The inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism (IRAP) was used to confirm the genetic variation among 22 strains of Pyrenophora graminea differing in their xylanase production. A total of 162 bands were scored of which 151 (93.21%) were polymorphic. The molecular parameter used showed that P. graminea strains reside in four phylogenetic groups. There was observed the resolution between clustering strains and their xylanase production. Hence, the described approach presented here constitutes no prior assumption about the characterization of P. graminea strains differing in xylanase production.  相似文献

Xylanase and amylase have gained increasing interest because of their various biotechnology applications. In this research, the restriction of PCR-amplified internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) was used to confirm the genetic variation among 22 isolates of Pyrenophora graminea differing in their xylanase and amylase production. The fingerprints generated from the six restriction digestions of the rDNA ITS region showed high levels of intraspecific variation within the P. graminea population. Neighbour-Joining diagram, based on Nei’s genetic distances, showed that isolates formed two phylogenetic groups. No apparent association could be observed between xylanase and amylase production and genetic diversity among the twenty-two isolates.  相似文献

Morphological characteristics, as well as ultrastructure of pollen grains, chromosome numbers and karyotype analysis have been used to establish a new species of Saussurea from the Qinghai–Tibetan plateau. The new species, Saussurea pseudograminea Y. F. Wang, G. Z. Du et Y. S. Lian is easily distinguished from the similar S. graminea Dunn by having 2–3 capitula, involucre 0.7–1.2 cm in diameter, smaller pollen grains, pollen surface with larger and denser spines, achenes 4.0–5.5 mm long, 32 chromosomes, and a karyotype formula 2n = 2x = 32 = 18m + 10sm + 4st, whereas S. graminea has solitary capitula, involucre 1.2–2.0 cm in diameter, larger pollen grains, pollen surface with smaller and sparser spines, achenes 3–4 mm long, 28 chromosomes and a karyotype formula 2n = 2x = 28 = 6m + 20sm + 2st. The new species is distributed in Dianzhangou, Awanchang, and Gamaliang mountain regions of Maqu county in Gansu province.  相似文献

There have been several reports that individuals with Fragile X syndrome (FXS) and animal models of FXS have communication deficits. The present study utilized two different call classification taxonomies to examine the sex‐specificity of ultrasonic vocalization (USV) production on postnatal day (PD8) in the FVB strain of Fmr1 knockout (KO) mice. One classification protocol requires the investigator to score each call by hand, while the other protocol uses an automated algorithm. Results using the hand‐scoring protocol indicated that male Fmr1 KO mice exhibited longer calls (P = .03) than wild types on PD8. Male KOs also produced fewer complex, composite, downward, short and two‐syllable call‐types, as well as more frequency steps and chevron call‐types. Female heterozygotes exhibited no significant changes in acoustic or temporal aspects of calls, yet showed significant changes in call‐type production proportions across two different classification taxonomies (P < .001). They exhibited increased production of harmonic and frequency steps calls, as well as fewer chevron, downward and short calls. According to the second high‐throughput analysis, female heterozygotes produced significantly fewer single‐type and more multiple‐type syllables, unlike male KOs that showed no changes in these aspects of syllable production. Finally, we correlated both scoring methods and found a high level of correlation between the two methods. These results contribute further knowledge of sex differences in USV calling behavior for Fmr1 heterozygote and KO mice and provide a foundation for the use of high‐throughput analysis of neonatal USVs.  相似文献

Different mechanisms have been proposed for encoding information into vocalizations: variation of frequency or temporal characteristics, variation in the rate of vocalization production, and use of different vocalization types. We analyze the effect of rate variation on the dual function of chip calls (contact and alarm) produced by White‐eared Ground‐sparrows (Melozone leucotis). We conducted an acoustic playback experiment where we played back 1 min of four chip call rates (12, 36, 60, 84 calls/min). We measured the response of territorial pairs using behavioral responses, and fine structural features of calls produced in response to those playbacks. White‐eared Ground‐sparrows showed more intense behavioral responses to higher than lower call rate playbacks. Both individuals of the pair approached the source of the playback stimulus faster, produced the first vocalization faster, produced more vocalizations, and spent more time close to the stimulus in higher call rate than in lower call rate playbacks. Frequency and duration characteristics of calls (chip and tseet) were similar in response to all call rate playbacks. Our playback experiment elicited different intensity of behavioral responses, suggesting that risk‐based information is encoded in call rate. Our results suggest that variation in the rate of chip call production serves a dual function in this species; calls are used at lower rates for pair contact and at higher rates for alarm/mobbing signals.  相似文献

