Synopsis The spawning periodicity and mating behavior of a northern population of the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia, was studied both in the field (Salem Harbor, Massachusetts) and in laboratory experiments. Spawning in the field coincided with new and full moons. Under conditions of unlimited food availability in artificial outdoor pools that received natural celestial illumination or in indoor aquaria receiving no evening illumination, spawning occurred every 1–3 days rather than fortnightly. These results suggest that tidal influences are a primary factor that synchronizes spawning in M. menidia. Published reports of diel time of spawning in both marine and freshwater species of Menidia indicate a generic tendency to spawn during mid-morning. This pattern coupled with high tides that cover suitable spawning substrates during mid-morning only at fortnightly intervals could account for the semilunar spawning cycle in marine populations of Menidia. Although general characteristics of the reproductive ecology of M. menidia in Massachusetts were similar to a thoroughly studied population in South Carolina, several differences were evident. The breeding season was shorter in Massachusetts (late; April–June), and occurred over a much lower range of temperatures (9–21°C). Intensity and frequency of spawning was correlated with the height of high tide. Eggs were deposited only on mats of intertidal, filamentous algae rather than on roots or stems of Spartina alterniflora or other intertidal vegetation. Promiscuous spawning occurred in small, highly male-dominated groups of fish, primarily after the tide had begun to recede, and often at the water's edge. No predation on spawning adults was observed but the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, fed daily on developing embryos during high tide. The Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia (Pisces: Atherinidae), exhibits an exceptionally high level of clinal variation in sex determination across its geographic range. Previous work suggested linear changes in the level of temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD) with increasing latitude. Based on comparisons at 31 sites encompassing the entire species’ range, we find that the change in level of TSD with latitude is instead highly nonlinear. The level of TSD is uniformly high in the south (Florida to New Jersey), then declines rapidly into the northern Gulf of Maine where genotypic sex determination (GSD) predominates and then rebounds to moderate levels of TSD in the northern‐most populations of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Major latitudinal breakpoints occur in central New Jersey (40oN) and the northern Gulf of Maine (44oN). No populations display pure TSD or GSD. Length of the growing season is the likely agent of selection driving variation in TSD with a threshold at 210 days. Because gene flow among populations is high, such distinct patterns of geographic variation in TSD/GSD are likely maintained by contemporary selection thereby demonstrating the adaptive fine tuning of sex determining mechanisms.  相似文献

Flow cytometry of nuclear DNA fluorescence in erythrocytes, coupled with gene dosage assessments derived from electrophoresis of proteins, reaffirmed that the Menidia clarkhubbsi complex of unisexual atherinid fishes is diploid. Non-recombinant hybrids between M. beryllina and M. peninsulae represented 18% (108 specimens) of the Menidia collected from three pools in the Copano Bay area and 9-6% (42 specimens) of those from a pool on Galveston Island. Of those hybrids, 35 and 5%, respectively, were triploids. Zymograms indicated that the triploids either had two doses of genes from M. beryllina and one from M. peninsulas or they had one from the former species and two from the latter. The hybrids seem to be maintained primarily, if not entirely, by ongoing hybridization and back-crossing of F1 hybrids to the parental species. Triploids apparently result from the combination of unreduced, diploid gametes from F1 hybrids with haploid gametes from either M. beryllina or M. peninsulae.  相似文献

Eggs were stripped from gravid Atlantic silversides collected on two occasions, once during the early part and once during the late part of the natural spawning season. Unfertilized egg diameter was not correlated with length of the female, nor was it significantly larger during the early part of the season. Eggs were fertilized and incubated in the laboratory. Larval length at hatch was measured every 24 h during the hatching period after embryos were incubated at 18 or 25° C. Lower incubation temperature caused a significantly greater length at hatch for the offspring of each of the 20 females studies. In most cases (17 out of 20 at 25° C, 10 out of 20 at 18° C), there was a significant decrease in length at hatch during the hatching period for a given female's eggs incubated at a given temperature. In the natural environment, larvae hatched early in the season under cooler temperatures could average 12% longer than those hatched later under warmer temperatures, and therefore may have a greater chance of survival. The results help to explain the observation that field-caught M. menidia that hatched early in the season are larger at any given age than those that hatched late in the season.  相似文献

