adult females, and the role of reproductive female switched from one individual to another with time. Individual marmosets are faced with an unusually wide range of alternative life history strategies involving different combinations of location and reproductive condition. We argue that marmoset social organization is best studied at the level of the whole population within an area, rather than at the level of the individual group.  相似文献

Synopsis There are four members involved in the breeding complexes of poeciliid fishes found in the freshwaters of northeastern Mexico: males and females of a bisexual species, and diploid and triploid unisexuals. Both unisexuals reproduce by gynogenesis, i.e., an asexual type of reproduction where the sperm triggers egg development but the male genome is excluded to produce clonal offspring. The three types of females are closely related, which suggests that they are potential competitors since all three require the service of the same males. The potential for competition is compounded by a highly skewed sex ratio in favor of females. On the average the unisexuals comprise about 30% of the Poecilia females. This high frequency coupled with a close genetic relatedness to their bisexual hosts, raises the question of how the unisexuals are maintained in nature.Other investigators who work with bisexual/unisexual complexes in the related genus, Poeciliopsis, have postulated that male dominance hierarchies are responsible for restricting the access of subordinate males to their conspecific females. Consequently, these subordinate males mate with unisexual females. The current report tests whether or not this hypothesis applies to bisexual/unisexual complexes of Poecilia. We have found that linear dominance hierarchies appear to function in the defense of home ranges and do not restrict access of males to females. Dominant males exhibit less mating activity than subordinate males towards females. Previous reports showed that males are reproductively competent throughout the year, whereas females show striking asynchrony in their reproductive readiness. Such asynchrony limits the proportion of receptive females at any one time. Consequently, there are more males ready to mate than there are females receptive to their mating attempts. This may lead to mating frenzies. We postulate that these indiscriminate matings maintain the fertility of both unisexuals. When the relative reproductive outputs of adult females are compared, both unisexuals appear as fit as their bisexual congeners.  相似文献

Successful recruitment of endangered pallid sturgeon has not been documented in the upper Missouri River basin for decades, and research on the reproductive ecology of pallid sturgeon has been hindered by low sample size. A conservation propagation program was initiated in the 1990s, and the oldest age class of hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon are becoming sexually mature increasing the number of reproductively‐active fish in the system. However, it is currently unknown how the reproductive ecology of hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon relates to the few remaining wild fish. Following spring reproductive assessments, weekly relocations were recorded for each individual from late‐May to mid‐July to facilitate comparisons of spawning season movements among reproductive classifications and between spring hydrographs (2015 and 2016) for male pallid sturgeon. Mean total movement distances (±SE) were 104.5 km (18.9) for reproductively‐active wild males, 116.0 km (18.1) for reproductively‐active 1997‐year class males, and 20.6 km (3.0) for non‐reproductively‐active fish of unconfirmed sex. Movement characteristics of reproductively‐active males did not differ between 2015 and 2016 despite a difference of eight days in the timing of peak discharge and a difference of 79 m3/s (16.7%) in magnitude. Male aggregations were observed on the descending limb of the hydrograph in 2016 during temperatures suitable for spawning, but female pallid sturgeon underwent follicular atresia, similar to the other years of the study. Hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon from the conservation propagation program appear to have retained reproductive characteristics from the wild broodstock, a key finding for a population where local extirpation of the wild stock is imminent.  相似文献

Studies on the reproductive biology and age of amphibians provide primary information about the life history and population demographic parameters of species. Here, we describe the reproductive cycle, size–fecundity relationships, reproductive effort, sexual dimorphism and sexual maturity of Odontophrynus americanus, the flood frog, from South Brazil. A total of 96 individuals were analysed. The reproductive cycles of males and females were described through morphoanatomical analysis of testis and ovary. Age at onset of sexual maturity and estimated longevity were determined by skeletochronology. Individuals of O. americanus presented a potentially continuous reproductive cycle with a peak of reproductive activity in the warmer months. Females presented a higher reproductive investment than males. Sexual maturity was reached at around one year of age for both sexes while longevity differed between the sexes, with females living up to six years and males up to ten years. No evidence of sexual size dimorphism was found. This study is among the few that have assessed age at sexual maturity and longevity in a Neotropical anuran. Basic aspects of life history are of paramount importance because they allow comparisons and test of hypotheses to be made, which can help to build generalizations about the evolutionary meaning of ecological strategies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.
  • 1 The occurrence of pseudogamous triploid females in populations of the diploid species Ribautodelphax pungens (Ribaut) was studied throughout Europe.
  • 2 Considerable differences in triploid frequencies were found between populations but no regular geographic pattern was discerned.
  • 3 Within populations triploid frequencies proved to be stable from generation to generation.
  • 4 The twofold reproductive advantage of the pseudogamous triploid females is counterbalanced by active mate discrimination by diploid males against the pseudogamous triploid females in populations with high triploid frequencies.
  • 5 Sexual diploid and pseudogamous triploid females showed no differences in phenology.
  • 6 Differential winter mortality was found between diploid and triploid larvae.