The perception of prosodic cues in human speech may be rooted in mechanisms common to mammals. The present study explores to what extent bats use rhythm and frequency, typically carrying prosodic information in human speech, for the classification of communication call series. Using a two-alternative, forced choice procedure, we trained Megaderma lyra to discriminate between synthetic contact call series differing in frequency, rhythm on level of calls and rhythm on level of call series, and measured the classification performance for stimuli differing in only one, or two, of the above parameters. A comparison with predictions from models based on one, combinations of two, or all, parameters revealed that the bats based their decision predominantly on frequency and in addition on rhythm on the level of call series, whereas rhythm on level of calls was not taken into account in this paradigm. Moreover, frequency and rhythm on the level of call series were evaluated independently. Our results show that parameters corresponding to prosodic cues in human languages are perceived and evaluated by bats. Thus, these necessary prerequisites for a communication via prosodic structures in mammals have evolved far before human speech.  相似文献

Bats modify the structure and emission pattern of their calls to cope with the functional constraints of a given echolocation situation. As a consequence, the flexibility in sonar call use affects the potential niche use of a species. The present paper addresses call use in Megaderma lyra, a species with a short, broadband multiharmonic basic call, in typical orientation situations, when emerging from and re-entering a day roost, in cruising flight and when passing through vegetation, and during the pursuit of tethered, flying insects. While call duration and emission rate were adapted to the four orientation situations, call spectral composition was similar in these situations, except that bats emitted calls containing more harmonics when re-entering the roost. These moderate call modifications may be accounted for by the observation that M. lyra stayed close to landscape elements even in open habitats. Although M. lyra is a typical gleaner, all tested bats approached flying insects, guided by sonar calls of significantly decreasing duration and pulse interval, and of increasing sweep rate. Before capture, peak frequency was lowered from call to call. The spontaneous approaches towards flying insects with systematic changes in call pattern suggest regular aerial hunting in this species.  相似文献

While searching for prey, Molossus molossus broadcasts narrow-band calls of 11.42 ms organized in pairs of pulses that alternate in frequency. The first signal of the pair is at 34.5 kHz, the second at 39.6 kHz. Pairs of calls with changing frequencies were only emitted when the interpulse intervals were below 200 ms. Maximum duty cycles during search phase are close to 20%. Frequency alternation of search calls is interpreted as a mechanism for increasing duty cycle and thus the temporal continuity of scanning, as well as increasing the detection range. A neurophysiological correlate for the processing of search calls was found in the inferior colliculus. 64% of neurons respond to frequencies in the 30- to 40-kHz range and only in this frequency range were closed tuning curves found for levels below 40 dB SPL. In addition, 15% of the neurons have double-tuned frequency-threshold curves with best thresholds at 34 and 39 kHz. Differing from observations in other bats, approach calls of M. molossus are longer and of higher frequencies than search calls. Close to the roost, the call frequency is increased to 45.0–49.8 kHz and, in addition, extremely broadband signals are emitted. This demonstrates high plasticity of call design.Abbreviations BF best frequency - CF constant frequency - IC inferior colliculus - Fmax maximal frequency - Fmin minimal frequency - PF peak frequency - PSTH post-stimulus time histogram - QCF quasi-constant frequency - SPL sound pressure level  相似文献

In natural advertisement calls of the barking treefrog, Hyla gratiosa, a small amount of incoherent frequency modulation (FM) is present. Incoherency in the FM of a call creates inharmonicity and phase changes between its frequency components. In this study, the combined and separate effects of the harmonic structure, phase spectrum, and FM of an advertisement call on female choice were tested. The harmonic structure of a call can have a direct effect on female preference; females showed a significant preference for static-inharmonic calls over static-harmonic calls. Neither differences in phase or FM alone conferred a preference in two choice tests. However, when FM is present in both calls it does influence female preference for harmonic structure -namely harmonic calls become preferable to inharmonic calls. This reversal of female preference for inharmonicity in a call by the presence of FM suggests that call parameters may interact, and thereby effect mate choice.Abbreviations AP amphibian papilla - BP basilar papilla - FM frequency modulation - PM phase modulation - HS harmonic structure - GB Gaussian Band  相似文献