This study focuses on the seasonal accumulation and depletion of somatic energy in the Atlantic silverside (Menidia menidia), an annual estuarine fish. Previous research revealed that northern silversides are subject to strong size-dependent winter mortality, while southern fish suffer no appreciable winter mortality. To examine whether there was geographic differentiation in allocation strategies, we compared temporal patterns of energy storage and utilization among three populations along this gradient in seasonality. The comparative design used monthly or biweekly samples of fish collected in the wild, as well as samples of fish from each population reared in a common environment, where genetic differences can be clarified. Somatic energy stores were quantified via gravimetric analysis of neutral storage lipids and lean tissue. Analysis revealed that small individuals maintained relatively low levels of lipid reserves, which may account for their lower survival in winter. Wild fish in the north rapidly accumulated large somatic reserves, which were depleted over the winter and then increased again during the subsequent spring breeding season. In wild southern fish, relatively small reserves accumulated slowly until breeding commenced in the spring. The common-environment comparison of somatic storage patterns revealed a genetic basis for among-population differences in reserve accumulation rates, but no differences in the amount of reserves stored. We conclude that the overwinter depletion of somatic reserves has a significant selective impact on energy accumulation and allocation strategies in seasonal environments. Saddle-shaped skin lesions commonly occurring in both wild and captive Bermudan reef silversides yielded a mixed infection of motile and non-motile Gram-negative cells of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Pseudomonas sp., Vibrio parahaemolyticus and a myxobacterial-like strain. Bacteria occurred as almost pure microcolonies and mixed clumps on proximal scale and fin ray surfaces, in intercellular epidermal spaces, on perimysium of fin erector muscle myomeres and on eroded dorsal fin rays and their intact membranes, but neither on healthy areas of the skin nor within muscle cells. Effects were epithelial destruction and liquefactive necrosis of myomeres, and raising and sloughing of Malpighian cells, scales and dermis. Host response was minimal, consisting of infiltration of a few lymphocytes and macrophages. The fish pathogenic dinoflagellate Amyloodinium ocellatum was seen in one fish with a saddle lesion and caused muscle cell lysis, as evidenced by cloudy cell swelling. Antibiotic sensitivity tests showed increased drug resistance with mixed bacterial types compared to that of single pure isolates. This suggests that alternatives to chemotherapy for control of bacterial fish diseases is appropriate, because most are probably caused by mixed infections.  相似文献

The inland silverside, Menidia beryllina (Cope), is an annual zooplanktivore that occurs in estuarine and freshwater habitats along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts and drainages of the United States. Experiments were conducted at 25 ± 1°C to quantify the relationship between mean dry weight (WD) and rates of energy gain from food consumption (C), and energy losses as a result of respiration (R) and ammonia excretion (E) during routine activity and feeding by groups of fish. The absorption efficiency of ingested food energy (A) was also quantified. Rates of C, E, and R increased with WD by factors (b in the equation y = aWDb) equal to 0.462, 0.667, and 0.784, respectively. Mean (±SE) rates of energy loss during feeding were 1.6 ± 0.1 (R) and 3.4 ± 0.6 (E) times greater than those for unfed fish. Absorption efficiency was independent of WD and estimated to be 89% of C. From these measurements, the surplus energy available for growth and activity (G) and growth efficiency (K1) were estimated. Over the range in sizes of juveniles and adults (5–500 mg WD), predicted G and K1 values decreased from 7.42 to 0.20 J mg fish?1 day?1 and 63 to 21%, respectively. Measured and predicted bioenergetic parameters are discussed within an ecological context for a northern population of this species.  相似文献