Patterns of laboratory-determined aggressive behaviour and exploratory activity were examined in wild-caught male beach voles (Microtus breweri), an island-endemic species. This species is ecologically interesting because it has been found not to exhibit the super-annual population cycles typical of other rodents in the subfamily Microtinae. We found that body weight and reproductive condition were good predictors of aggressive behaviour, with heavier and reproductively active voles showing higher incidences of several stereotyped aggressive acts. Aggression also increased as the percentage of males and females who were reproductively active in the control population increased. Aggression was negatively correlated with population density, and more or less independent of dispersal rate. Dispersers and residents exhibited similar aggressive behaviour patterns. These observations are consistent with models which have proposed that population cycles in other vole species are controlled through the social interactions of individuals.  相似文献

The present work provides a detailed analysis of the reproductive strategy of the undulate ray Raja undulata in Portuguese mainland waters. The species was found mostly between 30 and 40 m deep on sandy bottoms. Egg‐laying sites were observed in the north, centre and south‐west regions, mainly at depths below 30 m. The peak of the reproductive season occurred from December to May. Asynchrony between reproductively active females and males appeared to occur, although most adult males were capable of reproducing throughout the year. The estimated length at 50% maturity was 86·2 cm (8·7 years) and 76·8 cm (7·6 years) total length for females and males, respectively. The maximum potential fecundity was estimated to be 69·8 follicles per female per reproductive season, which are released in 4·7 batches of 15 follicles. The life‐history and demographic parameters of R. undulata are similar to those of other skate species, while the potential rate of population increase (0·49) is above the published values for other elasmobranch species. With these new findings, this study makes an important contribution to the understanding of the life history of R. undulata, and provides a first evaluation of the productivity and susceptibility of the species to exploitation.  相似文献

Understanding the mating system and reproductive success of a species provides evidence for sexual selection. We examined the mating system and the reproductive success of captive adult black sea bream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii), using parentage assignment based on two microsatellites multiplex PCR systems, with 91.5% accuracy in a mixed family (29 sires, 25 dams, and 200 offspring). Based on the parentage result, we found that 93.1% of males and 100% of females participated in reproduction. A total of 79% of males and 92% of females mated with multiple partners (only 1 sire and 1 dam were monogamous), indicating that polygynandry best described the genetic mating system of black sea bream. For males, maximizing the reproductive success by multiple mating was accorded with the sexual selection theory while the material benefits hypothesis may contribute to explain the multiple mating for females. For both sexes, there was a significant correlation between mating success and reproductive success and the variance in reproductive success of males was higher than females. Variation in mating success is the greatest determinant to variation in reproductive success when the relationship is strongly positive. The opportunity for sexual selection of males was twice that of females, as well as the higher slope of the Bateman curve in males suggested that the intensity of intrasexual selection of males was higher than females. Thus, male–male competition would lead to the greater variation of mating success for males, which caused greater variation in reproductive success in males. The effective population number of breeders (Nb) was 33, and the Nb/N ratio was 0.61, slightly higher than the general ratio in polygynandrous fish populations which possibly because most individuals mated and had offspring with a low variance. The relatively high Nb contributes to the maintenance of genetic diversity in farmed black sea bream populations.  相似文献

Reproductive diapause is a strategy employed by some insects to coordinate reproduction with the appropriate environmental conditions for mate location and offspring development. Male Caloptilia fraxinella Ely (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) eclose in July in reproductive diapause, and remain unmated until May of the next year, when they emerge from overwintering sites in a reproductively active state. The present study assesses characteristics of male sex accessory glands (SAG) throughout the adult life stage when males are reproductively active and in early and late reproductive diapause. Male SAG are longer and positively correlate with moth body size when males are reproductively active in the spring compared with males in reproductive diapause in the summer and autumn. Male SAG also contain significantly more protein during the period of reproductive activity than during reproductive diapause. Access to a carbohydrate nutrition source does not impact male SAG length or protein concentration when males are reproductively active in the spring. Treatment with a Juvenile Hormone analogue in the autumn, but not the summer, tends to increase the total protein concentration compared with that of untreated control moths.  相似文献

Information on reproductive biology of the European hare (Lepus europaeus) in different environmental and landscape conditions comprises part of fundamental knowledge regarding species’ adaptive responses as well as many aspects of its biology. Most of the studies conducted on European hare reproduction are confined to midlatitude and northern populations, whereas no data exist on the indigenous southern populations. Here, we present information on reproductive characteristics of European hares inhabiting Mediterranean ecosystems on the island of Crete, Greece for two successive hunting seasons. Although the annual reproductive cycle of the species is well known, with an autumn sexual inactivity, the duration of this period is subjected to fluctuations in different years and for different areas. According to our data, hare populations of Crete present an autumn–early winter reproductive activity with high proportions of pregnant females observed in all the months of the study. Furthermore, the estimated mean litter size (1.54 SE ± 0.07) while signed to the lowest values ever observed for European hares is similar to values obtained in continuous breeding species of the same genus, Lepus granatensis, Lepus corsicanus, Lepus (capensis) mediterraneus, and Lepus capensis also inhabiting warm climates. In conclusion, our results suggest that Cretan European hare populations exhibit a reproductively active period during autumn–early winter where proportions of pregnant females and litter size give a strong indication of a continuous reproduction throughout the year.  相似文献

Hairy-eared cerrado mouse Thalpomys lasiotis is an endemic species of the cerrado biome. It can be found in open habitats, but its distribution is patchy and population numbers are unknown. In this paper, we describe, for the first time, aspects related to the ecology and natural history of T. lasiotis, detailing demographic parameters such as population densities, reproduction, home range, and longevity of this endemic and rare species. We captured, marked, and recaptured 55 individuals of T. lasiotis in águas Emendadas Ecological Station, located in the northeast of the Federal District, Brazil. We found significant differences on population numbers and densities between the dry and wet seasons. Densities and population numbers apparently are affected by the seasonality of food resources. Moreover, the breeding season is seasonal, and both males and females were reproductively active during the wet season. T. lasiotis showed a permanence time ranging from 2–9 months, which means that individuals can survive for at least 9 months in natural habitats. The home ranges of males and females of T. lasiotis were not significantly different. However, males have larger home ranges than females and the mean distance moved by males was higher than the distance moved by females, which is consistent with the hypothesis that males belonging to polygynous species tend to move greater distances to avoid agonistic encounters and to search sexual partners.  相似文献