The binding of five radiolabelled lectins (Vicia graminea, peanut,Phaseolus vulgaris isolectins E-PHA and L-PHA,Evonymus europaeus) to untreated and desialylated K562 cells and human erythrocytes was compared. The number of glycophorin A receptors recognized on the K562 cells by anti-blood group NV. graminea lectin was comparable to that found on the MN or NN erythrocyte surface. However, K562 cells had a severalfold higher number of oligosaccharide chains (presumablyO-glycosidic) which after desialylation became high-affinity receptors for peanut agglutinin, and of complex typeN-glycosidic chains available for the reaction with E-PHA and also with L-PHA (the latter lectin was not bound to erythrocytes). Moreover, K562 cells not treated with neuraminidase had a significant amount of extremely low affinity receptors for peanut agglutinin, whereas binding of this lectin to untreated erythrocytes was undetectable. On the other hand, the untreated K562 cells did not bind anti-blood group B and HE. europaeus lectin, but a small amount of binding by the desialylated cells was observed. Some other differences observed in the mode of lectin binding to K562 cells and erythrocytes are discussed.  相似文献

Along to alarm calls, Eurasian ground squirrels of the genus Spermophilus also produce other call types toward potential predators and rival conspecifics. Individually identified 50 speckled (Spermophilus suslicus), 18 European (S. citellus) and 59 yellow (S. fulvus) ground squirrels were examined for interspecies differences in their vocal repertoires. A separate sample of 116 (90 adult and 26 juvenile) S. suslicus was examined for presence of ultrasound in their alarm calls. In addition, all tonal calls in all the three species were checked for presence of nonlinear phenomena. Calls were elicited by approaching animals in live-traps or near burrows; some types of vocalizations were also recorded during handling. Eight call types, three tonal and five wideband ones, were described. Vocal repertoires were remarkably similar between species, excluding the alarm calls, which were species-specific. Alarm calls with ultrasonic components were found in two individuals of S. suslicus. Concerning nonlinear phenomena, biphonation in alarm calls of S. suslicus, frequency jumps and sidebands in screams of S. citellus, frequency jumps and subharmonics in screams of S. fulvus were found. Results are discussed with literature evidence on audible and ultrasonic vocalizations in ground squirrels.  相似文献

This paper presents the karyotype, DNA content and meiotic behaviourof five species ofViciafrom Argentina (V. macrogramineaBurk.,V.gramineaSM.,V. epetiolarisBurk.,V. pampicolaBurk. andV. nanaVog.).All the species have the same chromosome number and karyotypeformula (2n=14; 6m+4st+4t). Each species, however, displaysa characteristic number and position of the nucleolar organizerregion (NOR) and different sizes of the respective satellites, confirmed by Ag-NOR banding. Moreover, significant differenceswere found in the total chromosome volume (TCV) and DNA contentof the species. Positive correlations between DNA content andTCV, and between DNA content and type of life cycle were alsofound. TCV and DNA content are lower inV. nana(annual) and higherinV. macrograminea(biennial–perennial). The material displayedmarked karyotypic orthoselection, with similar karyotypes inall studied species, even when the overall chromosome size varied.Evolutionary changes in DNA amount are proportional to the relativelength of each chromosome arm, maintaining karyotypic uniformity.Significant differences were found between the meiotic behaviourofV. gramineaand that of the other species.V. gramineahas alower frequency of ring bivalents and chiasmata per cell, andalso has a lower interstitial chiasma frequency. In general, the results are congruent with the morphological data reportedfor these species.Copyright 1998 Annals of Botany Company. The study reported here primarily focuses on whether fruit extracts of Azadirachta indica Juss. (Neem) can induce systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in Hordeum vulgare against Drechslera graminea. A single leaf from each of the 1-month-old seedlings grown in 50 pots was treated with neem extract. Seven samples were collected at 12-h intervals for estimation of salicylic acid (SA) content and activities of phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and peroxidase (PO). Disease incidence was recorded on uninoculated leaves after 2 weeks and on newly emerged leaves after 3 weeks of inoculation of spores of the pathogen. Treatment of single leaf of barley seedlings with aqueous fruit extract of neem could protect the untreated and later emerging leaves of these seedlings from infection by leaf stripe pathogen. The concentration of SA and activities of PAL and PO were significantly higher in untreated leaves of seedlings given a single leaf treatment with neem fruit extract. The results show that neem fruit extract induced SAR in barley seedlings against D. graminea. The results of the study are significant for developing an environment-friendly biocide, which could induce SAR in crop plants leading to efficient management of pathogens  相似文献