Synopsis Large male tessellated darters, Etheostoma olmstedi, defend flat-bottomed rocks, the undersides of which serve as spawning substrates. Because females attach eggs directly onto bare stone, a spawning bout necessarily decreases the surface area available for further breeding at a nest. In apparent response to the female preference of ovipositing on rocks with the most bare surface, fathers abandon nests with their attached offspring to search for rocks with more uncovered surface. Egg abandonment also results after roving fathers intercept and spawn with ripe females and remain at a different rock to care for a new clutch. In essence, large males appear to maximize the number of eggs they fertilize by sequentially monopolizing breeding patches that are temporarily most desirable to females. The costs to a father of abandoning his eggs appear to be low for two reasons: (1) non-territorial males, created by a scarcity of suitable rocks, readily occupy vacant nests, and clean and aerate the abandoned eggs; and (2) after water hardening, eggs are less vulnerable to cannibalism. The maintenance of eggs by nonparental males may be both incidental to scrubbing the ceiling for their own breeding and adaptive in that viable eggs stimulate females to spawn; neither would appear to involve parental investment costs. Thus, allopaternal care in the tessellated darter may have evolved because it is performed in the selfish pursuit of spawning opportunities while entailing little, if any, of the costs normally subsumed within parental investment.  相似文献

The abundance, the seasonal variation and the life history of the silverside, Atherinomorus lacunosus , are studied from fish caught in the lagoons around New Caledonia. About 270 nights of fishing were carried out between 1980 and 1983. The silverside is present in most of the fishing hauls but seldom in large quantities. Fish reproduce from September to December at 1 year of age. At this time their size is about 10 cm. Mortality is high and a few individuals can survive a second year and reach 13 cm. Results from other studies indicate that in a less seasonally contrasted environment than the lagoons of New Caledonia, A. lacunosus has several spawning periods during the year. This species is thus able to adjust its phenology to the environmental conditions.  相似文献

Synopsis Reproduction and parental care in the cockscomb prickleback, a Pacific coast intertidal fish, were examined using a combination of field and laboratory observations. The sexes were dimorphic, particularly during the breeding season, and males competed with other males for access to females. Males performed lateral and spasm displays. In the wild, the breeding season extended from January to March on cobblestone beaches. Assortative mating was positive with respect to body size. Females exhibited solitary parental care of the eggs. Each female coiled around, guarded and fanned a single egg mass that likely represented her total reproductive effort for the year. The number of eggs in the mass increased linearly with female size (weight or length). Males did not remain after spawning. Aquarium observations revealed that males spawn with more than one female given the opportunity. It is not known whether this occurs in the wild. Incubation to hatching took 29 days. Upon hatching, the young swam towards the surface. Parental care did not extend beyond hatching.  相似文献

Synopsis Spawning patterns of inland silversides, Menidia beryllina, and tidewater silversides, Menidia peninsulae, were examined in the laboratory under several combinations of ‘tidal’ and diel light cycle cues. M. beryllina showed a high frequency of spawning throughout the day when held under constant conditions (24L: OD, current velocity 8 cm sec−1) and when ‘tidal’ and diel light cycles were presented singly or in combination. In contrast, M. peninsulae demonstrated a high frequency of spawning only when presented a combination of ‘tidal’ and diel light cycle cues and spawned predominantly at night. Menidia beryllina embryos were euryhaline. Hatching ranged from 73 to 78% at salinities of 5,15 and 30‰ M. peninsulae embryos showed an inverse relationship between the percentage hatch and the incubation salinity, 90% at 5‰ and only 65% at 30‰ Survival and growth of larval M. beryllina from the day of hatching through 16 days old was optimal at 15‰ Although survival of M. peninsulae larvae was optimal at 30%, no trend was apparent in growth of larvae held for 16 days at 5, 15 or 30‰ salinity. Reproductive behaviors of the largemouth triplefin Ucla xenogrammus were observed on reefs of Kuchierabu-jima Island, southern Japan. Males exclusively maintained home ranges including spawning sites on vertical walls of overhanging reefs where filamentous algae were densely distributed. Females visited a male's home range to release adhesive eggs into the dense algae. Males guarded multiple egg clutches, but rarely showed fanning behaviors or mouth cleaning to the eggs. Aquarium experiments showed that guarding males had no significant effect on egg development. Because of the favorable water exchange conditions around their spawning sites, male U. xenogrammus could avoid the energy costs for egg care.  相似文献