The greater sac-winged bat, Saccopteryx bilineata (Emballonuridae), uses two distinct echolocation call sequences: a ‘monotonous’ sequence, where bats emit ~48 kHz calls at a relatively stable rate, and a frequency-alternating sequence, where bats emit calls at ~45 kHz (low-note call) and ~48 kHz (high-note call). The frequencies of these low–high-note pairs remain stable within sequences. In Panama, we recorded echolocation calls from S. bilineata with a multi-microphone array at two sites: one a known roosting site, the other a known foraging site. Our results indicate that this species (1) only produces monotonous sequences in non-foraging contexts and, at times, directly after emitting a feeding buzz and (2) produces frequency-alternating sequences when actively foraging. These latter sequences are also characterized by an unusual, offbeat emission rhythm. We found significant positive relationships between (1) call intensity and call duration and (2) call intensity and distance from clutter. However, these relationships were weaker than those reported for bats from other families. We speculate on how call frequency alternation and an offbeat emission rhythm might reflect a novel strategy for prey detection at the edge of complex habitat in this ancient family of bats.  相似文献

The male drumming signal of Capnopsis schilleri is studied for the first time. It is a monophasic call composed of 4–8 beats with a decreasing frequency. In the present paper, the drumming signals of some Protonemura species are also recorded and described for the first time both in males (Protonemura alcazaba, Protonemura meyeri and Protonemura navacerrada) and females (P. meyeri, P. navacerrada and Protonemura pyrenaica). The male call is very homogeneous in all the studied species and they consist of a repetition of 2–11 sequences of 6–31 beats, with an inter‐beat interval ranging from 0.034 to 0.088 s. The females have monophasic long signals consisting of a repetition of 5 to 109 beats with an inter‐beat interval of 0.061 to 0.159 s. It is extraordinary that females produced signals when males were absent, and so the female signal can be also considered as a call and not only an answer, as usually pointed out in stoneflies.  相似文献

Summary South American male toads Bufo chilensis emit a release call in contact with other individuals and a soft amplectic call, B. spinulosus males emit a release call while isolated in breeding areas, and B. arenarum produces a release call plus an intense mating call. Release calls of the 3 species measure 72–86 dB SPL RMS at 20 cm in front of the animal and the mating call of B. arenarum is 84–87 dB SPL at 4 m.Audiograms obtained with multiunit recordings in the torus semicircularis (TS) show a low frequency region (LFR), centered at 352, 356 and 491 Hz, and a high frequency region (HFR), centered at 1199, 1161 and 1423 Hz, in B. chilensis, B. spinulosus and B. arenarum, respectively. Center frequencies (CFs) in the HFR are in gross correspondence with average dominant frequencies (DFs) of the vocalizations of these species. Best thresholds (BTs) in the HFR are similar between B. chilensis and B. arenarum while in B. spinulosus average BTs are 10.8 and 13.5 dB higher, respectively. The similar auditory thresholds between B. chilensis and B. arenarum denote a conservative nature of auditory sensitivity among these anura.Abbreviations AP amphibian papilla - BP basilar papilla - BT best threshold - CF center frequency - DF dominant frequency - HFR high frequency region - LFR low frequency region - TS torus semi-circularis - SPL sound pressure level  相似文献

The swan obtained by hybridization between Cygnus cygnus and C.olor was delivered to the Moscow Zoo from the Leningrad Zoo in 1989. Between 2002 and 2004, it permanently remained with a female whooper swan in a large pond. The two swans behaved as a breeding pair, although the sex of the hybrid bird remained unknown. We observed no courtship displays addressed by the hybrid swan either to the female whooper swan or to other swans living in the pond. The hybrid swan was exteriorly closer to C. cygnus rather than to C. olor and showed increased aggressiveness. Its threatening behavior was intermediate between parental species in terms of threat displays and motor activity, although behavioral patterns characteristic of C.olor prevailed. The most frequent sounds in the vocal repertoire of the hybrid swan were close to the vibrant throbbing call of C.olor in terms of duration and frequency range. In contrast to these sounds, the call of the hybrid swan was noiselike, with distinct harmonic structure (as in the whooper swan except for extremely narrow interharmonic intervals). These vocal signals of the hybrid swan were shown to be intermediate between those of the parental species. In addition, the acoustic repertoire of the hybrid swan included rarely emitted sounds closely resembling elements of vocalizations of both C. cygnus and C. olor.  相似文献