Sand-smelts are small fishes inhabiting inshore, brackish and freshwater environments and with a distribution in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea, extending south into the Indian Ocean. Here, we present a broad phylogenetic analysis of the genus Atherina using three mitochondrial (control region, 12S and 16S) and two nuclear markers (rhodopsin and 2nd intron of S7). Phylogenetic analyses fully support the monophyly of the genus. Two anti-tropical clades were identified, separating the South African Atherina breviceps from the north-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Atherina' species. In European waters, two groups were found. The first clade formed by a well supported species-pair: Atherina presbyter (eastern Atlantic) and Atherina hepsetus (Mediterranean), both living in marine waters; a second clade included Atherina boyeri (brackish and freshwater environments) and two independent lineages of marine punctated and non-punctated fishes, recently proposed as separate species. Sequence divergence values strongly suggest multiple species within the A. boyeri complex.  相似文献

Synopsis Seasonal and spatial aspects of spawning for three commercially important grouper species in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico are detailed. These species — all of which are protogynous hermaphrodites - spawn in deep water (> 25 m for red grouper,> 40 m for gag and scamp), making it difficult to observe spawning behaviors without ROV or submersible support. They respond to intense fishing pressure in ways that are directly related to their respective reproductive styles. Species that aggregate appear to be more susceptible to such pressures than those that do not, as evidenced by marked skewing of sex ratios in favor of females. Gag, Mycteroperca microlepis, have suffered a drop in the proportion of males from 17% to 1% in the last 20 years; scamp, Mycteroperca phenax, have dropped from 36% to 18%; and red grouper, Epinephelus morio, which do not aggregate, have shown little change in the sex ratio over the past 25–30 years.  相似文献

Synopsis The behaviour of free-living pairs ofAequidens vittatus was observed in Surinam, South America. An ethogram of breeding behaviour is presented, based on those observations and on aquarium-held fish. This is a biparental, substrate-guarding species that spawns on a movable platform. Sexual differentiation of parental roles was more pronounced when the young were in the embryonic interval than when they were mobile juveniles. Females spent more time near their brood, attacked juvenile conspecifics more often, and fanned and mouthed embryos more than males did. Males were more involved than females in territorial spacing of pairs. The movable spawning leaf provides support for eggs on detritus substrate and may also provide protection against predators and rapid water level changes.  相似文献

The high speciation rate of Chirostoma in Central Mexico has been associated with allopatric speciation events promoted by the emergence of vicariant barriers in freshwater habitats, as well as by sympatric ecological segregation, common in those species inhabiting lacustrine ecosystems. Through nuclear and mitochondrial markers, this study revealed a speciation process within Chirostoma attenuatum resulting in two evolutionary independent units that coincide with their morphological differentiation, indicating that Chirostoma attenuatum and Chirostoma zirahuen may be considered separate species. This process was the result of vicariance associated with geological dynamics of the region. Phylogeographic findings indicated two speciation stages: early allopatric isolation, during which the isolated populations accumulated unique adaptations, and secondary contact with low migration rate and the maintenance of the evolutionary trajectory. Historical demographic analysis indicated that the two well‐differentiated lineages underwent independent evolutionary histories in their respective lakes. Chirostoma zirahuen from Zirahuen and C. attenuatum from Patzcuaro represent unique and irreplaceable genetic diversity that must to be conserved.  相似文献
